Welcome to the South Central Golf Guide Welcome to the second edition of the South Central Golf Guide, a magazine designed to help local and national golfers select and find the course they wish to play in the South central area of England.
The magazine is split into 6 areas. Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. These areas are colour coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found.
It gives each golf club the chance to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who wish to visit.
A full golf course listing is also featured in the magazine, containing the telephone number & website of every golf course in the South Central area.
The South Central Golf Guide is brought to you by Golf Guide Publications using a formula that has proved a huge success on the Costa del Sol for many years and is proving to have similar success since it’s introduction to the UK. In addition to The South Central Golf Guide here, there are the existing publications in the North West & Cumbria, Ireland and Yorkshire & The North East with plans to extend to further regions in the UK in the next few years. This 5 time yearly magazine features local and international news items, with specialist editorial on a select number of courses each month. Including useful information and directions to the course, these editorials are the chance for each club to highlight themselves and detail any offers and deals they have running during that period.
In addition to The Golf Guide itself, we are going to be running ‘The South Central Golf Guide Tour’. More details will be available in our next issue of ‘The South Central Golf Guide’. The competitions will offer the winning pair from each event a four day trip to Spain which covers flights, accommodation & 3 rounds of golf on top quality Spanish golf courses, together with other golf prizes on the day. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels, professionals, club players, beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing venues in the South central area for 2012. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels in November.

“The areas surrounding and abounding the course are SSSI (Special Site of Scientific Interest) and abound with wildlife.”
The Course Everything up till now has been a bonus, but the golf course is why you are really here. The Course was redesigned in 1920 by the legendary course designer Harry Colt and he laid out quite a challenge! As mentioned earlier the course is set in 250 acres of countryside and as is his want, Colt lulls you into a false sense of security with a gentle opening par 5. Following the first you are encouraged to make your score in the next 5 holes as after this is where the course really starts to challenge. The 7th is the signature hole on the front 9 and there has been many a discussion after the round by visitors and guests on how best to play this hole. The secret to it is, if in doubt about reaching, lay up! Play your second into the hollow about 100 – 120yds short this then leaves an uphill shot to the green – simple really! When you reach the green on the 9th hole you can see in the distance the 13th, this is the signature hole on the back 9 and beyond this in the distance you can see the Purbecks.
When you get to the 10th fill up at ‘The Oakley Arms’ it’s a natural spring that never runs dry and has the sweetest tasting water which will refresh you before the short hole at the 11th this hole will challenge your course management, don’t short side yourself on the green! There are four par3’s on the course and each one offers a different challenge as they are very individual in design, you will have played well if you can play the par 3’s in par. The back 9 where there are no par 5’s but some challenging and beautifully individual holes is a joy to behold and there have been many a golfer who reckon it features in their all time favourite stretch of holes. You will need to hole a few puts on the lovely greens which are smooth and fast in order to get those birdies. The golf course plays in a large loop and every hole on the course is set within its own space so calls of four are very rare, the predominant sound being birdsong.
Environment The areas surrounding and abounding the course are SSSI (Special Site of Scientific Interest) and abound with wildlife. Numerous birds, foxes, rabbits and deer can be seen. There are also some rare animals such as smooth snakes, grass snakes, sand lizards and the occasional adder, but you don’t need to worry as the latter tend to avoid golfers. The heather is tough but the beautiful purple haze is very relaxing. We even have some carnivorous plants in out of the way places called ‘sundew’, but do not worry they only like small insects! The Future The club are currently working with Frank Pont, a renowned golf course Architect who has a penchant for returning Harry Colt courses to their formal glory. The club are really excited about undertaking some of his ideas to further enhance both members and visitors enjoyment.

Bearwood Lakes Golf Club GEO Certified™
Recognised as one of the finest inland courses to be built in Britain in the past twenty years, Bearwood Lakes has added another important accolade recently being awarded GEO Certified™, golf’s international ecolabel certifying comprehensive commitment and achievement around sustainability.
The 18-hole golf course in Berkshire meanders through a backdrop of mature pines, beech and cedar trees and three natural lakes that were originally part of Windsor Great Park and part of the hunting grounds of the Kings of England since the 11th century. The magnificent 19th century mansion of John Walter III, founder of The Times newspaper, can be seen across the lake on the 14th tee. The original design by Guy Hockley under the direction of Martin Hawtree retained much of the original landscape, using tree coverage and nature of the area as a unique backdrop to the course that rolls around the
Bearwood estate. This outlook has become even more deep-rooted at Bearwood Lakes. Managing Director, Carl Rutherford: “We have integrated sustainability into our decision-making from every-day items like irrigation and pest-control, to purchasing decisions in the clubhouse and on the course, and certainly around the renovation work undertaken recently. The natural lakes and forested terrain on historically significant land perhaps add to the responsibility we all feel, but environmental stewardship also helps set our course apart from others, and makes good business sense.”
Golf Course Manager, Daniel Lightfoot MG MSc added: “As part of a rolling 5-year Ecology and Landscape Management Plan we have been doing good sustainability work for years. The GEO On-Course programme gave us an easy way to record and report this work and the GEO Certified ecolabel is something we can confidently and proudly show to members, guests, neighboring community, and the wider golfing world. “I’ve been looking forward to getting this distinction for a long time. However, with the ink not long dry on the award, we are already focused ahead on new ideas we have,

including a new irrigation storage reservoir which we become another open water habitat to benefit diversity of local wildlife, and continuing to improve our fleet which now includes three new John Deere electric ride-on mowers that lower our fuel costs, emissions and the risk of hydraulic leaks. “A great golf experience should draw on nature in many ways. And whilst we no longer have the bears here from past centuries, deer can be regularly seen along with badgers, grass snakes, red kite, kingfishers, lapwings, tawny owls, the bird of prey hobby, and a variety of aquatic wildlife. With the tall trees and lakes it can feel like you’re in North America’s Pacific Northwest rather than a short drive outside the center of London.”

