FEATURED COURSE
Ganton Golf Club
Ganton has been long renowned for the championships that it holds which include the Ryder, Walker and Curtis Cups, in addition to the Amateur Championship and numerous other national and international events. In 2013, in conjunction with Yorkshire’s other two Ryder Cup courses Moortown and Lindrick, the Yorkshire Challenge was created from the arrangement that the clubs already had for golfing tourists. It consisted of one round on each course starting at Ganton, before heading to Moortown and finishing at Lindrick. The aim was always to create a high quality event in keeping with the standard of the courses. Lexus came on board right from the start and continue to sponsor the event. Other key sponsors are Ping, Glenbrae, ProQuip, Titleist & Skycaddie. National Club Golfer have become the media sponsors for the 2015 event. Prizes are provided for the top five on all three days as well as the top three for the overall result.
The event was sold out before the marketing could start and when the tournament was played there was a long waiting list for any reserve places. Playing the last day in reverse order, just like a tour event, generated a lot of interest and although players had travelled a long way they stayed to cheer the inaugural winners home. In 2014, to cope with the demand for places, the Lexus Yorkshire Challenge was extended to have a series of three separate competitions; each series starting at one of the venues and rotating round all three of the courses. This created three series winners plus an overall champion. Over 400 players took part in the competition and it wasn’t until the last putt dropped at Moortown that we knew who the overall winners were. The 2015 event is already full with players coming from all over the country, but players can register for the waiting list & pre-registration for 2016 by going to www. yorkshirechallenge.co.uk.

New course design at Lindrick
Lindrick golf club, host of a previous Ryder Cup victory has just announced the first phase of series of enhancements to the course. The South Yorkshire club who are being advised by Ken Moodie and Creative Golf will be adding three new tees, eight additional bunkers together with three strategically positioned fairway mounds, which will involve changes to seven holes overall. Moodie who has a vast experience of enhancing traditional courses said: “The course improvements will add some extra playing
interest and challenge for the better golfer and are designed to enhance the fine natural characteristics of Lindrick.” Club Professional John King added: “The first phase will concentrate mainly on making the tee shots a little more challenging and improving the overall visual impact and importantly for championships, the length of the course. Around the greens things will remain the same, anyone who has played Lindrick regularly will be well aware that this is one aspect of the course which can defend itself more than adequately.”
Lindrick So close to a unique treble Lindrick GC went agonisingly close to a unique treble at the South African Open. Matt Fitzpatrick started the final round alongside leader Charles Schwartzel knowing that victory would not only give him his first Professional title but complete a treble for Lindrick, the Ryder Cup course where he is a member. The two previous tour events had been won by Danny Willett in Sun City and Lee Westwood in the Thailand Golf Championship and both golfers are also members at the South Yorkshire club where another tour player Mark Foster has also
joined following his relocation to the area. Fitzpatrick managed to cut Schwartzel’s lead to three shots at one stage before fading to tie for fifth. Lindrick Club Professional John King commented “It’s unusual for one club to have so many of the eliite English professionals as club members and we will be following and supporting their progress very closely throughout the year, starting with The Masters where Danny Willett will be making his debut alongside Lee, it would be fantastic if they could do the 1-2!”
The works will commence in February 2015. This is another stage of Lindrick’s exciting forward looking enhancement programme. Last year a second pedestrian tunnel was opened to ensure that golfers no longer encounter any road crossing with a total expenditure of over £1m. A new driving range and short game area has also been introduced together with a state of the art irrigation system, while work on the new changing rooms will be completed in January.

The Golf Guide Ladies Division
Golf continues to change and develop in terms of attracting new people to the game and building a sustainable future. Whilst dealing with over 400 clubs across our network, we have seen a number of different approaches to growing the ladies game at all levels. To ensure we continue to offer a proactive service to all our clients and consumers, we have launched the Golf Guide Ladies Division, led by Charlotte Wild. The purpose of our new ladies division is to promote clubs who are actively encouraging ladies to join the game, highlighting the best offers around and delivering a number of high value events, that aim to promote and develop ladies golf across the UK. Charlotte discusses her plans in more detail: “Having played as a pro on the LET Access Tour for the last two years, I have travelled to many different countries and golf clubs, often playing in Pro-ams as part of my tournament preparation. One surprising observation is there doesn’t tend to be many women playing in the events. If I am drawn to play with a team of ladies I am almost surprised!
I started to think about the opportunity ladies get to play outside of their home club or club matches. Working with The Golf Guide on their Golf Guide Tour made me think about setting up a version just for Women. An opportunity to play a selection of events around the UK, meeting fellow golfers, playing on great courses and most importantly having fun! During the next few months, we will be launching a series products aimed at pro-actively promoting all that is good about ladies golf. Later in 2015, I will deliver a series of pairs events for all standards of golfer. The fundamental concept of the days is to hold competitive events in the right spirit, held at great golf courses with a chance to meet new friends. At every event, I will be delivering a golf clinic on the course, setting different challenges and providing hints and tips. There will be fabulous prizes at each venue for the winners at each event. My aim is to make golf more accessible to

