The Importance of
Golf Fitness
by Natalie Lowe
If I said to you; you could gain an extra 10-20 yards on your drives without having to change your swing would you take it? Now ask yourself are you one of those golfers who spends hours on the range trying to improve your swing without really making much progress? If you are then I guess you could put this down to a few things. Firstly you might not have a great golf coach (possible but unlikely), secondly you may not understand and be implementing the changes very well (possible and more likely) or thirdly your body simply will not allow you to make the changes you want to (possible and highly likely). If it’s the last option then don’t worry you are not alone! How do I know this? Because I was one of those golfers too! Having played the game since I was 14 and turning professional at 22 I more than anyone know how frustrating, soul destroying yet totally addictive golf is. As a now retired LET Access player (short but sweet it was) I turned my abilities in another direction and that direction was into the gym. My day job now is working as a personal trainer and golf specific conditioner. My client base varies from company directors to stay at home mums, professional athletes to weekend warriors. But how can I help you? Hopefully with some simple yet effective advice and tips that can help you knock shots off your handicap, gain you your first professional win or simply take the cash of your mates on the 18th. So what is golf fitness? Golf specific training is a phrase I hear a lot these days. You only have to look at the transformation of players like Rory McIlroy to know fitness is
becoming a big part of professional golf. Golf is an extremely physical sport (although a lot of people still don’t think so). The repetition of a good golf swing at speed puts the body under immense strain. I can guarantee if you are a regular golfer (or maybe a casual one) you have experienced some form of back, neck, shoulder or hip pain at some point. So are the endless hours of beating balls really doing your game and you’re body any good? Unless you have the stability, strength and flexibility to perform these moves with power and control the answer is probably no. Here is where I come in… As a big practiser I would spend hours on the range trying to make myself the next Annika. Yet what I didn’t know back then was that I was weaker than a chocolate fire guard and had the flexibility levels of a house brick! So it was hardly any great surprise to me nowadays that I didn’t make the kind of progress I should of. If only I knew then what I know now! If you just like I was are struggling to progress in the way you desire then it is likely your body simply doesn’t have the capacity to deal with the physical moves you are trying to implement. So what do you do about it? Firstly get yourself a good PT or golf conditioner. A good trainer will give you an initial screening to see what your body can and can’t do and relate this to your golf swing. It’s hugely important to have a physical screening not only to find out what you need to work on but also highlight any underlying injuries that might be holding you back. A good screening should test flexibility, strength, stability and range of
movement all relating to the golf swing. An initial screening will not only supply you with the information you need but is also a great way of looking back and tracking your progress in months to come. Secondly you should have a programme designed specifically for you and your goals that is challenging yet manageable. This should ideally be no more than 1 hour’s gym work and change every 4-6 weeks to keep your body guessing and keep you out of your comfort zone. Lastly a good trainer will track progress with you. This should be in the form of measurements, pictures and videos. After all we want to know that all this hard work is doing us some good right? Any progress should then always relate back to your golf swing and how its helping you improve. I would also encourage that your trainer and your golf coach work side by side (two heads are always better than one!). Implementing tools such as trackman and 3D analysis systems wherever possible will get down to the fine details of your swing and tell you the numbers and facts as they are. You can also use these systems as another way to track your progress by measuring your swing speeds and distances on a regular basis. So to the modern day golfer and bearing all that in mind swap your pint for a protein shake, get yourself down the gym and build a swing that’s strong, consistent and most importantly a winning one! natalie.lowe@pro-fitpt.co.uk @StatNat 07890943991

Meltham Golf Club Success Stories
This year has proved to be a very successful year at Meltham Golf Club. The club, based just outside of Huddersfield, has seen its sections experience wins across its Junior and Scratch section as well as one of its members flying the clubs colours on the international scene. The Scratch Team really kicked off the year of success by gaining promotion from the 5th to 3rd division in the Yorkshire Country Championship. The three man team of Graham McLean, Tom Hunt and Johnny Fleetwood also provided the core of the league scratch team and continued their success there, with Meltham taking the Scratch Team First division title for the Huddersfield, Halifax District for
the first time in years. The three also put in fine individual performances with the Union Strokeplay Championship. Tom Hunt took the Junior Prize and finished 6th overall, Johnny Fleetwood finished 3rd overall and Graham McLean took home the title for the first time in his career, one of the few remaining prizes that had eluded him within the Union. Tom Hunt not only provided good performances for the scratch team but was also part of the Meltham Junior team who won the Union Junior League for the 3rd year in a row! Tom along with Junior Captain, Sean Campbell are also through to the final of the Junior Union Foursomes to be played later this month.
All this success is not limited to a local level either. Jamie Bower, the clubs England International, had a great showing recently at the English Amateur Championship, reaching the semi-finals and narrowly losing out on the second extra hole to Alfie Plant of Sundridge Park Golf Club. Riding the wave of this great performance Jamie went on to finish tied for 6th at the European Amateur Championship the following week. On the back of this success Jamie was chosen to represent England in the home internationals championship. Meltham Golf Club is continuing to go from strength to strength and is looking forward to the success carrying on for years to come.

