FEATURED COURSE

Doncaster Golf Club Doncaster Golf Club was formed in 1894, moving to its’ current location in 1910, and is an attractive part heathland and part parkland course set on the southern outskirts of the town.

The course is built on acidic sandy subsoil conducive to finer grasses and excellent drainage. Visiting golfers can therefore always expect excellent playing conditions with firm and true greens, providing a challenge for all abilities. The course has developed over the years with early input from the renowned course architect Dr Alistair McKenzie and James Braid. Major changes to the course layout occurred in the 1970’s, overseen by Hawtree & Son, and course development continues to this day with work carried out to modernise the positioning

and design of bunkers and to regenerate the heather which used to be such a feature of the course. While the course is not overly long at 6266 yards off the white tees, it provides a good test, requiring great accuracy off the tee and into small greens. The first half of the course is primarily heathland in nature, with mature woodland, bunkers and heather making the opening five holes particularly challenging. While the remaining holes of the 1st nine provide some respite, accuracy from the tee is still required. Moving onto the back nine

The first half of the course is primarily heathland in nature, with mature woodland, bunkers and heather making the opening five holes particularly challenging

introduces the visitor to holes that are more parkland in nature, with a tee shot into the long par 3 11th from an elevated tee followed by the challenging par 5 12th hole, the only par 5 on the scorecard. Again, established woodland and bunkers, together with a few strategically positioned water hazards, provides an attractive and challenging environment for the golfer. On completion of their round, visiting golfers can avail themselves of the excellent clubhouse facilities and services, and enjoy the views from the clubhouse balconies. The Club has a friendly and active membership

and hosts a number of Open events throughout the year. More details on membership and Open events are available on the Club’s website at www.doncastergolfclub.co.uk. Doncaster Golf Club is also an ideal choice for Visiting Parties and Corporate Days, with an excellent course and facilities, a wide range of menu choices and friendly staff on hand to ensure your party has an enjoyable day with us. Join the Hole In One Club by playing on the Golf Guide Tour

There’s nothing quite like bagging a hole in one, but beyond the bragging rights there’s never anything tangible to help you celebrate hitting the perfect shot. Until now. Five Golfers from the North of England including four thanks to membership of the Golf Guide Tour are set to enjoy the trip of a lifetime to TPC Sawgrass courtesy of the Hole In One Club a unique membership scheme that rewards golfers from the UK and Ireland who score that dream ace. It is the brainchild of four golfers, one of whom recorded that dream ace only to be disappointed with how little there was out their to acknowledge the achievement. With that in mind, the group set out to reward fellow golfers with the ultimate trip to play the most iconic Par 3 in the world - the 17th Hole on the Stadium Course, TPC Sawgrass. For an annual membership fee of just £5, all members will be in with a chance of winning a seat on the plane to TPC Sawgrass for the Hole in One Club Grand Final. The only requirement? They need to hit a hole in one during the season which runs from April 1st to September 30th. Talking about the Club, Director Graeme Lisle said: “Hitting a hole in one is no mean feat, and whatever your age or ability, it can happen

anytime you play. You can spend every single day of the season on the course and there’s no guarantee you’re going to bag one. When they do occur it’s something to be celebrated, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with the trip of a lifetime TPC Sawgrass.” This year, ten winners plus friends and family are winging their way to Florida, however not all of them scored a hole in one. Membership also includes the chance to win a Golden Ticket - a seat on the plane to Sawgrass regardless of whether you hit an ace or not. Graeme said: “You might have a few bad days, an unlucky bounce, or maybe you just don’t have the opportunity to play as much as you want during the summer. The Golden Ticket makes sure that everyone has the chance of winning, but the easiest way to get to Florida is still to bag an ace.” For the first time in 2017, the very first hole in one of the season will go to Sawgrass regardless of how many are scored during the rest of the year, giving members even greater incentive to to get out on the golf course come April.

Join today for just the price of two coffee’s and get ready for the beginning of the season on 1st April 2017. You can sign up hio-club.com.

Vox Golf Modernising competitive golf Whatever about the equipment revolution in golf there is no doubting that digital technology has totally transformed how we play and interact with the game. Couple this revolution with today’s fast paced lifestyles and the need for golf to “Speed up its act” and VoxGolf comes into its own. In essence, VoxGolf is an app that brings modern forms of competition to your phone.

The concept was devised by Daniel Lewis and former Irish international and Challenge Tour winner Stephen Browne and the aim is simple, to create a better experience for golfers. In 2013 Browne teamed up with Lewis as they looked at mixing their passion for golf and digital platforms to make a better experience for golfers. “When you look at other sports like darts, cricket or snooker for example, they have all moved to faster competitive formats and all have grown rapidly because of this evolution.

Golf is moving to new formats at a slower pace but with new initiatives from the European Tour and PGA of America for shorter format events and the development of more 9 hole courses worldwide the game seems to be moving in the right direction” So how can VoxGolf benefit the club golfer? Simply put it gives you more choices and the opportunity to have some fun. The way golf is going now people have less time to play, everybody is being squeezed no matter what age they are so the idea of shorter, more fun,

formats with options of a competitive side is where golf needs to go. With VoxGolf you can get to the 13th tee of your round all warmed up and enter a competition for the last six holes. It can turn the casual mentality of a 6 or 9 hole game into a competitive event against a field. You can run open events any day of the week on any course as a group, society, member or visitor and all compete in one event. The options are endless.. Visit www.voxgolf.com

NEWS & FEATURES

Setting up competitions is extremely simple and you can enter the format, course and number of holes, as well as the start and end time. Stay in touch with your golfing group or members with the VoxGolf built-in messaging capability. Announce winners, upcoming events or proshop discount days instantly with the VoxGolf platform. 2. PLAY The VoxGolf app allows players to sign in to games on their mobile phone, with cashless

entry fees, a digital score card and a live leaderboard showing progress in real time. Simply find and enter Vox Games directly from your phone. The app offers a cash or cashless option via credit card, as well as a location feature which shows open games available near you. Once you’re signed into a game, you can enter your score after each hole on the app. Number of holes, handicap allowance and indices on the digital scorecard are all automatically tailored to the competition format of the day. During and after play, each competitor can see a live leaderboard shown in real time on the app. Players can track their progress in the standings, as well as viewing fellow participant’s score cards. VoxGolf is ideal for enhancing the competitive experience beyond the usual “1st, 2nd,3rd” winners’ circle. The platform is fully customisable to offer options such as “Front

6, Middle 6, Last 6” competitions, a Par 3 or a Par 5 Shootout. You just build a game that suits where and when you want to play. 3. WIN Results are announced on the app immediately after the last score has been returned through push notifications, and winners can redeem their prize or avail of vouchers offered through the Vox Store. Your club, professional or society / competition organiser may offer physical prizes for winners, or opt for the Vox Credits system. Gather Vox Credits each time you win and spend them in the Vox Store to redeem vouchers for your favourite retail outlets or your club Proshop. From a golf club point of view VoxGolf is just as useful. It allows the club administrator send push notifications to members, collect all data from users in that club, including useful game analytics on playing habits.