women of all standards in a fun and competitive environment, at an affordable price, whilst offering my knowledge and experience in order to help you learn a little from the day! Harmison and Porteous on board at Longhirst The development at Longhirst Hall golf club in Northumberland has taken another major step forward with the opening of their 14 bay covered driving range range and academy. The joint venture between Longhirst and ex England cricket star Steve Harmsion, hopes develop future pro golfers onto the scene, as well as, offering the best possible environment in which to practice. Open to members and the general public, the comments on the opening day were hugely positive. Longhirst has also announced the arrival of Garrick Porteous as their touring pro. Winner of the British amateur championship, who
went on to play in the Masters and the British open. Garrick will do all his pre tournament preparation at Longhirst, as well as, helping to nurture the future talent. Graham Chambers, director of golf, said “ to have Steve create this superb facility, one of the best in the North, is a huge benefit to us and the area. To couple that with Garrick joining us makes for hugely exciting times here at Longhirst, and I’m looking forward to this progressive move.” The facility is open to members and the general public. Whickham develops its Hollinside Park Course
Whickham are progressing with their course development plans. The Nordmann course no longer exists. The two holes that were in Snipes Dene have been returned to Mother Nature due to our inability to maintain them to the same high standards as the rest of the course. Winter or Wet conditions frequently closed these holes. A decision was taken to develop and re-configure the course layout (to replace them). The original Crombie course will be expanded from a men’s par 68 into a men’s par 71 and Par 72 to a Par 74 for the Ladies. This will happen in two phases. Phase one will re-design our 16th hole from a par 4 to a Par 5. We will begin the 2015 season with course as a par 69. The course will be rebranded and named Hollinside Park. Phase 2 will introduce two new holes for the season commencing 2016. The changes will also provide a par 5, third hole blended from our
original third tee and extending into the original fourth quarry hole. This is followed by a new par 4, fourth hole. The fifth is a new par 3 with outstanding views from Bird Hill. The design of the new 4th hole and the redesign of the Par 3, 5th hole modify the existing undulations of the land on which it is being built. This helps to reduce the amount or earth that has to be moved and helps to fit the course into the landscape more naturally. The new green that has been constructed is following the USGA recommended construction model for sand based greens and incorporates a herringbone drainage system, drainage raft layer and an exact depth of root zone that meets required specifications for this type of construction. The construction is similar to the existing greens and will therefore allow management of the new holes to continue seamlessly within the existing layout.
The extensions and alterations to the existing par 3, fifth hole will accommodate the change of direction in play. The modifications will be carried out in the same way to ensure that the new green surface performs exactly as the existing ones. The new mounds, either side of the new green along with inclusion of a tree line and mounding at the back of the green will help to frame the green and provide a fair test of accuracy from the new tees. The project is being masterminded by Andrew Mair’s Golf Design & Management Company. The brief is to create a layout that reflects the character of the original course. To produce a testing but fair examination that rewards accuracy over power. The summary of both phases provides a more balanced course and par 71 for men and a par 74 for ladies. We think the final layout will be enjoyed by members and prove even more attractive to visitors.

Moortown to stage historic Leeds Cup
Last year’s winner Ben Mason
Moortown Golf Club hosted the first Ryder Cup on British soil in 1929 and since then most of the country’s top amateur competitions. Now another famous tournament will be added to its illustrious history - the Leeds Cup. Professional golf’s oldest trophy, inaugurated in 1902, bears some of the biggest names of the game in the early part of the last century including several Open champions. And Moortown, regarded as one of Britain’s finest inland courses designed by legendary architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, will also have the honour of staging the 100th version of the event, which had been suspended during the war years, on July 29-30.
The cup was presented to the PGA on its formation in 1901 by the Lord Mayor of Leeds to be competed for annually by professional golfers. Open champion Harry Vardon was the first to have his name inscribed on it at Cobble Hall. Appropriately, most recent winners are Yorkshiremen - former European Tour players Nick Ludwell, from Selby, in 2013 and Waterfront Golf’s Ben Mason last year. PGA North secretary Graham Maly said: “This is truly a unique tournament and this year’s is extra special as we mark reaching the 100th milestone.
“We are hoping to negotiate funding from individuals and companies for both title and support sponsorship for this very special occasion which will be preceded by a pro-am which presents another opportunity to become involved. “It’s wonderful to establish a lasting legacy in the development of professional golf while marketing and promoting their brand to our members and the broader golfing community in association with the PGA.” Maly can be contacted on 01204 496137 or at graham.maly@pga.org.uk or on 01204 496137.
Ripon City Greater value from membership It is always appreciated in any walk of life when you actually get more value for your money than planned. Well that is now the case at Eaglescliffe and Ripon City golf clubs. Officials from both clubs have agreed a new, ground breaking reciprocal golf agreement between the 2 clubs, allowing members to play on both courses throughout the year with no increase in subscriptions. Mike Pearson, Marketing Chairman at Ripon, commented: “As golfers we are all hoping to receive good value for money when we pay our yearly subscription. I think
that this arrangement enhances that value tremendously, and is a great deal for members at both clubs who can now enjoy added golfing opportunities”. It certainly is a good time to be a member at Ripon, as this comes hot on the heels of a similar agreement with Richmond GC. Mike continued: “Ripon members now have the opportunity to play 3 fine courses this year. We have already seen a number of visiting members from those clubs enjoying our course and facilities, and hopefully these agreements can be the start of new inter club friendships”.