Whickham Golf Club Awarded ÂŁ75,000 of funding to improve grassroots sports facility
NEWS & FEATURES
NEWS & FEATURES
Local sports club, Whickham Golf Club is among 149 projects to secure a share of £16.5 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England that will help improve facilities and playing fields across the country. Whickham Golf Club has been awarded £75,000 to to create a Golf Academy, comprising 4 bay driving range with an integral teaching suite. The facility will also include a short game practice area. The improved practice area will help local people get into golf. We are currently running a schools programme and the students will gain additional opportunities to develop their skills. Club President, Les Britton, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our practice facilities to match the quality of our

course. It is the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club with the capability to promote excellence in our sport. The ability to encourage more people to play a sport that endures through junior and senior years. It is indeed a tribute to the 2012 Olympics’ legacy.” The announcement comes as Sport England revealed that it has reached a major funding milestone – having invested £5 billion in grassroots sport in the last 20 years. Since 1994, the year Tom Daley was born, Wet Wet Wet topped the charts with Love Is All Around and the Channel Tunnel opened, Sport England has made tens of thousands of investments – totalling £5 billion. Sport England’s Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “£5 billion is a huge sum of
money, but it’s the projects and people that that money supports which are really important. We’re delighted to have invested so much into community sport, and see on a daily basis the impact that it makes for local people. “The latest round of facility funding continues to make a noticeable difference to community sports clubs across the country. By giving people top-class, sustainable facilities in which to play sport, and by improving and protecting our playing surfaces, we’re ensuring that more people can pay sport, more often.” The latest round of facility funding will help create new changing rooms, pavilions and artificial grass pitches as well as protecting and improving grass pitches to make people’s sporting experiences better.

Team Captain, Tim Reaney said “It’s been a great performance from the players throughout the year, we had a great start in May and just continued to improve. There was a lot of extra pressure going for three in a row but the guys all just got on with the job and made sure that there are no spaces in the Lindrick trophy cabinet”. Rotherham gained some compensation by beating Lindrick in their semi final before retaining the knock out trophy with a victory over Worksop in the final.

Alex Stevenson
South Moor Golf Club Harrison Hodgson and Barclay Brown
A potential national trend in the development of teenage golfers conceived in the Midlands and launched in the North East has got off to a flying start. The two-year-old North of England Under-14 Open is returning to County Durham club South Moor next year . . . and for ever more if a former president of England Golf, Roy Case, has his way. The tournament includes a separate section for Under-12s plus handicap competitions for the whole field. The boys and girls go round the course playing golf together and, although there are separate prizes and different pars, if a girl should ever sign for a 54-hole total better than that of the leading boy then she will be crowned the North of England champion. Case, who organises the tournament, is a former chairman of the international junior selectors. Between 1994 and 2007, he steered the England team to two world titles plus victories in four European championships and eight home internationals. He is now lead partner in Golf Concepts LP, a Nottinghamshire business who specialise in managing golf tournaments. So it was the voice of world wide experience speaking when Case said: “This tournament will be held at South Moor in perpetuity. It is theirs to put on for as long as they want it. “You could not possibly ask for any more than the way Guy Carr, one of their committee men, and his enormous band of willing and inordinately helpful volunteers have gone about making this tournament the success it has been in its first two years of existence.”
Sponsored by a council body, Stanley Area Action Partnership, the event was founded by Case who also created the England Boys Under-16 Open, the McGregor Trophy. That was 33 years ago and the list of McGregor winners who have gone on to greater things includes 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose and European Tour winners Edoardo Molinari and Graeme Storm. The McGregor was staged at South Moor in 2011 and following that tournament, the club expressed an interest in hosting a significant junior event on an annual basis. Case suggested the format for the Under-14 tournament. Case added: “The idea behind this relatively new event is to give boys and girls not playing a national level tournament at this age level the opportunity to gain experience of competitive regional golf. ”Word is spreading – this year we had entries from Hong Kong, South Africa and Spain. “Everything at South Moor has been to a first class standard throughout on and off the course. “That is down to the attention to detail on the part of the green keepers, the bar staff and everybody else involved at this warm, wonderful, welcoming and down to earth golf club.” In the absence of a play-off, the 2015 boys’ title was shared in mid August between Darlington’s Harrison Hodgson and Sheffield’s Barclay Brown, the defending champion and an England Boys cap. They tied on five-over totals of 221, respectable for players in their early teens taking on a course with Augusta style fast - and mainly vast - sloping greens.
Both shot par 72 in a last round which brought a 15-over 87 for the overnight leader, Southport & Ainsdale’s Matthew Jackman. From five shots clear of the field, Jackman dropped to eighth place. Hodgson, a pupil at Hurworth School, is a member of the Darlington and Rockliffe clubs and trains with England Golf’s north regional boys squad. His father Stewart is co-owner of the Billingham based Belasis IFA, trading as Fairstone Financial Management. A major supporter of golf, Fairstone sponsor the men’s home amateur internationals and the Golf Club Managers’ Association. They are also main sponsors of the Newcastle Falcons rugby union team and are among the Durham County Cricket Club sponsors. The leading Northumberland player was seventh placed Joe Robson, grandson of his caddy, former Newcastle, Sunderland, West Ham and Carlisle centre-forward Bryan “Pop” Robson, a six handicap golfer at the Hexham club. Beamish Park’s Alex Stevenson, returning to her former club, was in a class of her own in finishing 19 strokes clear of the field to win the girls’ trophy with one-under 72 followed by 80 and 81 for a 14-over total of 233 It is a good bet William Hill, the handicap winner, will no longer be playing off 15 at his club, Rufford Park in Nottinghamshire. He signed for nett scores of 69, 63 and 67. For tournament information, visit www.northofenglandu14golf.co.uk