Leeds Cup Returns to Cobble Hall 2017 The oldest trophy still played for in professional golf is returning to Leeds Golf Club where it was founded back in 1902 marking another year of success in the re-emergence of one of the oldest clubs in Leeds.

Established in 1896 Leeds golf club or “Cobble Hall” as it is known in wider golfing circles suffered the same as many golf clubs facing the challenges of dwindling memberships and rising costs and in 2012 this led to an uncertain future for the club and its members. It is thanks to those members and a new board appointed at that time that Cobble Hall is now very firmly back on the golfing map with membership up by 30% and visitors by 70% and the PGA’s decision to bring back the Leeds Cup to its spiritual home is another massive vote of confidence. The mood around ‘Cobble’ has never been more positive. The difficult times inevitably led to a review of the club’s operations and changes were made with positive effects. In came Professional Ady Newboult who first extended the Pro shop and the services on offer and now has an impressive teaching and fitting centre with all the latest technology and has built a state of the art indoor simulator where members, guests and visitors can pitch their skills against one of many famous courses from around the world. Assistant Professional Andrew Rigby has revitalised a junior section and Saturday mornings are thriving with up to 20 children enjoying junior coaching. He also re-established

the Wilkinson Sword Trophy last year which had a healthy field of 30. The beers served by new steward Dave Bayley now enjoy the Cask Mark status and in 2015 the club was voted Golf Club of the Year by the trade group magazine Club Mirror. Drink and food go hand in hand and the new catering team Ken O’ Brien and son Sam are serving up great fare and winning more awards with the club being named Golf Catering Club of the Year 2016 again by the trade magazine Club Mirror. Legendary course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie joined Leeds Golf Club in 1900 and during his ten year membership advised on the bunkering and course layout on this beautiful parkland course. With major investment in machinery being made the course continues to improve year on year and having now established that the proposed new ring road around Leeds will not impact on the course long term improvements can now be planned. The Leeds Cup was presented to the PGA on its formation in 1901 by the Lord Mayor of Leeds and the then President of Leeds Golf Club William Penrose Green to be competed for annually by professional golfers, and the 102nd staging will be held on May 16-17 preceded by a pro-am on the 15th.

The first competition was held in 1902 at Leeds Golf Club. Leeds Cup Winners and also Open Champions between 1902-1930. Harry Vardon, Ted Ray, Sandy Herd, George Duncan. The 1929 winner, Abe Mitchell, unattached, became private professional to Samuel Ryder, who was a member at the Veralum (St. Albans) club. The figure on the Ryder Cup is modelled on him. Leeds Cup Winners and Ryder Cup players George Duncan, Archie Compston and Abe Mitchell were part of the historic 1929 team who played at Moortown Golf Club. Bill Davies, Ted Jarman, Jack Busson, John Fallon, Eric Green, Syd Scott, Alec Caygill, Gordon J. Brank and Howard Clark were all Leeds Cup winners and played in the Ryder Cup in later years. The 1939 winner was Bill Davies of Wallasey, who, at the outbreak of WW2, buried the Leeds Cup along with other silverware from his club, in an ice box and sacks in the sand dunes along the coast until the end of hostilities in1945. PGA North secretary Jonathan Paine said: “The club was very keen to stage the Leeds Cup again based on the huge success they enjoyed the last time they hosted it. It’s great news for Yorkshire golf and if everything goes to plan we expect it will continue at Cobble Hall on a regular basis.”

South Moor The Golf Guide Tour & MacKenzie Masters

It’s hard for a venue hosting one of the 2017 Golf Guide Tour events to add extra incentive to enter a pairs series already offering the prize of a free golf trip to Spain at every tournament. PLUS the opportunity to play for another free trip, to Mauritius!

But that’s what Durham County golf club South Moor have done by announcing a new series of open individual stableford tournaments honouring the late Alister MacKenzie. MacKenzie, the son of a Scottish doctor who was born in Leeds and died in California, designed both the South Moor course and Augusta National and is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. This year, for the first time, South Moor are staging the MacKenzie Masters series, sponsored by CustomFitGolf. This begins in May with the first of four monthly Saturday opens. Ten club golfers from each event will go through to the inaugural MacKenzie Masters Grand Final – also at South Moor – on September 19. How this impacts on the 2017 Golf Guide Tour lies in the dates of the MacKenzie Masters Saturday Opens, which are May 6, June 10, July 8 and August 5. The date for the South Moor event in the Golf Guide Tour is August 11. So anybody who has never enjoyed the course can play in any or all of four competitive warmup tournaments ahead of the Golf Guide Tour event at the same venue. The entry fee for the MacKenzie Masters Saturday Opens is £12.50. Competing for the Golf Guide Tour’s free trip to Mauritius involves playing in four of their 2017 events with the top 10 pairs going to Hillside for a final to decide the winners. Meanwhile the new South Moor series has been welcomed by one of the world’s

leading experts on MacKenzie designed courses, Andrew Mair, from Cramlington, Northumberland. This year Mair, a member of the Northumberland club in Gosforth, is celebrating his 30th year of partnership in a course design business with former Ryder Cup captain Mark James. The MacKenzie portfolio of courses also includes Royal Melbourne and Cypress Point, dramatically overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the Monterey Peninsula in California. “This new series is a fitting way for South Moor to honour a great man and their great course,” said Mair. “South Moor is not only an important contribution to Britain’s golfing heritage but also great fun to play and a fine example of MacKenzie at his best. “He endowed their fast, mainly vast and beautifully shaped greens with contours, swales, crowns, tiers and terraces. And amid a natural terrain punctuated by gorse, heather and bracken, the sloping and undulating rig and furrow fairways on the par fours and fives make the course fascinating to play and encourage a sense of adventure. “South Moor is a thinking golfers’ paradise. For connoisseurs of the sport, it should not be missed.” Carefully blended into 187 acres of stunning countryside, South Moor started life as a miners only Coal Board club in 1923. MacKenzie was a friend of Basil Sadler, managing director of

Holmside & South Moor Collieries. The South Moor course is in Stanley, eight miles west of the cricket Test venue in Chester-leStreet. A man of many talents, MacKenzie was the British Army’s camouflage expert in World War I, served as a surgeon in the Somerset Light Infantry during the Boer War and gained degrees at Cambridge University in medicine, chemistry and natural science. He considered psychology to be of enormous value to both golf architecture and camouflage and said: “It enables one to judge what is likely to give pleasurable excitement to the golfer and improvement in morale to the soldier.” Golfers who would like to book a tee time for any the four MacKenzie Masters qualifiers should visit www.southmoorgc.co.uk

A round of golf HERE at Slaley Hall, golf is in our blood

We are one of the UK’s leading golfing venues and every year we welcome visitors from all over the world looking to test their golfing brains on two championship-standard courses.

