Welcome to The Golf Guide The Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide has been brought to you by Golf Guide Publications Limited, who publish Guides in the UK and the Costa del Sol. This formula has worked for many years in Spain and is proving to be a similar success story in the North West & Cumbria, Ireland, Yorkshire & North East and more recently the South Central Golf Guide. This quarterly Guide contains reviews of Golf Clubs, local and international golf news and special golf promotions. Each issue has in-depth Golf Club editorials describing the courses, the facilities on offer, signature holes and detailed directions. These editorials are a chance for clubs to highlight themselves and detail any offers and promotions they are running during that period. The Guide is split into five areas; North, West, South, East Yorkshire & Humberside and the North East. These areas are color coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found. A full golf course listing is featured in the Guide containing the phone number and website of every golf course in Yorkshire and the North East. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers at every level; societies, club golfers, beginners and professionals.

Hole 1 - Copse Corner 392 yards Par 4 Stroke index 9 The opening hole runs eastwards to the sea. The copse is one of the few groups of trees on the course, and lies at the elbow of a left to right dog-leg.The second shot is to an elevated green guarded by a mound and bunker on the front left side. Hole 2 - Crater 163 yards Par 3 Stroke Index 17 North facing, this short hole requires a shot to clear the large grassy depression in front of the green which gives the hole its name. Only one

greenside bunker on the back left is there to catch the pulled shot. Hole 3 - Sheiling 437 yards Par 4 Stroke Index 13 From an elevated tee this hole requires a drive close to a bunker and mound before turning right towards the green which has a front right greenside bunker and a grassy dell which gathers the off-line approach to the left side. Hole 4 - Stile 545 yards Par 5 Stroke index 5 A strong par 5, there are bunkers on the right

side to catch the errant drive, playing your second shot to the left of the fairway affords the best line into this small and narrow green. The stile is no longer present. A fence used to cross the course at this point. Hole 5 - Pennicks Way 418 yards Par 4 Stroke Index 1 Named after Frank Pennick golf architect who modified the course, this par 4 plays longer than its yardage as it turns slightly left uphill after the drive, towards a green that slopes from front to back and has a narrow entrance.

Hole 6 - Cocklaw 528 yards Par 5 Stroke Index 15 There is an out-of-bounds fence that runs along the right side, and the fairway tends to throw the drive to the rough on the left . The second shot has to avoid two fairway before the approach shot to an elevated green, bunkered on the left and out-of-bounds behind & right. Hole 7 - Valley 388 yards Par 4 Stroke Index 7 There is a high ridge right of this fairway with

often fierce rough to avoid and a smaller ridge on the left side. The green is elevated and well guarded by a large mound front left, and four bunkers on the left side. The green is on two levels and longer than you might think. Hole 8 - Cheswick 421 yards Par 4 Stroke Index 3 Named after the farm just north of the hole. Driving to the right hand side gives you the best approach to this hole.Aim for the right hand side of the green with your second shot.

Hole 9 - Cheviot View 199 yards, Par 3 Stroke Index 11 Looking towards the cheviots, this par 3 has out-of-bounds down the right along with a copse of trees. There are three greenside bunkers and small mounds around the left of the green. Hole 10 - Langwhang 421 yards Par 4 Stroke Index 2 The drive has to avoid a left side fairway bunker, and the approach must carry a bunker well short of the green, which encroaches from the right. A

Hole 13 - Lough 200 yards Par 3 Stroke Index 16 From an elevated tee you can just see the small river which gives its name to the hole. The green rises from front to back and is protected by bunkers on both sides. Additionally there is a crossbunker short of the green which needs to be carried to reach the putting surface. Hole 14 - Dune 393 yards Par 4 Stroke Index 4 There is one fairway bunker on the right side, and the fairway turns slightly right and uphill to a green lying at the base of the dunes which is largely hidden from the drive. Watch out for a small pot bunker at the front left of the green. Hole 15 - Bide A Wee 150 yds Par 3 Stroke Index 14 Elevated Tee to a bowl shaped green which is protected by five bunkers. A shot that is too strong will go into a grassy depression three feet below the green at the back. Hole 16 - Dowie 431 yds Par 4 Stroke Index 12 Tee shot is fairly straightforward. There is a ridge that runs halfway accross the fairway from the right. Once past the ridge, the approach is relatively simple with only two bunkers protecting the green.

small bunker lies at the front left side. The green may be difficult to hold if the ground conditions are fiery. Hole 11 - Goswick 559 yards, Par 5 Stroke Index 8 Out of bounds down the right. A ridge lies at driving distance running lengthwise. There is a crossbunker about 70 yards from the green. and three further bunkers, one just short and left, and two at the green.

Hole 12 - Pilgrims Way 367 yards Par 4 Stroke Index 6 In the distance is the Holy Island but your concern is to drive to a fairway which lies obliquely to the tee, and lies on a bank beyond a drainage ditch. The green is hidden by a ridge, and unless your ball lies on the extreme left of the fairway, not too far from the green, you face a blind second shot. There are no bunkers on this hole.

Hole 17 - Stonehenge 522 yds Par 5 Stroke Index 10 Three deep crossbunkers await the big hitters at 300 yards. The green lies behind a gravel road. Three greenside and two fairway bunkers need to be avoided on your approach shot. Hole 18 - Westward Ho 269 yds Par 4 Stroke Index 18 A short par 4 where your tee shot should leave you with a relatively short shot to the green. Cross bunkers just short make it difficult to hit with your drive and a further 4 bunkers protect the green.

Callaway Golf FT Optiforce Callaway Golf has introduced two innovative products designed to to maximise clubhead speed and increase ball speed for distance gains, its FT Optiforce™ Driver and Fairway Woods.

The new clubs debut several new and systematically-designed technologies to help increase a golfer’s clubhead speed, ball speed and thus overall distance. The FT Optiforce Driver will – in a first from Callaway – offer loft and lie adjustability to optimise launch conditions. In a distinct approach, Callaway is launching two variations of the FT Optiforce Driver clubhead to help golfers find their optimal performance. “Callaway has always placed the golfer’s performance first when developing clubs and we feel strongly that one club head does not fit all golfers,” said Dr. Alan Hocknell, SVP, Research & Development, Callaway Golf. “Players using an 8.5-degree driver are fundamentally different than players using 12.5-degrees of loft, so with the FT Optiforce Driver we have optimised each of the two available heads -- the 440cc and the 460cc – and adjusted critical elements like size, weight, centre of gravity position,

moment of inertia and others so that golfers have the best chance to optimise their launch conditions for better total performance.” The four primary technologies that merge to generate the speed and performance advantages of Callaway’s new drivers are outlined below: Aerodynamic Efficiency The FT Optiforce driver was born from an aggressively aerodynamic prototype that Callaway tested while exploring the complex variations in aerodynamic flow during a driver’s entire downswing. As a result, the FT Optiforce driver – based on its shape and construction - is tops among the fastest and most aerodynamically efficient driver Callaway has ever brought to market, leading to increases in clubhead speed. The FT Optiforce has been measured with 23 percent less drag than a conventionally shaped driver.*

