Who says that all cabinets in your kitchen need to be matchymatchy? I love when the upper cabinets are light and bright, while the lower cabinets and/or island have a bit more oomph (think light or charcoal grey, contrasting wood, or even blue!). Choosing a different colour or stain for the lower cabinets brings visual interest to the space and can make the room feel taller. Bonus points if you use a contrasting material for the hood fan to stand out! Â

Marla With several years of white-on-white-on-white being the go-to look for kitchens, I really like how wooden accents can warm up a space and bring a slight rustic feel to it! My favourite is using wooden floating shelves to replace some upper cabinetry, but thick butcher blocks are another way to highlight natural tones in your design. The options are endless when bringing wood into the kitchen as an accent – and between you and I, shopping for these pieces might be the most fun.
