Welcome to The Golf Guide Welcome to our latest edition of the Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide - a leading golf and lifestyle publication distributed across the UK and Europe - you can also find an online copy at www.thegolfguide.co.uk. We provide our readers with a top quality printed lifestyle magazine and website. The Golf Guide is aimed at players of all levels, ranging from professionals to your casual society golfer. In addition to this publication, we have further Golf Guides in The North West, Wales, The Midlands and Spain. This Yorkshire & NE Golf Guide is split into 5 areas - The North East of England and the four regions of Yorkshire. At the start of each region you will find a map highlighting where each featured course can be found and a comprehensive listing of all the golf courses at the end of the regions section. The Golf Guide is an opportunity for golf clubs to feature their course, products and services they provide. The aim of the magazine is to give enough information for any golfer or party planning a visit to the area to select courses they wish to play. Each golf course page provides images and details about the course, full contact details and any special offers. Our 2019 Golf Guide Tour is now in its 8th season, with 20 pairs of golfers experiencing the Golf Finals in Spain and 2 pairs enjoying a trip to Fancourt, South Africa sponsored by Chaka Travel. The Golf Guide Tour aims to offer some of the best courses at great prices, and 2019 is certainly on track with Open Qualifiers, Ryder Cup Venues and a trip to the home of golf - St Andrews. The tour has events in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales! In addition to all the superb prizes you can win at each event courtesy

of our sponsors - Callaway, Club Individual, Halewood wines and spirits and many more The Race to Fancourt order of merit competition continues whereby one lucky pair will qualify for 7 days with 5 rounds of golf at the amazing resort of Fancourt, South Africa. The individual tour events are a stableford pairs competition, with each winning pair on the day qualifying for our European final in either November 2019 or February 2020 in the Costa del Sol, including flights, accommodation and 3 rounds of competitive golf at top quality Spanish courses. To qualify for the Race to Fancourt each pair must play in a minimum of 4 tour events. The four round stableford points total will be entered onto an order of merit. The leading 10 pairs at the end of the Notts Hillinwell event will qualify for a UK final where the winning pair on the day will win the top prize and be on the plane to Fancourt, South Africa. As a business, our products and services continue to develop at a rapid rate. Our digital platform provides an interactive web platform that complements the magazine and allow readers to access our information from anywhere in the world, and book their visits online via the Golf Guide. From now on, whether you are reading this in printed format or online, the best golf directory in the UK is never far away. FEATURED COURSE

Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club

Ramside is a golf resort and spa with 36 holes of championship standard golf set in lush, rolling countryside on the doorstep of Durham City. Look South from its manicured fairways and greens and your eyes will find one of Britain’s greatest buildings, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Durham Cathedral and Castle, built by the Normans in 1093. Whilst the cobbled streets, medieval buildings and Durham’s revered University are centuries old, Ramside Golf Club celebrated its 21st birthday in 2017. Recent years have seen investment totalling £16m and the resort is now in the best shape of its life. Golf Ramside has a superb location, close to the A1M heading North to Newcastle and beyond to Scotland. It enjoys excellent connectivity by rail, road and air for those golfers living within the North East and Yorkshire.

Golf at Ramside is a thrilling blend of risk and reward with large lakes, dramatic doglegs, sweeping fairways, expansive bunkering and some of the biggest and truest greens you’ll ever putt on. The two courses are parkland, the oldest - The Prince Bishops’ – set in a leafy valley around the main estate, four star country house hotel and luxury spa and health club. Opened in 1996, The Prince Bishops’ Course has 16 man-made lakes dotted across a par-72 layout beautifully balanced between tricky short holes, reachable par fives and strong par-fours. Doglegs are par for the course and it helps if you can move the ball both ways off the tee and hit high soft-landing approach shots. The second, The Cathedral, opened in 2014 and

is laid out on former farmland between quaint villages, through a wooded valley and alongside a rolling beck. Amen for the Cathedral Course The course begins in the original Ramside estate but them crosses to a broad hilltop plateau, with views over Durham City, before dropping down into a picturesque wooded valley and returning to the clubhouse. The middle ‘hilltop holes’ are spectacular. You’ll enjoy wide-open skies and 360 views of the Durham countryside. These holes are exposed to the elements and a prevailing South Easterly wind gives the greens a links-like look and feel. They sit proudly, elevated as if part of the horizon, and are protected by the clever run-offs, swales and false fronts more often found in seaside golf.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

The downhill par-three 12th is clearly a nod to Augusta’s iconic ‘Golden Bell’ but instead of Rae’s Creek, Sherburn Beck guards the front of the green. The beck is the defining feature at the par-four 13th and skirts the entire length of the hole just like Rae’s Creek does at the par-five 13th in Georgia. The Cathedral’s finishing stretch combines two gentle par-four holes with a fiendishly difficult 452-yard 17th hole. The route to the hole is punctuated by several lakes, fairway bunkers, encroaching trees and a difficult green. The 18th is a long par three played over a waiting lake before you reach the safety of a huge undulating green.