Our highly-acclaimed Hunting and Priestman courses offer golfers everything they could possibly need or want from a day on the course, regardless of your skills, ability or requirements. Set amidst our 1000 acres of prime Northumberland forest, the Hunting course is named after Samuel Hunting, the man who first bought the estate back in the 1800s. Described by critics as the ‘Gleneagles of the North East’ the Hunting course was designed by Dave Thomas – renowned for his unique and interesting course designs – and opened for business in 1989. Since then it has played host to numerous European Tour and Senior Tour events and is regarded as one of the country’s greatest courses. The 18-hole Priestman course is the newer of the two and offers a contrasting experience to the Hunting.

Designed by Neil Coles, the then chairman of the PGA, it welcomed its first players in 1999. The course itself has a more open feel to it and is a favourite among big-hitters and strategists alike thanks to its selection of challenges. It’s a large, expansive course punctuated by several water hazards, good bunkers and lengthy fairways and boasts enviable views across the stunning Northumberland countryside. Regardless of your own level, we have everything you need to enjoy your time on our courses. Tuition at Slaley Hall is brought to you by our head teaching PGA Professional Steve Fawcitt, who is dedicated to improving your game in a friendly learning environment. As well as a practice green for perfecting your putting, our driving range is fully floodlit so you can practice even after the sun has gone down. Along with this we have a USGA Tour standard

short game area, ideal for all year round practice. Inside our private PGA teaching room we can iron out or custom fit your golfing needs using state of art Trackman coaching software. And of course, what better way to unwind and relive your triumphs on the course than by topping off the day at the 19th hole? The Claret Jug serves simple, modern food using fresh, local produce to help you refuel after a hard day. We offer a selection of Pay & Play packages as well as one and two night golf breaks – perfect for a short getaway or just to recharge your batteries.

Kirkbymoorside To host William Hunt Trilby Tour

On June 29th this year Kirkbymoorside Golf Course will feature on SKY television in Great Britain, Ireland and North America when the club hosts the Yorkshire Championship round of SKY TV’s William Hunt Trilby Tournament described officially as ‘the largest amateur golf television series in the UK and Europe’.

With viewing figures in the UK estimated at over 3.5 million the exposure should enhance the profile of the course and club and also create revenue for businesses in and around Ryedale. The brain child of golf aficionado and Saville Row designer William Hunt, the series takes place during the summer over several high profile courses throughout the country, ranging from Dorset to Northumberland and including The Oxfordshire which hosted the Benson and Hedges International from 1996 - 1999. The top ten players in each of the ‘county championships’ qualify for the National final. In the past players have described playing in the event as ‘the nearest an amateur golfer can get to the professional experience of playing under the pressure of an international televised event’. As would be expected, players come from a wide geographical area in the past players have come from Dubai, South Africa, Czech Republic

and Portugal making the competition a truly International event. Although the Championship is fully subscribed nationally, local players can qualify and play in this years event via 3 qualifying days to be held at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club on 30 April, 31 May and 11 June, booking is available online at www.kirkbymoorsidegolf.co.uk Sponsorship packages are available for businesses and individuals, some of which include an entry into the main Championship on 29th June at Kirkbymoorside. Please contact the club on 01751 431525 for more details. The atmosphere created on the day by television cameras, banners around the course, and spectators is further enhanced by players wearing clothing from the William Hunt Golf Collection – presented as part of their qualifying prize. Recorded in June the series will be screened on Sky Sports in September.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

North Yorkshire Introduction

North Yorkshire North Yorkshire is England’s largest county with an area of more than 800,000 hectares to explore. The county is fascinating, and no matter what your interest or time to spare, offers a huge range of activities and attractions. The county of North Yorkshire stretches across Northern England from its spectacular coastline in the East, across Moors and fertile valleys to the Dales in the West, and attracts millions of tourists who flock to see its traditional market towns, beautiful countryside and historic sites. The county’s greatest asset is its wonderful scenery, whether

it is the NorthYork Moors, to be enjoyed on foot, by car or steam railway or the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales. Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people’s living rooms across the world by the success of television series such as the stories of James Herriot and the Heartbeat adventures.
Along the 45 miles of coastline there are the traditional resorts of Scarborough and Filey and Whitby. The ruins of monasteries scatter the county at places such as Rievaulx, Jervaulx and Fountains Abbey - a World Heritage site.

The Harrogate District is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, flourishing towns, villages and heritage sites. Harrogate has a rich spa history, combined with parks, gardens and floral displays.
Close by is the medieval market town of Knaresborough, famous for its 14th Century ruined castle and Mother Shiptons Cave. There are also spectacular memories of bygone days in North Yorkshire with magnificent structures which have stood for centuries. Selby Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are two of the finest examples of English architecture to be found anywhere in the world.
North Yorkshire is indeed a land of diversity.

Nestling in the Vale of Pickering, east of York and a few miles from the coastal resort of Scarborough, a day at Ganton is a day to remember. Golf was first played at Ganton in the summer of 1891 on a course laid out by Tom Chisholm of St Andrews who had assistance from Robert Bird, the Club’s first professional and head greenkeeper. The site chosen then formed part of Sir Charles Legard’s Ganton Estate and was very rough ground, covered with whins and many varieties of grasses and wild flowers. Thousands of years previously this area had been submerged as part of an inlet from the North Sea, and the natural sandy subsoil was an ideal place to develop a golf course. Distance from Scarborough was eleven miles by road, but development was more influenced by the North Eastern Railway Line with Ganton Halt being ¼ mile from the Clubhouse. The proximity of a railway was often a factor in the development of golf courses in the 19th Century, particularly so in Ganton’s case as the membership extended to those living in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Ganton was soon established as a course where history was to be made. In 1896 Harry Vardon came as professional and it was during his stay (to 1903) that he won the first three of his six Open Championships, and it was to Ganton that he brought back the U.S. Championship Trophy in 1900. Ganton has hosted a succession of major amateur and professional tournaments for men and women. In 1964 the Amateur Championship was played with Michael Lunt just failing to defend from the previous year, losing to Gordon Clark in the final at the 39th. In staging the Amateur Championship again in 1977 (Peter McEvoy, the 1999 and 2001 Walker Cup Captain, was the winner) and 1991 (the winner was Gary Wolstenholme) Ganton remains the only inland course to have held the competition. Indeed Gary Player once said of Ganton that it is the only inland course worthy of holding the Open Championship. Ganton is proud to have been so closely linked with the story of British golf. Deep and prolific bunkers, savage rough and impenetrable gorse have made for a searching examination of the game’s best players.