Fast Configuration Also contributing to advances in clubhead speed is the overall configuration of the driver, including the use of lightweight Forged Composite™ in the crown and two stock shaft offerings that can enhance a golfer’s ability to deliver the club to the ball faster. The primary stock shaft is a 43-gram Project X Velocity shaft, the lightest shaft Callaway has ever included in a standard driver offering. The secondary stock shaft is a 62-gram Mitsubishi Diamana S+. The overall construction of the new driver is under 300 grams. Advanced OptiFit Adjustability The FT Optiforce Driver will debut an innovative loft and lie adjustability solution. The driver features an Advanced OptiFit® Hosel that allows players to adjust the driver’s loft 1-degree down or 1- or 2-degrees up. The loft setting helps golfers adjust their launch

angle and amount of backspin, while the lie -- selected with the neutral or draw settings also contained within the hosel -- will help golfers adjust side angle and sidespin. Coupled with the differences in the 440cc and 460cc heads, golfers of all abilities can use the simple adjustability solution in the FT Optiforce to find their optimal launch conditions and ball flight. Speed Frame Face Technology The additional clubhead speed in FT Optiforce generated by the aerodynamic shape and the overall configuration is then transferred to ball speed at impact with the driver face. Implemented with much success in the other 2013 Callaway drivers, the Speed Frame Face Technology found in FT Optiforce distributes stress across the titanium face for a larger, more consistent sweet spot and increased ball speed. The Speed Frame Face also saves weight that is redistributed in the clubhead to improve the

CG position and maximise MOI, which leads to optimised ball flight and forgiveness. Also available this month, the full line-up of FT Optiforce Fairway Woods share similar construction to the wildly popular Callaway X Hot Fairway Woods, including the blazing ball speeds the woods have become known for. The key differentiator for this series of fairway woods, available as a 3-, 4- 5-, 7- and 9-wood, is the higher trajectory golfers are likely to experience. “The FT Optiforce Fairways Woods are a powerful mix of the ball speeds of our X Hot Fairway woods and the trajectory of our RAZR Fit Xtreme Fairway Wood,” said Hocknell. The new fairway woods have a Forged Speed Frame Face Cup made of high strength Carpenter 455 stainless steel that produces significantly hotter responses all across the

face. The optimised centre of gravity (CG) in the fairway wood, accomplished in part through a proprietary design called the Internal Standing Wave, delivers a higher launch with slightly more spin than the X Hot Fairway Wood, resulting in consistent distances from everywhere on the course -- the tee, fairway or rough. The FT Optiforce Fairway Woods have a higher MOI as well, which contributes to the forgiveness and consistency that make these clubs easy to hit. A roller coaster year is the way Charlotte describes her first year as a professional on the Access tour and LET tours. The early season saw a few missed cuts in difficult weather conditions but this all changed in Paris at the Fourqeaux Golf Club when Charlotte finished tied second courtesy of a final round 67 that included 7 birdies, this earned Charlotte her biggest pay cheque to date as a professional made even better as the joint runner up was an Amateur who couldn’t collect the prize fund . The performance in Paris earned Charlotte two starts on the main LET Tour, her first start was in the European Masters at The Buckinghamshire where she just missed out making the cut by two shots. Two weeks later at the Pilsen Masters in the Czech Republic Charlotte made her first cut on the main tour, another step forward in her golfing education. Disappointment then followed in Sweden back on the Access Tour, after leading for

the first 2 rounds terrible weather and some bad luck meant a finish in 18th place! Although disappointed Charlotte looked upon it as another learning curve and will use the experience in a positive way. Six cuts made in a row has really boosted Charlottes confidence in her game, expectation is high and the maiden professional victory surely isn’t far away. Charlotte’s main task now is to remain inside the top 20 on the Access Tour Order of Merit, that will mean she will avoid the first stage of Q School, with three events left and her game in good shape that looks well within her reach. Crown Golf Attracts women into golf at Ideal Home Show Leading golf club operator Crown Golf was looking to convince more women to give golf a try, at the Ideal Home Show At Christmas. Its flyer ‘8 Reasons Why Women Should Play Golf’ was distributed at the show at Earls Court in London. The flyer invited women to visit a Crown Golf club for a free trial golf lesson called ‘Start To Play’, and directed them to fill in an enquiry form at a new website www.starttoplay.co.uk/womenandgolf. Among the 8 Reasons identified by the company are Exercise, Socialising, Clothing, Learning & Competing and Travel. “The average golfer can burn 1500 calories playing 18 holes of golf” said Hannah Baker, Crown Golf Marketing Manager. “That fact alone strikes a chord with many potential female golfers, and the health message is one of the two biggest draws we have in this sport. The other – golf’s social aspects – is the other most frequently-quoted reason why more and more women are taking up golf. “Our flyer also talks how there are 35,000 golf courses to be discovered in the world;

about the great fashions which female golfers enjoy wearing; and also how the sporting aspects of golf can provide great satisfaction, among other things.” Although there are over 3,000 golf clubs in the UK, currently less than one in seven of the country’s golfers are female. Jo Oliver, former Ladies European Tour player and currently PGA Professional at Chesfield Downs G&CC in Hertfordshire, says: “There are millions of potential female golfers out there, waiting to be inspired. It works best when a small group of friends starts learning to play golf together - that creates good momentum and they spur each other on to improve. Like riding a bike or swimming, hitting a golf ball is a skill for life which you never forget, and I have taught women as old as 84, and as young as six here at the club. Most Crown Golf clubs have a higher-thanaverage percentage of lady members; some clubs such as Milford and St Mellion have a female membership of almost 25%, approaching twice the national average. At

other clubs such as Mill Green, Chesfield Downs, Batchworth Park and South Winchester, almost one in five members are female. Crown Golf Lady Captains Linda Miles, Elaine Marshall and Linda Clark give revealing insights into why they think their club attracts a high number of female golfers. “People can sense the atmosphere as soon as they walk into a club” said Linda Clark, 2013 Lady Captain at Mill Green GC. “People hear that our club is genuinely friendly and barrier-free, and they come to investigate. “Our female members appreciate the number of events we run for them” says 2013 St Mellion International Resort Lady Captain, Elaine Marshall. “We have a very active ladies’ calendar, from social 9-holers to the big events. We hold ladies’ events at the weekends too, as many of our members have full-time jobs. Our new Pro, Jason Avery, has been very proactive and successful in helping our ladies lower their handicaps, and we make sure that our communications to female members are regular and comprehensive.”

