The always wild action of pro wrestling returns to the area as WWE presents “Monday Night RAW” at The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Monday, November 25 at 7:30 pm. Tickets begin at $20 and are on sale now; they're available at the Coliseum box office, Ticketmaster.com, and charge by phone at (800) 745-3000. This appearance by WWE takes place the day after its “Survivor Series” pay-perview extravaganza, and marks the first time that “Monday Night RAW” has appeared in Long Island in two years. arely have we been this disappointed: After our first foray into one of the heavily hyped local Smashburger locations in Long Island, all we can say is: Even our local bowling alley makes a better hamburger. Given the glut of area burgerbased restaurant chains – some absolutely great (Shake Shack, Five Guys) some jejune (Red Robin, Dairy Queen), and some low rent (think Burger King and their ilk), we can't imagine food this greasy, tasteless, and typical making any sort of inroads in our hard-to-please area burger culture. They could have called this place Greaseburger, Oilburger, or Blandburger, because these supposedly newfangled burgers are anything but a smash. Somehow, the Denver-based Smashburger chain became absolutely huge during the past few years on the west coast, and now has been creeping up the east coast like an unwanted tropical storm. First, a bunch of locations set foot in New Jersey and Pennsylvania; now, with its recent opening in New Hyde Park, it makes four Smashburger outlets in Long Island (the others are in Wantagh, Port Jefferson, and

During our visit at the admittedly friendly, clean, and eyepleasing new location in New Hyde Park, we chose the chain's signature “Classic Smashburger.” Right from the first the first bite, all we could taste was grease-flavoried oil, whatever is in the “Smash sauce,” and the condiments; there wasn't a hint of beef flavor whatsoever – the

patty could have been a wet paperback book for all it mattered. After finishing, we stared at the thick layer of grease at the bottom of our serving bowl, nostalgic for our last wait in line at Shake Shack. Our companion chose the supposedly healthier avocado club sandwich (barely any avocado to speak of), along with an even supposedly healthier side dish choice, “Veggie Frites,” dubbed as “flash fried carrot sticks and green beans” on the menu. So since when does “flash fried” mean a quarter inch of grease left on the plate? Apparently, the word “smash” means “grease” in Denver – as we left, even the exit door was coated with greasy smattering of thick, oily fingerprints – which came from the couple next to us that had ordered take-out. Yes – the greasy food soaked through their bags, onto their hands, and then everywhere they touched. The fingerprints, as in most crimes, were key: As a meal, this stuff really should be outlawed. During our visit, we watched some corporate types (some wore company badges) that seemed to be congratulating each other; apparently, its opening went well. New area businesses creating new jobs? Fantastic. The food at Smashburger? We'd tell you more, but our greasy fingers keep slipping

Glasgow native Stewart began his career playing guitar in Tony Blackburn’s band The Sabres, and moved from there to the London folk club scene. Starring Danny Trejo, Carlos Estevez (Charlie Sheen), Sofia Vergara, Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mel Gibson Directed and written by Robert Rodriguez Open Road Once again – though no one is fessing up to it – we consider Robert Rodriguez’ latest bombs/ babes/bullets extravaganza a clear homage to the legendary B-action film director and producer Andy Sidaris, who used to cast a bevy of hunky actors and Playboy and Penthouse models as the stars of his action-packed 1980s and 1990s films. In those drive-in favorites, the good guys always won and the bad guys not only lost, but found their justified demises through the most violent and gruesome ways possible. Danny Trejo appeared briefly in one of Sidaris’ better movies (Guns); the portly director’s style was sheer formula, but it was a colorful and entertaining one. Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, truth be told, has seemingly picked up Sidaris’ mojo; this is essentially just more of the same as 2010’s Machete. However, it’s most of the same best moments of the original film – and it must be noted that it’s hard to think of another movie where such a huge array of pulchritudinous actresses (Heard, Gaga, Alba, Vega, Vergara, Rodriguez, and Hudgens) are willing to portray either “hot babe with guns,” or “simply hot under-dressed babe.” Rodriguez’ stars know this is all tongue-in-cheek, so they’re not afraid to be exploitation queens for a day. B-movies have never looked quite this good – even Sidaris’ films, where his bevy of semi-clad heroines and villians included models such as Cynthia Brimhall, Dona

