Welcome to the South Central Golf Guide Welcome to the third edition of the South Central Golf Guide, a magazine designed to help local and national golfers select and find the course they wish to play in the South central area of England.

The magazine is split into 6 areas. Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. These areas are colour coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found.

It gives each golf club the chance to showcase their course and facilities with superb photography and enough information to whet the appetite of any golfer or group of golfers who wish to visit.

A full golf course listing is also featured in the magazine, containing the telephone number & website of every golf course in the South Central area.

The South Central Golf Guide is brought to you by Golf Guide Publications using a formula that has proved a huge success on the Costa del Sol for many years and is proving to have similar success since it’s introduction to the UK. In addition to The South Central Golf Guide here, there are the existing publications in the North West & Cumbria, Ireland and Yorkshire & The North East with plans to extend to further regions in the UK in the next few years. This 5 time yearly magazine features local and international news items, with specialist editorial on a select number of courses each month. Including useful information and directions to the course, these editorials are the chance for each club to highlight themselves and detail any offers and deals they have running during that period.

In addition to The Golf Guide itself, we are going to have two Summer Open competitions, one at Caversham Heath Golf Club in Berkshire, and the other at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire. Details are available on pages 32 and 80 in this issue of ‘The South Central Golf Guide’. The competitions will offer great prizes on the day. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers of all levels, professionals, club players, beginners and societies. We hope that you will find this free publication an enjoyable read, and a must for choosing your golfing venues in the South central area for 2013. The next issue will be available from all golf clubs, select golf shops, driving ranges and hotels.

EUROPEAN TOUR

Paul McGinley Named European Captain for The 2014 Ryder Cup Paul McGinley has accepted an invitation from the Tournament Committee of The European Tour to become Captain of The European Team in The 2014 Ryder Cup at The Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire, Scotland from September 26 - 28, 2014. Born in Dublin, Ireland, on December 16, 1966, McGinley becomes the first Irishman to captain a Ryder Cup Team against the United States. He will be the 24th different golfer to lead the European (formerly Great Britain and Ireland) Team. McGinley, a four time winner on The European Tour, made three consecutive, and victorious, Ryder Cup appearances from 2002 – 2006 and will always be remembered as the man who holed the winning putt during his first appearance at the Belfry 11 years ago. McGinley’s captaincy credentials are there for all to see. Not only has he played a crucial vice-captaincy role in Europe’s last two Ryder Cup wins, he has also been Captain of two winning Great Britain and Ireland

Teams in the Vivendi Seve Trophy, defeating Continental Europe in both 2009 and 2011. At The Gleneagles Hotel, McGinley will look to continue Europe’s phenomenal recent record which shows them to have won seven of the last nine biennial contests with the USA. Since the change from a Great Britain and Ireland Team to that of Continental Europe in 1979, Europe have won nine and tied one of the 17 matches contested. Europe’s victories were achieved under the captaincies of Tony Jacklin (1985, 1987), Bernard Gallacher (1995), Seve Ballesteros (1997), Sam Torrance (2002), Bernhard Langer (2004), Ian Woosnam (2006), Colin Montgomerie (2010) and Olazábal (2012), while Jacklin presided over the halved match in 1989.

Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director, said: “We are delighted that Paul has accepted the invitation of the Tournament Committee to take up the role as Captain for 2014. Having played in three Ryder Cups and holed the winning putt at the Belfry in 2002, Paul has an innate understanding of every attribute required to be a successful Captain. “Paul’s meticulous nature and his passion for the strategic aspects of the Captain’s role have been evident for many years, through his role as a Ryder Cup Vice-Captain and as Captain of the Great Britain and Ireland Team in the Vivendi Seve Trophy. We already know that he will leave no stone unturned in his quest to retain The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September 2014.” For more info visit: www.europeantour.com

Rushmore Golf Club Course Managers Aspirations

Rushmore Golf Club, based in Tollard Royal on the Wiltshire/Dorset border has been through a period of change over the last 6 months. Three of their greenkeeping team, with over 70 years’ experience between them reached their retirement. Although sad to see them go, it has been an exciting time. The clubs General Manager, Declan Healy has been busy assembling a team that will see the club move forward over the coming years, with exciting times on the horizon. We will be following the progress of new Course Manager, Jaime Acton as he settles into life on the Rushmore Estate. I was very proud to have been offered the position and am very excited about the potential of the Golf Course and the responsibility I have been given to improve the Course and take it to the next level. It is such a fantastic site, steeped in history and incredibly beautiful.

I have been involved in Greenkeeping since I left school at the age of 16 and for me it’s the greatest profession in the world! I love working with nature and creating a golfing environment that people enjoy playing even if it means sometimes working in difficult circumstances such as unpredictable weathers. It is always a real buzz getting Golf Courses to peak when everything is against you. My aim for Rushmore is clear. I want to give the membership a Golf Course they can be truly proud of and provide a Course that visiting golfers can enjoy and appreciate. The course has been forging a

good reputation over the past few years and quite simply I want to build on that. My vision is to raise the already high standards and invoke a professional work ethic to aid and further improve the presentation of the Course. I plan to achieve this through implementing structures designed around attention to detail that will improve the quality of the playing surfaces and the aesthetics of the site as a whole. I am also very excited at the prospect of larger projects that the Estate are keen to implement over the next few years to further improve the course. It has already been lengthened by

over 200 yards during 2012 and some other very exciting projects are in the pipeline. The Golf Club has already gained a really good reputation since it’s opening in 1994 and in that relatively short period of time it has made great strides to improve its playability and performance by adding USGA specification greens which have helped the Club to create a year round golfing experience. My mission is to work hard to reduce the thatch levels in the greens and start to encourage and nurture some finer grasses to thrive thus creating a well paced firm and true putting surface. I envisage working with the soil, aerating and enriching by emolliating goodness as we go thus attempting to create a perfect habitat for fine grasses to flourish, and to create an environment for the already abundant wildlife, both around the course and the Estate as a whole.

It is my desire to improve the quality and the appearance of the rest of the Course and a series of mowing regimes will be created for the Aprons, Tees, Fairways and Semi Rough in an attempt to enhance these areas. We start our process with a complex Winter Project Work Programme which includes enhancing some of our pathways as well as some other general tidy up work designed to help create a positive first impression including the installation of a new Starters Hut on the 1st tee. The ancient trees that make up the majority of the Course will no doubt keep us busy for the time being with much leaf collection to be done between now and the New Year as well as basic aeration work in the form of slitting of the Aprons, Tees and Fairways. www.rushmoregolfclub.co.uk

Hayling member Tim Hung travels to China

Junior golf is thriving at Hayling Golf Club

Hayling ladies welcome four new junior girls

Twenty-one-year-old Hayling member Tim Hung is studying for a degree in Sports Management Golf at Bournemouth University, and as his third degree year is currently spending an internship in China, working at the world’s number one golf club – Mission Hills. Mission Hills boasts 22 golf courses as well as the world’s largest clubhouse, and in October hosted the World Celebrity ProAm, when Tim got to meet Darren Clarke, Chubby Chandler, footballer Renaldo and actor Andy Garcia, as well as looking after LPGA star Kathleen Ekey. He also volunteered at the UBS Hong Kong Open and served as a mobile scorer for Rory McIlroy. Tim has had the chance to see other big stars play their golf … Ian Poulter, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Matt Kuchar and Simon Dyson.

Hayling Golf Club has a thriving Junior section, soon to be even more thriving now that Ryder Cup star Steve Richardson has kindly agreed to take on the role of Junior Development Officer!

