The great British Golf Society is as big an institution as bacon and eggs and the village fayre - there are big ones, small ones, work ones, pub ones and golf club ones - there are literally thousands of them and they represent a positive cash injection to all golf clubs up in this region. I happen to be coming to the end of my Captain’s year of Scholes Golf Circle. We have 20 active members old and new, averaging about 14 to 16 members per event and play out of Garforth Golf Club. I am not saying things have changed but when I joined 15 years ago I was interviewed as to why I wanted to join - let’s just say we have relaxed that rule for the time being! We have all the usual society ingredients; a polyester tie you could nearly cut yourself with, a secretary wanting to call it a draw every year but after a couple of beers and telling him how wonderful he is we get him to stay for just one more year - but this is his last he says. The treasurer is an ex-Bank Manager, a handicap system that never works, but this is all part of the fun and by hook or by crook we bodge it together and have a great time - our youngest member is 17 and our oldest is in his eighties. We have six events a year and end up with a player of the season - Jason Langshaw come on down. My Captain’s Day was at Scarcroft and our away day was at Pike Hills, all we now need is a Golf Guide to book next years events!

The Growth in

Society Golf is more popular than ever before as work colleagues from the private and public sectors, shift workers, golf club members, nomadic golfers, newcomers to the sport of golf, singles groups and groups of friends regularly get together to enjoy each others company on and off the golf course.

Absolute research and hard data into the world of Society Golf is hard to come by. We are aware of societies from the long established Golf Society of Great Britain with 850 members to thousands of smaller groups of golfers, some you may have heard of like; the County Golf League, the Newcastle Licensed Taxi Drivers Golf Society, the North Yorkshire Golf Society, the Doxford Sports and Social Golf Society, the Virtual Golf Society, the Hole in One Golf Society and the West Yorkshire Ambulance Golf Society. There are others you may not have heard of with unusual acronyms like SAD GITS (Six at Dicks Golf in the Sun), ORGS (Old Reptonian Golf Society) and PIGS (Plastics Industry Golf Society). Each group on average comprises 30 members, though golf clubs generally

regard 8 as a minimum number for a visiting party. Anecdotally it would appear that typically each society will run between two and sixteen golf days per year, with 16-20 players per event, each spending £35/head including green fees and food, equating to a not inconsiderable annual average golf spend per society of c £5,000. There appear to be a number of factors that in combination have resulted in the growth of Society Golf: • Membership golf courses show their numbers are static • It is cheaper and more informal to be a member of a society • Pay and play golf courses are in decline • There is a significant rise in “nomadic” golfer numbers

• The EGU report year on year increase in visitor rounds (27.6 million/year) • Golfers continue to enjoy playing different courses • There has been a drop in corporate golf days as the recession bites • Golf clubs in tough times are keener to attract visitors • Competitive pricing as golf clubs compete for the same business • Online specialists make it much easier to book (e.g. Teeofftimes.co.uk, Teetimes. co.uk and Reservatee.co.uk) Duncan Rougvie, Northern Account Manager for the UK’s leading tee time booking service Teeofftimes.co.uk, reckons his company books around 700 society days across the UK each year. “Such is the interest, that we now handle this activity through a dedicated society golf team.

More and more golf clubs are recognising the value of society bookings, as they realise the potential incremental revenue or ‘onsite spend’ on offer from visiting groups can provide a big boost to club finances. As a result of this, society golfers are now spoilt for choice in not only the amount of venues to choose from, but also in the deals that are on offer including complimentary places for group organisers or free green fee vouchers.”

Yorkshire PGA Mizuno Assistants Order of Merit

R&A announce rule changes for 2012

The Yorkshire PGA Mizuno Assistants Order of Merit reached a stunning climax at the final event held at Knaresborough Golf Club (pictured). Run by the Yorkshire PGA the event receives great support and backing from Mizuno. The stunning parkland course in North Yorkshire was the venue for this year’s final event.

One of the biggest golf rules changes for next year will be about ball movement. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club announced rules changes Oct. 24. Before this date, so long as a player was deemed to have addressed the ball, he or she was penalised a stroke for the ball moving even if the golfer didn’t touch it before he struck the shot. That will no longer be the case from 2012 to 2015.

Unlike many of the beach resorts along the Costa del Sol, Spain - La Cala’s high season extends into October and November as visitors from across Europe join local residents to enjoy the resort’s golf, spa and other facilities.

Heading into the last round there were 2 men out in front fighting for top spot. Dave Mansell of Wakefield GC and last year’s Order of Merit winner, Greg Hyde from Wath on Dearne GC. On one of the hottest days of the year and with the Knaresborough course in immaculate condition, Greg Hyde made a fantastic birdie 3 on the 18th to snatch victory on the day by 1 shot with a score of 1 under par. After his round Hyde thanked Knaresborough Golf Club for hosting the final event and paid tribute to the excellent condition of the course. He also thanked the Yorkshire PGA and of course Mizuno for their continued support and sponsorship.

Stars Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson were victims of the rule this year. In some instances, penalising golfers for a shot won’t be necessary. If the ball is moving just as someone goes to hit it, the effect might be detrimental to the stroke. A ball already in motion will alter the trajectory before a club strikes it. A golfer hitting a ball in motion is deemed to be a penalty of one stroke. Golfers in a hazard will now be permitted to smooth over sand and soil, including before playing from said hazard, provided it does not improve a stance, the lie of the ball or the line of play, and is for the sole purpose of caring for the course. Another change involves redefining what addressing the ball means. Now it will be defined as simply grounding your golf club behind the ball, regardless of the stance.

One of the recent groups to visit was from Leeds Grammar School. Group leader Phillip Holmes and coaching staff James Veitch & Orla Fitzsimmons commented on the excellent quality of each course and how much they and all the students had enjoyed playing at the resort. The students were from 14 to 18 years of age and walked all three courses. Since 1989, la Cala resort has developed into the biggest golf and leisure destination in Spain with 3x18 holes golf courses, a luxury five star hotel and spa, sporting facilities plus a David Leadbetter Golf Academy. Goes inside The Golf Guide Tour Two writers from the Sky Sports team, Dave Tindall and Ben Coley, recently played in our Yorkshire based Golf Guide Tour events, and were entertained enough to write a feature about their experiences. Our warmest regards go out to Dave and Ben, and we hope to see them again on the 2012 Tour schedule.

Ilkley review by Dave Tindall (Skysports.com golf editor) It’s a pleasant September day, the scenery is fantastic and my playing partner Paul Simpson has just smashed a recovery shot from the trees full toss into the shoulder of one of our fourball foes, Bruce Mackrill. When I tell you that Bruce didn’t even flinch – recalling Brian Close against the West Indies all those years ago - our location becomes obvious. Yes, we’re in Yorkshire where the landscapes are beautiful and the folk are tough as nails. The venue is the extremely picturesque golf club in Ilkley and, before I’ve even struck a ball, I’m already onto a winner. I’m playing a great course, enjoying excellent company and if Paul and I can find our ‘A’ games we might even win a golf trip to the Costa del Sol. The event in Ilkley is the penultimate stop on the 2011 Yorkshire and North East Golf Guide Tour which has already taken in one Ryder Cup venue Moortown, as well as Moor Allerton, Middlesbrough, Hull and Ripon and ends at the KP Club in York (see Ben Coley’s review). The Golf Guide magazine may be familiar to some of you already. It’s already enjoyed five years of success in Spain with its sister magazine the Costa del Sol Golf Guide and recently in the UK with the North West & Cumbria Golf Guide and in Ireland with the Irish Golf Guide.

