Welcome to the South Central Golf Guide Welcome to the first edition of the South Central Golf Guide, a magazine designed to help local and national golfers select and find the course they wish to play in the South central area of England.
The magazine is split into 6 areas. Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. These areas are colour coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found.
It gives each golf club the chance to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who wish to visit.
A full golf course listing is also featured in the magazine, containing the telephone number & website of every golf course in the South Central area.
The South Central Golf Guide is brought to you by Golf Guide Publications using a formula that has proved a huge success on the Costa del Sol for many years and is proving to have similar success since it’s introduction to the UK. In addition to The South Central Golf Guide here, there are the existing publications in the North West & Cumbria, Ireland and Yorkshire & The North East with plans to extend to further regions in the UK in the next few years. This 5 time yearly magazine features local and international news items, with specialist editorial on a select number of courses each month. Including useful information and directions to the course, these editorials are the chance for each club to highlight themselves and detail any offers and deals they have running during that period.
In addition to The Golf Guide itself, we are going to be running ‘The South Central Golf Guide Tour’. More details will be available in our next issue of ‘The South Central Golf Guide’. The competitions will offer the winning pair from each event a four day trip to Spain which covers flights, accommodation & 3 rounds of golf on top quality Spanish golf courses, together with other golf prizes on the day. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels, professionals, club players, beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing venues in the South central area for 2012. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels from the middle of July.

through some ancient woodland and takes advantage of some natural water features.
The course encompasses a wonderful blend of rolling countryside, lakes, streams, natural copse and woodland. Greens are constructed to U.S.G.A standards and extensive drainage and irrigation work has been carried out since the courses opened.
The 4th course, the orange 9 was opened in 2007, with stunning views of the Wiltshire countryside the owners and architect tried to provide something very different for the members and visitors to the club, constructing an inland links style downland course with wide fairways yet testing approach shots for the golfer to think about.
Another objective of the team at Cumberwell is to provide a perfect haven for not only the keen golfer but also for all sorts of wildlife. The bird boxes, including barn owl boxes have already been installed on the new course in anticipation of increasing the number of sightings, which are becoming increasingly common.
The setting is stunning as well. The course gently climbs to the highest part of the estate where the views are truly inspiring. The seventh on the Orange course is a case in point. The driving line is to just skirt the collection of three bunkers on the left side;
Acres of managed long grassland have been established including a few acres sown with a wild flower seed so as to establish a meadow area. These additional habitats are ideal for many small mammals and reptiles, which will later become lunch for the buzzards and owls.
The clubs motto ‘Golf for all’ has led to continual development of the course and facilities. The original farm land with its established woodland and rolling parkland formed the basis of the original 2 course’s, the Red and the Yellow opened in 1994, the red 9 features flowing streams and undulating parkland and the yellow 9 is plays

The next shot on this par five would be directed at the copse of poplars over the hill whilst the approach in would be lined up on one of the impressive manor houses located in the picturesque village of South Wraxall which forms part of the backdrop. A finer spot would be hard to imagine.

“Cumberwell has become renown throughout the South and South West of England for its fantastic practice facilities.”
Practice Facilities Cumberwell has become renown throughout the South and South West of England for its fantastic practice facilities.
Head Professional John Jacobs is the England U16 Boys lead coach and the England boys make use of Cumberwell’s facilities with training weekends throughout the winter.
The 10 acre driving range, which opened in March 2001, with target green and yardage markers boasts 10 quality indoor bays including a large teaching bay with the latest software in video swing analysis. Another 10 bays are available outside and a new large grass practice tee will be opening in June 2012, combined with top quality range balls any golfer from novice to elite has no excuses!
John is also involved with the England Golf AASE program and well as being coach to Wiltshire boys and girls teams.
The short game area, opened in 2009, is one of the best facilities in the South West of England, if not the whole country. The 1,800 square metre USGA constructed green is surrounded by 3 bunkers, numerous humps and hollows and seven different specially designed teeing areas, allowing all aspects of your short game to be mastered.
Cumberwell Park also continues to build for the future with the success of its Junior Golf Academy. The academy was launched by club professionals Paul Morss and Ben Lloyd in 2007 with the idea of breaching the gap between having lessons on the driving range and playing golf on the course. Paul quotes ‘we wanted to find a way of keeping the children who came for lessons interested in the game and the natural progression was to try and get them from
the driving range onto the golf course, the academy finds a great balance between coaching and learning for themselves.’ The academy, now about to begin its 6th year has seen 50 children aged between 6 – 16 sign up each year with a number going onto to become full junior members and obtain official handicaps. Monday evenings throughout the spring and summer see the academy students venture onto the course for 2 hours, playing shortened versions of the holes in small groups of 5 and 6, each group being supervised and taught the basics of the game including rules and etiquette. The children can even get a taste of competition with the Academy Championship during the school summer holidays, who knows, the next Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam may be gracing the fairways of Cumberwell on a Monday Evening, watch this space...