Lady Captain Angie McMillan was thrilled to learn that four young girls had joined the Junior Section at Hayling Golf Club recently, especially since it is the first time in many a year that we have had four Junior girl members at the same time. Three of them have fathers or brothers already playing at Hayling, but in one case it is her grandmother’s footsteps that Casey Jones is following. They all go out on the regular Saturday 6-hole Challenge organised by David & Gill Silver and Brian Osborne (where would any club be without its volunteers?), and two already have a Club Handicap, Hannah Hellyer and Anna Richardson. Angie invited all four to draw the raffle tickets at the ladies’ Christmas Lunch on 13 December, and they were a big hit with the ladies.

Tim is a 4-handicapper and he speaks Chinese. Being able to speak two languages gives him the opportunity to translate for and accompany local and foreign VIP visitors. Golf in Asia is growing by leaps and bounds, and Tim is gaining valuable experience of a golf environment that is constantly growing in popularity.

Twelve of our juniors, including girls, are now taking part in the County junior development events. Three of our boys are in the Under 10 squad … Max Clapp, Oscar Growns (the youngest Hayling junior ever to attain an official handicap) and James Hellyer – all three are pictured above – with eight more being selected for inclusion in the county/training programme for the Under 11s at Paultons Park. There are good times ahead for Hayling Juniors!

Angie is pictured above at the lunch, with L-R Casey Jones, Anna Richardson (Steve Richardson’s daughter), Hannah Hellyer and Millie Cowan.

Brokenhurst Manor New all weather short game area Those golfers who know Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club will know that the club is lucky in producing many good players at every level. Over the years Hampshire and England have fielded many players from Brokenhurst on the match team sheet.

You cannot put your finger on one aspect of the club that gives a good reason for why so many members have been fortunate to represent their County or Country. Currently, Jack Singh Brar is one such player who is touching the lime light and hopefully will go on to represent the club, county and country at senior level. Nevertheless, one aspect of any club is its practice facilities and good facilities must have some part in producing good golfers. Recently, and in line with producing a tangible project that would benefit all members of the club and make good use of funds collected by the Centenary Committee (the club celebrates it’s 100th birthday in 2015 and as well as a

selection of events throughout the year the club decided to spend some of the donations on an aspect of the clubs facilities which would be a lasting legacy) an all weather short game area was chosen to fulfill the need and pictures show the progress through the latter part of 2012. The weather this year has not been kind for building projects this year so there is still the laying of topsoil and turf to be done to complete the first phase. As you can see from the plan of the area we have yet to install the target greens and teeing area which will eventually allow an all year round practice facility. Who knows we may even flood light it and members can practice into the hours of darkness.

Stack & Tilt

®

Extend the Trail Leg for Power

Stack & Tilt® is a registered Trademark, owned by AM Golf Associates, LLC www.stackandtiltgolfswing.com

It is important for you to know that the knees change flex throughout the course of the golf swing. At setup, both knees are flexed in what is commonly referred to as a “dynamic and athletic” position. This is useful for stability and makes it possible to use the ground for leverage. As you go into your backswing the lead knee must incrementally begin to flex while the trail knee begins to straighten. Allowing your right leg to straighten allows the hips to turn, which increases your range of motion and makes it easier to achieve a full shoulder turn. It will also allow the hands to travel inward on an arc, which will enable the clubhead to accelerate for a longer period of time and generate more angular momentum. Be aware that the longer the club the more the knee flex needs to change. The golf swing operates like a catapult and not like a spring

As long as the right leg remains bent in its address flexion, the hips cannot turn fully. The golfer’s hands will consequently start to move upwards excessively. This leads to a lack of depth, an over the top motion and a loss of potential distance.

The right leg is straightening throughout the course of the backswing so that the hips and shoulders can turn. As a result the golfer is able to swing the hands on an inside arc for increased power.

To hit the ball the furthest, the trail leg needs to straighten the most. You can think of this as loading the catapult.

New golf tour for Dorset women beginners Almost 200 Dorset women who took part in beginners’ golf lessons last year are being offered the chance to go on tour. A series of nine-hole events at six golf clubs in the county is being organised for the women by the Dorset Golf Partnership, which works to grow the game. The Ladies’ Tour will start in March and will run fortnightly through the spring. It’s the brainchild of County Development Officer Dee Wood who wants to keep the interest and enthusiasm of newcomers who took group lessons, offered across the county, during 2012. The six lessons, which cost just £20, were sponsored by the Partnership as part of the nationwide campaign to encourage people to Get into golf.

“So many of the ladies have continued with their golf and are keen to get out on to a course. We plan a series of relaxed fun days, giving everyone the opportunity to meet and play with like-minded women,” said Dee. Among those who have already signed up is Sue Fisher, who took up the sport with a course of lessons at Crane Valley Golf Club with PGA professional Darrel Ranson. “The lessons turned into a really lovely social activity,” said Sue. “We were all in the same boat and Darrel was so, so patient and made it all very good fun.” Since then Sue, together with friends she made at the lessons, have moved on to an improvers’ course and to trying out their skills on Crane Valley’s nine-hole Woodland course. Now, they’re ready for the next challenge.

“The Ladies’ Tour appeals because we will all be at the same level, so it won’t be intimidating and it won’t matter if we make fools of ourselves! We’ll all want to have fun, do the best we can, but not take it too seriously,” said Sue. The Tour events will take place at: Dudsbury Golf Club’s academy course; Wessex Golf Centre; Sturminster Marshall Golf Club’s nine-hole course; Crane Valley Golf Club’s nine-hole Woodland course; Canford Magna Golf Club’s nine-hole Knighton course; Yeovil Golf Club’s nine-hole Newton course. Anyone seeking more information or who wants to sign up for the Tour should contact Dee Wood by email dee.wood1@ btinternet.com or phone 07711 978747

Berkshire Introduction

Photos courtesy VisitBritain

Berkshire Berkshire lies in the south east of England and stretches 60 miles west from London to the Wiltshire border.

Windsor Castle lies in Berkshire and in 1974 the county has been recognised by HM Queen as the Royal County of Berkshire.

Lots of tourist attractions here to keep any visitor happy, with river walks and trips, countryside to explore, and we have travel guides to the main towns and cities in the county as well as some of the villages.

In 1998 the county was divided into six districts: West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, Windsor and Maidenhead and Slough. However, the non-metropolitan county was not abolished and it is the only county in England to have multiple districts but no county council.

The Thames runs along the northern boundary of Berkshire and this area, together with the parts of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire that border the river, is known as the Thames Valley. Ideal for those long walks along the Thames.. An ancient county, Berkshire dates back to the time when King Alfred set the County Boundaries and takes its name from the large forest of birch trees that once grew there.

Berkshire also hosts the popular Legoland theme park, always a favourite with young visitors. With some of the finest inland courses in the country, such as Sunningdale (host to several famous golf tournaments), The Berkshire, and Bearwood Lakes amongst many others, Berkshire is a golfing oasis not to be missed.

The Bearwood estate was, until relatively recently, part of Windsor Great Park the hunting grounds of the Kings of England since the 11th century. Whilst bears and wild boar have long departed, deer can be regularly seen drinking from the lakes through the early morning mists. Recognised as one of the finest inland courses to be built in Britain in the past twenty years, Bearwood Lakes is eminently playable all year round with many exciting challenges from a good selection of well positioned tees. The golf course meanders through a backdrop of mature pines, beach and

cedar trees that provide the perfect backdrop to this stunning piece of land. The emphasis at Bearwood Lakes is private, peaceful and above all inspiring. Our stunning layout was designed by Martin Hawtree, who’s family golf architects practice was founded in 1912. Sunningdale Golf Club Sunningdale is blessed with two championship courses laid out on the most glorious piece of heathland winding their way through heather, gorse and pine, each one of which has its own individual charm.

