A Warm Welcome to the Yorkshire Golf Guide

Cover Image & Above: Moor Allerton Golf Club Published bi-monthly under licence by: DCR Sports Limited

Welcome to the very first issue of the Yorkshire Golf Guide. This Guide has been designed by golfers for golfers to select and find some of the best golf in the British Isles. The Yorkshire Golf Guide has been brought to you by Golf Guide Publications Ltd, who publish Guides in the UK and the Costa del Sol. This formula has worked for many years in Spain and is proving to be a similar success story in the North West of England, Ireland and now Yorkshire. This bi-monthly Guide contains reviews of Golf Clubs, local and international golf news and special golf promotions. Each issue will have an in-depth Golf Club editorial describing the course, the facilities on offer, signature holes and detailed directions. These editorials are a chance for clubs to highlight themselves and detail any offers and promotions they are running

during that period. We are delighted to have Moor Allerton Golf Club as our first. The Guide is split into four areas; North, West, East and South Yorkshire. These areas are colour coded, containing a map highlighting where each course can be found. A full golf course listing is featured in the Guide containing the address, phone number, email and website of every golf course in Yorkshire. The Golf Guide is aimed at golfers at every level; societies, club golfers, beginners and professionals. We hope that you find this free publication an enjoyable read, and be sure to pass it on to your golfing buddies to help sort your golfing calendar in Yorkshire for 2011 and beyond. The next issue will be out in April, packed with more courses, features, news and tips ready for the new season. Happy golfing from all at the Yorkshire Golf Guide!

A number of major national and international events have been played at the Club with many world class players having competed including Seve Ballesteros, Tom Weiskopf, Tony Jacklin, Gary Player and Greg Norman.

The course would typically stretch between 6470-6841 yards, with SSS of 73-74. By using alternate tees, the course can however be altered between 5940 - 6841 yards.

PGA PRO PROFILE

James Whitaker Believes in success…

From an early age James knew his career would sit within the golf industry and now, at 31, he is a business director, AT class PGA Professional and the Head PGA Professional at the prestigious Leeds course; Moor Allerton Golf Club. James trained as a PGA Professional at the revered Belfy in Birmingham and became the manager of the PGA National Golf Academy. Following this, James moved to De Vere Oulton Hall to manage the Nike Golf Academy. His recent decision to become a club professional is the career move he has been striving towards. ‘It’s a change of perspective, a new way of working and it really is very diverse in its demands’ states Whitaker. James has made his name as one of the top coaches in the area through his unique teaching beliefs and style. ‘No two golfers are the same. One scratch golfer is totally different to the next and similarly, no two high handicappers

play the same game. Coaching has to be tailored to the individual and TrackMan really helps to do this.’ The Trackman performance studio shows the unique differences between every golfer’s swing and assists the expertly trained eye to find faults and fixes for each player. The combination of the coach, the detailed Trackman data and the visual aid of a 300 frame per second camera helps every level of golfer understand their movements at a more complex level. It’s this assessment and ability to develop each individual golfer which has made James a popular choice in the Yorkshire area and for the second consecutive year, he is the coach to the Leeds and District teams; from juniors to men’s A Team.

“The J Whitaker Golf Shop at Moor Allerton Golf Club is a breath of modernity in a traditional members’ club.”

James has recently invested in TrackMan which features a sophisticated Doppler-radar similar to that used in military applications. TrackMan is used by players on the major tours and tells you your club speed, ball speed, carry distance, total distance and how far off-line your ball finished. It is able to measure accurately your angle of attack and swing path, among other very relevant data. You will be able to see a 3D representation of your ball’s trajectory In other words: no more guessing! TrackMan can be used for tuition and custom fitting. James custom fits for Nike, Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Mizuno and Bridgestone. The J Whitaker Golf Shop at Moor Allerton Golf Club is a breath of modernity in a traditional members’ club. It’s a high street shopping experience, with sleek fittings and

the best brands of golf clothing, hardware and accessories. The shop stocks the ‘greats’ of golf retail such as Ping, Titleist, TaylorMade and Callaway, but also offers a more diverse collection than the average Pro Shop. For Spring Summer 2011 you can see J Lindeberg, a new line of FootJoy apparel, Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren to name but a few. The shop has a full range of Galvin Green waterproofs, clothing and accessories for men and ladies and you will be sure to find the staff well trained to advise you on all levels of purchase. Pro Tip Today’s ‘athletic’ starting position encourages maximum freedom of movement and increases club head speed. Having a feeling of readiness in all parts of the body requires the participation of every part of the body – from head to toe. 1. The left side of the chest is fairly even with the ball at set up. Employ this tactic consistently for solidity. 2. There is no forward press, keep the shoulders square and the body weight even. 3. Slightly flare the feet to stop restriction when rotating the hips both going back and coming through.

World Number One Holders of the Top Spot Although the top spot has changed hands 44 times since Bernhard Langer first took the position on April 6, 1986, since the creation of the Official World Golf Ranking (known as the Sony Ranking until 1997) only 13 players in all have held the coveted position of being officially the world’s number one golfer.

Tiger Woods (pictured left) holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one (281, from June 12, 2005 to October 24, 2010), as well as the most total weeks in the position at 623. The thirteen holders, and the total number of weeks at number one, are as follows, as at January 9, 2011: Bernhard Langer Severiano Ballesteros Greg Norman Nick Faldo Ian Woosnam Fred Couples Nick Price Tom Lehman Ernie Els David Duval Vijay Singh Tiger Woods Lee Westwood

3 weeks 61 weeks 331 weeks 97 weeks 50 weeks 16 weeks 44 weeks 1 week 9 weeks 15 weeks 32 weeks 623 weeks 11 weeks

MOST TIMES AS NO. 1 As the top spot has alternated between players over the years, Greg Norman (pictured bottom right) has reached number one 11 separate times, Tiger Woods 10 times, Seve Ballesteros (pictured top right) 5 and Nick Faldo 4, with Ernie Els and Vijay Singh 3 times each. SHORTEST TENURE Although several number ones - including Tiger Woods - have held the position for just one week before being displaced, only Tom Lehman among the twelve has been world number one for a single week in his career, in 1997. YOUNGEST Tiger Woods was 21 years, 5 months and 2 weeks old when he first became world number one on June 15, 1997. OLDEST Vijay Singh was 41 years, 6 months and 2 weeks old when he first became world number one on September 5, 2004, and 42 years, 3 months and 3 weeks old when he last held the position on June 11, 2005. NATIONALITIES Of the twelve number ones, only four have been Americans, the position also having been held by a German, a Spaniard, an Australian, an Englishman, a Welshman, a Zimbabwean, a South African and a Fijian. YEAR LONG HOLDERS Only three players have held the position for at least 52 successive weeks: Greg Norman,

Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. The same three players are also the only ones to been world number one for a full calendar year: Nick Faldo throughout 1993, Greg Norman throughout 1996, and Tiger Woods throughout 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2008, Tiger Woods achieved the remarkable feat of holding onto the number one position all year, despite not competing for more than six months after his June 16 playoff victory for the US Open against Rocco Mediate, as he underwent knee surgery and recuperation. He was still world number one on February 25, 2009, when he resumed tournament golf at the Accenture Match Play Championship. HIGHEST POINTS TOTAL Tiger Woods also holds the record for the highest ever average points total, when he reached 32.44 points (1459.64 points accumulated over 45 tournaments) on June 3, 2001, shortly before the 2001 US Open, at which point he was the first player ever to hold all four professional major championships simultaneously - the so-called ‘Tiger Slam’.