Brancepeth Castle Golf Club The elite amateur golfers competing in the English Champion Club tournament at Brancepeth Castle on September 19-20 will be more interested in their scores than the scenic splendour of even this drop dead gorgeous Harry Colt course in County Durham. Yet the host club’s Richard Aisbitt, holder of the Logan Trophy as this season’s English Mid Amateur champion, while happy to offer advice about playing the course, hopes they also take the opportunity to appreciate their surroundings. Aisbitt is an authority on scoring low. Twice Northern Boys champion in the early 90s, he has won his county title three times, the club championships at Bishop Auckland and Brancepeth on 14 occasions, set or equalled four course records in the North East and has triumphed more than 20 times in 36-hole scratch opens. His most recent course record arrived early in July, a five-under 67 at the Northumberland club during the 54-hole Logan Trophy, in which
he finished six shots clear of the field to secure his first national title. Shortly after the Logan, Aisbitt, 41, took his wife Louise and their youngsters Nell and Charlie to Captain’s Day at Brancepeth, originally a deer park. Aisbitt said: “Our halfway house is between two par threes on the ninth and tenth and we were in the hospitality marquee alongside the tenth tee with the captain, Steve Rose, with the castle, which dates back to Norman times, as our backdrop. “It was a lovely summer’s day and Louise had never before seen the fantastic view down over the ninth and tenth holes. She commented it was so beautiful you could have been in Berkshire or Surrey.
“When you play the course as often as I do, you can get a bit blasé about it. What Louise said made me realise I had never stopped before to really soak it all up at that particular spot on the course. “It has got to be one of the best golfing views in the world. Captain’s Day made me really appreciate how lucky we are at Brancepeth to be able to play such a lovely course whenever we want.” This is an opinion shared by Jonathan Naylor, this year’s captain at Moortown, who chose Brancepeth for his away day this summer. Both clubs have tradition. Moortown were the first club to host the Ryder Cup on British soil, in 1929, and their course was designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the creator of Augusta National.

An admirer of Brancepeth... Moortown captain Jonathan Naylor
Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
Brancepeth rubs shoulders with Lytham, Wentworth and Moor Park among the Colt collection of the great man’s course designs. The name of Brancepeth’s most famous member, a former Daily Telegraph golf correspondent and noted bon viveur, is kept alive by the annual Leonard Crawley Medal, a 36-holer won by Aisbitt seven times. Given Naylor could have chosen somewhere nearer home from among Yorkshire’s 188 clubs for his Moortown away day - at 2.9 million acres it is the biggest county in the UK - the choice of Brancepeth was a meaningful compliment. Naylor said: “The course was stunning and the whole day was such a delight from start to finish, and the staff so obliging, the only problem I had was rounding up our members and persuading them we could not keep the coach driver waiting any longer to take us home. “There can be nowhere which offers better value than Brancepeth. For £110 each we got the beautiful course, all the food including some fantastic homemade pies, the halfway house, pre-dinner drinks and drinks with the meal. Around where I live – Roundhay in Leeds - you can pay that for a green fee!” If it is a gimme the Champion Club players won’t be going hungry in the club house at Brancepeth, how should they set about devouring the course? Said Aisbitt: “The first four of the five par threes are stand-out holes and when the overall scores are added up, that is where the Champion Club
tournament is most likely to be won or lost. “On the second you need to get your clubbing right because there is a shallow green front to back. Half a club out either way and you could be in trouble. “The fifth is a long par three where a lot of people don’t take enough club into the prevailing wind and the ninth is the only one of the five which is usually down wind. “The ninth is also the signature hole and my bogey hole. It was once described by an American golf magazine as the hardest ninth hole in the world. “The entrance to the green is very narrow and I hit the ball right to left but, given the lie of the land and the shape of the hole, it lends itself more to somebody who fades the ball. “The tenth calls for a good long solid accurate strike into a smallish target with bunkers both sides - anything else and you are going to miss the green - and the 15th is the most straightforward of the par threes, not really that hard a hole. “On the par fours and fives, you must hit the fairways as often as possible. If you don’t, it’s more difficult than normal at Brancepeth to find the greens and the course nearly always rewards accurate players rather than outrageous shot makers.” *ANY golfers who would like to take a virtual tour of the course should visit www.brancepeth-castle-golf.co.uk and click on “golf” then “video flyovers”.

The Dukes Course St Andrews The Duke’s Golf Club is a heathland masterpiece in the Home of Golf set in a spectacular location above St Andrews with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and sea. Created in the mid 1990s by five times Open Champion, Peter Thomson, the Duke’s opened with Royal patronage when His Royal Highness, the Duke of York, played the inaugural tee shot. The course achieved Championship status within a year. A decade later, the Duke’s was acquired by its current owner and became part of the five red-star Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa. The hotel, right alongside the Old Course in St Andrews, offers 144 rooms including 35 suites and five unique dining experiences - from the 3 AA rosette-awarded Road Hole Restaurant to the world’s most famous 19th hole, the Jigger Inn. It also boasts an award-winning Spa complete with rooftop hot tub. The Duke’s new owners, Kohler Co., instigated substantial works to improve the course’s drainage. It was a complete transformation, overseen by American golf course architect, Tim Liddy, a protégé of Pete Dye. The course reopened in 2006.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
North Yorkshire Introduction
North Yorkshire North Yorkshire is England’s largest county with an area of more than 800,000 hectares to explore. The county is fascinating, and no matter what your interest or time to spare, offers a huge range of activities and attractions. The county of North Yorkshire stretches across Northern England from its spectacular coastline in the East, across Moors and fertile valleys to the Dales in the West, and attracts millions of tourists who flock to see its traditional market towns, beautiful countryside and historic sites. The county’s greatest asset is its wonderful scenery, whether
it is the NorthYork Moors, to be enjoyed on foot, by car or steam railway or the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales. Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people’s living rooms across the world by the success of television series such as the stories of James Herriot and the Heartbeat adventures. Along the 45 miles of coastline there are the traditional resorts of Scarborough and Filey and Whitby. The ruins of monasteries scatter the county at places such as Rievaulx, Jervaulx and Fountains Abbey - a World Heritage site.
The Harrogate District is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, flourishing towns, villages and heritage sites. Harrogate has a rich spa history, combined with parks, gardens and floral displays. Close by is the medieval market town of Knaresborough, famous for its 14th Century ruined castle and Mother Shiptons Cave. There are also spectacular memories of bygone days in North Yorkshire with magnificent structures which have stood for centuries. Selby Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are two of the finest examples of English architecture to be found anywhere in the world. North Yorkshire is indeed a land of diversity.