Major Championships have been staged in every decade of Sunningdale’s history and its Champions include James Braid, Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Max Faulkner, Bobby Locke, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Bob Charles, Gary Player, Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer. Old Course Sunningdale Old Course was designed by Willie Park Junior and opened in 1900. It was laid out in the last days of the gutty ball, over a mixture of hills, heath and woodland that had hitherto not been considered as suitable for golf course construction. Urns containing fourteen iron-age skeletons were excavated during its construction. The course was considered extremely long and its popularity owed much to the development of the Haskell ball, initially imported from the United States.

Willie Park’s design was considered revolutionary at the time, and within a few years Harry Colt, the Club Secretary, had modified several holes and drastically altered others. Bernard Darwin in “Golf Courses of the British Isles”, 1910 believed that several of the holes had been greatly improved by the Colt changes. The Old Course is considered one of the best inland courses in the UK and is regularly found in various “100 top courses” rating lists. Many amateur and professional golfing events have been played here including the News of the World Professional Match Play Championship, numerous European Open Championships, many Ladies Open Championships, the Walker Cup, and more recently the International Final Qualification for the Open Championship

New Course Sunningdale’s New Course was designed by Colt and Morrison in 1923, on heathland including small copses and broom. The first five holes were more or less as now, although the track of the first and eighteenth holes had to be reversed. Colts sixth hole played down the line of today’s ninth hole, though along its left hand ridge to a green over the path down to Valleys End and the Brickmaker’s Arms. Holes 7-10 were hilly and in today’s woods right of the tenth hole on the Old. The tenth hole was played from the hill above, onto today’s tenth green, and the last eight holes

were much the same as current, although the thirteenth was fifty yards longer, and other green locations have been altered. More land became available in 1934, allowing architect Tom Simpson to scrap the hilly holes and create a clockwise loop, with a 500 yard tenth onto a green on today’s eleventh fairway, and the course was renamed the Jubilee course. This was not popular with members and in 1939 Colt and Morrison were asked to reassess. They reversed the loop, using Simpson’s greens, and built new greens for the thirteenth and eighteenth holes. Their re-design has lasted.

Buckinghamshire Introduction

Buckinghamshire A small county, merely 27 miles across east to west at its widest point and 50 miles in length, Buckinghamshire is nevertheless full of charm and beauty. Its numerous rivers such as the Thames and the Great Ouse, river valleys and hills, the Chilterns and picturesque villages, make for a wonderful place to tour, particularly on foot. Aylesbury, the county town of Buckinghamshire, is a lively market town steeped in history. Located at the foot of the Chiltern Hills and at the heart of the rich agricultural Vale of Aylesbury. The town was a focal point in the English Civil War in the 17th century. The ancient town of Buckingham dates back to the 7th century and contains some fine Georgian buildings as well as the imposing town hall and the distinctive Old Gaol, now a centre for Buckinghamshire Tourist Information.

Nearby is Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit and Stowe Landscape Gardens, one of the finest Georgian landscape gardens in Britain. The county is awash with wonderful golf courses, some of which you may have heard of before, others not so well known but still worth the trip. That’s the kind of opportunity that awaits would-be visitors to Buckinghamshirethe chance to explore and see something new.

“Its numerous rivers and picturesque villages make for a wonderful place to tour.”

Ellesborough

Ellesborough Golf Club is situated between Aylesbury and High Wycombe. If approaching from High Wycombe take the route through Princes Risborough. The optimum route from Aylesbury is through Wendover.

Ellesborough lies in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, with stunning views over the Oxford plain. Once part of the Chequers estate, with a long and illustrious history stretching back over more than 100 years, Ellesborough has enjoyed the patronage of Prime Ministers and statesmen such as Harold Wilson and Bill Clinton. The greens are a strong feature of the course and have long held a reputation as some of the finest and most challenging in the south east of England. The club regularly hosts the BB&O Open and in 2011 hosted the EWGA English Girls’

Championship. This superb inland links course is a test for golfers of all standards and the hospitality in the clubhouse will round off a wonderful day of golf. Signature Hole: Each hole has it’s own unique attributes, but among the most memorable is the 5th, a tough par 3 which is well protected by bunkers all round. Possessing one of the hardest greens on the course, with a difficult undulating putting surface and some very subtle borrows, you should be happy to walk off with a three. Greg Norman described it as ‘the longest 6 iron he has ever played’!

Set in over 200 acres of rolling Buckinghamshire countryside, the course was designed by Jonathan Gaunt, one of the UK’s leading golf architects. To many, it is known as the closest a parkland course can be to a Links due to its beautiful water features and sometimes windy conditions. Here at Magnolia Park Golf & Country Club we believe members and visitors alike should be able to experience the full benefits of our courses regardless of the season with the greens and tees open all year round. Played from the forward tees, the subtle undulating fairways will offer an exciting game for golfers of all abilities, whilst the

competition tees give the more experienced golfers a course with Championship potential. Magnolia Park is not a course to be taken lightly; if you’re playing well and taking full advantage of the conditions you can have a very enjoyable round. Peg it up thinking there’s a a low score to be had, this course will inevitably beat you. Signature Hole: 15th, Par 4, 446 Yards Aim for the left side taking the trouble out of play. The second into the green, 9 times out of 10, is always a club longer.

STOKE PARK

38

Stoke Park Stoke Park’s 27 hole Championship parkland golf course, known as Stoke Poges, is one of the finest of its kind in the world. Designed in 1908 by one of the greatest course architects of his generation, Harry Shapland Colt, Stoke Park became the UK’s first country club.

The course has received many accolades over the years, including ‘Golf Club of the Year’ and ‘Top 100 Courses you must play in the World’ by Golf World as well as a Gold placing in the HSBC Regional Course Rankings. Stoke Park is also notable for its many appearances on film over the years. Although the list is long, including the likes of Bridget Jones’ Diary and Layer Cake, it is bound to be Goldfinger which jumps to a golfer’s mind. Sean Connery’s James Bond tangled with Auric Goldfinger on Stoke Park’s 18th hole to produce the most memorable game of golf in cinema history. As well as being a challenging and demanding course you will find it hard not to be stirred by the exquisite views and landscapes of the championship course. These views are not surprising when one learns that Colt designed the course to work with the existing landscape, designed by Humphry Repton

and Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the 18th century. The club’s 27 hole course is made up of the three independent nine hole courses, Colt, Alison and Lane Jackson, and is one of only a few courses in Europe to do this. Colt’s ethos was that golf should be played with the mind and nowhere is this more true than at Stoke Park. He once said that “First holes should be long and easy” and here you will find a 524 yard Par 5 opening hole that is followed by 2 testing holes to get you into your round. Colt always made the most of natural surroundings when working on a course, using contours and slopes to create undulating fairways and defend his greens. These putting surfaces are often large, subtle and rolling, and this is certainly the case on the long Par 4 4th hole. Bunkers were very important to Colt, placed subtly around his designs. His liking for cross bunkers is on glorious show at the risk reward