BIGGEST LEAD Just before that, on May 20, 2001, Tiger Woods had also built the biggest ever lead in the rankings, when his 32.33 average points was 19.40 ahead of the then world number two Phil Mickelson on 12.93 average points.

Druh Belts & Buckles Take Golf Market by Storm Druh Belts & Buckles, a unique range of stylish belts and buckles, were only launched just over a year ago by Yorkshireman and former touring pro Simon Hurd but already they have taken the golf market by storm.

Hurdy, as he is known on Tour, has in the past been known for the distinctive and colourful pork pie hats he dons on the golf course, but not for much longer as the overwhelming success of Druh has now placed him firmly on the golf fashion map. The immediate impact of the belts is according to Hurd down to the fact that they offer the discerning golfer an extensive selection of stylish handmade leather and snakeskin belts in sumptuous classic and chic casual styles and can be as outrageous or classical as the wearer wishes. Druh Belts are available in leather and water snakeskin in a variety of colours ranging from funky pastels and eye-catching metallics and in different embossed styles from crocodile to ostrich effect for the more adventurous golfers whilst also catering for the more traditional golfer who prefers his belts in black, white, brown or blue. Druh’s interchangeable buckles

all featuring the signature ‘db’ logo in brushed nickel, polished silver or gold, diamante and enamel mean each belt can be customised to the individual taste of the wearer. “I have always taken an interest in fashion both on and off the golf course, so it seemed a natural sideline for me to go into after I stopped playing golf,” says Hurd, always smart dresser with well-tailored attire. “I have a particular passion for belts and traveling the world, I have always found it difficult to find stylish, good quality belts. So I started designing my own and commissioned a local leather craftsman in Thailand to handmake them. So many friends and fellow golfers liked them that I decided it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start a business out of it. “Golf gear is often perceived as rather staid and dull so I wanted to have a bit of fun designing belts and buckles that were a little

bit funky, yet stylish, and certainly they have been an instant hit with pro golfers all over the world. And now it is the chance for all those amateurs out there to smarten up their golf look with one of my Druh belts!” Before selling his Druh Belts & Buckles, Hurd was a regular on the Asian Tour after playing on The European Tour on and off for the last 10 years. In his last year of full time play in 2007, he was ranked 49th in the Order of Merit and is yet to claim his first win in the Far East.

Druh has also proved a hit with the lady pros, so much so that the brand designed a range of signature flower buckles especially for girls. The new range features a pretty flower motif encrusted with a sparkling diamante ‘db’ set off by a variety of enamel infills in pink, purple, red and yellow as well as the more traditional white and black. Now such characters as flamboyant American Christina Kim, Jimin Kang of South Korea, Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and Becky Brewerton of Wales are all sporting a bit of Druh ‘flower power’ both on and off the course.

A host of European pros such as David Howell, Graeme Storm and Simon Kahn can be seen sporting Druh Belts & Buckles on tour whilst tour champions Robert Karlsson of Sweden, Dane Thomas Bjorn and Ireland’s Paul McGinley all act as brand ambassadors for Druh. World number one Lee Westwood of England has also recently joined the stable of Druh ambassadors that are loving and wearing Druh.

Druh Belts & Buckles make the perfect present for anyone who has an eye for fashion or simply likes looking good. Available through the internet at www. druhbeltsandbuckles.com at £89 for leather and £159 for snakeskin allows golfers to design their own unique belt by choosing their own belt and buckle combination. Pick your team For the European Tour Fantasy Race The new European Tour Fantasy Race has just got underway, but it’s not too late to pick your team for a chance to win a golfing holiday to Dubai.

With its new format and fantastic prizes, the European Tour Fantasy Race promises plenty of excitement every week as your team of 15 look to accumulate as many points as possible. There are weekly, monthly and ultimately end of season prizes to be won, including European Tour merchandise, clubs and balls from Titleist and for the overall winner, the ultimate prize of a golfing holiday to Dubai including two business class flights from any Emirates destination and a five night stay at the Atlantis, the Palm, the official hotel of the Dubai World Championship, and golf at Jumeirah Golf Estate. The aim is still to accumulate as much prize money as possible throughout the season for your team of 15 players but with a few new rules. Entrants to the 2011 European Tour Fantasy Race will need to select a team of 15 players but in 2011 you will be only be permitted to make up to five changes to your team between events. And a big difference is that any money won by “Sold” players while they were in your chosen 15 will still count to your team’s total earnings. Lastly, Team changes can only be made on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This will put emphasis on selecting form players for each week, trying to choose players who are likely to favour particular courses or events, without fear of their earnings dropping out of your team’s tally if you substitute them later in the season. José Maria Olazábal Named as 2012 Ryder Cup Captain José Maria Olazábal has accepted an invitation from the Tournament Committee of The European Tour, ratified by The European Ryder Cup Players and Stakeholders Board, to captain the European team in The 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Illinois, United States of America, from September 28-30, 2012.

Olazábal, who was born in Fuenterrabia, Spain, on February 5, 1966, becomes the 23rd golfer to captain a Ryder Cup team against the United States and the second Spaniard following Seve Ballesteros, the winning captain in 1997 when Europe triumphed 14 ½ - 13 ½ at Club de Golf Valderrama, Sotogrande, Spain. Olazábal made the first of seven Ryder Cup appearances in 1987 when Europe created history by winning on American soil for the first time and he was also on the winning European team in 1997 and 2006 in a Ryder Cup playing career that spanned 19 years. Olazábal and Ballesteros formed the most

successful partnership in Ryder Cup history in the fourballs and foursomes with 11 wins and two halved matches from 15 played, and with 18 wins and 20½ points, Olazábal stands fifth in the European lists for most matches won and most points won respectively.

were achieved under the captaincies of Tony Jacklin (1985, 1987), Bernard Gallacher (1995), Ballesteros (1997), Sam Torrance (2002), Bernhard Langer (2004), Ian Woosnam (2006) and Montgomerie (2010) with Jacklin being the captain when the match was tied in 1989.

Following Europe’s 14 ½ - 13 ½ win at The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport, Wales, Olazábal succeeds Colin Montgomerie as captain with the aim of retaining The Ryder Cup which Europe has won eight times and the United States seven times with one match tied since players from the Continent of Europe became eligible in 1979. Europe’s victories

Olazábal said: “The two Masters wins at Augusta National are the highlight of my playing career but this is my proudest moment. Golf has been my life and representing Europe in The Ryder Cup has given me so much enjoyment. So to be named the European Ryder Cup captain is something very special and I am looking forward to the next 20 months before we reach Medinah.

