Newly refurbished Laguna Course reopens for play at Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection

A requalification of the course has helped to improve the overall playing experience by focusing on three key pillars: definition, contrast and uniformity

The Laguna Golf Course at Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection has officially reopened after undergoing an extensive requalification to improve the overall quality of the course as part of a new dimension to the resort’s wellrenowned golfing portfolio.

The requalification of the Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course was based on three key pillars; definition, contrast, and uniformity; designed to create a consistent look-andfeel throughout the layout and showcase increased playability for golfers of all abilities.

Upon re-opening, golfers can now clearly identify all areas of play, along with the contrast given by the different tones of grass and cutting heights. 100% Bermuda Grass has been installed across all the greens, fairways, and tee boxes; restoring them with improved aesthetics and increased water efficiency, to provide quality conditioning 365 days of the year.

In addition, the course has seen an entirely new Rain Bird IC irrigation system fitted to increase coverage and reduce water consumption by up to 30% across the playing surface, whilst all bunkers have been rejuvenated with a fresh new layer of white sand for greater compaction, texture and reliability.

Pietro Dal Fabbro, Chief Executive Officer at Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection, stated: “The Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course is one of the golf courses in the Algarve that has been subject to continuous improvements

over the years. We determined because of the pandemic, this would be the best time to take a step forward with a more incisive requalification of the Dom Pedro Laguna Course, raising the quality of the course and meeting the expectations of sustainable development”

Rui Grave, Head Greenkeeper at Dom Pedro Golf, added: “At the reopening of the Dom Pedro Laguna, golfers will now be able to find a golf course that consumes 20% less energy and fertilizer, as well as up to 50% less water. It will now be possible to identify protected areas for the reservation of the local avifauna, but also all the areas of the game, together with the contrast produced by the different shades of grass and heights of cut. All the fairways have been restored to their original layout, the greens have become faster and firmer, the bunkers revitalised, and the rough made more consistent for a greater playing experience.”

Originally designed by American golf course architect, Joseph Lee, the Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course is located on relatively flat and open land, with many water hazards. It is often considered different from the other four courses and a fundamental piece of the diverse golfing portfolio at the resort. Many of its key holes; including 5th, 9th, and 17th; showcase a links-style layout that offer different and varied options for golfers playing the course.

The resort is also excited to have been named as the host venue for the DP World Tour’s Portugal Masters for the 16th consecutive year. Between 27th – 30th October, Europe’s best players will once again descend upon the Algarve to battle it out across the famous Arnold Palmer-designed Dom Pedro Victoria Course for Portugal’s most coveted golfing accolade.

A Legacy of Lifestyle Quinta do Lago celebrates 50th anniversary in 2022

Quinta do Lago celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022 as the luxury Algarve resort continues to build on its reputation as one of Europe’s most iconic golf venues.

With three 18-hole championship courses – South Course, North Course and Laranjal –Quinta do Lago has become a firm-favourite for travelling golfers since first opening its doors for play in 1972, and recent, ongoing and future developments will ensure it remains one of the continent’s premier sports destinations.

Set amongst 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park and just a 15-minute drive from Faro airport, Quinta do Lago has been at the forefront of Europe’s elite golf, sports and family destinations for five

decades and features a combination of sumptuous lifestyle and world-class facilities including tennis, cycling and water sports.

Complementing the golf is a choice of 14 first-class bars and restaurants that deliver a range of delicious gastro and international cuisines, with the stunning beachside Gigi restaurant set for renovation and a new bar, while guests can enjoy an array of sports at the state-of-the-art performance centre The Campus, a world-class sports hub designed for professionals and amateurs alike to train and live well.

The resort’s boutique hotel, The Magnolia Hotel, brings a touch of palm springs to the Algarve, while 80 further contemporarystyle properties will be developed across the resort, respecting the original Quinta do Lago masterplan of its visionary creator, Andre Jordan, and bolstering its already-impressive real-estate portfolio.