The top two on course restaurants are located in a new fairway edge, double-deck, pavilion on the 15th hole at Lytham, sharing this prime viewing position with a complex of corporate chalets. Also new for 2012 a bistro style restaurant in the busy tented village that is proving popular with smaller businesses and golf fans treating themselves to a packaged day out at golf’s original major.
While for the wider business economy of the North West the event will deliver a £90 million economic boost, a fact that is not lost on Lancashire County Council Chief Executive, Phil Halsall,
The £2m investment is made up of the new double-deck pavilion, enhanced event TV and leaderboard information, a commitment to sourcing local produce and higher hospitality staff levels. The Open Championship Official Hospitality programme is the only provider of on course facilities and makes a significant financial contribution to grassroots golf development programmes in the North West.
“The Open this year will be the Championship’s third visit to the North West in just seven years. In hard times the cash injection that comes with hosting the event can make a real difference to the economic outlook of the region”. For those thinking of buying a hospitality package time is running short. The facilities on course have benefited from a £2m investment and combined package sales for this year’s Championship (18-22 July 2012) have surged
Commenting on the marked increase in package sales Open Championship Official Hospitality Programme Director, Brett Tonkyn said: “We have had a great response from businesses to our new offer at The Open with people reacting positively to the enhanced facilities
and recognising the fact that golf gives more quality time with customers and colleagues than any other sport.” “A further rush of sales is anticipated in the post Easter period and already private chalets for 30 and 50 people and the bistro style Open Champions Restaurant are sold out for Open Championship Friday,” added Tonkyn. Packages at The Open range from £250 to £599 per person and include priority parking, fast track lanes at paygates and catering options that range from bistro bar to fine dining. Callaway Golf Global Launch of RAZR Fit
Building on 29 years of clubmaking excellence, Callaway’s much-anticipated RAZR Fit line of woods represents the Company’s most advanced products to date. By combining the performance benefits gained from several proprietary technologies with an easy-tounderstand, adjustable hosel - plus moveable weights to promote draw or neutral ball flight - Callaway is empowering players around the world to dial in their game with RAZR Fit. Marking a new standard in performance customization, RAZR Fit’s straightforward adjustability delivers optimum performance and real results for every golf swing. “We are particularly proud of the RAZR Fit products because of the performance gains we have achieved for golfers while adding the benefits of adjustability,” said Dr. Alan Hocknell, Sr. Vice President of Research & Development, Callaway Golf. “Callaway is not just entering the adjustability race with the introduction of RAZR Fit, we are taking the
pole position. The adjustable features and other proprietary technologies allow golfers to play a more meaningful role than ever before in their journey to optimized performance.” The RAZR Fit Driver and RAZR Fit Fairway Woods both feature Callaway’s renowned OptiFit® adjustability system—designed for easy use and noticeable changes in trajectory for each of the settings. The system allows golfers to adjust the club’s face angle to three address positions: Open, Square and Closed. This adjustment is controlled within the “cog”, a rotatable element of the hosel that changes the angle of the shaft axis relative to the head. Rotating the cog enables golfers to choose a preferred look at address while also minimizing a slice or hook generated by the club’s delivery to the ball. The RRP of the Callaway RAZR Fit Driver is £329. For more information visit: www.callawaygolf.com
Phil Mickelson likes the versatility of his new 9.5-degree Callaway RAZR Fit driver - including his ability to use it off the fairway. In the first round of the Northern Trust Open, for example, Mickelson used the driver off the fairway for his second shot on the par-5 11th hole and here is what he said: “I didn’t think it was going to necessarily be reachable into that wind, but I was able to hit a low drive off the tee that scooted along the ground, and I felt like if I could hit one more of those with a driver I could get right up by the green,” he said. “Some drivers you just cannot do it. Some drivers it’s not versatile enough, but this one is.”
BEWARE THE BUNKERS Dave Tindall It’s 11 years since Royal Lytham & St Annes last staged The Open so the first thing that newcomers to the famous Lancashire links will notice are the bunkers. There are 206 of them and they can be incredible penal. I was lucky enough to play the course in mid-April and not only did I keep finding sand, I was also often left with impossible lies. Time and time again my ball finished right up against a sheer face and I had no choice but to play out backwards. The best advice to the pros this summer therefore is not to go in them in the first place! The last three Open winners at Royal Lytham – Seve Ballesteros, David Duval and Tom Lehman – would appear to be vastly contrasting characters with very different golf games. However, all three could be described as deep thinkers and all have achieved the rare distinction of climbing to number one in the world rankings. In other words, the cream rises to the top at Lytham, something you notice when looking at the other winners there Gary Player, Tony Jacklin, Bob Charles, Peter Thomson, Bobby Locke and Bobby Jones. So my pick for 2012 is someone who ticks both boxes – a former world number one who has the smarts to plot his way to victory. Step forward Martin Kaymer. The German is already a major winner having landed the 2010 USPGA while his last two Open starts have resulted in a 7th at St Andrews and a 12th at Royal St. George’s.
Win a pair of tickets for The Open Championship 2012 at Royal Lytham and St Annes Dave Tindall, skysports.com Golf Editor is tipping Martin Kaymer for The Open, and you have a chance to be there!
At the time of writing he’s 22/1 with Sky Bet and that looks a good price. One other bet…. back Miguel Angel Jimenez to be the first round leader. He was fifth after day one here in 2001 and his end-of-round positions after Thursday’s play in the last six Opens read: 3rd, 74th, 1st, 15th, 8th, 2nd.
Golf Guide publications have got together with Open Hospitality to offer a Golf Guide reader and a friend a chance to see the best golfers in the world take on this famous links course on the 15th – 22nd of July. Simply email or write to Golf Guide Publications competitions@golfguidepublications.com 6 keats Lane, Wincham, Cheshire, CW9 6PP with your Name, Address and Contact details and the answer to the following question: How many bunker are there on Royal Lytham & St Annes? One of the biggest draws of the system for golfers throughout the UK has been the flexibility of playing 16 De Vere courses, while still offering the advantages of a single club membership. Members are able to nominate a ‘home club’, hold an official handicap, and play in club competitions, without being tied to a single course. The points based system has meant that the De Vere Club member is free to play their designated ‘Home Club’, but still travel to other De Vere venues and experience the same benefits as a regular member. With venues all over the UK, including Wokefield Park in Berkshire, European Tour venue Wychwood Park in Cheshire, and Oulton Hall in Leeds, golfers have an enviable plethora of golf courses to play throughout the year. If points ever run out, golfers have the option of ‘topping up’ and continuing to play as normal.
The De Vere Club Celebrates Revolutionary Membership De Vere is celebrating the second anniversary of its pioneering membership scheme, the De Vere Club, which has experienced remarkable success since being launched by Honorary Captain Peter Allis in March 2010. De Vere has changed the way modern golfers look at golf club memberships with a unique approach that has been championed for its flexibility and affordability. The Club offers golfers the chance to play 16 premium golf courses at 11 De Vere venues across the UK, for an initial payment of just £295 and includes Championship layouts such as Slaley Hall in Northumberland and The Carrick on Loch Lomond. In just two years the De Vere Club has received backing from sporting legends Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff and Harry Redknapp, as well as TV golf personality Sophie Horn, to become the fastest growing golf membership in the country. Daniel Hodson, De Vere’s Director of Golf, Leisure, & Spa, commented, “The 2nd anniversary is a significant milestone for the De Vere Club. At a time when golf memberships across the country are static or declining, it’s great for us to be able to offer amateur golfers an affordable way of becoming members at some of the best courses in the country. Back in 2010, we felt the time was right to
create a ground-breaking new model to help golfers whose needs weren’t being met by the traditional style of club membership. Two years on and the De Vere Club has exceeded our expectations with golfers responding well to the offer of diversity and affordability. Adding spa treatments to the De Vere Club has ensured that it has continued to evolve over the last 12 months, and offers our golfers more variety than any other membership.”
Members have also benefitted from a whole host of added extras, including discounts on hotel rooms, spa, golf equipment, food and drinks, plus an attractive referral package if they introduce friends and family to the friendly and fun De Vere Club experience. De Vere’s aim has been to change the status quo of the archetypal golf club by creating an attractive social hub and friendly family environment for the 21st Century golfer. Significant investment in recent years has ensured immaculately maintained Championship standard golf courses, as well as stylish clubhouses with exquisite dining, relaxed dress codes, luxurious spas and state of the art golf academies. Brokenhurst Badger & Veterans Open
Second Carswell Open Day held in April
Ellesborough Ladies Junior Champion
A couple of years ago when Neil Hallam Jones took over Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club as General Manager he was checking out the clubs document storage in the loft and came across a stuffed Badger. Now every year, in May the Club Secretary and Club Pro from the surrounding clubs team up and play for this unusual piece of taxidermy. John Jacob, Club President presents the trophy each year and past winners include; 2010 Iain McColl & Peter Stow from Hankley Common Golf Club.
The second Carswell Open Day took place on Saturday 28th April. A great day cannot happen without support from golfers who want to play and sponsors who are happy to put up prizes. 37 Teams of four braved the cold and wet and played a “Matt Maker” format, which finished with all four players shooting at two flags on the last three holes. Generally, the scoring was pretty tight with most scoring in the high 80s and low 90s, 96 points was par for the format, but four teams separated themselves by scoring over 100 points. With seven team prizes and 23 spot prizes up for grabs the competition was tense.
Ellesborough lies in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, with stunning views over the Oxford plain. Once part of the Chequers estate, with a long and illustrious history stretching back over more than 100 years, Ellesborough has enjoyed the patronage of Prime Ministers and statesmen such as Harold Wilson and Bill Clinton.
Veterans Open - Thursday 28th June 2012 This year the Veterans’ Open is being run as a Stableford Qualifying Competition. Competitors must have reached the age of 60 years by the date of the event. The entry is limited to players with a handicap of 24 or less and full handicap allowance will be given. The closing date for entries is Thursday 14th June 2012, and are on a first come first served basis. The entrance fee is £37 to include competition entry, coffee and bacon roll on arrival with a hot and cold buffet after play.
Paul Barrington entertained the crowd with an hour long trick shot display. Hitting a putter close to 300yds and multiple long drives wowed the guests and made them reflect on how hard they make their own games. The overall winning team included this years Tour School winner ‘Dave Dixon’. Dave had a week off from the European Tour but supported the event with a local team.
The club regularly hosts the BB&O Open and in 2011 hosted the EWGA English Girls’ Championship. Pictured above is the club captain with Hayley Davis, winner of the Girls Nationals last year.