Jonathan Smith, GEO Chief Executive added: “Bearwood Lakes is a great story of a club that has been factoring sustainability into their operations for years and we’re delighted that the OnCourse programme and GEO Certified ecolabel have helped them tell this story more publicly. it’s our hope that their results will inspire more clubs. Congratulations on excellent work and strong leadership.” Jim Croxton, Chief Executive Officer of BIGGA shared his endorsement: “The achievement of Bearwood Lakes is an excellent example of leadership around the important subject of sustainability. BIGGA members are passionate about the environment they manage and we see a lot of value in participation in the GEO OnCourse programme as a great roadmap to
improved environmental stewardship. The GEO Certified™ label makes a strong statement to golfers, local communities, and the overall golf industry regarding dedication to continued sustainable golf course management and we commend Daniel Lightfoot and all his colleagues at Bearwood Lakes for their achievement.” Dino Minoli, GEO Sustainability Associate (GEOSA), and accredited independent Verifier: “The environmental performance of golf facilities is an important issue. Bearwood Lakes Golf Club’s GEO Certified™ ecolabel signifies commitment to environmental governance and positions the game of golf at the vanguard of sustainable sport and leisure. Demonstrating strong environmental aesthetics and effective ecological stewardship are an integral part of a challenging, rewarding and stimulating golf experience. This certification recognises the pro environmental values and actions of their excellent Course Manager, responsible Owner, pro-active Management and supportive Club Members. Waterloovile Ladies Win 2012 Hayling Trophy
Hayling Golf Club Junior Open
Wareham Golf Club Captain’s Day
Hayling Ladies’ Golf Club have organised the Hayling Trophy Competition for nine years, and after reaching the semi finals four times, Waterlooville Ladies have finally collected the silverware, beating Shanklin & Sandown on Thursday 21 June. With just two weeks to spare, both semi finals were cancelled because of the atrocious weather. The semi between Waterlooville and Hayling was soon replayed, but the match between Shanklin & Sandown and Blackmoor was played only four days before the final. Shanklin & Sandown deserve extra commiserations, not only for being runners up, but for getting stuck in the chaos resulting from the impact of the weather and the Isle of Wight Festival on the ferries, which meant a 4.5 hour delay in boarding their ferry.
There was a record-breaking entry for the 36hole Junior Open at Hayling Golf Club (pictured) in June. 72 juniors from as far afield as Le Moye in the Channel Islands (who brought a team of eight juniors!). The weather was what we’d all come to expect this June – wet and windy – but most coped very well with the challenging course and conditions. There were 44 birdies and an eagle just during the morning round, and there were very few No Returns.
On a glorious Sunday, 22nd July 2012, the Club Captain at Wareham Golf Club invited Natasha Jones, Founder of Leukemia Educating and Fundraising (LEAF) to join him for his Captain’s Day. Natasha took part in the Olympic Torch Relay earlier in the month, and brought along the torch which she ran with. Members of the Club were invited to have their photograph taken with Natasha and the torch for a donation to the charity.
Ryder Cup player Steve Richardson was on hand to award the Jack Smith Trophy to the overall day winner Jennifer Vincent (14 hcp) from Effingham for her net 72&66. Ryan Harmer (4 hcp) of Freshwater Bay achieved the best overall gross of 76 & 75. The Shufflebottom Shield for the best team was won by Oak Park. For the first time there was an 18-hole competition for those with handicaps over 18, and this was won by Hayling’s James Cowan (30 hcp).
As for the Captain’s Day competition, the morning competition was a Stableford off full handicap, and was won by Mr J Cowling with 40 points (after count back) with Mr D Mabbley a close second, also with 40 points. In third place was Mr P Allen with 39 points. The afternoon competition was a 3 person team competition, best 2 scores to count on each hole, and was won by Roger Jones, Eva Hordle and kevin York, with a combined 81 points. In second place was Joe Gough, Mike Martin and Helen Cloney, with a combined 79 points (after count back) and in third place were Rod Spinks, Jim Wyeth and Sue mason, also with 79 points. With the course in excellent condition, and a clear blue sky most of the day, the members of Wareham Golf Club thoroughly enjoyed the day.
The Hayling Trophy is a match play competition for handicaps 25-36. It is intended to give the handicaps valuable experience of match play, and the competition has grown from eight teams nine years ago to 20 today. It is a very popular competition, played in great spirit by all the teams. COURSE FEATURE
Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club
Overview Since Darren Lee, our Course Manager arrived at the Club 6 years ago, the course has undergone tremendous improvements and continues to evolve year on year. Excellent drainage, layout and condition make this a very special year round course. Together with the improvements of the clubhouse, Salisbury & South Wilts can offer the full package of a superb well presented course as well as comfortable dining with beautiful views. Course The course has undergone many changes since 1888, most notably when it became a 27 hole complex. The 9 hole Bibury course, is part of the original course and is a good test of golf for all and is ideally suited for beginners to improve their game.
The 18 hole Cathedral Course at 6485 yards for men and 5838 yards for ladies is a mix of tree lined fairways and downland with great views over Salisbury and the Cathedral.
There is a good practice area, which allows for some excellent tuition from our head Pro Jon Waring as well as our ex European Tour Pro Andy Beal and Richard Pullen.
Always beautifully presented with excellent greens that run true it is maintained in the same condition throughout the year.
Over the last few years many plaudits have been received from members and visitors alike with one member from Parkstone Golf Club stating that “I, as a member of the visiting team, had never played your course before, and I now regard that omission as a ‘black mark’ in my golfing CV. I was very impressed; the layout, the quality of the greens and fairways, all added up to a superb experience”
With two long par 4’s to start your round, straight into the prevailing wind it is never easy and can be a card wrecker before you get into your groove. The final hole is a par 3, stroke index 16 and at only 163 yards should be easy, but with the clubhouse looming large behind the green it is intimidating, causing it to be rated the 9th most difficult hole for men and the 3rd most difficult hole for ladies and as such it can be a severe test to get your par.
Clubhouse Money has been well spent with the current Board overseeing the redevelopment of the clubhouse over the last 18 months. The

members’ club room has been fully refurbished with new carpets, curtains, comfortable furniture as well as a new bar. A balcony was added in June last year allowing an outside seating and dining area, directly overlooking the 18th green, which is a massive boost for spectator enjoyment for competitions and societies. The Pembroke Suite, our function room, has also been fully refurbished with new carpets and curtains and can cater for functions for up to 200 people. It is a lovely location for the brides and grooms to hold their receptions. To complete the renovation a new dining room has been added on the first floor, which leads out onto the balcony. This allows up to 40 members to dine in comfort and be able to admire the views over the course.
With the next project already in the pipeline, which is the complete renovation of the changing and locker room facilities, that will complete the transformation from just another golf club to something very special which has to be a “must visit” on everyone’s golfing agenda. Events Salisbury & South Wilts have hosted many regional competitions and county matches and recently hosted the WPGA One Day Series. The annual charity Pro Am attracts a full field of 46 teams each year and with opens for Seniors, Ladies, Senior Ladies and Juniors there is a good opportunity for visitors to participate. Although the Salisbury Scratch open has been hosted in the past, this is the first year of the
Salisbury City Scratch Open, a new competition which is a 36 hole event, with 18 holes at South Wilts and 18 holes at High Post Golf Club to the north of Salisbury. With next year seeing the 125th anniversary of the club it is anticipated that some more events will take place to celebrate the achievement of 125 years and allow more players to sample this superb club.