Speir, Hope Marie Carlton, Julie Strain, Julie Smith, Susan Kiger, and many more. There is just so much to have fun with here for those willing to check their brains at the box office: Trejo’s rugged Machete, his face bearing the scars of 1,000 sins, is the type of anti-hero that the film world has always dreamed of; Charlie Sheen, billed here as Carlos Estevez, is a stone hoot as a the President (imagine that), as is the muchmailigned Mel Gibson as as an evil mastermind who is crazier than an outhouse rat; a fake trailer for the “next” Machete film: Machete Kills Again ... In Space; and, as you might have seen in the trailers, Vergara’s machine gun bra, which makes her deadly in two different ways. And of course, there are more bashings, crashings,

shootings, explosions, bombs, babes, bullets, and corny one-liners than you’ll find in any 10 action films. Think of this as the original Michete on steroids – the most over-the-top elements of the first film are repeated constantly, but with totally edifying results. It’s as if Rodriguez is telling his grindhouse-hunrgy audience: “I know what you want, and boy, am I gonna give it to you.” Films like Michete Kills are never going to be Oscar bait, but if you’re not the offendable type, we dare you to see this and not have an empty-headed good time – just like you did at the old 42nd Street theaters in New York City or at country drive-ins. That’s the whole idea in the first place. – Bob Smith

Despite their objections, Ray loves a lucrative challenge and accepts the terms. It doesn’t take long for Breslin to realize that he has been set up; he’s drugged and put on an airplane. When he comes to, he finds himself “welcomed” by a sadistic warden, Hobbes (Caviezel), who knows Ray’s real identity and his purpose for being there, but he is being compensated handsomely by an unnamed party that wants him to rot there for the rest of his life. Breslin quickly finds that he has an ally in fellow prisoner Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger). The strong but cerebral Rottmayer is not a dangerous criminal, but rather a political prisoner. Escape Plan is in many ways is an homage to the many prison films that have come before it. Caviezel, who always plays characters who are economical with their words, makes the steely Hobbes a character you love to hate. What is somewhat surprising is the rather liberal bent of the film, since both Stallone and Schwarzenegger are well-known Republicans, although neither man

would probably be welcomed at a Tea Party rally. The prison in the film that houses their characters is run by private industry and is not even on the government grid because it is (spoiler alert!) located on a ship in international waters. Who would have thought that two of Hollywood’s longtime tough guys would be warning about the dangers of privatizing prisons? The major flaw here is that there are too many plot twists that attempt to get untangled in the final minutes that seem to have been employed as afterthoughts by the screenwriters. Nonetheless, the action is first rate, and the film’s running time passes enjoyably. While stuntmen are employed, both Stallone and Schwarzenegger handled a good deal of the heavy lifting; it was reported that Sly needed 70 stitches to patch up a gash in his foot during the shooting. Escape Plan is one of the better cinematic surprises of the year. – Lloyd Carroll

Es cape P lan Starring Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jim Caviezel Directed by Mikael Hafstrom Summit Entertainment This film marks the first time that veteran action film actors Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have teamed up. If Escape Plan were released 25 years ago, it would have been a colossal entertainment event, and Sly and Arnie would have had their faces on the covers of all the gossip magazines. In 2013, however, the media reaction was far more muted; it bordered on a collective shrug. Consider: Escape Plan was released through Summit Entertainment, a subsidiary of Lionsgate Films. Granted, ageism is an old story in the entertainment industry; both stars are over 65. Both have also made their share of awful films. It was easy to set the bar low before seeing Escape Plan – but it’s a far better film than what could have been reasonably expected. Ray Breslin (Stallone) is an outside consultant whose talent is to find the flaws in even the most secure of prisons.The work is not glamorous, but it’s lucrative as Ray’s modus operandi is to go undercover as a prisoner and find imperfections, be it from prison guards whose routines are too predictable to flaws in the physical structures of the cellblocks; afterwards, he escapes. A mysterious woman claiming to be from a secret government agency arrives at Ray’s posh office with a check for $5 million if he’ll agree to test a top-secret facility. Because of the alleged sensitive nature of the matter, Ray will not allowed to be traced by his support team, Abby (Amy Ryan) and Hush (Curtis “Fifty Cent” Jackson).

