COVER FEATURE
Oakdale is the perfect course for a visitor to Harrogate to enjoy.
Oakdale Golf Club Excellence in golf for 100 years There is an old story about an American visitor to an English stately home who asked the gardener how he managed to get lawns in such good condition. “Easy”, replied the gardener. “You just rake it over, seed it, wait for it to grow and then mow it for 300 years.” Oakdale Golf Club celebrates its Centenary Year in 2014, but after only 100 years of mowing the results on the course are excellent. Set in the valley of Oak Beck, the golf course is a hidden delight. Although it is the only 18-hole golf course to lie entirely within the town boundary of Harrogate, visitors are constantly surprised
that, having arrived through the houses of the Duchy Estate, they then look out from the Clubhouse onto a parkland idyll. In the Middle Ages and long before the small settlements of High Harrogate and Low Harrogate merged, the Forest of Knaresborough with its oak woods and hunting chase once stretched away to the west. Concealed in the trees beyond the 10th green is a 17th century packhorse bridge still in excellent condition, an echo of trading routes long forgotten. Although it is situated close to the centre of town, the course is remarkably quiet. The
nearest road passes its western boundary and carries only light traffic. Because of this, bird song is heard clearly all around despite the predations of the resident Red Kite. Golfers can be treated to the sudden appearance of a fox or deer or the electric blue flash of a kingfisher on the wing. In 1914, Dr Alister MacKenzie was retained to put together a layout for a 9-hole course for immediate play whilst continuing to develop the 18-hole course. Dr MacKenzie has since become a legend in golf course design the world over, famously including

tees. The Ladies’ red tee course measures just over 5,500 yards. The first tee treats the golfer to a clear elevated view of the straight fairway starting the round. Having taken in the view, it is advisable to keep one’s eye on the ball when teeing off to avoid topping it into Oak Beck. That aside, the first hole is a settling par 4 start to an interesting and diverse course including five holes par 3 and four holes par 5. Set in 130 acres mainly along one side of a valley, the course design combines elements of both parkland and moorland. It is economical, with minimal walking times between greens and their
Royal Melbourne, Cypress Point and Augusta National, home of The Masters. Since 1914 there have been modifications to his Oakdale course as the town has expanded around it but the essence of that original design has been preserved. From the Clubhouse balcony, visitors get their first impression of the course as the view takes in the 18th, 1st, 9th, and 10th fairways in turn, bordered by trees, and each one cut through by Oak Beck to trap the unwary. From the white tees, the course is almost 6,500 yards long, some 400 yards longer than from the yellow
following tees. Whilst the course can be quite forgiving, it still commands respect with its fair share of bunkers, water hazards, rough and spinneys lying in wait for a careless shot. After a round, the golfer can enjoy the facilities of the Clubhouse, relax in the lounge or on the balcony, savour excellent food and, if so minded, sample fine local ales. Steve Robins breaks into the Yorkshire squad
England bank on Barclay for Italian job
Club champion of Hull GC, Steve Robins has just broke into the Yorkshire squad. He plays off +3, and is probably the hottest golfer in Yorkshire this year. He recently won the East Riding Union Matchplay Championship at Ganton GC, beating Ryan Gray, a scratch handicapper, 11&9 in the 36 hole final. Steve is pictured the day after he played and won the Fulford McKenzie Tournament (Yorkshire order of merit 36 hole event) with rounds of 74 and 72.
Dean retains his Westwood Crown
England A squad player Joe Dean set a tournament record to retain the Lee Westwood Trophy at Rotherham Golf Cup last night. The 20-year-old Lindrick star led from the start in the 72-hole world-ranking event and never looked like relinquishing his grasp on the silverware he won last year. His record score of 266 was one shot lower than previous best set by Gary Wolstenholme in 2008 which was some achievement considering
the blustery conditions on a tough course. His 12-shot margin of victory over England A squad teammates Robert Burlison of Oxley Park and Meltham’s Jamie Bower summed up Dean’s play over the week. Never over par, his four rounds of 67, 64, 65 and 70 included a low that was only 2 off the course record. The 20 year old said: “ I played steadily all week. The driver was working well and the putts dropped.” He started the final round yesterday afternoon 11 shots ahead at 14 under par but a bogey at the first tested his nerve. He steadied the ship with four pars and the four birdies that followed finally put the result beyond any doubt. Despite scoring two double bogies in the round he recorded five consecutive 3s on the back nine. “I was probably a bit too relaxed at the start of the final round which is why I started with a bogey. But I stuck to my game and continued to be aggressive because it had worked all week.” Dean a +2 handicapper at the start of the tournament, has set himself the ambition of reaching the 2015 Walker Cup squad before considering turning professional. “I will definitely remain amateur next year but will be looking for a quick start and hope to get a sniff at the Walker Cup but it will not be the all and end all if I don’t make it.” The Lee Westwood Trophy is one of England’s top amateur events held annually at Rotherham Golf Club. This year was the 10th event and was competed by a full field of 141 players from all over the UK. It also attracted players from Abu Dhabi, Hong Hong and two young men Chen Chen and Sen Cao who had travelled from China with their coach David Watson for their first experience of UK golf.
Barclay Brown (Hallamshire, Yorkshire), winner of the inaugural North of England under 14 Junior Open Stroke Play Championship at South Moor Golf Club recently, has been selected among four players for the Italian International under 16 Championship at Biella Golf Club on 2nd – 4th September. The other three are Alex Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire, Yorkshire), Rhys NevinWharton (Sandiway, Cheshire) and Luke Northwood (Kenilworth, Warwickshire). Brown, only 13 years old, carded a twounder-par opening round of 70 to lead by three at South Moor then added a 74 before torrential rain and thunderstorms made the Durham course unplayable and the tournament was reduced to 36 holes. Fitzpatrick, 15, the younger brother of 2013 US Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, finished third in last year’s Douglas Johns Trophy but went two better this year, winning by one stroke. Nevin-Wharton, 16, finished tied third in the Northern Counties Boys Qualifying, fourth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and equal fifth in the Cheshire Stroke Play Championship. Northwood (image copyright Leaderboard Photography), 15, a member of the England Regional under 16 Coaching Squad for the West Midlands, finished runner-up in this year’s McGregor Trophy, the English Boys under 16 Championship, at Radcliffe-onTrent and like Brown and Fitzpatrick, this will be his maiden overseas assignment for England Golf. The Italian under 16 Championship is played over 72 holes of stroke play with a cut after 36, the leading 40 players and ties qualifying for the final two rounds.

Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club
Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club, County Durham’s leading golf resort and hotel, has announced that its new 18-hole championship golf course - The Cathedral Course - will open for play in September 2014.
The 7,200 yard par 72 course, designed by Jonathan Gaunt of Gaunt Golf Design, is the only new championship standard 18-hole golf course to open in England this year. The North East’s newest course takes its name from Durham Cathedral – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s greatest architectural wonders – clearly visible from hole 3, the stretch between 8 and 11 and again when playing the 15th and 17th. The new golf course is part of a £15m development taking place at Ramside Hall Hotel which includes an expansion of the four star hotel, construction of 34 executive residential homes, a new health club, gym, 25 metre swimming pool, spa, restaurant and beauty salon. Work is currently underway on the hotel expansion, spa and health club and completion is planned for early 2015. Ramside Hall Estates director, John Adamson, said: “Our vision is for Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club to become a complete golf and leisure destination at the heart of North East England
attracting members, visitors and hotel guests to enjoy sport, fitness, relaxation, fine food and beautiful surroundings. The new Cathedral Course is one of the most eagerly anticipated golf developments in the UK. It is laid out in a special setting across a hilltop, rolling valley and through mature parkland with views of Durham Cathedral and the Angel of the North – and promises to be one of the most desired tee-times in the region.” Ramside announces Membership price freeze Ramside Golf Club is freezing its annual golf membership fees for 2014 at £905 (including V.A.T) and £6000 for corporate memberships, for golf on both the Cathedral and its Prince Bishops Course and expects demand for membership to increase following the opening of the Cathedral course in July. “It’s likely that the Cathedral Course will generate a lot of interest in membership at Ramside Golf Club. In order to acknowledge the loyalty of our existing members and manage demand for golf on both championship golf courses we will
be introducing a joining fee for new members for the 2015 season, beginning in September,” added Mr. Adamson. The golf course is now complete and a soft opening took place in July. Nine interchangeable holes were open for play and the remaining nine open in September, allowing the warmer summer months to help new turf, grasses and fescue rough to bed down. About the Cathedral Course Ramside has created a landmark golf course in broad rolling countryside near historic Durham City. The course has nine manmade lakes, rolling high-sided fairways, wispy fescue grass and bunkers resembling green and gold waves rearing up from the earth. The course begins and ends in mature parkland close to Ramside Hall Hotel. The land was previously used for a third loop of nine holes which have been completely redesigned into a thrilling start and a finish designed to deliver drama and excitement. The mid-section of the course is laid out across

a high plateau, formerly ‘Hilltop Farm’ with wide-open skies and 360 views, then drops down into a striking valley with dramatic changes in elevation, mature trees, steep banksides and a coursing beck. The hilltop holes are exposed to the elements and a prevailing South Westerly wind. Here, the greens take on a links-like look and feel. They sit proudly, elevated as if part of the horizon, and are protected by clever run-offs, swales and false fronts more often found in seaside golf. The putting surfaces are all large, measuring more than 700 square metres each and are firm, fast and undulating. The Angel of the North, the iconic bronze coloured statue which stands at the gateway to Newcastle, can be seen from the 15th tee. The ‘valley holes’ are peaceful and quiet, tranquil even, with only the sound of birdsong to disturb concentration. Here, two beautiful par-threes interchange with a pair of muscular par-fives, defended by well-placed fairway and greenside bunkers.
The 8th hole returns you to the big skies of the exposed hilltop and the spine of the course. Holes 8,9 and 10 are long par-fours where lakes wait to grab errant drives and approaches. Here, your gaze shifts to Durham’s Cathedral and you feel a sense of space, freedom and possibly spirituality. These holes promise to be a spectacular place to watch sunsets. Touched by the Masters The Cathedral course is influenced heavily by location but also by one of the world’s greatest golf courses, Augusta National, home of ‘The Masters’. Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner.’ The downhill par-three 12th bears an uncanny resemblance to its famous counterpart in Georgia but instead of Rae’s Creek, fast flowing Sherburn Beck stands guard at the front of the green. The shape and challenge of the hole is inspired by Augusta’s iconic short hole and the same is true of the par-four 13th and the dramatic par-
five 13th at The Masters. Sherburn Beck skirts the entire length of the hole just like Rae’s Creek does in Georgia. The finishing stretch combines two gentle parfour holes with a fiendishly difficult 452-yard 17th hole. The route to the hole is punctuated by several lakes, fairway bunkers, encroaching trees and a difficult green. The 18th is a 236-yard par three with a trio of lakes to navigate before you reach the safety of a huge undulating green. Jonathan Gaunt has now created two exceptional golf courses at County Durham’s leading golf resort. The Prince Bishops course is established as one of the finest golf courses in North East England and is a great test of risk and reward golf. Ramside’s new Cathedral layout is a truly thorough test of golf in a location blessed by views, drama and more than a touch of spirituality.

Super Leagues Best Golfer at Cookridge Hall
Celebrating its third birthday this year Super Leagues Best Golfer saw 28 of the games biggest names descend upon Cookridge Hall in Leeds to compete for the one title they all want the bragging rights too. Since launching the event close friends Super League Legend Richard Mathers and Cookridge Hall Golf Club General Manager Gary Day, retained their ambition of making the event not only successful but to grow it every year. After yet another hugely successful event their ambitions certainly seem to be coming to fruition having seen an impressive line up of Super League players, huge media coverage and an abundance of teams entered for the 2014 event. “It has been extremely hard work in the run up to the event” Day commented, whilst plans started back in November of last year, it always becomes chaos as we near the day with training schedules changing and injuries ruling players out. I suppose it’s the nature of the beast we are dealing with as Richie and I watched each and every game in the run up to the day praying the lads don’t take a knock and have to withdraw”. “The response from the players this year has been fantastic” Mathers added, personally I was overwhelmed by the support the lads put
forward and although I know they want to win it is great for me to see so many of my friends supporting the event. Super Leagues Best Golfer remains a unique event where fans are invited to enter teams to play alongside players from their respective supported teams, this year saw Danny McGuire, Ryan Hall, Gareth Ellis, Bennie Westwood and of course Richie Mathers all competing, it provides a great opportunity to rub shoulders with and chat all things Super League to some of the games greats. Whilst the purpose of the event is to identify the best golfer for the year, Mathers and Day place a great deal of emphasis of raising funds for charity. Previous years Joining Jack and Children’s Ward L42 at LGI have been the benefactors. This year proved no different as the event proudly supported The Steve Prescott Foundation and St Gemmas Hospice. The event received a huge boost only weeks prior to the event, when Hull based Martin Dixon Ltd, owned by father of Castleford Tiger, Kirk Dixon proudly sponsored the event. Martin’s involvement not only raised the profile of the event further but helped significantly in raising funds for both charities as did Sytner Audi of Wakefield whom donated a prize of an Audi A6 for the weekend promptly won by
Leeds Rhinos Ryan Hall in the popular chipping competition across the 18th lake. With the TV cameras rolling it was left to Danny Kirmond, Wakefield Wildcats Captain to strike the first shot and get the event underway. As you would imagine a competitive afternoon ensued with Tommy Lee setting the early pace having covered his first nine holes in level par only to falter coming down the stretch to return 31 points. Jordan Tansey of Castleford Tigers started the event as one of the favourites and led in the clubhouse with 38 points only to be pipped by a virgin Super Leagues Best Golfer James Donaldson. Donaldson having recently left Bradford Bulls for Hull KR discovered only hours earlier he was entered for the event and like a true champion returned 42 points to take the honours. For the record Richard Mathers put in a sterling performance and alongside his playing partner and good friend Danny McGuire both returned a respectable 30 pts. To close the evening Cookridge Hall welcomed BBC’s Tanya Arnold who hosted the evenings presentation and interviews announcing that the event had raised is excess of £3,000 for both charities. As the event continues to go from strength to strength we look forward already to 2015.