Approaching Kirkbymoorside from Thirsk on the A170, turn left at the roundabout into the town (if approaching from Pickering turn right). Follow the main street until you reach a mini roundabout at the top of the town. Turn left, and then take the first turning right (brown sign to golf course) about 150 yards down the road. Follow the road (Manor Vale) through the wood until you reach the Golf Club car park.

Kirkbymoorside Golf Club offers a challenging golf course set in a beautiful, quiet, rural surrounding on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

to test your golf on a gem of a course in the peace and tranquillity of superb countryside then you can do no better than enjoy the hospitality offered at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club.

Whatever the time of year, you will be impressed with the spectacular scenery and the peace and quiet which will surround you during the whole of your round. The view over the moors from the 13th tee is unsurpassed in the whole of the North of England. Looking away from the moors, the course offers distant views of the Yorkshire Wolds and The Hambleton Hill – both areas of outstanding natural beauty. If you want

Signature Holes Like all courses, Kirkbymoorside has its signature holes. Whatever your handicap the ‘right to left’ drive from the 7th tee will provide a true test to those seeking par and the 10th is not named the ‘widow maker’ for nothing. It’s a tough drive on the par four 13th, but the view from the tee out to the moors past the village of Gillamoor, makes even the poorest tee shot (almost) forgettable.

Renowned for its famous Spa Baths and visitor attractions, there are many reasons to visit Harrogate, but none are more valid than the opportunity to try out the sensational course at Oakdale Golf Club, bizarrely, within a ten minute walk of the town. Established in 1914 and designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Oakdale’s unique mix of moor and parkland has earned it a reputation to rival even the very best venues in Northern England.

Moreover, few facilities offer such a close tie with accommodation in the adjacent town centre, providing the

ideal stay and play situation. At just under 6,500 yards, the course offers a true test to golfers of varying abilities, generous fairways and beautiful scenery abounds. Set in 130 acres of naturally undulating terrain, you can expect to come across a diverse range of wildlife, with foxes and roe deer a common sight. With no two holes the same, it’s a well know fact that scoring at Oakdale depends on how well you negotiate the par 3s with both the 9th and 12th protected by water.

RUDDING PARK

50

Rudding Park Golf Club Unrivalled facilities and exceptional customer service Rudding Park offers the most comprehensive golf facility in the north of England, with 18 and 6 hole courses and extensive practice and academy amenities, set in beautiful parkland. Popular with golfers from the local area and further afield, it is ideal for a golf break with an overnight stay at award winning Rudding Park Hotel. The new Spa at Rudding Park is opening May 2017.

Hawtree Course Designed by renowned golf course architect Martin Hawtree, the championship 18 hole, par 72 Hawtree course runs through the beautiful 19th century parkland. The championship course proves a challenge for even the most seasoned golfer, with woodland, parkland and water hazards. The signature 14th hole is aptly named Rhododendron Glade due to the flourish of colour surrounding the green during summer. The 163 yard par 3 is well guarded by three bunkers at the front, with another hidden from view to the right. The hole, which plays uphill and into the prevailing wind is a challenge for golfers of all abilities, with the undulating green making par no easy score. 10 Hole Game Perfect for a shorter round of golf on a

Championship course, the additional 19th and 20th holes provide golfers with an afternoon 10 hole game option. Available everyday from 12 noon (Nov-Mar) or 4pm (Apr-Oct). The 19th signature hole is a tight, tree lined dog-leg right par 4 with a premium on accuracy off the tee. Those wanting a shorter iron into the green need to hit a low fade round the corner as the prevailing wind blows from right to left. The second shot has to be judged to the sloping green as there is trouble over the green. Repton Short Course Designed to provide golf in an hour, the 6 hole, par 18 Repton Short Course is perfect for beginners, a warm up round or to hone your short game. The first of its kind in the North of England, the course includes a number of water hazards, principal of which is the signature 5th hole which is based on the world-famous 17th at

Sawgrass, Florida. Playing the same yardage (137 yards) the daunting tee shot which plays to an island green, puts emphasis on club selection. Visitors & Societies Whether planning a visit as an individual, couple or society, visitors to Rudding Park can be confident they’ll be looked after - 98% of golfers visiting on a break rated their experience Excellent or Very Good, and commented on the “amazing service”, “the staff in particular were outstanding” and “nothing seemed too much trouble”.* Overnight golf escapes are available from £133pp, based on double occupancy. A range of packages are available for societies and corporate groups, starting from £28pp. Selected packages include competitions such as Nearest the Pin, Longest Drive and Beat the Professional, with a post match dinner or BBQ.

Although Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club dates back to 1909, the present course was designed by James Braid and established in 1928. The course starts on the cliff top and then moves inland threading its way between trees and spinneys, with lovely views of the North Yorkshire Moors before returning to the cliff top for the final three holes. The course is sufficiently undulating to be interesting without being excessively hilly and is a tough but fair test for golfers of all abilities. With the prevailing wind from the west the first five holes provide a stiff test of golf and par on these holes is a good start.

The short 7th and the par 5s at 8 and 9 provide some respite before the next major test “Amen corner” (10, 11 and 12) is tackled. Hole 10 requires a long straight drive and the 11th is a memorable hole played from an elevated tee over water to a green surrounded by trees. The 12th is a testing dogleg played around trees to the right to a raised green. The 13th and 14th are birdie chances as the course winds its way back to the 15th tee where once again the sea comes into view. The homeward run has glorious sea views across the North Bay towards the Castle before arriving back at the Clubhouse where a welcome drink awaits.

How to Find

SCARTHINGWELL

Within easy driving distance of both Leeds and York, we are situated just outside of the village of Towton on the A162 which runs between Tadcaster and Sherburn-in-Elmet. For those traveling from further afield, Scarthingwell is located within 10 minutes drive of the A1M and M1 motorways.

An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. Each of the partners plays an active role in the day-to-day operation of the Golf Course and at least one partner is usually on-site at most times of the day.

The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Signature Holes You can enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the Yorkshire countryside on this course but remember to pay as much attention to the 9th and 10th holes. The 9th is a tricky par-3 with an approach to a severely guarded green, whilst the 10th includes a dog leg and an approach over water.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

West Yorkshire Introduction

West Yorkshire West Yorkshire has a great deal to offer visitors to the county with its heritage attractions, grand stately homes, green open spaces, canals, towns and cities. Composed of the districts of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, a network of paths and cycle-ways both in towns and the countryside allow for easy access to the many sites of interest. Leeds – once the hub of the North based on its manufacturing and textile industries, is now a leading vibrant legal, finance and retail centre by day and lively cosmopolitan city by night. Award winning restaurants, wine bars, music venues, theatres and art galleries offer

a vast array of entertainment to satisfy any appetite. Vanguard architectural sites such as Bridgewater Place, 1 City Square and the Waterfront properties sit comfortably with the historic structures of the Corn Exchange and Leeds Kirkgate Market. An exciting retail experience is on offer with the likes of Harvey Nichols nestling next to the renowned Victoria Quarter, boasting an abundance of boutiques as well as well-known high street names. Leeds is also the sporting home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the most decorated Club in County Cricket History, and of course the celebrated Leeds United Football Club.