Came Down Golf Club Came Down’s origins starts with a private club situated at Broadway Farm locally known as ‘Lorton Links’. When play there was terminated in 1895, negotiations began with the landowner Lord Portarlington for 180 acres on Came Down.
Successful talks led to Tom Dunn of Bournemouth laying out the original 9 hole course of 3,620 yards complete with small pavilion. The ‘Dorchester Golf Club’ opened for play on the 2nd of March 1896. With golf in Bournemouth proving such a successful attraction, Weymouth Town Council enlisted former Open Champion J.H. Taylor as their golf course architect in 1904, with a view to setting up a first-class 18 hole course. Taylor took the view that there was no land suitable for golf south of the Ridgeway and recommended the expansion of the Dorchester Club’s course to 18 holes. The proposal was carried out and the course extended to 18 holes over 6,090 yards. In addition, a new clubhouse was constructed at the northern end of the course and the Great Western Railway were persuaded to build a ‘halt’ at Monkton to provide golfers with easier access to the course just a mile away. The new course opened under the revised name of the ‘Weymouth, Dorchester and County Golf Club on the 15th May 1906. During 1910 the club appointed Ernest Whitcombe to be the club Professional. Later
his mother Bessie was appointed as the stewardess and brought her other two sons, Charles and Reg. The family stayed for 17 years and did much to put the club on the map. During the 1920’s the brothers got to know Samuel Ryder, a country member who played at Came Down when on holiday in Weymouth. During 1923 and 1924 the club was thriving, helped by the fame and popularity of the Whitcombe brothers. A resolution was passed to liquidate the original company known as ‘Weymouth Dorchester and County Golf Club Company’ and alter the name to ‘Came Down Golf Club’. It was also agreed to raise money for improvement to the course and clubhouse. It was not until 1927 however that the work started. Harry Shapland Colt was employed to undertake a major course reconstruction. Mr Colt was himself a fine player but even more famous world-wide as a golf course architect responsible for such courses as Sunningdale, Wentworth, Royal Portrush and the redesign of Broadstone. Came Down Golf Club, located in Thomas Hardy country just south of Dorchester, Dorset’s county town, offers a spectacular golfing challenge suitable for all skill levels.
The Club was founded in 1896, and boasts an excellent golfing experience, suitable for all skill levels. The course sits on chalk downland and offers stunning 360 degree views to locations such as Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester, Isle of Wight, Maiden Castle and more. The Golf Swing in 10 words Stack and Tilt is a system of measuring and analyzing golf swings in order to understand which factors a golfer needs to prioritise in order to enable improvement. While the swing can be infinitely complex and the world’s best players must pay attention to the details, it also needs to be described in a way that is simple enough for the beginner golfer to understand. Ten words are all you need to start working on your swing. All good players exhibit these traits to some degree and they are primary differentiators between the best and beginner golfers. Work on any of these ten words to begin your journey towards high and powerful draws. Weight Forward (Picture 1) The weight should continuously shift forwards during the course of the swing. This enables you to make contact with the golf ball before the ground and assists in making your path in to out. It is a very important move to
promote hitting the ball with a draw. Shoulder Down (Picture 2) Moving your shoulder down during the backswing enables you to keep your head steady. This allows the hands and arms to orbit the body in concentric circles. Along with keeping the weight forward this is a key move to allow you to make good contact. Hands In (Picture 3) The golf club is designed to be swung on an arc around the body. For this to happen the hands must move inwards rather than straight back, depth rather than width. This keeps the club approaching the ball from the inside and is a key move for power as the golfer generates angular momentum. Arms Straight (Picture 4) Maintaining the arms straight helps preserve the radius of the stroke making

contact more consistent. Having straight arms in the follow through also promotes hitting out to the ball rather than across it, which often results in a slice. Tuck Hips (Picture 5) The hips move forwards and upwards as you hit the ball. This allows the body to keep turning and helps to keep shifting the weight sufficiently to the left side during the time and space of the swing. Think of this as raising the belt. Remember, weight location the most forwards and handle location the most forwards equal the biggest draws. Luke Donald Welcomed by new owner of Bearwood Lakes It was an extraordinary 72 hours in the short but illustrious history at Bearwood Lakes Golf Club. The Oxfordshire Grand Final Venue for The Four Nations Golf Challenge Although there were several very attractive proposals to take the 2012 Grand Final of The Four Nations Golf Challenge to a new venue, the success of last year’s Grand Final at The Oxfordshire really made the decision a ‘no brainer’ and will be staying at what feels like ’home’!
About The Oxfordshire World renowned golf course architect Rees Jones has successfully blended 18 strategically contoured holes into the surrounding countryside at The Oxfordshire near Thame. A relative rarity in Britain, the course has been designed in a modern American parkland style, and specifically as a potential venue for international golf tournaments. Since opening in 1993, The Oxfordshire has hosted the Andersen Consulting World Matchplay, the Ladies English Open, and from 1996 to 1999 it was the venue for the Benson & Hedges International Open. The latter boasts an enviable list of winners including Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer and Darren Clarke. All the holes present their own individual challenges, not least the 17th, which is the course’s signature hole and was voted one of the top 500 holes in the world by Golf Magazine in January 2000. This downhill par five is the thinking golfer’s dream and the thoughtless golfer’s nightmare. After the drive, a solid tee shot will invite a
second shot over the water to a small landing area protected by pot bunkers. The safer route plays around the lake but requires a longer shot partially over water. The big hitter may try for the green in two shots, but beware, a full water carry is required to the green, which is also protected by sand. Another notable hole is the 8th, also voted one of the top 500 holes in the world by Golf Magazine in January 2000. Although a short par four, the 8th requires both finesse and accuracy, with water on the right and bunkers at the turn, tempting the conservative player to hit an iron from the tee. This is not a hole to be played without a plan.
the effects of wind will be equalized during the course of any given round, a reflection on both the influence of wind on the game and the importance of the philosophy of fairness (being able to recover from an errant shot). The layout of The Oxfordshire flows naturally with the beautifully contoured land and was created to preserve the existing trees. This provides an environment where the player will be able to see, understand and appreciate the design at work. For more details visit www.theoxfordshire.com
The Philosophy behind the course The inspiration for the design for The Oxfordshire Golf Club came from Mother Nature herself: the lay of the land is superb. Rees Jones wanted to combine the best of the British courses with the best of the American, with the result being variety, challenge, drama and fairness.
About The Four Nations Golf Challenge The Championship enables you to play with your golfing partner and enter as a ‘Pair’. You and your partner will try to qualify to represent your chosen Nation (England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales), and join five other pairs in a team of twelve which will compete in The Grand Final against the teams from the other three Home Nations. The 2012 FNGC Grand Final will take place from 23rd to 26th September.
Across the course, each par three and each par five plays in a different direction, ensuring

Once reason of excessive head and body movement in the putting stroke is the temptation to look up through impact, often from being too keen to know whether the ball is going in the hole or not! This is certainly a noticeable difference between the putting strokes of pros and amateurs. Notice in the picture just after impact how I have resisted the temptation to look up, and kept my eyes down where the ball was. As a result my body has remained in its original posture position, keeping my shoulders, and therefore clubface square to the target line. Try this and you will notice how keeping your head and body as still as possible during the stroke can really improve your putting.

Berkshire Introduction
Photos courtesy VisitBritain
Berkshire Berkshire lies in the south east of England and stretches 60 miles west from London to the Wiltshire border.
Windsor Castle lies in Berkshire and in 1974 the county has been recognised by HM Queen as the Royal County of Berkshire.
Lots of tourist attractions here to keep any visitor happy, with river walks and trips, countryside to explore, and we have travel guides to the main towns and cities in the county as well as some of the villages.
In 1998 the county was divided into six districts: West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, Windsor and Maidenhead and Slough. However, the non-metropolitan county was not abolished and it is the only county in England to have multiple districts but no county council.
The Thames runs along the northern boundary of Berkshire and this area, together with the parts of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire that border the river, is known as the Thames Valley. Ideal for those long walks along the Thames.. An ancient county, Berkshire dates back to the time when King Alfred set the County Boundaries and takes its name from the large forest of birch trees that once grew there.
Berkshire also hosts the popular Legoland theme park, always a favourite with young visitors. With some of the finest inland courses in the country, such as Sunningdale (host to several famous golf tournaments), The Berkshire, and Bearwood Lakes amongst many others, Berkshire is a golfing oasis not to be missed.