The ‘valley holes,’ from four through seven are peaceful and quiet. Here, two beautiful par-three’s interchange with a pair of muscular par-fives, defended by well-placed fairway and greenside bunkers. Later, the course returns to the valley for its most celebrated section. Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner,’ and credits the famous Georgia golf course as his inspiration in shaping the holes.

Off Course: Recharge at The Spa at Ramside Golfers staying at Ramside Hall Hotel will love the opportunity to relax and unwind after golf at its luxury health club, gym, spa and pool. The Spa at Ramside features a 25m swimming pool, hydrotherapy pools, caldarium, infinity

pool, plunge pool, Rasul mud chamber, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi’s. There are also 12 treatment rooms, a state-of-the art gym, exercise studios, beauty salon and an Asian Fusion restaurant, café and bar. Golfers can stay on the Whole in One golf & spa package or purchase individual treatments designed specifically with the golfer in mind. The Golfer’s Tonic is a restorative massage treatment targeting the back, shoulders, legs and ankles and is the perfect way to restore your body to health after a day walking the fairways. Groups of golfers may also wish to stay in The Ramside Farmhouse, a five-bedroom farmhouse with private walled gardens, veranda and barbecue area located in the heart of The Prince Bishops Course. NEWS & FEATURES

Whitley Bay Golf Club Whitley Bay Golf Club is considered one of the best courses in the North East of England and provides a challenge to all standards of player.

The club was originally founded in 1890 and initially started out on a 2 mile strip of land along the seafront links, eventually moving to its current location in the early 1900’s. An exhibition match between Harry Vardon and Ted Ray was held on the 2nd July 1913 to celebrate the opening, whilst a European Tour event was held in 1977, featuring players such as Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Greg Norman. Today the course has undergone many changes since that period and more recently holes 6 to 10 have been completely redesigned to bring them in line with the quality layout that the remainder of the course enjoys. Video coverage of the course can be found on the clubs website.

The course layout features many aspects that you may expect of a course near the sea - rolling and undulating fairways, elevation changes, gorse and firm consistent greens throughout the year, whilst a dene runs through the course and is a feature on many of the holes. Views from various locations on the course are truly spectacular, whether taking in the course architecture, design and conditioning, looking out to sea beyond St Mary’s Lighthouse or enjoying the wildlife. The ecology of our golf course is very important and this has been recognised by finishing runners up two years running at the Golf Environment Awards in the category of Environmental Golf Course of the Year.

The club is also one of a few in the North East to have an Indoor Golf Studio, which has 3 practice bays with one offering Foresight GC2, which allows golfers to practice the various aspects of their games or play some of the best courses in the world, from Turnberry to The Belfry to Troon to name a few. This is a great facility for those both experienced and new to the game with lessons being able to be booked with our PGA Professional David Twizell. The clubhouse is an excellent place to enjoy a drink or meal for both the club member or visitor and is open from 11am every day. We are hosting a number of open competitions during the 2019 season and these are an excellent way to experience the enhanced course layout and conditioning.

Whitley Bay Golf Club is a great choice for visiting parties or corporate days due to the excellent course and facilities and whether you wish to play the course, visit the clubhouse or experience a new course in the Indoor Golf Studio, everyone is very welcome. High Five! Slaley Hall Wins Again In Leading Travel Awards Slaley Hall has been voted ‘best golf hotel/resort in the north of England’ in the 2019 Today’s Golfer Travel Awards … for an unprecedented fifth successive year! The multi-award-winning venue in Hexham managed by RBH, the UK’s leading independent hotel management company - topped the readers’ poll in the UK’s best-selling golf magazine for the fifth year in a row, as it saw off the challenge of a number of other top northern venues. What’s more, its Hunting course also recorded a podium finish, being hailed as the one of the best golf courses in the north of England. And golfers may enjoy these award-winning facilities for themselves in 2019, with a two-night dinner, bed-and-breakfast break including golf on both the resort’s outstanding courses - from just £159 per person. Andrew Fox, Slaley Hall’s general manager, said: “We thought last year’s achievement of four in a row was outstanding. But what an honour it is for the golfers of the UK to hail Slaley Hall as the best resort in the north for five years on the bounce.

“These are our guests voting for us - the people who part with their hard-earned money to stay and play our courses. And, yet again, I must pay tribute to our staff here, who all work incredibly hard to maintain - and exceed - the high standards required to achieve this sort of status. Thank you also to everybody who voted for us. We look forward to seeing you all again at Slaley Hall this year.” Slaley Hall is set in 1,000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest. It is a magnificent four-star hotel in an elegant Edwardian mansion, with two challenging championship courses - the Hunting and the Priestman - which have played host to no fewer than 18 European Tour and European Senior Tour - now the Staysure Tour - events. The 7,000-yard, par-72 Hunting, designed by Dave Thomas, has lush sweeping fairways, streams, lakes, towering trees and banks of rhododendrons - but, aesthetics aside, it will

catch out the unwary. Well-placed bunkers and tricky greens make this USGA standard course a real challenge. The quality of Slaley Hall’s elder layout is illustrated by the fact the course is often dubbed ‘The Augusta of the North’. The Priestman course was designed by Neil Coles and opened in 1999. Beautifully maintained, the course has matured magnificently. It sits on the west side of the estate, with panoramic views of the Tyne Valley and some daunting water features, and wind can be a factor on a course which hosts regularly European seniors’ events. As the largest golf resort operator in the UK, RBH manages eight championship and tournament golf courses across the UK, hosting events from the European Tour, European Seniors Tour, Ladies European Tour and the PGA. www.qhotels.co.uk/our-locations/slaley-hall