Undoubtedly, it is the development of the much-loved South Course that will elevate Quinta do Lago to even higher heights.

Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, the par-72 layout soon became recognised as one

South Course

of the continent’s most prestigious courses and established itself as a flagship venue for the European Tour. Today, it is regularly ranked among Europe’s top 100 courses.

An eight-time host of the Portuguese Open, the popular layout reopened last September following a major overhaul – the centrepiece of a multi-million-euro golf investment undertaken by Europe’s premier luxury golf and lifestyle resort between 2020-2021.

Among the work to have taken place, and to help provide a consistent playing experience, all the fairways, approaches, green collars and tees have been resurfaced with a hybrid-type of Bermuda grass.

All 48 bunkers on the course have been restored to their original size, with new drainage and sand added and compacted, while several bunkers previously within the pine tree canopy have been adjusted to give access to the green and two bunkers relocated to favour the modern game.

In addition, the lakes on the third and 17th holes have been upgraded with new retaining walls giving a sharp modern look consistent with the other lakes on the course; the fairway on the eighth hole has been softened and a number of pine trees relocated to allow greater access to the green.

Perhaps the most striking change comes

on the par-4 16th green, which has been extended back left with the undergrowth to its rear cleared to present a dramatic view of the lake.

Carried out with sustainable goals in mind and with Quinta do Lago golf course superintendent Mark Tupling and his team working with the Golf Environment Organisation (GEO) Foundation, a stateof-the-art irrigation system has also been installed – maximising efficiency and reducing the use of non-renewable resources – while a planting scheme of native species has been adopted to increase biodiversity.

Away from the South Course, Quinta do Lago’s other two 18-hole championship courses – the North Course and Laranjal –have also undergone significant maintenance improvement programmes, while the resort has also invested in a new fleet of state-ofthe-art electric golf buggies and reopened its main golf clubhouse following extensive refurbishment.

To help celebrate the resort’s landmark anniversary, Quinta do Lago’s story will be documented in a ceremonial book to be released this June, covering the story and history of resort but also outlining plans for the future.

The ongoing developments will ensure Quinta do Lago remains at the forefront of luxury living, sport and lifestyle, affirming its legacy as one of the world’s most alluring golf resorts as it continues to build on its success in its semi-centennial year.

Simple post-golf stretches to reduce your soreness & improve your golf flexibility

Just as pre-golf stretching before your round helps prevent injury during the round; good post-golf stretching after your round will help keep away that unwanted soreness. The best time to stretch after a round of golf is immediately when you get off the course. Your muscles are still warm from the golf game so they will be more supple to a stretching routine. Most golfers just want to have a drink after a round, but a few minute stretches can help you play golf without pain on the next day. Below are a few exercises for golf that can be done post-golf to relieve some tension in your muscles.

A golfer’s elbow stretch

Golfers know the elbow struggle is real. Stretching it can override the repetitive stroke motions.

Shoulder Stretches

This classic stretch targets your deltoids and rotator cuff, which can enhance your swing.

To do a cross-body shoulder stretch:

• Stand tall with feet hip-width apart.

• Bring your left arm across your body.

• Bend your right arm and hook it over your left elbow.

• Use your right arm to push your left arm into your body.

• Hold for 30 seconds.

• Repeat on the other side.

Hamstring

A very simple way to stretch the hamstring is to take a golf club in both hands, get the feet about shoulder with the pose they would be for like an iron shot, try to keep that back nice and straight, and lower yourself down toward your toes.

Lower Back Stretch

Most of the time the lower back is sour after a round of golf, so it is vital to stretch it before and after the game too. Stretching keeps your muscles strong, flexible, and healthy. It may also help you prevent injury and muscle soreness. Adding solid stretching can help you take your golf game to the next level. The right moves can help:

• loosen your back

• strengthen your core

• loosen your hamstrings

• reduce shoulder, elbow, or wrist tension

Palácio Estoril

A hotel where history is made

In the Palácio Estoril Hotel you travel back in time, but on a journey that also continues in the present and into the future.