35 but thanks to Paul’s birdie at the par three 14th we cash in on another of the day’s prizes. Any pair scoring a two get free entry into the next event so, having failed woefully at Nearest the Pin & Longest Drive as well as the main prize, we’ve scored a little victory of our own.

This famous West Yorkshire course has just completed a £300,000 investment programme to improve the clubhouse and on-course facilities. Add that to the stunning views that money can’t buy and it represents excellent value for money.

It’s eventually Anthony Magrs and Paul Fraser from Ripon who win the threenight stay in Spain after a storming back nine of 26 gives them a tally of 44.

The format today is Pairs better ball Stableford and for a hacker like me that’s the kind of golf I like. I’ll take the good and then hope Paul bails me out whenever I throw in the inevitable shocker. It’s our partners Bruce and Dave (Creswell) that make the early running though, showing us young ‘uns the way. Dave, off 10, reveals himself to be something of a demon putter while Bruce (6) doesn’t appear to have a single weakness. At halfway they’ve already racked up 23 points while Paul and I are trailing with 19. Bruce and Dave can’t quite keep up the pace and their 42-point haul leaves them just short of the main prize but they’ve been cracking company and today has been about much more than just trying to focus solely on a winning score. Paul and I finish in the middle of the field with

KP Club review by Ben Coley (Skysports.com writer) There’s a sense of calm as I arrive at the KP Club in Yorkshire for the final Yorkshire and North East Golf Guide Tour event of the season. It’s a bright and mild October day, we’ve just driven past a Buddhist sanctuary and the World Peace Café. The state-of-the-art clubhouse perched on top of a hill certainly makes a statement - could I do the same on the course?

After good drives from playing partner Dave Tindall and our fellow two-ball, Luke and Terry, I shatter my personal tranquillity by topping a three-wood less than 25 yards and not even down the middle. Nerves have always tormented my golf swing and if my life’s dream of playing in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is to be realised I’m going to need my housemate to rob some seriously strong Beta Blockers from his uncle’s chemist. Fortunately the Golf Guide Tour is a betterball format and I’m a team player, so Dave’s A1 drive and A1 hybrid means we as in the Royal we have a 20ft birdie try on the downhill first hole, (Dave three-putts) we move on. The KP Club is a relatively new development set in the heart of 400 acres of beautiful countryside looking out over the Yorkshire Wolds. If you can hit it straight you’ll be fine until you get to the greens, when you may need a spirit level, compass and/or local expert if you want to make a putt. Our playing partners – Luke and Terry – are members at Oulton Hall in Leeds and had already been involved in three previous Golf Guide Tour events. Luke, an affable chap with a raw talent for the game, bemoaned the fact that they always peaked the week before these events and it was clear the prospect of a holiday in Spain was in the forefront of his mind.

Terry, whose languid swing represented a true testament to timing, matched his partner perfectly. Luke was erratic but bold where Terry was straight and sound and as a pair they were most certainly capable of putting a run together. Unlike Dave and myself, who never got out of third gear. At the third, Dave and I mistook nearest the pin for furthest from the pin but Terry set himself up for the prize (free entry into one of next year’s events) with a floated wedge that stopped within a couple of feet, only for the flat stick to let him down. And so to the fourth. 600 yards. Uphill. Straight into the wind’s teeth. When my tee shot once again failed to leave the ground I knew I couldn’t score, but Dave was bravely carrying the torch with a nice drive, followed by a fivewood, and another five-wood, and another five-wood...and at last we could see the flag. Five good hits and two solid putts meant we got a point but if I have a quarrel with KP it’s her fourth hole, one that eats the amateur alive.

eight-iron floated on the wind, landed three-feet from the pin like a feather on a bed of bubblegum and… ran through the back. As I said, I hate playing downwind. In the interim Dave and I had our highlights but, typically, these were the holes our handicaps didn’t allow us to score extra on. But, nonetheless, they were small victories that made the day even more pleasant when reflected upon. Our company was exactly that - pleasant - Terry indeed won the nearest the pin competition with his delightful wedge on the third. Luke will be saddened to find out that the prize wasn’t a trip to Spain but chin up son - there is always next year and God loves a trier. About The Golf Guide Tour

Leeds Golf Club to buck the trend in 2012

Changes at Sandburn Hall Golf Club

17-year-old Teejay White became the 2011 Northern Matchplay Golf Championship champion when he staged a fabulous fight back. The three-handicapper took on Bishop Auckland’s Stephen Ridley (4 hcp) - coming from six-down over Alwoodley’s famous golf course in the final to land the coveted title.

The current financial climate has led Leeds Golf Club to take the unprecedented step of reducing its full subscription rates for 2012. Whilst other clubs increase their rates, Leeds Golf Club’s full 2012 subscription will now be £880, down from £995 in 2011.

The Flaxton course (pictured below), situated just off the A64 near York, recently celebrated its sixth anniversary and the 6,723 par-72 track is about to get another makeover by head greenkeeper Brian Hall and his team. Last year, chiefs built new bunkers on the first hole and deepened the existing bunker on the seventh, while new trees were also planted to tighten some of the wider holes.

Rotherham Golf Club have produced many fine golfers over the decades and it would appear that there is now a new kid on the block. The South Yorkshire club can account for the upbringing of several young amateurs through the amateur ranks, many of which have gone on to turn professional and compete at the highest level, the most notable being Danny Willett. The Thrybergh club have dominated county golf for a number of years and it looks as though a new name may soon be added to their enviable list of top golfers. The Club has also changed its subscription renewal time. Traditionally, annual subscription renewals fall in December, already an expensive time of year. Leeds Golf Club has introduced a one-off 6-month membership to run until the end of June. After this, the Club’s 12-month membership will run from July to July. Members wishing to ‘lock in’ the 2012 price until July 2013 can sign up for 18 months at a cost of £1320. New flexible payment schemes have also been introduced. Over this winter, the Sandburn Hall green keeping staff are planning further improvements, as part of a long term development programme over the next five years. This will include additional tree planting to give the holes more definition and new bunkering, making existing bunkers more of a challenge, as well as constructing championship blue tees to bring the overall length of the course to more than 7,000 yards. Emma Brown, clubhouse manager says: “This is about keeping the club moving forward. It’s to make it more of a challenge for members so it is fresh every time they go out to play, it’s so that visitors who come back can see we are developing further and, hopefully, they will want to come back and enjoy it more.”

Smith sparkles at Oulton to take golfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest trophy The members of the Great Triumvirate who won no fewer than sixteen Open Championships between the years of 1895 and 1914, Harry Vardon, JH Taylor and James Braid, were responsible for the establishing of the Professional Golfers Association in 1901.

The Leeds Cup was donated to the North Region of the PGA to mark their foundation by Mr William Penrose Green, a former Lord Mayor of the city, on behalf of the Leeds Golf Club at Cobble Hall, of which he was President. Leeds Golf Club therefore rightly lays claim to be the spiritual home of the Leeds Cup It was first played for in 1902 and was won by the legendary Harry Vardon. Very few people would have envisaged that the huge sterling silver cup would still be played for to this day, making it the oldest trophy in professional golf.

