Welcome to The Golf Guide The Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide has been brought to you by Golf Guide Publications Limited, who publish Guides in the UK and the Costa del Sol. This formula has worked for many years in Spain and is proving to be a similar success story in the North West & Cumbria, Ireland, Yorkshire & North East and more recently the South Central Golf Guide. This quarterly Guide contains reviews of Golf Clubs, local and international golf news and special golf promotions. Each issue has in-depth Golf Club editorials describing the courses, the facilities on offer, signature holes and detailed directions. These editorials are a chance for clubs to highlight themselves and detail any offers and promotions they are running during that period. The Guide is split into five areas; North, West, South, East Yorkshire & Humberside and the North East. These areas are color coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found. A full golf course listing is featured in the Guide containing the phone number and website of every golf course in Yorkshire and the North East. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers at every level; societies, club golfers, beginners and professionals.

So how does the Guide work? At the bottom of each golf course page is the club’s spring offer or website details - some of these offers are exclusive to Golf Guide readers. Some clubs just want the profile of the Guide and are happy to be associated with this high-end publication and we are happy to have them – if you have been inspired by the Guide to book a visit let them know, helping us to help them! Run a society? Get registered today to receive your free copy and a society golf day prize. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

Wynyard Golf Club Set in over 200 acres of rolling parkland and mature woodland on the exclusive Wynyard Estate near Teesside, the Wellington Course at Wynyard Golf Club is quite rightly rated as one of the North’s top golf destinations.

Stretching 7000 yards from the back tee, this outstanding and highly acclaimed 18 hole, par 72 championship course includes sweeping fairways, panoramic views, elevation changes and over 80 bunkers to challenge the most experienced of golfers. Despite only being built in 1996, the Club has successfully hosted the Seve Trophy, one of Europe’s most prestigious events, is firmly positioned amongst the best in the UK and attracts many of today’s rising stars of the future who train at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy (one of only 20 worldwide). A significant amount of money has been invested into the Wellington Course as well as Clubhouse

facilities over recent years by owners Jomast and this is evident in the very high standards on offer. Pristine course conditions, all year play, a classic course design and greens and tees that meet USGA performance standards attract both amateur and experienced golfers from far and wide. Likewise, the Club is a luxury venue for corporate hospitality, social events, dining and wedding functions. The Wellington Course is testing and includes a signature first hole; 471 yards (off the white), par 5 and bordered by an impressive fir tree lined avenue, avoiding the big oak tree to the left of the fairway and the bunker thereafter. It is from here the trees close in and a straight

second is required onto the green. The front nine concludes with a 352 yard par 4 and with bunkers to both sides, it is best to aim towards the left. The 17th hole is regarded as the easiest. Measuring 163 yards, this par 3 is short but requires great accuracy. And so it continues, long greens, tricky bunkers, water holes, deceptive corners, optical illusions and steep gradients in part but overall a brilliantly designed and challenging round of golf. Membership is available at Wynyard Golf Club and four ball and society offers run throughout the year. For more details see www.wynyardgolfclub.co.uk or call 01740 644399 (open seven days a week).

THE OPEN HOSPITALITY

Corporate Hospitality is Holding its Value By Brett Tonkyn - Director, The Open Championship Hospitality Programme

In a climate where everyone – even the most buoyant of companies – are keeping a watchful eye on the bottom line, corporate hospitality remains a viable option for many organisations. The nature of the beast has changed in recent years to mirror the economic landscape and companies are actively seeking more “bang for their buck”, to ensure that any spend of this nature brings measurable returns. Corporate hospitality events must now be more imaginative, engaging and also represent good value. They must also recognise that clients are working to budget constraints but are not always willing to compromise on the offering. We find that companies use corporate hospitality for a whole host of reasons – to cement relationships with existing clients or to

build relationships with prospective customers or even to reward staff or build morale. Whatever the reason, there’s no doubting it’s effectiveness and when that hospitality takes place as an integral part of a world class event, the opportunities to make a return on investment are many. This year The Open comes to Royal Liverpool and is expected to deliver a total economic benefit of £75m to the regional economy of Wirral and Liverpool. The headline figure includes a forecast economic impact of £30 million derived mostly from spending in the local economy by an anticipated 200,000 spectators and an estimated destination marketing benefit of £45 million gained through global television exposure of the week-long event.

THE OPEN HOSPITALITY

Apart from the general boost the event will give to the area’s economy – The Open’s Official Hospitality is also attracting a wide range of company bookings. Even in a climate where corporate hospitality budgets have been pared to the bone, The Open continues to prove a highly attractive option for businesses. The Championship held at Royal Lytham in 2012 broke previous records and the 2013 Open at Muirfield set a new record again. Bookings for The Open at Royal Liverpool are up on Muirfield and are expected to sell out in record time. This trend shows beyond any doubt that even in challenging economic circumstances, golf is proving to be very apt to the business market. We have always maintained that The Open should be “open for all” and have retained a price level that’s competitive and attractive to businesses of all sizes and golf fans alike.

While firms are still spending money, many have become very selective about what events to attend with clients and many companies are now opting for more informal hospitality. In response to this we have produced new packages for this year, delivering great value and allowing companies of all sizes to entertain and experience award-winning hospitality at a global sporting event – The Open Championship. Companies based in an area where an event like The Open takes place can also use it as great leverage with prospective clients to showcase the attributes of their region, so the value of a major sporting event like this continues long after the last round has been played. In the old days much business was conducted on the golf course and we like to think that just as much can now be done alongside it.

THE GOLF GUIDE TOUR

The Golf Guide Tour First winners of a trip to Spain decided at Hesketh GC After a torrential downpour with thunder and lightening the previous night, we arrived at Hesketh Golf Club to find some of the greens under water and two of the fairways totally impassable. A cancelation of the event seemed the only option. Thankfully the drainage on the links course and the amazing work by Peter and his ground staff meant that the club was able to host the first event - and despite being damp in a couple of places the course was in fabulous condition. Congratulations to Eddy Sterling & Saj Hashmi both of Wychwood Park who secured the first places on the plane from our 2014 Tour. A winning score of 45 points beat no less than 4 groups on 43 points to secure the 3 night golf break to the Costa del Sol In November of this year. Having looked like being the winners for a few hours, second place on a back nine count back went to Scott Sugden & Ryan Andrew, both of Fleetwood GC with 43 points and winning an Odyssey putter each. Third place went to Steve Lamont of Birchwood & George Harwood of Ellesmere GC - again with 43 points but an inferior back nine. Hopefully the prize of a Callaway stand bag each will ease the pain a little.