Built in 1930, today´s Palácio Hotel retains many of the characteristics of that period. The ambience of exclusiveness that pervades the Hotel makes an impression on everybody who enters it, from its imposing, entirely white facade and beautiful gardens to its elegant classic decor, which has been updated over the years but without losing its combination of timeless, luxury and sophistication.

During the Second World War, due to Portugal’s neutrality several royal families went into exile in Estoril, which became known as the “Coast of Kings”. The Hotel Palácio was the chosen home of numerous members of European royalty and was also the haunt of British and German spies, who could often be found in its bar. Later, these stories of intrigue

and espionage inspired famous novelists and filmmakers and the Hotel served as the set for the James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

The Palácio Estoril was the second home of the Spanish, Italian, French, Bulgarian and Romanian royal families, and even today remains a favourite with their descendants.

In February 2011, the Royal Gallery was created in their honour, where you can view photographs of the important members of European royalty who stayed at the Hotel. The Royal Gallery is now also one of Estoril’s tourist attractions.

From the beginning, the Palácio has hosted heads of state, emperors, kings and princes, European nobility, the world’s great artists, writers, sports champions, filmmakers and actors and many politicians who have shaped the destiny of the West. Private or State

visits, festivals and major summits bring to the Palácio a long list of distinguished guests who mingle in the public rooms and corridors with all the Hotel´s other patrons. In the public rooms, corridors and even at breakfast one can often come across a Crown Prince, a film director, a European sovereign, an actress or an internationally renowned musician.

The Palácio has been updated and has benefited from several refurbishments and renovations. Today, it offers all the comfort and convenience of a modern luxury five-star hotel while retaining all its charm of the olden days. New golf executive appointed to oversee major upgrade at Palheiro Nature Estate

Palheiro Nature Estate has taken the next steps in building for an exciting future after appointing experienced professional Paul Saunders as new golf executive director at the leading golf resort in Madeira.

Saunders took up his new role in the Portuguese archipelago at the start of the month and, among his tasks, he will be responsible for overseeing a series of upgrades at Palheiro Golf over the next 12 monthsincluding the launch of a new golf academy. The Englishman has acquired a wealth of experience in the golf industry over the last four decades having worked in an array of managerial roles in the UK, The Netherlands and, in Portugal, at Onyria Quinta da Marinha, Pestana Beloura Golf and, most recently, Belas Clube de Campo. In addition, he has also served as a board member of both Cascais Golf and the Lisbon Golf Coast promotional bodies.

Jonathan Fletcher-Blandy, president of Palheiro Nature Estate, said: “Paul brings to our team more than 40 years’ experience in the golf and leisure industry covering resort management, sales and marketing, as well as being widely versed in all areas of golf course operations. We are all very pleased to have him join our team at this exciting phase of development and with our 30th anniversary celebrations set to start in January.”

Saunders said: “I am looking forward to working closely with Jonathan and his team at the wonderful Palheiro Nature Estate. With my wife´s family coming from Funchal, I have visited the Madeira Islands on numerous occasions over the years, and I now have the opportunity to play a leading role in the progress of the estate at this magnificent destination.”

A 10-minute drive from the island’s capital, Funchal, and nearly 1,640ft above sea level, Palheiro Golf enjoys dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the ocean, while its par-72, 6,656-yard (6,086m) course was designed by renowned golf architect Cabell Robinson and is situated within the magnificent Palheiro Nature Estate, which is more than 200 years old.

At the centre of Palheiro’s latest investment plans is to open a golf academy in 2023. Offering stunning views over the Atlantic, the practice facility will feature 28 bays and a fitting centre as an all-weather space fitted with the latest ball-tracking technology. Enhancing the golfing experience will be the resort’s redesigned golf clubhouse, with acclaimed local architects Intemporaneo having been appointed to give the building a contemporary new look. As well as modernising the interior, the veranda will also receive an upgrade, while a newly installed

webcam will mean its panoramic views over Funchal Bay can be enjoyed from anywhere in the world.