“Without question The Ryder Cup has given me many memorable times especially with Seve from the moment we were first partners in 1987 and Europe won in America for the first time. We were unbeaten in 1989 and 1991 and we won our last match together in 1993. “Seve was also our Captain at Valderrama in 1997 and that was especially significant because the match was played in Spain and on the Continent for the first time and, of course, we won. In all I’ve played under five Captains – Tony Jacklin, Bernard Gallacher, Mark James, Ian Woosnam and Seve – and the last in 2006 with Woosie was one to remember because we won 18 ½ - 9½. I played two fourball matches with Sergio (Garcia) and we won both and then I beat Phil Mickelson in the singles which was the last match I played. “It was also a wonderful experience to be involved as a vice captain with Nick Faldo in 2008 and then again with Colin Montgomerie when we regained the Cup at Celtic Manor last year. I’ve learned a lot along the way and linked to my own experiences I look forward to drawing on all that knowledge with the aim, of course, to keeping the Cup in our possession. We all know The Ryder Cup is one of the most exciting and important competitions in the golfing calendar, and that it always inspires team members and spectators alike, but there is nothing like holding that trophy at the end of the week.

of his right foot and two in his left, struck his first shots at the age of two at the Real Golf de San Sebastian, set in the lush foothills of the Pyrenees. He was drawn to the golf course because it was where his father, Gaspar, worked as the greenkeeper and his mother, Julia, as wardrobe mistress. It was on the practice range at Real Golf de San Sebastian in 1979 that Olazábal also met Sergio Gomez, who would go on to become his long-time friend and manager.

Olazábal turned professional in 1985 when he led from start to finish to win The European Tour Qualifying School at La Manga in his native Spain and he made an immediate impact by becoming The Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 1986 when he finished runner-up to Ballesteros in the then Order of Merit. He set new records with two wins on the way to earning three times what any other first-time Tour professional had earned with a stroke average of 70.69.

Aged seven, Olazábal won the Spanish Championship for under nines. Soon afterwards, Ballesteros broke through on The European Tour and Olazábal, although committed to studying at the public school in Fuenterrabia, knew that he wanted to aspire to such heights especially when three years later Ballesteros returned to his own home further along the Spanish coast with the famous silver claret jug following his 1979 Open Championship triumph.

Olazábal has won 23 times on The European Tour International Schedule with 30 wins in all worldwide and he became the second Spaniard to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame when he joined his great friend Seve Ballesteros (inducted in 1999) in that illustrious group during a moving ceremony at St Augustine, Florida, in November, 2009.

Jesus Arruti, the club professional who spent marathon session after marathon session with Olazábal on the practice range, and Gomez, guided him through a meteoric amateur career during which he won the ‘triple crown’ of British Boys’ Championship, British Amateur Championship and British Youths’ Championship. He also captured the Spanish Amateur Open Championship in 1983 and 1984, the Italian Amateur Open Championship in 1983 and the Belgian International Youths’ Championship in 1984.

“I have spent a lot of my career in America and the fans there have always been fair to me. We want to keep the Cup, and that will be our priority, but I know that the American team will share with us the desire for this match to continue the fabulous tradition of The Ryder Cup with fair play and good sportsmanship the vital ingredients. “I have accepted the captaincy but I think my desire to keep playing is known by everyone. This is the first of four tournaments in succession I am playing on the Desert Swing of The European Tour International Schedule. I am looking forward to competing again and giving myself the chance to win... But I want to stress it is a great honour to become the European Ryder Cup captain and I will be committed to getting everything right in the build-up to the 2012 match.” Olazábal, who won the Masters Tournament in 1994 and again in 1999 after recovering from rheumatoid polyarthritis in three joints

Medinah Country Club

Medinah Country Club’s Number 3 Championship Course, close to Chicago, has hosted three Major Championships – the US Open in 1949, 1975 and in 1990 when Olazábal finished tied eighth and the US PGA Championship in 1999 and 2006. It has also staged a US Senior Open. The course was designed by Scotsman Tom Bendelow and carved out of an oak tree forest in rolling terrain and opened in 1928. After the 1999 US PGA Championship Rees Jones, the renowned architect, undertook a modification project and the course played to more than 7,500 yards from the championship tees in the 2006 US PGA Championship.

Bridgestone Golf and the newest member of its TOUR team Davis Love III, recently announced that they’ll be teaming up for a season-long effort to benefit Golf 9/12. Bridgestone Golf will contribute $100 to Golf 9/12 for every birdie that Love cards from the start of the 2011 PGA TOUR season through September 11th—a sum, based on Love’s storied career, that should climb above $30,000.

According to Dan Murphy, Bridgestone Golf’s Vice President of Marketing, “Bridgestone is thrilled to team with Davis and Golf 9/12. We hope that fans across the globe will cheer on Davis as he tallies birdies that will help Golf 9/12 in their mission of restoring the sense of unity that we all felt in the aftermath of September 11th, 2001.”

Golf 9/12 is a brand new initiative that was created in an effort to recapture the collective spirit of unity that swept through the country the day after 9/11/01 (see www.golf912.org). Golf 9/12 encourages people to take part in a global day of golf, connected by a live mobile scoring and social networking application, in which $12 will be added to players’ greens

“Every birdie putt that I stand over in 2011 now takes on additional meaning,” Love emphasized. “I’m happy to play a small part in the mission of the Golf 9/12 organization. Knowing that every birdie I make will help benefit our brave men and women, at home and abroad and will help foster a universal spirit of unity, is added motivation for me! I am

truly honored to be part of this organization.” Bridgestone plans to track Love’s success on the course through its website, www.bridgestonegolf.com, and golf fans should check the site to track progress. Beginning his PGA TOUR season Love will play the new Bridgestone TOUR B330-S golf ball and Bridgestone Golf prototype irons (3-PW). In addition to his new Bridgestone equipment, Love will showcase the Bridgestone brand on his Tour bag, hat and glove. Dan Murphy, Bridgestone Golf’s Vice President of Marketing, expressed clear delight in the company’s Tour line-up for 2011: “What a coup for Bridgestone, to start the new year with an icon such as Davis Love III on our Tour Team. His enthusiasm for our new B330-S ball and our entire brand momentum has infused us with tremendous energy as we enter the 2011 season.”

World news

Padraig Harrington Takes on new role Two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington has become the first “Working for Golf” ambassador for the sport’s ruling Royal and Ancient Club. The 39-year-old Dubliner, who at Birkdale three years ago became the first European golfer to make a successful defence of the Claret Jug since James Braid in 1906, will be promoting the work of the St Andrewsbased governing body on his travels. Chief Executive Peter Dawson said: “Padraig is a role model in the game and when he offered his time to support our golf development and rules education activities, we recognised the potential to reach the widest possible audience. “His active involvement in golf’s bid to rejoin the Olympic Games was an important factor in our success in what is a key development for the future growth of the game.”

Harrington, along with Matteo Manassero, Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen, spoke at the bid presentation to the International Olympic Committee two years ago and golf will return to the Games in Brazil in 2016 after an absence of more than a century. In his new role he will coach young people in R&A-funded golf development programmes, appear in Rules of Golf multimedia productions, promote the etiquette of the game, take part in biomechanical equipment testing sessions and support the work of the R&A Foundation. “The R&A has been a constant feature of my development in the game, from playing in boys and amateur events through to winning The Open Championship,” he commented. “I appreciate all the guidance and opportunities they provided along the way.

“I am delighted to have this opportunity to give something positive back to the game, particularly in those countries around the world where golf is still in its infancy, introducing boys and girls to golf so they can benefit from the values that the game teaches you. “I am constantly amazed at how much the R&A do for the game worldwide from development to the rules, etiquette and other areas. “The more I learnt the more I wanted to get involved in their work and, given that I play a global schedule, I am well-placed to assist on various projects around the world.” In his first act as an ambassador Harrington announced the R&A’s continued support for grassroots development programmes in Ireland, worth more than £200,000 over the next three years.