During its history, many famous names have been inscribed as winner including Open Champions Vardon, Sandy Herd, George Duncan and Ted Ray, the latter winning on five occasions. A number of Ryder Cup stars have also been victorious including Archie Compston, Abe Mitchell and more recently Gordon J Brand and Howard Clark. Over the years many of the Leeds Cup winning professionals have been attached to golf courses in the Yorkshire and North East region including Huddersfield, Ganton,

Moortown, Seaton Carew, Moor Allerton, Renishaw Park, Ilkley, Middlesborough, Lindrick, Seahouses and Keighley. Simon Dyson rises into world’s top 30

Yorkshires Simon Dyson, attached to Malton and Norton in North Yorkshire (pictured below), won the KLM Open for the third time in six years in the Netherlands to climb into the world’s top 30 for the first time. Dyson, a Walker Cup team-mate of Luke Donald and Paul Casey in 1999, birdied four of the last seven holes to beat his fellow Englishman David Lynn, champion himself in 2004, by one shot. Dyson’s victory was also his second in seven weeks. The 33-year-old from York took the Irish Open at the end of July.

Daniel Denison from Howley Hall Golf Club in Leeds claimed the first win of his professional career at the ECCO Tour Championship presented by Thomas Björn and Mercedes Benz, completing a remarkable comeback from a horrific injury sustained four years ago.

Dyson joins a list of three-time winners of the title that includes Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer and he said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be on the same trophy as names like those two. The Yorkshireman commented “It’s something special, a dream come true really. To win any title once is tough, but to win it three times is a fantastic feeling.” Dyson won his third Seve Trophy cap for Britain and Ireland helping to beat Continental Europe in Paris , but a Ryder Cup debut is the big target. You would need to be quick off the mark at Malton and Norton Golf Club to get a front row seat if that was to happen.

The Englishman, who broke both legs in a car accident shortly after competing in The 2007 Open Championship, began the day one shot off Alessandro Tadini’s lead but fired a superb 69 to finish on eight under par 208, one stroke clear of Frenchman Charles-Edouard Russo at Lübker Golf Resort in Denmark. Denison picked up the first prize of €25,600 for winning the weather-affected tournament, which was reduced to 54 holes, and the cheque moved him up from 13th to second place in the European Challenge Tour Rankings, strengthening his hopes of securing a European Tour card for 2012. “I don’t know what to think yet, it’s a bit surreal really,” said the 26 year old, whose previous best finish this year came at the duel ranking SAINT OMER OPEN presented by Neuflize OBC, where he came tied second.

The new clubhouse will have capacity for around 80 people seated along with a soft seating area, a kitchen for freshly cooked food, increased Pro Shop space and offices. The building itself will be constructed with a brick finish to give the club a great image when arriving into the car park. Golfers have been very impressed with the recently developed £40,000 changing facility, and we found that the increasing demand for a bigger clubhouse came after an increase in members joining from other golf clubs in the region. The building is projected to be opening around November time at which point the club will begin hosting bigger events for the corporate and leisure sector.

The Solheim Cup Through the eyes of Simon Hurd Former European and Asian Tour player and born-and-bred Yorkshireman, Simon Hurd recently attended The Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle to represent his company, Druh Belts & Buckles, which was honoured to be the official belt supplier to both the European and US Teams.

Whilst Simon has attended hundreds of golf tournaments both as a player and as the man behind Druh Belts & Buckles, he was not quite prepared to find himself in the thralls of such a fiercely-fought battle as Europe took on the US for the 12th time at the biennial competition that is the ladies equivalent of The Ryder Cup.

Cup. To be honest I was massively impressed by the standard of golf displayed by the ladies on both teams. There was also an awful lot of camaraderie, passion and commitment shown by the two sides which really gave an edge to the competition. Both teams desperately wanted to prove themselves and win The Cup.

What were your first impressions on arrival at Killeen Castle? Killeen Castle is stunning and would be a fantastic backdrop for any golf tournament. Overall the venue itself was perfect for a team competition – for the teams to be on site was great whilst for the spectators the viewing set-up was brilliant. There was also an impressive merchandise tent and excellent catering facilities which were all so well

What was the atmosphere like? The atmosphere was very tense but also extremely exciting and by the time Sunday came, it was electric! The Irish came out in force and their support was very vociferous and spirited though I was quite surprised to find that there were so many Americans in the crowd, so much so that I reckon it was probably around 50:50 on the first couple of days. the stand-out player for me. For me, she really is a proper, all-encompassing player. Did Europe deserve the win? Without a doubt Europe deserved to win. In fact, they should have won by more! On Friday and Saturday, there were quite a few games where Europe was ahead and in control for most of the time but then let it slip down the last. In truth, they should have been four or five points up come Sunday morning. Still they dug deep on the final day and came out the worthy winners.

It was perhaps a surprise that the Irish crowds were out in force, given no Irish players made the European Team? You know it’s probably a bit to do with the Rory/Darren/Graeme ‘effect’. I think that their success in the majors over the last year or so has really woken the Irish up to golf and that they were just pleased to be a part of a great golf tournament held in their country. In fact, at the weekend they were very loud but very fair and were clapping the performances of both teams.

I know her pretty well and she is one of the strongest and most determined lady golfers that I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing with so no surprise that she was

You have always been seen as a bit of a style icon on the fairways and you like to dress well so who for you won in the style stakes, the US or Europe? For me personally it was the US Team. They looked really smart and striking all week and they used their country’s colours to good effect. The Americans also tend to go for a bit of bling when they accessorize and I think that worked well for them. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the European colours but it was all a bit bland for me. Of course both teams were wearing great-looking belts! Would you go and watch another Solheim Cup? Yes definitely, without a doubt! It was great fun and good to see all the team bonding that went on between both teams. I was lucky enough to go into Europe’s team room where they had set up table tennis, Scalextric, enormous TV screens, a pool table, a Nintendo Wii and so on. The atmosphere in there was tremendous and gave the players a chance to relax together whilst also building up a good team spirit. For me, any team sport is good because of the camaraderie involved and it’s even better when it’s golf!

The Ryder Cup last year suffered with the weather. How did the weather hold up in Ireland as it’s known for its high rainfall? The first day was pretty cold and wet but on Saturday it was like a summer’s day! Unfortunately it was a real shame that on Sunday the weather was just awful again. However it didn’t really take too much away from the competition and to be honest, it’s what you would expect in Ireland. Why do you think it’s so green - it’s not called the Emerald Isle for nothing! What were your thoughts on the course at Killeen Castle? Was it a tough course for the ladies? The course conditioning was perfect but for the players the greens were extremely tough. On a lot of the holes there is some heavy undulation on the greens which made it difficult for the girls to get the ball close to the hole and if they did, the big runaways

South Leeds help raise £7K for Candlelighters

Award-winning Rudding Park hosted ‘The Haven’s Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Golf Day’ on Friday 7 October.

On completion of the course the ladies enjoyed the Repton Short Course before changing for a three course dinner and the results at Rudding Park’s Regency House. First place went to Margaret Frankland and Wendy Brearley from Marsden Park Golf Club. Second place went to Sandra Taylor and Sue Stuart-Brown from Rudding Park Golf Club with a better back nine than the ladies in third place, Jemma Lassey and Dot Phillips from Settle Golf Club.