The Dukes Course St Andrews The Duke’s Golf Club is a heathland masterpiece in the Home of Golf set in a spectacular location above St Andrews with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and sea. Created in the mid 1990s by five times Open Champion, Peter Thomson, the Duke’s opened with Royal patronage when His Royal Highness, the Duke of York, played the inaugural tee shot. The course achieved Championship status within a year. A decade later, the Duke’s was acquired by its current owner and became part of the five redstar Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa. The hotel, right alongside the Old Course in St Andrews, offers 144 rooms including 35 suites and five unique dining experiences – from the 3 AA rosette-awarded Road Hole Restaurant to the world’s most famous 19th hole, the Jigger Inn. It also boasts an award-winning Spa complete with rooftop hot tub. The Duke’s new owners, Kohler Co., instigated substantial works to improve the course’s drainage. It was a complete transformation, overseen by American golf course architect, Tim Liddy, a protégé of Pete Dye. The course reopened in 2006.

North Yorkshire Introduction
North Yorkshire North Yorkshire is England’s largest county with an area of more than 800,000 hectares to explore. The county is fascinating, and no matter what your interest or time to spare, offers a huge range of activities and attractions. The county of North Yorkshire stretches across Northern England from its spectacular coastline in the East, across Moors and fertile valleys to the Dales in the West, and attracts millions of tourists who flock to see its traditional market towns, beautiful countryside and historic sites. The county’s greatest asset is its wonderful scenery, whether
it is the NorthYork Moors, to be enjoyed on foot, by car or steam railway or the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales. Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people’s living rooms across the world by the success of television series such as the stories of James Herriot and the Heartbeat adventures. Along the 45 miles of coastline there are the traditional resorts of Scarborough and Filey and Whitby. The ruins of monasteries scatter the county at places such as Rievaulx, Jervaulx and Fountains Abbey - a World Heritage site.
The Harrogate District is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, flourishing towns, villages and heritage sites. Harrogate has a rich spa history, combined with parks, gardens and floral displays. Close by is the medieval market town of Knaresborough, famous for its 14th Century ruined castle and Mother Shiptons Cave. There are also spectacular memories of bygone days in North Yorkshire with magnificent structures which have stood for centuries. Selby Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are two of the finest examples of English architecture to be found anywhere in the world. North Yorkshire is indeed a land of diversity.

This Championship links course, is situated by the shores of the North Sea and measures 6750 yards from the white tees with a par 72. The Ladies play from red tees all the year round and their course measures 5545 yards with a par 73. The course itself is flat and easy to walk. It is protected by strategically placed bunkers both on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, and in common with many Championship links courses, it is a true test of golf when the wind blows. The club have hosted many County and Professional events and is the home to the
Amateur scratch competitions the Cleveland Salver and the Mid Amateur International. Signature Hole Hole 11, ‘Ridges’, Par 4, 429 yards (White Tee) Par 4 with a ridge to negotiate from the tee shot, fairly straight hole with a well guarded green. A water hazard is on the right side of the rough however it has to be a very wayward shot to catch it. Professionals Tip: Keep to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this will open the green up, for your second shot the middle of the green is always a good option, get to greedy and you may pay the consequences.

Regarded as one of the finest tests of inland golf, the course is frequently graded in the Top 100 and is built on predominantly sandy heathland, which drains exceptionally well and provides an excellent surface for all year round golf. The greens, which were voted ‘’best on the European Tour’’, remain consistent throughout the year, and the course drains well during the winter.
The course is flat and tree lined, with heather and well placed bunkers providing the hazards. The course is a good challenge for all golfers. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4. ‘Langer’ The line from the tee is down the left hand side of the fairway, possibly using a long iron to avoid running into the small trees. This allows an easy pitch over Germany Beck into the welcoming green. The approach from the right is blocked by a large oak requiring a high shot if you are to make the green. Watch out for the ash tree by the left side of the green made famous by Bernhard Langers ‘tree’ shot in 1981

Nestling in the Vale of Pickering, east of York and a few miles from the coastal resort of Scarborough, a day at Ganton is a day to remember. Golf was first played at Ganton in the summer of 1891 on a course laid out by Tom Chisholm of St Andrews who had assistance from Robert Bird, the Club’s first professional and head greenkeeper. The site chosen then formed part of Sir Charles Legard’s Ganton Estate and was very rough ground, covered with whins and many varieties of grasses and wild flowers. Thousands of years previously this area had been submerged as part of an inlet from the North Sea, and the natural sandy subsoil was an ideal place to develop a golf course. Distance from Scarborough was eleven miles by road, but development was more influenced by the North Eastern Railway Line with Ganton Halt being ¼ mile from the Clubhouse. The proximity of a railway was often a factor in the development of golf courses in the 19th Century, particularly so in Ganton’s case as the membership extended to those living in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Ganton was soon established as a course where history was to be made. In 1896 Harry Vardon came as professional and it was during his stay (to 1903) that he won the first three of his six Open Championships, and it was to Ganton that he brought back the U.S. Championship Trophy in 1900. Ganton has hosted a succession of major amateur and professional tournaments for men and women. In 1964 the Amateur Championship was played with Michael Lunt just failing to defend from the previous year, losing to Gordon Clark in the final at the 39th. In staging the Amateur Championship again in 1977 (Peter McEvoy, the 1999 and 2001 Walker Cup Captain, was the winner) and 1991 (the winner was Gary Wolstenholme) Ganton remains the only inland course to have held the competition. Indeed Gary Player once said of Ganton that it is the only inland course worthy of holding the Open Championship. Ganton is proud to have been so closely linked with the story of British golf. Deep and prolific bunkers, savage rough and impenetrable gorse have made for a searching examination of the game’s best players.