This Championship links course, is situated by the shores of the North Sea and measures 6750 yards from the white tees with a par 72. The Ladies play from red tees all the year round and their course measures 5545 yards with a par 73. The course itself is flat and easy to walk. It is protected by strategically placed bunkers both on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, and in common with many Championship links courses, it is a true test of golf when the wind blows. The club have hosted many County and Professional events and is the home to the
Amateur scratch competitions the Cleveland Salver and the Mid Amateur International. Signature Hole Hole 11, ‘Ridges’, Par 4, 429 yards (White Tee) Par 4 with a ridge to negotiate from the tee shot, fairly straight hole with a well guarded green. A water hazard is on the right side of the rough however it has to be a very wayward shot to catch it. Professionals Tip: Keep to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this will open the green up, for your second shot the middle of the green is always a good option, get to greedy and you may pay the consequences.

Regarded as one of the finest tests of inland golf, the course is frequently graded in the Top 100 and is built on predominantly sandy heathland, which drains exceptionally well and provides an excellent surface for all year round golf. The greens, which were voted ‘’best on the European Tour’’, remain consistent throughout the year, and the course drains well during the winter.
The course is flat and tree lined, with heather and well placed bunkers providing the hazards. The course is a good challenge for all golfers. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4. ‘Langer’ The line from the tee is down the left hand side of the fairway, possibly using a long iron to avoid running into the small trees. This allows an easy pitch over Germany Beck into the welcoming green. The approach from the right is blocked by a large oak requiring a high shot if you are to make the green. Watch out for the ash tree by the left side of the green made famous by Bernhard Langers ‘tree’ shot in 1981

Nestling in the Vale of Pickering, east of York and a few miles from the coastal resort of Scarborough, a day at Ganton is a day to remember. Golf was first played at Ganton in the summer of 1891 on a course laid out by Tom Chisholm of St Andrews who had assistance from Robert Bird, the Club’s first professional and head greenkeeper. The site chosen then formed part of Sir Charles Legard’s Ganton Estate and was very rough ground, covered with whins and many varieties of grasses and wild flowers. Thousands of years previously this area had been submerged as part of an inlet from the North Sea, and the natural sandy subsoil was an ideal place to develop a golf course. Distance from Scarborough was eleven miles by road, but development was more influenced by the North Eastern Railway Line with Ganton Halt being ¼ mile from the Clubhouse. The proximity of a railway was often a factor in the development of golf courses in the 19th Century, particularly so in Ganton’s case as the membership extended to those living in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Ganton was soon established as a course where history was to be made. In 1896 Harry Vardon came as professional and it was during his stay (to 1903) that he won the first three of his six Open Championships, and it was to Ganton that he brought back the U.S. Championship Trophy in 1900. Ganton has hosted a succession of major amateur and professional tournaments for men and women. In 1964 the Amateur Championship was played with Michael Lunt just failing to defend from the previous year, losing to Gordon Clark in the final at the 39th. In staging the Amateur Championship again in 1977 (Peter McEvoy, the 1999 and 2001 Walker Cup Captain, was the winner) and 1991 (the winner was Gary Wolstenholme) Ganton remains the only inland course to have held the competition. Indeed Gary Player once said of Ganton that it is the only inland course worthy of holding the Open Championship. Ganton is proud to have been so closely linked with the story of British golf. Deep and prolific bunkers, savage rough and impenetrable gorse have made for a searching examination of the game’s best players.

to test your golf on a gem of a course in the peace and tranquillity of superb countryside then you can do no better than enjoy the hospitality offered at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club.
Whatever the time of year, you will be impressed with the spectacular scenery and the peace and quiet which will surround you during the whole of your round. The view over the moors from the 13th tee is unsurpassed in the whole of the North of England. Looking away from the moors, the course offers distant views of the Yorkshire Wolds and The Hambleton Hill – both areas of outstanding natural beauty. If you want
Signature Holes Like all courses, Kirkbymoorside has its signature holes. Whatever your handicap the ‘right to left’ drive from the 7th tee will provide a true test to those seeking par and the 10th is not named the ‘widow maker’ for nothing. It’s a tough drive on the par four 13th, but the view from the tee out to the moors past the village of Gillamoor, makes even the poorest tee shot (almost) forgettable.

Established in 1914 and designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Oakdale’s unique mix of moor and parkland has earned it a reputation to rival even the very best venues in Northern England. Moreover, few facilities offer such a close tie with accommodation in the adjacent town centre, providing the
ideal stay and play situation.
Facilities
At just under 6,500 yards, the course offers a true test to golfers of varying abilities, generous fairways and beautiful scenery abounds. Set in 130 acres of naturally undulating terrain, you can expect to come across a diverse range of wildlife, with foxes and roe deer a common sight. With no two holes the same, it’s a well know fact that scoring at Oakdale depends on how well you negotiate the par 3s with both the 9th and 12th protected by water.

Although Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club dates back to 1909, the present course was designed by James Braid and established in 1928. The course starts on the cliff top and then moves inland threading its way between trees and spinneys, with lovely views of the North Yorkshire Moors before returning to the cliff top for the final three holes. The course is sufficiently undulating to be interesting without being excessively hilly and is a tough but fair test for golfers of all abilities. With the prevailing wind from the west the first five holes provide a stiff test of golf and par on these holes is a good start.
The short 7th and the par 5s at 8 and 9 provide some respite before the next major test “Amen corner” (10, 11 and 12) is tackled. Hole 10 requires a long straight drive and the 11th is a memorable hole played from an elevated tee over water to a green surrounded by trees. The 12th is a testing dogleg played around trees to the right to a raised green. The 13th and 14th are birdie chances as the course winds its way back to the 15th tee where once again the sea comes into view. The homeward run has glorious sea views across the North Bay towards the Castle before arriving back at the Clubhouse where a welcome drink awaits.