The South Leeds Golf Club Charity Golf Day in August was a great success with over 200 people playing, and many more families and friends attending and giving their support than ever before.

Other winners include: Fiona Stoddard (Longest Drive, 7th hole), Judy Shaw (Nearest the Pin, 5th hole), Sally Weatherall (Nearest the Pin, 8th hole), Joy Bowler (Nearest the Pin, 14th hole), Dawn Taylor (Straighest Drive, 1st hole).

130 ladies, dressed in their brightest pink golf attire, raised over £2,700 for the The Haven, the only national breast cancer charity that provides one-to-one support to improve the quality of life of anyone affected by breast cancer. After enjoying the home cooked breakfast the ladies headed out onto the championship Hawtree Course. With the backdrop of the stunning Regency House and the beautiful October sunshine, the ladies competed for some fantastic prizes. There were fundraising competitions throughout including prizes for nearest the pin, straightest drive and longest drive. No cheating or breaches in security were allowed as the “security guard” Archie, a little King Charles Spaniel, was on hand complete with his security guard vest and pink feather bower on his collar. The ‘Pink Ladies’ Carol Patterson and Carol Whiteley were also there to make sure speed of play was maintained.

8215 North Leeds League Gathers Pace The North Leeds 8215 league, a new initiative for golfers in the handicap bracket of 8 to 15 based in North Leeds Clubs, held its second event at Scarcroft Golf Club on Sunday the 22nd of October. Yorkshire and the North East Golf Guide, who are principle sponsors of the League, were delighted to see the teams have doubled since the last event at Cookridge with 10 8-man teams now getting involved. Ian Williamson, current Lions captain of Cookridge, commented, “We now have a firm foundation to build on and the right personnel and backing from clubs to really drive this forward and create the League in 2012,” - format to be announced.

Scarcroft, who won at Cookridge, offered to host the second event and did their club proud with Derek Fryer serving up good golf, good food and good banter. Wyke Ridge won the event with all team members securing themselves a place on next year’s Golf Guide Tour to parade their skills once again, plus many other prizes. The individual pair’s prize was won by Steve Clark and Tony Dearden from Horsforth, with a better ball score of 45. My golf wardrobe is filled with Nike Dri-Fit technology. It’s a long time since I put on a 100% cotton t-shirt and I really believe that Dri-Fit technology is the best for my game. Prior to Dri-Fit, it was always a case of cotton shirts sticking to you when you got hot and feeling heavy. The Dri-Fit shirts on the other hand are light weight. The technology was first developed for sprinters, but it’s properties transfer to golf too. It’s a moisture wicking fabric which quickly relieves any feeling of perspiration. What’s really great, is that Nike haven’t stopped just with shirts, this technology is present in their entire golf apparel range, from trousers, to base layers to socks.

I spend so much time out of doors as a full time teaching professional, in cooler times, I have to make sure I keep warm. I see many golfers layering up with t-shirts and sweaters and jackets. I’m amazed at the bulk they add to their body. Once they come to the driving range and start swinging, it’s clear that the layers are restricting. My advice would be to use a wind stopper jacket directly on top of your golf shirt. Many of the wind stoppers on the market are so effective you will really not feel any drop in temperature when you have them on. Better still, think about the bulk – or absence of it…simply (base layer, of it’s really cold), shirt and wind stopper. No bulk, no restriction equals great golf.

‘I cannot recommend highly enough Galvin Green base layers. Take a look at the newly released ‘Edge’ skin tight top. It’s designed for temperatures below 10 degrees, so in other words, most of the British Winter! Perhaps best of all, is that the Edge top has body mapping and compression panels which particularly focus on groups of muscles used for golf. Unlike other base layers, it is supposed to be very tight, as the compression helps stimulate blood flow around your body. For me it’s a must, keeping me warm, dry and supple during my round of golf in cold conditions.

The day started bathed in autumnal sunshine, luring many into a false sense of security. It was Paul Snowden of Moortown who led the way after the first round with a impressive round of 70, but with so many past champions only a couple of shots behind it was always going to be a tough lead to keep hold of. Midday saw the weather change and the clouds roll in, intermittent heavy rain soon followed.

The Moortown Masters has always been the climax to the Yorkshire Order of Merit season ever since its inception 14 years ago, in 1997. This year saw a hard fought battle to the end with double points on offer at the Masters as ever.

Despite toughening conditions a few still managed to return impressive scores, David Houlding (Moortown) held the early clubhouse lead on a 148 total, which was later matched by Bradley Hudson (Cookridge). The best round of the afternoon was returned by Dan Rowley (Shipley), his round of 70 saw him top the board on 145. However it was Matthew Daley (Hainsworth Park), who followed up his solid morning round of 72, with a great afternoon round of 71, to post a 143 total and be crowned the 2011 Moortown Masters Champion. Matthew joins the prestigious list of the Moortown Masters Champions which includes the likes of European Tour winners Simon Dyson and John Parry.

Daley started the event knowing only a win would give him a chance, a thought that Matthew Atter (Sandmoor) would surely share. However even with their impressive 1st and 3rd places respectively, their totals were not quite good enough to catch Fulfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jamie Miller (2010 Moortown Masters Champion) who finished in 4th place to claim enough points to take the 2011 Yorkshire Order of Merit Title.

From A1(M). Keep straight onto A1(M) / Aberford By Pass. Exit Dishforth Interchange, take ramp left for A168 toward Teesside / Thirsk. Road name changes to A192. At roundabout, take 3rd exit onto A1747. At roundabout, take 2nd exit onto A1053 / Greystone Road. At roundabout, take 3rd exit onto A1085 / Trunk Road. Pass through 2 roundabouts, remaining on A1085. Turn left onto Kirkleatham Lane. Turn left, and then immediately turn left onto Bridge Road. Road name changes to Majuba Road, Golf Club on road.

This Championship links course, is situated by the shores of the North Sea and measures 6750 yards from the white tees with a par 72. The Ladies play from red tees all the year round and their course measures 5545 yards with a par 73. The course itself is flat and easy to walk. It is protected by strategically placed bunkers both on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, and in common with many Championship links courses, it is a true test of golf when the wind blows. The club have hosted many County and Professional events and is the home to the

Amateur scratch competitions the Cleveland Salver and the Mid Amateur International. Signature Hole Hole 11, ‘Ridges’, Par 4, 429 yards (White Tee) Par 4 with a ridge to negotiate from the tee shot, fairly straight hole with a well guarded green. A water hazard is on the right side of the rough however it has to be a very wayward shot to catch it. Professionals Tip: Keep to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this will open the green up, for your second shot the middle of the green is always a good option, get to greedy and you may pay the consequences.

From the A64: Take the A19 junction towards York City centre. Travel through Fulford and turn right at the traffic lights signposted University / Fulford Golf Club. Take the right exit from the mini roundabout signposted Fulford Golf Club. The Golf Club is 200m on the right side of Heslington Lane.

The course was planned and constructed by Major Charles MacKenzie, the brother and business partner of the now legendary Dr Alistair MacKenzie who designed Augusta National and Cypress Point.

Regarded as one of the finest tests of inland golf, the course is frequently graded in the Top 100 and is built on predominantly sandy heathland, which drains exceptionally well and provides an excellent surface for all year round golf. The greens, which were voted ‘’best on the European Tour’’, remain consistent throughout the year, and the course drains well during the winter.