This year to keep the interest high we are having 4 nearest the pin competitions - all winning Callaway products - so congratulations to the winners. Hole 2: (Callaway umbrella, towel, hat & a dozen balls) Ryan Andrew Fleetwood GC Hole 4: (Callaway Stand Bag) Gary Winstanley Sandiway GC Hole 11: (Odyssey Putter) Chris Giomarelli Burnley GC Hole 16 : (4 Ball Hesketh GC) Russell Crane Longest Drive prize , Hole 18: (£50 Golf Voucher) Gary Winstanley, Sandiway GC. A huge thank you must go to Paul, all the staff and the members at Hesketh GC for their wonderful hospitality and welcome we all received. I’m sure many of us will be back in the coming months to enjoy the fabulous course in slightly drier conditions. Finally a thank you to all the players for your support and comments - many of you repeat visitors to our events. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Golf Guide Tour in a future event in the North West or Yorkshire & the North East.

The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. Course playable 01 April to 31 October.

Wetherby GC Wins Golfers’ Choice Award

Leeds Golf Club appoint first Lady President

Attention golfers – are you fed up of spending countless hours trawling multiple websites searching for your next golf holiday or round of golf? Well it’s time to look no further than www.golfboo.com, the internet’s first all-inone golf specific search-engine & interactive community. This ingenious platform, launched to critical acclaim in 2013, now offers users even quicker access to the best value golf experiences following recent upgrades designed to deliver a seamless booking process.

Wetherby Golf Club, the Yorkshire based golf club has won a regional award in a national competition called the Golfers’ Choice Golf Club Awards.

Leeds Golf Club is delighted to announce the election of the first Lady President in its 118 year history. Ann has been associated with golf since she joined Leeds Golf Club in 1971. She served on the Ladies’ Committee as Handicap Secretary, Secretary and was elected Lady Captain in 1979.

With over 6,500 golf packages available from 65 different tour operators across Europe, GOLFBOO has quickly become the trusted medium for golfers researching & booking their golf. Be it the trip of lifetime to an iconic destination, a lads weekend break or a lastminute round at a local course, you can be sure GOLFBOO has your every need covered. With newly signed agreements with popular international booking engines such as Golf Switch, Concept and Book & Golf this process couldn’t be more simple and easy to use. The standout feature of the latest evolution of GOLFBOO is without doubt its new teetime booking and real-time price comparison function. The first of its kind in the golf industry, this super-fast system gives users a live view of the best times to play golf at more than 7,000 courses throughout the UK & Continental Europe. To tee-off your perfect golf escape, simply input your schedule & budget requirements and let the power of GOLFBOO do the rest – rather than wasting time using multiple websites. Alongside other functional new features, the improved GOLFBOO now encompasses upwards of 125,000 detailed course reviews & over 200,000 hotel options, catering for a wide range of budgets. Not only does GOLFBOO cut search time, but comments from like-minded golfers, reviews based on real-life experiences and uploaded photos from other users give golfers a unique platform to connect and communicate like never before.

The unique scheme measures the quality of facilities, customer service and value for money provided by clubs by asking players to rate them on an online questionnaire. Over 100 clubs across the UK took part in the competition during 2013. Based on players ratings Wetherby Golf Club was ranked the best club in the North of England region. The Awards are unique in the industry because, unlike others which judge only course quality, the Golf Club Awards measures the complete golf experience as voted for by the people who play the courses whether they be members, guests or societies. Simon Brown who owns and runs the scheme explains “We believe it’s not just the quality of the course that makes a good golf club, it’s a combination of customer service, facilities and value for money which all combine to give a great golfing experience to every player. Getting it right requires a lot of hard work from staff and management alike. The golf club market is changing in the UK. Clubs need to generate additional revenue beyond the traditional membership income. Doing well in these awards provides the ideal platform for clubs to market themselves to a wider audience”.

She joined the Yorkshire Ladies’ County Executive in 1996 serving as Competition Secretary and County Secretary becoming the County Captain in 2006 and in that year Captaining the Yorkshire Team who successfully won the English County Championship. Ann was also County Vice President in 2007. In 2008 Ann joined the English Womens’ Golf Association Championship and Venues Committee where she served until last year. Her involvement with Yorkshire continues as Junior Welfare Officer and at present is running the County MidAmateur Team. The Club Secretary - Paul Mawman: “At the recent AGM and with 140 members present Ann was elected with overwhelming support. She was awarded life membership in 2013 and this further accolade is befitting someone who has always supported the club both internally and externally and is also recognition for the many years she has given to the sport of golf in the county.”

Club Manager Darren Tear said “We are all absolutely delighted to have won this award. All the Club Staff are totally focussed on Customer care and providing a first class service to our Members and guests at all times. The course has been in excellent condition for the last 2 seasons and Wetherby Golf Club goes from strength to strength”.

Ann commented: “I was born a couple of miles from Leeds Golf Club and lived there until I was married - I am a Leeds person. My very good friend Anne Fry persuaded me to take up golf 43 years ago and we joined Leeds Golf Club - I have never wanted to be a member anywhere else. In those 43 years I have seen many changes but I never could have imagined this day….. I am both honoured and delighted to be asked to be the President and will try to do all that is expected of me and I thank the President and Committee of Past Captains for making this possible.”

golf course in Northumberland. I am sure our members will be delighted and we will be more attractive to golfers considering where to play their golf”. Terry Minett of Morpeth GC said “We share the same values as Stocksfield and a key priority for us is enhancing the value of membership. The distance between our two clubs and the difference course challenges make this partnership workable. Offering our existing members the opportunity to play a different course at no extra charge compliments our strategy and further enhances our membership offer. We see it as a “win win” for both clubs but most importantly a reward for our loyal members”.

Stocksfield & Morpeth announce Joint Membership Partnership Two enterprising and forward thinking golf clubs based in Northumberland have partnered to create a new joint membership category. Called “Associate Membership”, they believe it to be the first of its kind between golf clubs in the county, but one that is becoming popular in the rest of the country. The new arrangement allows members of either club to play golf and enjoy the benefits of golf club membership at the other free of charge, seven days a week including select competition play.

The objective is to reward loyal members of both clubs by providing added value to their membership fees. The new category should be attractive to new members on the basis that they will get two memberships for the price of one! Roger Jones Secretary/Manager at Stocksfield GC commented “We have been thinking of this concept for a while as part of our strategy to retain loyal members by giving them greater value for money. It was beneficial to find a like-minded management team at Morpeth who embraced the idea as well as it being a top

The arrangement is for a trial period of one year and is free to existing members. New members joining either Club from today, who want to enjoy Associate Membership, will pay a one off registration fee of just £25. Associate Members can also bring guests at the home club member’s guest rate. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

North Yorkshire Introduction

North Yorkshire North Yorkshire is England’s largest county with an area of more than 800,000 hectares to explore. The county is fascinating, and no matter what your interest or time to spare, offers a huge range of activities and attractions. The county of North Yorkshire stretches across Northern England from its spectacular coastline in the East, across Moors and fertile valleys to the Dales in the West, and attracts millions of tourists who flock to see its traditional market towns, beautiful countryside and historic sites. The county’s greatest asset is its wonderful scenery, whether

it is the NorthYork Moors, to be enjoyed on foot, by car or steam railway or the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales. Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people’s living rooms across the world by the success of television series such as the stories of James Herriot and the Heartbeat adventures.
Along the 45 miles of coastline there are the traditional resorts of Scarborough and Filey and Whitby. The ruins of monasteries scatter the county at places such as Rievaulx, Jervaulx and Fountains Abbey - a World Heritage site.