Whatever the time of year, you will be impressed with the spectacular scenery and the peace and quiet which will surround you during the whole of your round. The view over the moors from the 13th tee is unsurpassed in the whole of the North of England. Looking away from the moors, the course offers distant views of the Yorkshire Wolds and The Hambleton Hill – both areas of outstanding natural beauty. If you want
Signature Holes Like all courses, Kirkbymoorside has its signature holes. Whatever your handicap the ‘right to left’ drive from the 7th tee will provide a true test to those seeking par and the 10th is not named the ‘widow maker’ for nothing. It’s a tough drive on the par four 13th, but the view from the tee out to the moors past the village of Gillamoor, makes even the poorest tee shot (almost) forgettable.

The fairway is guarded by a huge old oak tree before a tight approach to a well guarded green; the views from this green take in the Vale of York and York Minster itself , quite often playing into the prevailing wind – a hole whereby a par on here really is a fantastic score.

Established in 1914 and designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Oakdale’s unique mix of moor and parkland has earned it a reputation to rival even the very best venues in Northern England. Moreover, few facilities offer such a close tie with accommodation in the adjacent town centre, providing the
ideal stay and play situation.

At just under 6,500 yards, the course offers a true test to golfers of varying abilities, generous fairways and beautiful scenery abounds. Set in 130 acres of naturally undulating terrain, you can expect to come across a diverse range of wildlife, with foxes and roe deer a common sight. With no two holes the same, it’s a well know fact that scoring at Oakdale depends on how well you negotiate the par 3s with both the 9th and 12th protected by water.

Although Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club dates back to 1909, the present course was designed by James Braid and established in 1928. The course starts on the cliff top and then moves inland threading its way between trees and spinneys, with lovely views of the North Yorkshire Moors before returning to the cliff top for the final three holes. The course is sufficiently undulating to be interesting without being excessively hilly and is a tough but fair test for golfers of all abilities. With the prevailing wind from the west the first five holes provide a stiff test of golf and par on these holes is a good start.
The short 7th and the par 5s at 8 and 9 provide some respite before the next major test “Amen corner” (10, 11 and 12) is tackled. Hole 10 requires a long straight drive and the 11th is a memorable hole played from an elevated tee over water to a green surrounded by trees. The 12th is a testing dogleg played around trees to the right to a raised green. The 13th and 14th are birdie chances as the course winds its way back to the 15th tee where once again the sea comes into view. The homeward run has glorious sea views across the North Bay towards the Castle before arriving back at the Clubhouse where a welcome drink awaits.

12. How to Find
SCARTHINGWELL
Within easy driving distance of both Leeds and York, we are situated just outside of the village of Towton on the A162 which runs between Tadcaster and Sherburn-in-Elmet. For those traveling from further afield, Scarthingwell is located within 10 minutes drive of the A1M and M1 motorways.
An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. Each of the partners plays an active role in the day-to-day operation of the Golf Course and at least one partner is usually on-site at most times of the day.
The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Signature Holes You can enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside on this course but remember to pay as much attention to the 9th and 10th holes. The 9th is a tricky par-3 with an approach to a severely guarded green, whilst the 10th includes a dog leg and an approach over water.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
West Yorkshire Introduction
West Yorkshire West Yorkshire has a great deal to offer visitors to the county with its heritage attractions, grand stately homes, green open spaces, canals, towns and cities. Composed of the districts of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, a network of paths and cycle-ways both in towns and the countryside allow for easy access to the many sites of interest. Leeds – once the hub of the North based on its manufacturing and textile industries, is now a leading vibrant legal, finance and retail centre by day and lively cosmopolitan city by night. Award winning restaurants, wine bars, music venues, theatres and art galleries offer
a vast array of entertainment to satisfy any appetite. Vanguard architectural sites such as Bridgewater Place, 1 City Square and the Waterfront properties sit comfortably with the historic structures of the Corn Exchange and Leeds Kirkgate Market. An exciting retail experience is on offer with the likes of Harvey Nichols nestling next to the renowned Victoria Quarter, boasting an abundance of boutiques as well as well-known high street names. Leeds is also the sporting home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the most decorated Club in County Cricket History, and of course the celebrated Leeds United Football Club.
Proud of its long and important history, Bradford is home to a number of important historical buildings and sites; including one of only two World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire, and the most visited museum outside of London. The city has a lively multicultural vibe with a variety of diversions including the esteemed Bradford Alhambra Theatre. From a golfing perspective, West Yorkshire is home to some of the best inland courses in Britain. Included in this list are Alwoodley, Moortown and Moor Allerton who all sit proudly in the list of the top 100 courses in England.