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

North Yorkshire Introduction

North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is England’s largest county with an area of more than 800,000 hectares to explore. The county is fascinating, and no matter what your interest or time to spare, offers a huge range of activities and attractions. The county of North Yorkshire stretches across Northern England from its spectacular coastline in the East, across Moors and fertile valleys to the Dales in the West, and attracts millions of tourists who flock to see its traditional market towns, beautiful countryside and historic sites. The county’s greatest asset is its wonderful scenery, whether it is the NorthYork Moors, to be enjoyed on foot, by car or steam railway or the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales. Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people’s living rooms across the world by the success of television series such as the stories of James Herriot and the

Heartbeat adventures.
Along the 45 miles of coastline there are the traditional resorts of Scarborough and Filey and Whitby. The ruins of monasteries scatter the county at places such as Rievaulx, Jervaulx and Fountains Abbey - a World Heritage site.

The Harrogate District is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, flourishing towns, villages and heritage sites. Harrogate has a rich spa history, combined with parks, gardens and floral displays.
Close by is the medieval market town of Knaresborough, famous for its 14th Century ruined castle and Mother Shiptons Cave. There are also spectacular memories of bygone days in North Yorkshire with magnificent structures which have stood for centuries. Selby Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are two of the finest examples of English architecture to be found anywhere in the world.
North Yorkshire is indeed a land of diversity.

Aldwark Manor was commissioned in 1865 by Lord Walsingham as a wedding present for his eldest daughter. The original Manor forms the basis of what is now the Aldwark Manor Golf & Spa Hotel which sits in the picturesque Vale of York surrounded by the Aldwark Manor Golf Course. The course is suitable for all abilities and it’s essential you keep to the fairways to get around this tight course. There are many interesting features including mature trees, water hazards and of course the River Ure which serve to provide some unique and challenging holes.

The early holes, set in the hotel grounds, are relatively short but they are tight. Holes 5 to 13 are reached by crossing the River Ure and whilst there is a little more room on this side of the river the need for accuracy is maintained by clever use of natural features such as the river and a beck. Holes 14 to 18 are reached by crossing back over the river and provide a very varied and challenging finish to a round. In short, it’s a lovely place to play golf!

Nestling in the Vale of Pickering, east of York and a few miles from the coastal resort of Scarborough, a day at Ganton is a day to remember. Golf was first played at Ganton in the summer of 1891 on a course laid out by Tom Chisholm of St Andrews who had assistance from Robert Bird, the Club’s first professional and head greenkeeper. The site chosen then formed part of Sir Charles Legard’s Ganton Estate and was very rough ground, covered with whins and many varieties of grasses and wild flowers. Thousands of years previously this area had been submerged as part of an inlet from the North Sea, and the natural sandy subsoil was an ideal place to develop a golf course. Distance from Scarborough was eleven miles by road, but development was more influenced by the North Eastern Railway Line with Ganton Halt being ¼ mile from the Clubhouse. The proximity of a railway was often a factor in the development of golf courses in the 19th Century, particularly so in Ganton’s case as the membership extended to those living in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Ganton was soon established as a course where history was to be made. In 1896 Harry Vardon came as professional and it was during his stay (to 1903) that he won the first three of his six Open Championships, and it was to Ganton that he brought back the U.S. Championship Trophy in 1900. Ganton has hosted a succession of major amateur and professional tournaments for men and women. In 1964 the Amateur Championship was played with Michael Lunt just failing to defend from the previous year, losing to Gordon Clark in the final at the 39th. In staging the Amateur Championship again in 1977 (Peter McEvoy, the 1999 and 2001 Walker Cup Captain, was the winner) and 1991 (the winner was Gary Wolstenholme) Ganton remains the only inland course to have held the competition. Indeed Gary Player once said of Ganton that it is the only inland course worthy of holding the Open Championship. Ganton is proud to have been so closely linked with the story of British golf. Deep and prolific bunkers, savage rough and impenetrable gorse have made for a searching examination of the game’s best players.

How to Find

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Approaching Kirkbymoorside from Thirsk on the A170, turn left at the roundabout into the town (if approaching from Pickering turn right). Follow the main street until you reach a mini roundabout at the top of the town. Turn left, and then take the first turning right (brown sign to golf course) about 150 yards down the road. Follow the road (Manor Vale) through the wood until you reach the Golf Club car park.