Henrik Stenson Success boosts Ryder Cup hopes

Henrik Stenson almost doubled his career earnings on the US PGA Tour in one tournament in September, holding his nerve to become the first European winner of both the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title. The 37 year old Swede, who had won just over $13,000,000 before arriving in Atlanta, carded a final round of 68 at East Lake to win by three shots from Jordan Spieth and Steve Stricker and claim the first prize of $1,400,000, plus a $10,000,000 FedEx Cup bonus. European Ryder Cup World Points List, having completed a remarkable renaissance over the past 12 months. Stenson dropped as low as 230th in February 2012 as he struggled with his game and health, but after winning the South African Open Championship at the tail-end of the last season, his subsequent rise has been a meteoric one during the current campaign. A share of third place in the Aberdeen asset Management Scottish Open was followed up by runner-up finishes in The Open Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, third place in the US PGA Championship and victory in the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The 37 year old is back up to fourth on the latest Official World Golf Ranking – equalling his career high – and tops the

Stenson last played for Europe in The 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club, memorably partnering Oliver Wilson in a gusty fightback to defeat Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim 2 & 1 in Foursomes. But it was his debut appearance against the United States in 2006 that is etched in Ryder Cup folklore. Stenson holed the winning putt for Europe at The K Club in Ireland, defeating Vaughn Taylor 4 & 3, as Ian Woosnam’s team sealed a record-equalling 18½-9½ victory. Stenson led the World Points List in qualifying for that contest, and former Masters Champion Woosnam has backed him to be an important part of the European team again at Gleneagles next year. “I’m just glad to see him playing so well again,” said Woosnam. “He had a difficult time, but he has got a great attitude and it is great to see him back playing so well. He is such a strong player and has such a strong mind. “The last two months he has played fantastic. He is definitely the hottest player on Tour at the moment. When you have as much confidence as he does at the moment, the sky is the limit for him. “I was certainly pleased to have him on my team in 2006 and he would be great again next year if he makes it. 92 golfers took to the fairways at Cookridge Hall to compete in the annual charity Pro Am. Launched in 2005 by Cookridge Hall General Manager Gary Day the event has raised thousands for local charities including the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Since then the club has for the past four years supported Ward L42 at Leeds General Infirmary a ward specialising in high dependency cases in children.

We may have been blessed with mild weather so far this autumn but we all know that the good golfing weather is behind us and won’t be back for a while. One North East golf club have prepared themselves for the cold spell and the likelihood of course closures when the wet weather comes.

Our resident club caterers, offer a fantastic selection of food which can be tailored to your requirements, complemented with a great selection of alcoholic and soft drinks from our bar all at very competitive prices! The aim this year was to break the £10,000 barrier, in monies raised for the ward. With thanks to all our supporters we received some terrific items to auction including Danny Maguire, a close friend of Cookridge, who donated a signed shirt from his testimonial game earlier this year which raised a magnificent £500.00. Following the auction and on course challenges over £2900 was raised. Earlier this year Cookridge Hall set out to find Super Leagues Best Golfer with the help of Super League star Richard Mathers. With monies raised at this event took the annual total to in excess of £5800 taking the overall total in four year to £12612.00. Next year see’s the club celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Pro Am and with many special plans in place teams have already entered in what is sure to prove a great golfing event.

George Washington Golf Club are now offering their members the chance to have a round of golf no matter what the weather is like outside. The Mercure-run hotel and golf club have invested in a state-of-the-art golf simulator to keep their members entertained through the winter months. Golfers will be able to book their tee times as usual and enjoy their round of golf as they normally would. The difference is they’ll get to stay warm. The simulator has a choice of over 80 courses to play and is also available to nonmembers. “We have had amazing feedback from the members that have already taken advantage of our new facility and we are excited about keeping golf alive this winter,” said George Washington’s Director of Golf, Jonny Mould.

Austin Curtis Advanced PGA professional has joined Mid Yorkshire Golf Club. Austin has many years of experience as a PGA coach, dedicating himself to helping Golfers of all levels to improve their Game.

We realise the hard work that goes into organising Societies and as a thank you from us we would like to invite anyone who has organised a Society day at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club in the past, or is booking a Society day in 2014 to a free Open Day on Monday 8th September 2014.

An influx of fresh talent was the instant upshot of the taster session staged by Malton & Norton Golf Club. Almost 50 youngsters aged from five upwards attended the try-it initiative organised by the Welham Park-based club in the middle of the half-term holidays.

He has joined Mid Yorkshire to develop an academy and a teaching facility of excellence in line with the development of the range facilities which is due to take place later in the year. He offers a number of packages suitable for beginners to advanced Golfers. He is running a number of Golf schools throughout the week for members and visitors to the club. Mid Yorkshire Golf Club is wanting to build a reputation within the industry for providing top class coaching and is especially keen to develop young golfers. Austin runs his junior coaching in conjunction with Bite size Golf and juniors will follow a structured programme covering all aspects of the game. If you would like to discuss your coaching requirements please contact the pro shop and speak to Austin.

The venture proved a big hit said Malton & Norton head professional Michael Brooks, so much so that a new intake of members followed with another batch of youngsters soon to join weekly training sessions at the club throughout winter. Besides playing “tri-golf” with soft ball and clubs, they also enjoyed a spell playing the Tiger Woods golf game on computers as well as making their own caps. For the older youngsters, there were various golf skills such as driving and putting, while parents, who brought their children along were able to avail themselves of free refreshments laid on in the clubhouse. Club captain David Midgley and ladies’ captain Linda Bower also helped out with the venture.

The Golf Guide Tour At Harrogate and Linden Hall

The Golf Guide Tour made a welcome return to Yorkshire & the North East with events at Linden Hall In August and Harrogate in September. We were blessed on both occasions with beautiful sunshine with the courses in excellent condition and just enough breeze to test players of all abilities. The prize at each event was a trip to the Costa del Sol in February 2014, joining the winners from the North West Tour and previous winners from our 2013 Tour. The event at Linden Hall, played upon the picturesque woodland course, proved to be a good test with the early starters getting the slightly better conditions before the ever increasing breeze. Winners were Peter Smith & Chris Barber both of Matfen Hall with 43 points.