Laid out in 1899, our Par 71 Championship Course can justly claim to be one of the oldest in Yorkshire and provides a real challenge for golfers of all handicaps. Set out in 6,300 yards, it is a moorland links which commands stunning views over Baildon and Rombald Moors. Two special features, Greenhouse Hill and Birkin Hill, have irregular contours and accommodate the testing Par 4 10th and Par 3 14th, both of which require accurate shots to well protected greens. The course runs in two loops with the 10th hole and 18th hole each finishing outside the
Clubhouse. Many holes are played along welldefined, tree-lined fairways to spacious, but fast and testing greens with subtle borrows. Always in immaculate condition, the course has recently undergone an impressive £1 million improvement programme to ensure that it remains pristine and playable throughout the seasons in all but the most adverse weather conditions. The course continues to be used for many prestigious Yorkshire Championships and is the home of The Hawksworth Trophy, a 36hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers in Northern England.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.
It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
After playing why not visit our Clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality. It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.

On entry & exit please call the office to open the security barrier. Facilities
The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.
The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

Unusually for a course of this standard there are six Par 3 holes, one of which, the 7th, is the Course’s signature hole. This is a testing downhill hole with the babbling Harden Beck both to the left and rear of the small green ready to engulf the errant shot. Seven tough Par 4’s and 5 medium Par 5’s make up the rest of the challenge with mature Birch and Oak trees lining the fairways, and several ditches and ponds to test the shot makers skill.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
East Yorkshire & Humberside Introduction
East Yorkshire & Humberside “East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea.” East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. To the west are the Yorkshire Wolds, a chalk formation, and you can explore the rolling hills along the 79 mile long
Yorkshire Wolds Way. To the south-east is the flat coastal plain of Holderness which terminates at the wild Spurn Peninsular East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea. Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a narrow projection of sand and shingle, constantly changing with the tides and a stop over for thousands of migrating birds. Bridlington, with its beautiful beaches and brand new award winning promenades and gardens, offers a host of all weather activities. This famous seaside resort has an irresistible appeal for people of all ages and a special Bridlington welcome that is guaranteed to warm your heart.

Set in 210 acres overlooking Bridlington Bay, ‘The Links’ has something for everyone! Bridlington Links Golf & Leisure Estate is a top quality golfing venue, perched on this magical part of England’s heritage coast that still manages to exceed expectations. Links Course Bridlington Links Golf & Leisure Estate boasts a fine 6751 yard golf course with a distinctive “links feel” and breathtaking views of Bridlington Bay and the town. The par 72 course offers spectacular holes along the cliff tops and Danes Dyke and is a challenge to all levels of golfer.
Par 29 Short Course Our picturesque 9 hole short course is ideal if you’d like to try golf for the very first time, improve your game or fine tune your skills. It’s very popular with beginners and casual golfers alike whilst our practice area offers everything that a new or established golfer would need for honing skills and preparing for the challenge of the main course. The 3rd is a really good thinking Par 5 hole: The trick is to play towards the pond to set up for either an aggressive long iron or wood over the water or a more conservative short iron onto the plateau.

“A testing par 68 for the scratch player without being too difficult for the higher handicap.” To which can be added, “An attractive course, with good golfing qualities, which makes it a pleasure to play again and again.” Brough is a thinking man’s course, where accurate positioning of the
tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers. Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

Founded in 1931, ‘The Friendliest Club on the Coast....’. Flamborough Head Golf Club is an 18 hole cliff top links course that has been carefully moulded around the contours of the famous headland which gives the Club its name. The Course & Clubhouse are surrounded by magnificent and panoramic views of the North Sea including both lighthouses, one of which can be found on the course next to the 5th tee. The golf course provides both a good test of your golfing skills and an enjoyable experience for Members and Visitors of all abilities throughout the year. If you’ve tried the rest, our challenge is for you to try one of the
3rd Green
best. You won’t be disappointed! We’re not known as ‘The Friendliest Club on the Coast...’ for nothing; you’ll be warmly welcomed. Signature Hole: Signal House (See photo below): Hole 10, Par 3, 148 yards (White Tee) From the elevated tee you have a panoramic view of this two tier Par 3 green which is surrounded on three sides by deep bunkers and horrendous rough on the fourth side above the green. The challenge is to find the putting surface, sometimes in very windy conditions, and avoid the hazards. The real challenge comes when the pin placement is on the top tier of the green!
From Hull: Leave Hull on the A165 towards Bridlington. After about 27 miles take the fourth exit from the roundabout on the A165, with the Moor Lane. Take the first exit left and after one mile turn right onto the A614/Bridlington. At the next traffic lights go straight ahead which takes you back onto the A165. At the next roundabout take the 2 exit, bear left and almost immediately take the first exit on the next mini roundabout towards Flamborough. After six miles turn right on to the B1259 towards Flamborough Head. The Golf Club is sign posted at this junction and is about a mile down the road on your left hand side. A classic James Braid test laid out in 1921, Hull Golf Club provides a tough start and finish. You will enjoy spectacular views over the City of Hull, Humber Estuary and the magnificent Humber Bridge. The par 70 layout measures less than 6300 yards from the back tees tees, despite recent innovations in club and ball technology. The course record of 64 has not been beaten but was equalled in 2014 by club member John Samuel. The tight tree-lined fairways punish any wayward shot and the classic Braid bunkering makes club selection difficult for approach shots. Even after a solid drive and precision approach, a
par is not guaranteed as the fast, subtle greens present a challenge to even the best of putters. Visit our 2000sq ft golf boutique featuring luxurious men’s and ladies fashion brands such as Hugo Boss, J Lindeberg and Wolsey. We also have the new ‘Golf Den’ the ultimate golfers indoor hideaway featuring the world’s best courses on our simulator, SAM Putt lab and Flightscope Ball tracking device, Titleist and callaway Custom Fit Centre. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
South Yorkshire Introduction
South Yorkshire You could be forgiven for thinking that all South Yorkshire can offer is an industrial history of mining and steel manufacturing. The main towns within this Yorkshire and Humber county did grow around those industries, themselves having huge educational and historical appeal for visitors but, thanks to multi-million pound investment via government initiatives and Heritage Lottery funding, the whole area is buzzing with regeneration and redevelopment, seeing some of its slightly dusty, historical gems being given a good polish and the chance to shine again.
In addition to firm favourites (Doncaster Railway, Doncaster Racecourse), and those restored to their former glories (Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park Museum, Wentworth Castle), the area is brimming with new, lively, modern venues offering a variety of entertainment, culture and attractions for more cosmopolitan tourists including: art galleries & exhibitions (Millennium Galleries, Graves Art Gallery), contemporary/traditional music & theatre (Sheffield City Hall, The Leadmill, The Harley), sporting fixtures (Don Valley
Stadium, Hallam FM Arena, The Crucible), and state of the art shopping centres (Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks) - all of which mean this area is now a firm favourite for those visiting ‘up North’. If you enjoy the outdoors, South Yorkshire is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Pennine Yorkshire and the Trans Pennine Trail which cuts right across the region. So there is never a shortage of things to see and do in this abundant area of Yorkshire.