Temple Golf Club A Course for All Seasons Temple was founded in 1909, designed by Willie Park Junior of Musselburgh and is considered to be something of a hidden gem. The golf course is beautifully situated in unspoilt landscape and enjoys extensive panoramic views of the river Thames and Chiltern Hills beyond. The view from the 1st tee is simply breathtaking.
Built on chalk downland, the golf course is free draining and stands up well to adverse weather conditions with winter greens and tees rarely used. The course layout is challenging and interesting; difficult enough to test the low handicap player but friendly enough to encourage those with higher handicaps.

PRO TIP
Stack & Tilt
®
The Fundamentals The objective of Stack & Tilt® is to enable golfers to develop a reliable feel in order to project the ball in a predictable manner. To achieve this, a systematic approach to problem solving must be employed. One of the specificities of the Stack & Tilt® system is the re-definition of the game’s fundamentals. Traditionally golfers are taught that the aim, grip, stance, alignment and ball position are fundamental to good play and beginner golfers are made to focus heavily on these aspects.
Fundamental 1. Ability to hit the ground in the same spot (contact) There is usually a direct correlation between a golfer’s handicap and their ability to hit the ground in the same spot repeatedly. The better players will hit the ground on the target side of the ball whereas the higher handicap golfers will show more variation and will often hit the ground before the ball or not at all. Shifting the weight forwards sufficiently will help achieve this.
Analysis of the world’s best golfers, however, shows that in reality none of these players do these things in the same way. As a result, these must be labelled as variables and in this way, fundamentals ought to be something that each golfer demonstrates in the same manner. If you have the chance to see a Pro Tournament, you will notice that these players do have fundamental aspects of play in common.
Fundamental 2. Enough power to play the golf course (distance) You need to hit the ball far enough to reach all the holes in regulation. To achieve this, allow your hips to turn and your hands to move inwards during your backswing. We promote depth rather than width in order to benefit from angular momentum. Think of the backswing as a catapult rather than as a spring.
Philippe Bonfanti Stack & Tilt® Authorised Instructor The Golfing Machine - Authorised Instructor PGA Professional at Isle of Purbeck Golf Club www.philippebonfantigolf.co.uk
Fundamental 3. A Predictable shot pattern (direction) Where the golf ball starts is primarily a function of where the clubface is pointing and the club path in relation to the clubface orientation is responsible for the curve. When you understand this relationship you can start to hit any shot you want. Focusing on these fundamentals in this order will shorten your learning curve or your entry into golf. Put yourself to the test with the 1st Fundamental Challenge: Try to master the first fundamental. Draw a line on the ground and imagine there is a golf ball on this line. Make your swing and note where contact with the ground occurs. Learning to recognize the factor you need to prioritise is the first step towards improving your game.

Whenever I see golfers who refuse to carry a driver, always hitting irons and fairway woods from the tee, I can’t help but feel they are missing out on one of the biggest joys of playing golf - crushing long, straight drives! If more golfers paid attention to the setup necessary for hitting the driver, they would get a lot more satisfaction out of their game, and even lower their handicap. Why wouldn’t you want at least 20 more yards from the tee? Pictured here I am demonstrating how a lot of golfers tend to address the ball incorrectly with the driver. Although the ball is positioned towards my left heel, my stance is too narrow. My weight is favouring the left foot, causing my chest (your swings low point) and head to align over the ball, and the shoulders to become too level. All this creates a descending angle of attack which results in a disastrous mix of skied, low launching or sliced drives.

A lot of golfers address the ball incorrectly with the driver.
PRO TIP
South Central Golf Guide
Good driving starts with a good set-up...
(1) Tee-up with at least half the ball above the clubhead to allow space for it to ascend into the ball. Position the ball forward in the stance.
The key to hitting the driver successfully is to strike the ball with a slightly ascending clubhead through impact. Sounds easy - but to achieve this the body has to be in the correct position at setup.
(5)
(2) Make a wide stance to create a shallow angle of attack. (3) Ensure your weight favours the right side.
So follow these tips and start reaching for the driver out on the golf course. Get yourself into a better position at address - stay behind the ball at impact - and enjoy longer walks from the tee box!
(4)
(4) Keep your chest (the point where the swing bottoms out) and head behind the ball. (5) Your shoulders should be pointing to the sky. I call this the “launch position - and it is very much the position that all great drivers of the ball get into.

Berkshire Introduction
Photos courtesy VisitBritain
Berkshire Berkshire lies in the south east of England and stretches 60 miles west from London to the Wiltshire border.
Windsor Castle lies in Berkshire and in 1974 the county has been recognised by HM Queen as the Royal County of Berkshire.
Lots of tourist attractions here to keep any visitor happy, with river walks and trips, countryside to explore, and we have travel guides to the main towns and cities in the county as well as some of the villages.
In 1998 the county was divided into six districts: West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, Windsor and Maidenhead and Slough. However, the non-metropolitan county was not abolished and it is the only county in England to have multiple districts but no county council.
The Thames runs along the northern boundary of Berkshire and this area, together with the parts of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire that border the river, is known as the Thames Valley. Ideal for those long walks along the Thames.. An ancient county, Berkshire dates back to the time when King Alfred set the County Boundaries and takes its name from the large forest of birch trees that once grew there.
Berkshire also hosts the popular Legoland theme park, always a favourite with young visitors. With some of the finest inland courses in the country, such as Sunningdale (host to several famous golf tournaments), The Berkshire, and Bearwood Lakes amongst many others, Berkshire is a golfing oasis not to be missed.

The Bearwood estate was, until relatively recently, part of Windsor Great Park the hunting grounds of the Kings of England since the 11th century. Whilst bears and wild boar have long departed, deer can be regularly seen drinking from the lakes through the early morning mists. Recognised as one of the finest inland courses to be built in Britain in the past twenty years, Bearwood Lakes is eminently playable all year round with many exciting challenges from a good selection of well positioned tees. The golf course meanders through a backdrop of mature pines, beach and
cedar trees that provide the perfect backdrop to this stunning piece of land. The emphasis at Bearwood Lakes is private, peaceful and above all inspiring. Our stunning layout was designed by Martin Hawtree, who’s family golf architects practice was founded in 1912. The course rolls around the Bearwood estate and it is well worth pausing for a few seconds to take in the natural beauty of this wonderful setting. Bearwood Lakes is a private golf club for members and invited guests. Please call or email us for the very latest information.

been preserved and enhanced, using modern greenkeeping methods and machinery. A forestry and heathland conservation programme is in place, and the club’s policy is to ensure the longterm future of its outstanding asset. The sandy heathland has excellent drainage properties, resulting in fine year-round golfing conditions. There are no weak holes, but one of the most memorable is the last, which requires an accurate drive over a mountain of heather to a hidden landing point. Sunningdale

Sunningdale Golf Club Sunningdale is blessed with two championship courses laid out on the most glorious piece of heathland winding their way through heather, gorse and pine, each one of which has its own individual charm.
Major Championships have been staged in every decade of Sunningdale’s history and its Champions include James Braid, Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Max Faulkner, Bobby Locke, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Bob Charles, Gary Player, Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer. Old Course Sunningdale Old Course was designed by Willie Park Junior and opened in 1900. It was laid out in the last days of the gutty ball, over a mixture of hills, heath and woodland that had hitherto not been considered as suitable for golf course construction. Urns containing fourteen iron-age skeletons were excavated during its construction. The course was considered extremely long and its popularity owed much to the development of the Haskell ball, initially imported from the United States.
Willie Park’s design was considered revolutionary at the time, and within a few years Harry Colt, the Club Secretary, had modified several holes and drastically altered others. Bernard Darwin in “Golf Courses of the British Isles”, 1910 believed that several of the holes had been greatly improved by the Colt changes. The Old Course is considered one of the best inland courses in the UK and is regularly found in various “100 top courses” rating lists. Many amateur and professional golfing events have been played here including the News of the World Professional Match Play Championship, numerous European Open Championships, many Ladies Open Championships, the Walker Cup, and more recently the International Final Qualification for the Open Championship