The Bearwood estate was, until relatively recently, part of Windsor Great Park the hunting grounds of the Kings of England since the 11th century. Whilst bears and wild boar have long departed, deer can be regularly seen drinking from the lakes through the early morning mists. Recognised as one of the finest inland courses to be built in Britain in the past twenty years, Bearwood Lakes is eminently playable all year round with many exciting challenges from a good selection of well positioned tees. The golf course meanders through a backdrop of mature pines, beach and
cedar trees that provide the perfect backdrop to this stunning piece of land. The emphasis at Bearwood Lakes is private, peaceful and above all inspiring. Our stunning layout was designed by Martin Hawtree, who’s family golf architects practice was founded in 1912. The course rolls around the Bearwood estate and it is well worth pausing for a few seconds to take in the natural beauty of this wonderful setting. Bearwood Lakes is a private golf club for members and invited guests. Please call or email us for the very latest information.

been preserved and enhanced, using modern greenkeeping methods and machinery. A forestry and heathland conservation programme is in place, and the club’s policy is to ensure the longterm future of its outstanding asset. The sandy heathland has excellent drainage properties, resulting in fine year-round golfing conditions. There are no weak holes, but one of the most memorable is the last, which requires an accurate drive over a mountain of heather to a hidden landing point. Ball found, the second is to an elevated green in front of the Clubhouse where distance judgement is paramount so as not to upset the Members enjoying a post-round drink!
Sunningdale

Sunningdale Golf Club Sunningdale is blessed with two championship courses laid out on the most glorious piece of heathland winding their way through heather, gorse and pine, each one of which has its own individual charm.
Major Championships have been staged in every decade of Sunningdale’s history and its Champions include James Braid, Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Max Faulkner, Bobby Locke, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Bob Charles, Gary Player, Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer. Old Course Sunningdale Old Course was designed by Willie Park Junior and opened in 1900. It was laid out in the last days of the gutty ball, over a mixture of hills, heath and woodland that had hitherto not been considered as suitable for golf course construction. Urns containing fourteen iron-age skeletons were excavated during its construction. The course was considered extremely long and its popularity owed much to the development of the Haskell ball, initially imported from the United States.
Willie Park’s design was considered revolutionary at the time, and within a few years Harry Colt, the Club Secretary, had modified several holes and drastically altered others. Bernard Darwin in “Golf Courses of the British Isles”, 1910 believed that several of the holes had been greatly improved by the Colt changes. The Old Course is considered one of the best inland courses in the UK and is regularly found in various “100 top courses” rating lists. Many amateur and professional golfing events have been played here including the News of the World Professional Match Play Championship, numerous European Open Championships, many Ladies Open Championships, the Walker Cup, and more recently the International Final Qualification for the Open Championship

New Course Sunningdale’s New Course was designed by Colt and Morrison in 1923, on heathland including small copses and broom. The first five holes were more or less as now, although the track of the first and eighteenth holes had to be reversed. Colts sixth hole played down the line of today’s ninth hole, though along its left hand ridge to a green over the path down to Valleys End and the Brickmaker’s Arms. Holes 7-10 were hilly and in today’s woods right of the tenth hole on the Old. The tenth hole was played from the hill above, onto today’s tenth green, and the last eight holes
were much the same as current, although the thirteenth was fifty yards longer, and other green locations have been altered. More land became available in 1934, allowing architect Tom Simpson to scrap the hilly holes and create a clockwise loop, with a 500 yard tenth onto a green on today’s eleventh fairway, and the course was renamed the Jubilee course. This was not popular with members and in 1939 Colt and Morrison were asked to reassess. They reversed the loop, using Simpson’s greens, and built new greens for the thirteenth and eighteenth holes. Their re-design has lasted.

Buckinghamshire Introduction
Buckinghamshire A small county, merely 27 miles across east to west at its widest point and 50 miles in length, Buckinghamshire is nevertheless full of charm and beauty. Its numerous rivers such as the Thames and the Great Ouse, river valleys and hills, the Chilterns and picturesque villages, make for a wonderful place to tour, particularly on foot. Aylesbury, the county town of Buckinghamshire, is a lively market town steeped in history. Located at the foot of the Chiltern Hills and at the heart of the rich agricultural Vale of Aylesbury. The town was a focal point in the English Civil War in the 17th century. The ancient town of Buckingham dates back to the 7th century and contains some fine Georgian buildings as well as the imposing town hall and the distinctive Old Gaol, now a centre for Buckinghamshire Tourist Information.
Nearby is Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit and Stowe Landscape Gardens, one of the finest Georgian landscape gardens in Britain. The county is awash with wonderful golf courses, some of which you may have heard of before, others not so well known but still worth the trip. That’s the kind of opportunity that awaits would-be visitors to Buckinghamshirethe chance to explore and see something new.
“Its numerous rivers and picturesque villages make for a wonderful place to tour.”

Ellesborough
Ellesborough Golf Club is situated between Aylesbury and High Wycombe. If approaching from High Wycombe take the route through Princes Risborough. The optimum route from Aylesbury is through Wendover.
Ellesborough lies in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, with stunning views over the Oxford plain. Once part of the Chequers estate, with a long and illustrious history stretching back over more than 100 years, Ellesborough has enjoyed the patronage of Prime Ministers and statesmen such as Harold Wilson and Bill Clinton. The greens are a strong feature of the course and have long held a reputation as some of the finest and most challenging in the south east of England. The club regularly hosts the BB&O Open and in 2011 hosted the EWGA English Girls’
Championship. This superb inland links course is a test for golfers of all standards and the hospitality in the clubhouse will round off a wonderful day of golf. Signature Hole: Each hole has it’s own unique attributes, but among the most memorable is the 5th, a tough par 3 which is well protected by bunkers all round. Possessing one of the hardest greens on the course, with a difficult undulating putting surface and some very subtle borrows, you should be happy to walk off with a three. Greg Norman described it as ‘the longest 6 iron he has ever played’!