The Harrogate District is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, flourishing towns, villages and heritage sites. Harrogate has a rich spa history, combined with parks, gardens and floral displays.
Close by is the medieval market town of Knaresborough, famous for its 14th Century ruined castle and Mother Shiptons Cave. There are also spectacular memories of bygone days in North Yorkshire with magnificent structures which have stood for centuries. Selby Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are two of the finest examples of English architecture to be found anywhere in the world.
North Yorkshire is indeed a land of diversity.

This Championship links course, is situated by the shores of the North Sea and measures 6750 yards from the white tees with a par 72. The Ladies play from red tees all the year round and their course measures 5545 yards with a par 73. The course itself is flat and easy to walk. It is protected by strategically placed bunkers both on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, and in common with many Championship links courses, it is a true test of golf when the wind blows. The club have hosted many County and Professional events and is the home to the

Amateur scratch competitions the Cleveland Salver and the Mid Amateur International. Signature Hole Hole 11, ‘Ridges’, Par 4, 429 yards (White Tee) Par 4 with a ridge to negotiate from the tee shot, fairly straight hole with a well guarded green. A water hazard is on the right side of the rough however it has to be a very wayward shot to catch it. Professionals Tip: Keep to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this will open the green up, for your second shot the middle of the green is always a good option, get to greedy and you may pay the consequences.

Regarded as one of the finest tests of inland golf, the course is frequently graded in the Top 100 and is built on predominantly sandy heathland, which drains exceptionally well and provides an excellent surface for all year round golf. The greens, which were voted ‘’best on the European Tour’’, remain consistent throughout the year, and the course drains well during the winter.

The course is flat and tree lined, with heather and well placed bunkers providing the hazards. The course is a good challenge for all golfers. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4. ‘Langer’ The line from the tee is down the left hand side of the fairway, possibly using a long iron to avoid running into the small trees. This allows an easy pitch over Germany Beck into the welcoming green. The approach from the right is blocked by a large oak requiring a high shot if you are to make the green. Watch out for the ash tree by the left side of the green made famous by Bernhard Langers ‘tree’ shot in 1981

From A1(M) Exit at junction 47. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto York Rd/ A59 heading to Knaresborough/ Harrogate/A661/Bradford/A658. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on York Rd/A59. Continue to follow A59. Turn left onto Bond End/A59. Continue to follow A59. The course is on your left at the top of the hill.

Located only 2 miles from the centre of the famous spa town, Harrogate Golf Club is a mature parkland course in a picturesque setting and benefits from spectacular floral displays in the Spring.

The course layout penalises any golfer who strays off the fairway, subtly placed bunkers and copses of trees require the golfer to adopt careful thought and accuracy in order to better the par.

The current course measures a little less than 6250 yards and is on fairly flat terrain. It is widely regarded as a fair test of golf, requiring accuracy rather than distance off the tee. Its Mackenzie style greens and tree-lined fairways provide an enjoyable challenge for all handicaps. The course is invariably presented in first class condition and many visiting parties come back year after year.

Signature Holes: Hole 12: A beautiful Par 3 designed by MacKenzie in 1910 and played from a raised multi level tee. The green is a tricky read for the most experienced golfer, yet it is the hole that registers the most holes-in-one each year. Hole 13: Set amidst one of the most scenic parts of the course, this long Par 4 is truly a pleasure to play.

Signature Holes Like all courses, Kirkbymoorside has its signature holes. Whatever your handicap the ‘right to left’ drive from the 7th tee will provide a true test to those seeking par and the 10th is not named the ‘widow maker’ for nothing. Situated in countryside five miles south of Middlesbrough the course has stunning views of the Cleveland Hills and is a joy to play as many have found, not least many of the

country’s top young players who arrive every year to play in the North of England Youths Open – a tournament started and run by the club themselves which has grown to attract national and international backing from the major golf bodies. A 16-year-old Sandy Lyle and Richard Boxall are among the winners of what is rated a very prestigious tournament. There are many attractive and challenging holes, the tree-lined short 4th (197 yards), the dog-leg 11th around or over Oakwood (522 yards), the 8th which has been described by many visitors as one of the most attractive holes they have played.

Renowned for its famous Spa Baths and visitor attractions, there are many reasons to visit Harrogate, but none are more valid than the opportunity to try out the sensational course at Oakdale Golf Club, bizarrely, within a ten minute walk of the town. Established in 1914 and designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Oakdale’s unique mix of moor and parkland has earned it a reputation to rival even the very best venues in Northern England. Moreover, few facilities offer such a close tie with accommodation in the adjacent town centre, providing the

ideal stay and play situation. At just under 6,500 yards, the course offers a true test to golfers of varying abilities, generous fairways and beautiful scenery abounds. Set in 130 acres of naturally undulating terrain, you can expect to come across a diverse range of wildlife, with foxes and roe deer a common sight. With no two holes the same, it’s a well know fact that scoring at Oakdale depends on how well you negotiate the par 3s with both the 9th and 12th protected by water.

Oakdale Golf Club celebrates its Centenary in 2014. Be part of the party, memberships still available & visitors most welcome. Check on the website www.oakdalegolfclub.co.uk for details of our Lifestyle package.

An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. Each of the partners plays an active role in the day-to-day operation of the Golf Course and at least one partner is usually on-site at most times of the day.

The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Signature Holes You can enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside on this course but remember to pay as much attention to the 9th and 10th holes. The 9th is a tricky par-3 with an approach to a severely guarded green, whilst the 10th includes a dog leg and an approach over water.

SCARBOROUGH NORTH CLIFF

13. How to Find Directions From A64: Head South on A64 towards Scarborough. Turn left onto B1258 the B1258 turns slightly right and becomes A170 Continue to follow A170. Go through 1 roundabout , at the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Stepney Drive. Sharp left onto Scalby Road / A171 turn right onto Green Lane continue onto Cross Lane. Go through 1 roundabout. Continue onto North Cliff Avenue.

Facilities Although Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club dates back to 1909, the present course was designed by James Braid and established in 1928. The course starts on the cliff top and then moves inland threading its way between trees and spinneys, with lovely views of the North Yorkshire Moors before returning to the cliff top for the final three holes. The course is sufficiently undulating to be interesting without being excessively hilly and is a tough but fair test for golfers of all abilities. With the prevailing wind from the west the first five holes provide a stiff test of golf and par on these holes is a good start.

The short 7th and the par 5s at 8 and 9 provide some respite before the next major test “Amen corner” (10, 11 and 12) is tackled. Hole 10 requires a long straight drive and the 11th is a memorable hole played from an elevated tee over water to a green surrounded by trees. The 12th is a testing dogleg played around trees to the right to a raised green. The 13th and 14th are birdie chances as the course winds its way back to the 15th tee where once again the sea comes into view. The homeward run has glorious sea views across the North Bay towards the Castle before arriving back at the Clubhouse where a welcome drink awaits.