Par 5 5th and Par 4 6th. Colt’s signature hole is the 7th, an awe-inspiring Par 3 often described as his single finest hole and the inspiration for the 16th hole at Augusta National which was designed by Dr Alistair Mackenzie, Colt’s good friend. A truly magnificent short hole, with a green that requires the utmost skill and precaution, par is always a good score. The 9th presents you with a great view of the stunning Georgian mansion which forms the clubhouse and another testing par 4, followed by a choice of refreshments at halfway. The Alison nine begins with two short holes the Par 4 10th hole and the Par 3 11th equalling the beauty of our signature hole, and both protected by water. Colt’s cross bunkering is again apparent on the long Par 4 12th and Par 5 13th, the latter offering a good birdie chance. The 14th once again brings you back to the mansion, setting a spectacular backdrop to your second shot. The final 4 holes allow for plenty of views of the wonderful building, none being closer than the 15th tee playing adjacent to the east side of the house and plagued with bunkers once more. The short Par 4 16th offers a respite before two great finishing holes in

the 17th and 18th. The 17th, a par 4, plays as a slight dog leg, with precision and accuracy needed from the tee to leave a second shot that plays over water. The 18th provides a great end to the round. A solid drive to the brow of the hill is required to give a clear view of the green. With the James Wyatt designed mansion once again in full view, a second shot to the heart of the green will leave one last breaking putt. Having completed your round, your day is complete with a small libation on the Orangery Lawn, reminiscing over your game, whilst taking in the breath taking views of the memorial gardens. If your hunger for golf is still not sated, then the Lane Jackson course beckons... It is a testament to Colt’s genius that his courses are admired by golfers at every level of the game. They still provide a genuine test and stand up to the challenges brought on by today’s modern equipment. Colt has without doubt left his legacy at Stoke Park. The course is further enhanced by the practice facilities, a 300 yard driving range, 2 dedicated short game areas, a putting green and indoor swing studio.

Weston Turville Golf Course was established in 1973. Situated at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, the course presents a demanding test for the lower handicap but is not so daunting that the higher handicap cannot score well and enjoy the game with prudent use of the shots they receive. Water hazards are a distinctive feature of the course and there is plenty of variety in the character of the holes.

Golf Club a “Special Venue” is the welcome you will receive. The Staff are dedicated and put themselves out to ensure that their customers are looked after… A real delight. Signature Holes: Among the many interesting holes is the 15th, a 90˚ dogleg to the left with a green guarded by bunkers and water. Even with a good drive the approach shot demands accuracy to give any real chance of par. Among the best of the par 3’s is arguably the 178 yard 16th which requires a precise tee shot through the trees to a two tiered green.

The Marquess’ Course, Hole 7

Woburn Golf Club The Duke’s, the Duchess’ and Marquess’ Courses. Experience unrivalled golfing with a choice of three championship courses, all featured in Golf Monthly Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the UK and Ireland. Woburn is the ideal venue for a quality golf day.

The Duchess’ Course, Hole 17

The Duke’s Course Having tested many famous names in golf it is still the course most people associate with Woburn. The Duke’s Course was the scene of the British Masters for twenty years as well as other top professional events.

The Duchess’ Course The Duchess’ Course is Woburn’s hidden gem and a fine example of a course built for the thinking golfer. The natural characteristics of each hole provide a testing challenge and demand a number of different strategies.

Designed by Charles Lawrie in 1974, when the late 14th Duke of Bedford decided to bring golf to the Woburn Estate, the 6,983 yard Duke’s course sports fairways lined with pine, silver birch and chestnut trees. Heather, bracken and gorse add to the charm of the course as well as providing some of the natural hazards of each hole. The famous third hole, framed by rhododendron bushes, has recently been voted into the ‘World’s Top 500 Holes’ by Golf Magazine.

Slightly shorter in length than the Duke’s Course, at 6,651 yards, the Duchess’ Course is cut from more formal pine forest. Its rolling fairways and subtle contours are deceptively landscaped to test the golfer’s full repertoire of shots. “Of the three Woburn courses, the Duchess’ is the one that puts a premium on that most elusive of golf talents: the ability to hit the ball consistently straight.” - Alistair Tait.

Dorset Introduction

Photos courtesy VisitBritain

Dorset Dorset is a county of outstanding natural beauty, with rolling hills, craggy coastlines and soft sandy beaches. It is famous for its picturesque coastline, which stretches from Lyme Regis in the west to Christchurch in the east, including the popular holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth. Dorset’s coastline was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2001 for its unique geological history and landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland and the shingle bank of Chesil Beach to name but a few. Dorset’s strong links with the sea mean water sports of all kinds are very popular. The waters off of Weymouth and Portland in particular are generally regarded as the best in Europe for sailing, which is why this area has been chosen to hold all the sailing events when London hosts the Olympic Games in 2012. For those of you who prefer your activity

and adventure to be on dry land, there’s also walking, horse riding, fishing, golf, tennis, llama trekking, zorbing and much, much more. Although Dorchester is the county town of Dorset, the nightlife tends to centre around Bournemouth, Poole and, to a lesser extent, Weymouth. The Bournemouth International Centre is a leading venue for music concerts, plays, stand-up comedies, conferences and exhibitions. Theatres in the region include the Pavilion and Pier in Bournemouth, the Pavilion in Weymouth, the Regent Centre in Christchurch and the Tivoli in Wimborne. With over 30 golf courses to choose from, Dorset is certainly a golfer’s paradise and the ideal location for a golf holiday. From nationally renowned to pay and play courses, there are plenty of venues to suit the novice or the expert.

Within 250 acres of rolling terrain, the fairways run freely and separately through superb natural heathland with its swathes of heather, pine, gorse and rhododendrons, and several holes offer magnificent views for miles around. Visitors are always welcome to play at Broadstone. The course is host to numerous Societies and Organisations througout the year

and can cater for groups of any size - from two people out to enjoy this fine course while on holiday, right up to a Corporate Day where the course can be yours for the whole day. Signature Hole Hole 7, Par 4, 422 Yards (White Tee) A strong Par 4. Tee shot should be at the marker pole to allow for the right to left contour of the fairway. Long hitters will get home in two, but if you are unsure, play to the second valley to leave yourself a pitch up to the green. A four here is always a good score.

The views take in Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island, Studland Village and the Isle of Wight. The course is situated on one of the larger expanses of varied heathland within Dorset and contains a variety of habitants. Ninety percent of the course is within a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and a special area of conservation (SAC).

Parkstone Golf Club “There is no better place”. Those were the words of Reg Whitcombe, Professional at Parkstone Golf Club and Open Champion of 1938 as he thanked members and local dignitaries at a dinner held to celebrate his Open success.

Today’s golf course is set in only 160 acres but on a most unique piece of land so close to Poole Harbour. Gary Peddie, General Manager at the Club describes Parkstone as “almost ‘Surrey Heathland’ in its design and presentation with rolling fescue fairways framed by heathland and mature pines.” The course was designed by Willie Park Junior (Open Champion of 1887 and 1889 from Musselburgh in Scotland) in 1909 and later extended and remodelled in 1935 by James Braid who was by then the professional at Walton Heath. It is great testament to Braid that over 70 years later his design continues to challenge and excite members and visitors alike. The course is now recognised as one of the most attractive and enjoyable heathland

courses in the country. The holes are set into gently undulating land with many of the greens or tees raised which always adds to the fun and challenge of the game. The course is not long, ranging from 5,550 yards for the ladies to 6,300 yards from the men’s medal tees. However, only a fool would underestimate the course as the fairways are fairly tight and a wayward shot can leave you with the challenge of recovering from the heather and gorse which lay in abundance. Each hole has its own character and is acknowledged by Donald Steel, the renowned course Architect, as a masterpiece that entices golfers. The emphasis today is on maintaining the true heathland character of the course; firm fast running surfaces of the highest quality.