Kirkbymoorside Golf Club offers a challenging golf course set in a beautiful, quiet, rural surrounding on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

to test your golf on a gem of a course in the peace and tranquillity of superb countryside then you can do no better than enjoy the hospitality offered at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club.

Whatever the time of year, you will be impressed with the spectacular scenery and the peace and quiet which will surround you during the whole of your round. The view over the moors from the 13th tee is unsurpassed in the whole of the North of England. Looking away from the moors, the course offers distant views of the Yorkshire Wolds and The Hambleton Hill – both areas of outstanding natural beauty. If you want

Signature Holes Like all courses, Kirkbymoorside has its signature holes. Whatever your handicap the ‘right to left’ drive from the 7th tee will provide a true test to those seeking par and the 10th is not named the ‘widow maker’ for nothing. It’s a tough drive on the par four 13th, but the view from the tee out to the moors past the village of Gillamoor, makes even the poorest tee shot (almost) forgettable.

Turn right into Hawksworth Lane for 1 mile.

Celebrating its 125 anniversary The Bradford Golf Club has been a Herbert Fowler masterpiece since 1923, but traces its historical roots much farther back in time to 1891. The last two years have seen the club embark on a thoughtful re-discovery of its Fowler heritage, with the aim of realigning holes to offer an enjoyable round of golf for the mid to high handicap golfer and a more challenging golf course for the low handicap golfer, with the 17th described as iconic. Set in 6,3000 yards, with stunning views over Baildon and Rombald Moors.

The course runs in two loops with the 10th and 18th holes finishing outside the clubhouse. The once tree-lined fairways are now more open and natural, fast greens with subtle borrows are a true test for any golfer. The course continues to be used for prestigious Yorkshire Championships and is the home of The Hawksworth Trophy, a 36-hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers in Northern England. The Clubhouse now fully renovated, it is a great place for food, drinks and society golf days.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.

It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

After playing why not visit our Clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality. It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.

How to Find

HEADINGLEY

Just off the A660 between Adel and Alwoodley on the northern edge of Leeds.

Facilities Founded in 1892, Headingley is the oldest golf club in Leeds and is set on the edge of the beautiful suburb of Adel, 15 minutes from the city centre. The course was laid out and shaped in the early 20th century by a number of world-renowned architects including Dr Alister MacKenzie and Harry S. Colt. In a rural setting, the course enjoys many wonderful views and an array of memorable holes that make full use of the varied and dramatic terrain. The par-4 third hole is challenging with trees aligning the fairway and strategically placed bunkers to catch out a wayward drive on the right. While the signature par-3 17th is great

on the eye and offers an opportunity for a hole-in-one as the green feeds the ball towards the hole. Beware though, it can also be a card wrecker as it is guarded by an army of bunkers and heavy rough. Although it is presented in a traditional style, since 2013 the heathland course has been undergoing a comprehensive and ambitious Course Improvement Plan to ensure that it continues to be a venue of choice for discerning golfers. After your round relax in the clubhouse which boasts three bar areas but perhaps more importantly, a warm and friendly atmosphere. The 5 star reviews on TripAdvisor say it all.

The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.

The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

East Yorkshire & Humberside Introduction

East Yorkshire & Humberside

East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. To the west are the Yorkshire Wolds, a chalk formation, and you can explore the rolling hills along the 79 mile long

Yorkshire Wolds Way. To the south-east is the flat coastal plain of Holderness which terminates at the wild Spurn Peninsular East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea. Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a narrow projection of sand and shingle, constantly changing with the tides and a stop over for thousands of migrating birds. Bridlington, with its beautiful beaches and brand new award winning promenades and gardens, offers a host of all weather activities. This famous seaside resort has an irresistible appeal for people of all ages and a special Bridlington welcome that is guaranteed to warm your heart.

“A testing par 68 for the scratch player without being too difficult for the higher handicap.” To which can be added, “An attractive course, with good golfing qualities, which makes it a pleasure to play again and again.” Brough is a thinking man’s course, where accurate positioning of the tee ball is required for good scoring. The good golfing qualities are based on the light, well drained land, which results in a playable course in all weathers.

Signature Hole: Hole 17, Par 3. “Entertaining” is probably a tongue-incheek description of the last of the course’s testing short holes. Here, that stream which comes into play so many times seems to be everywhere and there is a good chance that you will be scooping your ball out of water if your tee shot is at all wayward. Should you miss it with your first, the stream is almost sure to influence your second shot. One of the best if not the best hole on the course.

We’ve hosted numerous competitions including the R&A Boys Home Internationals, British Blind Open and the PGA four-ball Championships 2009 - 2013. So what is it that makes this 10,000 yards of majestic golf course so special? Could it be the magnificent three loops of nine holes that meander through majestic pines? Is it the tree lined fairways that causes a challenge to even a scratch golfer? What about the water hazard at the 7th hole (we’ve fished out 6000 balls in one year!)? It is all of this and more. Don’t just take our word for it, book a golf day or golf break at Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort and see for yourself. And it doesn’t stop there. The pro shop is stocked with the latest names in golfing fashion and of course there is the all-important 19th hole, or in our case the 28th! The Pines Bar is the perfect place to sit with friends on the terrace overlooking the splendour of the golf course, enjoy a cold beer and dissect your round, hole for hole!