The course is flat and tree lined, with heather and well placed bunkers providing the hazards. The course is a good challenge for all golfers. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4. ‘Langer’ The line from the tee is down the left hand side of the fairway, possibly using a long iron to avoid running into the small trees. This allows an easy pitch over Germany Beck into the welcoming green. The approach from the right is blocked by a large oak requiring a high shot if you are to make the green. Watch out for the ash tree by the left side of the green made famous by Bernhard Langers ‘tree’ shot in 1981

Ganton is situated close to the A64, the main road between York and Scarborough. For SatNav users, the postcode is YO12 4PA. If you are travelling by car, the course is about 35 minutes drive on the A64 from York. If travelling by train, there is a regular service from York to nearby Malton, Seamer and Scarborough stations. York is on the East Coast mainline (London-Edinburgh) and offers regular direct services straight into Manchester International Airport.

The Scarborough Club, as it was originally called, opened for play in 1891, and was laid out by St Andrew’s Tom Chisholm. The great Harry Vardon became club professional in 1896, in the year of his first Open Title. Ganton is situated 9 miles from the sea in the Vale of Pickering, but was once a North Sea inlet, which is why many describe the course as an “inland links”. With a unique blend of links and heathland features, visitors need to be on their game to combat this sandy, gently undulating but testing championship course. Ganton has staged many prestigious amateur and professional golf events over the years.

It is one of only three courses in Britain to have staged the Ryder Cup (1949), the Curtis Cup (2000) and the Walker Cup (2003) and the quality of the course is reflected in the quality of some of the names on the Honours Board which include Joyce Wethered, Max Faulkner, Michael Bonallack, Bernard Gallacher, Peter McEvoy, Nick Faldo, Jose Maria Olazabal and Gary Wolstenholme. Whilst the last 4 holes may appear very pleasing on the eye, they are in combination one of the toughest finishing challenges in the country. In particular the very narrow par four 16th demands 2 very accurate shots to the green.

Located only 2 miles from the centre of the famous spa town, Harrogate Golf Club is a mature parkland course in a picturesque setting and benefits from spectacular floral displays in the Spring.

The course layout penalises any golfer who strays off the fairway, subtly placed bunkers and copses of trees require the golfer to adopt careful thought and accuracy in order to better the par.

The current course measures a little less than 6250 yards and is on fairly flat terrain. It is widely regarded as a fair test of golf, requiring accuracy rather than distance off the tee. Its Mackenzie style greens and tree-lined fairways provide an enjoyable challenge for all handicaps. The course is invariably presented in first class condition and many visiting parties come back year after year.

Signature Holes: Hole 12: A beautiful Par 3 designed by MacKenzie in 1910 and played from a raised multi level tee. The green is a tricky read for the most experienced golfer, yet it is the hole that registers the most holes-in-one each year. Hole 13: Set amidst one of the most scenic parts of the course, this long Par 4 is truly a pleasure to play.

Founded in 1908, Middlesbrough golf course was based at Saltersgill Farm until 1938, when it moved to its present location which was designed by James Braid (five times Open Champion), a renowned golf course architect who fully exploited the natural ravines and undulating land. The course was officially opened in April 1939 and in 1990, new holes were laid through acquired woodland to give it the layout as it is today. Situated in countryside five miles south of Middlesbrough the course has stunning views of the Cleveland Hills and is a joy to play as many have found, not least many of the

country’s top young players who arrive every year to play in the North of England Youths Open – a tournament started and run by the club themselves which has grown to attract national and international backing from the major golf bodies. From the A1 Northbound take the A684 turn off to Northallerton. Stay on the A684 and travel through the villages of Leeming Bar, Morton on Swale and Ainderby Steeple. A true gem for all visitors. Romanby nestles in North Yorkshire’s lush rolling landscape. It offers an uniquely challenging championship standard golf course - and everything that goes with it. Within easy driving distance of both Leeds and York, we are situated just outside of the village of Towton on the A162 which runs between Tadcaster and Sherburn-in-Elmet. For those traveling from further afield, Scarthingwell is located within 10 minutes drive of the A1M and M1 motorways.

An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. Each of the partners plays an active role in the day-to-day operation of the Golf Course and at least one partner is usually on-site at most times of the day.

The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Signature Holes You can enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside on this course but remember to pay as much attention to the 9th and 10th holes. The 9th is a tricky par-3 with an approach to a severely guarded green, whilst the 10th includes a dog leg and an approach over water.

01. How to Find From the M62: 4 miles from Junction 25. Exit onto Slip Road (M62 J25). At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Wakefield Road (A644) for 1.2 miles. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Leeds Road (A644) for 0.2 miles. Bear right onto Huddersfield Road (A644) for 2.4 miles. Turn right onto Steanard Lane (opposite the Ship Inn) for 0.2 miles. Turn left onto Sands Lane after the Ship Inn after 0.2 miles turn right into Dewsbury District Golf Club.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.

It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

From M62: Take J62 off M62 and join M606 to the end. Follow A6177 Ring Road East. At 3rd roundabout take the 1st exit onto A650 towards Bradford. Follow this road through to Shipley, turn right at the traffic lights onto the A6038. Continue on the A6038 for 3 miles travelling towards Baildon, at the traffic lights with the Junction Public House, do not turn left into Baildon, continue straight on and the hotel is located on the left hand side of Hollins Hall.

Hollins Hall Country Club has been the host venue for the PGA Europro Championship Tour. Tune up your swing before or after a round with the practice facilities at Hollins Hall Country Club, including a large putting green, short game area, and driving range with covered bays. Signature Hole: 14th, Par 4, ‘Viaduct’, 355 yards (white tee). The railway viaduct provides a stunning backdrop on the 14th hole, a testing drive down into the valley. Golfers must negotiate a stream, bunkers and a water hazard if they are to reach this green in regulation.

03. How to Find

Established in 1900 and named after the Elizabethan Mansion which stood adjacent to the 17th fairway Howley Hall is a hidden gem in central Yorkshire. Formerly heathland the course has been changed over the years and is now parkland with an abundance of trees to make you think about the game and where you want to play your next shot from. With a par of 71 and the standard scratch of 71 off white tees set over 6454 Yards it can be a quite testing but very enjoyable course. Positional play is rewarded at Howley Hall however there are plenty of hazards to ruin your card if you stray from the fairways.

Signature Holes: Hole 14, Par 3 Par 3 in the trees. Cross bunkers in front of the green, bunkers to each side, make accuracy a premium. A lovely hole both to look and to play. Hole 16, Par 5. One of the most picturesque and interesting holes on the course. Panoramic views from an exposed tee on this par 5, a blind second into the once terrace gardens of the old Hall, a tight third with the green guarded by a bunkers on both sides. Again a deep ditch follows the contour of the green.