Harrogate proved to be a similar day all round with some excellent golf played and the winners coming from Scarborough North Cliff in the shape of Alan Richardson & Dave Ellard, again with a winning score of 43 points. A 3 night break to Mijas in Spain including 3 rounds of Golf awaits the winning pairs, so well done to them both, start packing your bags for some sunshine and great golf next year! The relaunch of The Golf Guide Tour has proved that the event is as popular as ever, with this being the only one off competition where the winners on the day receive a trip to Spain - so keep a look out in the next issue for the 2014 Venues. Adding Value to Whickham Membership

“Please Avoid Slow Play At All Times”

New holes for Newbiggin Golf Club

Our recent membership offer is designed to encourage more new members but more importantly encourage existing members to enjoy added value. Statistics show an increase in migrant golfers. However Whickham Golf Club is determined to show that the true value of membership is really worth the commitment.

“Please Avoid Slow Play At All Times” is a regular plea to all club golfers. However there was no slow play at Hexham Golf Club in October when a squad of 29 players, working in relay, completed a full round in just 17 minutes and 18 seconds!

Work has started on the creation of two new holes in amongst the natural dunes of the Golf Course, this is sponsored by Sport England in their latest round of grants for sport initiatives.

In June this year we launched an advertising campaign to encourage new members with a guaranteed fixed fee for up to 22 months. The offer was initially for NEW members only. The unique nature of this offer is that on Feb 1st existing Whickham Members will benefit also with significant fee reductions on their subscriptions. The prices will be fixed until April 1st 2015 (that’s a further 14 months). The Management has also encouraged interest from intermediate golfers in the 21 to 29 age group. There is a very attractive 50% subsidy offered. Our research also showed gaps in the membership categories which have now been addressed by launching a new Pay and Play option for the less frequent players. A five day membership has also been added. Contact the club for more information about these and other membership offers.

This exercise in speed golf was the idea of club captain David Oliver who said, ‘I once read in the Guinness Book of Records that a ‘relay round’ had been played in less than ten minutes. Some of the best golfers in the club volunteered to take part and on they day they showed amazing commitment and resourcefulness, racing around the course as though their lives depended upon it, and playing some superb shots. Members and visitors to the golf club had been invited to place bets on how long the round would take and how many shots would be played, with the proceeds going to David’s chosen charity, WaterAid. In the event club president Vivienne Younger and past captain Brenda Carr tied for the main prize, each just three seconds out in their estimate of the time taken. Another lady member, Paula Forster, was closest to guessing the number of shots, her prediction of 93 being just two below the actual total.

This will mean that once complete the Golf Club will have holes available to encourage more practise facilities for juniors and beginners into golf. The two new holes will be a par 3 and a long and testing par 4. It is envisaged that it will take two years to complete before the members and visitors can enjoy the new holes. The course itself is a very challenging 18 hole seaside links/moorland course. It presents an interesting array of tight fairways,blind holes and very true greens (two in double format) all presented in excellent condition. If the wind decides to join in then it can become even more interesting. Newbiggin is the second oldest course in Northumberland and has provided competitive Golf for over 125 years.

From A1(M). Keep straight onto A1(M) / Aberford By Pass. Exit Dishforth Interchange, take ramp left for A168 toward Teesside / Thirsk. Road name changes to A192. At roundabout, take 3rd exit onto A1747. At roundabout, take 2nd exit onto A1053 / Greystone Road. At roundabout, take 3rd exit onto A1085 / Trunk Road. Pass through 2 roundabouts, remaining on A1085. Turn left onto Kirkleatham Lane. Turn left, and then immediately turn left onto Bridge Road. Road name changes to Majuba Road, Golf Club on road.

This Championship links course, is situated by the shores of the North Sea and measures 6750 yards from the white tees with a par 72. The Ladies play from red tees all the year round and their course measures 5545 yards with a par 73. The course itself is flat and easy to walk. It is protected by strategically placed bunkers both on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, and in common with many Championship links courses, it is a true test of golf when the wind blows. The club have hosted many County and Professional events and is the home to the

Amateur scratch competitions the Cleveland Salver and the Mid Amateur International. Signature Hole Hole 11, ‘Ridges’, Par 4, 429 yards (White Tee) Par 4 with a ridge to negotiate from the tee shot, fairly straight hole with a well guarded green. A water hazard is on the right side of the rough however it has to be a very wayward shot to catch it. Professionals Tip: Keep to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this will open the green up, for your second shot the middle of the green is always a good option, get to greedy and you may pay the consequences.

Regarded as one of the finest tests of inland golf, the course is frequently graded in the Top 100 and is built on predominantly sandy heathland, which drains exceptionally well and provides an excellent surface for all year round golf. The greens, which were voted ‘’best on the European Tour’’, remain consistent throughout the year, and the course drains well during the winter.

The course is flat and tree lined, with heather and well placed bunkers providing the hazards. The course is a good challenge for all golfers. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4. ‘Langer’ The line from the tee is down the left hand side of the fairway, possibly using a long iron to avoid running into the small trees. This allows an easy pitch over Germany Beck into the welcoming green. The approach from the right is blocked by a large oak requiring a high shot if you are to make the green. Watch out for the ash tree by the left side of the green made famous by Bernhard Langers ‘tree’ shot in 1981

From A1(M) Exit at junction 47. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto York Rd/ A59 heading to Knaresborough/ Harrogate/A661/Bradford/A658. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on York Rd/A59. Continue to follow A59. Turn left onto Bond End/A59. Continue to follow A59. The course is on your left at the top of the hill.

Located only 2 miles from the centre of the famous spa town, Harrogate Golf Club is a mature parkland course in a picturesque setting and benefits from spectacular floral displays in the Spring.

The course layout penalises any golfer who strays off the fairway, subtly placed bunkers and copses of trees require the golfer to adopt careful thought and accuracy in order to better the par.

The current course measures a little less than 6250 yards and is on fairly flat terrain. It is widely regarded as a fair test of golf, requiring accuracy rather than distance off the tee. Its Mackenzie style greens and tree-lined fairways provide an enjoyable challenge for all handicaps. The course is invariably presented in first class condition and many visiting parties come back year after year.

Signature Holes: Hole 12: A beautiful Par 3 designed by MacKenzie in 1910 and played from a raised multi level tee. The green is a tricky read for the most experienced golfer, yet it is the hole that registers the most holes-in-one each year. Hole 13: Set amidst one of the most scenic parts of the course, this long Par 4 is truly a pleasure to play.

Approaching Kirkbymoorside from Thirsk on the A170, turn left at the roundabout into the town (if approaching from Pickering turn right). Founded in 1908, Middlesbrough golf course was based at Saltersgill Farm until 1938, when it moved to its present location which was designed by James Braid (five times Open Champion), a renowned golf course architect who fully exploited the natural ravines and undulating land. The Par 72, 6700 yard course set in beautiful Vale of York countryside is designed to test golfers of all abilities. Each of the 18 holes has unique challenges with woodlands, streams and lakes providing their own hazards. The golf course was opened in 2005 and has already been recognised as one of the best courses in the area and hosts major amateur and professional county events. An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. Each of the partners plays an active role in the day-to-day operation of the Golf Course and at least one partner is usually on-site at most times of the day.