SCARTHINGWELL
Within easy driving distance of both Leeds and York, we are situated just outside of the village of Towton on the A162 which runs between Tadcaster and Sherburn-in-Elmet. For those traveling from further afield, Scarthingwell is located within 10 minutes drive of the A1M and M1 motorways.
An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. Each of the partners plays an active role in the day-to-day operation of the Golf Course and at least one partner is usually on-site at most times of the day.
The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Signature Holes You can enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside on this course but remember to pay as much attention to the 9th and 10th holes. The 9th is a tricky par-3 with an approach to a severely guarded green, whilst the 10th includes a dog leg and an approach over water.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
West Yorkshire Introduction
West Yorkshire West Yorkshire has a great deal to offer visitors to the county with its heritage attractions, grand stately homes, green open spaces, canals, towns and cities. Composed of the districts of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, a network of paths and cycle-ways both in towns and the countryside allow for easy access to the many sites of interest. Leeds – once the hub of the North based on its manufacturing and textile industries, is now a leading vibrant legal, finance and retail centre by day and lively cosmopolitan city by night. Award winning restaurants, wine bars, music venues, theatres and art galleries offer
a vast array of entertainment to satisfy any appetite. Vanguard architectural sites such as Bridgewater Place, 1 City Square and the Waterfront properties sit comfortably with the historic structures of the Corn Exchange and Leeds Kirkgate Market. An exciting retail experience is on offer with the likes of Harvey Nichols nestling next to the renowned Victoria Quarter, boasting an abundance of boutiques as well as well-known high street names. Leeds is also the sporting home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the most decorated Club in County Cricket History, and of course the celebrated Leeds United Football Club.
Proud of its long and important history, Bradford is home to a number of important historical buildings and sites; including one of only two World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire, and the most visited museum outside of London. The city has a lively multicultural vibe with a variety of diversions including the esteemed Bradford Alhambra Theatre. From a golfing perspective, West Yorkshire is home to some of the best inland courses in Britain. Included in this list are Alwoodley, Moortown and Moor Allerton who all sit proudly in the list of the top 100 courses in England.

The “National Club Golfer” magazine describes the course as “With two distinct halves, the 5,600 yards layout is an intriguing mix of the old and the new, with a common theme of undulating parkland which is surprisingly mature for its age. A warm welcome and immaculate fairways and greens
are reasons why so many visiting parties choose Bracken Ghyll on a regular basis”. The course is complemented by outdoor and indoor practice areas, a well appointed bar with catering, a function room that can accommodate up to 120 guests, extensive car parking and a warm Yorkshire welcome. Signature Hole: The short 17th “Quarry Hole” is Bracken Ghyll’s signature hole. A par three 148 yards off the white tees demanding an accurate tee shot to a raised green flanked down the right by a stream that gathers many balls. It can be a card breaker at the end of your round.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.
The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.
It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
After playing why not visit our Clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality. It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.

Ilkley is one of the finest golf clubs in Yorkshire, both in terms of beauty and for an unforgettable round of golf. It boasts two former Ryder Cup captains as honorary life members, Colin Montgomerie, who learnt his golf at the club, and Mark James, who lives locally. The club is extremely popular with societies, corporates & casual visitors. Much of this is down to its picturesque setting next to the River Wharfe with Ilkley Moor as a backdrop. With a number of holes designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the course is a real test whatever your handicap. For the first seven holes the river is ever present, with the second, third
and fourth holes being played onto and off an island. Moving inland the tree-lined fairways ensure the need for accurate drives and approaches. With the greens close to the tees and no deep rough you can complete the round relatively quickly enabling you to comfortably enjoy a couple of rounds in a day. John Hammond has been at the club for over 36 years and is one of the friendliest and most knowledgeable professionals in the county. His well-stocked shop always provides a few bargains too. Caterer, Joe McDermott, can also provide a range of menus to cater for your party throughout the day.

The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.
The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

The Shipley Golf Club Beckfoot Lane Bingley, BD16 1LX
THE SHIPLEY GOLF CLUB
Telephone: 01274 568652 office@shipleygolfclub.co.uk www.shipleygolfclub.com How to Find Travelling from Bradford: Exit the M62 at the M606 junction. Follow the M606 until the end. Take the A650 towards Shipley, Keighley and Skipton. Go through Shipley and Saltaire still heading towards Bingley, Keighley and Skipton. Keep straight on following signs to Wilsden/Cottingley (B6265). At the traffic lights after the roundabout keep in the right hand lane following signs to Bingley. After about ¼ mile, pass Kiddicreche Nursery on the left. Just after this turn left on to Beckfoot Lane. The Golf Club entrance is 200 yards on the left. Set amidst a wonderful wooded valley on the outskirts of Bingley, the course is the creation of the renowned architect Dr Alister Mackenzie of Augusta fame. Stretching across the rolling valley floor of Beckfoot this traditional parkland, visually stunning course provides golfers of any standard with a test of their skill and accuracy. The Shipley Golf Club is proud of the standard of its facilities and whatever the time of year you can be sure to find firm fairways, true greens and an idyllic environment. Much of Dr MacKenzie’s original design is evident with subtly sloping, cleverly guarded greens with narrow approaches - a hallmark of his work used to
reward the golfer for skilful and accurate play. At a little over 6200 yards do not be fooled into thinking you are in for an easy time here. Unusually for a course of this standard there are six Par 3 holes, one of which, the 7th, is the Course’s signature hole. This is a testing downhill hole with the babbling Harden Beck both to the left and rear of the small green ready to engulf the errant shot. Seven tough Par 4’s and 5 medium Par 5’s make up the rest of the challenge with mature Birch and Oak trees lining the fairways, and several ditches and ponds to test the shot makers skill.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
East Yorkshire & Humberside Introduction
East Yorkshire & Humberside “East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea.” East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. To the west are the Yorkshire Wolds, a chalk formation, and you can explore the rolling hills along the 79 mile long
Yorkshire Wolds Way. To the south-east is the flat coastal plain of Holderness which terminates at the wild Spurn Peninsular East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea. Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a narrow projection of sand and shingle, constantly changing with the tides and a stop over for thousands of migrating birds. Bridlington, with its beautiful beaches and brand new award winning promenades and gardens, offers a host of all weather activities. This famous seaside resort has an irresistible appeal for people of all ages and a special Bridlington welcome that is guaranteed to warm your heart.