North East golf club backing national drive A prominent North East golf club is backing a national drive that aims to improve playing skills and boost body and mind wellbeing - in just five hours. Brancepeth Castle Golf Club - ranked in the top 100 in Britain and Ireland – says the ‘Get into golf’ initiative can bring fast health benefits through participants being out and about on the fairways and greens. The programme, rolled out by England Golf, the country’s governing body, provides five cut-price one-hour lessons in basic skills – and is designed to lead to greater participation in the sport. But England Golf insists the scheme is not only capable of making better players of novices and those who have lost their touch, but can bring many and varied health benefits. Research has shown that regular rounds can lead to weight loss, reduced blood pressure, and muscle toning – and can also cut stress and lengthen life expectancy by up to five years. And the Durham club’s PGA professional David Fletcher agrees, having seen thousands of
players over the years cover around 6,000 metres over 18 holes, losing more than 1,000 calories in the process. David, 44, said: “There are huge health benefits to playing golf. I’ve seen enthusiasts return to the clubhouse physically rejuvenated and less stressed. “Being out and about on a course for a number of hours can very much help you get in shape. Walking so far and the effort involved in playing burns an awful lot of calories. “In turn, it can also bring many other health benefits, and it also a very social and competitive sport which constantly throws up new challenges. “I would urge anyone who is looking for a greatly enjoyable and recreational way of staying fit to come along and try out ‘Get into golf’.” The five sessions at Brancepeth Castle, usually in a group of up to six players, costs £25 per person, and equipment can be provided. David will provide discounted follow on lessons upon request as either individual or group
bookings, which are among a range of specialist playing packages being offered by the club, which was founded in 1924 and underwent a £160,000 improvement and upgrading programme in 2013. New equipment was introduced at the club, which has a membership of around 700, including about 60 female golfers with handicaps. Those who participate in ‘Get into golf’ can also enjoy practice-only membership at £75 per year which provides access to the clubhouse and practice facilities. Limited beginner ‘Pay and Play’ costs £180, and can be followed up by full or five-day membership. More information on ‘Get into Golf’ at Brancepeth Castle Golf Club is available by contacting David on 0191 378 4115 or via ‘Get into golf’ at http://getintogolf.org/ More information on Brancepeth Castle Golf Club is on 0191 378 0075, by visiting www.brancepeth-castle-golf.co.uk, or at enquiries@brancepeth-castle-golf.co.uk.

The signature hole is the 14th with the River Tees all the way down the right hand side of the fairway. Several strategic bunkers and one or two large trees have to be negotiated before
arriving at a testing green. Remember all putts go towards the river! Another classic is the par three 17th hole which is 174 yards downhill with water at the front of a two tiered green. There can be a three club difference on any given day depending on the pin placement. All members take a 3 here and gladly move on. Eaglescliffe regularly hosts regional and county events and holds Gents, Ladies and Mixed Open competitions throughout the year. Visiting Parties, both large and small, are especially welcome with many options available to suit individual requirements. The Club was also one of the first in the area to hold the ‘GolfMark’ accreditation and welcomes all junior golfers and their families. Your first port of call upon arrival should be the
Club Shop which will cater for all your golfing needs. Buggies are available and there are excellent locker room facilities. The Clubhouse at Eaglescliffe excels with topclass catering service for golfers and visitors alike. The facilities available include a main lounge that can hold over 100 people dining in comfort and a restaurant that can cater for up to 60 covers. There is plenty of room to relax and have a beer after your round and even a snooker table to try in the Club’s 19th bar. Conference room facilities are available offering opportunities for corporate groups and businesses to hold workshops and seminars allied to the wonderful backdrop of the course and the Cleveland Hills. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
North Yorkshire Introduction
North Yorkshire North Yorkshire is England’s largest county with an area of more than 800,000 hectares to explore. The county is fascinating, and no matter what your interest or time to spare, offers a huge range of activities and attractions. The county of North Yorkshire stretches across Northern England from its spectacular coastline in the East, across Moors and fertile valleys to the Dales in the West, and attracts millions of tourists who flock to see its traditional market towns, beautiful countryside and historic sites. The county’s greatest asset is its wonderful scenery, whether
it is the NorthYork Moors, to be enjoyed on foot, by car or steam railway or the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales. Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people’s living rooms across the world by the success of television series such as the stories of James Herriot and the Heartbeat adventures. Along the 45 miles of coastline there are the traditional resorts of Scarborough and Filey and Whitby. The ruins of monasteries scatter the county at places such as Rievaulx, Jervaulx and Fountains Abbey - a World Heritage site.
The Harrogate District is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, flourishing towns, villages and heritage sites. Harrogate has a rich spa history, combined with parks, gardens and floral displays. Close by is the medieval market town of Knaresborough, famous for its 14th Century ruined castle and Mother Shiptons Cave. There are also spectacular memories of bygone days in North Yorkshire with magnificent structures which have stood for centuries. Selby Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are two of the finest examples of English architecture to be found anywhere in the world. North Yorkshire is indeed a land of diversity.

The original Manor forms the basis of what is now the Aldwark Manor Golf & Spa Hotel which sits in the picturesque Vale of York surrounded by the Aldwark Manor Golf Course. Set in 120 acres of parkland around a 19th century manor, our par 72, easy walking 6187 yard course is set in the beautiful Vale of York. The River Ure meanders through the course and comes into play on several holes. This coupled with other water hazards makes Aldwark Manor a challenge to golfers
of all abilities. Although not a long course, a premium is put on accuracy and the course offers plenty of risk and reward shots. Signature Holes: Hole 10 471 yards Par 5 After a well struck shot from the tee the second demands a long iron over a water hazard to a guarded green. Play it safe or go for an eagle? This Championship links course, is situated by the shores of the North Sea and measures 6750 yards from the white tees with a par 72. The Ladies play from red tees all the year round and their course measures 5545 yards with a par 73. The course itself is flat and easy to walk. It is protected by strategically placed bunkers both on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, and in common with many Championship links courses, it is a true test of golf when the wind blows. The club have hosted many County and Professional events and is the home to the
Amateur scratch competitions the Cleveland Salver and the Mid Amateur International. Signature Hole Hole 11, ‘Ridges’, Par 4, 429 yards (White Tee) Par 4 with a ridge to negotiate from the tee shot, fairly straight hole with a well guarded green. A water hazard is on the right side of the rough however it has to be a very wayward shot to catch it. Professionals Tip: Keep to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this will open the green up, for your second shot the middle of the green is always a good option, get to greedy and you may pay the consequences.