Clubhouse with free car parking and breathtaking views or Scarborough Castle and North Bay where members and their guests can relax and enjoy a meal, snack or refreshments in our extensive catering and bar facilities.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

West Yorkshire Introduction

West Yorkshire West Yorkshire has a great deal to offer visitors to the county with its heritage attractions, grand stately homes, green open spaces, canals, towns and cities. Composed of the districts of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, a network of paths and cycle-ways both in towns and the countryside allow for easy access to the many sites of interest. Leeds – once the hub of the North based on its manufacturing and textile industries, is now a leading vibrant legal, finance and retail centre by day and lively cosmopolitan city by night. Award winning restaurants, wine bars, music venues, theatres and art galleries offer

a vast array of entertainment to satisfy any appetite. Vanguard architectural sites such as Bridgewater Place, 1 City Square and the Waterfront properties sit comfortably with the historic structures of the Corn Exchange and Leeds Kirkgate Market. An exciting retail experience is on offer with the likes of Harvey Nichols nestling next to the renowned Victoria Quarter, boasting an abundance of boutiques as well as well-known high street names. Leeds is also the sporting home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the most decorated Club in County Cricket History, and of course the celebrated Leeds United Football Club.

Proud of its long and important history, Bradford is home to a number of important historical buildings and sites; including one of only two World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire, and the most visited museum outside of London. The city has a lively multicultural vibe with a variety of diversions including the esteemed Bradford Alhambra Theatre. From a golfing perspective, West Yorkshire is home to some of the best inland courses in Britain. Included in this list are Alwoodley, Moortown and Moor Allerton who all sit proudly in the list of the top 100 courses in England.

Laid out in 1899, our Par 71 Championship Course can justly claim to be one of the oldest in Yorkshire and provides a real challenge for golfers of all handicaps. Set out in 6,300 yards, it is a moorland links which commands stunning views over Baildon and Rombald Moors. Two special features, Greenhouse Hill and Birkin Hill, have irregular contours and accommodate the testing Par 4 10th and Par 3 14th, both of which require accurate shots to well protected greens. The course runs in two loops with the 10th hole and 18th hole each finishing outside the

Clubhouse. Many holes are played along welldefined, tree-lined fairways to spacious, but fast and testing greens with subtle borrows. Always in immaculate condition, the course has recently undergone an impressive £1 million improvement programme to ensure that it remains pristine and playable throughout the seasons in all but the most adverse weather conditions. The course continues to be used for many prestigious Yorkshire Championships and is the home of The Hawksworth Trophy, a 36hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers in Northern England.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.

It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

After playing why not visit our Clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality. It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.

The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.

The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

11. How to Find

SHIPLEY

Travelling from Bradford: Exit the M62 at the M606 junction. Follow the M606 until the end. Take the A650 towards Shipley, Keighley and Skipton. Go through Shipley and Saltaire still heading towards Bingley, Keighley and Skipton.
Keep straight on following signs to Wilsden/Cottingley (B6265). At the traffic lights after the roundabout keep in the right hand lane following signs to Bingley.
After about ¼ mile, pass Kiddicreche Nursery on the left. Just after this turn left on to Beckfoot Lane. The Golf Club entrance is 200 yards on the left. Set amidst a wonderful wooded valley on the outskirts of Bingley, the course is the creation of the renowned architect Dr Alister Mackenzie of Augusta fame. Stretching across the rolling valley floor of Beckfoot this traditional parkland, visually stunning course provides golfers of any standard with a test of their skill and accuracy. The Shipley Golf Club is proud of the standard of its facilities and whatever the time of year you can be sure to find firm fairways, true greens and an idyllic environment. Much of Dr MacKenzie’s original design is evident with subtly sloping, cleverly guarded greens with narrow approaches - a hallmark of his work used to

reward the golfer for skilful and accurate play. At a little over 6200 yards do not be fooled into thinking you are in for an easy time here. Unusually for a course of this standard there are six Par 3 holes, one of which, the 7th, is the Course’s signature hole. This is a testing downhill hole with the babbling Harden Beck both to the left and rear of the small green ready to engulf the errant shot. Seven tough Par 4’s and 5 medium Par 5’s make up the rest of the challenge with mature Birch and Oak trees lining the fairways, and several ditches and ponds to test the shot makers skill.

who hit upon the idea of renting one or two fields upon which they would construct a few rudimentary holes over which they could indulge their passion for golf. Signature Hole - 3rd, Par 3 - 198yds (SI 9) Peter Alliss once wrote that this is one of the strongest par 3’s in Yorkshire. Out of bounds to the left and trees to the right. A large tree protects the green to the left and bunkers left and right - all uphill! Many of the members consider getting down in 4 a reasonable score on this hole. Play for position off the tee then chip and run up the green for a possible three. A classic example of MacKenzie green.

WAKEFIELD

Less than 5 minutes from the M1 motorway. From the M1, Exit 39 follow the A636 towards Wakefield. At the first roundabout go straight ahead: at the second roundabout turn right. Go across 2 mini-roundabouts near the large Asda Supermarket. At the traffic lights go straight ahead. In 100 yards turn right onto Woodthorpe Lane. The Club is at the top. (Take care as the entrance is on a blind bend.)

When you visit us at Wakefield Golf Club you will be struck by the warmth of your welcome, and the quality of both our course and our facilities. Our course is widely regarded as one of the best in the region. It is an easy-walking course, set in undulating parkland with views over Wakefield and the surrounding countryside. The course is over 100 years old and so is very well established with many mature trees and each hole provides challenges to golfers of all abilities. Although many fairways are treelined you are unlikely to lose your ball if you stray into the trees as the grass is kept short.

Greens have true putting surfaces and we are able to play on both them and our tees all year round. The two loops of nine holes each start and end by the clubhouse and numerous points on the course allow views over Wakefield and the surrounding countryside. Key holes: Whilst all our holes are interesting, our course is particularly noted for the quality of its shorter holes, where ditches and a pond provide extra challenges for golfers of all abilities. These holes include the 2nd, 7th and 16th – three very different but equally challenging par-3’s – and the two short, risk-and-reward par-4’s the 12th and 13th.

Our Premier Course, Willow Valley, is home of the Yorkshire P.G.A Championship and voted 9th best new course in the British Isles by Today’s Golfer. With 50 golf holes over 4 courses and a 24 bay floodlit driving range we are confident in saying that we have a course to suit all needs. Our Jewel in the Crown is the Willow Valley Course which has been designed to capture the imagination of golfers, ensuring members are never bored and visitors cannot resist the temptation to return and enjoy the fresh challenges thrown up by the course. Designed to

challenge the skill of the most experienced golfer, the Willow Valley Course is truly a masterpiece. Built to U.S.G.A standards the course is guarded by water on 11 of its 18 holes making the design unique in this fine golfing region. Water, a rock face, and a tree guard the green on the 6th hole making it difficult to get near to the pin to make par, while the island green on the 14th hole has the golfer deciding whether to lay up or go for it in regulation. Along side the water numerous bunkers and strategically placed trees make this a most interesting and picturesque course. Visitors are advised to allow between 4 to 5 hours to play the course.