Set in over 200 acres of rolling Buckinghamshire countryside, the course was designed by Jonathan Gaunt, one of the UK’s leading golf architects. To many, it is known as the closest a parkland course can be to a Links due to its beautiful water features and sometimes windy conditions. Here at Magnolia Park Golf & Country Club we believe members and visitors alike should be able to experience the full benefits of our courses regardless of the season with the greens and tees open all year round. Played from the forward tees, the subtle undulating fairways will offer an exciting game for golfers of all abilities, whilst the
competition tees give the more experienced golfers a course with Championship potential. Magnolia Park is not a course to be taken lightly; if you’re playing well and taking full advantage of the conditions you can have a very enjoyable round. Peg it up thinking there’s a a low score to be had, this course will inevitably beat you. Signature Hole: 15th, Par 4, 446 Yards Aim for the left side taking the trouble out of play. The second into the green, 9 times out of 10, is always a club longer.
STOKE PARK
48
Stoke Park Stoke Park’s 27 hole Championship parkland golf course, known as Stoke Poges, is one of the finest of its kind in the world. Designed in 1908 by one of the greatest course architects of his generation, Harry Shapland Colt, Stoke Park became the UK’s first country club.
The course has received many accolades over the years, including ‘Golf Club of the Year’ and ‘Top 100 Courses you must play in the World’ by Golf World as well as a Gold placing in the HSBC Regional Course Rankings. Stoke Park is also notable for its many appearances on film over the years. Although the list is long, including the likes of Bridget Jones’ Diary and Layer Cake, it is bound to be Goldfinger which jumps to a golfer’s mind. Sean Connery’s James Bond tangled with Auric Goldfinger on Stoke Park’s 18th hole to produce the most memorable game of golf in cinema history. As well as being a challenging and demanding course you will find it hard not to be stirred by the exquisite views and landscapes of the championship course. These views are not surprising when one learns that Colt designed the course to work with the existing landscape, designed by Humphry Repton
and Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the 18th century. The club’s 27 hole course is made up of the three independent nine hole courses, Colt, Alison and Lane Jackson, and is one of only a few courses in Europe to do this. Colt’s ethos was that golf should be played with the mind and nowhere is this more true than at Stoke Park. He once said that “First holes should be long and easy” and here you will find a 524 yard Par 5 opening hole that is followed by 2 testing holes to get you into your round. Colt always made the most of natural surroundings when working on a course, using contours and slopes to create undulating fairways and defend his greens. These putting surfaces are often large, subtle and rolling, and this is certainly the case on the long Par 4 4th hole. Bunkers were very important to Colt, placed subtly around his designs. His liking for cross bunkers is on glorious show at the risk reward

Par 5 5th and Par 4 6th. Colt’s signature hole is the 7th, an awe-inspiring Par 3 often described as his single finest hole and the inspiration for the 16th hole at Augusta National which was designed by Dr Alistair Mackenzie, Colt’s good friend. A truly magnificent short hole, with a green that requires the utmost skill and precaution, par is always a good score. The 9th presents you with a great view of the stunning Georgian mansion which forms the clubhouse and another testing par 4, followed by a choice of refreshments at halfway. The Alison nine begins with two short holes the Par 4 10th hole and the Par 3 11th equalling the beauty of our signature hole, and both protected by water. Colt’s cross bunkering is again apparent on the long Par 4 12th and Par 5 13th, the latter offering a good birdie chance. The 14th once again brings you back to the mansion, setting a spectacular backdrop to your second shot. The final 4 holes allow for plenty of views of the wonderful building, none being closer than the 15th tee playing adjacent to the east side of the house and plagued with bunkers once more. The short Par 4 16th offers a respite before two great finishing holes in
the 17th and 18th. The 17th, a par 4, plays as a slight dog leg, with precision and accuracy needed from the tee to leave a second shot that plays over water. The 18th provides a great end to the round. A solid drive to the brow of the hill is required to give a clear view of the green. With the James Wyatt designed mansion once again in full view, a second shot to the heart of the green will leave one last breaking putt. Having completed your round, your day is complete with a small libation on the Orangery Lawn, reminiscing over your game, whilst taking in the breath taking views of the memorial gardens. If your hunger for golf is still not sated, then the Lane Jackson course beckons... It is a testament to Colt’s genius that his courses are admired by golfers at every level of the game. They still provide a genuine test and stand up to the challenges brought on by today’s modern equipment. Colt has without doubt left his legacy at Stoke Park. The course is further enhanced by the practice facilities, a 300 yard driving range, 2 dedicated short game areas, a putting green and indoor swing studio.

Woburn Golf Club The Duke’s, The Duchess’ and Marquess’ Courses. Experience unrivalled golfing with a choice of three championship courses, over 54 outstanding holes. Woburn is the ideal venue for a quality golf day.
The Duchess’ Course, Hole 17
The Duke’s Course Having tested many famous names in golf it is still the course most people associate with Woburn. The Duke’s Course was the scene of the British Masters for twenty years as well as other top professional events.
The Duchess’ Course The Duchess’ Course is Woburn’s hidden gem and a fine example of a course built for the thinking golfer. The natural characteristics of each hole provide a testing challenge and demand a number of different strategies.
Designed by Charles Lawrie in 1974, when the late 14th Duke of Bedford decided to bring golf to the Woburn Estate, the 6,983 yard Duke’s course sports fairways lined with pine, silver birch and chestnut trees. Heather, bracken and gorse add to the charm of the course as well as providing some of the natural hazards of each hole. The famous third hole, framed by rhododendron bushes, has recently been voted into the ‘World’s Top 500 Holes’ by Golf Magazine.
Slightly shorter in length than the Duke’s Course, at 6,651 yards, the Duchess’ Course is cut from more formal pine forest. Its rolling fairways and subtle contours are deceptively landscaped to test the golfer’s full repertoire of shots. “Of the three Woburn courses, the Duchess’ is the one that puts a premium on that most elusive of golf talents: the ability to hit the ball consistently straight.” - Alistair Tait.

South Central Golf Guide
Dorset Introduction
Photos courtesy VisitBritain
Dorset Dorset is a county of outstanding natural beauty, with rolling hills, craggy coastlines and soft sandy beaches. It is famous for its picturesque coastline, which stretches from Lyme Regis in the west to Christchurch in the east, including the popular holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth. Dorset’s coastline was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2001 for its unique geological history and landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland and the shingle bank of Chesil Beach to name but a few. Dorset’s strong links with the sea mean water sports of all kinds are very popular. The waters off of Weymouth and Portland in particular are generally regarded as the best in Europe for sailing, which is why this area has been chosen to hold all the sailing events when London hosts the Olympic Games in 2012. For those of you who prefer your activity
and adventure to be on dry land, there’s also walking, horse riding, fishing, golf, tennis, llama trekking, zorbing and much, much more. Although Dorchester is the county town of Dorset, the nightlife tends to centre around Bournemouth, Poole and, to a lesser extent, Weymouth. The Bournemouth International Centre is a leading venue for music concerts, plays, stand-up comedies, conferences and exhibitions. Theatres in the region include the Pavilion and Pier in Bournemouth, the Pavilion in Weymouth, the Regent Centre in Christchurch and the Tivoli in Wimborne. With over 30 golf courses to choose from, Dorset is certainly a golfer’s paradise and the ideal location for a golf holiday. From nationally renowned to pay and play courses, there are plenty of venues to suit the novice or the expert.