Regarded as one of the finest tests of inland golf, the course is frequently graded in the Top 100 and is built on predominantly sandy heathland, which drains exceptionally well and provides an excellent surface for all year round golf. The greens, which were voted ‘’best on the European Tour’’, remain consistent throughout the year, and the course drains well during the winter.
The course is flat and tree lined, with heather and well placed bunkers providing the hazards. The course is a good challenge for all golfers. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4. ‘Langer’ The line from the tee is down the left hand side of the fairway, possibly using a long iron to avoid running into the small trees. This allows an easy pitch over Germany Beck into the welcoming green. The approach from the right is blocked by a large oak requiring a high shot if you are to make the green. Watch out for the ash tree by the left side of the green made famous by Bernhard Langers ‘tree’ shot in 1981

At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on York Rd/A59. Continue to follow A59. Turn left onto Bond End/A59. Continue to follow A59. The course is on your left at the top of the hill.
Located only 2 miles from the centre of the famous spa town, Harrogate Golf Club is a mature parkland course in a picturesque setting and benefits from spectacular floral displays in the Spring.
The course layout penalises any golfer who strays off the fairway, subtly placed bunkers and copses of trees require the golfer to adopt careful thought and accuracy in order to better the par.
The current course measures a little less than 6250 yards and is on fairly flat terrain. It is widely regarded as a fair test of golf, requiring accuracy rather than distance off the tee. Its Mackenzie style greens and tree-lined fairways provide an enjoyable challenge for all handicaps. The course is invariably presented in first class condition and many visiting parties come back year after year.
Signature Holes: Hole 12: A beautiful Par 3 designed by MacKenzie in 1910 and played from a raised multi level tee. The green is a tricky read for the most experienced golfer, yet it is the hole that registers the most holes-in-one each year. Hole 13: Set amidst one of the most scenic parts of the course, this long Par 4 is truly a pleasure to play.

Signature Holes Like all courses, Kirkbymoorside has its signature holes. Whatever your handicap the ‘right to left’ drive from the 7th tee will provide a true test to those seeking par and the 10th is not named the ‘widow maker’ for nothing. It’s a tough drive on the par four 13th, but the view from the tee out to the moors past the village of Gillamoor, makes even the poorest tee shot (almost) forgettable.

The course was officially opened in April 1939 and in 1990, new holes were laid through acquired woodland to give it the layout as it is today.

Situated in countryside five miles south of Middlesbrough the course has stunning views of the Cleveland Hills and is a joy to play as many have found, not least many of the
country’s top young players who arrive every year to play in the North of England Youths Open – a tournament started and run by the club themselves which has grown to attract national and international backing from the major golf bodies. A 16-year-old Sandy Lyle and Richard Boxall are among the winners of what is rated a very prestigious tournament. There are many attractive and challenging holes, the tree-lined short 4th (197 yards), the dog-leg 11th around or over Oakwood (522 yards), the 8th which has been described by many visitors as one of the most attractive holes they have played.

Renowned for its famous Spa Baths and visitor attractions, there are many reasons to visit Harrogate, but none are more valid than the opportunity to try out the sensational course at Oakdale Golf Club, bizarrely, within a ten minute walk of the town. Established in 1914 and designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Oakdale’s unique mix of moor and parkland has earned it a reputation to rival even the very best venues in Northern England. Moreover, few facilities offer such a close tie with accommodation in the adjacent town centre, providing the
ideal stay and play situation. At just under 6,500 yards, the course offers a true test to golfers of varying abilities, generous fairways and beautiful scenery abounds. Set in 130 acres of naturally undulating terrain, you can expect to come across a diverse range of wildlife, with foxes and roe deer a common sight. With no two holes the same, it’s a well know fact that scoring at Oakdale depends on how well you negotiate the par 3s with both the 9th and 12th protected by water.
Oakdale Golf Club celebrates its Centenary in 2014. Be part of the party, memberships still available & visitors most welcome. Check on the website www.oakdalegolfclub.co.uk for details of our Lifestyle package.

An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. Each of the partners plays an active role in the day-to-day operation of the Golf Course and at least one partner is usually on-site at most times of the day.
The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Signature Holes You can enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside on this course but remember to pay as much attention to the 9th and 10th holes. The 9th is a tricky par-3 with an approach to a severely guarded green, whilst the 10th includes a dog leg and an approach over water.
Including the newly created indoor teaching studio Packages designed specifically for ‘New to Golf’ as well as those seasoned players, please call or look at our website for full details.

SCARBOROUGH NORTH CLIFF

13. How to Find Directions From A64: Head South on A64 towards Scarborough. Turn left onto B1258 the B1258 turns slightly right and becomes A170 Continue to follow A170. Go through 1 roundabout , at the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Stepney Drive. Sharp left onto Scalby Road / A171 turn right onto Green Lane continue onto Cross Lane. Go through 1 roundabout. Continue onto North Cliff Avenue.
Facilities Although Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club dates back to 1909, the present course was designed by James Braid and established in 1928. The course starts on the cliff top and then moves inland threading its way between trees and spinneys, with lovely views of the North Yorkshire Moors before returning to the cliff top for the final three holes. The course is sufficiently undulating to be interesting without being excessively hilly and is a tough but fair test for golfers of all abilities. With the prevailing wind from the west the first five holes provide a stiff test of golf and par on these holes is a good start.
The short 7th and the par 5s at 8 and 9 provide some respite before the next major test “Amen corner” (10, 11 and 12) is tackled. Hole 10 requires a long straight drive and the 11th is a memorable hole played from an elevated tee over water to a green surrounded by trees. The 12th is a testing dogleg played around trees to the right to a raised green. The 13th and 14th are birdie chances as the course winds its way back to the 15th tee where once again the sea comes into view. The homeward run has glorious sea views across the North Bay towards the Castle before arriving back at the Clubhouse where a welcome drink awaits.
Clubhouse with free car parking and breathtaking views or Scarborough Castle and North Bay where members and their guests can relax and enjoy a meal, snack or refreshments in our extensive catering and bar facilities.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
West Yorkshire Introduction
West Yorkshire West Yorkshire has a great deal to offer visitors to the county with its heritage attractions, grand stately homes, green open spaces, canals, towns and cities. Composed of the districts of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, a network of paths and cycle-ways both in towns and the countryside allow for easy access to the many sites of interest. Leeds – once the hub of the North based on its manufacturing and textile industries, is now a leading vibrant legal, finance and retail centre by day and lively cosmopolitan city by night. Award winning restaurants, wine bars, music venues, theatres and art galleries offer
a vast array of entertainment to satisfy any appetite. Vanguard architectural sites such as Bridgewater Place, 1 City Square and the Waterfront properties sit comfortably with the historic structures of the Corn Exchange and Leeds Kirkgate Market. An exciting retail experience is on offer with the likes of Harvey Nichols nestling next to the renowned Victoria Quarter, boasting an abundance of boutiques as well as well-known high street names. Leeds is also the sporting home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the most decorated Club in County Cricket History, and of course the celebrated Leeds United Football Club.
Proud of its long and important history, Bradford is home to a number of important historical buildings and sites; including one of only two World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire, and the most visited museum outside of London. The city has a lively multicultural vibe with a variety of diversions including the esteemed Bradford Alhambra Theatre. From a golfing perspective, West Yorkshire is home to some of the best inland courses in Britain. Included in this list are Alwoodley, Moortown and Moor Allerton who all sit proudly in the list of the top 100 courses in England.