The large, undulating U.S.G.A greens have been designed to allow players to run the ball onto them rather than having to fly the ball through the air. This allows the more imaginative golfers to play a wide variety of approach shots to the flag. There is much less emphasis on the golfer’s ability to get the ball airborne for long distances and is therefore less punishing for the beginner.

There are lakes and bunkers, though they are placed to catch the very wayward shot, leaving a much greater margin for error in comparison to our Willow Valley Course. Signature Holes Willow Valley Course - Hole 14 - Hitting the fairway makes the approach to this island green easier! The green is below the level of the fairway, but this hole usually plays into wind Pine Valley Course - Hole 6 - A “risk and reward” par 4 with a green which can be driven from the tee, though water lurks to catch the ball which doesn’t carry the full distance.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

East Yorkshire & Humberside Introduction

East Yorkshire & Humberside “East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea.” East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. To the west are the Yorkshire Wolds, a chalk formation, and you can explore the rolling hills along the 79 mile long

Yorkshire Wolds Way. To the south-east is the flat coastal plain of Holderness which terminates at the wild Spurn Peninsular East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea. Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a narrow projection of sand and shingle, constantly changing with the tides and a stop over for thousands of migrating birds. Bridlington, with its beautiful beaches and brand new award winning promenades and gardens, offers a host of all weather activities. This famous seaside resort has an irresistible appeal for people of all ages and a special Bridlington welcome that is guaranteed to warm your heart.

BROUGH

From the West via M62/A63: After Junction 38 the M62 becomes a dual carriageway, the A63, approximately 3 miles after this change exit left signed South Cave, Market Weighton and Beverley. At the T junction turn right following local signs for Brough. Carry on to a roundabout take the 3rd exit towards Brough and Elloughton continue to the next roundabout and take the 2nd exit into Cave Road, signed Brough Aircraft Factory. Brough Golf Club is a mile along this road on your left hand side.

“A testing par 68 for the scratch player without being too difficult for the higher handicap.” To which can be added, “An attractive course, with good golfing qualities, which makes it a pleasure to play again and again.” Brough is a thinking man’s course, where accurate positioning of the

tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers. Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

This beautiful golf course boasts many great attributes which make playing it an unforgettable experience. With USGA greens and tees along with fully drained fairways you can be sure that the playing surfaces are of the highest quality at all times of the year, and the friendly Clubhouse staff make sure that your post-round experience is just as good. Recent developments at the club include the new luxury Changing & Locker rooms, and the ambitions are to extend the Clubhouse further with a brand new function suite for large golfing parties, weddings and conferences. It’s all happening at Burstwick!

On the course, the 6 water hazards and 73 bunkers make for a fantastic challenge for golfers of all ability, with the layout designed to reward accuracy on every shot. Risk and reward is on the menu as numerous opportunities present themselves on many of the fantastic holes, but with that small risk of dropping a shot into the bunker, or losing a ball in the water. Signature Hole: 4th, Par 4. An elevated tee hitting down into a fairway guarded with 2 large fairway bunkers. Avoid these bunkers and you are left with a shot around 150-170 yards into a severely undulating green.

A classic James Braid test laid out in 1921, Hull Golf Club provides a tough start and finish. You will enjoy spectacular views over the City of Hull, Humber Estuary and the magnificent Humber Bridge. The par 70 layout measures less than 6300 yards from the back tees tees, despite recent innovations in club and ball technology, John Dockar’s course record of 64 remained intact for a quarter of a century before being bettered by one shot in 2010. The tight tree-lined fairways punish any wayward shot and the classic Braid bunkering makes club selection difficult for approach shots. Even after a solid drive and precision approach, a

par is not guaranteed as the fast, subtle greens present a challenge to even the best of putters. New 2000 sq ft pro shop - Arguably the best pro shop in the county stocking prestigious fashion brands such as Hugo Boss, J Lindeberg, Tom Morris, Golfino and Lija as well as being a custom fit centre for Callaway and Cobra Golf. Indoor performance centre - A fully equipped Callaway and Cobra custom fit centre using Flightscope dolplar radar technology and V1 interactive video swing analysis software, golf simulator enabling you to play the worlds best golf courses.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

South Yorkshire Introduction

South Yorkshire You could be forgiven for thinking that all South Yorkshire can offer is an industrial history of mining and steel manufacturing. The main towns within this Yorkshire and Humber county did grow around those industries, themselves having huge educational and historical appeal for visitors but, thanks to multi-million pound investment via government initiatives and Heritage Lottery funding, the whole area is buzzing with regeneration and redevelopment, seeing some of its slightly dusty, historical gems being given a good polish and the chance to shine again.

In addition to firm favourites (Doncaster Railway, Doncaster Racecourse), and those restored to their former glories (Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park Museum, Wentworth Castle), the area is brimming with new, lively, modern venues offering a variety of entertainment, culture and attractions for more cosmopolitan tourists including: art galleries & exhibitions (Millennium Galleries, Graves Art Gallery), contemporary/traditional music & theatre (Sheffield City Hall, The Leadmill, The Harley), sporting fixtures (Don Valley

Stadium, Hallam FM Arena, The Crucible), and state of the art shopping centres (Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks) - all of which mean this area is now a firm favourite for those visiting ‘up North’. If you enjoy the outdoors, South Yorkshire is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Pennine Yorkshire and the Trans Pennine Trail which cuts right across the region. So there is never a shortage of things to see and do in this abundant area of Yorkshire.

Signature Holes: The 478 par five fourth is memorable with a downhill drive and a blind approach to a hidden green, while the 210 yard 18th is featured in the 500 World’s Greatest Golf Holes book.

Thanks to its enviable year-round fantastic condition, Lindrick is a course that is always playable no matter what the weather. Lindrick will certainly provide an excellent challenge for the visiting golfer, regardless of handicap.

ROTHERHAM

Leave the M1 at junction 32 to join the M18, then join the M18 motorway (signposted Hull). Leave the M18 at junction 1, then at roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A631 (signposted Rotherham). After 1 mile at traffic signals turn right onto Church Lane (signposted Ravenfield). At miniroundabout turn left onto Main Street B6093 (signposted Ravenfield). Continue through Ravenfield on the B6093. Then after almost 3 miles at T-junction turn left onto the A630 (signposted Rotherham). Golf Club is 1 mile on right hand side just after entering Thrybergh.

The Golf Club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent Club House. Surrounded by beautiful timbered parkland the course is easily accessible from the M1 or A1 in South Yorkshire. Also, being closely situated to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, it is accessible from far afield.

Originally a nine hole course laid out by Sandy Herd, in 1906 it was increased to eighteen holes and was subsequently modified by James Braid. Resulting from this is an exceptionally well laid out course, where golf is played over parkland of great beauty. The course record of 62 was recorded by Simon Coumbe of Pontefract GC during the second round of the inaugural Lee Westwood Trophy held in September 2005. He broke the previous record score of 65, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Ian Garbutt. The golf shop at Rotherham Golf Club prides itself on retail experience and exceptional customer service.