Set in the glorious Dorset countryside, Broadstone is one of the finest examples of an unspoilt heathland golf course in the South of England, and deservedly sits in the Top 100 Golf courses in the UK. Within 250 acres of rolling terrain, the fairways run freely and separately through superb natural heathland with its swathes of heather, pine, gorse and rhododendrons, and several holes offer magnificent views for miles around. Visitors are always welcome to play at Broadstone. The course is host to numerous Societies and Organisations througout the year
and can cater for groups of any size - from two people out to enjoy this fine course while on holiday, right up to a Corporate Day where the course can be yours for the whole day. Signature Hole Hole 7, Par 4, 422 Yards (White Tee) A strong Par 4. Tee shot should be at the marker pole to allow for the right to left contour of the fairway. Long hitters will get home in two, but if you are unsure, play to the second valley to leave yourself a pitch up to the green. A four here is always a good score.

Based on freedraining chalk down-land the course rarely closes and offers year round golf all with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

It has been the venue for many prestigious events, including the PGA Europro Tour as seen on Sky Sports and the BMW PGA Order of Merit Championship as well as the EGU McGregor Tournament. The course is set in 160 acres of beautiful Dorset countryside rolling gently down to the River Stour. The course is open all year round. We have an automated irrigation system to all tees, greens and fairways to ensure top condition. Our state-of-the-art 10-bay undercover driving
range was completed in July 2007 and was officially opened by BBC sports commentator Peter Alliss. We also boast one of the busiest and best stocked golf shops in the South and have extensive practice facilities. Streams meander gently through the course under Purbeck stone bridges linking the nine lakes with the river. The greens have been constructed to USGA specification and are sand based, well drained and receptive. They are protected by large bunkers and water hazards. point, consequently each pose a different challenge depending on the wind direction. Indeed the fifth tee possesses one of the finest views in British Golf, situated as it is, on a Bronze Age bell barrow over 3000 years old. The views take in Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island, Studland Village and the Isle of Wight. The course is situated on one of the larger expanses of varied heathland within Dorset and contains a variety of habitants. Ninety percent of the course is within a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and a special area of conservation (SAC).
Parkstone
62
Parkstone Golf Club “There is no better place”. Those were the words of Reg Whitcombe, Professional at Parkstone Golf Club and Open Champion of 1938 as he thanked members and local dignitaries at a dinner held to celebrate his Open success.
Today’s golf course is set in only 160 acres but on a most unique piece of land so close to Poole Harbour. Gary Peddie, General Manager at the Club describes Parkstone as “almost ‘Surrey Heathland’ in its design and presentation with rolling fescue fairways framed by heathland and mature pines.” The course was designed by Willie Park Junior (Open Champion of 1887 and 1889 from Musselburgh in Scotland) in 1909 and later extended and remodelled in 1935 by James Braid who was by then the professional at Walton Heath. It is great testament to Braid that over 70 years later his design continues to challenge and excite members and visitors alike. The course is now recognised as one of the most attractive and enjoyable heathland
courses in the country. The holes are set into gently undulating land with many of the greens or tees raised which always adds to the fun and challenge of the game. The course is not long, ranging from 5,550 yards for the ladies to 6,300 yards from the men’s medal tees. However, only a fool would underestimate the course as the fairways are fairly tight and a wayward shot can leave you with the challenge of recovering from the heather and gorse which lay in abundance. Each hole has its own character and is acknowledged by Donald Steel, the renowned course Architect, as a masterpiece that entices golfers. The emphasis today is on maintaining the true heathland character of the course; firm fast running surfaces of the highest quality.

Steve Richardson joined the Club as Course Manager, from Sunningdale, in 2011. He immediately saw the potential to transform this beautiful canvas into the finished article. The Dorset County Championship was played at the Club this year and competitors waxed lyrical about the playing conditions. If you are serious about the game, then you would not want to miss out on this meandering delight. The Club itself is simply steeped in history. Not many Golf Clubs can boast an Open Champion as their Professional. However, it does not stop there; Peter Alliss was the Professional at Parkstone for 13 years during the time that he was at the peak of his golfing career. The Club has also had a number of outstanding amateur golfers including Maureen Garrett
and Jean Bisgood, both of whom represented GB&I in the Curtis Cup. In more recent years the Club has produced many Dorset County players and indeed County Champions. Wrapped in history and tradition, Parkstone Golf Club is a friendly and most welcoming Golf Club, with the emphasis on a high level of customer service. Gary Peddie continues; “our objective is to match Reg Whitcombe’s words and to do that we have to meet the modern golfer’s expectations, an excellent course both in design and presentation, a level of quality service in every department of the Club whether that relates to a glass of chilled Chablis on our fabulous terrace or a custom fit session with Head Professional Martyn Thompson at our ‘Centre of Excellence’ on the range. Golfers will simply want to return.

South Central Golf Guide
Hampshire Introduction
Hampshire As a tourist destination, Hampshire has so much to offer: a diversity of landscapes, stunning coastline, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty including the magnificent New Forest; superb walking and cycling territory, the Hamble Valley with its unspoilt countryside and ‘olde worlde’ villages; the vibrant and historic cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester… and all this within easy reach of London by road or rail! Portsmouth is a large city with several different identities. The older parts are the Historic Waterfront where you can still find the sea defences that have protected Portsmouth for centuries. Southsea makes up the south of the city and is the focus for family seaside holidays and fun fairs. For more historical attractions there’s the Royal Naval Dockyard which although still in operation also has the Historic Dockyard Attractions on the premises.
Between the Historic Dockyard and Waterfront is Portsmouth’s most modern addition, Gunwharf Quays and the iconic Spinnaker Tower. This is the place for shopping, eating and drinking and of course climbing up the tower for unprecedented views of the city and beyond. Southampton or ‘The City of Kings’ lies on the South East Coast of Britain, at the Northern most point of Southampton Water. A population of over 230,000 makes Southampton the biggest city in Hampshire. Southampton has strong links all over the globe, with its trade, cultural and social exchanges positive aspects for this thriving city. With it’s coastal location, Hampshire offers pleanty of opportunities to sample some excellent links golf, and is complemented by some fantastic inland courses to interest, excite and amaze any golfing fanatic.

01. How to Find
Basingstoke
From the M3: Exit at junction 7 and take the A30 towards Basingstoke. The entrance to the Club is approximately 1 mile from the M3 on the right hand side (sign posted) soon after the road narrows to single carriageway. There is a right hand filter lane for the turning. Mott’s Motorcycles is next door as a reference. If you happen to miss the turn, proceed through the next set of traffic lights up to the roundabout and head back towards the M3. The entrance is then approximately 400 yards from the roundabout on the left hand side.
Basingstoke moved to its present location in 1928 and was officially opened on March 29th by the legendary six time Open champion, Harry Vardon and the famous course designer James Braid. The club is a regular host to a number of County amateur and professional events including all the major County Championships. The course is set in 110 acres of Deer Park and features many mature native British trees. The 6289 yard, par 70, course is synonymous of a ‘Braid’ parkland design, with rolling, undulating tree lined fairways,
excellent bunkering and subtly contoured greens. In the summer months, the greens are regarded as some of the finest in Hampshire Signature Hole Hole 18, Par 5, 491 Yards The second par 5 to finish the round. Avoid all the bunkers and a birdie opportunity awaits. Longer hitters will need to feed their drive right of the bunkers, shorter will not reach. The green awaits the big hitter in two but the entranceway is very narrow. Shorter hitters will lay up by the next set of bunkers to leave a pitch into the green.