fter the events of the past couple of months, one thing is for certain in the pop music arena at this writing: The world belongs to Miley Cyrus, and the rest of us just live in it. After her appearances at the MTV Video Music Awards and hosting “Saturday Night Live” – not to mention her ultrarevealing (okay, she gets naked) video for her mega-hit “Wrecking Ball” – one might have been prompted to think that young Ms. Cyrus might have become, for lack of a better term, overexposed. Not to worry; the tongue-wagging, crotch-grabbling pop singer debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with her new album release, Bangerz, selling 270,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Counting her soundtrack albums as the Disney character Hannah Montana, this is Cyrus’ fifth #1 album. She topped the list with the Disney Channel TV series' first soundtrack in 2006, as well as its big-screen film adaptation soundtrack

Carmelo he classic Clash hit Anthony “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” could be the New York Knicks theme song, as media and fans will undoubtedly be reading tea leaves for the latest signs as to whether star forward Carmelo Anthony will remain in New York or seek the Hollywood life when he becomes a free agent on July 1, 2014. Knicks head coach Mike Woodson clearly does not want to live through the hell that former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown endured four years ago when LeBron James toyed with Cleveland fans, the media, and the entire Cavs organization during his walk year. The Brooklyn Nets were undoubtedly the NBA champions of the off-season, as evidenced by the recent Sports Illustrated cover story that featured the team’s expected starting lineup and new head coach Jason Kidd – but to quote the noted wrestling philosopher Ric Flair: “To be the best, you have to beat the best.” The Nets have lost 17 straight games to the Miami Heat. At the Nets’ media day last month, center Brook Lopez, the longest tenured member of the team, conceded that his team has to beat James, Dwyane Wade, and company at least once this season to have any credibility going into the post-season.

SI also had a terrific piece on longtime Nets announcer Ian Eagle, who finally is getting the recognition he deserves for being one of the best play-by-play broadcasters working today. Eagle must have made a Faustian bargain not only for his broadcasting skills, but also for his perennial youthful appearance; he still looks as if he just graduated from Forest Hills High School, which he did more than 25 years ago. Dorian Gray would be jealous. While on the topic of great sports air personalities, Bill Mazer passed away last month at the age of 92. He was renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of sports trivia which, went beyond idiot savant status. He hosted the first regularly scheduled radio sports call-in show back on the old WNBC-AM in March 1964. Eight years later, he would help pioneer the first elongated Sunday night local television sports wrap-up show, “Sports Extra” on Channel 5. The format is now standard in every TV market across the country. The surprising success of the bearded Boston Red Sox must be a mixed blessing for the world’s largest shaving goods company, Gillette, which is also based in Beantown. Better Rolling: There's no question about it: The question I get asked the most as author of this column is “When is the PBA coming back on TV?” I'm happy to report that not only will there be an expanded season this year between the PBA's ESPN telecasts and additional Xtra Frame streaming events, but that ESPN has installed Mike Jakubowski, an incredibly learned gentleman who practically lives and breathes the sport, as lead announcer. Kind of beats “hambones” and the transparent on-air lack of bowling knowledge from previous play-by-play men, doesn't it? "I'm honored to represent the Professional Bowlers Association and fans of pro bowling alongside (color commentator) Randy Pedersen," said Jakubowski, a Milwaukee native who made his mark as host for both Xtra Frame and PBA summer events. Jakubowski is about as knowledgeable about bowling as anyone I've met. He's not a good choice – he's an outrageously great choice to take over the lead seat on PBA programming. Here’s hoping this assignment marks a new era in PBA coverage for the all-sports network. Starting Sunday, December 1 at 1 pm, ESPN will televise seven two-hour events from the current World Series of Bowling, beginning with the PBA Cheetah Championship and running consecutive Sundays through January 12, according to the PBA's Jerry Schneider. In all, ESPN will air 36 hours of PBA action through April 13 – up from 29.5 hours in 2013 – as part of