New Course Sunningdale’s New Course was designed by Colt and Morrison in 1923, on heathland including small copses and broom. The first five holes were more or less as now, although the track of the first and eighteenth holes had to be reversed. Colts sixth hole played down the line of today’s ninth hole, though along its left hand ridge to a green over the path down to Valleys End and the Brickmaker’s Arms. Holes 7-10 were hilly and in today’s woods right of the tenth hole on the Old. The tenth hole was played from the hill above, onto today’s tenth green, and the last eight holes
were much the same as current, although the thirteenth was fifty yards longer, and other green locations have been altered. More land became available in 1934, allowing architect Tom Simpson to scrap the hilly holes and create a clockwise loop, with a 500 yard tenth onto a green on today’s eleventh fairway, and the course was renamed the Jubilee course. This was not popular with members and in 1939 Colt and Morrison were asked to reassess. They reversed the loop, using Simpson’s greens, and built new greens for the thirteenth and eighteenth holes. Their re-design has lasted.

Buckinghamshire Introduction
Buckinghamshire A small county, merely 27 miles across east to west at its widest point and 50 miles in length, Buckinghamshire is nevertheless full of charm and beauty. Its numerous rivers such as the Thames and the Great Ouse, river valleys and hills, the Chilterns and picturesque villages, make for a wonderful place to tour, particularly on foot. Aylesbury, the county town of Buckinghamshire, is a lively market town steeped in history. Located at the foot of the Chiltern Hills and at the heart of the rich agricultural Vale of Aylesbury. The town was a focal point in the English Civil War in the 17th century. The ancient town of Buckingham dates back to the 7th century and contains some fine Georgian buildings as well as the imposing town hall and the distinctive Old Gaol, now a centre for Buckinghamshire Tourist Information.
Nearby is Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit and Stowe Landscape Gardens, one of the finest Georgian landscape gardens in Britain. The county is awash with wonderful golf courses, some of which you may have heard of before, others not so well known but still worth the trip. That’s the kind of opportunity that awaits would-be visitors to Buckinghamshirethe chance to explore and see something new.
“Its numerous rivers and picturesque villages make for a wonderful place to tour.”

Ellesborough
Ellesborough Golf Club is situated between Aylesbury and High Wycombe. If approaching from High Wycombe take the route through Princes Risborough. The optimum route from Aylesbury is through Wendover.
The greens are a strong feature of the course and have long held a reputation as some of the finest and most challenging in the south east of England. The club regularly hosts the BB&O Open and in 2011 hosted the EWGA English Girls’
Championship. This superb inland links course is a test for golfers of all standards and the hospitality in the clubhouse will round off a wonderful day of golf. Signature Hole: Each hole has it’s own unique attributes, but among the most memorable is the 5th, a tough par 3 which is well protected by bunkers all round. Possessing one of the hardest greens on the course, with a difficult undulating putting surface and some very subtle borrows, you should be happy to walk off with a three. Greg Norman described it as ‘the longest 6 iron he has ever played’!

Set in over 200 acres of rolling Buckinghamshire countryside, the course was designed by Jonathan Gaunt, one of the UK’s leading golf architects. To many, it is known as the closest a parkland course can be to a Links due to its beautiful water features and sometimes windy conditions. Here at Magnolia Park Golf & Country Club we believe members and visitors alike should be able to experience the full benefits of our courses regardless of the season with the greens and tees open all year round. Played from the forward tees, the subtle undulating fairways will offer an exciting game for golfers of all abilities, whilst the
competition tees give the more experienced golfers a course with Championship potential. Magnolia Park is not a course to be taken lightly; if you’re playing well and taking full advantage of the conditions you can have a very enjoyable round. Peg it up thinking there’s a a low score to be had, this course will inevitably beat you. Signature Hole: 15th, Par 4, 446 Yards Aim for the left side taking the trouble out of play. The second into the green, 9 times out of 10, is always a club longer.
STOKE PARK
50
Stoke Park Stoke Park’s 27 hole Championship parkland golf course, known as Stoke Poges, is one of the finest of its kind in the world. Designed in 1908 by one of the greatest course architects of his generation, Harry Shapland Colt, Stoke Park became the UK’s first country club.
The course has received many accolades over the years, including ‘Golf Club of the Year’ and ‘Top 100 Courses you must play in the World’ by Golf World as well as a Gold placing in the HSBC Regional Course Rankings. Stoke Park is also notable for its many appearances on film over the years. Although the list is long, including the likes of Bridget Jones’ Diary and Layer Cake, it is bound to be Goldfinger which jumps to a golfer’s mind. Sean Connery’s James Bond tangled with Auric Goldfinger on Stoke Park’s 18th hole to produce the most memorable game of golf in cinema history. As well as being a challenging and demanding course you will find it hard not to be stirred by the exquisite views and landscapes of the championship course. These views are not surprising when one learns that Colt designed the course to work with the existing landscape, designed by Humphry Repton
and Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the 18th century. The club’s 27 hole course is made up of the three independent nine hole courses, Colt, Alison and Lane Jackson, and is one of only a few courses in Europe to do this. Colt’s ethos was that golf should be played with the mind and nowhere is this more true than at Stoke Park. He once said that “First holes should be long and easy” and here you will find a 524 yard Par 5 opening hole that is followed by 2 testing holes to get you into your round. Colt always made the most of natural surroundings when working on a course, using contours and slopes to create undulating fairways and defend his greens. These putting surfaces are often large, subtle and rolling, and this is certainly the case on the long Par 4 4th hole. Bunkers were very important to Colt, placed subtly around his designs. His liking for cross bunkers is on glorious show at the risk reward

Par 5 5th and Par 4 6th. Colt’s signature hole is the 7th, an awe-inspiring Par 3 often described as his single finest hole and the inspiration for the 16th hole at Augusta National which was designed by Dr Alistair Mackenzie, Colt’s good friend. A truly magnificent short hole, with a green that requires the utmost skill and precaution, par is always a good score. The 9th presents you with a great view of the stunning Georgian mansion which forms the clubhouse and another testing par 4, followed by a choice of refreshments at halfway. The Alison nine begins with two short holes the Par 4 10th hole and the Par 3 11th equalling the beauty of our signature hole, and both protected by water. Colt’s cross bunkering is again apparent on the long Par 4 12th and Par 5 13th, the latter offering a good birdie chance. The 14th once again brings you back to the mansion, setting a spectacular backdrop to your second shot. The final 4 holes allow for plenty of views of the wonderful building, none being closer than the 15th tee playing adjacent to the east side of the house and plagued with bunkers once more. The short Par 4 16th offers a respite before two great finishing holes in
the 17th and 18th. The 17th, a par 4, plays as a slight dog leg, with precision and accuracy needed from the tee to leave a second shot that plays over water. The 18th provides a great end to the round. A solid drive to the brow of the hill is required to give a clear view of the green. With the James Wyatt designed mansion once again in full view, a second shot to the heart of the green will leave one last breaking putt. Having completed your round, your day is complete with a small libation on the Orangery Lawn, reminiscing over your game, whilst taking in the breath taking views of the memorial gardens. If your hunger for golf is still not sated, then the Lane Jackson course beckons... It is a testament to Colt’s genius that his courses are admired by golfers at every level of the game. They still provide a genuine test and stand up to the challenges brought on by today’s modern equipment. Colt has without doubt left his legacy at Stoke Park. The course is further enhanced by the practice facilities, a 300 yard driving range, 2 dedicated short game areas, a putting green and indoor swing studio.

