Quinta do Lago celebrates 50 years of history Humble begginings The year was 1971 and André Jordan was in Portugal in search of a new project to invest in. As yet, he hadn’t seen anything promising, but with a viewing of a 300-year-old property near the Ludo nature trail, that was all about to change… After a bumpy drive along an unmarked dirt track, Jordan decided to get out to find the property on foot. He walked to the top of a hill – now the site of Casa Velha and Bovino Steakhouse – and looked out to the sight of pine trees, sloping grassy hills and meandering trails, leading down to the blue and green channels of the Ria Formosa, and looking over the dune into the wide ocean. In this moment, the original masterplan of Quinta do Lago was formed. By 1972, Jordan’s masterplan began to take shape as a golf course - now the North Course - with a private club, and restoration of the farmhouse that would become the treasured Casa Velha.

Palácio Estoril A hotel where history is made

From the beginning, the Palácio has hosted heads of state, emperors, kings and princes...

In the Palácio Estoril Hotel you travel back in time, but on a journey that also continues in the present and into the future. Built in 1930, today´s Palácio Hotel retains many of the characteristics of that period. The ambience of exclusiveness that pervades the Hotel makes an impression on everybody who enters it, from its imposing, entirely white facade and beautiful gardens to its elegant classic decor, which has been updated over the years but without losing its combination of timeless, luxury and sophistication. During the Second World War, due to Portugal’s neutrality several royal families went into exile in Estoril, which became known as the “Coast of Kings”. remains a favourite with their descendants. In February 2011, the Royal Gallery was created in their honour, where you can view photographs of the important members of European royalty who stayed at the Hotel. The Royal Gallery is now also one of Estoril’s tourist attractions. From the beginning, the Palácio has hosted heads of state, emperors, kings and princes, European nobility, the world’s great artists, writers, sports champions, filmmakers and actors and many politicians who have shaped the destiny of the West. Private or State visits, festivals and major summits bring to the Palácio a long list of distinguished guests who mingle in the public rooms and corridors with all the Hotel´s other patrons. Boavista Golf Celebrates its 20th Anniversary More than 20 years ago the Emerson group embarked on its first golf and leisure development in Portugal, and this year Boavista Golf celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

The outstanding golf course, its facilities, the clubhouse and staff have been the props with which the guests has flourished Boavista’s golf course opened as scheduled on January 1st 2002. The course had a very different appearance then, compared to what you see today. The course design itself has altered very little in the ensuing years, but the surroundings certainly have, even down to the construction of a new clubhouse. Home of several events and tournaments, Boavista has establish itself as a reference on the west side of the Algarve, making this region a true hidden golf gem. Herdade do Esporão

Herdade do Esporão is located 170km from Lisbon, integrated in Alentejo DOP in Reguengos de Monsaraz sub-region. Alentejo is characterised by hot and dry Summers, mild Springs and Autumns and undemanding winters. With a landscape dominated by vast plains and cork oak forests, it is the largest wine producing region in Portugal. A Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) region consisting of 8 sub-regions with a long tradition in wine production. This estate, measuring 1830 hectares and with geographical boundaries that have remained unchanged since 1267, offers unique agricultural conditions - great temperature variations, seven different types of soil and an extraordinary biodiversity that helps us produce in harmony with the environment. Boasting 533 hectares of vineyards, olive groves and other crops optimised by Organic Production Methods, our Estate is planted with approximately 40 grape varieties, 2 olive varieties, as well as orchards and vegetable gardens. In Herdade we can find the Ampelographic field: a living library where we grow 189 different grape varieties. Our goal is to study varieties’ production potential, which ones best adapt to climate change, as well a way to preserve unique varieties.

Esporão Reserva red 2019 and white 2020 We created Esporão Reserva in 1985 with the intention of producing the best wines in the Alentejo. It was the first wine produced by Esporão, so it has accompanied us throughout our history from the very beginning. Over the years it has led us to innovate, to grow and to see our origins in a different light – understanding and respecting them. It is the first vintage of this wine with organic certification, and therefore, reflects reflect our company journey. Along the years we have

adopted sustainable farming practices and converted all our vineyards to organic farming. We built new wineries and travelled to other markets, taking the Alentejo and Portugal to the world. Art accompanies Esporão Reserva from the very beginning. Every year we invite a new artist to illustrate our labels. Every piece of artwork has its own individual story to tell. Esporão Reserva red wine is produced only with hand-picked, organically grown grapes from our own plots. Each grape variety is vinified according to its ripening cycle and potential. At Adega dos Lagares, at Herdade do Esporão, each grape variety is vinified separately in concrete vats and small temperature-controlled marble wine-presses. It ages in American and French oak barrels for 12 months. Esporão Reserva White is vinified in stainless steel tanks and barrels. In the Herdade do Esporão white wine cellar, part of the blend ages in American and French oak barrels for six months The diversity of Herdade do Esporão, together with the different characteristics of the grape varieties, the soils, the maturity of the vines and the character of the people who have made this wine consistently over the years result in a rich, intense, but always harmonious wine.