Forest Pines is a venue where looks can be deceiving, it’s as challenging as it is beautiful. With straight driving being key to making a score, each tee shot has to be carefully planned and played with absolute precision. A challenge for even the more experienced golfer, the stunning 27 hole golf course twists and turns its way through majestic pines onto lush fairways and excellent undulating greens, with strategically placed water hazards. We have a number of different golf membership categories available at Forest Pines. Whether you’re not yet a member anywhere, are looking to change club or are looking for a second membership - we’ll certainly have a membership to suit your needs! We welcome all ages and abilities to be part of the golf club. Contact our Golf Membership Sales Advisor to find out more. They will be more than happy to take you through the different golf membership options we have available at Forest Pines, which start from just £295!

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

South Yorkshire Introduction

South Yorkshire

You could be forgiven for thinking that all South Yorkshire can offer is an industrial history of mining and steel manufacturing. The main towns within this Yorkshire and Humber county did grow around those industries, themselves having huge educational and historical appeal for visitors but, thanks to multi-million pound investment via government initiatives and Heritage Lottery funding, the whole area is buzzing with regeneration and redevelopment, seeing some of its slightly dusty, historical gems being given a good polish and the chance to shine again.

In addition to firm favourites (Doncaster Railway, Doncaster Racecourse), and those restored to their former glories (Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park Museum, Wentworth Castle), the area is brimming with

new, lively, modern venues offering a variety of entertainment, culture and attractions for more cosmopolitan tourists including: art galleries & exhibitions (Millennium Galleries, Graves Art Gallery), contemporary/ traditional music & theatre (Sheffield City Hall, The Leadmill, The Harley), sporting fixtures (Don Valley Stadium, Hallam FM Arena, The Crucible), and state of the art shopping centres (Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks) - all of which mean this area is now a firm favourite for those visiting ‘up North’. If you enjoy the outdoors, South Yorkshire is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Pennine Yorkshire and the Trans Pennine Trail which cuts right across the region. So there is never a shortage of things to see and do in this abundant area of Yorkshire.

The calibre of this South Yorkshire course is supported by a most impressive list of credentials which span a whole spectrum of iconic golfing greats, such as the great John Jacobs, who was literally brought up on the Club’s premises and twice Captained Europe’s Ryder Cup Team, to Designers Alister Mackenzie, Willie Park Jnr. and even “old” Tom Morris himself, who have each added to the architecture of the course. The Club has hosted the Curtis Cup and numerous Pro Tour events, which include the sensational 1957 Ryder Cup victory for the GB Team led by Dai Rees, and in the present day, has an exciting array of young amateur talent who choose to play and develop on this famous course in the hope of emulating Lindrick’s elite playing members who include a former World Number 1, a US Masters Winner and a current trio of Ryder Cup Players.

has been done sympathetically to maintain character and ambience but also, crucially, to bolster the challenge of this atmospheric course. Off the course the traditional Members’ Club welcome remains, while the changing facilities and our Ryder Cup Suite have been completely rebuilt to accommodate the needs and expectations of the modern golfer. Our staff will do their utmost to ensure that all who visit Lindrick really enjoy a combination of our historic legacy and modern golfing trends, and will want to repeat it regularly in the future.

The Club’s members have invested over £2m in recent enhancements at the Club. Two green to tee tunnels, new strategic fairway bunkers, the remodelling of greenside bunkers and new Championship tees has improved 11 holes in total so far, with more planned. Everything

The Golf Club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent Club House. Surrounded by beautiful timbered parkland the course is easily accessible from the M1 or A1 in South Yorkshire. Also, being closely situated to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster, it is accessible from far afield.

Originally a nine hole course laid out by Sandy Herd, in 1906 it was increased to eighteen holes and was subsequently modified by James Braid. Resulting from this is an exceptionally well laid out course, where golf is played over parkland of great beauty. The course record of 62 was recorded by Simon Coumbe of Pontefract GC during the second round of the inaugural Lee Westwood Trophy held in September 2005. He broke the previous record score of 65, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Ian Garbutt. The golf shop at Rotherham Golf Club prides itself on retail experience and exceptional customer service.

Yorkshire & North East Golf Guide

North East Introduction

North East North East England is one of the nine official regions of England. Covering Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and Teesside. Northumberland is the Northernmost of the English counties, separated from Scotland by the Cheviot Hills and the Tweed River and borders on the North Sea. The terrain is level along the wild, rugged coastline and hilly in the interior, where high moor lands alternate with fertile valleys. Hadrian’s Wall is probably the most notable feature; built in Roman times.

in County Durham. At the heart of this county lies Durham City; small enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site. Much of the West of the County, including Teesdale, Weardale and the Derwent Valley, is included in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is perfect country for walking, cycling, riding, wildlife-watching and exploring the many charming villages and towns.