Laid out in 1899, our Par 71 Championship Course can justly claim to be one of the oldest in Yorkshire and provides a real challenge for golfers of all handicaps. Set out in 6,300 yards, it is a moorland links which commands stunning views over Baildon and Rombald Moors. Two special features, Greenhouse Hill and Birkin Hill, have irregular contours and accommodate the testing Par 4 10th and Par 3 14th, both of which require accurate shots to well protected greens. The course runs in two loops with the 10th hole and 18th hole each finishing outside the
Clubhouse. Many holes are played along welldefined, tree-lined fairways to spacious, but fast and testing greens with subtle borrows. Always in immaculate condition, the course has recently undergone an impressive £1 million improvement programme to ensure that it remains pristine and playable throughout the seasons in all but the most adverse weather conditions. The course continues to be used for many prestigious Yorkshire Championships and is the home of The Hawksworth Trophy, a 36hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers in Northern England.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.
The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.
It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
After playing why not visit our Clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality. It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.

Golf was first played at Bradley Hall in July 1906 when a group of local men started playing on a small piece of rented land near to the present course. The popularity expanded until in 1922 an opportunity presented itself to aquire the lease on the run-down Bradley Hall together with over 100 acres of land from Lord Mexborough.

08. How to Find
Our 18-hole parkland course is situated on the north side of Leeds and is one of the best golf clubs in Yorkshire. Founded in 1896 it is the original home of the Leeds Cup, the oldest trophy in professional golf. Set in approximately 80 acres, our stunning course challenges golfers of all ages and abilities. Only four miles from the city centre and close to the Leeds Ring Road, the course has a distinctly tranquil feel with many of the holes commanding spectacular views of Roundhay. Leeds Golf Club offers something for everyone - men, women, seniors and juniors, from experienced players to those who have
never picked up a golf club before. We also welcome corporate members and golf societies who wish to visit our wonderful course. We have a relatively low number of full members compared to other courses which enables you to play at your time of choice on most days. Signature Hole: Hole 7, Par 4, 385 yards (White Tee) One of the most dramatic holes on the course. Aim your tee shot between the fairway bunkers. The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.
The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

11. How to Find
SHIPLEY
Travelling from Bradford: Exit the M62 at the M606 junction. Follow the M606 until the end. Take the A650 towards Shipley, Keighley and Skipton. Go through Shipley and Saltaire still heading towards Bingley, Keighley and Skipton. Keep straight on following signs to Wilsden/Cottingley (B6265). At the traffic lights after the roundabout keep in the right hand lane following signs to Bingley. After about ¼ mile, pass Kiddicreche Nursery on the left. Just after this turn left on to Beckfoot Lane. The Golf Club entrance is 200 yards on the left. Set amidst a wonderful wooded valley on the outskirts of Bingley, the course is the creation of the renowned architect Dr Alister Mackenzie of Augusta fame. Stretching across the rolling valley floor of Beckfoot this traditional parkland, visually stunning course provides golfers of any standard with a test of their skill and accuracy. The Shipley Golf Club is proud of the standard of its facilities and whatever the time of year you can be sure to find firm fairways, true greens and an idyllic environment. Much of Dr MacKenzie’s original design is evident with subtly sloping, cleverly guarded greens with narrow approaches - a hallmark of his work used to
reward the golfer for skilful and accurate play. At a little over 6200 yards do not be fooled into thinking you are in for an easy time here. Unusually for a course of this standard there are six Par 3 holes, one of which, the 7th, is the Course’s signature hole. This is a testing downhill hole with the babbling Harden Beck both to the left and rear of the small green ready to engulf the errant shot. Seven tough Par 4’s and 5 medium Par 5’s make up the rest of the challenge with mature Birch and Oak trees lining the fairways, and several ditches and ponds to test the shot makers skill.

who hit upon the idea of renting one or two fields upon which they would construct a few rudimentary holes over which they could indulge their passion for golf. Signature Hole - 3rd, Par 3 - 198yds (SI 9) Peter Alliss once wrote that this is one of the strongest par 3’s in Yorkshire. Out of bounds to the left and trees to the right. A large tree protects the green to the left and bunkers left and right - all uphill! Many of the members consider getting down in 4 a reasonable score on this hole. Play for position off the tee then chip and run up the green for a possible three. A classic example of MacKenzie green.

13. How to Find
WAKEFIELD
Less than 5 minutes from the M1 motorway. From the M1, Exit 39 follow the A636 towards Wakefield. At the first roundabout go straight ahead: at the second roundabout turn right. Go across 2 mini-roundabouts near the large Asda Supermarket. At the traffic lights go straight ahead. In 100 yards turn right onto Woodthorpe Lane. The Club is at the top. (Take care as the entrance is on a blind bend.)
When you visit us at Wakefield Golf Club you will be struck by the warmth of your welcome, and the quality of both our course and our facilities. Our course is widely regarded as one of the best in the region. It is an easy-walking course, set in undulating parkland with views over Wakefield and the surrounding countryside. The course is over 100 years old and so is very well established with many mature trees and each hole provides challenges to golfers of all abilities. Although many fairways are treelined you are unlikely to lose your ball if you stray into the trees as the grass is kept short.
Greens have true putting surfaces and we are able to play on both them and our tees all year round. The two loops of nine holes each start and end by the clubhouse and numerous points on the course allow views over Wakefield and the surrounding countryside. Key holes: Whilst all our holes are interesting, our course is particularly noted for the quality of its shorter holes, where ditches and a pond provide extra challenges for golfers of all abilities. These holes include the 2nd, 7th and 16th – three very different but equally challenging par-3’s – and the two short, risk-and-reward par-4’s the 12th and 13th.