Tankersley Park Golf Club’s fine parkland course was designed by legendary golf course architect Martin Hawtree, the mastermind behind some of the most famous courses in the world. It opened for business in 1907 and has hardly looked back. Today, it enjoys an active membership who eagerly and amiably welcomes visitors who come to play their challenging course, found just outside Sheffield in High Green An eighteen-hole course, it stretches over 6244 yards of fabulous Yorkshire countryside for which it offers a par and standard scratch score of 70. If you are to challenge that score though,

there are plenty of hazards and testing holes you must overcome along the way. Enjoy! The course, is meticulously maintained and a fair but tough test for the club golfer. Tankersley Park Golf Club has met England Golf’s requirements and is accredited with the GolfMark Award. The club has also been recognised by Sport England as a Clubmark facility. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

North East Introduction

North East North East England is one of the nine official regions of England. Covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside. Northumberland is the Northernmost of the English counties, separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River and borders on the North Sea. The terrain is level along the wild, rugged coastline and hilly in the interior, where high moor lands alternate with fertile valleys. Hadrian’s Wall is probably the most notable feature; built in Roman times.

in County Durham. At the heart of this county lies Durham City; small enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site. Much of the West of the County, including Teesdale, Weardale and the Derwent Valley, is included in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is perfect country for walking, cycling, riding, wildlife-watching and exploring the many charming villages and towns.

The area suffered severely during the border wars between England and Scotland. The legacy of the Border wars of the 14th-16th centuries have resulted in Northumberland having more castles to explore than any other English county.

Tyne & Wear is an area with bustling towns and cities; encompassing Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. The diversity of the area and rich warmth of the people make for a fusion of attractions and appeal.

From the North Pennines in the West to the North Sea Coast in the East, there are attractions and delights to suit all tastes

Newcastle can boast three large shopping centres, many fascinating museums as well as cinemas, theatres presenting a vast

range of entertainment, sport and leisure centres, art-centres and a rich variety of clubs, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops catering for all tastes, pubs and bars all selling the local brew Newcastle Brown Ale and everything else you could could wish for. Teeside is an area now more familiarly known as the Tees Valley; stretching the salmon rich reaches of the upper Tees to the coastal beauty and character laden sea ports. The maritime history and industrial heritage are very much in evidence throughout this area. Teesside offers the opportunity for a country ramble over an endless expanse of moorland, the thrill of sandy beaches and towering cliffs as well as the pleasure of a successful days shopping and fine dining at a chic urban restaurant. From quaint fishing ports, beautiful countryside and cosmopolitan city life, this area has it all.

BAMBURGH CASTLE

01. How to Find From the A1: Just 60 minutes drive North of Newcastle, and 4 miles from the A1, take either the B 1341 or the B 1342. The golf club can be found at the end of the Wynding, which leads off the main street in Bamburgh. The closest stops on the East Coast main railway line are both 30 minutes away at either Alnmouth or Berwick

Bamburgh Castle is one of the most beautiful and entertaining courses in Britain. It is short but tricky, fun but thought-provoking. It starts with two par 3s followed by two par 5s; there are six par 3s in all; the last three holes are a great finish to any round: a birdie is possible for any golfer at all three, but danger is never far away.

Signature Holes Hole 8: The Island. Par 3, 164 yards The short par three 8th hole is a real eye opener. Stunning panoramic views await you on this lofty tee from where you play across a grassy chasm to a small raised green, perched on top of a rocky ledge.

No matter what the weather may throw at you, no matter how well or poorly you may be playing, you will be inspired by your surroundings which include many of Northumberland’s finest landmarks... Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, Budle Bay, the Cheviots and the iconic Bamburgh Castle.

Hole 4: Cheviot Way. Par 5, 485 yards On a clear day there is no finer sight than that of the Cheviots in the distance. To make birdie you must hit a long, accurate second to a narrowing landing area in front of a tricky green. Trouble is never far away in the form of steep drops down to the waters of beautiful Budle Bay.

BELLINGHAM

From the North: After crossing the England/Scotland border at Carter Bar, continue along A68 for approx. 13 miles following signs towards Bellingham, turn right onto B6320 for 6 miles, when coming down into Bellingham the golf club entrance is to your left.

This highly regarded golf course is situated in the picturesque North Tyne valley between Hadrians Wall and the Scottish border. The course overlooks the village with stunning views towards Kielder Water and the Border Forest Park. The variety of holes offered is enhanced by a balance of design which makes best use of the many natural features. There is therefore a pleasing mix of testing par 3’s, long par 5’s and a memorable collection of tricky par 4’s. The overriding memory of Bellingham Golf Course will be the natural surrounding beauty and the unstinting challenge which ensures

continued enthusiasm to the very last putt. “I can’t think of a holiday course which gives better value for money or more enjoyment” (Duncan Madeson, Newcastle Evening Chronicle). Visitors are assured of a very warm welcome both before and after their round and can enjoy quality catering in the lounge bar which looks out over the 18th hole. Signature Hole: 18th, Par 4, 374 yards “Boggle Hole” is a fitting finish in front of the clubhouse. Its the hole that visitors always remember because of the two ravines which have to be negotiated with the second shot, to reach the plateau green.

BISHOP AUCKLAND

03. How to Find

Situated in the Land of the Prince Bishops, with views of the picturesque Wear Valley, it is easy to see why Bishop Auckland Golf Club is considered one of the treasures in County Durham. Founded in 1894 on land owned by the Church Commission, the parkland course has retained much of its original character whilst being modified to keep up with the demands of modern golf. The course has some of the best fairways you could wish to play from, with the rough, tough enough to punish a wayward shot without losing your ball. The greens are fine and true, together with the 7th hole, which has figured

in many a magazine and in the best holes in the North of England. It is a beautiful parkland course sporting many challenging holes and the finest fairways in the County. Whether you have a single figure handicap or are just taking up the game you will enjoy a round here. The clubhouse was rebuilt in the 1990’s and enjoys spectacular views across the Wear Valley. It is well worth taking time to enjoy a coffee prior to playing, or a beer once you have finished. With the guarantee of a warm welcome and the superb dining facilities, with food to suit most palates, we are sure you will have an enjoyable and memorable visit.

04. How to Find

BLYTH

Get onto the A189 (Northumberland Spine Rd) at the intersection with the A19. Turn off at the Junction signposted for Blyth Beach with a brown tourist sign. Follow the brown signs for the beach until you see the brown signs for the golf course.

Play Blyth and you’ll realise that there are some things in life that are still great value for money. Pound for pound the 6,400 yard 18 hole course on the outskirts of the seaport town in Northumberland has got to be the best days sport you’ll find for your hard earned cash. Developed on land where once stood a Pit Head and its entire mining community, Blyth has matured and developed into a tree lined parkland course with a par of 72- but don’t be fooled by its gently undulating character. Its first six holes are a test for any golfer and negotiate them without dropping too many shots and you can be set up for a good score.