Proud of its long and important history, Bradford is home to a number of important historical buildings and sites; including one of only two World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire, and the most visited museum outside of London. The city has a lively multicultural vibe with a variety of diversions including the esteemed Bradford Alhambra Theatre. From a golfing perspective, West Yorkshire is home to some of the best inland courses in Britain. Included in this list are Alwoodley, Moortown and Moor Allerton who all sit proudly in the list of the top 100 courses in England.

Celebrating its 125 anniversary The Bradford Golf Club has been a Herbert Fowler masterpiece since 1923, but traces its historical roots much farther back in time to 1891. The last two years have seen the club embark on a thoughtful re-discovery of its Fowler heritage, with the aim of realigning holes to offer an enjoyable round of golf for the mid to high handicap golfer and a more challenging golf course for the low handicap golfer, with the 17th described as iconic. Set in 6,3000 yards, with stunning views over Baildon and Rombald Moors.

The course runs in two loops with the 10th and 18th holes finishing outside the clubhouse. The once tree-lined fairways are now more open and natural, fast greens with subtle borrows are a true test for any golfer. The course continues to be used for prestigious Yorkshire Championships and is the home of The Hawksworth Trophy, a 36-hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers in Northern England. The Clubhouse now fully renovated, it is a great place for food, drinks and society golf days.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.

It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

After playing why not visit our Clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality. It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.

Founded in 1892, Headingley is the oldest golf club in Leeds and is set on the edge of the beautiful suburb of Adel, 15 minutes from the city centre. The course was laid out and shaped in the early 20th century by a number of world-renowned architects including Dr Alister MacKenzie and Harry S. Colt. In a rural setting, the course enjoys many wonderful views and an array of memorable holes that make full use of the varied and dramatic terrain. The par-4 third hole is challenging with trees aligning the fairway and strategically placed bunkers to catch out a wayward drive on the right. While the signature par-3 17th is great

on the eye and offers an opportunity for a hole-in-one as the green feeds the ball towards the hole. Beware though, it can also be a card wrecker as it is guarded by an army of bunkers and heavy rough. Although it is presented in a traditional style, since 2013 the heathland course has been undergoing a comprehensive and ambitious Course Improvement Plan to ensure that it continues to be a venue of choice for discerning golfers. After your round relax in the clubhouse which boasts three bar areas but perhaps more importantly, a warm and friendly atmosphere. The 5 star reviews on TripAdvisor say it all.

The club has several special offers with or without catering. Please contact Tel: 0113 267 9573 or email: manager@headingleygolfclub.co.uk for the offers available at the time of your visit.

LEEDS GOLF CLUB

How to Find

Our 18-hole parkland course is situated on the north side of Leeds and is one of the best golf clubs in Yorkshire. Founded in 1896 it is the original home of the Leeds Cup, the oldest trophy in professional golf. Set in approximately 80 acres, our stunning course challenges golfers of all ages and abilities. Only four miles from the city centre and close to the Leeds Ring Road, the course has a distinctly tranquil feel with many of the holes commanding spectacular views of Roundhay. Leeds Golf Club offers something for everyone - men, women, seniors and juniors, from experienced players to those who have

never picked up a golf club before. We also welcome corporate members and golf societies who wish to visit our wonderful course. We have a relatively low number of full members compared to other courses which enables you to play at your time of choice on most days. Signature Hole: Hole 7, Par 4, 385 yards (White Tee) One of the most dramatic holes on the course. Aim your tee shot between the fairway bunkers. From there, an accurate second shot should reach the two tier green.

We are also the UK home of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy with two fully qualified Leadbetter approved instructors. The original 18-hole Wike Ridge golf course opened for play in 1993, being designed by former English Golf Union president and renowned golf course architect, Donald Steel. However, the start of 2012 witnessed the beginning of a major programme of improvements and an undertaking to transform it into Leeds’ very best modern golf course. The redevelopment, drawn up in conjunction with Jonathan Gaunt of Gaunt Golf Design, took the course’s strongest attributes and added real ‘wow’ factor – the new iteration being a more memorable, more engaging

Add to this the course’s greater definition – thanks to heavily revised/ additional bunkering and 1400 transplanted trees – and it’s clear to see why the new Wike Ridge course has a very bright future. The Oaks is unique 12-hole par-3 pay and play golf course, built at the same time and to the same specification as our Wike Ridge championship layout. Far from being an afterthought, The Oaks offers an excellent challenge for golfers of all standards by virtue of a great mix in hole-length and gently undulating greens. The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.

The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

East Yorkshire & Humberside Introduction

East Yorkshire & Humberside “East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea.” East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. To the west are the Yorkshire Wolds, a chalk formation, and you can explore the rolling hills along the 79 mile long

Yorkshire Wolds Way. To the south-east is the flat coastal plain of Holderness which terminates at the wild Spurn Peninsular East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea. Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a narrow projection of sand and shingle, constantly changing with the tides and a stop over for thousands of migrating birds. Bridlington, with its beautiful beaches and brand new award winning promenades and gardens, offers a host of all weather activities. This famous seaside resort has an irresistible appeal for people of all ages and a special Bridlington welcome that is guaranteed to warm your heart.

BROUGH

From the West via M62/A63: After Junction 38 the M62 becomes a dual carriageway, the A63, approximately 3 miles after this change exit left signed South Cave, Market Weighton and Beverley. At the T junction turn right following local signs for Brough. Carry on to a roundabout take the 3rd exit towards Brough and Elloughton continue to the next roundabout and take the 2nd exit into Cave Road, signed Brough Aircraft Factory. Brough Golf Club is a mile along this road on your left hand side.

A warm welcome awaits all visitors to Brough Golf Club, an attractive and challenging Inland Parkland Course located in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The mature nature of the course reflects its historical roots. The Club was founded in 1891 and celebrated its Centenary in 1993. “A testing par 68 for the scratch player without being too difficult for the higher handicap.” To which can be added, “An attractive course, with good golfing qualities, which makes it a pleasure to play again and again.” Brough is a thinking man’s course, where accurate positioning of the

tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers. Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-in-cheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

The course record of 64 has not been beaten but was equalled in 2014 by club member John Samuel. Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

South Yorkshire Introduction

South Yorkshire You could be forgiven for thinking that all South Yorkshire can offer is an industrial history of mining and steel manufacturing. The main towns within this Yorkshire and Humber county did grow around those industries, themselves having huge educational and historical appeal for visitors but, thanks to multi-million pound investment via government initiatives and Heritage Lottery funding, the whole area is buzzing with regeneration and redevelopment, seeing some of its slightly dusty, historical gems being given a good polish and the chance to shine again.

