no attention to the spiritual implications of its subliminal messages. The holiday was historically developed by the Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and sadly, even the Jews at times practiced the forces of evil. In Deuteronomy 18, Moses condemned such wickedness. Halloween is detestable to the Lord and should be prohibited among the people of God (Deut. 18:9-14). It carries within its core demonic spirits. Images of the devil, skull masks, Grim Reapers, horror costumes, tombstones of the dead, graveyards, ghosts, spider webs and replicas of blood are all influenced by Satan as signs of death to provoke fear. Yet, the Scripture says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:7). I. Christians Must Not Imitate Evil Practices (Deut. 18:9) The sons of Israel were forbidden to imitate the sinful practices of the Canaanites and the Philistines. The term “imitate” in Hebrew means “to practice.” Likewise, the same principle applies to Christians today. We are to be imitators of God as beloved children (Eph. 5:1). Prohibited from conforming to worldly activities, we are not to be shaped by the world’s mold (Rom. 12:2). As the holiday of horror draws near, we must teach our children what the Word of God says about it and obey its commands. II. Christians Must Not Participate in Evil Practices (Deut. 18:10-12) The use of divination and witchcraft was a pre-existing tradition running ramped throughout the land of Canaan. Though the land was preserved by God for the Hebrews, driving out its idolatry was no easy task. As God required holiness from the Israelites, He also demands holiness from believers today. Remember the Scripture that says, “Do not

III. Christians Must Separate from Evil Practices (Deut. 18:13-14) Blamelessness is the requirement from the Lord God of all Christians. Another word for blameless is “holy,” which means “to be separate.” The same idea is reflected in the words of the prophet Isaiah and the apostle Paul, “Come out from their midst and be separate…purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of the Lord” (Isa. 52:11, 2 Cor. 6:17). God does not allow the practice of witchcraft, neither does He permit the entertainment of modern-day divination as mentioned earlier (Deut. 18:14). He wants you to trust Him by faith in everything. In the New Testament, believers are encouraged to “examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thess. 5:21-22). We are in a spiritual warfare against the world forces of darkness! (Eph. 6:12). As Halloween approaches, let us be different. Let us consider what God says about witchcraft and divination.

even expose them. For it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret” (Eph. 5:11-12).

Surprises! Surprises!

D

by Brenda Dedmon

o you like surprises? I like surprises that are fun and make me happy! One day, my friends had a surprise birthday party for me and I was really

surprised—especially when some friends from out of town came! Have your parents ever planned a surprise trip for your family? Do you remember how excited you were when they told you? As the day got closer, did your mother begin to help you pack what you would need and talk about all the things you would do? I am sure you were getting excited! It is always fun to go and discover new places and do different things. There were some children we read about in the Bible who had a big surprise when their parents told them they were going to see Jesus. They had heard about this man named Jesus who had healed sick people, healed blind people, and helped crippled people to walk. This story is in the Bible in Mark 10:13-16. Read the following story as it might have happened: heard Jesus was there teaching. There were a group of parents who heard this news and they thought how fun it would be for Jesus to meet their children and give them a blessing. They hurried home and gathered their children and told them they were going to meet Jesus. The children were so happy they put on their best clothes to go. As they were walking down the dusty road, they were laughing and chanting— “we are going to see Jesus!” Some gathered flowers on the roadside and some picked up rocks to take to Him. They were a noisy group walking down the road because they were so excited. Jesus’ disciples heard the group before they could even see them. They gathered and determined that Jesus would not want to be bothered with the children. They decided to turn them away. As soon as they saw them, they told them they had to leave. The children were so disappointed. However, Jesus saw what was happening and said, “No, don’t stop them, let them come and see

me.” The children began to run to Jesus, and He took them on His lap and talked to them. They shared the flowers and rocks with Him. The disciples were surprised that Jesus would spend time with children. Jesus said to them, “Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very center of life in the kingdom. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in” (Mark 10:13-16). He then gathered the children around Him and prayed a blessing over them. As the parents were returning home, they were so happy that Jesus told their children He loved them and that they were an important part of His ministry. The children all agreed this was the best surprise ever! Gather with your family and discuss ways you know Jesus loves you. How do you think you can show Jesus you love Him? Some things may even surprise you! About The Author