Steve Richardson joined the Club as Course Manager, from Sunningdale, in 2011. He immediately saw the potential to transform this beautiful canvas into the finished article. The Dorset County Championship was played at the Club this year and competitors waxed lyrical about the playing conditions. If you are serious about the game, then you would not want to miss out on this meandering delight. The Club itself is simply steeped in history. Not many Golf Clubs can boast an Open Champion as their Professional. However, it does not stop there; Peter Alliss was the Professional at Parkstone for 13 years during the time that he was at the peak of his golfing career. The Club has also had a number of outstanding amateur golfers including Maureen Garrett

and Jean Bisgood, both of whom represented GB&I in the Curtis Cup. In more recent years the Club has produced many Dorset County players and indeed County Champions. Wrapped in history and tradition, Parkstone Golf Club is a friendly and most welcoming Golf Club, with the emphasis on a high level of customer service. Gary Peddie continues; “our objective is to match Reg Whitcombe’s words and to do that we have to meet the modern golfer’s expectations, an excellent course both in design and presentation, a level of quality service in every department of the Club whether that relates to a glass of chilled Chablis on our fabulous terrace or a custom fit session with Head Professional Martyn Thompson at our ‘Centre of Excellence’ on the range. Golfers will simply want to return.

Hampshire Introduction

Hampshire As a tourist destination, Hampshire has so much to offer: a diversity of landscapes, stunning coastline, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty including the magnificent New Forest; superb walking and cycling territory, the Hamble Valley with its unspoilt countryside and ‘olde worlde’ villages; the vibrant and historic cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester… and all this within easy reach of London by road or rail! Portsmouth is a large city with several different identities. The older parts are the Historic Waterfront where you can still find the sea defences that have protected Portsmouth for centuries. Southsea makes up the south of the city and is the focus for family seaside holidays and fun fairs. For more historical attractions there’s the Royal Naval Dockyard which although still in operation also has the Historic Dockyard Attractions on the premises.

Between the Historic Dockyard and Waterfront is Portsmouth’s most modern addition, Gunwharf Quays and the iconic Spinnaker Tower. This is the place for shopping, eating and drinking and of course climbing up the tower for unprecedented views of the city and beyond. Southampton or ‘The City of Kings’ lies on the South East Coast of Britain, at the Northern most point of Southampton Water. A population of over 230,000 makes Southampton the biggest city in Hampshire. Southampton has strong links all over the globe, with its trade, cultural and social exchanges positive aspects for this thriving city. With it’s coastal location, Hampshire offers pleanty of opportunities to sample some excellent links golf, and is complemented by some fantastic inland courses to interest, excite and amaze any golfing fanatic.

ARMY

From Farnborough: Go south towards Aldershot on the A325 (Farnborough Road). At the Holiday Inn roundabout take third exit as if going to the BAE Business Park. After about 400 yards, before entering business park, turn left into Shoe Lane. At next junction turn right into Forge Lane and drive a further 400 yards over small bridge to T junction with Laffan’s Road. Turn right and after about 600 yards (and over two sets of speed bumps, the entrance to the clubhouse and car park is on the right hand side. You’ve arrived! Facilities The course is situated on 165 acres of low, undulating woodland between Farnborough and Aldershot. It has a par of 71 and features three par three and two par five holes. The par threes, the shortest of which is 168 yards, are a particular challenge for most golfers. Measuring 6,550 yards from the white tees, our course is one of the longest golf courses in this area although the fairly level terrain means it remains a comfortable walk for most players. Today’s course layout was established in the 1960’s and during the summer the greens are reputed as being among the best in

Hampshire. Mature trees and rhododendrons border many of the shaped fairways and provide a blaze of colour in the spring. Groups of small deer can frequently be seen quietly observing play from woodland clearings adjacent to the fairways. Bridges, each bearing the cap badge of regiments, span ditches that provide attractive features. The fifteenth is now identified as the signature hole of the Army course. Beautifully remodelled in 2001 it features a stream flowing between well-supported banks in front of a forward sloping green. From any tee positions two solid, well-placed shots are needed to reach the green.

From the M3: Exit at junction 7 and take the A30 towards Basingstoke. The entrance to the Club is approximately 1 mile from the M3 on the right hand side (sign posted) soon after the road narrows to single carriageway. There is a right hand filter lane for the turning. Mott’s Motorcycles is next door as a reference. If you happen to miss the turn, proceed through the next set of traffic lights up to the roundabout and head back towards the M3. The entrance is then approximately 400 yards from the roundabout on the left hand side.

Basingstoke moved to its present location in 1928 and was officially opened on March 29th by the legendary six time Open champion, Harry Vardon and the famous course designer James Braid. The club is a regular host to a number of County amateur and professional events including all the major County Championships. The course is set in 110 acres of Deer Park and features many mature native British trees. The 6289 yard, par 70, course is synonymous of a ‘Braid’ parkland design, with rolling, undulating tree lined fairways,

excellent bunkering and subtly contoured greens. In the summer months, the greens are regarded as some of the finest in Hampshire Signature Hole Hole 18, Par 5, 491 Yards The second par 5 to finish the round. Avoid all the bunkers and a birdie opportunity awaits. Longer hitters will need to feed their drive right of the bunkers, shorter will not reach. The green awaits the big hitter in two but the entranceway is very narrow. Shorter hitters will lay up by the next set of bunkers to leave a pitch into the green.

Facilities

Built in 1993 the golf course was designed by the legendary Peter Allis to be a test of golf that caters for every standard of golfer. Due to the unique location of the course on the coast, we have excellent drainage meaning the course remains in superb condition all year round and we are the envy of local courses. The 18 hole, Creek Course complimented with the 9 hole Park Course means that you can play the course set up in 3 different ways which provides a great variety of golf. Offering breathtaking views across the marina and Portsmouth harbour the Creek Course is a

stern test where many a golfer has remarked that you can never play the course the same way twice. Being in such close proximity to the sea, the wind can and usually does play a determining factor in your round. The Park Course is a full length 9 holes, measuring 3202 yards and was built in the grounds of the old hall, a lovely course that compliments the Creek course well. A tree lined course that features lush fairways and tricky greens and pin positions, this course is an excellent compliment to the Creek as well as being a great course to just play 9 in the summer evenings.

In addition to the fantastic golf course we have an excellent range of amenities including, practice facilities, golf tuition from our Head Professional Sam Pleshette, Buggies and Trolleys available for hire, a fully equipped professional shop, the bar and restaurant and our two Function Rooms, the Avocet and the Harbour Rooms, ideal for Private Functions, Weddings, and Conferences.

MEON VALLEY

From Southampton airport: Join M27 East towards Portsmouth, exit at Junction 7 follow A334 signposted to Botley. Continue through Botley following signs for Wickham, Sandy Lane is to be found two miles after Botley on your left after Wickham Vineyard.

With a commitment to superior service and amenities this 4-star Marriott Hotel & Country Club set in 225 wooded acres of rolling countryside on England’s south coast enjoys a secluded environment near the motorway and just over 1 hour from London. The Meon Course features 18 championship holes located on the beautiful and undulating Hampshire countryside. The par 71 course cuts through an ancient English oak forest, offering many tight, tree-lined fairways, large bunkers and natural water hazards. Every hole on the Meon Course offers a challenging test of golf. “The Meon Course has everything...

the front nine tests your long game and courage, while the back nine requires careful planning and a strong will.” Neal Grist – Meon Valley PGA Professional 2012. The 9-hole Valley Course can be played as an 18-hole course at 5,758 yards and a par 70. The fairways are a bit wider than the Meon Course. But the beauty is just as spectacular - it is built around the ruins of an ancient Roman village. “The Valley Course is one of the most picturesque and challenging courses in Hampshire. I never tire of playing it and I’m sure that golfers of all standards will feel the same.” John Stirling – PGA Captain 1989.

NORTH HANTS

72

North Hants Golf Club Home since 1957 of the famous Hampshire Hog and a recent Open qualifying venue, North Hants is one of Hampshire’s outstanding courses with a reputation of having some of the finest and fastest greens in the South of England. Located less than 5 minutes from the M3 on the Surrey / Hampshire border, it is a true heathland gem where visitors always receive a warm welcome.