In addition to firm favourites (Doncaster Railway, Doncaster Racecourse), and those restored to their former glories (Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park Museum, Wentworth Castle), the area is brimming with new, lively, modern venues offering a variety of entertainment, culture and attractions for more cosmopolitan tourists including: art galleries & exhibitions (Millennium Galleries, Graves Art Gallery), contemporary/traditional music & theatre (Sheffield City Hall, The Leadmill, The Harley), sporting fixtures (Don Valley

Stadium, Hallam FM Arena, The Crucible), and state of the art shopping centres (Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks) - all of which mean this area is now a firm favourite for those visiting ‘up North’. If you enjoy the outdoors, South Yorkshire is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Pennine Yorkshire and the Trans Pennine Trail which cuts right across the region. So there is never a shortage of things to see and do in this abundant area of Yorkshire.

From the M18 going north east from the M1 and the Sheffield region. After you pass over the A1M leave the M18 at junction 3. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the Great Yorkshire Way. Go straight on at the next roundabout. Bear left at the traffic lights onto the B6463 and turn left onto A638. Arrive at the course which is on the left, look out for the brown ‘Golf Club’ sign at the entrance.

Major changes to the course layout occurred in the 1970’s, overseen by Hawtree & Son, and course development continues to this day with work carried out to modernise the positioning and design of bunkers and to regenerate the heather which used to be such a feature of the course. Moving onto the back nine

introduces the visitor to holes that are more parkland in nature, with a tee shot into the long par 3 11th from an elevated tee followed by the challenging par 5 12th hole, the only par 5 on the scorecard. The Club has a friendly and active membership and hosts a number of Open events throughout the year. Please contact our Professional, Graham Bailey, on 01302 868404 or professional@doncastergolfclub.co.uk to discuss your specific requirements.

It’s the home club of Matthew Fitzpatrick, the rising star on professional Tour circuits who made his Ryder Cup debut in 2016 in a season that saw him win the DP World Tour Championship and the Nordea Masters. When time between tournaments allows, Matt is seen playing at Hallamshire with his pals, including 2016 Masters Tournament Champion Danny Willett, who is also a Sheffield lad. Although not particularly long at around 6500 yards off the championship tees, the course is regarded as a challenging test for golfers of all standards. It is kept in magnificent condition all year round, with hand cut greens renowned throughout the region for their

speed and consistency. The elevated position of the course and peaty soils ensures swift drainage, allowing members and guests to enjoy their golf on an almost year round basis. Hallamshire, characterised by large pockets of heather, gorse and bilberries, is noted as one of just 400 heather-clad heathland golf courses in the UK by the Sports Turf Research Institute, which describes the course as “prestigious, challenging and attractive”. The club holds annual Opens and Charity events, details can be found on the website www.hallamshiregolfclub.co.uk or on Twitter @hallamshiregolf

The calibre of this South Yorkshire course is supported by a most impressive list of credentials which span a whole spectrum of iconic golfing greats, such as the great John Jacobs, who was literally brought up on the Club’s premises and twice Captained Europe’s Ryder Cup Team, to Designers Alister Mackenzie, Willie Park Jnr. and even “old” Tom Morris himself, who have each added to the architecture of the course. The Club has hosted the Curtis Cup and numerous Pro Tour events, which include the sensational 1957 Ryder Cup victory for the GB Team led by Dai Rees, and in the present day, has an exciting array of young amateur talent who choose to play and develop on this famous course in the hope of emulating Lindrick’s elite playing members who include a former World Number 1, a US Masters Winner and a current trio of Ryder Cup Players.

has been done sympathetically to maintain character and ambience but also, crucially, to bolster the challenge of this atmospheric course. Off the course the traditional Members’ Club welcome remains, while the changing facilities and our Ryder Cup Suite have been completely rebuilt to accommodate the needs and expectations of the modern golfer. Our staff will do their utmost to ensure that all who visit Lindrick really enjoy a combination of our historic legacy and modern golfing trends, and will want to repeat it regularly in the future.

The Club’s members have invested over £2m in recent enhancements at the Club. Two green to tee tunnels, new strategic fairway bunkers, the remodelling of greenside bunkers and new Championship tees has improved 11 holes in total so far, with more planned. Everything

The Golf Club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent Club House. Surrounded by beautiful timbered parkland the course is easily accessible from the M1 or A1 in South Yorkshire. Also, being closely situated to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, it is accessible from far afield.

Originally a nine hole course laid out by Sandy Herd, in 1906 it was increased to eighteen holes and was subsequently modified by James Braid. Resulting from this is an exceptionally well laid out course, where golf is played over parkland of great beauty. The course record of 62 was recorded by Simon Coumbe of Pontefract GC during the second round of the inaugural Lee Westwood Trophy held in September 2005. He broke the previous record score of 65, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Ian Garbutt. The golf shop at Rotherham Golf Club prides itself on retail experience and exceptional customer service.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

North East Introduction

North East

North East England is one of the nine official regions of England. Covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside. Northumberland is the Northernmost of the English counties, separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River and borders on the North Sea. The terrain is level along the wild, rugged coastline and hilly in the interior, where high moor lands alternate with fertile valleys. Hadrian’s Wall is probably the most notable feature; built in Roman times.

in County Durham. At the heart of this county lies Durham City; small enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site. Much of the West of the County, including Teesdale, Weardale and the Derwent Valley, is included in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is perfect country for walking, cycling, riding, wildlife-watching and exploring the many charming villages and towns.

The area suffered severely during the border wars between England and Scotland. The legacy of the Border wars of the 14th-16th centuries have resulted in Northumberland having more castles to explore than any other English county.

Tyne & Wear is an area with bustling towns and cities; encompassing Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. The diversity of the area and rich warmth of the people make for a fusion of attractions and appeal.

From the North Pennines in the West to the North Sea Coast in the East, there are attractions and delights to suit all tastes

Newcastle can boast three large shopping centres, many fascinating museums as well as cinemas, theatres presenting a vast

range of entertainment, sport and leisure centres, art-centres and a rich variety of clubs, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops catering for all tastes, pubs and bars all selling the local brew Newcastle Brown Ale and everything else you could could wish for. Teeside is an area now more familiarly known as the Tees Valley; stretching the salmon rich reaches of the upper Tees to the coastal beauty and character laden sea ports. The maritime history and industrial heritage are very much in evidence throughout this area. Teesside offers the opportunity for a country ramble over an endless expanse of moorland, the thrill of sandy beaches and towering cliffs as well as the pleasure of a successful days shopping and fine dining at a chic urban restaurant. From quaint fishing ports, beautiful countryside and cosmopolitan city life, this area has it all.