Teen prodigy Rory McIlroy has set the European Tour alight since turning pro on 18th September 2007. Hard-hitting Rory was always destined to become a professional golfer since the moment he recorded a 40-yard drive aged just two-years-old. His first hole in one came when he was just nine and he played in his first professional European Tour event as a 16-year-old in 2005 at The Forest of Arden. His amazing amateur career saw him conquer Ireland and Europe, before becoming just the second person to top the World Amateur Rankings in 2007. Rory represented Europe in the winning Junior Ryder Cup team in 2004, before becoming the youngest winner of the prestigious West of Ireland and Irish Close Championships in 2005. The following year he successfully retained both Irish amateur titles and in August 2006 he won the European Amateur Championship. Rory shot into the public eye with his superb opening three-under-par 68 in the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, the only bogey-free round of the day. He went on to tie for 42nd position and accept the Silver Medal as leading amateur. Rory went on to make the cut in his first professional event at the Quinn Direct British

Masters, and finished third in his second professional event, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. These successes earned the golfing sensation enough money to virtually assure his place in the top 115. Despite high expectations, Rory keeps a cool head on his young shoulders and lets his golf do the talking. In 2008 Rory exceeded his expectations by making it to the Volvo Masters at Valderrama and entering the elite of the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings. At the beginning of the 2009 season Rory was beaten in a play-off for the UBS Hong Kong Open title - this performance elevated him into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings which has assured him a coveted place in the 2009 Masters Tournament at Augusta in April. Rory’s maiden victory came in the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic where he endured a nail-biting final hole and ultimately beat Justin Rose to the title by one shot. Rory finished in 2nd place in the inaugural European Tour Race To Dubai. Rory made his mark in the USA in April 2010 when he won the Quail Hollow Championship on the PGA Tour shooting a course record 62 on the final day, beating Phi Mickelson by four shots.

G+ by GOLFINO Spring/Summer 2011

G+ Women. Pacific-Blue Sporty-Chic In the G+ Pacific-Blue module, GOLFINO have combined the monochrome palette of black, white and marl with some of the loud colours associated with the 80s and 90s: acid-green and pacific-blue set the tone. Casual wear with discreet high-tech functionality is represented by a hooded sweater made of a trendy, mixed-grey jersey material, which looks like a simple sweater from the outside but is thinly laminated on the inside – making it 100% waterproof. The thin hood can be tucked into the collar, while pleats lend the sweater the necessary touch for a feminine, sporty-chic look. The silicone laminate material innovation embodies the ever-present performance aspect and can be found throughout the entire module in soft stripes. The latest fashion trends,

such as pagoda shoulders, are included and given a sporty interpretation with puffed sleeves on the polo shirts and half-zip sweaters. The outerwear in this module also features functional Dry Comfort. A further highlight is the extremely light and waterproof reversible jacket, which boasts powerful colours on one side and discreet shades of grey on the other. The Dry Comfort polo shirt with racerback design, integrated bra, numerous seams and mesh inserts for ventilation is a real eye-catcher in this module. The outfit is completed by a waterproof waistcoat with an extra-high collar and asymmetrical design, as well as the techno stretch capri in thermo cool in a jeans look with a pleated hem on the lower leg. European Senior Tour Event for Yorkshire in June 2012?

Regional NEWS

Regional NEWS

The Yorkshire Golf Guide

Would you believe it, but Yorkshire has not enjoyed a professional golf event for nearly 20 years? Robin Snook, Bob Marchant and Vincent Dobson, the team behind sports promotions company Lyfab Enterprises, have been in discussions with the European Senior Tour and Fulford Golf Club for over two years and are determined to make the event happen next year. The Yorkshire Golf Guide has been keeping close tabs on their progress and can report that many of the key elements needed to stage a prestige professional golf event already appear to be in place. The European Seniors Tour is very keen to return to Yorkshire, and in particular Fulford Golf Club, the home of the Benson and Hedges event for many years. Many of the players who played on the main tour then are now eligible to play on the Senior Tour. They would like nothing better than to make a nostalgic return to the scene of former glories, with Mark James and Gordon Brand, regular tour players and yeoman Yorkshire men, personally adding their support to the considerable efforts being made by Robin and the team to bring World Class Golf back to the county. Discussions are ongoing with a number of key Yorkshire partners in the media, charity, tourism and educational sectors to ensure that the event has maximum impact. York University, which is adjacent to Fulford Golf Club, has excellent facilities to assist with car parking for example, and Visit York and Welcome to

Yorkshire, for whom golf is a stated initiative for tourism growth, are very supportive of the event and the potential benefits to the region. Robin Snook continued “we also intend to promote interest and support from individuals who are unashamedly golf and Yorkshire loving folk, by creating an exclusive members club, which, for an annual subscription, will deliver a generous range of exclusive merchandising, ticketing and hospitality benefits” The only reason why the event has not happened yet is due to the recession which has significantly reduced the appetite of Corporate Yorkshire to invest at the same levels of 2008. Having said that, the team also remain convinced that businesses still need the oxygen of publicity and that if not at Title Sponsorship level (c£200,000), the Official Partner package (c£40k) is good value for the right company. Hole sponsorships at £10,000 and Pro-Am teams at £1,000 are also available. Benefits include a share of £1.5million worth of media value across Sky TV, terrestrial TV, and radio and press coverage as well as on course advertising, pro-am teams and off-course hospitality. With an expected crowd of between 10-15,000 spectators at the event, there is a great opportunity for a number of companies to make a big impression on a big stage. For more information on the proposed Yorkshire Seniors event in 2012, please contact Robin Snook on 07789 484367 or by email at robin@snook.ndo.co.uk.

The Yorkshire Golf Guide

North Yorkshire Introduction

North Yorkshire North Yorkshire is England’s largest county with an area of more than 800,000 hectares to explore. The county is fascinating, and no matter what your interest or time to spare, offers a huge range of activities and attractions.

The county of North Yorkshire stretches across Northern England from its spectacular coastline in the East, across Moors and fertile valleys to the Dales in the West, and attracts millions of tourists who flock to see its traditional market towns, beautiful countryside and historic sites. The county’s greatest asset is its wonderful scenery, whether it is the NorthYork Moors, to be enjoyed on foot, by car or steam railway or the beauty and tranquillity of the Yorkshire Dales . Both the Dales and the Moors have been brought into people’s living rooms across the world by the success of television series such as the stories of James Herriot and the Heartbeat adventures.
Along the 45 miles of coastline there is more than the traditional resorts of Scarborough and Filey

and Whitby with its Dracula and Captain Cook connections and spectacular ruined abbey, the area also has literary and cultural attractions such as the Stephen Joseph Theatre. The ruins of monasteries scatter the county at places such as Rievaulx, Jervaulx and Fountains Abbey - a World Heritage site.

The Harrogate District is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, flourishing towns, dales villages and heritage sites. The town of Harrogate , has a rich spa history, combined with parks, gardens and floral displays.
Close by is the medieval market town of Knaresborough famous for its 14th Century ruined castle, its maze of narrow streets and Mother Shiptons Cave. There are also spectacular memories of bygone days in North Yorkshire with magnificent structures which have stood for centuries. Selby Abbey and Ripon Cathedral are two of the finest examples of English architecture to be found anywhere in the world.