Phoenix. ESPN finally got around to showing Big Shot, Kevin Connolly’s documentary on fraudulent former Islanders owner John Spano; it debuted in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. Connolly, who grew up a huge New York Islanders fan in Patchogue, is best known for his co-starring role on HBO’s “Entourage.” He was able to coax Spano into reminiscing about how he was able to purchase the team in 1996 with very little of his own money by creating fictitious financial statements that were audited by hardly anyone. reminds one of Harold Hill, the lovable con artist in “The Music Man.” It has been a long time since anyone cared about boxing’s heavyweight division, which used to be the only one that most sports fans followed. Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions has signed hulking, 6'7'’ Deontay Wilder – who hails from Crimson Tide territory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama – in the hopes that he will become the 21st Century’s answer to Mike Tyson. If Deontay can box as well as he can handle a microphone, based on what I saw at a press conference at B.B. King’s, he will be a champion. Goldstar, a company which sells discounted tickets to a variety of events on the Internet, is getting more involved with sporting events as it will be offering 50 percent-off tickets to selected games from all major markets. It also recently launched a smartphone app that lets you sit near your friends if they bought a ticket for an event before you did. Woodbury-based Arizona Beverage Company, best known for its varieties of iced tea, is invading Dr. Brown territory with its line of Shaq Sodas that features the mug of Shaquille O’Neal on its cans. Arizona continues to offer Arnold Palmer iced tea/lemonade combos as well. Considering that it doesn’t have a contract with any of the major sports teams or the Big East any longer, SNY should do a better job showcasing local college basketball teams. Its winter broadcast list consists of random NCAA games that appeared to have been chosen by throwing a dart at an NCAA schedule; only Fordham seems to be getting any constant coverage. It would be nice if SNY could devote a little time to Columbia and Hofstra, as well as such Northeast Conference teams as

LIU, St. Francis, and Wagner. SNY’s new “Covino & Rich” program at 6 pm comes off as low budget and haphazard, stuff that you’d expect on cable public access channels.

The GLBT Festival of Long Island began as a fundraiser for the Community House of Long Island (CHOLI), the first GLBT center on Long Island. As a result, the Film Festival has had strong roots in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community since its inception. It has garnered numerous awards as the premiere area GLBT entertainment or community event over the years. The center is gone now, but the film festival is still going strong, and the mission of

Starring Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton, James Badge Dale Written and directed by Peter Landesman The events of September 11, 2001 will in all likelihood be the cataclysmic historic event that will stay etched in one’s mind for anyone who is 18 and over. The whole world irreversibly changed for the worse that September morning. Ask anyone who is now close to 60 years old (or older, of course) and he or she will tell you that they had that same feeling on the afternoon of November 22, 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. The upcoming 50th anniversary of that tragedy undoubtedly was the impetus of the new film, Parkland, which was the hospital where John Kennedy was rushed to after being shot assumably by Lee Harvey Oswald. Ironically, Oswald would wind up there as well two days later after being fatally shot by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby. Screenwriter and director Peter Landesman wisely keeps the focus on the chaos the events of Friday, November 22 right up to JFK’s funeral the following Monday. He wisely eschews the conspiracy theories that were espoused in Oliver Stone’s 1991 film JFK, and instead concentrates on how the events affected of ordinary people who happened to find themselves on the front lines of history. Rather than open the film with traditional opening credits, Landesman takes a cinema verite approach by eavesdropping on the emergency room of Parkland Hospital on what seems to be a quiet morning as we see a sleepy resident, Dr. Jim Carrico (Zac Efron) and head nurse Doris Nelson (Marcia Gay Harden) get ready for duty. In what will seem similar to a “Twilight Zone” episode, they will find their ordinary lives upended forever in a few hours as they will try against poor odds to save the life of the most important man in the world at the time. Abraham Zapruder (Giamatti) is a 58-year-old