From the East: Leave the M62 at junction 28. Take the A650 towards Bradford and Morley. Keep in the left hand lane and look out for the Mermaid Fish Restaurant on the left. Turn left at the next major set of traffic lights (Half way House). The entrance to the course is ¾ of a mile on the left. From the West: Leave the M62 at junction 27 (M621 Leeds). Stay in the left hand lane – Morley. Take the A650 towards Wakefield / Morley. Through the next major junction with the Toby carvery on the left. Turn right at the next traffic lights (Half Way House). The entrance to the course is approx ¾ of a mile on the left. Travelling from Leeds direction on A65, follow into Ilkley town centre until you reach the main crossroads in the centre of the town. Ilkley is one of the finest golf clubs in Yorkshire, both in terms of beauty and for an unforgettable round of golf. It boasts two former Ryder Cup captains as honorary life members, Colin Montgomerie, who learnt his golf at the club, and Mark James, who lives locally. With a number of holes designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the course is a real test whatever your handicap. For the first seven holes the river is ever present, with the second,

third and fourth holes being played onto and off an island. Moving inland the tree-lined fairways ensure the need for accurate drives and approaches. With the greens close to the tees and no deep rough you can complete the round relatively quickly enabling you to comfortably enjoy a couple of rounds in a day. John Hammond has been at the club for over 30 years and is one of the friendliest and most knowledgeable professionals in the county. His well-stocked shop always provides a few bargains too. The steward and stewardess, Michael and Meg Jarvis, can also provide a range of menus to cater for your party throughout the day.

05. How to Find From Skipton take the A629 to Keighley From Bradford take the A650 to Keighley

At the roundabout that connects these two roads, which is adjacent to Keighley Cougar RLFC, take the exit for the B6265 for Utley/Skipton. After 1/2 mile turn right into Birchwood Rd at the Roebuck PH. Turn left into Keelham lane as signposted to Keighley Golf Club in approx 1/2 mile.

Keighley’s course has been maturing and developing for over a century and today offers a thorough test for the most accomplished golfer and high-handicapper. Long par fours such as the 1st, 5th, 6th and 15th all require good length off the tee if the green is to be hit in regulation, and even then fairway woods and long irons are often needed to reach the target. Not that the par three holes offer an easy respite from a genuine test of skill and judgement. As early as the 2nd, the player needs to negotiate an intimidating, overhanging oak on the left and a series of devilish bunkers on the right - often into the prevailing wind

- while the 16th requires good length and pinpoint accuracy, as its stroke index of 8 confirms. Keighley is a course on which the skills of three Yorkshire Champions - Arnold Fell (1931), Roger Mitchell (1975) and Phil Wood (1990/94) - have been honed and tempered. It is perhaps a measure of the course that Wood should elect the par-four 17th - stroke index 6 - as his favourite hole and nominate it as ‘one of the most difficult and dangerous finishing holes in Yorkshire golf’. 06. How to Find

Our 18-hole parkland course is situated on the north side of Leeds and is one of the best golf clubs in Yorkshire. Founded in 1896 it is the original home of the Leeds Cup, the oldest trophy in professional golf. Set in approximately 80 acres, our stunning course challenges golfers of all ages and abilities. Only four miles from the city centre and close to the Leeds Ring Road, the course has a distinctly tranquil feel with many of the holes commanding spectacular views of Roundhay. Leeds Golf Club offers something for everyone - men, women, seniors and juniors, from experienced players to those who have

Moor Allerton

From Leeds: (5 miles) Take the A61 Harrogate Road. About 1 mile past the intersection with the A6120 ringroad, turn right at the traffic lights into Wigton Lane. At the end turn left, then take the first right (Tarn Lane) to the cross roads, turn left. After 200 yards, the Clubhouse is on the right.

Moor Allerton is the first golf course designed in the UK by the famous American architect Robert Trent Jones and as such is typical of his work. (His other courses include Spyglass Hill, Hazeltine and Sotogrande). The Trent Jones trade marks of shallow bunkers, huge teeing grounds, lakes and large contoured greens are all evident with three loops of nine holes, that all start and finish at the Clubhouse. Set in a mighty 220 acres of undulating Yorkshire Countryside with streams and lakes to add a little spice, Moor Allerton is a picturebook golf course. Every hole presents its own particular challenge to all levels of golfer.

A number of major national and international events have been played at the Club with many world class players having competed including Seve Ballesteros, Tom Weiskopf, Tony Jacklin, Gary Player and Greg Norman. Hole 14, Par 5: Tough driving hole with three lakes down the left and gorse to the right. Drive as close to the right as you dare. Second to landing area over third lake. Pitch to L-shaped green with water in front and two bunkers behind. Hole 17, Par 3: Stunning hole over water. Wooden fence will help catch those balls hit long. Moortown

Entrance to the club is immediately after the Shell Petrol Station on A61 (Leeds to Harrogate) about ½ mile north of A6120 between Primley Park View & Sandmoor Lane. Travelling south on A61 make U-turn immediately past Petrol Station located on right hand side of dual carriageway about ½ mile south of Leeds Grammar School. On entry & exit please call the office to open the security barrier.

The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.

The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

Leave Leeds on A58 Wetherby Road, then turn left at the Bracken Fox Pub, Scarcroft Golf Club is ½ mile along Syke Lane from the Bracken Fox.

Established in 1937, and designed by Charles Mackenzie, this gloriously undulating course with its rich variety of mature trees and spacious fairways is set in spectacular wooded parkland in the idyllic countryside north of Leeds. It was chosen as this year’s venue for the English Golf Union Champion Club Final. A challenging test for both the professional and enthusiastic amateur alike, the magnificent 6,456 yard par 71 course regularly plays host to a number of prestigious golfing events including county matches of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs, as well as English Ladies Golf Association tournaments. The names of

many of the holes reflect the natural beauty of the rural setting starting with the formidable opener, the Jubilee Oak, and continuing with Badger’s Wood, Hawthorns, Poplars and Forest Hill to name just a few. But don’t be fooled by their rustic charm and the undeniable beauty of the peaceful surroundings. Because, whilst there are few more delightful courses in the whole of Yorkshire, it can still spring a surprise for the seasoned pro as the aptly named Witches Green suggests. Signature Hole: 14th ‘Dogleg’, Par 5, 484 yards A good long tee shot is required to the dogleg if you want to reach the green in two.

SHIPLEY

Travelling from Bradford: Exit the M62 at the M606 junction. Follow the M606 until the end. Take the A650 towards Shipley, Keighley and Skipton. Go through Shipley and Saltaire still heading towards Bingley, Keighley and Skipton. Keep straight on following signs to Wilsden/Cottingley (B6265). At the traffic lights after the roundabout keep in the right hand lane following signs to Bingley. After about ¼ mile, pass Kiddicreche Nursery on the left. Just after this turn left on to Beckfoot Lane. The Golf Club entrance is 200 yards on the left. Set amidst a wonderful wooded valley on the outskirts of Bingley, the course is the creation of the renowned architect Dr Alister Mackenzie of Augusta fame. Stretching across the rolling valley floor of Beckfoot this traditional parkland, visually stunning course provides golfers of any standard with a test of their skill and accuracy.

Unusually for a course of this standard there are six Par 3 holes, one of which, the 7th, is the Course’s signature hole. This is a testing downhill hole with the babbling Harden Beck both to the left and rear of the small green ready to engulf the errant shot. Seven tough Par 4’s and 5 medium Par 5’s make up the rest of the challenge with mature Birch and Oak trees lining the fairways, and several ditches and ponds to test the shot makers skill.

From the M62 Leave motorway at Junction 25 and take A644 to Brighouse. Take first right turn (across dual carriageway) to Clifton. At junction (by Black Horse Inn) turn left; then right at next junction (by Armitage Arms). Willow Valley Golf is approximately ½ mile on the right. Distance from motorway is approximately 2 miles.