BROUGH
From the West via M62/A63: After Junction 38 the M62 becomes a dual carriageway, the A63, approximately 3 miles after this change exit left signed South Cave, Market Weighton and Beverley. At the T junction turn right following local signs for Brough. Carry on to a roundabout take the 3rd exit towards Brough and Elloughton continue to the next roundabout and take the 2nd exit into Cave Road, signed Brough Aircraft Factory. Brough Golf Club is a mile along this road on your left hand side.
A warm welcome awaits all visitors to Brough Golf Club, an attractive and challenging Inland Parkland Course located in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The mature nature of the course reflects its historical roots. The Club was founded in 1891 and celebrated its Centenary in 1993. “A testing par 68 for the scratch player without being too difficult for the higher handicap.” To which can be added, “An attractive course, with good golfing qualities, which makes it a pleasure to play again and again.” Brough is a thinking man’s course, where accurate positioning of the
tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers. Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

Straight over next roundabout and after approx 1.5 miles turn right into Riplingham Road. Club entrance is on the right just after the sharp right hand bend.
A classic James Braid test laid out in 1921, Hull Golf Club provides a tough start and finish. You will enjoy spectacular views over the City of Hull, Humber Estuary and the magnificent Humber Bridge. The par 70 layout measures less than 6300 yards from the back tees tees, despite recent innovations in club and ball technology. The course record of 64 has not been beaten but was equalled in 2014 by club member John Samuel. The tight tree-lined fairways punish any wayward shot and the classic Braid bunkering makes club selection difficult for approach shots. Even after a solid drive and precision approach, a
par is not guaranteed as the fast, subtle greens present a challenge to even the best of putters. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
South Yorkshire Introduction
South Yorkshire You could be forgiven for thinking that all South Yorkshire can offer is an industrial history of mining and steel manufacturing. The main towns within this Yorkshire and Humber county did grow around those industries, themselves having huge educational and historical appeal for visitors but, thanks to multi-million pound investment via government initiatives and Heritage Lottery funding, the whole area is buzzing with regeneration and redevelopment, seeing some of its slightly dusty, historical gems being given a good polish and the chance to shine again.
In addition to firm favourites (Doncaster Railway, Doncaster Racecourse), and those restored to their former glories (Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park Museum, Wentworth Castle), the area is brimming with new, lively, modern venues offering a variety of entertainment, culture and attractions for more cosmopolitan tourists including: art galleries & exhibitions (Millennium Galleries, Graves Art Gallery), contemporary/traditional music & theatre (Sheffield City Hall, The Leadmill, The Harley), sporting fixtures (Don Valley
Stadium, Hallam FM Arena, The Crucible), and state of the art shopping centres (Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks) - all of which mean this area is now a firm favourite for those visiting ‘up North’. If you enjoy the outdoors, South Yorkshire is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Pennine Yorkshire and the Trans Pennine Trail which cuts right across the region. So there is never a shortage of things to see and do in this abundant area of Yorkshire.

This parkland course features an imposing gothic clubhouse built in 1813 and is also the perfect setting for Weddings and Corporate events. The Golf Club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent Club House. Surrounded by beautiful timbered parkland the course is easily accessible from the M1 or A1 in South Yorkshire. Also, being closely situated to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, it is accessible from far afield.
Originally a nine hole course laid out by Sandy Herd, in 1906 it was increased to eighteen holes and was subsequently modified by James Braid. Resulting from this is an exceptionally well laid out course, where golf is played over parkland of great beauty. The course record of 62 was recorded by Simon Coumbe of Pontefract GC during the second round of the inaugural Lee Westwood Trophy held in September 2005. He broke the previous record score of 65, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Ian Garbutt. The golf shop at Rotherham Golf Club prides itself on retail experience and exceptional customer service.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
North East Introduction
North East
North East England is one of the nine official regions of England. Covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside. Northumberland is the Northernmost of the English counties, separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River and borders on the North Sea. The terrain is level along the wild, rugged coastline and hilly in the interior, where high moor lands alternate with fertile valleys. Hadrian’s Wall is probably the most notable feature; built in Roman times.
in County Durham. At the heart of this county lies Durham City; small enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site. Much of the West of the County, including Teesdale, Weardale and the Derwent Valley, is included in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is perfect country for walking, cycling, riding, wildlife-watching and exploring the many charming villages and towns.
The area suffered severely during the border wars between England and Scotland. The legacy of the Border wars of the 14th-16th centuries have resulted in Northumberland having more castles to explore than any other English county.
Tyne & Wear is an area with bustling towns and cities; encompassing Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. The diversity of the area and rich warmth of the people make for a fusion of attractions and appeal.
From the North Pennines in the West to the North Sea Coast in the East, there are attractions and delights to suit all tastes
Newcastle can boast three large shopping centres, many fascinating museums as well as cinemas, theatres presenting a vast
range of entertainment, sport and leisure centres, art-centres and a rich variety of clubs, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops catering for all tastes, pubs and bars all selling the local brew Newcastle Brown Ale and everything else you could could wish for. Teeside is an area now more familiarly known as the Tees Valley; stretching the salmon rich reaches of the upper Tees to the coastal beauty and character laden sea ports. The maritime history and industrial heritage are very much in evidence throughout this area. Teesside offers the opportunity for a country ramble over an endless expanse of moorland, the thrill of sandy beaches and towering cliffs as well as the pleasure of a successful days shopping and fine dining at a chic urban restaurant. From quaint fishing ports, beautiful countryside and cosmopolitan city life, this area has it all.