North Yorkshire is indeed a land of diversity.

This Championship links course, is situated by the shores of the North Sea and measures 6750 yards from the white tees with a par 72. The Ladies play from red tees all the year round and their course measures 5545 yards with a par 73. The course itself is flat and easy to walk. It is protected by strategically placed bunkers both on the fairways and around the greens. In addition, and in common with many Championship links courses, it is a true test of golf when the wind blows. The club have hosted many County and Professional events and is the home to the

Amateur scratch competitions the Cleveland Salver and the Mid Amateur International. Signature Hole Hole 11, ‘Ridges’, Par 4, 429 yards (White Tee) Par 4 with a ridge to negotiate from the tee shot, fairly straight hole with a well guarded green. A water hazard is on the right side of the rough however it has to be a very wayward shot to catch it. Professionals Tip: Keep to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this will open the green up, for your second shot the middle of the green is always a good option, get to greedy and you may pay the consequences.

Fulford

From the A64: Take the A19 junction towards York City centre. Travel through Fulford and turn right at the traffic lights signposted University / Fulford Golf Club. Take the right exit from the mini roundabout signposted Fulford Golf Club. The Golf Club is 200m on the right side of Heslington Lane.

The course was planned and constructed by Major Charles MacKenzie, the brother and business partner of the now legendary Dr Alistair MacKenzie who designed Augusta National and Cypress Point. Regarded as one of the finest tests of inland golf, the course is frequently graded in the Top 100 and is built on predominantly sandy heathland, which drains exceptionally well and provides an excellent surface for all year round golf. The greens, which were voted ‘’best on the European Tour’’, remain consistent throughout the year, and the course drains well during the winter.

The course is flat and tree lined, with heather and well placed bunkers providing the hazards. The course is a good challenge for all golfers. Signature Hole: 17th, Par 4. ‘Langer’ The line from the tee is down the left hand side of the fairway, possibly using a long iron to avoid running into the small trees. This allows an easy pitch over Germany Beck into the welcoming green. The approach from the right is blocked by a large oak requiring a high shot if you are to make the green. Watch out for the ash tree by the left side of the green made famous by Bernhard Langers ‘tree’ shot in 1981

to test your golf on a gem of a course in the peace and tranquillity of superb countryside then you can do no better than enjoy the hospitality offered at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club.

Whatever the time of year, you will be impressed with the spectacular scenery and the peace and quiet which will surround you during the whole of your round. The view over the moors from the 13th tee is unsurpassed in the whole of the North of England. Looking away from the moors, the course offers distant views of the Yorkshire Wolds and The Hambleton Hill – both areas of outstanding natural beauty. If you want

Signature Holes Like all courses, Kirkbymoorside has its signature holes. Whatever your handicap the ‘right to left’ drive from the 7th tee will provide a true test to those seeking par and the 10th is not named the ‘widow maker’ for nothing. It’s a tough drive on the par four 13th, but the view from the tee out to the moors past the village of Gillamoor, makes even the poorest tee shot (almost) forgettable.

Book a society of 16 or more and the organiser plays for free Society packages from £33.00 to include:27 holes of golf, coffee & bacon roll & soup & sandwiches.

Founded in 1908, Middlesbrough golf course was based at Saltersgill Farm until 1938, when it moved to its present location which was designed by James Braid (five times Open Champion), a renowned golf course architect who fully exploited the natural ravines and undulating land. The course was officially opened in April 1939 and in 1990, new holes were laid through acquired woodland to give it the layout as it is today. Situated in countryside five miles south of Middlesbrough the course has stunning views of the Cleveland Hills and is a joy to play as many have found, not least many of the

country’s top young players who arrive every year to play in the North of England Youths Open – a tournament started and run by the club themselves which has grown to attract national and international backing from the major golf bodies. A 16-year-old Sandy Lyle and Richard Boxall are among the winners of what is rated a very prestigious tournament. There are many attractive and challenging holes, the tree-lined short 4th (197 yards), the dog-leg 11th around or over Oakwood (522 yards), the 8th which has been described by many visitors as one of the most attractive holes they have played.

A true gem for all visitors. Romanby nestles in North Yorkshire’s lush rolling landscape. It offers an uniquely challenging championship standard golf course - and everything that goes with it. The course is a joy to play and several lakes, as well as the River Wiske, provide not just extra features but also homes for many a variety of waterfowl. Designed by Will Adamson, the greens are constructed to USPGA specification & includes large teeing areas around 400 square metres. Each hole has a character of its own and as the various trees and shrubs rapidly mature, the course gains more and more definition.

The highlight of any round at Romanby, must be negotiating their own Amen Corner without dropping a stroke - the par 3 11th over a lake, hole 12, one of the longest par 5’s you’ll ever come across, and the par four 13th, ranked stroke index one. It provides an ideal venue for all types of golfers but also to celebrations and parties and the picturesque setting is perfect for weddings too. An easy-walking 18-hole course, Scarthingwell is set in tranquil rural surroundings and has become well established since its opening in 1990, providing a fair test for golfers of all abilities, as well as gaining a reputation for its friendly and informal atmosphere. The Course is owned and managed by members of the Pick family who developed the site from jointly-owned land in the early 1990s and still live near by, having farmed in the area since 1925. The Head Greenkeeper at Scarthingwell is John Waite, who has held the position since 1995. Together with his three assistants, John works closely with the owners in maintaining the excellent standard of the course. Laid out in 1899, our Par 71 Championship Course can justly claim to be one of the oldest in Yorkshire and provides a real challenge for golfers of all handicaps. Set out in 6,300 yards, it is a moorland links which commands stunning views over Baildon and Rombald Moors. Two special features, Greenhouse Hill and Birkin Hill, have irregular contours and accommodate the testing Par 4 10th and Par 3 14th, both of which require accurate shots to well protected greens. The course runs in two loops with the 10th hole and 18th hole each finishing outside the

Clubhouse. Many holes are played along welldefined, tree-lined fairways to spacious, but fast and testing greens with subtle borrows. Always in immaculate condition, the course has recently undergone an impressive £1 million improvement programme to ensure that it remains pristine and playable throughout the seasons in all but the most adverse weather conditions. The course continues to be used for many prestigious Yorkshire Championships and is the home of The Hawksworth Trophy, a 36hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers in Northern England.

Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861, 62, 64 and 1867.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course.

It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were made by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1913 and again by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

After playing why not visit our Clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality. It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.

Garforth

Ideally located from the motorway and easily accessible the Club is to the north east of Leeds approximately 2 miles from the M1/A63 junction off the A642. Turn onto Long Lane which runs between Garforth and the village of Barwick-in-Elmett.