Being in such close proximity to the sea, the wind can and usually does play a determining factor in your round. The Park Course is a full length 9 holes, measuring 3202 yards and was built in the grounds of the old hall, a lovely course that compliments the Creek course well. Oxfordshire Introduction

Oxfordshire Few regions can boast Oxfordshire’s variety, beauty, heritage and luxury. Discover towns and villages surrounded by the greenest of Oxfordshire countryside. Here you can enjoy extra long walks and play on some of the finest golf courses. Head west to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, with scattered grey stone villages, nestling in secluded valleys. Blenheim Palace and Cotswold Wildlife Park are among the treats in store.
Tew and great houses like Broughton Castle and Chastleton House near Adelstrop transport you to another era. Head South where the River Thames dominates, and towns such as Abingdon, Wallingford, and Henley grew up along its banks. Visit Didcot Railway Centre, with Britain’s only 7ft gauge, and the replica GWR locomotive, Fire Fly.
Head east: the wooded Chiltern Hills, once a focus of industrial activity, now shelter quiet country pubs and flint houses, dating back hundreds of years.
The county town of Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous the world over for its University and place in history. With its mix of ancient and modern, there is plenty for both the tourist and resident to do.
Head north: the Ironstone Hills’ gently undulating landscape is ideal for walking, cycling and golf followed by a relaxing spa treatment. Thatched villages such as Great

Carswell are celebrating the launch of their new exciting course layout following the construction of two new greens and multiple new tee’s on the golf course, whilst four lakes and strategically placed bunkers add to the interest.
For many golfers the 19th hole is at times the most important hole on the course, and at Carswell the Mecca for hungry, thirsty Golfers never disappoints. Signature Hole: 8th, Par 3, 159 yards A pretty par three. This green is set in the trees at the top of a little hill. Any shot hit left will kick away and a bunker waits over the back for a shot that is too strong. The green is highest in the centre and slopes away on both sides. Not many putts are conceded. Pat yourself on the back for any three that you make here. Evening golfers can get to see a lot of wildlife in this part of course with deer being regular visitors.
Frilford Heath

Frilford Heath Frilford Heath is Oxfordshire’s finest golf club, and one of the best in the south of England. Its three 18 hole championship standard golf courses offer a range of delights. With almost a hundred years of golf design heritage, players can choose a classic or a modern challenge as they see fit.
Situated on over 500 acres of glorious undulating heathland, just south of Oxford city, Frilford Heath present the courses to the finest playing standards all year round. The club’s land is, in part, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a programme of heather regeneration has seen a revival of the indigenous heathland flora and fauna. The club has a thriving membership and welcomes visitors who come to enjoy warm hospitality, excellent catering and some of the best golf around.
Oxfordshire’s most prestigious golf club will achieve a number of exciting ‘firsts’ in 2012. Frilford Heath Golf Club is proud to be hosting some top level events in the golfing calendar and will be featuring on national television for the first time. Thanks to an extensive list of improvements at the club in recent years which has seen over £500,000 invested in the clubhouse and its three beautiful courses, Frilford has attracted the attention of the top golfing associations and societies.
England Golf has recently staged its English Golf Captain’s Final at the club for the first time. So impressed were the organisers and players that they have pledged to hold the English Amateur Championship at Frilford in August 2013. The club will also welcome the EWGA Brenda King Foursomes Tournament this September. In April Frilford had its debut appearance on Sky TV when the final qualifying school for the PGA Europro Tour was played out at the club. The cameras will be rolling again in July when the Buildbase Open comes to Frilford.

Frilford’s oldest and most prestigious course, the Red was laid out in 1908 by JH Taylor, the five times Open Champion. Taylor may be less well known as a course designer than his fellow member of the Great Triumvirate, James Braid, but his track record is impressive. He was among the first course designers to build substantial artifical features on a course, at Royal Mid-Surrey, and along with his design partner Fred Hawtree, he played an important role in the creation of Royal Birkdale, often voted Britain’s top course. The Red was later tweaked by long-time club professional JH Turner, but in essence, it remains Taylor’s course, one of only a small number still remaining designed by one of golf’s legendary figures. The Red was described by Bernard Darwin as ‘both good and difficult’, and it still lives up to this description. An authentic championship challenge at 6,912 yards, it offers a traditional heathland golfing
experience with pushed-up greens that run fast and true and fairways that demand accurate driving if golfers are to score well. The stretch between holes five and nine is especially strong, with four hefty two shot holes and a par three that many will vote the most memorable on the course. The tee shot must carry a pond, and the elevated green is further protected by out of bounds to the rear. Seven consecutive par fours to close the round are a testing finishing stretch matched by very few courses.
Frilford Heath
88
Blue Course Frilford’s most recent addition, the Blue course, was opened in 1994 to great acclaim. Oxfordshire architect Simon Gidman, whose training in the long-established firm of Hawtree makes him a design descendent of JH Taylor, Frilford’s first architect, took 169 acres of adjoining farmland, and sculpted a course every bit the equal of the older tracks. The new land had fewer natural features than that occupied by the Red and Green, but it still had the precious sandy soil that makes Frilford what Bernard Darwin called
‘a wonderful oasis in the sea of mud’. Gidman used this sandy soil to build sweeping features that give the course a more modern feel than Frilford’s others, with hollows, swales and depressions adding to the interest. The layout explores every feature of the site and the par fives and par threes in particular all face different directions and set different tests. There are birdies to be had, even though, at 6,728 yards, the course is a considerable challenge. Equally there are two par fives - and the 600 yard monster that is the seventeenth hole is prime among them - that, without pinpoint accuracy on drive and second shot, a par will be almost impossible. The Blue’s greens are more severely undulating than those of the Red or Green, and thus put a premium on putting. The bunkering too is bold and challenging. A different course it may be, but no-one who plays the Blue at Frilford will feel hard done by.

Green Course Good Things come in small packages. As well as making alterations to the Red course, JH Turner, Frilford’s first professional, added a new nine holes to the club’s portfolio before World War Two. Together with nine more, built after the war by the respected British architect CK Cotton - whose other credits include courses of the stature of Ganton in Yorkshire, and Pennard in Wales, both of which he redesigned - Turner’s holes form the Green course.