Dallas garment manufacturer who lets his office take an early lunch break so that they can all watch the President in his motorcade come by nearby Dealey Plaza. Zapruder is a proud American who is eternally grateful to the United States for allowing his parents and his entire family to emigrate here and avoid certain death from anti-Semitic pogroms in the USSR. He is also a huge Kennedy supporter, which put him in a minority in Dallas at the time. Zapruder was also a photography buff who couldn’t wait to use his new Bell & Howell so that he could have a keepsake of JFK’s trip to his hometown. In spite of what sounded like firecrackers and screams, he had the presence of mind to keep filming the motorcade as it sped away from Dealey Plaza. Zapruder immediately knew that he had a tape of history that no one else did. It did not take long for the FBI to realize that as well. To his credit, he cooperated with the federal authorities. He also realized that he would no longer have a normal life, and that is why Landesman claims that he sold the frames from his film to Life Magazine for a hefty price as a way of compensating him and his

helping to create a sense of togetherness for the Long Island GLBT community and its supporters is still as important as ever. “It is so wonderful to come back to Huntington and see what a warm and accepting atmosphere has been created for GLBT people here on Long Island. It makes the transition so much easier,” said Melanie Clark, who recently returned to Long Island, at a recent “Out At The Movies” program. Some of the features and shorts to be presented at this year's Film Festival include such lauded titles as Bridegroom, Geography Club, Out In The Dark, Route Of Acceptance, The Rugby Player, Submerge, Reaching For The Moon, The Perfect Wedding, and many more heralded new and recent full-length and short films.

family for their loss of anonymity. No one was more tortured about the events in Dallas that day than Forrest Sorells (Thornton), who headed up the Secret Service’s Dallas office. It is easy to understand his anguish as he recounts how he never lost his man in 30 years of being on the job, and how he snaps when he sees the Zapruder film for the first time. The character who we surprisingly feel for is Robert Oswald (James Bade Dale), the older brother of Lee Harvey Oswal (Jeremy Strong). Robert is a hardworking family man who knows that his brother is a wacko, but certainly not to the extent that he would come to discover along with the rest of the world. He never doubts for a minute that Lee was the triggerman, but he still visits him in his Dallas jail cell to inform him that he will try to find a lawyer for him. Lee appears to be insane as he tells Robert how worried he is that his daughter needs new shoes. “You are being charged with killing the president of the United States and you are talking about your daughter’s shoes! What about the kind of life that they are going to have now?” Robert also has to deal with a calculating, mentally unhinged mother (Jacki Weaver) who tells the world that Lee is a secret agent for the CIA. When JFK is killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, her first reaction was to think of the money that she can make by writing a book. At that point, one can read Robert’s face and can tell that he would love to strangle her if it weren’t a crime. He is an ordinary guy trapped in an extraordinary situation. Peter Landesman nicely blends in news footage of the events of those four long days in November a half-century ago with a taut script that comes in at a crisp 93 minutes. Seeing the legendary news anchors Walter Cronkite and David Brinkley as well as terrific and sadly forgotten journalists such as Bill Ryan and Tom Petit will bring back memories for many older viewers. Parkland is an engrossing film and a great way for those under 55 to understand why JFK’s death really was the end of America’s innocence. The “network's” coverage of MLB playoffs was its usual disaster, with bad camera angles (and missing plays entirely), focusing in on mascots and third base coaches at inappropriate times, sound and video glitches, the comic book announcing style of Ernie Johnson, you name it. And who would have ever guessed that MLB Network's Billy Ripken would turn out to be a far superior baseball analyst than his Hall Of Fame brother, Cal Ripken Jr. – so guess who was in the TBS booth? … The 2011 Playboy Playmate of the Year, Claire Sinclair, is now the star of her own superhero comic book, Wonderous: The Adventures Of Claire Sinclair, now a best-seller at Amazon.com. It's a straight superhero yarn, despite its pulchritudinous title character; the artwork by Rick Burchett is simply spectacular. In fact, Lion Forge does a great job