But beware – there are some cunning water hazards on 9, 12, 13, and 14 that demand a strong nerve and a sure stroke. They don’t call the 13th “Sinkers” for nothing! Superb greens – many say the best in the county – will make your round one of the most pleasurable you’ll play in many a day. Following your round at Blyth Golf Club, please visit our friendly clubhouse where you will be looked after by our Steward, David Curry, ex European Tour Professional, Walker Cup Player and British Amateur Champion.

Facilities Bar, Restaurant, Putting Green, Practice Ground, Club Hire, Trolley Hire, Buggy hire, Lessons, Pro Shop Goswick Links Golf Club is undeniably a hidden gem of a course and is situated an hour from Newcastle and Edinburgh, and 5 miles south of Berwick upon Tweed.

The best tribute for Goswick has come from the R and A who, given the opportunity to make alterations for the Open Qualifier instructed the Club to” leave the course exactly as it was”

A James Braid masterpiece, widely acknowledged as a truly outstanding links course which is playable all year round. A regional qualifier for the Open championship this 6,803 yard par 72 course is a real test of golf and is a must play for the discerning golfer.

“As fine an inland course as you can find.” The words of Harry Vardon, designer of the original course, are as true today as they were in 1907 when he wrote them to the committee. The Spital course has a magnificent setting on the south bank of the Tyne, and makes full use of the rolling contours and thousands of mature trees to provide a course that is challenging enough to be a regular host of County and Regional events, both amateur and professional, and yet at 6,300 yards it is also enjoyable for the handicap golfer. The greens are regularly amongst the best in the County, and the views over the surrounding

Northumberland countryside are stunning. With its perfect setting, spectacular Georgian Grade One listed Clubhouse, and mouthwatering menus, Hexham Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the best venues in the region for corporate and society golf with many visitors returning year after year to enjoy the excellent facilities and warm welcome. Signature Hole: 18th, Par 4, 344 yards This magnificent closing hole requires a tough decision. Do you risk trying to drive the green or play safe? An accurate tee shot is needed, avoiding the out of bounds, with a large, heavily bunkered green as your final challenge.

Longhirst golf, known for having a beautiful relaxed setting, has an alluring layout with nice country views and undulating greens that add character to the golf courses. Scenic lakes, elevated tees and well placed bunkers provide interesting features that contribute to its excitement. Course conditions are known for being some of the best in Northumberland. Longhirst Hall Golf Course was opened in June 1997. This layout now plays as The Old Course, with full spec winter greens if required. It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive

downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. The Dawson Course is a more relaxing round of golf but can still give a bite if you’re not on your game. Wider fairways and large greens are more forgiving. Lakes and water feature in abundance again.

NEWBIGGIN

Newbiggin Golf Club is situated 2 miles from the main A189 road (Spine road) and is laid out along the Northumberland coastline forming a fine Links/Moorland course. For visitors traveling from the South, head North from the Tyne Tunnel to the North Seaton Roundabout, a distance of about 12 miles, and turn right (Eastwards) towards Newbiggin village, Travel through the village until you arrive at the end of the road. The Golf Club is located adjacent to the Church Point caravan park.

Newbiggin Golf Club is laid out over moorland at the north side of the village and follows the coast line towards Lynemouth. It is a links/ moorland course with many challenging holes which require a good drive from the tee to set up par opportunities. The greens are without doubt some of the best available in the whole of the northern counties. We do not use winter greens and can boast that even in the depths of Winter, when nearby courses are closed due to inclement weather, Newbiggin is almost always open to provide exciting golf, good food and excellent company afterwards. We pride ourselves on the

friendliness of both our Staff and members. They will certainly make you feel at home during your visit. Come and visit us and I’m sure your experience will be memorable. The 6th hole is one of our most challenging holes especially from the new back tees. It requires a true long drive to carry the gully (and miss the huge bunker) to give yourself a short iron to the hidden and very undulating green. Other players play left of the gully for safety but leave themselves a longer and more difficult approach shot to the green. When the wind is against this is one of the trickiest holes on the course.

WINTER GREEN FEES Midweek: £14 per round Midweek after 11.30: £12 per round Weekend / Bank Holidays: £18 per round Buggies £15 /round

Northumberland Golf Club

“We doubt you will find a more enjoyable example of a heath land course in the North of England.”

The Northumberland Golf Club is a members’ club situated in the pleasant surroundings of Gosforth Park, Newcastle upon Tyne close to the A1. Take the opportunity to play one of the courses selected to be a Regional Qualifier for the Open Championship from 2013. It comprises a 6,683 yard challenge designed by Harry Colt and James Braid. All 18 holes are of a level, heathland nature with the firm, fast greens a particular feature, all strategically protected by bunkers. It has a much deserved reputation as a course of exceptional quality and is regarded as one of the finest in the North of England. Gosforth

Park and its Nature Reserve surround the course. Deer are spotted regularly and other wildlife adds to its attraction. The Northumberland Golf Club is proud to have hosted many major events, both professional and amateur. These include the Dunlop Masters, the English Amateur championship, the British Youths Championship, The Commonwealth Ladies Tournament and most recently (in 2004) the English Boys Open Strokeplay Championship. The club has ambitious plans to return the course to its original Colt Design with its natural heathland grasses, and visiting golfers are warmly welcomed here throughout the year.

Course History At the beginning of 1898, the originators of the Club designed the course. The first major alteration to the course was in 1899, and this was dictated by the position of the clubhouse. The next major alteration was in 1905, when the new clubhouse was reerected at the west of Gosforth Park. At about this time H S Colt advised on the reconstruction of the course and much of this work was in progress when the 1914-18 War broke out. When the war was over James Braid visited the course and gave advice regarding certain alterations which were carried out immediately.

The Clubhouse The Northumberland Golf Club was formed in 1898 when members left a club on the Town Moor and leased land from High Gosforth Park to build a new course. A small clubhouse was built near the start of the straight mile. The present clubhouse was built in 1913, of a traditional style, in a magnificent

position nestling into the surrounding woods and with a view out over the course and High Gosforth Park. The Main Lounge is a spacious and impressive oak panelled room. Its large bay window has magnificent views down the 1st and 18th fairways and onto the 18th green. The Dining Room seats 70 and has views down the 18th fairway. It’s furniture was made by the famous ‘Mouseman’ of Kilburn, Yorkshire. The Card Room adjacent to the Main Lounge is suitable for informal card playing and as a formal meeting room. It is available for hire by members. The Mixed Lounge has views over the 1st tee and 18th fairway and green. It is used by Ladies on a Tuesday and mainly as a bar for large visiting parties. The Sun Lounge has views over the 18th fairway and green. It is used by large visiting parties and is available for hire by members as a meeting room.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

TRAVEL FEATURE

Bulgaria Where three is the magic number When somebody like Gary Player, who has over 325 design projects around the globe, says “you will not find a golf course like this anywhere else on the planet” you need to take a closer look and that’s exactly what we did.