The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Signature Holes You can enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside on this course but remember to pay as much attention to the 9th and 10th holes. The 9th is a tricky par-3 with an approach to a severely guarded green, whilst the 10th includes a dog leg and an approach over water.

One mile North of Bubwith on B1228. Sat Nav key in “Birk Lane Aughton York.” Route from M62 & M18 (Hull or Sheffield) Leave M62 at Junction 37, take 2nd exit at roundabout, over next one and take first exit off third back towards Howden. Join B1228 opposite Station Pub, signposted with brown sign for The Oaks, Howden Station & Bubwith. Go straight over crossroads with Rix Garage on your right for approx half a mile and you will see the curved brick entrance to The Oaks on your right.

From the moment you approach the outstanding entrance you are transported into an oasis where friendliness, quality and professionalism (and fast USGA greens!) are the key words to the success of ‘The Oaks’. The course is built in harmony with the natural woodland setting close to the picturesque Derwent Ings. The wide green fairways blend and bend with the gentle contours of the countryside with seven lakes coming into play. Greens are all built to USGA specifications with substantial mounding. Superb practice facilities include driving bays, a ball dispenser,

putting green, practice bunkers and short game practice areas. Half-way refreshments are available at a log cabin where you can sit and feed the almost tame rainbow trout, who will perform in anticipation of a treat. You may also be fortunate enough to be paid a visit by the family of swans. An old fashioned red telephone box waits to greet you on the 18th tee where you can order your hard earned refreshments from the clubhouse. 01 How to Find

BRADFORD

From Leeds: Take the A65 (Leeds/ Ilkley) to Guiseley (Harry Ramsden’s) then, at the roundabout, take the Bradford road for approx 1 mile. Turn right into Hawksworth Lane for 1 mile From Bradford: Take the A6038 through Shipley for 3 miles then turn left into Hawksworth Lane for 1 mile. From Skipton, Ilkley and the M6 (North): Take the A65 (Skipton/Leeds) to Guiseley (Harry Ramsden’s) then, at the roundabout, take the Bradford road for approx 1 mile. Turn right into Hawksworth Lane for 1 mile.

Laid out in 1899, our Par 71 Championship Course can justly claim to be one of the oldest in Yorkshire and provides a real challenge for golfers of all handicaps. Set out in 6,300 yards, it is a moorland links which commands stunning views over Baildon and Rombald Moors. Two special features, Greenhouse Hill and Birkin Hill, have irregular contours and accommodate the testing Par 4 10th and Par 3 14th, both of which require accurate shots to well protected greens. The course runs in two loops with the 10th hole and 18th hole each finishing outside the

Clubhouse. Many holes are played along welldefined, tree-lined fairways to spacious, but fast and testing greens with subtle borrows. Always in immaculate condition, the course has recently undergone an impressive £1 million improvement programme to ensure that it remains pristine and playable throughout the seasons in all but the most adverse weather conditions. The course continues to be used for many prestigious Yorkshire Championships and is the home of The Hawksworth Trophy, a 36hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers in Northern England.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.

It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

04. How to Find From the M62, Junction 24. From the East: at the roundabout go all the way round, as if re-joining the motorway, head under the M62 and follow the sign for Blackley. From the West: take the first exit left from the slip road, signed Blackley. Follow Blackley Road downhill to the crossroads. Turn left, passing Elland Golf Club on the right, past the Rock Inn and uphill to the B6112, t-junction. Turn right down Stainland Road. The club entrance is on your left after about ¼ mile.

From M62: Leave the M62 at Junction 24 (A629 to Huddersfield & Halifax). Follow dual carriageway to Ainley Top Roundabout. Leave roundabout at third exit (A643 to Brighouse). Go under M62 to a set of traffic lights, turn right into Clough Lane. Pass the Roundhill pub, under the M62 again, and past the Clough House Inn (both pubs on left). Turn 1st right into Lightridge Road, in approximately 300yards immediately after Gernhill Avenue turn right into Huddersfield Golf Club. Approximately 5 minutes from Motorway.

Huddersfield Golf Club is one of the oldest and finest championship golf courses in the North of England. The home of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs, Huddersfield offers all a warm welcome, a fair test of golf, followed by good fellowship & excellent cuisine served within the elegant but comfortable rooms of Fixby Hall. The club is situated within 1 mile of junction 24 of the M62, equidistant from Leeds and Manchester. The Grade II listed 18th Century Clubhouse and the location makes Huddersfield the ideal venue for corporate and society golf days, business meetings and product launches. Laid out in two loops of nine holes, both

starting within 80 yards of the Clubhouse, the course offers a wonderful variety of golf played on springy moorland turf. The greens, recently upgraded to USGA standards offer the best chance of play throughout the year. There are some wonderful panoramic views and on a clear day it is possible to see more than 40 miles from the marker post on the 18th fairway. Signature Hole: 11th, ‘Pheasantry’. This is a fantastic looking par 3! The tee shot has to carry all the way onto the green as there is a steep slope at the front. Any tee shot missing the green right can kick down to the out of bounds. Missing left, the ball will run into the trees.

Our 18-hole parkland course is situated on the north side of Leeds and is one of the best golf clubs in Yorkshire. Founded in 1896 it is the original home of the Leeds Cup, the oldest trophy in professional golf. Set in approximately 80 acres, our stunning course challenges golfers of all ages and abilities. The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.

The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

11. How to Find

SHIPLEY

Travelling from Bradford: Exit the M62 at the M606 junction. Follow the M606 until the end. Take the A650 towards Shipley, Keighley and Skipton. Go through Shipley and Saltaire still heading towards Bingley, Keighley and Skipton. Keep straight on following signs to Wilsden/Cottingley (B6265). At the traffic lights after the roundabout keep in the right hand lane following signs to Bingley. After about ¼ mile, pass Kiddicreche Nursery on the left. Just after this turn left on to Beckfoot Lane. The Golf Club entrance is 200 yards on the left. Set amidst a wonderful wooded valley on the outskirts of Bingley, the course is the creation of the renowned architect Dr Alister Mackenzie of Augusta fame. Stretching across the rolling valley floor of Beckfoot this traditional parkland, visually stunning course provides golfers of any standard with a test of their skill and accuracy. The Shipley Golf Club is proud of the standard of its facilities and whatever the time of year you can be sure to find firm fairways, true greens and an idyllic environment. Much of Dr MacKenzie’s original design is evident with subtly sloping, cleverly guarded greens with narrow approaches - a hallmark of his work used to

reward the golfer for skilful and accurate play. At a little over 6200 yards do not be fooled into thinking you are in for an easy time here. Unusually for a course of this standard there are six Par 3 holes, one of which, the 7th, is the Course’s signature hole. This is a testing downhill hole with the babbling Harden Beck both to the left and rear of the small green ready to engulf the errant shot. Seven tough Par 4’s and 5 medium Par 5’s make up the rest of the challenge with mature Birch and Oak trees lining the fairways, and several ditches and ponds to test the shot makers skill.