Because his little puzzles could be put together in any number of configurations, each of Nostradamus’s predictions seemed to come true over and over again. Whenever a new event occurred that matched one of his predictions, his puzzle was reworked. On that third day, I was reminded of Jesus’s words while He was nailed to the cross. “Abba Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36). Jesus was facing the worst moment of His life, but also the best. The boys and I spent many cold days homeschooling by a roaring fire, and on warmer days, we sat outside on the porch or on a blanket under a shade tree. But let me tell you, some days were ugly and rugged. Like the morning my youngest two began fighting over a long, white cat whisker one of them found on the floor. That is right…a prickly cat whisker. Determined to create a pleasant experience for our devotional time, I would serve the boys a bit of coffee in our breakfast nook because they liked being “grown up” like that. “The Joint’s non-invasive approach, the fact that they listen to me and then do an assessment of what needs to be done to fix and take care of the pain, that’s what I really appreciate about them,” he said. “They want their patients to weigh-in. it is convenient for me, not the doctors. This really is putting patient care first!” he concluded. The Joint began in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1999. It was started by a group of active athletes who used chiropractic care since high school but disliked that most chiropractors are only open weekdays, closed at 5 p.m., often closed two hours for lunch, and appointments were either required or preferred. Their goal was also to create a specific environment that would be warm and inviting to patients. “The environment is very open and comfortable, and the employees are extremely pleasant,” Payne added. “I feel really good about coming in, and of course, much better when I leave after having been adjusted. And yes, I have to say it, while all the doctors are great, Dr. Cody is my favorite.” Dr. Cody Middleton has been with The Joint since they opened in Chattanooga in November of 2019. “I knew that I wanted to do something in health from the time I was a young teenager growing up in Lexington, Tennessee. My dad installed floors, and that is a grueling job. He always used chiropractic care, so I guess it was a natural path for me to take,” said Dr. Cody. The Joint has several doctors, each heading up one clinic location but also rotating between the other clinics as needed. Another difference is that The Joint employs Wellness Coordinators, and those individuals are led by The Joint’s Director of Operations, Kristina Lampley. Lampley moved to the area earlier this year, but she worked for The Joint location in Rockport, Illinois, for over two years. “When I was deciding on a career, I knew I wanted it to be in the holistic health care field. I had suffered several serious injuries due to an auto accident in my teens, and it wakes you up to just how important it is for each of us to maintain the best health possible, naturally,” Lampley stated. “The Joint’s affordability, convenience and commitment to our patients make our services accessible to everyone. I believe in this method of natural health maintenance, and I love helping people feel better without the use of drugs or surgery,” she said. “I absolutely love what I do, and appreciate this fantastic weather and all the outdoor activities that Southeast Tennessee offers.” Currently open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until

Dr. Cody giving an adjustment to a patient.

The Joint offers several plans to suit your lifestyle, your schedule and your budget. “One of the best things about The Joint is that, once you’ve joined, you can go to any of the clinics anywhere in the nation. Just flash your key tag, and you’re in!” Dr. Cody stated. One member came into the Cleveland clinic around Christmas last year. She was in town visiting her mother and had done something to her neck. She came into the clinic, scanned her key tag and was adjusted, just like at her “home” clinic. She shared with the staff that she had been a member of The Joint for several years and that she joined in California. Her job took her to Washington, D.C., where she continued her Joint membership. Now living in Thailand, where unfortunately there is no Joint, she was thrilled to learn that there was a Joint in Cleveland, Tennessee. “After your initial exam and consultation, we can get you in, adjusted, and on with your day in about ten or fifteen minutes. Just swing by any of our clinics when it is convenient for you and discover the difference The Joint can make in the quality of your overall health and wellness,” Dr. Cody concluded. “We are almost always open,” he said with a smile.

7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., The Joint Chiropractic opened its Paul Huff Parkway clinic in Cleveland in August 2020. There are two other clinic locations (Hixson and NorthShore) with a fourth scheduled to open soon on Gunbarrel at Hamilton Place, and a fifth and sixth slated to open in Northwest Georgia.