The area suffered severely during the border wars between England and Scotland. The legacy of the Border wars of the 14th-16th centuries have resulted in Northumberland having more castles to explore than any other English county.

Tyne & Wear is an area with bustling towns and cities; encompassing Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, and Sunderland. The diversity of the area and rich warmth of the people make for a fusion of attractions and appeal.

From the North Pennines in the West to the North Sea Coast in the East, there are attractions and delights to suit all tastes

Newcastle can boast three large shopping centres, many fascinating museums as well as cinemas, theatres presenting a vast

range of entertainment, sport and leisure centres, art-centres and a rich variety of clubs, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops catering for all tastes, pubs and bars all selling the local brew Newcastle Brown Ale and everything else you could could wish for. Teeside is an area now more familiarly known as the Tees Valley; stretching the salmon rich reaches of the upper Tees to the coastal beauty and character laden sea ports. The maritime history and industrial heritage are very much in evidence throughout this area. Teesside offers the opportunity for a country ramble over an endless expanse of moorland, the thrill of sandy beaches and towering cliffs as well as the pleasure of a successful days shopping and fine dining at a chic urban restaurant. From quaint fishing ports, beautiful countryside and cosmopolitan city life, this area has it all.

Bamburgh Castle is one of the most beautiful and entertaining courses in Britain. It is short but tricky, fun but thought-provoking. It starts with two par 3s followed by two par 5s; there are six par 3s in all; the last three holes are a great finish to any round: a birdie is possible for any golfer at all three, but danger is never far away.

Signature Holes Hole 8: The Island. Par 3, 164 yards The short par three 8th hole is a real eye opener. Stunning panoramic views await you on this lofty tee from where you play across a grassy chasm to a small raised green, perched on top of a rocky ledge.

No matter what the weather may throw at you, no matter how well or poorly you may be playing, you will be inspired by your surroundings which include many of Northumberland’s finest landmarks... Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, Budle Bay, the Cheviots and the iconic Bamburgh Castle.

Hole 4: Cheviot Way. Par 5, 485 yards On a clear day there is no finer sight than that of the Cheviots in the distance. To make birdie you must hit a long, accurate second to a narrowing landing area in front of a tricky green. Trouble is never far away in the form of steep drops down to the waters of beautiful Budle Bay.

Brancepeth Castle Golf Club rests on the gentle hills and ravines of Mid-County Durham in the magnificent shadow the castle itself. A Harry Colt classic, Brancepeth Castle is known for its rolling fairways, firm greens, and spectacular views. Established in 1931 Brancepeth Castle Golf Club has long been a benchmark of quality championship golf in the Durham parkland, most recently hosting an England Golf Championship in 2015. It is a stern and treacherous test of golf, with exciting par 3’s and devilish little hollows persistently examining the mental fortitude and short game prowess of those who play. However, it is eternally fair, rewarding those who play with patience and sense with opportunities to score.

The front nine will see you navigate your way through some of the most beautiful parkland terrain in the Northeast, culminating with an infamous 9th. The 9th at Brancepeth is widely regarded as one of the toughest holes in the world, and as such offers sweet reward for those who manage to tame it. From the medal tees Brancepeth measures only 6400 yards, though do not be fooled. Five of the toughest par 3’s in the country loom along with only three very well-protected par 5’s to yield. The beautiful historical clubhouse and bar affords the ultimate atmosphere and the friendliest of welcomes.

HEXHAM

If heading north or south on the A1 take the A69 signposted Hexham and Carlisle for approx. 20 minutes. Go straight on at the main Hexham roundabout to stay on the A69 and after one mile turn left to exit the A69 via the B6531 slip road. Hexham Golf Club is approx. half a mile on the left. If heading north or south on the M6 take the A69 signposted Hexham for approx. 45 minutes. Turn right to exit the A69 via the B6531 slip road at the beginning of the dual carriageway at Hexham. Hexham Golf Club is approx. half a mile on the left. “As fine an inland course as you can find.” The words of Harry Vardon, designer of the original course, are as true today as they were in 1907 when he wrote them to the committee. The Spital course has a magnificent setting on the south bank of the Tyne, and makes full use of the rolling contours and thousands of mature trees to provide a course that is challenging enough to be a regular host of County and Regional events, both amateur and professional, and yet at 6,300 yards it is also enjoyable for the handicap golfer. The greens are regularly amongst the best in the County, and the views over the surrounding

Northumberland countryside are stunning. With its perfect setting, spectacular Georgian Grade One listed Clubhouse, and mouthwatering menus, Hexham Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the best venues in the region for corporate and society golf with many visitors returning year after year to enjoy the excellent facilities and warm welcome. Signature Hole: 18th, Par 4, 344 yards This magnificent closing hole requires a tough decision. Do you risk trying to drive the green or play safe? An accurate tee shot is needed, avoiding the out of bounds, with a large, heavily bunkered green as your final challenge.