who hit upon the idea of renting one or two fields upon which they would construct a few rudimentary holes over which they could indulge their passion for golf. Signature Hole - 3rd, Par 3 - 198yds (SI 9) Peter Alliss once wrote that this is one of the strongest par 3’s in Yorkshire. Out of bounds to the left and trees to the right. A large tree protects the green to the left and bunkers left and right - all uphill! Many of the members consider getting down in 4 a reasonable score on this hole. Play for position off the tee then chip and run up the green for a possible three. A classic example of MacKenzie green.

13. How to Find

WAKEFIELD

Less than 5 minutes from the M1 motorway. From the M1, Exit 39 follow the A636 towards Wakefield. At the first roundabout go straight ahead: at the second roundabout turn right. Go across 2 mini-roundabouts near the large Asda Supermarket. At the traffic lights go straight ahead. In 100 yards turn right onto Woodthorpe Lane. The Club is at the top. (Take care as the entrance is on a blind bend.)

When you visit us at Wakefield Golf Club you will be struck by the warmth of your welcome, and the quality of both our course and our facilities. Our course is widely regarded as one of the best in the region. It is an easy-walking course, set in undulating parkland with views over Wakefield and the surrounding countryside. The course is over 100 years old and so is very well established with many mature trees and each hole provides challenges to golfers of all abilities. Although many fairways are treelined you are unlikely to lose your ball if you stray into the trees as the grass is kept short.

Greens have true putting surfaces and we are able to play on both them and our tees all year round. The two loops of nine holes each start and end by the clubhouse and numerous points on the course allow views over Wakefield and the surrounding countryside. Key holes: Whilst all our holes are interesting, our course is particularly noted for the quality of its shorter holes, where ditches and a pond provide extra challenges for golfers of all abilities. These holes include the 2nd, 7th and 16th – three very different but equally challenging par-3’s – and the two short, risk-and-reward par-4’s the 12th and 13th.

Wetherby Golf Club is a picturesque 18 hole parkland course in the village of Linton, close to the market town of Wetherby. The large, undulating U.S.G.A greens have been designed to allow players to run the ball onto them rather than having to fly the ball through the air. This allows the more imaginative golfers to play a wide variety of approach shots to the flag. There is much less emphasis on the golfer’s ability to get the ball airborne for long distances and is therefore less punishing for the beginner.

There are lakes and bunkers, though they are placed to catch the very wayward shot, leaving a much greater margin for error in comparison to our Willow Valley Course. Signature Holes Willow Valley Course - Hole 14 - Hitting the fairway makes the approach to this island green easier! The green is below the level of the fairway, but this hole usually plays into wind Pine Valley Course - Hole 6 - A “risk and reward” par 4 with a green which can be driven from the tee, though water lurks to catch the ball which doesn’t carry the full distance.

East Yorkshire & Humberside “East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea.” East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. “A testing par 68 for the scratch player without being too difficult for the higher handicap.” To which can be added, “An attractive course, with good golfing qualities, which makes it a pleasure to play again and again.” Brough is a thinking man’s course, where accurate positioning of the

tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers. Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

On the course, the 6 water hazards and 73 bunkers make for a fantastic challenge for golfers of all ability, with the layout designed to reward accuracy on every shot. Risk and reward is on the menu as numerous opportunities present themselves on many of the fantastic holes, but with that small risk of dropping a shot into the bunker, or losing a ball in the water. Signature Hole: 4th, Par 4. An elevated tee hitting down into a fairway guarded with 2 large fairway bunkers. Avoid these bunkers and you are left with a shot around 150-170 yards into a severely undulating green.

From the West M62/A63: M62 becomes A63. Take exit marked Humber Bridge A15 / Beverley A164. Go straight across first roundabout and take first exit next roundabout onto A164 Beverley. Straight over next roundabout and after approx 1.5 miles turn right into Riplingham Road. Club entrance is on the right just after the sharp right hand bend.

A classic James Braid test laid out in 1921, Hull Golf Club provides a tough start and finish. You will enjoy spectacular views over the City of Hull, Humber Estuary and the magnificent Humber Bridge. The par 70 layout measures less than 6300 yards from the back tees tees, despite recent innovations in club and ball technology, John Dockar’s course record of 64 remained intact for a quarter of a century before being bettered by one shot in 2010. The tight tree-lined fairways punish any wayward shot and the classic Braid bunkering makes club selection difficult for approach shots. Even after a solid drive and precision approach, a

par is not guaranteed as the fast, subtle greens present a challenge to even the best of putters. Hull’s feature hole is the 10th which has seen anything from a one to a 15 recorded over the years. A driveable downhill par 4 with a picturesque pond eating into the right and front of the green make this the ultimate risk and reward hole. Mid-irons off the tee will usually leave only a wedge in, but those taking driver can expect an eagle putt, a watery grave or, worse still, three off the tee with out of bounds hugging the right hand side of the fairway. You could, course, simply admire the beautiful fountains donated by the Seniors Section!

M1 (From North or South) - Leave M1 by exit 31 - signposted WORKSOP A57. At roundabout take road signposted A57 WORKSOP. After 5½ miles turn right into Clubhouse drive (Opposite brick bus shelter)

Lessons, Pro Shop Lindrick is considered one of Britain’s finest inland courses - but it is unusual in that it finishes with a par three, albeit a great one. Lindrick is always remembered because it was there that Great Britain and Ireland beat the USA to win the 1957 Ryder Cup after a gap of 24 years. The Cup remained firmly in the grasp of the USA after that until 1985 when Europe won at the Belfry.

(some of which are very rare) can be seen around the course. The colour continues throughout the Summer and Autumn.

Lindrick has a mixed heathland and moorland with silver birch, heather and gorse lining the fairways. In 1998 Lindrick were winners of the National Award. In the spring when the gorse is in bloom, a plethora of wild flowers

Signature Holes: The 478 par five fourth is memorable with a downhill drive and a blind approach to a hidden green, while the 210 yard 18th is featured in the 500 World’s Greatest Golf Holes book.