Situated at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, the course presents a demanding test for the lower handicap but is not so daunting that the higher handicap cannot score well and enjoy the game with prudent use of the shots they receive. Water hazards are a distinctive feature of the course and there is plenty of variety in the character of the holes.

Woburn Golf Club The Duke’s, The Duchess’ and Marquess’ Courses. Experience unrivalled golfing with a choice of three championship courses, over 54 outstanding holes. Woburn is the ideal venue for a quality golf day.
The Duke’s Course Having tested many famous names in golf it is still the course most people associate with Woburn. The Duke’s Course was the scene of the British Masters for twenty years as well as other top professional events.
The Duchess’ Course The Duchess’ Course is Woburn’s hidden gem and a fine example of a course built for the thinking golfer. The natural characteristics of each hole provide a testing challenge and demand a number of different strategies.
Designed by Charles Lawrie in 1974, when the late 14th Duke of Bedford decided to bring golf to the Woburn Estate, the 6,983 yard Duke’s course sports fairways lined with pine, silver birch and chestnut trees. Heather, bracken and gorse add to the charm of the course as well as providing some of the natural hazards of each hole. The famous third hole, framed by rhododendron bushes, has recently been voted into the ‘World’s Top 500 Holes’ by Golf Magazine.
Slightly shorter in length than the Duke’s Course, at 6,651 yards, the Duchess’ Course is cut from more formal pine forest. Its rolling fairways and subtle contours are deceptively landscaped to test the golfer’s full repertoire of shots. “Of the three Woburn courses, the Duchess’ is the one that puts a premium on that most elusive of golf talents: the ability to hit the ball consistently straight.” - Alistair Tait.

Dorset Introduction
Photos courtesy VisitBritain
Dorset Dorset is a county of outstanding natural beauty, with rolling hills, craggy coastlines and soft sandy beaches. It is famous for its picturesque coastline, which stretches from Lyme Regis in the west to Christchurch in the east, including the popular holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth. Dorset’s coastline was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2001 for its unique geological history and landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland and the shingle bank of Chesil Beach to name but a few. Dorset’s strong links with the sea mean water sports of all kinds are very popular. The waters off of Weymouth and Portland in particular are generally regarded as the best in Europe for sailing, which is why this area has been chosen to hold all the sailing events when London hosts the Olympic Games in 2012. For those of you who prefer your activity
and adventure to be on dry land, there’s also walking, horse riding, fishing, golf, tennis, llama trekking, zorbing and much, much more. Although Dorchester is the county town of Dorset, the nightlife tends to centre around Bournemouth, Poole and, to a lesser extent, Weymouth. The Bournemouth International Centre is a leading venue for music concerts, plays, stand-up comedies, conferences and exhibitions. Theatres in the region include the Pavilion and Pier in Bournemouth, the Pavilion in Weymouth, the Regent Centre in Christchurch and the Tivoli in Wimborne. With over 30 golf courses to choose from, Dorset is certainly a golfer’s paradise and the ideal location for a golf holiday. From nationally renowned to pay and play courses, there are plenty of venues to suit the novice or the expert.

Set in the glorious Dorset countryside, Broadstone is one of the finest examples of an unspoilt heathland golf course in the South of England, and deservedly sits in the Top 100 Golf courses in the UK. Within 250 acres of rolling terrain, the fairways run freely and separately through superb natural heathland with its swathes of heather, pine, gorse and rhododendrons, and several holes offer magnificent views for miles around. Visitors are always welcome to play at Broadstone. The course is host to numerous Societies and Organisations througout the year
and can cater for groups of any size - from two people out to enjoy this fine course while on holiday, right up to a Corporate Day where the course can be yours for the whole day. Signature Hole Hole 7, Par 4, 422 Yards (White Tee) A strong Par 4. Tee shot should be at the marker pole to allow for the right to left contour of the fairway. Long hitters will get home in two, but if you are unsure, play to the second valley to leave yourself a pitch up to the green. A four here is always a good score.

Before your game visit the warm-up area at the side of the Clubhouse. To the rear exit out towards the 1st tee is the putting green and practice nets.
Signature Holes Bulbury Woods Golf Course is a challenging, enjoyable and unforgettable experience. There are a number of dog-leg holes to negotiate, while the signature hole is the par-5 9th; from the tee visitors should take a moment to admire the stunning views of the Purbeck Hills and Poole Harbour. The 14th, a 338 yard par 4 is yet another challenging hole! After overcoming the dogleg you are faced with a short iron to the green with a pond strategically placed immediately behind.

Situated close to the county town of Dorchester and also close to the busy coastal resort of Weymouth, Came Down Golf Club offers the ideal location for both the regular local player and the visiting golfer. For golf in Dorset, there’s nowhere better. The current layout was designed by HS Colt of Muirfield, Royal Lytham, Pine Valley, St Andrews, Wentworth and Sunningdale fame. The course is a mature layout of 6,255 yards, par 70 for men. Based on freedraining chalk down-land the course rarely closes and offers year round golf all with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Signature Hole Hole 16, Par 4, 404 Yards (White Tee) The tee provides one of the best views on course. It overlooks Weymouth and Portland. Named Slingers in reference to Thomas Hardy’s name for Portland ‘The Isle of Slingers’, due to the fact that Portlanders used to throw stones to keep Kimberlins (strangers) away. Out of bounds down the right hand side and grass bunkers on the left. The green is also bordered with out of bounds and has a well placed bunker guarding the front right hand side of the green.

Designed by renowned golf architect Donald Steele in 1992, the open and undulating Valley Course, is set across 6,412 yards with neatly placed bunkers and water hazards. Each hole is unique, offering a demanding, challenging and idyllic course.
The 18th hole presents one final challenge. The more ambitious can take the short route and risk flirting with the dense woodland that runs along the left of the fairway. The more cautious can play wide and face a longer second into the well-protected green.
The River Crane meanders around the par 3 6th and par 4 11th. The short sixth is one of the most picturesque in the area and requires an accurate approach shot to the green.
The views from our modern clubhouse are second to none with a vista across the course, lake and Dorset countryside beyond. Informal and friendly, the bar and restaurant are the social hub of the club and the perfect place to mix and mingle, to catch up with old friends as well as make new ones, not to mention swap stories of the hole in one that nearly was!
The 15th green and 16th tee provide panoramic views of the course and surrounding Dorset countryside.

Hampshire Introduction
Hampshire As a tourist destination, Hampshire has so much to offer: a diversity of landscapes, stunning coastline, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty including the magnificent New Forest; superb walking and cycling territory, the Hamble Valley with its unspoilt countryside and ‘olde worlde’ villages; the vibrant and historic cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester… and all this within easy reach of London by road or rail! Portsmouth is a large city with several different identities. The older parts are the Historic Waterfront where you can still find the sea defences that have protected Portsmouth for centuries. Southsea makes up the south of the city and is the focus for family seaside holidays and fun fairs. For more historical attractions there’s the Royal Naval Dockyard which although still in operation also has the Historic Dockyard Attractions on the premises.
Between the Historic Dockyard and Waterfront is Portsmouth’s most modern addition, Gunwharf Quays and the iconic Spinnaker Tower. This is the place for shopping, eating and drinking and of course climbing up the tower for unprecedented views of the city and beyond. Southampton or ‘The City of Kings’ lies on the South East Coast of Britain, at the Northern most point of Southampton Water. A population of over 230,000 makes Southampton the biggest city in Hampshire. Southampton has strong links all over the globe, with its trade, cultural and social exchanges positive aspects for this thriving city. With it’s coastal location, Hampshire offers pleanty of opportunities to sample some excellent links golf, and is complemented by some fantastic inland courses to interest, excite and amaze any golfing fanatic.