As anyone reading this guide will know, the South East of England has an abundance of wonderful and historic golf clubs, so any visitor to the area is spoilt for choice when considering which courses to try and play. So why should you consider North Hants as an appropriate destination for a day out golfing with friends? Well, firstly you can be assured that as a course it stands up to the most rigorous comparison with some of it’s perhaps more famous neighbours in Surrey and Hampshire. A James Braid layout that was improved by the legendary Harry Colt in 1913, the course is a superb example of a mature heathland layout with a delightful mix of heather and tall trees bordering each impressively manicured fairway. An Open qualifying course and constant Golf World Top 100 UK course, North Hants is home to one of the biggest Amateur Tournaments

in the game – The Hampshire Hog – an event won in the past by Sandy Lyle, Michael Bonallack and Justin Rose, amongst many others. Justin learned his golf here as a junior and still returns to play with his many friends. Measuring 6,600 yards from the back tees, North Hants is a true test of every club in the bag with a reputation of some of the finest and truest greens in the Country now enhanced by fairways benefitting from a recently installed irrigation system. Just to get the heart racing, the course starts with a devilishly difficult 200 yard par three to a well bunkered green, a hole even the club’s star players are mostly happy to take a bogey on. A sweeping dog leg second hole from a raised tee provides another tricky par but this gives way to a much more comfortable

“The rest of the front nine is classic heathland golfing fare, firm fairways giving way to well protected and fast greens.” and, for the low handicapper at least, a reachable par 5 third. This is a new hole, one of three designed by Donald Steel in 2001, and includes a spectacular approach over a lake to a raised and well contoured green. The rest of the front nine is classic heathland golfing fare, firm fairways giving way to well protected and fast greens. The short 8th is a classic par 3 which, though only 130 yards, requires a precise shot over a steep bunker to a narrow two tier green. When the pin is on the bottom, this is a true challenge. A recently re-bunkered ninth hole brings you back towards the impressive clubhouse and one of the best halfway houses anywhere in the region. So take a breather and enjoy one of our locally sourced sausage or bacon rolls before heading back out onto the back nine. Now it gets tricky. Another challenging, long par 3 starts the back nine so even if you start your round at the 10th it hardly breaks you in gently. The uphill 11th requires an accurate drive to avoid a well placed bunker about 230 yards up the left and then needs a decent shot to assure you of a par. The 12th is stroke 1 – a long sweeping dog leg to a two tier green with bunkers either side that tests even the finest strikers.

The last 6 holes of the course are a delightfully varied mix; up and down, doglegs both ways, a great par 3 15th and a long, challenging par 5 17th that has a green reminiscent of the Road Hole at St Andrews. As you step onto the 18th tee and face the imposing clubhouse once more, you will be 420 yards away from our final green, so enjoy a fantastic finishing hole. Our signature holes are the 1st and 10th, two great par threes that start each half. The new 3rd which requires a long, accurate drive down the left side of a sloping fairway to give you a shot of the green in two over a large lake. So, apart from a great course, why else would you want to visit North Hants? A large, modern and welcoming clubhouse which serves good food certainly helps get your visit off to a good start. A good pros shop with top brands at reasonable prices, fine practice facilities, brand new nets next to the first tee, and a new in 2012 a new fleet of buggies, if you want them, at reasonable prices. Above all, a friendly, informal, nonstuffy environment that belies it’s108 years of existence, a great place in which to enjoy your day at one of the South East’s best clubs. We genuinely look forward to welcoming you.

Oxfordshire Few regions can boast Oxfordshire’s variety, beauty, heritage and luxury. Discover towns and villages surrounded by the greenest of Oxfordshire countryside. Here you can enjoy extra long walks and play on some of the finest golf courses. Head west to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, with scattered grey stone villages, nestling in secluded valleys. Blenheim Palace and Cotswold Wildlife Park are among the treats in store.

Tew and great houses like Broughton Castle and Chastleton House near Adelstrop transport you to another era. Head South where the River Thames dominates, and towns such as Abingdon, Wallingford, and Henley grew up along its banks. Visit Didcot Railway Centre, with Britain’s only 7ft gauge, and the replica GWR locomotive, Fire Fly.

Head east: the wooded Chiltern Hills, once a focus of industrial activity, now shelter quiet country pubs and flint houses, dating back hundreds of years.

The county town of Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous the world over for its University and place in history. With its mix of ancient and modern, there is plenty for both the tourist and resident to do.

Head north: the Ironstone Hills’ gently undulating landscape is ideal for walking, cycling and golf followed by a relaxing spa treatment. Thatched villages such as Great

Carswell are celebrating the launch of their new exciting course layout following the construction of two new greens and multiple new tee’s on the golf course, whilst four lakes and strategically placed bunkers add to the interest.

For many golfers the 19th hole is at times the most important hole on the course, and at Carswell the Mecca for hungry, thirsty Golfers never disappoints. Signature Hole: 8th, Par 3, 159 yards A pretty par three. This green is set in the trees at the top of a little hill. Any shot hit left will kick away and a bunker waits over the back for a shot that is too strong. The green is highest in the centre and slopes away on both sides. Not many putts are conceded. Pat yourself on the back for any three that you make here. Evening golfers can get to see a lot of wildlife in this part of course with deer being regular visitors.

Frilford Heath

82

Frilford Heath Frilford Heath is Oxfordshire’s finest golf club, and one of the best in the south of England. Its three 18 hole championship standard golf courses offer a range of delights. With almost a hundred years of golf design heritage, players can choose a classic or a modern challenge as they see fit.

Situated on over 500 acres of glorious undulating heathland, just south of Oxford city, Frilford Heath present the courses to the finest playing standards all year round. The club’s land is, in part, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a programme of heather regeneration has seen a revival of the indigenous heathland flora and fauna. The club has a thriving membership and welcomes visitors who come to enjoy warm hospitality, excellent catering and some of the best golf around.

Oxfordshire’s most prestigious golf club will achieve a number of exciting ‘firsts’ in 2012. Frilford Heath Golf Club is proud to be hosting some top level events in the golfing calendar and will be featuring on national television for the first time. Thanks to an extensive list of improvements at the club in recent years which has seen over £500,000 invested in the clubhouse and its three beautiful courses, Frilford has attracted the attention of the top golfing associations and societies.

England Golf has recently staged its English Golf Captain’s Final at the club for the first time. So impressed were the organisers and players that they have pledged to hold the English Amateur Championship at Frilford in August 2013. The club will also welcome the EWGA Brenda King Foursomes Tournament this September. In April Frilford had its debut appearance on Sky TV when the final qualifying school for the PGA Europro Tour was played out at the club. The cameras will be rolling again in July when the Buildbase Open comes to Frilford.

Frilford’s oldest and most prestigious course, the Red was laid out in 1908 by JH Taylor, the five times Open Champion. Taylor may be less well known as a course designer than his fellow member of the Great Triumvirate, James Braid, but his track record is impressive. He was among the first course designers to build substantial artifical features on a course, at Royal Mid-Surrey, and along with his design partner Fred Hawtree, he played an important role in the creation of Royal Birkdale, often voted Britain’s top course. The Red was later tweaked by long-time club professional JH Turner, but in essence, it remains Taylor’s course, one of only a small number still remaining designed by one of golf’s legendary figures. The Red was described by Bernard Darwin as ‘both good and difficult’, and it still lives up to this description. An authentic championship challenge at 6,912 yards, it offers a traditional heathland golfing

experience with pushed-up greens that run fast and true and fairways that demand accurate driving if golfers are to score well. The stretch between holes five and nine is especially strong, with four hefty two shot holes and a par three that many will vote the most memorable on the course. The tee shot must carry a pond, and the elevated green is further protected by out of bounds to the rear. Seven consecutive par fours to close the round are a testing finishing stretch matched by very few courses.