After 1 mile at traffic signals turn right onto Church Lane (signposted Ravenfield). At miniroundabout turn left onto Main Street B6093 (signposted Ravenfield). Continue through Ravenfield on the B6093. Then after almost 3 miles at T-junction turn left onto the A630 (signposted Rotherham). Golf Club is 1 mile on right hand side just after entering Thrybergh. For over 100 years, Rotherham Golf Club has been the setting for outstanding beauty and a true test of golf. This parkland course features an imposing gothic clubhouse built in 1813 and is also the perfect setting for Weddings and Corporate events. The Golf Club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent Club House. Surrounded by beautiful timbered parkland the course is easily accessible from the M1 or A1 in South Yorkshire. Also, being closely situated to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, it is accessible from far afield.
Originally a nine hole course laid out by Sandy Herd, in 1906 it was increased to eighteen holes and was subsequently modified by James Braid. Resulting from this is an exceptionally well laid out course, where golf is played over parkland of great beauty. The course record of 62 was recorded by Simon Coumbe of Pontefract GC during the second round of the inaugural Lee Westwood Trophy held in September 2005. He broke the previous record score of 65, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Ian Garbutt. The golf shop at Rotherham Golf Club prides itself on retail experience and exceptional customer service.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
North East Introduction
North East
North East England is one of the nine official regions of England. Covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside. Northumberland is the Northernmost of the English counties, separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River and borders on the North Sea. The terrain is level along the wild, rugged coastline and hilly in the interior, where high moor lands alternate with fertile valleys. Hadrian’s Wall is probably the most notable feature; built in Roman times.
in County Durham. At the heart of this county lies Durham City; small enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site. Much of the West of the County, including Teesdale, Weardale and the Derwent Valley, is included in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is perfect country for walking, cycling, riding, wildlife-watching and exploring the many charming villages and towns.
The area suffered severely during the border wars between England and Scotland. The legacy of the Border wars of the 14th-16th centuries have resulted in Northumberland having more castles to explore than any other English county.
Tyne & Wear is an area with bustling towns and cities; encompassing Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. The diversity of the area and rich warmth of the people make for a fusion of attractions and appeal.
From the North Pennines in the West to the North Sea Coast in the East, there are attractions and delights to suit all tastes
Newcastle can boast three large shopping centres, many fascinating museums as well as cinemas, theatres presenting a vast
range of entertainment, sport and leisure centres, art-centres and a rich variety of clubs, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops catering for all tastes, pubs and bars all selling the local brew Newcastle Brown Ale and everything else you could could wish for. Teeside is an area now more familiarly known as the Tees Valley; stretching the salmon rich reaches of the upper Tees to the coastal beauty and character laden sea ports. The maritime history and industrial heritage are very much in evidence throughout this area. Teesside offers the opportunity for a country ramble over an endless expanse of moorland, the thrill of sandy beaches and towering cliffs as well as the pleasure of a successful days shopping and fine dining at a chic urban restaurant. From quaint fishing ports, beautiful countryside and cosmopolitan city life, this area has it all.