Our Jewel in the Crown is the Willow Valley Course which has been designed to capture the imagination of golfers, ensuring members are never bored and visitors cannot resist the temptation to return and enjoy the fresh challenges thrown up by the course. Designed to
challenge the skill of the most experienced golfer, the Willow Valley Course is truly a masterpiece. Built to U.S.G.A standards the course is guarded by water on 11 of its 18 holes making the design unique in this fine golfing region. Water, a rock face, and a tree guard the green on the 6th hole making it difficult to get near to the pin to make par, while the island green on the 14th hole has the golfer deciding whether to lay up or go for it in regulation. Along side the water numerous bunkers and strategically placed trees make this a most interesting and picturesque course. Visitors are advised to allow between 4 to 5 hours to play the course.

The large, undulating U.S.G.A greens have been designed to allow players to run the ball onto them rather than having to fly the ball through the air. This allows the more imaginative golfers to play a wide variety of approach shots to the flag. There is much less emphasis on the golfer’s ability to get the ball airborne for long distances and is therefore less punishing for the beginner.
There are lakes and bunkers, though they are placed to catch the very wayward shot, leaving a much greater margin for error in comparison to our Willow Valley Course. Signature Holes Willow Valley Course - Hole 14 - Hitting the fairway makes the approach to this island green easier! The green is below the level of the fairway, but this hole usually plays into wind Pine Valley Course - Hole 6 - A “risk and reward” par 4 with a green which can be driven from the tee, though water lurks to catch the ball which doesn’t carry the full distance.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
East Yorkshire & Humberside Introduction
East Yorkshire & Humberside “East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea.” East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. To the west are the Yorkshire Wolds, a chalk formation, and you can explore the rolling hills along the 79 mile long
Yorkshire Wolds Way. To the south-east is the flat coastal plain of Holderness which terminates at the wild Spurn Peninsular East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea. Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a narrow projection of sand and shingle, constantly changing with the tides and a stop over for thousands of migrating birds. Bridlington, with its beautiful beaches and brand new award winning promenades and gardens, offers a host of all weather activities. This famous seaside resort has an irresistible appeal for people of all ages and a special Bridlington welcome that is guaranteed to warm your heart.

It’s very popular with beginners and casual golfers alike whilst our practice area offers everything that a new or established golfer would need for honing skills and preparing for the challenge of the main course. The 3rd is a really good thinking Par 5 hole: The trick is to play towards the pond to set up for either an aggressive long iron or wood over the water or a more conservative short iron onto the plateau.

“A testing par 68 for the scratch player without being too difficult for the higher handicap.” To which can be added, “An attractive course, with good golfing qualities, which makes it a pleasure to play again and again.” Brough is a thinking man’s course, where accurate positioning of the
tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers. Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

This beautiful golf course boasts many great attributes which make playing it an unforgettable experience. With USGA greens and tees along with fully drained fairways you can be sure that the playing surfaces are of the highest quality at all times of the year, and the friendly Clubhouse staff make sure that your post-round experience is just as good. Recent developments at the club include the new luxury Changing & Locker rooms, and the ambitions are to extend the Clubhouse further with a brand new function suite for large golfing parties, weddings and conferences. It’s all happening at Burstwick!
On the course, the 6 water hazards and 73 bunkers make for a fantastic challenge for golfers of all ability, with the layout designed to reward accuracy on every shot. Risk and reward is on the menu as numerous opportunities present themselves on many of the fantastic holes, but with that small risk of dropping a shot into the bunker, or losing a ball in the water. Signature Hole: 4th, Par 4. An elevated tee hitting down into a fairway guarded with 2 large fairway bunkers. Avoid these bunkers and you are left with a shot around 150-170 yards into a severely undulating green.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
South Yorkshire Introduction
South Yorkshire You could be forgiven for thinking that all South Yorkshire can offer is an industrial history of mining and steel manufacturing. The main towns within this Yorkshire and Humber county did grow around those industries, themselves having huge educational and historical appeal for visitors but, thanks to multi-million pound investment via government initiatives and Heritage Lottery funding, the whole area is buzzing with regeneration and redevelopment, seeing some of its slightly dusty, historical gems being given a good polish and the chance to shine again.
In addition to firm favourites (Doncaster Railway, Doncaster Racecourse), and those restored to their former glories (Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park Museum, Wentworth Castle), the area is brimming with new, lively, modern venues offering a variety of entertainment, culture and attractions for more cosmopolitan tourists including: art galleries & exhibitions (Millennium Galleries, Graves Art Gallery), contemporary/traditional music & theatre (Sheffield City Hall, The Leadmill, The Harley), sporting fixtures (Don Valley
Stadium, Hallam FM Arena, The Crucible), and state of the art shopping centres (Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks) - all of which mean this area is now a firm favourite for those visiting ‘up North’. If you enjoy the outdoors, South Yorkshire is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Pennine Yorkshire and the Trans Pennine Trail which cuts right across the region. So there is never a shortage of things to see and do in this abundant area of Yorkshire.

The Golf Club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent Club House. Surrounded by beautiful timbered parkland the course is easily accessible from the M1 or A1 in South Yorkshire. Also, being closely situated to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, it is accessible from far afield.
Originally a nine hole course laid out by Sandy Herd, in 1906 it was increased to eighteen holes and was subsequently modified by James Braid. Resulting from this is an exceptionally well laid out course, where golf is played over parkland of great beauty. The course record of 62 was recorded by Simon Coumbe of Pontefract GC during the second round of the inaugural Lee Westwood Trophy held in September 2005. He broke the previous record score of 65, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Ian Garbutt. The golf shop at Rotherham Golf Club prides itself on retail experience and exceptional customer service.

Tankersley Park Golf Club’s fine parkland course was designed by legendary golf course architect Martin Hawtree, the mastermind behind some of the most famous courses in the world. It opened for business in 1907 and has hardly looked back. Today, it enjoys an active membership who eagerly and amiably welcomes visitors who come to play their challenging course, found just outside Sheffield in High Green An eighteen-hole course, it stretches over 6244 yards of fabulous Yorkshire countryside for which it offers a par and standard scratch score of 70. If you are to challenge that score though,
there are plenty of hazards and testing holes you must overcome along the way. Enjoy! The course, is meticulously maintained and a fair but tough test for the club golfer. Tankersley Park Golf Club has met England Golf’s requirements and is accredited with the GolfMark Award. The club has also been recognised by Sport England as a Clubmark facility. Signature Hole: 18th - Mark Roe described this hole as the best finishing hole in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
North East Introduction
North East North East England is one of the nine official regions of England. Covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside. Northumberland is the Northernmost of the English counties, separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River and borders on the North Sea. The terrain is level along the wild, rugged coastline and hilly in the interior, where high moor lands alternate with fertile valleys. Hadrian’s Wall is probably the most notable feature; built in Roman times.
in County Durham. At the heart of this county lies Durham City; small enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site. Much of the West of the County, including Teesdale, Weardale and the Derwent Valley, is included in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is perfect country for walking, cycling, riding, wildlife-watching and exploring the many charming villages and towns.
The area suffered severely during the border wars between England and Scotland. The legacy of the Border wars of the 14th-16th centuries have resulted in Northumberland having more castles to explore than any other English county.
Tyne & Wear is an area with bustling towns and cities; encompassing Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. The diversity of the area and rich warmth of the people make for a fusion of attractions and appeal.
From the North Pennines in the West to the North Sea Coast in the East, there are attractions and delights to suit all tastes
Newcastle can boast three large shopping centres, many fascinating museums as well as cinemas, theatres presenting a vast
range of entertainment, sport and leisure centres, art-centres and a rich variety of clubs, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops catering for all tastes, pubs and bars all selling the local brew Newcastle Brown Ale and everything else you could could wish for. Teeside is an area now more familiarly known as the Tees Valley; stretching the salmon rich reaches of the upper Tees to the coastal beauty and character laden sea ports. The maritime history and industrial heritage are very much in evidence throughout this area. Teesside offers the opportunity for a country ramble over an endless expanse of moorland, the thrill of sandy beaches and towering cliffs as well as the pleasure of a successful days shopping and fine dining at a chic urban restaurant. From quaint fishing ports, beautiful countryside and cosmopolitan city life, this area has it all.