Palheiro is also making a number of improvements to its renowned Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro, including carrying out an upgrade of the main house rooms and bathrooms.

New head chef Gonçalo Bita Bota has been brought in to create an exciting range of new menus and flavours throughout the resort’s three dining areas, while the chapel in the world-famous Palheiro Gardens was painted and renovated ahead of the summer wedding and christening season.

Set within unspoilt undulating countryside, the greens and fairways of Espiche Golf course have been carefully placed to balance the dual demands of the golfer and the environment, with indigenous planting throughout creating a beautiful backdrop and some challenging obstacles.

The golf course requires careful thought along the 5862 metres (6411) yards from the back tees and requires a deft touch on the short game. Bunkers guard most greens while the greens themselves are large and undulating, demanding a soft hand with the putter. Espiche Golf course in Lagos is a shotmaker’s course, where each hole poses a new challenge thanks to the variety of the layout. The par five 1st, dropping some 80 feet from the tee before rising back to the same height at the green, gives golfers an insight into the style of golf at Espiche Golf course. The 3rd

provides the sternest test on the front nine at 409 meters uphill all the way, before the short 7th and 8th offer birdie opportunities.

The par five 10th is one of the finest in all the Algarve golf courses, and challenges golfers to negotiate the progressively tighter fairway as they approach the green.

Many keen golfers will have found memories of the ‘old’ Palmares, one of the first golf courses to be built in the Algarve in the 1970’s by Frank Pennink. But come and play the new Palmares Golf and you will be blown away by the transformation.

Whereas the old course had wonderful sea views from just the first and seventeenth tees, the new Palmares Golf has stunning sea views from 90 per cent of the tees! The course has been totally transformed by the leasing American golf course designer, Robert Trent Jones Jr and no hole from the old course remains as it was. The Alvor Course (Holes 1-9)

Located primarily on the northern part of the site, the Alvor Course has a parkland character with mature trees and lovely views of the Monchique hills. Changes in elevation are integral to the design of this nine as a majority of the golf holes ascend hillsides or descend through intimate valleys. The parkland setting disappears briefly with a series of holes with more expansive views. A preview of the dunes and links holes to come is provided in the sixth and seventh holes. As the round concludes, the course again assumes the parkland character.

The Lagos Course (Holes 10-18)

The Lagos Course begins with the same parkland character. This course incorporates the only two lakes found on the entire site at the short par-3 third hole and the long par-4 sixth hole. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers into the expansive dune lands on the southwestern portion of the site. The round concludes with a climb to the clubhouse and back into a more parkland setting.

The Praia Course (Holes 19-27)

The third nine at Palmares presents the golf experience every great designer dreams of having the privilege to create: a seaside landscape with dunes exposed to the elements. The four seaside holes are between the beach and the railway line. The course opens by descending from a parkland setting. The second hole then whisks golfers into the true links part of the course. This dunes character is continued through the remainder of the Praia Golf Course with the closing hole, a strong uphill par-5, rising up out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.

The first 18 hole course of its kind to be built in the Algarve, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course started a golfing movement that is, today, famous the world over. Designed and completed in 1966 by the great Sir Henry Cotton, the course stands as a shining example to golfing architecture and one man’s passion for the great game of golf.

Whether the former championship golfer had any inkling of the mark he was laying down when he first began implementing his vision upon the Algarve paddy fields from which his course sprung, we don’t know... what we do know is the staggering extent of the legacy that he created.

A Stunning Transformation in the Southern Algarve

First he introduced thousands of trees and shrubs, completely transforming the landscape into a vegetation rich, lush land, perfect for playing the game of golf. From this initial build, there quickly sprang another 30 courses across the region... with plenty more to come. As the towering pines and eucalyptus trees reached maturity, the course was given a definitive character that remains unmatched across the entire penipnsular of the Algarve.

Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision

Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did.

The Course Today

A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course.

Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course

The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four of the

five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine - producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35.

As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par.

Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

After his success designing the Vale de Pinta course, Ronald Fream teamed up with the former world No. 1 Nick Price to create the unique design of Gramacho. With 18 holes and 27 greens, plus numerous different tee points, players are able to enjoy the same course time and time again but always with slightly different challenges.

Having hosted the Portuguese Ladies Open on a number of occasions Pestana Gramacho is recognized as a championship course enjoyable and playable even by those with a higher handicap.

Apart from the fantastic golf design, Ronald and Nick managed to incorporate the traditional landscape by utilizing the natural stone outcrops, historical dry stone walling and existing ancient trees with some artfully sculpted lakes and bunkers. Designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., this course complements the neighbouring Faldo Course and also takes full advantage of being situated in a fertile valley.

Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.

This course has tees that are generally connected to the fairways, but its greater overall distance, the water hazards and big greens provide its challenge. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are strong features.

SALGADOS GOLF COURSE

Salgados Golf Course, situated in one of the best-known regions of the Algarve, between Albufeira and Armação de Pêra, is already a ‘postcard’ of Portugual golf courses. In fact, the proximity of the sea and the variety of lakes make this a very unique and interesting test of golfing skills, different from other courses in the Algarve.

Salgados Golf course opened in September 1994 and is situated near the extensive Galé Beach between Pera and albufeira. The low lying wetlands of the landscape have been skilfully used in the layout wich incorporates 14 water hazards. To compensate for the dauting water hazards, Salgados has been designed to have only semi-rough for general play and the overall lenght has been restricted to 6140 metres from the championship tees. It is a conventional par 72 course wich four par 3 holes and four par 5 holes. The first nine are laid out in a roughly anti-clokwise loop starting and ending close to the clubhouse. One of the toughest holes is the 415 metre par 4 7th, which runs along the sea-side of the

course with a narrow Fairway between large dunes. Among the back nine, only yhe 180 metre par 3 17th is devoid of water hazards, but on five of the remaining holes players will be able to sacrífice distance for accuracy off the tee and still have opportunities to score pars. The exceptions are the 390 metre par 4 10th, and the unusual sequence of two links-type par 5s – the 14th which measures 490 metres and the 15th at 545 metres. These presente a tough testo f golfing ability before the relatively benign three hole home stretch. Traditional Bermuda Tifton 419 grass has been used for the fairways, Rye grass for the semirough, Pencross for the greens and Penneagle for the Tees.

PINHAL GOLF COURSE

The Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course was opened for play in 1976 and owes its personality to both the original designer Frank Pennink, who also turned his hand to Dom Pedro Old Course Golf Club nearby, and Robert Trent Jones Sr., who made a number of significant refinements in 1985.

Traversing undulating parkland, many fairways are lined by pine trees. However, perhaps an even more significant challenge is presented by the Umbrella and Atlantic pines which present themselves on fairways and at times on the approach into greens. Length has recently been added on a number of holes, which ensure the test originally envisioned by Pennink is maintained. At a substantial 6,353 metres from the white tee markers, and with a par of 72, Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course is

certainly no pushover, although golfers will be pleased to learn that the ponds and stream which come into play on five holes should not, for the most part, present a serious threat.

One of the most remarked upon features of Dom Pedro Pinhal Golf Course, in Vilamoura, is the stunning panorama provided from the clubhouse, which extends over the excellent driving range and practice facilities and beyond. Completely renovated at the turn of the millennium, its veranda offers the perfect setting for post-round relaxation.

At the time of creation, Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, with an area of about 90 hectares, was hailed as the most ambitious golf project Portugal had ever witnessed. Designed by true golfing legend, Arnold Palmer, there is absolutely no doubt that it has lived up to that lofty billing.