The large, undulating U.S.G.A greens have been designed to allow players to run the ball onto them rather than having to fly the ball through the air. This allows the more imaginative golfers to play a wide variety of approach shots to the flag. There is much less emphasis on the golfer’s ability to get the ball airborne for long distances and is therefore less punishing for the beginner.

There are lakes and bunkers, though they are placed to catch the very wayward shot, leaving a much greater margin for error in comparison to our Willow Valley Course. Signature Holes Willow Valley Course - Hole 14 - Hitting the fairway makes the approach to this island green easier! The green is below the level of the fairway, but this hole usually plays into wind Pine Valley Course - Hole 6 - A “risk and reward” par 4 with a green which can be driven from the tee, though water lurks to catch the ball which doesn’t carry the full distance.

East Yorkshire East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. From the West via M62/A63: After Junction 38 the M62 becomes a dual carriageway, the A63, approximately 3 miles after this change exit left signed South Cave, Market Weighton and Beverley. At the T junction turn right following local signs for Brough. Carry on to a roundabout take the 3rd exit towards Brough and Elloughton continue to the next roundabout and take the 2nd exit into Cave Road, signed Brough Aircraft Factory. Brough Golf Club is a mile along this road on your left hand side.

tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers. Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

Following the recent addition of Skidby Lakes to the Cottingham Leisure Limited portfolio, the course and has recently undergone a major tree planting programme. Officially opened in June 2000 by cricket legend Sir Ian Botham, this 18-hole par 70 (sss 70) parkland course measures 6158 yards from the White tees. The scenic views across the course give a pleasing backdrop to this pleasant, maturing course where, as it’s name would suggest, water is the main feature, coming into play on no less than seven holes.

Offered as an option in the Cottingham Parks Golf and Leisure Sunday breaks package, the Skidby course although shorter, presents an equally pleasant and challenging test and is, like Cottingham Parks, and ideal venue for that day out or short break. Signature Hole: The signature hole is the 10th. Measuring 363 yards, the fairway slopes from left to right towards the stream that runs through the course. The further left you go, ‘the safe tee shot’, the more you have to play your 2nd shot over the water to an elevated green.

Driffield Golf Club is located on A164 Driffield to Beverley Road approximately 1 mile out of Driffield. Turn opposite the brown Golf Club sign. Proceed down a short private road and bear right into large parking area.

Driffield Golf Club lies just south of the town and is easily accessible from Hull, York and the coastal resorts of East Yorkshire. The course is in a tranquil setting in the Sunderlandwick estate which contains many beautiful trees, shrubs and wildlife. The Eastburn Beck, which runs through the middle of the estate, is a particular feature. The course is predominantly flat and is not physically demanding. Although easy to play, all 18 holes demand accuracy to achieve a low score. The course is a true test of golf for both high and low handicap players. The club is popular for corporate days

and club outings. It also hosts regular East Riding and Yorkshire Union events. The dining room can be booked for private functions and meetings. A classic James Braid test laid out in 1921, Hull Golf Club provides a tough start and finish. You will enjoy spectacular views over the City of Hull, Humber Estuary and the magnificent Humber Bridge. The par 70 layout measures less than 6300 yards from the back tees tees, despite recent innovations in club and ball technology, John Dockar’s course record of 64 remained intact for a quarter of a century before being bettered by one shot in 2010. The tight tree-lined fairways punish any wayward shot and the classic Braid bunkering makes club selection difficult for approach shots. Even after a solid drive and precision approach, a

par is not guaranteed as the fast, subtle greens present a challenge to even the best of putters. Hull’s feature hole is the 10th which has seen anything from a one to a 15 recorded over the years. A driveable downhill par 4 with a picturesque pond eating into the right and front of the green make this the ultimate risk and reward hole. Mid-irons off the tee will usually leave only a wedge in, but those taking driver can expect an eagle putt, a watery grave or, worse still, three off the tee with out of bounds hugging the right hand side of the fairway. You could, course, simply admire the beautiful fountains donated by the Seniors Section!

Dore and Totley is a private members golf club founded in 1913. Situated in the Sheffield suburb of Bradway its name is derived from a time when the playing of golf in the Sheffield Union was prohibited on a Sunday. A dedicated group of golfers formed the club to continue playing, but named it after the local railway station, trains being the best means of travelling beyond the city limits at this time. The mature parkland course is probably the least undulating, within the Sheffield area, with its subtle features making it an excellent course for golfers of all levels who will need to play well to achieve a low score.

We pride ourselves on the fact that we can offer an interesting and challenging round of golf, to players of all levels from novices to professionals, on a course that blends beautifully into the surrounding countryside. We have a total of 23 playable holes giving 2 options of 18 holes dependent on weather conditions and operate an always open policy. May 2005 saw the latest significant development of the course with 5 completely new holes added and the redesign of the remaining holes to give the current yardage of 6763 yards (white tees) and a par of 72. Lindrick is considered one of Britain’s finest inland courses - but it is unusual in that it finishes with a par three, albeit a great one. Lindrick is always remembered because it was there that Great Britain and Ireland beat the USA to win the 1957 Ryder Cup after a gap of 24 years. The Cup remained firmly in the grasp of the USA after that until 1985 when Europe won at the Belfry.

03. How to Find

Renishaw PARK

Seven Miles south-east of Sheffield. The Club is located approximately 2 miles from M1 junction 30 on the A6135 towards Sheffield.

A round of golf at Renishaw Park is definitely a game of two halves. From the Clubhouse there is a short walk across a footbridge over the railway and the A6135 to the 1st tee of the par 71, 6134 yard parkland course set adjacent to Renishaw Hall, which is the backdrop for the front 9 holes. Crossing back over the road there is the back 9 holes, set between the A6135 and the river Rother. The first nine, with its six par 4’s and three par 3’s is rolling parkland where use of the driver requires good accuracy. Second shots to most par 4’s need to be carefully placed especially on the 3rd and 6th where pin positions can be very

tricky. The hole you will always remember is the 9th with its uphill narrow fairway cut across the side of the hill with mature trees on both sides. The second nine is flat and more open with four par 5’s, two par 3’s and three par 4’s. Use of the driver is a must on the longer holes but beware the rough if you stray too far out of line! The par 3 17th is an interesting hole, only 123 yards off the white markers, but shooting to a raised green with bunkers on both sides and a narrow gap between trees. Renishaw Park has been well known for a number of years now for the quality of its greens which are fast and true, some of the best in the area.

Tankersley Park Golf Club is next to the M1 motorway between junction 36 and 35A   From the North M1 take exit 36 and follow signs for A61 to Sheffield. At the next roundabout turn left and the entrance to TPGC is half a mile on the left opposite the BRAUN factory and is signposted. If you miss junction 36, take the next exit at junction 35 and turn back northwards on the M1 to junction 35A.

Play Blyth and you’ll realise that there are some things in life that are still great value for money. Pound for pound the 6,400 yard 18 hole course on the outskirts of the seaport town in Northumberland has got to be the best days sport you’ll find for your hard earned cash. Developed on land where once stood a Pit Head and its entire mining community, Blyth has matured and developed into a tree lined parkland course with a par of 72- but don’t be fooled by its gently undulating character. Its first six holes are a test for any golfer and negotiate them without dropping too many shots and you can be set up for a good score.