ALNMOUTH
01. How to Find
Alnmouth Golf Club overlooks the splendours of both Foxton and Alnmouth Bay on the Northumberland coastline in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. It is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the North East of England. Although the course has a coastal location it has parkland turf and a reputation for the fine quality of the greens and superb presentation. Recently chosen as one of the TOP 100 HIDDEN GEM golf courses in the UK by Golf Monthly magazine. We are a private members club with active Mens and Ladies sections, friendly clubhouse atmosphere and very strong junior section.
Foxton Hall is a collection of rambling buildings but the clubhouse occupies the main building which oozes with character and the traditions of the game of golf. A special feature of “Foxton”, as we are generally known, is a 26-bed Dormy House within the clubhouse offering hotel accommodation, English Tourism 3 Star rating, to groups of visiting golfers in very comfortable twin or single rooms with en suite facilities. Visitors are always given a warm Northumbrian welcome at Alnmouth where we have buggies for hire and first class practice facilities.
From Newcastle (South) or Edinburgh (North) on the A1: Leave the A1 at signpost ‘Alnmouth/Shilbottle’ either just before Alnwick from north or just past from south. Travelling east through Shilbottle follow signs to Alnmouth. At roundabout in Hipsburn go straight to Alnmouth in front of you. At the war memorial roundabout turn left signposted ‘Foxton’ and follow road up the hill. At the end of a row of large houses the club is signposted on the right. Turn down Foxton Drive. The club is at the bottom of the road. Visitors car park is on left before the clubhouse. Dormy House guests may use the members car park past the clubhouse. Bamburgh Castle is one of the most beautiful and entertaining courses in Britain. It is short but tricky, fun but thought-provoking. It starts with two par 3s followed by two par 5s; there are six par 3s in all; the last three holes are a great finish to any round: a birdie is possible for any golfer at all three, but danger is never far away.
Signature Holes Hole 8: The Island. Par 3, 164 yards The short par three 8th hole is a real eye opener. Stunning panoramic views await you on this lofty tee from where you play across a grassy chasm to a small raised green, perched on top of a rocky ledge.
No matter what the weather may throw at you, no matter how well or poorly you may be playing, you will be inspired by your surroundings which include many of Northumberland’s finest landmarks... Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, Budle Bay, the Cheviots and the iconic Bamburgh Castle.
Hole 4: Cheviot Way. Par 5, 485 yards On a clear day there is no finer sight than that of the Cheviots in the distance. To make birdie you must hit a long, accurate second to a narrowing landing area in front of a tricky green. Trouble is never far away in the form of steep drops down to the waters of beautiful Budle Bay.

BISHOP AUCKLAND
03. How to Find
Situated in the Land of the Prince Bishops, with views of the picturesque Wear Valley, it is easy to see why Bishop Auckland Golf Club is considered one of the treasures in County Durham. Founded in 1894 on land owned by the Church Commission, the parkland course has retained much of its original character whilst being modified to keep up with the demands of modern golf. The course has some of the best fairways you could wish to play from, with the rough, tough enough to punish a wayward shot without losing your ball. The greens are fine and true, together with the 7th hole, which has figured
in many a magazine and in the best holes in the North of England. It is a beautiful parkland course sporting many challenging holes and the finest fairways in the County. Whether you have a single figure handicap or are just taking up the game you will enjoy a round here. The clubhouse was rebuilt in the 1990’s and enjoys spectacular views across the Wear Valley. It is well worth taking time to enjoy a coffee prior to playing, or a beer once you have finished. With the guarantee of a warm welcome and the superb dining facilities, with food to suit most palates, we are sure you will have an enjoyable and memorable visit.
From the South: Travel north on the A1 / A1 (M). Leave at junction 58 (A68) and follow signs for Bishop Auckland. At first roundabout take the right fork on A6072, by-passing Shildon, crossing four roundabouts until you come to a roundabout at Romanway Industrial Estate (large pub on left just before roundabout). Turn right. At next roundabout take right turn onto Bishop Auckland by-pass (A688) towards Spennymoor/Durham. Go straight over next two roundabouts. 50 yards after this second, new roundabout take left turn (houses on left) and go to the top of the road. Turn left onto Durham Road. Entrance to the Golf Club is about 500 yards on the right. Play Blyth and you’ll realise that there are some things in life that are still great value for money. Pound for pound the 6,400 yard 18 hole course on the outskirts of the seaport town in Northumberland has got to be the best days sport you’ll find for your hard earned cash. Developed on land where once stood a Pit Head and its entire mining community, Blyth has matured and developed into a tree lined parkland course with a par of 72- but don’t be fooled by its gently undulating character. Its first six holes are a test for any golfer and negotiate them without dropping too many shots and you can be set up for a good score.
But beware - there are some cunning water hazards on 9, 12, 13, and 14 that demand a strong nerve and a sure stroke. They don’t call the 13th “Sinkers” for nothing! Superb greens - many say the best in the county - will make your round one of the most pleasurable you’ll play in many a day. Following your round at Blyth Golf Club, please visit our friendly clubhouse where you will be looked after by our Steward, David Curry, ex European Tour Professional, Walker Cup Player and British Amateur Champion.

Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James was part of the design team that developed the course in 1994, which has been constantly improved over the years. Since 2001 the course has been under the ownership of Irish businessmen, John Fallon and William Kiely. Their long term commitment to the course has been evidenced by the ongoing ten year improvement plan.
It has panoramic views of Simonside hills to the West and the coast to the East. The course in beautiful rolling countryside provides a challenging round for all abilities, playing off the championship tees measuring 7065 yards, the medal tees at 6804 yards and the leisure tees at 6403 yards. The maturing parklands with water hazards, is both beautiful and tranquil and includes some of the finest greens in the region. Our signature hole is the par 4, 18th. At 463 yds off the white tees an accurate drive is essential to avoid the ditch which runs down and across the fairway. The second is a downhill shot to a two tier green well guarded by bunkers.

