Quinta Da Marinha Completes Solar Panel Installation Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel has continued its push to achieve a more sustainable and eco-friendly operation with the installation of 553 photovoltaic solar panels, which will now power the hotel’s lighting via a renewable source. In partnership with Energias de Portugal, the €240,000 investment will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 94,188 tons per year, minimising the hotel’s reliance on external energy sources, and protecting them against price increases while making the resort more ecologically sound. Luís Tomé, maintenance director of the Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel, said: “The photovoltaic solar panels are currently producing 30% of our electricity which will be used all over the hotel and in particular with the lighting.” The project is part of a wider strategy that is aiming to make Quinta da Marinha an allencompassing eco-friendly resort, having already installed four electric vehicle chargers, replaced plastic with bamboo in the hygiene kits and eliminated paper-based reservation processes. The new check-in system aims to avoid the use of magnetic cards, instead offering guests the opportunity to enter the rooms via their mobile phones, both

streamlining the procedure and removing unnecessary waste products. Located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, the Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel allows guests to enjoy nature and tranquillity with rounds of golf on the 18-hole course, designed by Sir Robert Trent Jones as a par71 and located just a 30-minute drive from Lisbon. The hotel itself has also been through major additional work, with a remodelling that involved an estimated investment of five million euros and saw major renovations across the facilities at the five-star resort. Paulo Figueiredo, general operations manager for the Onyria group, said: “We have adopted a series of strategies and new procedures to become more efficient and reduce our impact on the environment, which across the group is a major focus of ours. We want to continue gradual, but consistent steps towards more sustainable tourism.” The Onyria Golf Resorts group is part of the natural evolution of a project that began around 25 years ago. The group was created to undertake the integrated management of resorts, villas, hotels, golf courses and restaurants. Onyria Golf Resorts is a family enterprise and began in 1985, with the

acquisition of a plot of land in the Quinta da Marinha, Cascais. Top 5 yoga poses for back pain relief Low back pain is the number one injury sustained by golfers. Yoga for golfers can help prevent or relieve lower back pain if it is practiced regularly. The key is constant stretching before and after golf can help you prevent injuries. However, if you already suffer from back pain, you have some yoga poses to try and get back pain relief. The following yoga poses help the affected area becomes stretched and strengthened. Yoga helps increase blood circulation in the affected area too. Child pose Child’s Pose is a beginner yoga pose that stretches the muscles of the low back, as well as the inner thighs. For those with tight back and hip muscles, this will, of course, feel like work. But get beyond the tension and Child’s Pose is deeply relaxing. Spinal twist Begin lying comfortably on the back. Bend your knees into your chest and extend

your arms out alongside the body in a “T” formation, with your palms facing up toward the ceiling. Inhale here, lengthening your tailbone down toward the ground. Cat & Cow It is an easy way to warm up the spine and loosen the muscles. Notice your lower back and how it feels. After a few repetitions take a pause and focus on breathing.

Changes in elevation are integral to the design of this nine as a majority of the golf holes ascend hillsides or descend through intimate valleys. The parkland setting disappears briefly with a series of holes with more expansive views. A preview of the dunes and links holes to come is provided in the sixth and seventh holes. As the round concludes, the course again assumes the parkland character. The Lagos Course (Holes 10-18) The Lagos Course begins with the same parkland character. This course incorporates the only two lakes found on the entire site at the short par-3 third hole and the long par-4 sixth hole. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers into the expansive dune lands on the southwestern portion of the site. The round concludes with a climb to the clubhouse and back into a more parkland setting. The Praia Course (Holes 19-27) The third nine at Palmares presents the golf experience every great designer dreams of having the privilege to create: a seaside landscape with dunes exposed to the elements. The four seaside holes are between the beach and the railway line. The course opens by descending from a parkland setting. The second hole then whisks golfers into the true links part of the course. This dunes character is continued through the remainder of the Praia Golf Course with the closing hole, a strong uphill par-5, rising up out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.