The course has some of the best fairways you could wish to play from, with the rough, tough enough to punish a wayward shot without losing your ball. The greens are fine and true, together with the 7th hole, which has figured in many a magazine. It is a beautiful parkland

Hartlepool Golf Club is situated on the North East Coast of England within sight and sound of the sea. Hartlepool hosted the Tall Ships Race during 2010. Hartlepool has easy access from A1 via A19. From spring to autumn the course is ablaze with the colour of wild flowers. The area is well known to botanists and has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the Nature Conservancy Council. The course offers a challenge to the experienced player as well as the novice. The wind frequently blows, changing its nature from day to day. Hartlepool is also unique for its

year-round availability as it is seldom closed because of the sandy nature of the soil. The course, which runs along the coast, has been designed to take advantage of the many natural features. The seaward side is protected by hillocks and dunes covered with marram grass. James Braid designed some of the holes, the most spectacular being the tenth which requires a straight drive and a good second shot between dunes. The course measures 6298 yards from the back tees and has a par of 70. Par for Ladies is 72, on a course which measures 5562 yards.

Hexham Golf Club is approx. half a mile on the left. “As fine an inland course as you can find.” The words of Harry Vardon, designer of the original course, are as true today as they were in 1907 when he wrote them to the committee. The Spital course has a magnificent setting on the south bank of the Tyne, and makes full use of the rolling contours and thousands of mature trees to provide a course that is challenging enough to be a regular host of County and Regional events, both amateur and professional, and yet at 6,300 yards it is also enjoyable for the handicap golfer. The greens are regularly amongst the best in the County, and the views over the surrounding

Northumberland countryside are stunning. With its perfect setting, spectacular Georgian Grade One listed Clubhouse, and mouthwatering menus, Hexham Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the best venues in the region for corporate and society golf with many visitors returning year after year to enjoy the excellent facilities and warm welcome. Signature Hole: 18th, Par 4, 344 yards This magnificent closing hole requires a tough decision. Do you risk trying to drive the green or play safe? An accurate tee shot is needed, avoiding the out of bounds, with a large, heavily bunkered green as your final challenge.

LONGHIRST HALL

106

Longhirst Hall Longhirst golf, known for having a beautiful relaxed setting, has an alluring layout with nice country views and undulating greens that add character to the golf courses.

Scenic lakes, elevated tees and well placed bunkers provide interesting features that contribute to its excitement. Course conditions are known for being some of the best in Northumberland. Longhirst Hall Golf Course was opened in June 1997. This layout now plays as The Old Course, with full spec winter greens if required. It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. The Dawson Course is a more relaxing round of golf but can still give a bite if you’re not on your game. Wider fairways and large greens are more forgiving. RAMSIDE

108

Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club Ramside is a golf resort and spa with 36 holes of championship standard golf set in lush, rolling countryside on the doorstep of Durham City.

Look South from its manicured fairways and greens and your eyes will find one of Britain’s greatest buildings, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Durham Cathedral and Castle, built by the Normans in 1093. Whilst the cobbled streets, medieval buildings and Durham’s revered University are centuries old, Ramside Golf Club only turned 20 in 2016. Recent years have seen investment totalling £16m and the resort is now in the best shape of its life.

Golf Ramside has a superb location, close to the A1M heading North to Newcastle and beyond to Scotland. It enjoys excellent connectivity by road and rail for those golfers living within the North East and Yorkshire. Golf at Ramside is a thrilling blend of risk and reward with vast lakes, dramatic doglegs, sweeping fairways, expansive bunkering and some of the largest and truest greens you’ll ever putt on. The two courses are parkland, the oldest - The Prince Bishops’ – set in a leafy valley around the main estate, four star country house hotel and luxury spa and health club. Opened in 1996, The Prince Bishops’ Course has 16 man-made lakes dotted across a par-72 layout beautifully balanced between tricky short holes, reachable par fives and strong par-fours. Doglegs are par for the course and it helps if you can move the ball both ways off the tee and hit high soft-landing approach shots. The second, The Cathedral, opened in 2014 and is laid out on former farmland between quaint villages, snaking through a wooded valley and alongside a rolling beck.

The course begins in the original Ramside estate but then crosses to a broad hilltop plateau, with views over Durham City, before dropping down into a picturesque wooded valley and returning to the clubhouse. The middle ‘hilltop holes’ are spectacular. You’ll enjoy wide-open skies and 360 views of the Durham countryside. These holes are exposed to the elements and a prevailing South Easterly wind gives the greens a links-like look and feel. They sit proudly, elevated as if part of the horizon, and are protected by the clever run-offs, swales and false fronts more often found in seaside golf. The ‘valley holes,’ from four through seven are peaceful and quiet. Here, two beautiful par-three’s interchange with a pair of muscular par-fives, defended by well-placed fairway and greenside bunkers. Later, the course returns to the valley for its most celebrated section. Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner,’ and credits the famous Georgia golf course as his inspiration in shaping the holes. The downhill par-three 12th is clearly a nod to Augusta’s iconic ‘Golden Bell’ but instead of

Rae’s Creek, Sherburn Beck guards the front of the green. The beck is the defining feature at the par-four 13th and skirts the entire length of the hole just like Rae’s Creek does in Augusta at its par-five 13th. The Cathedral’s finishing stretch combines two gentle par-four holes with a fiendishly difficult 452-yard 17th hole. The route to the hole is punctuated by several lakes, fairway bunkers, encroaching trees and a difficult green. The 18th is a long par three played over a waiting lake before you reach the safety of a huge undulating green. Off Course: Relax and revive at The Spa at Ramside Golfers staying at Ramside Hall Hotel will love the opportunity to relax and unwind after golf at the new luxury health club, gym, spa and pool which opened in 2015. Designed by Hawtree, Rockliffe golf course is one of the longest in Europe at 7,879 yards from the back tees. While the course will give even the best professional tour golfer a stern test, most will find the five individual tee boxes on each hole a welcome addition, offering players of all abilities the chance to experience the challenge of Rockliffe Golf. Seven lakes, eight reed beds and thousands of new and mature trees have been added to an already scenic course and the A4 creeping bent grass greens have a slickness to them which sadly offer no excuses for missed putts. Aside from the quality of this 18 hole championship course, the extra facilities play an important role in your Rockliffe Golf experience. This North East club boasts a

fully stocked Pro Shop with brands such as Titleist, Ping, Under Armour and J Lindeberg. There are also extensive practice facilities, a covered 7 bay driving range, a luxurious yet relaxed clubhouse with attached restaurant, members’ area and private dining room. SLALEY HALL

112

Slaley Hall Country Club Slaley Hall is an Edwardian mansion set in 1,000 acres of Northumberland countryside perfect for an idyllic short break, magical wedding venue or place for business.