ARMY
Army Golf Club is easy to find - if you drop in by parachute! Otherwise go to the website, print a map and arrive via Laffans Road. There’s a good reason (which we won’t go into) why entering GU11 2HF into a GPS guide will only get you close. Try a bit of good old map reading to be certain.
Facilities Golf: 18 County Class Golf Holes
For historic reasons our name is “Army Golf Club”. Yet don’t let the title confuse you. By far the majority of those playing today are not on Her Majesty’s Service. In fact, since the 1960’s the Club has been run as a normal Members’ club and welcomes applications to join from every section of the community. Some five years ago the Members bought the freehold of all 160 beautiful acres from the Ministry of Defence and this security of tenure has allowed a long term vision for the next 129 years of its history to be embarked upon. Since then £250,000 has been invested in carefully positioning 86 of the very latest
Toro DT55 precision sprinklers to water all 19 Greens with another 38 to cover the aprons. Delivering true putting surfaces where a good putt holes out and a poor one misses. Our dedicated Green Keeping team has a combined service of over 101 years at Army Golf Club; which means that the course is maintained to the highest quality during Summer and a programme of continual improvement is implemented throughout the year; such as working on a 25 year woodland management plan to reveal the majesty of specimen trees planted in years gone by to frame fairways and create amphitheatres behind Greens.

Bramshaw Golf Club is in an easily accessible location, just 1 minute from Junction 1 of the M27 on the B3079 at Brook. It is served by an excellent road, rail, air (and even sea!) network, being just over an hour from London and within easy commuting reach of Bournemouth, Salisbury, Southampton, Winchester and Portsmouth.
The original course, the Forest, is the oldest in Hampshire. It was built privately on New Forest heathland in about 1865 and became our course when the Club was formed in 1880.
emerging from the trees or a mare and her foal on the fairway gives the Forest Course a special and unique appeal.
The ever-changing scenery of humps, hollows and meandering streams test golfing skills and judgement within an idyllic New Forest setting. Its open aspects and rolling heathland are in complete contrast to the Manor Course.
The Manor Course was opened in 1970. Set amidst the beautiful New Forest in landscaped parkland of mature trees and 200 year old hardwood plantations, it is widely acknowledged to be amongst the finest and testing courses in the South of England.
The roaming ponies and deer add to the charm of the Forest Course, and many prefer to play it for its beauty and old-fashioned test of golfing skills. The prospect of a deer

Facilities
Built in 1993 the golf course was designed by the legendary Peter Allis to be a test of golf that caters for every standard of golfer. Due to the unique location of the course on the coast, we have excellent drainage meaning the course remains in superb condition all year round and we are the envy of local courses. The 18 hole, Creek Course complimented with the 9 hole Park Course means that you can play the course set up in 3 different ways which provides a great variety of golf. Offering breathtaking views across the marina and Portsmouth harbour the Creek Course is a
stern test where many a golfer has remarked that you can never play the course the same way twice. Being in such close proximity to the sea, the wind can and usually does play a determining factor in your round. The Park Course is a full length 9 holes, measuring 3202 yards and was built in the grounds of the old hall, a lovely course that compliments the Creek course well. A tree lined course that features lush fairways and tricky greens and pin positions, this course is an excellent compliment to the Creek as well as being a great course to just play 9 in the summer evenings.
In addition to the fantastic golf course we have an excellent range of amenities including, practice facilities, golf tuition from our Head Professional Sam Pleshette, Buggies and Trolleys available for hire, a fully equipped professional shop, the bar and restaurant and our two Function Rooms, the Avocet and the Harbour Rooms, ideal for Private Functions, Weddings, and Conferences.

the front nine tests your long game and courage, while the back nine requires careful planning and a strong will.” Neal Grist – Meon Valley PGA Professional 2012. The 9-hole Valley Course can be played as an 18-hole course at 5,758 yards and a par 70. The fairways are a bit wider than the Meon Course. I never tire of playing it and I’m sure that golfers of all standards will feel the same.” John Stirling – PGA Captain 1989.

NORTH HANTS
84
North Hants Golf Club Home since 1957 of the famous Hampshire Hog and a recent Open qualifying venue, North Hants is one of Hampshire’s outstanding courses with a reputation of having some of the finest and fastest greens in the South of England. Located less than 5 minutes from the M3 on the Surrey / Hampshire border, it is a true heathland gem where visitors always receive a warm welcome.
As anyone reading this guide will know, the South East of England has an abundance of wonderful and historic golf clubs, so any visitor to the area is spoilt for choice when considering which courses to try and play. So why should you consider North Hants as an appropriate destination for a day out golfing with friends? Well, firstly you can be assured that as a course it stands up to the most rigorous comparison with some of it’s perhaps more famous neighbours in Surrey and Hampshire. A James Braid layout that was improved by the legendary Harry Colt in 1913, the course is a superb example of a mature heathland layout with a delightful mix of heather and tall trees bordering each impressively manicured fairway. An Open qualifying course and constant Golf World Top 100 UK course, North Hants is home to one of the biggest Amateur Tournaments
in the game – The Hampshire Hog – an event won in the past by Sandy Lyle, Michael Bonallack and Justin Rose, amongst many others. Justin learned his golf here as a junior and still returns to play with his many friends. Measuring 6,600 yards from the back tees, North Hants is a true test of every club in the bag with a reputation of some of the finest and truest greens in the Country now enhanced by fairways benefitting from a recently installed irrigation system. Just to get the heart racing, the course starts with a devilishly difficult 200 yard par three to a well bunkered green, a hole even the club’s star players are mostly happy to take a bogey on. A sweeping dog leg second hole from a raised tee provides another tricky par but this gives way to a much more comfortable

“The rest of the front nine is classic heathland golfing fare, firm fairways giving way to well protected and fast greens.” and, for the low handicapper at least, a reachable par 5 third. This is a new hole, one of three designed by Donald Steel in 2001, and includes a spectacular approach over a lake to a raised and well contoured green. The rest of the front nine is classic heathland golfing fare, firm fairways giving way to well protected and fast greens. The short 8th is a classic par 3 which, though only 130 yards, requires a precise shot over a steep bunker to a narrow two tier green. When the pin is on the bottom, this is a true challenge. A recently re-bunkered ninth hole brings you back towards the impressive clubhouse and one of the best halfway houses anywhere in the region. So take a breather and enjoy one of our locally sourced sausage or bacon rolls before heading back out onto the back nine. Now it gets tricky. Another challenging, long par 3 starts the back nine so even if you start your round at the 10th it hardly breaks you in gently. The uphill 11th requires an accurate drive to avoid a well placed bunker about 230 yards up the left and then needs a decent shot to assure you of a par. The 12th is stroke 1 – a long sweeping dog leg to a two tier green with bunkers either side that tests even the finest strikers.
The last 6 holes of the course are a delightfully varied mix; up and down, doglegs both ways, a great par 3 15th and a long, challenging par 5 17th that has a green reminiscent of the Road Hole at St Andrews. As you step onto the 18th tee and face the imposing clubhouse once more, you will be 420 yards away from our final green, so enjoy a fantastic finishing hole. Our signature holes are the 1st and 10th, two great par threes that start each half. The new 3rd which requires a long, accurate drive down the left side of a sloping fairway to give you a shot of the green in two over a large lake. So, apart from a great course, why else would you want to visit North Hants? A large, modern and welcoming clubhouse which serves good food certainly helps get your visit off to a good start. A good pros shop with top brands at reasonable prices, fine practice facilities, brand new nets next to the first tee, and a new in 2012 a new fleet of buggies, if you want them, at reasonable prices. Above all, a friendly, informal, nonstuffy environment that belies it’s108 years of existence, a great place in which to enjoy your day at one of the South East’s best clubs. We genuinely look forward to welcoming you.