This is one of the golf courses in Vilamoura considered to be one of the best and most challenging in Europe, and features an exceptional driving range and a putting green of some 2,500 m2. All of this has made it the obvious venue of choice for many of the top international tournaments to visit Portugal in recent times. Indeed, it has served as the host venue to the Portugal Masters on every occasion since 2007, while the World Cup Championship was staged there in 2005.

The Par-72 Championship layout, measuring 6.651 meters (7,273 yards) from the Palmer tees, incorporates and has ensured the preservation of natural wetlands on-site, as well as the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. A significant proportion of Dom Pedro Victoria’s acreage is occupied by lakes, forming hazards to be avoided but which also have a strategic purpose in providing reservoirs for irrigation. A number of teeing options on each hole (often as many as six are offered), accompanied by wide but undulating fairways, provide a fair test of golf, although water and cleverly-positioned bunkers pose a constant threat.

The South Course is the crown jewel of Quinta do Lago. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, who introduced American-standard greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve. The course was renovated in 2020 – with a €7 million investement.

A favourite among European Tour professionals, the South Course calls for accurate drives and precise shots, but rewards players for their efforts with the stunning backdrop of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Regularly included in the Golf World magazine’s ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in Europe’, the par-72 layout has received widespread praise for its strategically-placed hazards and varying difficulty across the 18 holes. Having hosted the Portuguese Open on no fewer than eight occasions, the South Course is regarded as one of Portugal’s premier golfing venues.

The recent upgrade of the iconic layout formed the centrepiece of a multi-million euro golf improvement plan announced by this top Algarve destination resort.

As part of the South Course’s major overhaul, all fairways, bunkers, tees and green surrounds have been revamped, as well as subtle changes made to a number of holes to enhance the playing experience. The improvements were carried out with sustainable goals in mind and the resort team worked with the Golf Environment Organisation (GEO) Foundation to further enhance its environmental stewardship.

From Faro Airport: Leave the airport and drive approximately 3 km until you see signs for Faro and Portimão. Turn right towards Portimão. This will bring you to main road - EN 125. Continue for approximately 4 km and then turn right direction to Portimão. Keep driving for approximately 3 Km and turn right to Almancil. SAN LORENZO

The San Lorenzo Golf Course was opened in 1988 and takes advantage of wonderful topography on the Quinta do Lago estate, winding its way gently over undulating pine woodland. The 18 holes lie in the unspoilt South east corner of Quinta do Lago, bordering the Ria Formosa Estuary and salt water lagoons.

The course was designed by the American golf architect Joseph Lee and the beautiful Bermuda grass fairways provide perfect playing conditions.

The San Lorenzo Golf Course is laid out in a figure of eight and at the heart lies the San Lorenzo Clubhouse with a golf pro shop; comfortable changing facilities; welcoming bar and restaurant.

The fifth, the shortest hole on the San Lorenzo Golf Course, open up a magnificent vista with the backdrop of golden beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. Drama begins to unfold at the sixth hole where the San Lorenzo Golf Course borders the estuary and great demands are put on accuracy.

The eighth hole turns inland and is without a doubt one of the most spectacular par 5s, bordering the largest of the inland lakes and forcing the third shot to carry water to a tight

but beautifully positioned green. With the lake to your right, the tendency is to favour the left side; however bunkers and encroaching pines lie and wait on this side.

It is difficult to describe the breathtaking finale that awaits you at the eighteenth hole. Here without a doubt is one of the finest finishes in golf that you will ever experience, and has become world renowned. There is no escape from the water here and the prefect drive merely lessens the challenge of a shot

across water left and right, back and front to a tiny targeted green.

Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In the nearby foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve has to offer. But maybe most enjoyable of all, are the peaceful surroundings of a construction free resort. Possibly the only one on the Algarve.

The decision to build a golf course, on the land of Quinta de Benamor, in Tavira, Algarve, was made in 1986. The Owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton to make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry Cotton was inspired by the beautiful old church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by the spectacular location.