The two courses at Slaley Hall, the Hunting and the Priestman, are rightly ranked among the very best in our region. Set in more than 1,000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest, the championship golf courses are stern tests – the Hunting Course has hosted European, European Seniors, EuroPro Tour and PGA events. The Hunting requires great ability to play anywhere near to your handicap; the front nine is among the toughest stretches in the country, requiring long and straight tee shots, accurate approaches and an excellent putting stroke. The ninth, often switched to the 18th for major events, is widely regarded as one of the toughest par fours you will find in the region. Designed by Dave Thomas, the lush sweeping fairways, rolling moorland, streams and lakes, towering trees and banks of rhododendrons combine to provide an air of peace and tranquillity and a golfing experience you’ll never forget.

Our Dr Alister MacKenzie designed course is a stunning county championship venue, oozing natural charm as it winds between gorse, heather and bracken around an enticing heathland layout. Each hole presents a different challenge and golfers who like putting on large and Augusta National style greens will enjoy negotiating their undulating surfaces. This is the trademark of a genius whose portfolio also included Augusta, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. No wonder the name Alister MacKenzie is forever enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Andrew Mair, a course designer of 45 years’ experience and a keen student of MacKenzie’s work, suggests South

Moor is a fine example of MacKenzie at his best, saying: “South Moor is proof that the ideal course designer needs the soul of an artist, the brain of an engineer and the heart of a golfer. Each hole is individually designed and not only are there are no replicas, but also what you get here you can’t get anywhere else. You never see any MacKenzie green repeated anywhere. Every green he ever created is different yet a lot of modern course architects roll out a template. So their fourth hole on one course might be a ninth hole somewhere else.” The club motto at South Moor, nil nisi optimum, is appropriate. Translated from the Latin, it means “nothing but the best”.

2016 will prove to be another landmark year for Whickham Golf Club. The new Hollinside Park course layout and new Sport England Academy Practice Facilities opening later this year. The Club has continued to flourish and has reinvested substantially to develop its course with a redevelopment plan that has transformed the original par 68 into a challenging par 71 layout. The original 3rd and 4th (Quarry) holes have been blended to create a demanding par 5, 3rd hole. A new 4th hole is a par 4 dogleg which rises gently up Bird Hill to a green that features spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The new par 3, 5th is a testing 200 yards to the original but reshaped 5th green. The 16th hole was remodeled and brought into play last season and features

5 new bunkers. This original par 4 is now designated, a par 5, you will do well to avoid the bunkers. The Club’s practice facilities are experiencing a serious make over thanks to a successful Inspired Facilities award from SportEngland. Planning approval has been received and work is about to begin on a covered, three bay driving range and an indoor teaching suite equipped with the latest GC2 simulator. There will also be a first class short game practice area alongside the existing practice putting green. COSTA DEL SOL

Sunset Beach Club Hotel The Perfect Choice for Your Next Golf Holiday If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a keen golfer enjoying a well-earned break on the Costa del Sol. You’ll undoubtedly be aware of the wide choice of accommodation available in this beautiful part of Spain; however, it’s not easy to find a hotel that covers all your needs.

The hotel’s Panorama bar is a favourite with golfers. Located on the 6th floor of the hotel and boasting spectacular sea views, it offers a daily happy hour and live sports on large flat screen TV’s; you really don’t need to leave the hotel. Groups and societies are also welcome with the hotel offering a wide range of catering options including welcome drinks parties, gala dinners and the use of the private function room for prize giving ceremonies.

You will certainly want somewhere that’s easily accessible to golf courses, near bars, restaurants, and local night life - and that offers comfortable, value-for-money accommodation. With these basic requirements, you will find quite a long list of options, but Golf Guide are delighted to highlight one of our favourite Costa del Sol hotels – Sunset Beach Club - that really stands out from the crowd, in terms of services provided, facilities on offer and value for money in the golf season. This emblematic 4 star hotel enjoys a fantastic seafront location and boasts extensive services and facilities to cover your every need. Málaga airport is just a short 20 minute drive and you can get to many of the Coast’s most popular golf courses such as Torrequebrada, Mijas Golf, Santana, Parador, and La Cala Golf Resort in under half an hour.

As well as a convenient location, Sunset Beach Club has an outdoor pool and sunbathing area open all year round, an on-site supermarket open every day, daily Happy Hour in the Panorama Bar, pool tables, gym (fee applies), and plenty of other details to make your stay enjoyable and as hassle-free as possible – 24 hour reception & security, printer and computer for on-line check-in, luggage weighing scales, and English-speaking staff, to name just a few. From the moment you decide to plan your golf holiday, a quick call or email to the hotel’s dedicated golf desk detailing your requirements is all you need. Their friendly staff will take care of your accommodation, golf tee time bookings at discounted rates, car hire, transfers from the airport and to the golf courses and even golf club hire, if you don’t fancy lugging your bag through the airport.

Sunset Beach Club offers apartment-style accommodation which makes it perfect for two golfers sharing. The standard 1 bedroom apartments have a separate bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room and there is plenty of space to store golf bags in the large wardrobes. For a small added fee you can upgrade to one of their Prime Sea View or Deluxe Junior Suite apartments which have guaranteed sea views, large 42 inch TV’s and other little extras you won’t find in the standard apartments. If you hire a car, the hotel offers covered and outdoor parking facilities and if you stay between November and January you can take advantage of special offers with discounts of up to 50% for garage parking. The apartments-style rooms all have their own fully equipped kitchenette so that you can prepare your own food (or at least keep your drinks cold or make a cup of tea!); however,

COSTA DEL SOL

the Oasis Restaurant on the first floor tends to be the favoured option amongst golfers. Every morning they serve an amazing full buffet breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, black pudding, hash browns, fruit… the works! If you’ve got an early tee-time and can’t make it to breakfast, the restaurant can prepare a breakfast picnic for you to take away. If you feel like wandering out for a drink, meal or night on the town, there are bars and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Benalmádena’s popular night spots of 24 hour square and the Marina are about a 5-minute taxi ride and Fuengirola is about 1015 minutes away. Sunset Beach Club is open all year round and whilst prices are very reasonable throughout the year, golfers will get the best-value packages by visiting in December or January. For a tailor-made quote for your next golf holiday, simply contact Annemie or Susana by email golf@sunsetbeachclub.com , phone (34 952 579400 Ext. 7822), or by completing the online form in the Golf section of the hotel website. If you’re interested in the accommodation only, or would like to find out more about the hotel’s facilities in general, you will find all the information you need, and can book directly online at www.sunsetbeachclub.com.

COSTA DEL SOL

Parador de Málaga Golf By far the oldest course on the Coast and inaugurated by the Spanish Royal Family in 1925. Now consisting of 27 holes, the original 18 holes were designed by To`m Simpson, of Muirhead and Turnberry fame. An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and parkland, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read

greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The ninth is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions of the course has been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a five minute drive from the 18th hole (or 19th hut) to Malaga Airport.

Alhaurin Golf Resort

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol. Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping

green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. It is located in Alhaurin el Grande, just above Fuengirola and mid way between Malaga and Marbella. The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.

Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dog-leg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.