ALNMOUTH
01. How to Find
Alnmouth Golf Club overlooks the splendours of both Foxton and Alnmouth Bay on the Northumberland coastline in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. It is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the North East of England. Although the course has a coastal location it has parkland turf and a reputation for the fine quality of the greens and superb presentation. Recently chosen as one of the TOP 100 HIDDEN GEM golf courses in the UK by Golf Monthly magazine. We are a private members club with active Mens and Ladies sections, friendly clubhouse atmosphere and very strong junior section.
Foxton Hall is a collection of rambling buildings but the clubhouse occupies the main building which oozes with character and the traditions of the game of golf. A special feature of “Foxton”, as we are generally known, is a 26-bed Dormy House within the clubhouse offering hotel accommodation, English Tourism 3 Star rating, to groups of visiting golfers in very comfortable twin or single rooms with en suite facilities. Visitors are always given a warm Northumbrian welcome at Alnmouth where we have buggies for hire and first class practice facilities.
From Newcastle (South) or Edinburgh (North) on the A1: Leave the A1 at signpost ‘Alnmouth/Shilbottle’ either just before Alnwick from north or just past from south. Travelling east through Shilbottle follow signs to Alnmouth. At roundabout in Hipsburn go straight to Alnmouth in front of you. At the war memorial roundabout turn left signposted ‘Foxton’ and follow road up the hill. At the end of a row of large houses the club is signposted on the right. Turn down Foxton Drive. The club is at the bottom of the road. Visitors car park is on left before the clubhouse. Dormy House guests may use the members car park past the clubhouse. BISHOP AUCKLAND
02. How to Find
Situated in the Land of the Prince Bishops, with views of the picturesque Wear Valley, it is easy to see why Bishop Auckland Golf Club is considered one of the treasures in County Durham. Founded in 1894 on land owned by the Church Commission, the parkland course has retained much of its original character whilst being modified to keep up with the demands of modern golf. The course has some of the best fairways you could wish to play from, with the rough, tough enough to punish a wayward shot without losing your ball. The greens are fine and true, together with the 7th hole, which has figured
in many a magazine and in the best holes in the North of England. It is a beautiful parkland course sporting many challenging holes and the finest fairways in the County. Whether you have a single figure handicap or are just taking up the game you will enjoy a round here. The clubhouse was rebuilt in the 1990’s and enjoys spectacular views across the Wear Valley. It is well worth taking time to enjoy a coffee prior to playing, or a beer once you have finished. With the guarantee of a warm welcome and the superb dining facilities, with food to suit most palates, we are sure you will have an enjoyable and memorable visit.

BLYTH
Get onto the A189 (Northumberland Spine Rd) at the intersection with the A19. Turn off at the Junction signposted for Blyth Beach with a brown tourist sign. Follow the brown signs for the beach until you see the brown signs for the golf course.
Play Blyth and you’ll realise that there are some things in life that are still great value for money. Pound for pound the 6,400 yard 18 hole course on the outskirts of the seaport town in Northumberland has got to be the best days sport you’ll find for your hard earned cash. Developed on land where once stood a Pit Head and its entire mining community, Blyth has matured and developed into a tree lined parkland course with a par of 72- but don’t be fooled by its gently undulating character. Its first six holes are a test for any golfer and negotiate them without dropping too many shots and you can be set up for a good score.
But beware - there are some cunning water hazards on 9, 12, 13, and 14 that demand a strong nerve and a sure stroke. They don’t call the 13th “Sinkers” for nothing! Superb greens - many say the best in the county - will make your round one of the most pleasurable you’ll play in many a day. Following your round at Blyth Golf Club, please visit our friendly clubhouse where you will be looked after by our Steward, David Curry, ex European Tour Professional, Walker Cup Player and British Amateur Champion.

BURGHAM PARK
6 miles north of Morpeth just off A1 on ‘C’ road linking A1 and Longhorsley Village
Host of the PGA North Region Championship 2006 to 2008. Burgham Park is a championship parkland course located in the lovely Northumberland countryside, 20 minutes from Newcastle and just a few miles north of Morpeth, just off the A1. Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James was part of the design team that developed the course in 1994, which has been constantly improved over the years. Since 2001 the course has been under the ownership of Irish businessmen, John Fallon and William Kiely. Their long term commitment to the course has been evidenced by the ongoing ten year improvement plan.
It has panoramic views of Simonside hills to the West and the coast to the East. The course in beautiful rolling countryside provides a challenging round for all abilities, playing off the championship tees measuring 7065 yards, the medal tees at 6804 yards and the leisure tees at 6403 yards. The maturing parklands with water hazards, is both beautiful and tranquil and includes some of the finest greens in the region. Our signature hole is the par 4, 18th. At 463 yds off the white tees an accurate drive is essential to avoid the ditch which runs down and across the fairway. The second is a downhill shot to a two tier green well guarded by bunkers.

“As fine an inland course as you can find.” The words of Harry Vardon, designer of the original course, are as true today as they were in 1907 when he wrote them to the committee. The Spital course has a magnificent setting on the south bank of the Tyne, and makes full use of the rolling contours and thousands of mature trees to provide a course that is challenging enough to be a regular host of County and Regional events, both amateur and professional, and yet at 6,300 yards it is also enjoyable for the handicap golfer. The greens are regularly amongst the best in the County, and the views over the surrounding
Northumberland countryside are stunning. With its perfect setting, spectacular Georgian Grade One listed Clubhouse, and mouthwatering menus, Hexham Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the best venues in the region for corporate and society golf with many visitors returning year after year to enjoy the excellent facilities and warm welcome. Signature Hole: 18th, Par 4, 344 yards This magnificent closing hole requires a tough decision. Do you risk trying to drive the green or play safe? An accurate tee shot is needed, avoiding the out of bounds, with a large, heavily bunkered green as your final challenge.

It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. The Dawson Course is a more relaxing round of golf but can still give a bite if you’re not on your game. Wider fairways and large greens are more forgiving. Lakes and water feature in abundance again.