LONGHIRST HALL

90

Longhirst Hall Longhirst golf, known for having a beautiful relaxed setting, has an alluring layout with nice country views and undulating greens that add character to the golf courses.

Scenic lakes, elevated tees and well placed bunkers provide interesting features that contribute to its excitement. Course conditions are known for being some of the best in Northumberland. Longhirst Hall Golf Course was opened in June 1997. This layout now plays as The Old Course, with full spec winter greens if required. It has been skilfully modelled to provide some of the most stunning holes in the country. On the fascinating 17th, for example, you drive downhill past two lakes before aiming for a narrow green flanked by a pond on either side. The Lakes Course is a true test of accuracy. Tight fairways and an abundance of water make it a test for even the best golfers. A thoughtful progression around the course is required. The par 3, 6th and the par 4, 17th are truly stunning holes that have to be played to be believed. The Dawson Course is a more relaxing round of golf but can still give a bite if you’re not on your game. Wider fairways and large greens are more forgiving. Lakes and water feature in abundance again.

RAMSIDE HALL

92

Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club Ramside is a golf resort and spa with 36 holes of championship standard golf set in lush, rolling countryside on the doorstep of Durham City.

The second, The Cathedral, opened in 2014 and is laid out on former farmland between quaint villages, through a wooded valley and alongside a rolling beck.

Off Course: Recharge at The Spa at Ramside Golfers staying at Ramside Hall Hotel will love the opportunity to relax and unwind after golf at its luxury health club, gym, spa and pool. SLALEY HALL

96

Slaley Hall Country Club Slaley Hall is an Edwardian mansion set in 1,000 acres of Northumberland countryside perfect for an idyllic short break, magical wedding venue or place for business.

The two courses at Slaley Hall, the Hunting and the Priestman, are rightly ranked among the very best in our region. Set in more than 1,000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest, the championship golf courses are stern tests – the Hunting Course has hosted European, European Seniors, EuroPro Tour and PGA events. The Hunting requires great ability to play anywhere near to your handicap; the front nine is among the toughest stretches in the country, requiring long and straight tee shots, accurate approaches and an excellent putting stroke. The ninth, often switched to the 18th for major events, is widely regarded as one of the toughest par fours you will find in the region. Designed by Dave Thomas, the lush sweeping fairways, rolling moorland, streams and lakes, towering trees and banks of rhododendrons combine to provide an air of peace and tranquillity and a golfing experience you’ll never forget.

SOUTH MOOR

Via the A1 motorway, use Junction 63 to Chester-le-Street and Stanley and take the 1st exit at roundabout. At next roundabout, take the 2nd exit signposted B6313 to Chester-le-Street. Just past Aldi on right, bear right at mini roundabout. Go straight at traffic lights, and continue on B6313 for 4 miles. Turn right at cross roads on to B6532 and Middles Road. You are now less than a mile away from the entrance to South Moor Golf Club which is on your left. Facilities

Our Dr Alister MacKenzie designed course is a stunning county championship venue, oozing natural charm as it winds between gorse, heather and bracken around an enticing heathland layout. Each hole presents a different challenge and golfers who like putting on large and Augusta National style greens will enjoy negotiating their undulating surfaces. This is the trademark of a genius whose portfolio also included Augusta, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. No wonder the name Alister MacKenzie is forever enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Andrew Mair, a course designer of 45 years’ experience and a keen student of MacKenzie’s work, suggests South

Moor is a fine example of MacKenzie at his best, saying: “South Moor is proof that the ideal course designer needs the soul of an artist, the brain of an engineer and the heart of a golfer. Each hole is individually designed and not only are there are no replicas, but also what you get here you can’t get anywhere else. You never see any MacKenzie green repeated anywhere. Every green he ever created is different yet a lot of modern course architects roll out a template. So their fourth hole on one course might be a ninth hole somewhere else.” The club motto at South Moor, nil nisi optimum, is appropriate. Translated from the Latin, it means “nothing but the best”.

Newly refurbished clubhouse, Top-class changing rooms, showers and lockers, CustomFitGolf discount store, State-of-the-art indoor fitting and coaching facility, Alister MacKenzie themed Astroturf short game practice area, Two putting greens - including one with an Astroturf surface, Driving practice area. Tynemouth Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 2013. This year the Ladies section under Ladies Captain Kim McKenna celebrate their centenary. Tynemouth is one of the most attractive and satisfying parkland golf courses in the north east. This par 70, 18 hole course is situated only minutes from the coast close to the historic village of Tynemouth. The course offers a very fair challenge to all levels of golfer and the fact that the course record of 65 is the best any golfer, professional or amateur, has managed so far, suggests the course is not as simple as it first appears.