Changes in elevation are integral to the design of this nine as a majority of the golf holes ascend hillsides or descend through intimate valleys. The parkland setting disappears briefly with a series of holes with more expansive views. A preview of the dunes and links holes to come is provided in the sixth and seventh holes. As the round concludes, the course again assumes the parkland character. The Lagos Course (Holes 10-18) The Lagos Course begins with the same parkland character. This course incorporates the only two lakes found on the entire site at the short par-3 third hole and the long par-4 sixth hole. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers into the expansive dune lands on the southwestern portion of the site. The round concludes with a climb to the clubhouse and back into a more parkland setting. The Praia Course (Holes 19-27) The third nine at Palmares presents the golf experience every great designer dreams of having the privilege to create: a seaside landscape with dunes exposed to the elements. The four seaside holes are between the beach and the railway line. The course opens by descending from a parkland setting. The second hole then whisks golfers into the true links part of the course. This dunes character is continued through the remainder of the Praia Golf Course with the closing hole, a strong uphill par-5, rising up out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.

Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did. The Course Today A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course. Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four of the

five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine - producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35. As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par. Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

At the first lights, turn right. The course is about 1 Km further on the left side. Salgados Golf course opened in September 1994 and is situated near the extensive Galé Beach between Pera and albufeira. The low lying wetlands of the landscape have been skilfully used in the layout wich incorporates 14 water hazards. To compensate for the dauting water hazards, Salgados has been designed to have only semi-rough for general play and the overall lenght has been restricted to 6140 metres from the championship tees. It is a conventional par 72 course wich four par 3 holes and four par 5 holes. The first nine are laid out in a roughly anti-clokwise loop starting and ending close to the clubhouse. One of the toughest holes is the 415 metre par 4 7th, which runs along the sea-side of the

course with a narrow Fairway between large dunes. Among the back nine, only yhe 180 metre par 3 17th is devoid of water hazards, but on five of the remaining holes players will be able to sacrífice distance for accuracy off the tee and still have opportunities to score pars. The exceptions are the 390 metre par 4 10th, and the unusual sequence of two links-type par 5s – the 14th which measures 490 metres and the 15th at 545 metres. These presente a tough testo f golfing ability before the relatively benign three hole home stretch. Traditional Bermuda Tifton 419 grass has been used for the fairways, Rye grass for the semirough, Pencross for the greens and Penneagle for the Tees.

Traversing undulating parkland, many fairways are lined by pine trees. However, perhaps an even more significant challenge is presented by the Umbrella and Atlantic pines which present themselves on fairways and at times on the approach into greens. Length has recently been added on a number of holes, which ensure the test originally envisioned by Pennink is maintained. At a substantial 6,353 metres from the white tee markers, and with a par of 72, Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course is

certainly no pushover, although golfers will be pleased to learn that the ponds and stream which come into play on five holes should not, for the most part, present a serious threat. One of the most remarked upon features of Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course, in Vilamoura, is the stunning panorama provided from the clubhouse, which extends over the excellent driving range and practice facilities and beyond. Completely renovated at the turn of the millennium, its veranda offers the perfect setting for post-round relaxation. Designed by true golfing legend, Arnold Palmer, there is absolutely no doubt that it has lived up to that lofty billing. This is one of the golf courses in Vilamoura considered to be one of the best and most challenging in Europe, and features an exceptional driving range and a putting green of some 2,500 m2. All of this has made it the obvious venue of choice for many of the top international tournaments to visit Portugal in recent times. Indeed, it has served as the host venue to the Portugal Masters on every occasion since 2007, while the World Cup Championship was staged there in 2005.

The Par-72 Championship layout, measuring 6.651 meters (7,273 yards) from the Palmer tees, incorporates and has ensured the preservation of natural wetlands on-site, as well as the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. A significant proportion of Dom Pedro Victoria’s acreage is occupied by lakes, forming hazards to be avoided but which also have a strategic purpose in providing reservoirs for irrigation. A number of teeing options on each hole (often as many as six are offered), accompanied by wide but undulating fairways, provide a fair test of golf, although water and cleverly-positioned bunkers pose a constant threat.

BENAMOR GOLF Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In this course you can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones in the elevated greens and tees, with many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, you will have to use all the clubs in the bag and play with strategy to make a good score. Some of the holes you won’t forget are: Hole 3, Par 4, it is one of the most famous holes of the Portuguese Golf, with view to the Atlantic Ocean, its picture was used for many years to promote “Golf in Portugal” abroad. Hole 4, Par 3, played over a natural ravine to a quite demanding Green. Hole 13, Par 3, you play over a big lake to an elevated green well protected with 4 bunkers.

VIDAGO PALACE The award-winning Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course was redesigned by the firm Cameron & Powell from an original by Mackenzie Ross built in 1936. The course has now been rebuilt from scratch to meet USGA specifications for greens and tees and has been transformed into a par 72 course.

Take the A3 highway towards Braga, A7 towards Guimarães, enter in the A24 highway toward Chaves. Distinctive features of this course include the support walls of all the tees, which are made of local stone, and the century-old trees, almost all of which have been preserved. The first four holes, played within the Centenary Park of the Vidago Palace Hotel, anticipate the next 11, newly built in the Oura valley. The last three are played in the upper part of the Centenary Park, and afford

magnificent views to the neighboring hills and villages.