Frilford Heath

84

Blue Course Frilford’s most recent addition, the Blue course, was opened in 1994 to great acclaim. Oxfordshire architect Simon Gidman, whose training in the long-established firm of Hawtree makes him a design descendent of JH Taylor, Frilford’s first architect, took 169 acres of adjoining farmland, and sculpted a course every bit the equal of the older tracks. The new land had fewer natural features than that occupied by the Red and Green, but it still had the precious sandy soil that makes Frilford what Bernard Darwin called

‘a wonderful oasis in the sea of mud’. Gidman used this sandy soil to build sweeping features that give the course a more modern feel than Frilford’s others, with hollows, swales and depressions adding to the interest. The layout explores every feature of the site and the par fives and par threes in particular all face different directions and set different tests. There are birdies to be had, even though, at 6,728 yards, the course is a considerable challenge. Equally there are two par fives - and the 600 yard monster that is the seventeenth hole is prime among them - that, without pinpoint accuracy on drive and second shot, a par will be almost impossible. The Blue’s greens are more severely undulating than those of the Red or Green, and thus put a premium on putting. The bunkering too is bold and challenging. A different course it may be, but no-one who plays the Blue at Frilford will feel hard done by.

Green Course Good Things come in small packages. As well as making alterations to the Red course, JH Turner, Frilford’s first professional, added a new nine holes to the club’s portfolio before World War Two. Together with nine more, built after the war by the respected British architect CK Cotton - whose other credits include courses of the stature of Ganton in Yorkshire, and Pennard in Wales, both of which he redesigned - Turner’s holes form the Green course.

Short the Green may be by modern standards, at only 6,015 yards. But its par of 69 - the first hole is the only par five - makes playing to one’s handicap much harder than a golfer might expect. Four outstanding par threes include the picturesque second and sixth, and the seventeenth, which at 206 yards is the longest ‘short’ hole on any of the Frilford courses. The loop formed by holes five to thirteen is separate from the rest of the property and has a lively peaceful feel, with gorse and birch prominent. Several strong par fours make the homeward stretch tough, but the 298 yard closing hole offers the chance of a smile-inducing finish.

“The club has a thriving membership and welcomes visitors who come to enjoy warm hospitality, excellent catering and some of the best golf around.”

Heythrop Park

86

Heythrop Park Heythrop Park is one of the most historic Estates in England and in keeping with its status is now graced by a quintessential English golf course which meanders over ridges and through valleys and is studded with ancient woodland, lakes and streams.

The new 7,088-yard par 72 course is the handiwork of Tom Mackenzie, of the internationally-renowned golf course architects, Mackenzie & Ebert, who are currently working on four Open Championship venues, Turnberry, Royal St George’s, Royal Lytham & St Annes and Royal Troon, as well as other prestigious projects as far afield as the Portugal, Angola, Germany, the Czech Republic, Germany, Canada and the West Indies. Mackenzie and Ebert are renowned for their sympathetic treatment of the landscape and nowhere is that better illustrated than at Heythrop, where the course was seeded as recently as the summer of 2008, but which will soon look as if it has been in situ for years. “Working at Heythrop has been a dream come true for me,” said Mackenzie, during a recent site visit. “My two great loves are golf and the landscape so to have the opportunity to work on such an historic site has been incredible.”

“Of course, it hasn’t all been straightforward,” he added. “We were tasked by the planners to replant 90% of the original parkland layout, and to route the golf course round it, which was a formidable challenge. But, with the help of the parkland experts, English Heritage and other government bodies, we have succeeded and we’ve been delighted at the initial reception the course as received.” It would be inappropriate to talk of signature holes on such an overtly English design but there is no doubt several holes stand out, not the least of which are the 314-yard par-4 6th, where the green nestles beside a fishing pond, and the 528-yard par-5 14th, which sweeps leftwards around an ancient woodland to a green that sits close to an 18th century stone bridge. Its fine set of challenging par-3s is also memorable and the same can be said for the unique 596-yard par-5 closing hole which is as straight as a die and has the Hall as its impressive backdrop.

Kirtlington is something of a jewel amongst new golf clubs in the South East of England. Firstly, although it is located just a few miles out of Oxford, you can survey the landscape from the first tee and barely find a house on the horizon. Secondly, it has been designed on an inland links basis, so instead of narrow fairways enclosed by towering trees you get a relatively forgiving flat open expanse littered with deep, testing bunkers and pristine, undulating greens. One of the things that appeals most about Kirtlington is that it caters to all levels of golfer, from the absolute beginner to the seasoned pro. The par-70, 18-hole course

has matured magnificently since it opened in 1995,and is now one of the best examples of a parkland course in the county. Alongside the tranquillity of its setting, the course’s slick greens provide something of a feature and are all built to exacting USGA specifications. It also boasts no less than 102 bunkers, each providing its individual challenge. Kirtlington also offers “The Blenheim”, a 1,535 yard, nine-hole course – the ideal place for a beginning or novice to make the transition from the driving range to the fairways. All nine greens are built to the same standards as on the 18-hole course.

Studley Wood Golf Club “History tells us that some 480 years ago, no less a person than Henry VIII used to enjoy his sporting afternoons here, hunting deer and wild boar As our name suggests, woods play an important part in the topography of the course. Designed by Simon Gidman, the par 73 course is set in 170 undulating acres of what was once an extensive woodland. History tells us that some 480 years ago, no less a person than Henry VIII used to enjoy his sporting afternoons here, hunting deer and wild boar. Two loops of nine holes play in oppositedirections around a 30 acre wood, which lies at the centre of the course. Testing natural hazards come courtesy of 13 lakes, some impressive ground vegetation and a richness of fine, mature trees, most of which are specimen oaks. Great care has

been taken to set out the 18 holes in such a way that each fairway and green has its own distinctive character and offers its own particular challenge. All the tees and greens meet USGA specifications and the irrigation system is fully computerised. The result is a course which, framed by an ancient and beautiful landscape, combines a feeling of maturity with the prospect of a rewarding round of golf. Signature Hole: 15th, Par 4, 373 yards The ideal tee shot is a draw to a fairway that is notoriously difficult to hold. Uphill second to probably the trickiest green on the course.

Wiltshire Introduction

Wiltshire

More than half of Wiltshire is occupied by the chalky Salisbury Plain and by the Marlborough Downs. Primarily an agricultural county, Wiltshire is rich and fertile with large areas for sheep grazing in the uplands and fertile valleys in the Lower Avon. Swindon is a leading industrial centre known for its locomotive works. Now known as Old Town, the original Swindon is a pleasing place to while away the hours. Wander through its quiet courtyards and alleyways, or enjoy a vibrant mix of traditional shops and inns alongside modern outlets and stylish cafes and bars Salisbury is the only city in Wiltshire and is home to some of the most historic landmarks in England. This is still a very lively city, with regular markets being staged in the city twice a week for more than 600 years.

For the visitor, all of Wiltshire is awash with historical sites, unique ruins and attractions to suit everyone. The distinctive silhouette of Stonehenge is known the world over, exuding a mystery that has enthralled successive generations. Protected as a world heritage site, it is arguably Britain’s greatest prehistoric monument - the substantial remains of a sequence of monuments erected between around 3050 and 1600 BC. Golf in Wiltshire offers courses that are a great challenge for all levels of players from the low handicappers to the fair weather players. Wiltshire is truly an enchanting area to play the game of golf. Blending into the environment it is often difficult to detect where the countryside ends and the golf courses begin with facilities contributing to and enhancing this ‘rural’ feel.