The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500 metres (6,100 yards), which offers a pleasant playing experience, to players of all standards. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The indigenous olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees, many centuries old, feature aesthetically and in playing terms. Water hazards and sand bunkers are located to test the strategy and striking ability of the player.

The Penn A4 greens and tees are simply superb. The fairways of Bermuda Sahara and cool-season grasses, provide good lies for wood and iron shots.

The Benamor Golf Driving Range offers a complete practice facility on a nice and pleasant natural setting whether you are an experienced player or total beginner. It has 16 mats at front end of Driving Range and practice grass at top end with target flags and distance markers.

A Chipping and Pitching green is also located

at top end with a bunker to practice from. For players who wish to concentrate on their putting we have a lovely 9 hole Putting Green situated between Clubhouse and Driving Range.

Only 25 km from Lisbon, Located in a protected pine woodland and close to the coastal town of Caparica, Aroeira is a unique estate comprising of two golf courses and a host of impressive mansions. Designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1973, Aroeira I was affectionately christened the ‘Wentworth of Lisbon’ by the UK press and it is easy to see why.

This course, opened in 1929, was refurbished and extended to 27 holes in 1936, by McKenzie Ross. The Quinta da Marinha Golf Course, in Cascais, has 18 holes with 5.870 meters of pure nature and big challenges. This par 71, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, offers fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains.

In this course you can really see the style of Robert Trent Jones in the elevated greens and tees, with many bunkers in play and, as expected, some water hazards. Every hole is different, you will have to use all the clubs in the bag and play with strategy to make a good score.

Some of the holes you won’t forget are: Hole 3, Par 4, it is one of the most famous holes of the Portuguese Golf, with view to the Atlantic Ocean, its picture was used for many years to promote “Golf in Portugal” abroad. Hole 4, Par 3, played over a natural ravine to a quite demanding Green. Hole 13, Par 3, you play over a big lake to an elevated green well protected with 4 bunkers.

Hole 18, a beautiful Par 5, with two lakes, all shots have to be well thought to make sure you are not penalized by the water.

Quinta da Marinha has been host to many high profile professional competitions, such as the Ladies Masters in 1988, won by South African player Laurette Maritz-Atkins. In 2002, the PGA Seniors Tour Championship was won by Denis Durnian after a dramatic suddendeath play-off with the former Ryder Cup star, Eamonn Darcy. And in 2007, the Challenge Tour, was won by Ross McGowan, shooting 66 to beat former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker who was leading the after round three.

The golf course design process required a long term, careful study of the site conditions, characteristics and restrictions. The Dye team worked closely with the local government’s

planning and engineering departments as well as several concerned national ministries.

The design evolved through many reviews and exhaustive revisions to ensure a minimum disturbance of the environment and protection of the areas of existing drainage basins, dinosaur fossils and heritage pine trees.

VIDAGO PALACE

The award-winning Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course was redesigned by the firm Cameron & Powell from an original by Mackenzie Ross built in 1936. The course has now been rebuilt from scratch to meet USGA specifications for greens and tees and has been transformed into a par 72 course.

The Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course is a course of striking contrasts, all with a particular respect for the natural surroundings. Distinctive features of this course include the support walls of all the tees, which are made of local stone, and the century-old trees, almost all of which have been preserved.

The first four holes, played within the Centenary Park of the Vidago Palace Hotel, anticipate the next 11, newly built in the Oura valley. The last three are played in the upper part of the Centenary Park, and afford

magnificent views to the neighboring hills and villages. Every hole is a challenge and each of the last nine is completely different from the one before, giving golfers the opportunity to deploy their full range of shots.

The comprehensive nature of the Vidago Palace offering has been demonstrated by it hosting the Portuguese Senior Open in 2014 –part of the European Senior Tour – as well the Bonallack and Patsy Hankins Trophies in 2016, the international amateur match between Europe and Asia- Pacific.