Still, it's good to see cast members such as the brilliant Kate McKinnon and the rapidly improving Jay Pharoah getting more air time; Cecily Strong has Katherine blended in seamlessly at Webb For Carls Jr. the “Update” desk … The WWE's recent focus on domineering authority figures – this time, it's HHH and his wife, Stephanie McMahon – resulted in USA Network's “WWE Monday Night Raw” garnering poor ratings for a spell – yet, in typical WWE fashion, its continues to beat the veritable dead horse of a

storyline. Seems wrestling fans have been there, done that (“villainous” authority figures have already been portrayed by Eric Bischoff, Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, Vickie Guerrero, etc.). Note to WWE writers: Nobody ever paid a dime to see a guy in a suit bullying the help or enforcing rules … The 2013/2014 official TV “bombs” list has already claimed such stinkers as “We Are Men” (one episode and out!) and “Lucky 7,” but there are rumors that as many as a dozen more shows may be headed for the chopping block as well ... A new version of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys, featuring former “Taxi” stars Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch, is knocking them dead in Los Angeles and could eventually land on Broadway … Old-Timer's Daze: Nick At Nite added “The New Adventures Of Old Christine” to its lineup; “Fantasy Island” returns in December on the new, reformatted Cozi TV, which joins Antenna TV and MeTV as havens for old TV series … Speaking of Cozi, we recently caught an old edition of “Lassie” and watched straight through to the end – and, of course, the end theme not only made us choke up, but made a pair of children in the room cry as well. The song is a miracle, perhaps the most evil thing ever perpetrated by a TV network for reasons that even psychologists can't understand … Katherine Webb put to rest the Brent Musberger “controversy” by appearing in a Carl's Jr. ad so over-the-top steamy it makes previous Carl's ads look understated. So much for the faux “uproar.”

As I sit here in class I can honestly think of no better way to spend my time than writing this article. In the battle of synthetic biology vs. EDM, I would have to say EDM wins hands down. Anyways, there’s been a lot of stuff going on in the EDM world in the last month and I’m here to let you know about it. DVBBS is teaming up with Like Mike and Dimitri Vegas and bringing you a new single, “Stampede,” which will be out on Beatport on November 18. his new Wild Out EP. It’s a collection of diverse tracks that showcase Borgore as a songwriter and his ability to move between genres. If you’ve been looking to let out some steam or go crazy at a live show, then I have some good news for you, New York City: At Pacha, we’ve got Madeon coming on November 9, Victor Calderone on November 16, Danny Tenaglia on November 27, and Quintino on December 6. And don’t forget to plan ahead and get your tickets for Thomas Gold on New Years Eve. In addition, Pacha is also running some late December and New Year’s shows at Pier 94. On December 27, Zedd will be stopping by Pier 94, followed up by Hardwell the next night at the same venue. And then to top it off, Alesso will be at Pier 94 for New Year’s Eve. the band formed in the late 90s, when co-founder Tom Higgenson was still in high school, and the T’s had several independent releases already to their credit even before “Hey There Delilah” became an international sensation and cultural touchstone in 2007. But as far as the Plain White T’s are concerned, they’re just entering their sense-of-wonder years. Higgenson recalled the process in making Wonders in pre-release interviews as that disc was coming out. Higgenson had the album title and concept come to him in a place not usually associated with tender innocence: Las Vegas. It was there, on a Valentines Day 2009 visit, that he was bowled over by a Cirque du Soleil show, O,

and wondered if it would be possible to capture the same anything-can-happen spirit on record. “The entire show has pirate ships, clowns and carousel horses coming up and going back into the pool, and at one point there’s a piano that comes up out of the water, and it was really epic,” he says. “I just loved it, and it gave me that feeling of being a kid and seeing Goonies for the first time, or Indiana Jones — so adventurous and imaginative and different. I left there wanting to make an album that gave people that same feeling.” Parachute is from Charlottesville, Virginia and ranks as one of the top pop bands on the road this year. Echo Hill Namaste (EP) Independent