ALNMOUTH
How to Find
Alnmouth Golf Club overlooks the splendours of both Foxton and Alnmouth Bay on the Northumberland coastline in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. It is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the North East of England. Although the course has a coastal location it has parkland turf and a reputation for the fine quality of the greens and superb presentation. Recently chosen as one of the TOP 100 HIDDEN GEM golf courses in the UK by Golf Monthly magazine. We are a private members club with active Mens and Ladies sections, friendly clubhouse atmosphere and very strong junior section.
Foxton Hall is a collection of rambling buildings but the clubhouse occupies the main building which oozes with character and the traditions of the game of golf. A special feature of “Foxton”, as we are generally known, is a 26-bed Dormy House within the clubhouse offering hotel accommodation, English Tourism 3 Star rating, to groups of visiting golfers in very comfortable twin or single rooms with en suite facilities. Visitors are always given a warm Northumbrian welcome at Alnmouth where we have buggies for hire and first class practice facilities.
From Newcastle (South) or Edinburgh (North) on the A1: Leave the A1 at signpost ‘Alnmouth/Shilbottle’ either just before Alnwick from north or just past from south. Travelling east through Shilbottle follow signs to Alnmouth. At roundabout in Hipsburn go straight to Alnmouth in front of you. At the war memorial roundabout turn left signposted ‘Foxton’ and follow road up the hill. At the end of a row of large houses the club is signposted on the right. Turn down Foxton Drive. The club is at the bottom of the road. Visitors car park is on left before the clubhouse. Dormy House guests may use the members car park past the clubhouse. BISHOP AUCKLAND
How to Find
Situated in the Land of the Prince Bishops, with views of the picturesque Wear Valley, it is easy to see why Bishop Auckland Golf Club is considered one of the treasures in County Durham. Founded in 1894 on land owned by the Church Commission, the parkland course has retained much of its original character whilst being modified to keep up with the demands of modern golf. The course has some of the best fairways you could wish to play from, with the rough, tough enough to punish a wayward shot without losing your ball. The greens are fine and true, together with the 7th hole, which has figured
in many a magazine. It is a beautiful parkland course sporting many challenging holes and the finest fairways in the County. Whether you have a single figure handicap or are just taking up the game you will enjoy a round here. The clubhouse was rebuilt in the 1990’s and enjoys spectacular views across the Wear Valley. It is well worth taking time to enjoy a coffee prior to playing, or a beer once you have finished. With the guarantee of a warm welcome and the superb dining facilities, with food to suit most palates, we are sure you will have an enjoyable and memorable visit.

BLYTH
Get onto the A189 (Northumberland Spine Rd) at the intersection with the A19. Turn off at the Junction signposted for Blyth Beach with a brown tourist sign. Follow the brown signs for the beach until you see the brown signs for the golf course.
Play Blyth and you’ll realise that there are some things in life that are still great value for money. Pound for pound the 6,400 yard 18 hole course on the outskirts of the seaport town in Northumberland has got to be the best days sport you’ll find for your hard earned cash. Developed on land where once stood a Pit Head and its entire mining community, Blyth has matured and developed into a tree lined parkland course with a par of 72- but don’t be fooled by its gently undulating character. Its first six holes are a test for any golfer and negotiate them without dropping too many shots and you can be set up for a good score.
But beware - there are some cunning water hazards on 9, 12, 13, and 14 that demand a strong nerve and a sure stroke. They don’t call the 13th “Sinkers” for nothing! Superb greens - many say the best in the county - will make your round one of the most pleasurable you’ll play in many a day. Following your round at Blyth Golf Club, please visit our friendly clubhouse where you will be looked after by our Steward, David Curry, ex European Tour Professional, Walker Cup Player and British Amateur Champion.

Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James was part of the design team that developed the course in 1994, which has been constantly improved over the years. Since 2001 the course has been under the ownership of Irish businessmen, John Fallon and William Kiely. Their long term commitment to the course has been evidenced by the ongoing ten year improvement plan.
It has panoramic views of Simonside hills to the West and the coast to the East. The course in beautiful rolling countryside provides a challenging round for all abilities, playing off the championship tees measuring 7065 yards, the medal tees at 6804 yards and the leisure tees at 6403 yards. The maturing parklands with water hazards, is both beautiful and tranquil and includes some of the finest greens in the region. Our signature hole is the par 4, 18th. At 463 yds off the white tees an accurate drive is essential to avoid the ditch which runs down and across the fairway. The second is a downhill shot to a two tier green well guarded by bunkers.

From spring to autumn the course is ablaze with the colour of wild flowers. The area is well known to botanists and has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the Nature Conservancy Council. The course offers a challenge to the experienced player as well as the novice. The wind frequently blows, changing its nature from day to day. Hartlepool is also unique for its
year-round availability as it is seldom closed because of the sandy nature of the soil. The course, which runs along the coast, has been designed to take advantage of the many natural features. The seaward side is protected by hillocks and dunes covered with marram grass. James Braid designed some of the holes, the most spectacular being the tenth which requires a straight drive and a good second shot between dunes. The course measures 6298 yards from the back tees and has a par of 70. Par for Ladies is 72, on a course which measures 5562 yards.

“As fine an inland course as you can find.” The words of Harry Vardon, designer of the original course, are as true today as they were in 1907 when he wrote them to the committee. The Spital course has a magnificent setting on the south bank of the Tyne, and makes full use of the rolling contours and thousands of mature trees to provide a course that is challenging enough to be a regular host of County and Regional events, both amateur and professional, and yet at 6,300 yards it is also enjoyable for the handicap golfer. The greens are regularly amongst the best in the County, and the views over the surrounding

LONGHIRST HALL

Longhirst Hall Longhirst golf, known for having a beautiful relaxed setting, has an alluring layout with nice country views and undulating greens that add character to the golf courses.
Scenic lakes, elevated tees and well placed bunkers provide interesting features that contribute to its excitement. Course conditions are known for being some of the best in Northumberland. Longhirst Hall Golf Course was opened in June 1997. This layout now plays as The Old Course, with full spec winter greens if required. It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. The Dawson Course is a more relaxing round of golf but can still give a bite if you’re not on your game. Wider fairways and large greens are more forgiving. Lakes and water feature in abundance again.