Our Balkan Holidays flight, from Manchester airport, arrived in Bulgaria on-time and the 3 hour 50 minutes flight seemed to pass quickly. From Varna airport the transfer time is just 45 minutes to Cape Kaliakra. Thracian Cliffs Golf and Beach Resort, along with Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort and BlackSeaRama Golf and Villas make up the Cape Kaliakra Signature Golf Coast. The three courses are all within 5 miles of each other and transfers to and from each resort can easily be pre-arranged. The first four-days of our 7 day trip was spent at the luxury five-star Thracian Cliffs Golf and Beach Resort, and our Villa suite overlooked the 18th hole lake, course and the Black Sea. The resort has two sandy beaches, the guests’ only Argata Beach, which has hammocks and four poster beds in the sea, and is much more secluded. The other is the Bendida Beach which is 1.5Km long and is open to all guests. This golf resort caught our eye nearly 12 months ago and we have been following its progress ever since, so, to say we were a little excited to finally play the course would be an understatement. Our afternoon tee time couldn’t come quick enough and as we loaded our buggy I could feel the excitement building. After a short drive, passing the grass driving range and impeccable practice area, we were finally at the first tee and, like every hole, it offers stunning views of the coastal cliffs and the vast blue sea, which stretches out as far as the eyes can see. Sometimes in life the

expectation doesn’t live up to the reality but, thankfully, this did and more. The 18-hole Gary Player Signature Golf Course is spread over 85 hectares of truly beautiful Cliffside terrain, and has been sculptured to fit perfectly into the landscape and provides golfers with one of the most wonderful golfing experiences imaginable. Gary Player named this course the “Pebble Beach of Europe” and with an abundance of sea and dramatic Cliffside views from every hole, it is easy to see why. The course provides a tough challenge to any golfer due to both its length and difficulty but it has been designed to be enjoyed by all. Its modern layout means there are several teeing options on every hole. It can be argued that every hole on this course is a signature hole but the 6th is the one that will live long in the memory bank afterwards. The sixth tee box is some 40 meters above the large green which has been cut into the hillside and is surrounded by the lapping waves of the Black Sea. The 7th hole was also a favourite of ours. The teeing box can be found on a small island and provides a fantastic view of the surrounding sea and cliffs. A carry of 150 yards over the sea to find the fairway is truly magical and upon doing so puts a spring in your step for the holes to come. The course is not a walking course because there is a fair distance from each green to the next tee. Due to this a buggy is always included

within the green fee. The buggies include a drinks cooler compartment, a ball cleaner and club cleaner device. A refreshment buggy is constantly on the go, serving refreshments and of course bottled beer which costs about £1.20. All you need to worry about, is hitting the ball straight and enjoying the wonderful views. The greens are very large and invite you to attack them and to go for that birdie putt, but be warned; you could end up facing a 50ft plus putt on a number of occasions. For a course that is barely a year old, the attention to detail is faultless. Its strategically placed tee boxes mean it can be enjoyed by any golfer no matter what their playing level is at. When playing the first eight holes you will need to make sure you don’t push any stray shots to the right because the Black Sea below will claim them forever. It is worth noting that you need to be careful when approaching the red stakes because sometimes they are all that stands between you and a 100ft drop or more to the beach below. There are a number of drop zones placed on the course, which could easily be missed, so it is worth checking in the pro-shop as to which holes have them. Overall, the course grabs you and takes you on a journey that you won’t forget, regardless of how many rounds you play. The course gets full marks and we would, without hesitation, definitely come back and play this course again and again. Having had our fill at Thracian Cliffs Golf and Beach Resort it was time to head out and spend

the remaining three nights at the five-star Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort. The resort is just a five minute drive from Thracian Cliffs. The Lighthouse offers a multitude of accommodation options including 6 luxurious presidential suites, 12 club double rooms and 156 superior twin, double and studio rooms. There are also five unique private hamlets which have been beautifully sculpted to complement their surroundings. The Ian Woosnam designed course at the Lighthouse is geared towards the shorter hitters and in some ways brings a welcome respite from the dominating Thracian Cliffs golf course. It is an open-plan parkland type course with wide fairways and little rough to speak of. There are three teeing options and we picked the middle one but they didn’t prove that difficult to score on but it is fair to say the course is slightly tough in parts but plays fairly. There are several holes that could be classed as signature holes including the 10th hole which has a tricky dog-leg and a lake which will swallow any wayward tee-shot. Another great hole is the 14th which is a tricky par 3 and offers some great views. The closing 5 holes are possibly the best ones on the course. The facilities at the Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort include an indoor swimming pool, which is attached to the fantastic Spa and Wellness centre, and offers some respite from the hot summer sun. Within the Spa area guests can enjoy a steam bath, Laconium, Jacuzzi, gym, Hammam, Finnish and Infrared Sauna plus much more.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

For those sun worshippers, you can laze by the huge outdoor swimming pool or head down to the luxurious private beach, complete with bar, which is connected to the resort by a private path or you can chose to use the free shuttle bus.

hole, and also surrounds one side of the green, thus making for a tricky approach shot. The 5th hole is a beauty, a short par 3 but it is a challenging hole with water running all the way to the green. Overall water comes into play on five of the holes.

We decided to explore the seaside town of Balchik which is approximately £10.00 in a taxi and about 6km from the Lighthouse resort. The front promenade offers a few bars and restaurants and if you call in at Hemmingway’s they can arrange boat trips and excursions. Typically a sea fishing or boat trip will cost £50 for one hour for up to eight people. The cost of a pint here is about £1.10 and we would recommend visiting here during the day.

The back nine starts strong enough but the last four holes, which are arguably the best holes on the course, could make or break your round. The finishing 18th is a magnificent signature par 3 hole, which tees over a valley, and plays around 240 yards from the back tee. Overall, the greens are immaculate and the fairways are both varied in size and difficulty. The rough, which surrounds the course, is just waiting to claim any wayward shot; like any true links course should do.

We didn’t stay at BlackSeaRama but we had the pleasure of experiencing the ‘links’ type course which has hosted the European Boys Challenge in 2009. In the same year the course received the ‘best new international course’, high praise indeed. From the Lighthouse hotel the BlackSeaRama course is only a two minute buggy ride away. Opened in 2008, and occupying a clifftop setting along the edge of the sea, this links course offers golfers an exceptional and memorable experience. The course at BlackSeaRama carries an air of quality and is another great Gary Player designed course, which shows a maturity beyond its early years. The course opens up with two straight forward holes, whilst the third, a short par 4, offers the chance to put a three on the card. Water runs down the left side of the fairway on the fourth

We had the pleasure of meeting two welltravelled gentleman, Keith and Ray, who are members at Portal and Flixton Golf Club respectively. Both said they would come back again and we think this speaks volumes about the quality of the golfing scene at Cape Kaliakra’s Signature Golf Coast. Golfing at Cape Kaliakra offers three fantastic golf courses, luxury accommodation and above all excellent value for money.