Lindrick Golf Club Host to the 1957 Ryder Cup and the Curtis Cup in 1960. During the 1960s and 1970s Lindrick Golf Club hosted many professional events including the Dunlop Masters, the Martini International and, more recently, the Weetabix Ladies British Open Championship in 1988. Lindrick has hosted prestigious Amateur and county events including the British Youths’ Open Amateur championship; the Amateur match between England and Spain in 1991, its centenary year, and again in 2003. The Golf Club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent Club House. Surrounded by beautiful timbered parkland the course is easily accessible from the M1 or A1 in South Yorkshire. Also, being closely situated to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, it is accessible from far afield.

Originally a nine hole course laid out by Sandy Herd, in 1906 it was increased to eighteen holes and was subsequently modified by James Braid. Resulting from this is an exceptionally well laid out course, where golf is played over parkland of great beauty. The course record of 62 was recorded by Simon Coumbe of Pontefract GC during the second round of the inaugural Lee Westwood Trophy held in September 2005. He broke the previous record score of 65, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Ian Garbutt. The golf shop at Rotherham Golf Club prides itself on retail experience and exceptional customer service.

SITWELL PARK

From the M1:Leave the M1 at exit 33 (A630) towards Rotherham. At the first roundabout turn right onto the dual carriageway A631 Bawtry. At the crossroads carry straight on up the hill, then at the next roundabout, continue on the third exit along the A631. Sitwell Park Golf Club is signposted after around half a mile, with a right turn across the central reservation and onto Shrogs Wood Road. Continue along Shrogs Wood Road for a short distance and you will enter the club drive through clearly marked stone posts, and on through the automatic barrier into the car park. North East Introduction

North East North East England is one of the nine official regions of England. Covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside. Northumberland is the Northernmost of the English counties, separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River and borders on the North Sea. The terrain is level along the wild, rugged coastline and hilly in the interior, where high moor lands alternate with fertile valleys. 01. How to Find From the A1: Just 60 minutes drive North of Newcastle, and 4 miles from the A1, take either the B 1341 or the B 1342. The golf club can be found at the end of the Wynding, which leads off the main street in Bamburgh. The closest stops on the East Coast main railway line are both 30 minutes away at either Alnmouth or Berwick

Bamburgh Castle is one of the most beautiful and entertaining courses in Britain. It is short but tricky, fun but thought-provoking. It starts with two par 3s followed by two par 5s; there are six par 3s in all; the last three holes are a great finish to any round: a birdie is possible for any golfer at all three, but danger is never far away.

Signature Holes Hole 8: The Island. Par 3, 164 yards The short par three 8th hole is a real eye opener. Stunning panoramic views await you on this lofty tee from where you play across a grassy chasm to a small raised green, perched on top of a rocky ledge.

No matter what the weather may throw at you, no matter how well or poorly you may be playing, you will be inspired by your surroundings which include many of Northumberland’s finest landmarks... Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, Budle Bay, the Cheviots and the iconic Bamburgh Castle.

Hole 4: Cheviot Way. Par 5, 485 yards On a clear day there is no finer sight than that of the Cheviots in the distance. To make birdie you must hit a long, accurate second to a narrowing landing area in front of a tricky green. Trouble is never far away in the form of steep drops down to the waters of beautiful Budle Bay.

BELLINGHAM

From the North: After crossing the England/Scotland border at Carter Bar, continue along A68 for approx. 13 miles following signs towards Bellingham, turn right onto B6320 for 6 miles, when coming down into Bellingham the golf club entrance is to your left.

This highly regarded golf course is situated in the picturesque North Tyne valley between Hadrians Wall and the Scottish border. The course overlooks the village with stunning views towards Kielder Water and the Border Forest Park. The variety of holes offered is enhanced by a balance of design which makes best use of the many natural features. There is therefore a pleasing mix of testing par 3’s, long par 5’s and a memorable collection of tricky par 4’s. 03. How to Find

Situated in the Land of the Prince Bishops, with views of the picturesque Wear Valley, it is easy to see why Bishop Auckland Golf Club is considered one of the treasures in County Durham. Founded in 1894 on land owned by the Church Commission, the parkland course has retained much of its original character whilst being modified to keep up with the demands of modern golf. The course has some of the best fairways you could wish to play from, with the rough, tough enough to punish a wayward shot without losing your ball. The greens are fine and true, together with the 7th hole, which has figured

in many a magazine and in the best holes in the North of England. It is a beautiful parkland course sporting many challenging holes and the finest fairways in the County. 04. How to Find

BLYTH

Get onto the A189 (Northumberland Spine Rd) at the intersection with the A19. Turn off at the Junction signposted for Blyth Beach with a brown tourist sign. Follow the brown signs for the beach until you see the brown signs for the golf course.

Play Blyth and you’ll realise that there are some things in life that are still great value for money. Pound for pound the 6,400 yard 18 hole course on the outskirts of the seaport town in Northumberland has got to be the best days sport you’ll find for your hard earned cash. Developed on land where once stood a Pit Head and its entire mining community, Blyth has matured and developed into a tree lined parkland course with a par of 72- but don’t be fooled by its gently undulating character. Its first six holes are a test for any golfer and negotiate them without dropping too many shots and you can be set up for a good score.

But beware – there are some cunning water hazards on 9, 12, 13, and 14 that demand a strong nerve and a sure stroke. They don’t call the 13th “Sinkers” for nothing! Superb greens – many say the best in the county – will make your round one of the most pleasurable you’ll play in many a day. From the South and West leave the A1(M) just after Washington services, at the intersection of the A194. From the West: Driving East towards Newcastle leave A69 at exit marked Horsley (B6528). Go through the village of Horsley and remain on the B6528 for 3 miles until you see signs for Close House on the left. Drive down the lane on the right, following the signs for Close House.

Signature Hole: Hole 6, Par 4 The start of three tricky par fours. At 352 yards, the big hitters will fancy it but there is loads of trouble with a ditch crossing the fairway at about 280 yards from the back tees so any attempt would have to be all carry and the fairway also narrows appreciably with lots of trees on the left and a stand of trees along the ditch line on the right and there are two front bunkers on what is a two-tier quite long green. Most will settle for a lay up short of the ditch, although there is also a slope to take into consideration, and a second shot of around 150-160 yards.

Longhirst golf, known for having a beautiful relaxed setting, has an alluring layout with nice country views and undulating greens that add character to the golf courses. Scenic lakes, elevated tees and well placed bunkers provide interesting features that contribute to its excitement. Course conditions are known for being some of the best in Northumberland. Longhirst Hall Golf Course was opened in June 1997. This layout now plays as The Old Course, with full spec winter greens if required. It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive

downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. If heading north or south on the A1 take the A69 signposted Hexham and Carlisle. Exit the A69 at Heddon on the Wall and pick up the B6318, just before the Three Tuns public house, heading west towards Chollerford. Continue on the B6318 for seven miles, the turning to Matfen is on the right.