Who: Echo Hill is a totally unapologetic band of modern rockers that ranks among the area's hottest new acts. Band members include guitarists Alex Laudani, lead vocalist Monique Teichert, bassist Dylan Coates, and drummer Keith Miller. This, their most recent four-song EP, was recorded at Rogue Studios in Hicksville, and was produced, mixed, and mastered by Brad Franklin with engineering by Pablo Papasidero. We're absolutely floored by this band and their completely original take on modern rock; they manage to be accessible and melodic while rocking the tiles off the floor. he ever-present, steadfast pop/rock star Bill Popp – the longtime leader of Bill Popp & The Tapes – celebrated his 60th birthday on June 5 at a concert event at The R-Bar in New York City, the city where Popp and his band have plied their trade for decades. “To me, the best birthday gift I could ever get was seeing all those people rocking out to the band and having a great time,” said Popp. Long before Popp received notice in virtually every local publication you can think of (including the one you are holding in your hands), he was like any other kid from Queens who was bitten by the rock & roll bug. Born on June 5, 1953, he attended Saint Fidelis, where in the second grade he joined the choir and discovered he could sing. In 1964, Pop discovered The Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and his life (and schooling) was never the same. Popp went from being a somewhat behaved choirboy to driving the nuns crazy with his antics.

Popp Go The Milestones

In June 1966, Popp received a drum set for his 13 th birthday – and shortly thereafter, defiantly grew his hair and wore Beatle boots to school, much to the dismay of his principal. In lieu of expulsion, Popp was transferred to the PS 194 Annex in November of that year. In his ninth year at the Annex, Popp convinced his English teacher to accept a poem for his homework. It was Popp's first bruth with writing, and it worked. In 1966, Popp's mother, Cecilia (who played

piano by ear in her youth), attempted to rekindle her passion for the instrument after receiving a piano for Christmas from Bill's father, George, and sister, Judy. Unfortunately, whenever Cecilia attempted to play, her arms and hands swelled with pain, which he attributed to drugs she was taking to battle cancer. The disease had plagued her since 1963, and it eventually took her life in August 1978. Cecilia's unplayed and somewhat out-of-tune piano laid silent, collecting dust until the spring of 1969. It was then when a friend taught Bill Popp to play The Beatles' “Hey Jude,” and his interest was sparked. He took a crack at writing a song for a rejected love, naively thinking it would woo her back. It didn't, but it inspired Popp to continue writing songs. When in the 10th grade, Popp was talked into joining a Led Zeppelin cover band. Not knowing

anything but Beatles beats, he lasted just two rehearsals and was asked to leave. Feeling limited as a drummer, Popp turned his focus back to songwriting and piano – and a year later, the same two musicians who had dumped him as a drumme were now backing him on his songs. After graduating in 1972, Popp was forced to take a minimum wage job as a plumber's helper; today, he still makes his living as a plumber for New York City Parks And Recreation – but his passion for music has never flinched. Through the 1970s, Popp showcased as a solo act, played in cover bands, and had a short-lived original band called The Poppsickle. By 1981, he had formed the band he still performs with today called The Tapes, now better known as Bill Popp & The Tapes. Thirty-two years and counting, the band remains a fixture in the New York City music scene, and Popp is recognized as one of the area's most prolific songwriters, having won critical acclaim in tri-state and national publications. Today, with two singles and five albums under his belt (and a sixth album on the way), all released on his own label, 121st Street Records, Popp just keeps right on going. For more: billpopp.com. Janis Siegel: Making A Transfer To ‘Night Songs’

Siegel calls “Marie” by Randy Newman the “ultimate drunken love song,” and “Midnight Sun” is “arguably, one of the top 10 greatest songs ever written.” The album also includes “Lover” (made famous by Peggy Lee), and “You’re Mine, You,” an R&B take on Chet Baker’s version. In 1993, she received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee School of Music, and in 1999, were among the first class of inductees into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