If heading north or south on the A1 take the A69 signposted Hexham and Carlisle. Exit the A69 at Heddon on the Wall and pick up the B6318, just before the Three Tuns public house, heading west towards Chollerford. Continue on the B6318 for seven miles, the turning to Matfen is on the right.
Set in 300 acres of mature parkland with established burns and woodland, Matfen Hall’s 27 hole course is a rated as one of the finest in the region. The course is an enjoyable test for players of all abilities and incorporates challenging features from the dry stone ‘ha-ha’ to the fast flowing river Pont. Although the course is easily walked, buggies are available for hire during the main season. Visitors to the area are welcome to hire clubs and a trolley. Boasting a covered driving range and putting green, members and guests are
invited to brush-up on their technique before a game or simply enjoy these facilities throughout the year. Matfen’s high quality nine hole par three course is ideal for the less experienced player. Signature Holes The picturesque and fast flowing River Pont comes into play at several holes including the 14th, one of many strong par fours. The dog-legged 16th is the pick of the par fives, but Matfen’s signature hole is surely the long par three 17th with its narrow green sited teasingly just over the river.

NEWBIGGIN
Newbiggin Golf Club is situated 2 miles from the main A189 road (Spine road) and is laid out along the Northumberland coastline forming a fine Links/Moorland course. For visitors traveling from the South, head North from the Tyne Tunnel to the North Seaton Roundabout, a distance of about 12 miles, and turn right (Eastwards) towards Newbiggin village, Travel through the village until you arrive at the end of the road. The Golf Club is located adjacent to the Church Point caravan park.
Newbiggin Golf Club is laid out over moorland at the north side of the village and follows the coast line towards Lynemouth. It is a links/ moorland course with many challenging holes which require a good drive from the tee to set up par opportunities. The greens are without doubt some of the best available in the whole of the northern counties. We do not use winter greens and can boast that even in the depths of Winter, when nearby courses are closed due to inclement weather, Newbiggin is almost always open to provide exciting golf, good food and excellent company afterwards. We pride ourselves on the
friendliness of both our Staff and members. They will certainly make you feel at home during your visit. Come and visit us and I’m sure your experience will be memorable. The 6th hole is one of our most challenging holes especially from the new back tees. It requires a true long drive to carry the gully (and miss the huge bunker) to give yourself a short iron to the hidden and very undulating green. Other players play left of the gully for safety but leave themselves a longer and more difficult approach shot to the green. When the wind is against this is one of the trickiest holes on the course.

Golf in full swing at England’s newest course £15m Redevelopment of popular Durham hotel and golf resort hits full swing in 2015
Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club, County Durham’s leading risk and reward golf resort, is currently enjoying a £15m makeover, including opening England’s newest championship golf course, a luxury health club and spa and 48 new hotel bedrooms. The Ramside Hall Estate sits in mature wooded parkland on the outskirts of Durham City close to the A1M heading North to Newcastle and beyond to Scotland. Family owned and run, the estate is home to a four star country hotel and the popular Ramside Golf Club which put itself on the golfing map in 2014 by opening the Cathedral Course - the only new championship golf course north of the Scottish border. Ramside’s two championship layouts are designed by Yorkshireman Jonathan Gaunt of Golf Design and both offer a thrilling blend of risk and reward golf with vast lakes, dramatic doglegs, sweeping fairways, expansive bunkering and some of the biggest and truest greens you’ll ever putt on. Next year is the club’s 20th anniversary. Ramside opened in 1996 with 27 holes, three loops of nine holes, giving an option of three eighteen hole combinations. The recent investment in golf and leisure facilities is already paying dividends in increased membership, growth in play and stay golf breaks
and the launch of exciting new initiatives including Flexi-Golf, a flexible points based membership and a new scholarship for Junior Golfers aged 12-16. The Cathedral Course opened for play last September and has already drawn golfers from across the UK keen to experience a new test of golf. Amen for the Cathedral Course The new course replaces the original 9-holes from which it takes its name and begins among the tall trees of the parkland estate. The holes then stretch out across a broad hilltop plateau with views over Durham City, and its world famous Cathedral and Castle, before dropping down into a picturesque wooded valley and returning back to the clubhouse, golf academy and 16-bay driving range. The middle ‘hilltop holes’ are spectacular with wide-open skies and 360 views of the Durham countryside. They are exposed to the elements and a prevailing South Easterly wind which gives the greens a links-like look and feel. They sit proudly, elevated as if part of the horizon, and are protected by the clever run-offs, swales and false fronts more often found in seaside golf. The ‘valley holes,’ from four through seven are peaceful and quiet, tranquil even. Here, two beautiful par-threes interchange with a pair of

muscular par-fives, defended by well-placed fairway and greenside bunkers. Later, the course returns to the valley for its most celebrated section. Inspired by Augusta Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner,’ and credits the famous Georgia golf course as his inspiration in shaping the holes. The downhill par-three 12th bears an uncanny resemblance to Augusta’s iconic ‘Golden Bell’ but instead of Rae’s Creek, Sherburn Beck stands guard at the front of the green. The beck is the defining feature at the par-four 13th and skirts the entire length of the hole just like Rae’s Creek does at the par-five 13th in Georgia. The Cathedral’s finishing stretch combines two gentle par-four holes with a fiendishly difficult 452-yard 17th hole. The route to the hole is punctuated by several lakes, fairway bunkers, encroaching trees and a difficult green. The 18th is a 236-yard par three with a trio of lakes to navigate before you reach the safety of a huge undulating green.

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol
Costa del Sol Spain
The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.
In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.
The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