The course was established in 1912 by a group of local enthusiasts and modified a year later under the expert guidance of Dr Alister Mackenzie. Major features of the course are the Cock and Carr Becks which meander through the course. The Cock Beck is reputed to have run with blood during the Battle of Towton the most infamous conflict of the War of the Roses in 1461. Two loops of nine make the course eminently adaptable, played over gentle undulating parkland and suitable for all ages and abilities. The Clubhouse boasts modern locker rooms, an independent visitor changing room, a large lounge, extensive dining rooms and spacious

balcony at first floor level offering panoramic views over the course. Recently appointed caterers provide excellent food and service and can accommodate all parties and corporate hospitality if required. Various society packages are available and provide excellent value. The 15th hole at Garforth is probably the signature hole and is the first of what is described in Yorkshire Golf as possibly ‘the best 4 closing holes in the County’. Some 444 yards long, an uphill drive leads to the decision as to whether to lay up short of Carr Beck or take on the challenge and go for the green, some 90 yards beyond the stream.

Howley Hall

05. How to Find

Established in 1900 and named after the Elizabethan Mansion which stood adjacent to the 17th fairway Howley Hall is a hidden gem in central Yorkshire. Formerly heathland the course has been changed over the years and is now parkland with an abundance of trees to make you think about the game and where you want to play your next shot from. With a par of 71 and the standard scratch of 71 off white tees set over 6454 Yards it can be a quite testing but very enjoyable course. Positional play is rewarded at Howley Hall however there are plenty of hazards to ruin your card if you stray from the fairways.

Signature Holes: Hole 14, Par 3 Par 3 in the trees. Cross bunkers in front of the green, bunkers to each side, make accuracy a premium. A lovely hole both to look and to play. Hole 16, Par 5. One of the most picturesque and interesting holes on the course. Panoramic views from an exposed tee on this par 5, a blind second into the once terrace gardens of the old Hall, a tight third with the green guarded by a bunkers on both sides. Again a deep ditch follows the contour of the green.

From the East: Leave the M62 at junction 28. Take the A650 towards Bradford and Morley. Keep in the left hand lane and look out for the Mermaid Fish Restaurant on the left. Turn left at the next major set of traffic lights (Half way House). The entrance to the course is ¾ of a mile on the left. From the West: Leave the M62 at junction 27 (M621 Leeds). Stay in the left hand lane – Morley. Take the A650 towards Wakefield / Morley. Through the next major junction with the Toby carvery on the left. Turn right at the next traffic lights (Half Way House). The entrance to the course is approx ¾ of a mile on the left. Ilkley is one of the finest golf clubs in Yorkshire, both in terms of beauty and for an unforgettable round of golf. It boasts two former Ryder Cup captains as honorary life members, Colin Montgomerie, who learnt his golf at the club, and Mark James, who lives locally. The club is extremely popular with societies, corporates & casual visitors. Much of this is down to its picturesque setting next to the River Wharfe with Ilkley Moor as a backdrop. With a number of holes designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the course is a real test whatever your handicap. For the first seven holes the river is ever present, with the second,

third and fourth holes being played onto and off an island. Moving inland the tree-lined fairways ensure the need for accurate drives and approaches. With the greens close to the tees and no deep rough you can complete the round relatively quickly enabling you to comfortably enjoy a couple of rounds in a day. John Hammond has been at the club for over 30 years and is one of the friendliest and most knowledgeable professionals in the county. His well-stocked shop always provides a few bargains too. The steward and stewardess, Michael and Meg Jarvis, can also provide a range of menus to cater for your party throughout the day.

Keighley

At the roundabout that connects these two roads, which is adjacent to Keighley Cougar RLFC, take the exit for the B6265 for Utley/Skipton. After 1/2 mile turn right into Birchwood Rd at the Roebuck PH. Turn left into Keelham lane as signposted to Keighley Golf Club in approx 1/2 mile.

Keighley’s course has been maturing and developing for over a century and today offers a thorough test for the most accomplished golfer and high-handicapper. Long par fours such as the 1st, 5th, 6th and 15th all require good length off the tee if the green is to be hit in regulation, and even then fairway woods and long irons are often needed to reach the target. Not that the par three holes offer an easy respite from a genuine test of skill and judgement. As early as the 2nd, the player needs to negotiate an intimidating, overhanging oak on the left and a series of devilish bunkers on the right - often into the prevailing wind

Keighley Golf Club

- while the 16th requires good length and pinpoint accuracy, as its stroke index of 8 confirms. Keighley is a course on which the skills of three Yorkshire Champions - Arnold Fell (1931), Roger Mitchell (1975) and Phil Wood (1990/94) - have been honed and tempered. It is perhaps a measure of the course that Wood should elect the par-four 17th - stroke index 6 - as his favourite hole and nominate it as ‘one of the most difficult and dangerous finishing holes in Yorkshire golf’. The Clubhouse and its extensive facilities, will provide a welcome rest after your game.

Moor Allerton

From Leeds: (5 miles) Take the A61 Harrogate Road. About 1 mile past the intersection with the A6120 ringroad, turn right at the traffic lights into Wigton Lane. At the end turn left, then take the first right (Tarn Lane) to the cross roads, turn left. After 200 yards, the Clubhouse is on the right.

Facilities Moor Allerton is the first golf course designed in the UK by the famous American architect Robert Trent Jones and as such is typical of his work. (His other courses include Spyglass Hill, Hazeltine and Sotogrande). The Trent Jones trade marks of shallow bunkers, huge teeing grounds, lakes and large contoured greens are all evident with three loops of nine holes, that all start and finish at the Clubhouse. Set in a mighty 220 acres of undulating Yorkshire Countryside with streams and lakes to add a little spice, Moor Allerton is a picturebook golf course. Every hole presents its own particular challenge to all levels of golfer.

A number of major national and international events have been played at the Club with many world class players having competed including Seve Ballesteros, Tom Weiskopf, Tony Jacklin, Gary Player and Greg Norman. Hole 14, Par 5: Tough driving hole with three lakes down the left and gorse to the right. Drive as close to the right as you dare. Second to landing area over third lake. Moortown

Entrance to the club is immediately after the Shell Petrol Station on A61 (Leeds to Harrogate) about ½ mile north of A6120 between Primley Park View and Sandmoor Lane. Travelling south on A61 make U-turn immediately past Petrol Station located on right hand side of dual carriageway about ½ mile south of Leeds Grammar School. On entry and exit please call the office to open the security barrier.

The founders were fortunate that in 1908 Dr MacKenzie was in the district having nearly completed the layout at Alwoodley, which was already very popular. He joined the deliberations at Moortown, and was soon to realise that here was golfing country par excellence. Features of the original course at Moortown which received much comment were the bunkers, being perfect examples of artificial hazards imitating natural seaside contours. Secondly was the change in green design, where Dr. MacKenzie adopted the larger, undulating seaside greens.

The one event which, has contributed so much to Moortown’s reputation as a championship course was the staging of the Ryder Cup in 1929. The first ever Ryder Cup on European soil. The par 3, 10th hole is MacKenzie’s renowned short hole “Gibraltar”, Moortown’s signature hole. The vista from the tee is stunning, with a combination of heavy bunkering and heather to the right and a cavernous bunker to the short left all protecting the green. The green itself is of typical MacKenzie design, various tiers make three putts a common occurrence on this undulating masterpiece.

11. How to Find

Scarcroft

Leave Leeds on A58 Wetherby Road, then turn left at the Bracken Fox Pub, Scarcroft Golf Club is ½ mile along Syke Lane from the Bracken Fox.