Short the Green may be by modern standards, at only 6,015 yards. But its par of 69 - the first hole is the only par five - makes playing to one’s handicap much harder than a golfer might expect. Four outstanding par threes include the picturesque second and sixth, and the seventeenth, which at 206 yards is the longest ‘short’ hole on any of the Frilford courses. The loop formed by holes five to thirteen is separate from the rest of the property and has a lively peaceful feel, with gorse and birch prominent. Several strong par fours make the homeward stretch tough, but the 298 yard closing hole offers the chance of a smile-inducing finish.

it is testing yet fair to all standards of golfer. Fairways and greens encourage golfers to employ their ‘Course Management’ skills. Kirtlington is something of a jewel amongst new golf clubs in the South East of England. Firstly, although it is located just a few miles out of Oxford, you can survey the landscape from the first tee and barely find a house on the horizon. Secondly, it has been designed on an inland links basis, so instead of narrow fairways enclosed by towering trees you get a relatively forgiving flat open expanse littered with deep, testing bunkers and pristine, undulating greens. One of the things that appeals most about Kirtlington is that it caters to all levels of golfer, from the absolute beginner to the seasoned pro. The par-70, 18-hole course

has matured magnificently since it opened in 1995,and is now one of the best examples of a parkland course in the county. Alongside the tranquillity of its setting, the course’s slick greens provide something of a feature and are all built to exacting USGA specifications. It also boasts no less than 102 bunkers, each providing its individual challenge. Kirtlington also offers “The Blenheim”, a 1,535 yard, nine-hole course – the ideal place for a beginning or novice to make the transition from the driving range to the fairways. All nine greens are built to the same standards as on the 18-hole course.

As our name suggests, woods play an important part in the topography of the course. Designed by Simon Gidman, the par 73 course is set in 170 undulating acres of what was once an extensive woodland. History tells us that some 480 years ago, no less a person than Henry VIII used to enjoy his sporting afternoons here, hunting deer and wild boar. Two loops of nine holes play in opposite directions around a 30 acre wood, which lies at the centre of the course. Testing natural hazards come courtesy of 13 lakes, some impressive ground vegetation and a richness of fine, mature trees, most of which are specimen oaks.
Great care has been taken to set out the 18 holes in such a way that each fairway and green has its own distinctive character and offers its own particular challenge. All the tees and greens meet USGA specifications and the irrigation system is fully computerised. The result is a course which, framed by an ancient and beautiful landscape, combines a feeling of maturity with the prospect of a rewarding round of golf. Signature Hole: 15th, Par 4, 373 yards The ideal tee shot is a draw to a fairway that is notoriously difficult to hold. Uphill second to probably the trickiest green on the course.

Wiltshire Introduction

Wiltshire
More than half of Wiltshire is occupied by the chalky Salisbury Plain and by the Marlborough Downs. Primarily an agricultural county, Wiltshire is rich and fertile with large areas for sheep grazing in the uplands and fertile valleys in the Lower Avon. Swindon is a leading industrial centre known for its locomotive works. Now known as Old Town, the original Swindon is a pleasing place to while away the hours. Wander through its quiet courtyards and alleyways, or enjoy a vibrant mix of traditional shops and inns alongside modern outlets and stylish cafes and bars Salisbury is the only city in Wiltshire and is home to some of the most historic landmarks in England. This is still a very lively city, with regular markets being staged in the city twice a week for more than 600 years.
For the visitor, all of Wiltshire is awash with historical sites, unique ruins and attractions to suit everyone. The distinctive silhouette of Stonehenge is known the world over, exuding a mystery that has enthralled successive generations. Protected as a world heritage site, it is arguably Britain’s greatest prehistoric monument - the substantial remains of a sequence of monuments erected between around 3050 and 1600 BC. Golf in Wiltshire offers courses that are a great challenge for all levels of players from the low handicappers to the fair weather players. Wiltshire is truly an enchanting area to play the game of golf. Blending into the environment it is often difficult to detect where the countryside ends and the golf courses begin with facilities contributing to and enhancing this ‘rural’ feel.

BATH
Bath Golf Club is ideally situated just a mile from the centre of the City. If leaving the City on the A36 towards Warminster, North Road rises to the right alongside The Bath Spa Hotel. Climb the hill and after approximately 600 yd the driveway to the golf club is on your left.
Bath Golf Club, established in 1880, has one of England’s finest and oldest inland courses. The 18 hole, 6505 yard, par 71 course may not be the length that today’s course designers favour, but in the 1880s they knew how to create a challenge using the natural contours of a hilltop location. The course is full of variety and is laid out over fine “golfing country”. Springy downland turf over shallow soil and limestone ensures rapid draining and the course is usually found to be in superb condition. Facilities include a club house, restaurant and bar; well stocked pro shop with trolley hire; driving range, practice green & bunker; locker
rooms, changing and shower facilities. The club also caters for conferences, business meetings, seminars, award dinners, weddings etc. There is always a comfortable atmosphere in which to unwind after the game courtesy of our friendly and efficient staff. Also, most of the social events staged at the club are well attended and a real joy. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4, 305 Yards The out of bounds wall on the right is 25 yards from the centre of the fairway. The two tier green has a large slope in the middle and care must be taken to judge your approach precisely.

Welcome to Cumberwell Park. Wiltshire’s only 36 hole golf course, where our clubhouse is the starting points for all four 9 hole courses. Within this elegant, tranquil setting you will find a venue that provides the ideal location for an enjoyable golfing experience. Since opening in 1994 Cumberwell Park is now established as one of the best courses in the South West and has been awarded four stars in Golf World’s Top Courses in Britain. The Club is also an accredited Golf Mark and Club Mark facility, and our team of dedicated green staff take tremendous pride in their work.
The 36 hole course designed by Adrian Stiff provides different challenges for golfers of every ability. The course encompasses a wonderful blend of rolling countryside, lakes, streams, natural copse and woodland. The natural contours of the landscape have shaped the design of the course, which covers 400 acres. The beauty and interest of the course is further enhanced by nine lakes, thirty-four acres of woodland and free flowing streams. All greens have been constructed and maintained to the highest specification, and the tees are built with a sandbased root zone mix.

RUSHMORE
From Salisbury: Leave Salisbury on the A354 heading towards Blandford Forum. After about 11 miles you reach a large roundabout. Take the 3rd exit onto the B3081 towards Sixpenny Handley. Pass through Sixpenny Handley village heading towards Tollard Royal. The golf club entrance is about a mile further on the right hand side. The drive takes you through the Rushmore Park. When the road divides, take the right hand fork (signed Golf Club). You will cross a cattle grid into the golf course, the clubhouse is ahead, with the car park behind it.
Set within one of the most stunning landscape settings of Southern England, high on the chalk of the Cranborne Chase in Wiltshire, Rushmore Golf Club provides year-round golf on free-draining turf. It combines the best of both worlds; a thoroughly modern golf course set in beautiful, ancient parkland which is now forging a reputation as one of the best golf courses in the region. The course begins in the designated parkland of the old deer park before you cross the ‘Shire Rack’ into Dorset, with incredible views towards the south coast & as far as the Isle of Wight. A haven for wildlife, you will see ducks
& moorhens near the ponds & if you get a little closer, frogs, toads & newts. Away from the waters’ edge, the course provides a habitat for butterflies, birds & small mammals. Other visitors include the deer that roam free in the surrounding woods & on a sunny day you might even see the macaws that sometimes fly over from the neighbouring Larmer Tree Gardens. The Rushmore Restaurant, Spikes Bar & TV Lounge are open to all. The clubhouse has stunning views over the historic parkland & golf course, with a restaurant that seats up to 80 people & with further seating on a fabulous decking, when the weather is fine.

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol
Costa del Sol Spain
The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.
In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.
The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