NEWBIGGIN
Newbiggin Golf Club is situated 2 miles from the main A189 road (Spine road) and is laid out along the Northumberland coastline forming a fine Links/Moorland course. For visitors traveling from the South, head North from the Tyne Tunnel to the North Seaton Roundabout, a distance of about 12 miles, and turn right (Eastwards) towards Newbiggin village, Travel through the village until you arrive at the end of the road. The Golf Club is located adjacent to the Church Point caravan park.
Newbiggin Golf Club is laid out over moorland at the north side of the village and follows the coast line towards Lynemouth. It is a links/ moorland course with many challenging holes which require a good drive from the tee to set up par opportunities. The greens are without doubt some of the best available in the whole of the northern counties. We do not use winter greens and can boast that even in the depths of Winter, when nearby courses are closed due to inclement weather, Newbiggin is almost always open to provide exciting golf, good food and excellent company afterwards. We pride ourselves on the
friendliness of both our Staff and members. They will certainly make you feel at home during your visit. Come and visit us and I’m sure your experience will be memorable. The 6th hole is one of our most challenging holes especially from the new back tees. It requires a true long drive to carry the gully (and miss the huge bunker) to give yourself a short iron to the hidden and very undulating green. Other players play left of the gully for safety but leave themselves a longer and more difficult approach shot to the green. When the wind is against this is one of the trickiest holes on the course.

Ramside Renaissance Durham resort’s £16m makeover Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club, County Durham’s only 36-hole golf resort, has just put the finishing touches to a £16m redevelopment which includes England’s newest championship golf course, a luxury spa, health club and 48 new hotel bedrooms. The Spa at Ramside, a new luxury spa, health club and wellness centre, opened its doors to the public in August and completes a four year redevelopment which has transformed the Durham resort into one of the finest golf and leisure destinations in the North of England. Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club sits in mature wooded parkland on the outskirts of Durham City close to the A1M heading North to Newcastle and beyond to Scotland. Family owned and run, the estate is home to a four star country hotel and Ramside Golf Club’s two championship golf courses, The Prince Bishops and The Cathedral Course – which opened for play in September 2014. Ramside’s courses offer a thrilling blend of
risk and reward golf with vast lakes, dramatic doglegs, sweeping fairways, expansive bunkering and some of the biggest and truest greens you’ll ever putt on. Next year is the club’s 20th anniversary and it continues to go from strength to strength. Bookings of golf breaks rose 200% in 2015 as golfers from across the UK travelled to play the Cathedral Course and combine an extended stay with a round on the highly rated Prince Bishops Course. The recent investment in golf and leisure facilities is already paying dividends in increased membership and exciting new initiatives are making the game more accessible, including Flexi-Golf - a flexible points based membership where you can join Ramside Golf Club from only £195 - and a new scholarship for Junior Golfers aged 12-16. Amen for the Cathedral Course The new course replaces an original 9-hole loop, built in 1996, and from which it takes its name and begins among the tall trees of the parkland estate. The holes then stretch out across a broad hilltop plateau with views over Durham City,
and its world famous UNESCO World Heritage Ste Cathedral and Castle, before dropping down into a picturesque wooded valley and returning back to the clubhouse, golf academy and 16-bay driving range. The middle ‘hilltop holes’ are spectacular with wide-open skies and 360 views of the Durham countryside. They are exposed to the elements and a prevailing South Easterly wind which gives the greens a links-like look and feel. They sit proudly, elevated as if part of the horizon, and are protected by the clever run-offs, swales and false fronts more often found in seaside golf. The ‘valley holes,’ from four through seven are peaceful and quiet, tranquil even. Here, two beautiful par-threes interchange with a pair of muscular par-fives, defended by wellplaced fairway and greenside bunkers. Later, the course returns to the valley for its most celebrated section. Inspired by Augusta Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner,’ and credits the famous Georgia golf course as his inspiration in shaping the holes.

From the North and South at junction 62 A1/M. Take the A690 towards Sunderland, straight through the traffic lights, under the Railway bridge and you should be in the right hand lane as our entrance is on your right. There is a filter lane but take care crossing in front of the oncoming traffic.
The downhill par-three 12th bears an uncanny resemblance to Augusta’s iconic ‘Golden Bell’ but instead of Rae’s Creek, Sherburn Beck stands guard at the front of the green. The beck is the defining feature at the par-four 13th and skirts the entire length of the hole just like Rae’s Creek does at the par-five 13th in Georgia. The Cathedral’s finishing stretch combines two gentle par-four holes with a fiendishly difficult 452-yard 17th hole. The route to the hole is punctuated by several lakes, fairway bunkers, encroaching trees and a difficult green. The 18th is a 215-yard par three with a trio of lakes to navigate before you reach the safety of a huge undulating green. Off Course: Relax and revive at The Spa at Ramside Golfers staying at Ramside Hall Hotel will love the opportunity to relax and unwind after golf at the new luxury health club, gym, spa and pool which opened in August 2015. The Spa at Ramside features a 25m swimming pool, hydrotherapy pools, caldarium, infinity
pool, plunge pool, Rasul mud chamber, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi’s. There are also 12 treatment rooms, a state-of-the art gym, exercise studios, beauty salon and an Asian Fusion restaurant, café and bar. Golfers can stay on the Whole in One golf & spa package or purchase individual treatments designed specifically with the golfer in mind. The Golfer’s Tonic is a restorative massage treatment targeting the back, shoulders, legs and ankles and is the perfect way to restore your body to health after a day walking the fairways. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide
Travel Spain > Costa del Sol
Costa del Sol Spain
The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.
In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.
The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