Memberships Available: Full ladies and Gents, Intermediate, Flexible Playing Scheme, Corporate please contact the Club for details. Benefits of full membership: Full members can enjoy a reciprocal agreement with Stocksfield, Seahouses and Tynemouth and can play these courses at no cost. There is also a partnership agreement with 12 other courses locally where full members can get hugely discounted green fees. Finally Tynemouth is a member of the Braid Association and can play all other members of the society in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales at very preferential rates.

How to Find

TYNESIDE

Seven miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne, off B6317 in Ryton village.

Facilities

Tyneside Golf Club is the oldest inland club in the North East of England; formed in 1879 and still regarded as among the finest parkland courses in the region. It’s not only our history that we are proud of. We boast a challenging though enjoyable 18 hole layout which is renowned for the quality of its greens and which resists the elements remarkably well. Perched on the “Falls” of old Ryton Village, our club is tucked away in peaceful surroundings, a short drive from Newcastle City Centre and Newcastle International Airport. Our somewhat “secret” location has not prevented the club’s reputation spreading far beyond the banks of the River Tyne.

Our course is one of the most highly rated in the North East of England. This is not only because of its layout and condition, but also because it drains so freely and is available for play when other courses have to close. The course also winters remarkably well and we rarely use temporary greens. Hole 13, “The Coffin”, Par 4, 410 yards The signature hole of the course. A good drive to the left half of the fairway leaves a difficult second shot (as the bottom of the flag is not always visible) to the coffin shaped green that is well guarded on the left side by a number of bunkers. A par is an excellent result on this hole.

2016 will prove to be another landmark year for Whickham Golf Club. The new Hollinside Park course layout and new Sport England Academy Practice Facilities opening later this year. The Club has continued to flourish and has reinvested substantially to develop its course with a redevelopment plan that has transformed the original par 68 into a challenging par 71 layout. The original 3rd and 4th (Quarry) holes have been blended to create a demanding par 5, 3rd hole. A new 4th hole is a par 4 dogleg which rises gently up Bird Hill to a green that features spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The new par 3, 5th is a testing 200 yards to the original but reshaped 5th green. The 16th hole was remodeled and brought into play last season and features

5 new bunkers. This original par 4 is now designated, a par 5, you will do well to avoid the bunkers. The Club’s practice facilities are experiencing a serious make over thanks to a successful Inspired Facilities award from SportEngland. Planning approval has been received and work is about to begin on a covered, three bay driving range and an indoor teaching suite equipped with the latest GC2 simulator. There will also be a first class short game practice area alongside the existing practice putting green. The Club has been working to ensure the new Academy Facilities are used to fulfil the commitment we made to SportEngland “to provide first class golf development in our community”.

El Chaparral Golf Club

Enjoying nature in all its glory while playing golf, breathing in the fragrance of the pine trees, listening to the songs of the birds and allowing yourself to be enchanted by the beautiful panoramic views - this is just one of the many attractions of El Chaparral, the Costa del Sol golf club set in the municipality of Mijas, and neighbouring the municipality of Marbella.

The personalised, courteous and professional attention offered by all of our employees is another characteristic which distinguishes El Chaparral. Equally outstanding is its club house, built in the Andalusian style and overlooking the sea, which provides additional services including a restaurant, live music, a golf shop, club repair, a conference room, a beauty parlour and a hairdresser. The club house is elegantly decorated and is equipped with luxury facilities with different atmospheres as well as a spacious terrace with unbeatable views of the golf course and the sea. Spectacular would be the word that best defines the sensation of playing at El Chaparral, which is capable of hosting any kind of top-level event, whether amateur or professional. The course consists of 18 holes set in unique and privileged surroundings on the Costa del Sol. Close to the sea (700 metres from the beach) and surrounded by vast woods of Canary Island pines and native Mediterranean

woodland, El Chaparral offers players what all golfers are searching for: peacefulness. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only course on the Costa del Sol with six par 5’s, six par 4’s and six par 3’s. It is not a very long course (5,800 metres) and it includes a wide variety of holes which can be enjoyed by players of all levels. It is a demanding circuit which requires skill and precision, with greens which provide outstanding conditions throughout the whole year. Its ease of access, at just 700 metres off the N340 highway, places it right at the head of Golf Valley in Mijas, which is a world-famous destination for golfers. El Chaparral has a top-class international golf school with highly qualified PGA professionals, each with their own teaching method, as well as the latest video and computer technology, whether for teaching beginners or for helping advanced players who wish to perfect their swing.

The floodlit driving range is open every day of the year until nine o’clock in the evening. It was designed with all kinds of professionals in mind, who, due to a lack of time, can only enjoy their free time once they have finished work for the day. It has a practice tee made of wood, with two heights and space for 32 players. There is also a 1000-square metre practice green for approach and putt, making this one of the best practice areas in Mijas Costa. El Chaparral has become a benchmark for golf courses on the Costa del Sol thanks to its delightful surroundings, its impeccable facilities, its high quality of service and its good value for money. The academy offers classes for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups of children, and corporative groups.

SIgnature Hole Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, third would be one to mention. Holes thirteen and fifteen are also attractive, with streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea.