But beware – there are some cunning water hazards on 9, 12, 13, and 14 that demand a strong nerve and a sure stroke. They don’t call the 13th “Sinkers” for nothing! Designed by the world famous architect Harry Colt in 1924 and laid out on what was Brancepeth Castle Deer Park, the stables and coach house being converted into the clubhouse. Harry Colt was involved in designing or redesigning over 300 courses around the world, including Moor Park, Wentworth and Pine Valley (NJ). Brancepeth is a beautiful parkland course of 6400 yards SSS70 offering a great variation of holes. The deep ravine cutting through the course, provides some challenging tee shots. We are pleased to have been recognised as one of the top 100 courses in Britain and

Ireland and one of the finest in the North East. The club has played host to the final of the English County Championships and the English Northern Ladies Amateur Championships. Hole 9, Par 3. This is the signature hole of Brancepeth Castle Golf Course. Like the 2nd, the green at the 9th was cut out of the hillside. The tee shot of about 200 yards is played along the length of a narrow green which slopes away from the tee. Having hit what is a very difficult target the player may be faced with a downhill putt on a green which is incredibly fast. Once described by an American golf magazine as the hardest 9th hole in the world.

Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James was part of the design team that developed the course in 1994, which has been constantly improved over the years. Since 2001 the course has been under the ownership of Irish businessmen, John Fallon and William Kiely. Their long term commitment to the course has been evidenced by the ongoing ten year improvement plan.

It has panoramic views of Simonside hills to the West and the coast to the East. The course in beautiful rolling countryside provides a challenging round for all abilities, playing off the championship tees measuring 7065 yards, the medal tees at 6804 yards and the leisure tees at 6403 yards. The maturing parklands with water hazards, is both beautiful and tranquil and includes some of the finest greens in the region. Our signature hole is the par 4, 18th. At 463 yds off the white tees an accurate drive is essential to avoid the ditch which runs down and across the fairway. The second is a downhill shot to a two tier green well guarded by bunkers.

From the West: Driving East towards Newcastle leave A69 at exit marked Horsley (B6528). Go through the village of Horsley and remain on the B6528 for 3 miles until you see signs for Close House on the left. Drive down the lane on the right, following the signs for Close House.

From the South: From the A1/A69 roundabout to Close House is approximately 7 miles. Follow the A69 west for 4 miles until the junction marked Heddon on the Wall B6528. Go through Heddon on the Wall and continue on the B6528 for 2 miles until you see Close House signed on the left hand side. Follow the signs from then on.

Turn off on A195 sign posted Washington North. Take last exit off roundabout for Washington. Turn right at mini-roundabout. The hotel is .5 mile on the right hand side.

Facilities There aren’t many who can match what’s on offer at the Mercure George Washington Hotel Golf and Spa. A par 73 18 hole championship golf course measuring 6,625 yards off the back tees. With tree lined, wide fairways plus a seven hole par three academy course and 20 bay floodlit driving range. Add to that a newly built golf clubhouse with lounge bar, golf shop, locker and changing facilities, a spacious function room and, if you want to stay over, a 103 bedroom hotel which offers stay and play golf packages.

Signature Hole: Hole 6, Par 4 The start of three tricky par fours. At 352 yards, the big hitters will fancy it but there is loads of trouble with a ditch crossing the fairway at about 280 yards from the back tees so any attempt would have to be all carry and the fairway also narrows appreciably with lots of trees on the left and a stand of trees along the ditch line on the right and there are two front bunkers on what is a two-tier quite long green. Most will settle for a lay up short of the ditch, although there is also a slope to take into consideration, and a second shot of around 150-160 yards.

Longhirst golf, known for having a beautiful relaxed setting, has an alluring layout with nice country views and undulating greens that add character to the golf courses. Scenic lakes, elevated tees and well placed bunkers provide interesting features that contribute to its excitement. Course conditions are known for being some of the best in Northumberland. Longhirst Hall Golf Course was opened in June 1997. This layout now plays as The Old Course, with full spec winter greens if required. It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive

downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. If heading north or south on the A1 take the A69 signposted Hexham and Carlisle. Exit the A69 at Heddon on the Wall and pick up the B6318, just before the Three Tuns public house, heading west towards Chollerford. Continue on the B6318 for seven miles, the turning to Matfen is on the right.

Set in 300 acres of mature parkland with established burns and woodland, Matfen Hall’s 27 hole course is a rated as one of the finest in the region. The course is an enjoyable test for players of all abilities and incorporates challenging features from the dry stone ‘ha-ha’ to the fast flowing river Pont. Although the course is easily walked, buggies are available for hire during the main season. Visitors to the area are welcome to hire clubs and a trolley. Boasting a covered driving range and putting green, members and guests are

invited to brush-up on their technique before a game or simply enjoy these facilities throughout the year. Matfen’s high quality nine hole par three course is ideal for the less experienced player. Tyneside Golf Club is the oldest inland club in the North East of England; formed in 1879 and still regarded as among the finest parkland courses in the region. It’s not only our history that we are proud of. We boast a challenging though enjoyable 18 hole layout which is renowned for the quality of its greens and which resists the elements remarkably well. Perched on the “Falls” of old Ryton Village, our club is tucked away in peaceful surroundings, a short drive from Newcastle City Centre and Newcastle International Airport. Our somewhat “secret” location has not prevented the club’s reputation spreading far beyond the banks of the River Tyne.

Our course is one of the most highly rated in the North East of England. This is not only because of its layout and condition, but also because it drains so freely and is available for play when other courses have to close. The course also winters remarkably well and we rarely use temporary greens. Hole 13, “The Coffin”, Par 4, 410 yards The signature hole of the course. A good drive to the left half of the fairway leaves a difficult second shot (as the bottom of the flag is not always visible) to the coffin shaped green that is well guarded on the left side by a number of bunkers. A par is an excellent result on this hole.

By road from North and South A1: Exit at A69 follow signs for Hexham 8 – 10 miles. At Brocksbushes roundabout take 1st exit onto A68 after a mile take 1st exit at Broomhaugh roundabout onto A695.Continue through Stocksfield approximately 3 miles, turn right onto New Ridley Road, Golf Club 1 ½ miles on Left Hand side.

Established in 1913, the Stocksfield golf club offers a course neatly tucked away in natural woodland with marvellous views of the Tyne Valley. This idyllic setting - only 30 minutes drive from Newcastle - makes the perfect setting for this golf course, a challenging, eighteen-hole, par 70 beauty. It combines tricky par 3s and tough par 4s to create a truly testing round. It is often said that Stocksfield is two courses in one. The first half is all played in fairways lined with native British Oaks, and Birches offering shelter from the breeze but a tough challenge requiring accurate play.

The second half is more open encouraging the golfer to open their shoulders and let loose... but there are still troubles ahead if you don’t keep it on the fairway! Signature Hole Hole 17, Par 4, 420 yards (Yellow Tee) A great par 4 with a dog-leg to the left. Your best line is at the big Oak at the end of the fairway. Taking it further left gives a shorter approach but brings the bunkers and the fir trees into play. The downhill second shot will roll up the front banking of the green in dry conditions, but don’t be too far left as bunker, slope, rough and trees await.

Costa del Sol Spain

The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.

In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.