James was an apostle to the Jewish people in the same way that Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles. However, after Acts 15:13, James is mentioned one other time (see Acts 21:18). James is playing an important role and it is often overlooked. He, like many others, was an unsung hero of the New Testament Church. In my opinion, Peter may have been the rock that Christ used to help build the Church, but James was the glue that helped to hold the Church together—after the death of Stephen and the scattering of the Church. The book of James gives the reader a glimpse into the teaching, doctrine, and character that kept the

We are always in such a rush. Everywhere you look people are trying to get somewhere but always end up waiting. Time is what we all want the most but we can use it in the worst ways. There are things in our life that we make time for such as going to work, spending time with family, or going on vacation. Time is something that we must make a priority, especially for the things that matter the most in our lives. When we stop to think about it, time is the longest distance between two places. We must not waste the time that we have. There are so many things that we can accomplish with the amount of time given to us each day. A Tale of Two Kings he Book of Judges recollects “when there was no king in Israel each person did what was right in their own eyes” (17:6, Ch 19, 21:25). Even when there were rulers in the divided monarchy, most were unfaithful; of the thirty-nine kings in Israel and Judah (1 & 2 Kings), only eight did right in the eyes of the Lord. One such good leader was Hezekiah. This Davidic descendent reigned over the southern kingdom of Judah. The northern realm of Israel had succumbed to Assyrian conquest, and now, the foreign menace threatened Jerusalem (Isaiah 36:1). Sennacherib sent his chief officer, the Rabshakeh, to Hezekiah’s envoy with a demand of surrender (36:2-20). He boldly attempts to shake Judah’s confidence by showing off his nation’s superior military might (36:4-6). As Sennacherib’s mouthpiece, he relays his king’s arrogance by mocking faith in twisting words (36:7, 10) and subsequently claiming the Lord is powerless (36:14-20). The taunts demean the Lord as no more able to deliver than any other god (36:19). Wisely, Hezekiah had instructed his representatives to remain silent, “not casting pearls before swine.” In humility, they report back (36:21-22), and the news they bear drives Hezekiah to prayer (37:1). Judah’s king sends word to God’s prophet (37:2-5), and God foretells the Assyrian leader’s demise (37:6-7). Providentially, the political winds shift. The Rabshakeh returns to find his king engaged in a skirmish, distracting Assyrian forces from attacking Jerusalem (37:8-13). Messengers deliver Assyrian insult to Hezekiah regarding their unfinished business (37:9-13), and the enemy departs. Hezekiah receives their message, reads it, and returns to prayer (37:14). He praises the majesty of God, affirming the Lord’s sovereignty (37:16). The false accusations of the adversary are neutralized, acknowledging the Lord as the

52 // September 2021

God of all gods. Judah’s king asks that God be keenly aware of the enemy’s irreverence (37:17-19); they have impugned the Lord of all lords. His concluding petition is to rescue his nation, blessing all kingdoms of the earth with the knowledge that there is but one God (37:20). God’s response to Hezekiah’s prayer comes through His inspired messenger, Isaiah (37:21-35). Sennacherib’s arrogance in verbally attacking the Holy One of Israel will not go unanswered. Sennacherib trusted his military prowess without considering the true strength of God the Creator! The Lord will stifle Sennacherib’s feeble efforts at regional domination, and Jerusalem, the intended war-trophy, will endure—God Himself defending the city! With that, the enemy army is miraculously vanquished (37:36). Assyria’s king returns to his homeland emptyhanded. Tragically, Sennacherib, a foreign monarch, is given to empty idol worship, and in the house of his false god, he lost his life when betrayed by his sons (37:37-38). Sennacherib’s god did not protect him. In contrast to Hezekiah’s humility, Sennacherib’s blasphemy left him spiritually bankrupt, deprived of political victory, and alone in death—it had cost him everything. The would-be conqueror is conquered. Two kings, two choices, two outcomes. How each king acts and worships in the narrative portrays options, each with consequences. Humility or arrogance, trust in God or self-reliance, and worship that is genuine or misguided? Through the stories of two kings, the antithetical ways of life and death are linked to faith and set before readers. The account poses choices for how we will govern our lives, inferring, if it were your name in the story, which example would you want as your resume?