Established in 1937, and designed by leading golf architect Major Charles Mackenzie, this gloriously undulating course with its rich variety of mature trees and spacious fairways is set in spectacular wooded parkland in the idyllic West Yorkshire countryside. A challenging test for both the professional and enthusiastic amateur alike, the magnificent 6,456 yard par 71 course regularly plays host to a number of prestigious golfing events including county matches of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs, as well as English Ladies Golf Association tournaments. The names of many of the holes reflect the natural beauty of

the rural setting starting with the formidable opener, the Jubilee Oak, and continuing with Badger’s Wood, Hawthorns, Poplars and Forest Hill to name just a few. But don’t be fooled by their rustic charm and the undeniable beauty of the peaceful surroundings. Because, whilst there are few more delightful courses in the whole of Yorkshire, it can still spring a surprise for the seasoned pro as the aptly named Witches Green suggests. Signature Hole: 14th ‘Dogleg’, Par 5, 484 yards A good long tee shot is required to the dogleg if you want to reach the green in two. It is well guarded by a pond 26 yards short of the green.

Facilities Bar, Restaurant, Putting Green, Practice Range, Pro Shop, Lessons. The club is happy to host meetings and events.

The Yorkshire Golf Guide

East Yorkshire Introduction

East Yorkshire East Yorkshire, otherwise known as the East Riding of Yorkshire, includes the northern part of what was Humberside and the city of Kingston upon Hull - Britain’s third largest port. This magnificent waterfront city boasts a relaxing atmosphere along with a vibrant mix of culture, shopping and nightlife. Hull is situated on the north bank of the River Humber, which is a natural boundary to East Yorkshire. The Humber Bridge was completed in 1981. It’s the longest

single span suspension bridge in the world with a main span length of 4,624 feet. It truly is a magnificent feat of engineering. To the west are the Yorkshire Wolds, a chalk formation, and you can explore the rolling hills along the 79 mile long Yorkshire Wolds Way. To the south-east is the flat coastal plain of Holderness which terminates at the wild Spurn Peninsular East Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast stretches from Spurn Head in the south, to Flamborough

Head in the north, in the district of Withernsea. Spurn Head is a National Nature Reserve. It’s a narrow projection of sand and shingle, constantly changing with the tides and a stop over for thousands of migrating birds. Bridlington, with its beautiful beaches and brand new award winning promenades and gardens, offers a host of all weather activities. This famous seaside resort has an irresistible appeal for people of all ages and a special Bridlington welcome that is guaranteed to warm your heart.

01. How to Find

Bridlington

From York: Follow the A166 to Driffield. At the roundabout take the A614 towards Bridlington. Follow the A614 as far as Carnaby. At the roundabout, turn right to follow Bridlington Bay Road (signposted Bridlington South). At the next roundabout turn left on to the A165 then, on entering Bridlington, turn right on to Kingsgate Road. Follow Kingsgate Road to the traffic lights and turn right on to Cardigan Road. Take the second right turn on to Belvedere Road and continue to the end. You have arrived at Bridlington Golf Club!

Bridlington Golf Club is sited on the A165 South of the town and has magnificent views of the bay. It is an easy walking, 6638 yard course, with some of the finest greens in the area. The presentation of the course is excellent. With thousands of trees screening the fairways, six water features and many well-positioned bunkers, it offers a challenge to the discerning golfer.

Signature Holes: 14th. ‘Woodside’. Widely regarded as the courses signature hole is a long Par 4 with a large pond guarding the front portion of the green. The second shot becomes a dilemma whether to take the water on or lay up. A par is always a good score but much higher is the norm and the hole is regarded as the ultimate card wrecker.

The Clubhouse offers the opportunity to relax after your game with all modern comforts. Enjoy a drink at the bar and sample excellent food while being looked after by our friendly staff. The club welcomes all visitors.

16th. ‘Pitts’. Stunning views of the Bay momentarily take your attention from the shot in hand. A long Par 3 to a well protected green. A long Iron or fairway wood will be needed to thread the ball on to the large green.

With USGA greens and tees along with fully drained fairways you can be sure that the playing surfaces are of the highest quality at all times of the year, and the friendly Clubhouse staff make sure that your post-round experience is just as good. Recent developments at the club include the new luxury Changing & Locker rooms, and the ambitions are to extend the Clubhouse further with a brand new function suite for large golfing parties, weddings and conferences. It’s all happening at Burstwick!

On the course, the 6 water hazards and 73 bunkers make for a fantastic challenge for golfers of all ability, with the layout designed to reward accuracy on every shot. Risk and reward is on the menu as numerous opportunities present themselves on many of the fantastic holes, but with that small risk of dropping a shot into the bunker, or losing a ball in the water. Signature Hole: 4th, Par 4. An elevated tee hitting down into a fairway guarded with 2 large fairway bunkers. Avoid these bunkers and you are left with a shot around 150-170 yards into a severely undulating green.

Cottingham Parks

03. How to Find Cottingham Parks Leisure is located just off the A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Road. Travelling along the A164 turn towards Cottingham at the Skidby/Cottingham roundabout. Turn left after 200 yards, then turn right after 200 yards, this road will take you to the Clubhouse.

Cottingham Parks enjoys an excellent and growing reputation, being a popular destination for all types of groups. Opened in 1994, the 18 hole par 72, sss 71, 6453 yard course belies it’s age, making good use of the existing trees enhanced by landscaping and many man made water features. Cottingham Parks is an ideal location for an enjoyable golf break, visiting party or corporate day. While the course presents a fair challenge to all levels the modern spacious Clubhouse, with balcony overlooking the 1st tee and 18th green offers the perfect surrounding for relaxing with a pint and carrying out the inevitable post mortem.

Following the recent addition of Skidby Lakes to its portfolio, Cottingham Leisure can now offer 36 holes. These 2 courses present you with the ideal variety for that short golf break, with accommodation at the conveniently located and impressive Ramada Hull Hotel. The signature hole 12th is not the longest hole on the course, but it has seen the end of many promising medal cards. Water on the right hand side of the fairway demands an accurate tee shot, leaving an equally demanding approach shot over bunkers with more water to the right of the green, while out of bounds to the left catches anyone trying to play “safe”.

Sunday Breaks From only £79.99 per person Play 2 rounds of golf at Cottingham staying at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel Ring 01482 842394 for full details or visit www.cottinghamparks.co.uk

The scenic views across the course give a pleasing backdrop to this pleasant, maturing course where, as it’s name would suggest, water is the main feature, coming into play on no less than seven holes.

Offered as an option in the Cottingham Parks Golf and Leisure Sunday breaks package, the Skidby course although shorter, presents an equally pleasant and challenging test and is, like Cottingham Parks, and ideal venue for that day out or short break. Signature Hole: The signature hole is the 10th. Measuring 363 yards, the fairway slopes from left to right towards the stream that runs through the course. The further left you go, ‘the safe tee shot’, the more you have to play your 2nd shot over the water to an elevated green.

07. How to Find We are 8 miles North East of the market town of Beverley just off the A165 Bridlington Road. At the Brandesburton Roundabout take the exit signposted Leven. The golf club is approx ½ mile on the right.

The club formed in 1983 and is set in established grounds with mature trees and interesting water features. The easy walking course has wide fairways, but beware the many hazards that can ensnare the wayward shot. Close to, but protected from the coast, the course is extremely well drained and offers all year round excellent playing conditions, without temporary tees or greens and trolleys are never banned! The Course was originally constructed as nine holes and rapidly expanded to 18 and continues to develop to this day. Bunker, water hazards and trees are strategically

placed to make this a true thinking person’s course. A friendly reception awaits you in the shop from PGA Professional Peter Myers and his team. The shop is a well stocked outlet for all your golfing needs.