“As fine an inland course as you can find.” The words of Harry Vardon, designer of the original course, are as true today as they were in 1907 when he wrote them to the committee. The Spital course has a magnificent setting on the south bank of the Tyne, and makes full use of the rolling contours and thousands of mature trees to provide a course that is challenging enough to be a regular host of County and Regional events, both amateur and professional, and yet at 6,300 yards it is also enjoyable for the handicap golfer. The greens are regularly amongst the best in the County, and the views over the surrounding
Northumberland countryside are stunning. With its perfect setting, spectacular Georgian Grade One listed Clubhouse, and mouthwatering menus, Hexham Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the best venues in the region for corporate and society golf with many visitors returning year after year to enjoy the excellent facilities and warm welcome. Signature Hole: 18th, Par 4, 344 yards This magnificent closing hole requires a tough decision. Do you risk trying to drive the green or play safe? An accurate tee shot is needed, avoiding the out of bounds, with a large, heavily bunkered green as your final challenge.

Longhirst golf, known for having a beautiful relaxed setting, has an alluring layout with nice country views and undulating greens that add character to the golf courses. Scenic lakes, elevated tees and well placed bunkers provide interesting features that contribute to its excitement. Course conditions are known for being some of the best in Northumberland. Longhirst Hall Golf Course was opened in June 1997. This layout now plays as The Old Course, with full spec winter greens if required. It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive
downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. The Dawson Course is a more relaxing round of golf but can still give a bite if you’re not on your game. Wider fairways and large greens are more forgiving. Lakes and water feature in abundance again.

NEWBIGGIN
Newbiggin Golf Club is situated 2 miles from the main A189 road (Spine road) and is laid out along the Northumberland coastline forming a fine Links/Moorland course. For visitors traveling from the South, head North from the Tyne Tunnel to the North Seaton Roundabout, a distance of about 12 miles, and turn right (Eastwards) towards Newbiggin village, Travel through the village until you arrive at the end of the road. The Golf Club is located adjacent to the Church Point caravan park.
Newbiggin Golf Club is laid out over moorland at the north side of the village and follows the coast line towards Lynemouth. It is a links/ moorland course with many challenging holes which require a good drive from the tee to set up par opportunities. The greens are without doubt some of the best available in the whole of the northern counties. We do not use winter greens and can boast that even in the depths of Winter, when nearby courses are closed due to inclement weather, Newbiggin is almost always open to provide exciting golf, good food and excellent company afterwards. We pride ourselves on the
friendliness of both our Staff and members. They will certainly make you feel at home during your visit. Come and visit us and I’m sure your experience will be memorable. The 6th hole is one of our most challenging holes especially from the new back tees. It requires a true long drive to carry the gully (and miss the huge bunker) to give yourself a short iron to the hidden and very undulating green. Other players play left of the gully for safety but leave themselves a longer and more difficult approach shot to the green. When the wind is against this is one of the trickiest holes on the course.

Northumberland Golf Club
“We doubt you will find a more enjoyable example of a heath land course in the North of England.”
The Northumberland Golf Club is a members’ club situated in the pleasant surroundings of Gosforth Park, Newcastle upon Tyne close to the A1. Take the opportunity to play one of the courses selected to be a Regional Qualifier for the Open Championship from 2013. It comprises a 6,683 yard challenge designed by Harry Colt and James Braid. All 18 holes are of a level, heathland nature with the firm, fast greens a particular feature, all strategically protected by bunkers. It has a much deserved reputation as a course of exceptional quality and is regarded as one of the finest in the North of England. Gosforth
Park and its Nature Reserve surround the course. Deer are spotted regularly and other wildlife adds to its attraction. The Northumberland Golf Club is proud to have hosted many major events, both professional and amateur. These include the Dunlop Masters, the English Amateur championship, the British Youths Championship, The Commonwealth Ladies Tournament and most recently (in 2004) the English Boys Open Strokeplay Championship. The club has ambitious plans to return the course to its original Colt Design with its natural heathland grasses, and visiting golfers are warmly welcomed here throughout the year.
Course History At the beginning of 1898, the originators of the Club designed the course. The first major alteration to the course was in 1899, and this was dictated by the position of the clubhouse. The next major alteration was in 1905, when the new clubhouse was reerected at the west of Gosforth Park. At about this time H S Colt advised on the reconstruction of the course and much of this work was in progress when the 1914-18 War broke out. When the war was over James Braid visited the course and gave advice regarding certain alterations which were carried out immediately.

The Clubhouse The Northumberland Golf Club was formed in 1898 when members left a club on the Town Moor and leased land from High Gosforth Park to build a new course. A small clubhouse was built near the start of the straight mile. The present clubhouse was built in 1913, of a traditional style, in a magnificent
position nestling into the surrounding woods and with a view out over the course and High Gosforth Park. The Main Lounge is a spacious and impressive oak panelled room. Its large bay window has magnificent views down the 1st and 18th fairways and onto the 18th green. The Dining Room seats 70 and has views down the 18th fairway. It’s furniture was made by the famous ‘Mouseman’ of Kilburn, Yorkshire. The Card Room adjacent to the Main Lounge is suitable for informal card playing and as a formal meeting room. It is available for hire by members. The Mixed Lounge has views over the 1st tee and 18th fairway and green. It is used by Ladies on a Tuesday and mainly as a bar for large visiting parties. The Sun Lounge has views over the 18th fairway and green. It is used by large visiting parties and is available for hire by members as a meeting room.

A golfer’s traditional approach to choosing a course to visit and booking a game of golf is changing at a rapid pace due to the increased use of websites, targeted promotions and booking facilities online. Bringing a fresh, new approach to Golf club marketing and promotion During Autumn 2014, The Golf Guide will be re-launching its digital media presence and products to complement and enhance the established magazine, to provide a solution to a burning question in the golf course advertising Sector: How can golf courses adapt and keep pace with the ever changing world of digital media to promote their products?
Golf Guide Digital Media will be launching an interactive, content rich mobile enabled website that proactively advertises the golf club as a whole, in a way not currently present in this market sector. This new site will provide a fresh approach to dynamically advertising golf clubs, their facilities special offers and complimentary sponsors. From a golfer’s perspective, we will provide an environment that will allow them to search for courses, hotels, local amenities and book everything directly through one site. More and more golfers are moving away from classical golf course memberships and are looking to play high quality courses at the right price. To ensure golf courses continue to attract golfers to their courses; marketing concepts and approaches are changing. Leveraging our position as a leading Golf publication, we not only publish 10’00 printed copies of the magazine in the region, we are now digitally publishing the magazine to over 11’000 readers in the North East alone on a quarterly basis.