Oxfordshire Introduction

Oxfordshire Few regions can boast Oxfordshire’s variety, beauty, heritage and luxury. Discover towns and villages surrounded by the greenest of Oxfordshire countryside. Here you can enjoy extra long walks and play on some of the finest golf courses. Head west to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, with scattered grey stone villages, nestling in secluded valleys. Blenheim Palace and Cotswold Wildlife Park are among the treats in store.
Tew and great houses like Broughton Castle and Chastleton House near Adelstrop transport you to another era. Head South where the River Thames dominates, and towns such as Abingdon, Wallingford, and Henley grew up along its banks. Visit Didcot Railway Centre, with Britain’s only 7ft gauge, and the replica GWR locomotive, Fire Fly.
Head east: the wooded Chiltern Hills, once a focus of industrial activity, now shelter quiet country pubs and flint houses, dating back hundreds of years.
The county town of Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous the world over for its University and place in history. With its mix of ancient and modern, there is plenty for both the tourist and resident to do.
Head north: the Ironstone Hills’ gently undulating landscape is ideal for walking, cycling and golf followed by a relaxing spa treatment. Thatched villages such as Great

Carswell are celebrating the launch of their new exciting course layout following the construction of two new greens and multiple new tee’s on the golf course, whilst four lakes and strategically placed bunkers add to the interest.
For many golfers the 19th hole is at times the most important hole on the course, and at Carswell the Mecca for hungry, thirsty Golfers never disappoints. Signature Hole: 8th, Par 3, 159 yards A pretty par three. This green is set in the trees at the top of a little hill. Any shot hit left will kick away and a bunker waits over the back for a shot that is too strong. The green is highest in the centre and slopes away on both sides. Not many putts are conceded. Pat yourself on the back for any three that you make here. Evening golfers can get to see a lot of wildlife in this part of course with deer being regular visitors.
Frilford Heath
94
Frilford Heath Frilford Heath is Oxfordshire’s finest golf club, and one of the best in the south of England. Its three 18 hole championship standard golf courses offer a range of delights. With almost a hundred years of golf design heritage, players can choose a classic or a modern challenge as they see fit.
Situated on over 500 acres of glorious undulating heathland, just south of Oxford city, Frilford Heath present the courses to the finest playing standards all year round. The club’s land is, in part, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a programme of heather regeneration has seen a revival of the indigenous heathland flora and fauna. The club has a thriving membership and welcomes visitors who come to enjoy warm hospitality, excellent catering and some of the best golf around.
Oxfordshire’s most prestigious golf club will achieve a number of exciting ‘firsts’ in 2012. Frilford Heath Golf Club is proud to be hosting some top level events in the golfing calendar and will be featuring on national television for the first time. Thanks to an extensive list of improvements at the club in recent years which has seen over £500,000 invested in the clubhouse and its three beautiful courses, Frilford has attracted the attention of the top golfing associations and societies.
England Golf has recently staged its English Golf Captain’s Final at the club for the first time. So impressed were the organisers and players that they have pledged to hold the English Amateur Championship at Frilford in August 2013. The club will also welcome the EWGA Brenda King Foursomes Tournament this September. In April Frilford had its debut appearance on Sky TV when the final qualifying school for the PGA Europro Tour was played out at the club. The cameras will be rolling again in July when the Buildbase Open comes to Frilford.

Frilford’s oldest and most prestigious course, the Red was laid out in 1908 by JH Taylor, the five times Open Champion. Taylor may be less well known as a course designer than his fellow member of the Great Triumvirate, James Braid, but his track record is impressive. He was among the first course designers to build substantial artifical features on a course, at Royal Mid-Surrey, and along with his design partner Fred Hawtree, he played an important role in the creation of Royal Birkdale, often voted Britain’s top course. The Red was later tweaked by long-time club professional JH Turner, but in essence, it remains Taylor’s course, one of only a small number still remaining designed by one of golf’s legendary figures. The Red was described by Bernard Darwin as ‘both good and difficult’, and it still lives up to this description. An authentic championship challenge at 6,912 yards, it offers a traditional heathland golfing
experience with pushed-up greens that run fast and true and fairways that demand accurate driving if golfers are to score well. The stretch between holes five and nine is especially strong, with four hefty two shot holes and a par three that many will vote the most memorable on the course. The tee shot must carry a pond, and the elevated green is further protected by out of bounds to the rear. Seven consecutive par fours to close the round are a testing finishing stretch matched by very few courses.
Frilford Heath
96
Blue Course Frilford’s most recent addition, the Blue course, was opened in 1994 to great acclaim. Oxfordshire architect Simon Gidman, whose training in the long-established firm of Hawtree makes him a design descendent of JH Taylor, Frilford’s first architect, took 169 acres of adjoining farmland, and sculpted a course every bit the equal of the older tracks. The new land had fewer natural features than that occupied by the Red and Green, but it still had the precious sandy soil that makes Frilford what Bernard Darwin called
‘a wonderful oasis in the sea of mud’. Gidman used this sandy soil to build sweeping features that give the course a more modern feel than Frilford’s others, with hollows, swales and depressions adding to the interest. The layout explores every feature of the site and the par fives and par threes in particular all face different directions and set different tests. There are birdies to be had, even though, at 6,728 yards, the course is a considerable challenge. Equally there are two par fives - and the 600 yard monster that is the seventeenth hole is prime among them - that, without pinpoint accuracy on drive and second shot, a par will be almost impossible. The Blue’s greens are more severely undulating than those of the Red or Green, and thus put a premium on putting. The bunkering too is bold and challenging. A different course it may be, but no-one who plays the Blue at Frilford will feel hard done by.

Green Course Good Things come in small packages. As well as making alterations to the Red course, JH Turner, Frilford’s first professional, added a new nine holes to the club’s portfolio before World War Two. Together with nine more, built after the war by the respected British architect CK Cotton - whose other credits include courses of the stature of Ganton in Yorkshire, and Pennard in Wales, both of which he redesigned - Turner’s holes form the Green course.