PENINA The first 18 hole course of its kind to be built in the Algarve, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course started a golfing movement that is, today, famous the world over. Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did. The Course Today A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course. Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four of the

five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine - producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35. As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par. Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

At the first lights, turn right. The course is about 1 Km further on the left side. Salgados Golf course opened in September 1994 and is situated near the extensive Galé Beach between Pera and albufeira. The low lying wetlands of the landscape have been skilfully used in the layout wich incorporates 14 water hazards. To compensate for the dauting water hazards, Salgados has been designed to have only semi-rough for general play and the overall lenght has been restricted to 6140 metres from the championship tees. It is a conventional par 72 course wich four par 3 holes and four par 5 holes. The first nine are laid out in a roughly anti-clokwise loop starting and ending close to the clubhouse. One of the toughest holes is the 415 metre par 4 7th, which runs along the sea-side of the

course with a narrow Fairway between large dunes. Among the back nine, only yhe 180 metre par 3 17th is devoid of water hazards, but on five of the remaining holes players will be able to sacrífice distance for accuracy off the tee and still have opportunities to score pars. The exceptions are the 390 metre par 4 10th, and the unusual sequence of two links-type par 5s – the 14th which measures 490 metres and the 15th at 545 metres. These presente a tough testo f golfing ability before the relatively benign three hole home stretch. Traditional Bermuda Tifton 419 grass has been used for the fairways, Rye grass for the semirough, Pencross for the greens and Penneagle for the Tees.

Traversing undulating parkland, many fairways are lined by pine trees. However, perhaps an even more significant challenge is presented by the Umbrella and Atlantic pines which present themselves on fairways and at times on the approach into greens. Length has recently been added on a number of holes, which ensure the test originally envisioned by Pennink is maintained. At a substantial 6,353 metres from the white tee markers, and with a par of 72, Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course is

certainly no pushover, although golfers will be pleased to learn that the ponds and stream which come into play on five holes should not, for the most part, present a serious threat. One of the most remarked upon features of Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course, in Vilamoura, is the stunning panorama provided from the clubhouse, which extends over the excellent driving range and practice facilities and beyond. Completely renovated at the turn of the millennium, its veranda offers the perfect setting for post-round relaxation. Designed by true golfing legend, Arnold Palmer, there is absolutely no doubt that it has lived up to that lofty billing. This is one of the golf courses in Vilamoura considered to be one of the best and most challenging in Europe, and features an exceptional driving range and a putting green of some 2,500 m2. All of this has made it the obvious venue of choice for many of the top international tournaments to visit Portugal in recent times. Indeed, it has served as the host venue to the Portugal Masters on every occasion since 2007, while the World Cup Championship was staged there in 2005.

The Par-72 Championship layout, measuring 6.651 meters (7,273 yards) from the Palmer tees, incorporates and has ensured the preservation of natural wetlands on-site, as well as the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. A significant proportion of Dom Pedro Victoria’s acreage is occupied by lakes, forming hazards to be avoided but which also have a strategic purpose in providing reservoirs for irrigation. A number of teeing options on each hole (often as many as six are offered), accompanied by wide but undulating fairways, provide a fair test of golf, although water and cleverly-positioned bunkers pose a constant threat.

BENAMOR GOLF Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. Designed by the well-known American Architect – Rocky Roquemore, Quinta de Cima was conceived as the championship course of the golf resort. In this course you can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones in the elevated greens and tees, with many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, you will have to use all the clubs in the bag and play with strategy to make a good score. Some of the holes you won’t forget are: Hole 3, Par 4, it is one of the most famous holes of the Portuguese Golf, with view to the Atlantic Ocean, its picture was used for many years to promote “Golf in Portugal” abroad. Hole 4, Par 3, played over a natural ravine to a quite demanding Green. Hole 13, Par 3, you play over a big lake to an elevated green well protected with 4 bunkers.

VIDAGO PALACE The award-winning Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course was redesigned by the firm Cameron & Powell from an original by Mackenzie Ross built in 1936. The course has now been rebuilt from scratch to meet USGA specifications for greens and tees and has been transformed into a par 72 course.

Take the A3 highway towards Braga, A7 towards Guimarães, enter in the A24 highway toward Chaves. The Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course is a course of striking contrasts, all with a particular respect for the natural surroundings. Distinctive features of this course include the support walls of all the tees, which are made of local stone, and the century-old trees, almost all of which have been preserved. The first four holes, played within the Centenary Park of the Vidago Palace Hotel, anticipate the next 11, newly built in the Oura valley. The last three are played in the upper part of the Centenary Park, and afford

magnificent views to the neighboring hills and villages. Every hole is a challenge and each of the last nine is completely different from the one before, giving golfers the opportunity to deploy their full range of shots.