Facilities Clubhouse, Pro shop, Locker room, Bar and Pool table, Lessons

The Clubhouse offers a wide range of facilities with typical Yorkshire warmth for all members and visitors. There is a wide range of refreshments and an ever changing menu. Either sit in the dining area or outside in the summer months where the tables and chairs are located overlooking the 18th green. Hainsworth Park is a family owned business and we pride ourselves on our warm, welcoming environment.

From the West M62/A63: M62 becomes A63. Take exit marked Humber Bridge A15 / Beverley A164. Go straight across first roundabout and take first exit next roundabout onto A164 Beverley. Straight over next roundabout and after approx 1.5 miles turn right into Riplingham Road. Club entrance is on the right just after the sharp right hand bend.

A classic James Braid test laid out in 1921, Hull Golf Club provides a tough start and finish. You will enjoy spectacular views over the City of Hull, Humber Estuary and the magnificent Humber Bridge. The par 70 layout measures less than 6300 yards from the back tees tees, despite recent innovations in club and ball technology, John Dockar’s course record of 64 remained intact for a quarter of a century before being bettered by one shot in 2010. The tight tree-lined fairways punish any wayward shot and the classic Braid bunkering makes club selection difficult for approach shots. Even after a solid drive and precision approach, a

par is not guaranteed as the fast, subtle greens present a challenge to even the best of putters. Hull’s feature hole is the 10th which has seen anything from a one to a 15 recorded over the years. A driveable downhill par 4 with a picturesque pond eating into the right and front of the green make this the ultimate risk and reward hole. Mid-irons off the tee will usually leave only a wedge in, but those taking driver can expect an eagle putt, a watery grave or, worse still, three off the tee with out of bounds hugging the right hand side of the fairway. Imagine 18 holes of championship golf set around 120 acres of natural beauty, with the Stunning Yorkshire Wolds as your vista! At KP Club you will leave feeling fantastic and eagerly anticipating your next round...

KP Clubs rapid rise as one of the areas top golfing destinations has seen us become home of ‘The William Hunt Trilby Tour’ an event watched by millions of viewers on Sky Sports TV. Signature Hole The signature hole of the course is the Par 5, 4th hole that measures 605 yards. The fairway is guarded by a huge old oak tree before a tight approach to a well guarded green; the views from this green take in the Vale of York and York Minster itself , quite often playing into the prevailing wind – a hole whereby a par on here really is a fantastic score.

The Yorkshire Golf Guide

South Yorkshire Introduction

South Yorkshire You could be forgiven for thinking that all South Yorkshire can offer is an industrial history of mining and steel manufacturing. The main towns within this Yorkshire and Humber county did grow around those industries, themselves having huge educational and historical appeal for visitors but, thanks to multi-million pound investment via government initiatives and Heritage Lottery funding, the whole area is buzzing with regeneration and redevelopment, seeing some of its slightly dusty, historical gems being given a good polish and the chance to shine again.

In addition to firm favourites (Doncaster Railway, Doncaster Racecourse), and those restored to their former glories (Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park Museum, Wentworth Castle), the area is brimming with new, lively, modern venues offering a variety of entertainment, culture and attractions for more cosmopolitan tourists including: art galleries & exhibitions (Millennium Galleries, Graves Art Gallery), contemporary/traditional music & theatre (Sheffield City Hall, The Leadmill, The Harley), sporting fixtures (Don Valley

Stadium, Hallam FM Arena, The Crucible), and state of the art shopping centres (Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks) - all of which mean this area is now a firm favourite for those visiting ‘up North’. If you enjoy the outdoors, South Yorkshire is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, Pennine Yorkshire and the Trans Pennine Trail which cuts right across the region. So there is never a shortage of things to see and do in this abundant area of Yorkshire.

Facilities Bar, Restaurant, Putting Green, Club Hire, Trolley Hire, Buggy Hire. Lessons, Pro Shop Lindrick is considered one of Britain’s finest inland courses - but it is unusual in that it finishes with a par three, albeit a great one. Lindrick is always remembered because it was there that Great Britain and Ireland beat the USA to win the 1957 Ryder Cup after a gap of 24 years. The Cup remained firmly in the grasp of the USA after that until 1985 when Europe won at the Belfry.

(some of which are very rare) can be seen around the course. The colour continues throughout the Summer and Autumn.

Lindrick has a mixed heathland and moorland with silver birch, heather and gorse lining the fairways. In 1998 Lindrick were winners of the National Award. In the spring when the gorse is in bloom, a plethora of wild flowers

Signature Holes: The 478 par five fourth is memorable with a downhill drive and a blind approach to a hidden green, while the 210 yard 18th is featured in the 500 World’s Greatest Golf Holes book.

Thanks to its enviable year-round fantastic condition, Lindrick is a course that is always playable no matter what the weather. Lindrick will certainly provide an excellent challenge for the visiting golfer, regardless of handicap.

A round of golf at Renishaw Park is definitely a game of two halves. Crossing back over the road there is the back 9 holes, set between the A6135 and the river Rother.

The first nine, with its six par 4’s and three par 3’s is rolling parkland where use of the driver requires good accuracy. Second shots to most par 4’s need to be carefully placed especially on the 3rd and 6th where pin positions can be very

tricky. The hole you will always remember is the 9th with its uphill narrow fairway cut across the side of the hill with mature trees on both sides. The second nine is flat and more open with four par 5’s, two par 3’s and three par 4’s. Use of the driver is a must on the longer holes but beware the rough if you stray too far out of line! The par 3 17th is an interesting hole, only 123 yards off the white markers, but shooting to a raised green with bunkers on both sides and a narrow gap between trees. Renishaw Park has been well known for a number of years now for the quality of its greens which are fast and true, some of the best in the area.

Renishaw Park Golf Club Mens Open Friday 27th May 2011 Maximum Handicap 24. ¾ Allowance. Golf Club Handicap Certificates Required. 18 Years & Over. One of the Winning team must attend to receive Prizes. £30-00 Per Pair. Payable with Entry. Enquiries to 01246 432044

Travel Spain > Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol Spain

The Costa del Sol lies in the province of Andalucia in the south of Spain. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This ‘Sun Coast’ runs for 150 km from Malaga to Estepona, with skies predominantly blue all year round and brilliant sunshine. Costa del Sol offers a series of large beaches, coves hidden amongst cliffs, famous leisure marinas such as ‘Puerto Banus’ and tranquil fishing ports.

In the provincial capital, Malaga, stands the military fortress of the Alcazaba, built by the Moors in the 11th century. At the far end of the Costa del Sol is the geographical & political oddity Gibraltar, with visits to see the Barbary Apes and abundant military history. This great diversity means that it has something to offer just about everyone, with enough entertainment and variety to please all types of visitor.

The Mediterranean sea is warm and safe and the hills and high mountains shelter the coastline, these elements allow for an all year micro climate making it the perfect location for golf. Known to many as the ‘Costa del Golf’ due to the outstanding choice of luxury golf courses set along this coastline, with over 50 to choose from you will have to keep returning to experience them all.