BATH

Bath Golf Club is ideally situated just a mile from the centre of the City. If leaving the City on the A36 towards Warminster, North Road rises to the right alongside The Bath Spa Hotel. Climb the hill and after approximately 600 yd the driveway to the golf club is on your left.

Bath Golf Club, established in 1880, has one of England’s finest and oldest inland courses. The 18 hole, 6505 yard, par 71 course may not be the length that today’s course designers favour, but in the 1880s they knew how to create a challenge using the natural contours of a hilltop location. The course is full of variety and is laid out over fine “golfing country”. Springy downland turf over shallow soil and limestone ensures rapid draining and the course is usually found to be in superb condition. Facilities include a club house, restaurant and bar; well stocked pro shop with trolley hire; driving range, practice green & bunker; locker

rooms, changing and shower facilities. The club also caters for conferences, business meetings, seminars, award dinners, weddings etc. There is always a comfortable atmosphere in which to unwind after the game courtesy of our friendly and efficient staff. Also, most of the social events staged at the club are well attended and a real joy. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4, 305 Yards The out of bounds wall on the right is 25 yards from the centre of the fairway. The two tier green has a large slope in the middle and care must be taken to judge your approach precisely.

In addition, there is a great 9 hole, par 33 course, (Yellow: 2690, Red: 2378) without water hazards, ideal for those who do not have the time for 18 holes.

The well-designed championship-standard par-71 18-hole course is set in parkland with views of the wonderful Wiltshire countryside. It features water hazards and provides a challenge for all standards of golfer.

Broome Manor Golf Complex also has one of the best floodlit driving ranges in the area, with 26 covered, floodlit bays, and 7 open air bays. All have high quality mats, golf balls and are carpeted. Since opening in 1994 Cumberwell Park is now established as one of the best courses in the South West and has been awarded four stars in Golf World’s Top Courses in Britain. The Club is also an accredited Golf Mark and Club Mark facility, and our team of dedicated green staff take tremendous pride in their work.

The 36 hole course designed by Adrian Stiff provides different challenges for golfers of every ability. The course encompasses a wonderful blend of rolling countryside, lakes, streams, natural copse and woodland. The natural contours of the landscape have shaped the design of the course, which covers 400 acres. The beauty and interest of the course is further enhanced by nine lakes, thirty-four acres of woodland and free flowing streams. All greens have been constructed and maintained to the highest specification, and the tees are built with a sandbased root zone mix.

Hamptworth Golf & Country Club boasts one of the finest courses in the South of England, the course has a fine reputation and has held some major professional events in its short but prestigious time. The course gently weaves its way through the ancient woodland of the Hamptworth estate giving you the impression that the course has stood here for more than 100 years.

walk with the gentle sounds of the river trickling in the background can lead you into a false sence of security as the course has a real bite to it , it is sneaky long and the undulations test your ball striking and your patience! To master the course you need to have an even mix of distance and accuracy, ball control is a must as trying to overpower this course will only lead to disapointment on your behalf.

The course is the perfect mix of forest, downland and intriguing water hazards, most of which are the result of the river Balackwater meandering its way through the course giving it its very own natural qualities. The peacefull

High Post, Salisbury The warmest of welcomes awaits you at this classic and rare down-land golfing experience, with arguably the finest and quickest greens in the south.

easy walking. However, perhaps the course’s greatest asset is the outstanding quality of the turf on the fairways, almost guaranteeing the golfer the perfect lie every time.

Summer tees and greens are playable all year. The natural terrain is free draining and

Established in 1922, the English Golf Union has recognised our course as a great test

of golf by asking us to host the Carris Trophy and the English Boys Open - both attracting strong international fields. High Post’s reputation is further enhanced by the legendary Peter Alliss, who once rated our ninth hole in his top 18 dream holes in the UK. The course, one for the purists and connoisseurs of the game, is characterised by deep hollows, 70 bunkers and wispy tall fescue roughs, all designed to catch errant shots. The greens are slopy and the surfaces quick and tricky. Throw the inevitable breezes blowing at the 300 foot altitude into the mix and it makes the course a genuine strategic challenge. Indeed 6 under par (64) is the course record further reinforcing the degree of difficulty and ensuring that only golfers with finesse, imagination and the purist of ball striking are likely to master this true down-land gem. Inside the clubhouse, locker rooms are available for members and visitors to use with showers and changing areas. Outside, you will find a secure golf bag storage area and an air compressed shoe cleaner.

RUSHMORE

From Salisbury: Leave Salisbury on the A354 heading towards Blandford Forum. After about 11 miles you reach a large roundabout. Take the 3rd exit onto the B3081 towards Sixpenny Handley. Pass through Sixpenny Handley village heading towards Tollard Royal. The golf club entrance is about a mile further on the right hand side. The drive takes you through the Rushmore Park. When the road divides, take the right hand fork (signed Golf Club). You will cross a cattle grid into the golf course, the clubhouse is ahead, with the car park behind it.

Set within one of the most stunning landscape settings of Southern England, high on the chalk of the Cranborne Chase in Wiltshire, Rushmore Golf Club provides year-round golf on free-draining turf. It combines the best of both worlds; a thoroughly modern golf course set in beautiful, ancient parkland which is now forging a reputation as one of the best golf courses in the region. The course begins in the designated parkland of the old deer park before you cross the ‘Shire Rack’ into Dorset, with incredible views towards the south coast & as far as the Isle of Wight. A haven for wildlife, you will see ducks

& moorhens near the ponds & if you get a little closer, frogs, toads & newts. Away from the waters’ edge, the course provides a habitat for butterflies, birds & small mammals. Other visitors include the deer that roam free in the surrounding woods & on a sunny day you might even see the macaws that sometimes fly over from the neighbouring Larmer Tree Gardens. The Rushmore Restaurant, Spikes Bar & TV Lounge are open to all. The clubhouse has stunning views over the historic parkland & golf course, with a restaurant that seats up to 80 people & with further seating on a fabulous decking, when the weather is fine.

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol Spain

The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.

In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.

The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.

COSTA DEL SOL

Marbella Club Golf Resort Only a few have played it, but everyone fell in love Elegance, style, friendliness, excellence, peaceful perfection‌ these words will come into your mind from the first moment you step into the Marbella Club Golf Resort, even before you get to the first tee.

COSTA DEL SOL

South Central Golf Guide

Marbella Club Golf Resort was inaugurated in 1999 after being designed and built by world famous golfer Dave Thomas. This is probably one of his most exciting projects, mainly because creating a golf course up to the standards of the historic Marbella Club Hotel was an absolute challenge.

The course demands a good knowledge of how to hit the ball with different clubs from different lies and concentration is a must to avoid being distracted by the stunning views of the rock of Gibraltar, North African Atlas mountains, the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding Benahavis countryside.

Having said this, the result is a hilly but fair golf course with well protected greens and a good number of elevated tees. The 18th is a breathtaking hole with one of the most inviting tee shots you will ever play. It is a shame not every golfer can play the Marbella Club Golf Resort and experience this hole.

Fascinating facts about the Marbella Club Golf Resort: - Average tee time interval is 20 minutes - Limited number of players per day is 80 - The course lay out keeps most fairways separated from each other, ensuring privacy

Marbella Club only allows a limited number of visitors per day and therefore advance booking is strongly recommended. Keep this in mind: The hardest part of your day will be deciding what you liked most, the Golf Course or the Club House Restaurant, where you’ll be served by the friendliest and most professional staff in Costa del Sol. Marbella Club Golf Resort has a younger sister, El Higueral Golf, which has quickly become a reference in Marbella. This course opened in 2007, allowing golfers to play a surprising and picturesque golf course which is walkable,