Short the Green may be by modern standards, at only 6,015 yards. But its par of 69 - the first hole is the only par five - makes playing to one’s handicap much harder than a golfer might expect. Four outstanding par threes include the picturesque second and sixth, and the seventeenth, which at 206 yards is the longest ‘short’ hole on any of the Frilford courses. The loop formed by holes five to thirteen is separate from the rest of the property and has a lively peaceful feel, with gorse and birch prominent. Several strong par fours make the homeward stretch tough, but the 298 yard closing hole offers the chance of a smile-inducing finish.
“The club has a thriving membership and welcomes visitors who come to enjoy warm hospitality, excellent catering and some of the best golf around.”
Heythrop Park
98
Heythrop Park Heythrop Park is one of the most historic Estates in England and in keeping with its status is now graced by a quintessential English golf course which meanders over ridges and through valleys and is studded with ancient woodland, lakes and streams.
The new 7,088-yard par 72 course is the handiwork of Tom Mackenzie, of the internationally-renowned golf course architects, Mackenzie & Ebert, who are currently working on four Open Championship venues, Turnberry, Royal St George’s, Royal Lytham & St Annes and Royal Troon, as well as other prestigious projects as far afield as the Portugal, Angola, Germany, the Czech Republic, Germany, Canada and the West Indies. Mackenzie and Ebert are renowned for their sympathetic treatment of the landscape and nowhere is that better illustrated than at Heythrop, where the course was seeded as recently as the summer of 2008, but which will soon look as if it has been in situ for years. “Working at Heythrop has been a dream come true for me,” said Mackenzie, during a recent site visit. “My two great loves are golf and the landscape so to have the opportunity to work on such an historic site has been incredible.”
“Of course, it hasn’t all been straightforward,” he added. “We were tasked by the planners to replant 90% of the original parkland layout, and to route the golf course round it, which was a formidable challenge. But, with the help of the parkland experts, English Heritage and other government bodies, we have succeeded and we’ve been delighted at the initial reception the course as received.” It would be inappropriate to talk of signature holes on such an overtly English design but there is no doubt several holes stand out, not the least of which are the 314-yard par-4 6th, where the green nestles beside a fishing pond, and the 528-yard par-5 14th, which sweeps leftwards around an ancient woodland to a green that sits close to an 18th century stone bridge. Its fine set of challenging par-3s is also memorable and the same can be said for the unique 596-yard par-5 closing hole which is as straight as a die and has the Hall as its impressive backdrop.

Every hole on the 9-hole Par 3 Course is a different length and favours the use of a full range of irons. It is ideal for the more experienced and newer golfers to hone their skills.

Kirtlington is something of a jewel amongst new golf clubs in the South East of England. Firstly, although it is located just a few miles out of Oxford, you can survey the landscape from the first tee and barely find a house on the horizon. Secondly, it has been designed on an inland links basis, so instead of narrow fairways enclosed by towering trees you get a relatively forgiving flat open expanse littered with deep, testing bunkers and pristine, undulating greens. One of the things that appeals most about Kirtlington is that it caters to all levels of golfer, from the absolute beginner to the seasoned pro. The par-70, 18-hole course

has matured magnificently since it opened in 1995,and is now one of the best examples of a parkland course in the county. Alongside the tranquillity of its setting, the course’s slick greens provide something of a feature and are all built to exacting USGA specifications. It also boasts no less than 102 bunkers, each providing its individual challenge. Kirtlington also offers “The Blenheim”, a 1,535 yard, nine-hole course – the ideal place for a beginning or novice to make the transition from the driving range to the fairways. All nine greens are built to the same standards as on the 18-hole course.

From M40 (Northbound): At junction 8, exit onto A40 toward Oxford/Cheltenham. Turn right onto Headington Roundabout. Take the 1st left onto Bayswater Rd. Go through 1 roundabout.Turn right onto B4027. Take the 1st left onto Horton Rd. Continue onto Woodpery Hill. Continue onto Straight Mile Rd. Turn right, arrive at golf club.
As our name suggests, woods play an important part in the topography of the course. Designed by Simon Gidman, the par 73 course is set in 170 undulating acres of what was once an extensive woodland. History tells us that some 480 years ago, no less a person than Henry VIII used to enjoy his sporting afternoons here, hunting deer and wild boar. Two loops of nine holes play in opposite directions around a 30 acre wood, which lies at the centre of the course. Testing natural hazards come courtesy of 13 lakes, some impressive ground vegetation and a richness of fine, mature trees, most of which are specimen oaks.
Great care has been taken to set out the 18 holes in such a way that each fairway and green has its own distinctive character and offers its own particular challenge. All the tees and greens meet USGA specifications and the irrigation system is fully computerised. The result is a course which, framed by an ancient and beautiful landscape, combines a feeling of maturity with the prospect of a rewarding round of golf. Signature Hole: 15th, Par 4, 373 yards The ideal tee shot is a draw to a fairway that is notoriously difficult to hold. Uphill second to probably the trickiest green on the course.

Wiltshire Introduction

Wiltshire
More than half of Wiltshire is occupied by the chalky Salisbury Plain and by the Marlborough Downs. Primarily an agricultural county, Wiltshire is rich and fertile with large areas for sheep grazing in the uplands and fertile valleys in the Lower Avon. Swindon is a leading industrial centre known for its locomotive works. Now known as Old Town, the original Swindon is a pleasing place to while away the hours. Wander through its quiet courtyards and alleyways, or enjoy a vibrant mix of traditional shops and inns alongside modern outlets and stylish cafes and bars Salisbury is the only city in Wiltshire and is home to some of the most historic landmarks in England. This is still a very lively city, with regular markets being staged in the city twice a week for more than 600 years.
For the visitor, all of Wiltshire is awash with historical sites, unique ruins and attractions to suit everyone. The distinctive silhouette of Stonehenge is known the world over, exuding a mystery that has enthralled successive generations. Protected as a world heritage site, it is arguably Britain’s greatest prehistoric monument - the substantial remains of a sequence of monuments erected between around 3050 and 1600 BC. Golf in Wiltshire offers courses that are a great challenge for all levels of players from the low handicappers to the fair weather players. Wiltshire is truly an enchanting area to play the game of golf. Blending into the environment it is often difficult to detect where the countryside ends and the golf courses begin with facilities contributing to and enhancing this ‘rural’ feel.

BATH
Bath Golf Club is ideally situated just a mile from the centre of the City. If leaving the City on the A36 towards Warminster, North Road rises to the right alongside The Bath Spa Hotel. Climb the hill and after approximately 600 yd the driveway to the golf club is on your left.
Bath Golf Club, established in 1880, has one of England’s finest and oldest inland courses. The 18 hole, 6505 yard, par 71 course may not be the length that today’s course designers favour, but in the 1880s they knew how to create a challenge using the natural contours of a hilltop location. The course is full of variety and is laid out over fine “golfing country”. Springy downland turf over shallow soil and limestone ensures rapid draining and the course is usually found to be in superb condition. Facilities include a club house, restaurant and bar; well stocked pro shop with trolley hire; driving range, practice green & bunker; locker
rooms, changing and shower facilities. The club also caters for conferences, business meetings, seminars, award dinners, weddings etc. There is always a comfortable atmosphere in which to unwind after the game courtesy of our friendly and efficient staff. Also, most of the social events staged at the club are well attended and a real joy. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4, 305 Yards The out of bounds wall on the right is 25 yards from the centre of the fairway. The two tier green has a large slope in the middle and care must be taken to judge your approach precisely.

The extensive golf and leisure facilities at Broome Manor are managed by Swindon Borough Council and include the best practice facilities to be found in Wiltshire.
In addition, there is a great 9 hole, par 33 course, (Yellow: 2690, Red: 2378) without water hazards, ideal for those who do not have the time for 18 holes.
The well-designed championship-standard par-71 18-hole course is set in parkland with views of the wonderful Wiltshire countryside. It features water hazards and provides a challenge for all standards of golfer.
Broome Manor Golf Complex also has one of the best floodlit driving ranges in the area, with 26 covered, floodlit bays, and 7 open air bays. All have high quality mats, golf balls and are carpeted. The range is ideal for improving your game, with a number of different targets to keep your session interesting, including spin greens for short game practice and a large synthetic green in the Centre for iron practice. Club hire is available if needed.
Off the white tees, the superb parkland 18 hole course offers a challenging round of golf, especially down the final stretch with its tough six finishing holes.

To master the course you need to have an even mix of distance and accuracy, ball control is a must as trying to overpower this course will only lead to disapointment on your behalf.
The course is the perfect mix of forest, downland and intriguing water hazards, most of which are the result of the river Balackwater meandering its way through the course giving it its very own natural qualities. The peacefull

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol
Costa del Sol Spain
The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.
In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.
The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