Set in 300 acres of mature parkland with established burns and woodland, Matfen Hall’s 27 hole course is a rated as one of the finest in the region. The course is an enjoyable test for players of all abilities and incorporates challenging features from the dry stone ‘ha-ha’ to the fast flowing river Pont. Although the course is easily walked, buggies are available for hire during the main season. Visitors to the area are welcome to hire clubs and a trolley. Boasting a covered driving range and putting green, members and guests are

invited to brush-up on their technique before a game or simply enjoy these facilities throughout the year. Matfen’s high quality nine hole par three course is ideal for the less experienced player. Signature Holes The picturesque and fast flowing River Pont comes into play at several holes including the 14th, one of many strong par fours. The dog-legged 16th is the pick of the par fives, but Matfen’s signature hole is surely the long par three 17th with its narrow green sited teasingly just over the river.

NEWBIGGIN

Newbiggin Golf Club is situated 2 miles from the main A189 road (Spine road) and is laid out along the Northumberland coastline forming a fine Links/Moorland course. For visitors traveling from the South, head North from the Tyne Tunnel to the North Seaton Roundabout, a distance of about 12 miles, and turn right (Eastwards) towards Newbiggin village, Travel through the village until you arrive at the end of the road. The Golf Club is located adjacent to the Church Point caravan park.

Newbiggin Golf Club is laid out over moorland at the north side of the village and follows the coast line towards Lynemouth. It is a links/ moorland course with many challenging holes which require a good drive from the tee to set up par opportunities. The greens are without doubt some of the best available in the whole of the northern counties. We do not use winter greens and can boast that even in the depths of Winter, when nearby courses are closed due to inclement weather, Newbiggin is almost always open to provide exciting golf, good food and excellent company afterwards.We pride ourselves on the

friendliness of both our Staff and members. They will certainly make you feel at home during your visit. Come and visit us and I’m sure your experience will be memorable. The 6th hole is one of our most challenging holes especially from the new back tees. It requires a true long drive to carry the gully (and miss the huge bunker) to give yourself a short iron to the hidden and very undulating green. Other players play left of the gully for safety but leave themselves a longer and more difficult approach shot to the green. When the wind is against this is one of the trickiest holes on the course.

The Northumberland Golf Club is a members’ club situated in the pleasant surroundings of Gosforth Park, Newcastle upon Tyne close to the A1. Take the opportunity to play one of the courses selected to be a Regional Qualifier for the Open Championship from 2013. It comprises a 6,683 yard challenge designed by Harry Colt and James Braid. All 18 holes are of a level, heathland nature with the firm, fast greens a particular feature, all strategically protected by bunkers. It has a much deserved reputation as a course of exceptional quality and is regarded as one of the finest in the North of England. Gosforth

Park and its Nature Reserve surround the course. Deer are spotted regularly and other wildlife adds to its attraction. The Northumberland Golf Club is proud to have hosted many major events, both professional and amateur. These include the Dunlop Masters, the English Amateur championship, the British Youths Championship, The Commonwealth Ladies Tournament and most recently (in 2004) the English Boys Open Strokeplay Championship. The club has ambitious plans to return the course to its original Colt Design with its natural heathland grasses, and visiting golfers are warmly welcomed here throughout the year.

Course History At the beginning of 1898, the originators of the Club designed the course. The first major alteration to the course was in 1899, and this was dictated by the position of the clubhouse. The next major alteration was in 1905, when the new clubhouse was reerected at the west of Gosforth Park. At about this time H S Colt advised on the reconstruction of the course and much of this work was in progress when the 1914-18 War broke out. When the war was over James Braid visited the course and gave advice regarding certain alterations which were carried out immediately.

Much of the detail about the history of the course and club can be found in George Harbottle’s book ‘The Northumberland Golf Club Story’, 100 years at the “Park” and Gosforth Park Ladies’ Golf Club 1923-1983. The Clubhouse The Northumberland Golf Club was formed in 1898 when members left a club on the Town Moor and leased land from High Gosforth Park to build a new course. A small clubhouse was built near the start of the straight mile. The present clubhouse was built in 1913, of a traditional style, in a magnificent

position nestling into the surrounding woods and with a view out over the course and High Gosforth Park. The Main Lounge is a spacious and impressive oak panelled room. Its large bay window has magnificent views down the 1st and 18th fairways and onto the 18th green. The Dining Room seats 70 and has views down the 18th fairway. It’s furniture was made by the famous ‘Mouseman’ of Kilburn, Yorkshire. The Card Room adjacent to the Main Lounge is suitable for informal card playing and as a formal meeting room. It is available for hire by members. The Mixed Lounge has views over the 1st tee and 18th fairway and green. It is used by Ladies on a Tuesday and mainly as a bar for large visiting parties. The Sun Lounge has views over the 18th fairway and green. It is used by large visiting parties and is available for hire by members as a meeting room.

From the North and South at junction 62 A1/M. Take the A690 towards Sunderland, straight through the traffic lights, under the Railway bridge and you should be in the right hand lane as our entrance is on your right. There is a filter lane but take care crossing in front of the oncoming traffic.

WHICKHAM

Five miles south west of Newcastle upon Tyne turn off A1 at sign for Whickham. In Whickham take road signposted to Burnopfield (ie Fellside Road) and proceed to golf club

Whickham Golf Club was founded in 1911 and moved to its present site at Hollinside Park in 1938. The existing clubhouse was completed in 1980 and provides superb facilities. This excellent parkland course leaves a lasting impression on visitors, set in the beautiful Derwent Valley it has outstanding views of scenic countryside, extending to the Cheviots in the north. The romantic ruins of Gibside Hall and its orangery, and Hollinside Hall serve to enhance to local landscape. Whickham Golf Club boasts 20 holes which can provide 2 separate course layouts, only one layout being in play at a time.

Our championship layout, The Nordmann Course measures 6666 yards from the men’s medal tees and is par 72. The Crombie Course measures 5969 yards from the men’s medal tees and is par 68. The landscaped and contoured greens will try your putting abilities to the full. The greens are complimented by beautiful undulating fairways and strategically placed sand traps, which provide a golfing challenge for players of all levels. Accuracy is essential with trees lining most fairways. The greens are small and undulating, they provide a thorough examination for approach shots.

The Wellington Course offers a magnificent test of golf and those who triumph follow in the footsteps of great professionals including Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose who have all played at Wynyard Golf Club Signature Hole: Hole 14, Par 5, 550 yards (White Tee) One of the finest par 5 holes. The drive must avoid bunkers down the right flank and too far left provides numerous problems. The green is protected by one of the most challenging bunkers and provides a real test of skill.