Guitar Legend Jeff Healey: A New Live Album

Eagle Records has released Live From NYC by The Jeff Healey Band in both CD and downloads. The album continues Eagle’s series of gems drawn from the vaults of the history-making group. Recorded at the long-lamented Bottom Line in New York City on December 13, 1988, this early show by Healey’s band follows the release of their debut album, See The Light. Several tracks from that album are included, along with classic covers such as ZZ Top’s “Blue Jean Blues” and Cream’s “White Room.” Healey had a unique style and presence that was clearly already well developed at this early stage in his career, which Live From NYC captures beautifully. Having lost his sight at the age of one, he crafted himself into a master guitarist, championing the lap pedal-steel style. Able to deftly traverse genre styles with ease, his soulful vocals and instrumental dexterity won the hearts of blues and blues-rock fans worldwide. An incredible talent gone too soon (he died in 2008), Healey is considered one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time. He also is remembered for appearing as a musician in the 1989 over-the-top action film “Road House” that starred Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott, Kelly Lynch, Ben Gazzara, and Red West. Eagle Rock Entertainment has also re-issued The Jeff Healey Band’s Get Me Some and House On Fire, and has released Live At Grossman’s 1994 CD and Full Circle – The Live Anthology boxed set. Healey’s Jazz Wizards also recorded for Stony Plain Records.

Tradition & Wit Win: David Sedaris Staller Center For The Arts Stony Brook University

uring a period when entertainment industry publications such as Pollstar have reported disappointing attendance at many recent major concerts in the region, we have a quiz for you: Guess which attraction managed to stuff more than 1,000 loyal fans into a completely sold-out show at this magnificent showplace for a performance that promised only a lone figure … reading? From a podium, no less? David Sedaris, who clearly and deservedly ranks alongside such classic American humorists such as Jean Shepherd, Harry Shearer, and James Thurber, made a tour stop on October 20 at Staller Center to promote his latest book, the New York Times best seller Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls. For those who don't know, the Binghamton-born Sidaris – his sister is the famed comic actress Amy Sedaris – is revered not only for his numerous best-selling books and original plays, but also for his appearances on such programs as NPR's “This American Life” and David Letterman's late night shows over the past two decades. Sedaris quite simply, is one of the funniest humor writers on the planet; his offbeat musings, usually delivered while standing

behind a woodend podium such as the one he used this night (sporting a generic “Stony Brook University” logo) have earned him legions of fans of all ages. This particular performance of about 95 minutes showed that the traditional art of great humor writing is still a skill that matters, as the fans in attendance ranged from young teens through Stony Brook students to grizzled seniors. The startingly disparate crowd sat in rapt attention as the author read from several of his classic essays as well as from Owl, which still ranks high on the sales lists. Many stories and anecdotes drew huge gales of laughter (colonosopies, anyone?), and his light delivery spoke volumes about his friendly yet wacky demeanor. Both before and after the readings, Sedaris signed autographs for fans at the theater’s entrance. Sedaris' readings included notes from his travels, family remembrances, and thoughts on odd people he has met, not unlike most humorists – but, refreshingly, there isn't any sort of underlying or pretentious “message” to his work; taken at face value, a funny story is its own reward. That's all there is to this brilliant, quirky literary giant – and that's more than enough.

The first single, “Roar,” broke all sorts of sales records for iTunes and radio airplay, and everyone in the industry swears that there is not one weak track on the album, and that every one of them is a potential hit single. It sounds like hype, but Perry's career has moved in this direction since the first day this version of her career kicked in (a far cry from her Christian music early days). We've noted it before, and this holiday season will make it more obvious than ever: Women are the frontrunners in the world of pop music, a complete reversal from the days of the 50s, 60s, and 70s when males ruled the roost, and only a certain few females squeezed into the top ranks. Elton Film: The glam Tom Hardy (Bane in the most recent Batman film) will portray Elton John in a new movie, Rocketman, a biography of the legendary Yellow Brick Roadster. It will interesting to see how far

things delve into Elton's personal life and how much will be devoted to the music, performances, and development of his image. The film about Queen front man Freddie Mercury bit the dust as a result of differing opinions regarding how much personal life versus how much of the actual rock & roll spectacle; Queen band members wound up pulling the plug on the entire project. I would imagine that John will have complete control over what is in the film and what isn't. It's one more pop culture film to look forward to – and I'm also quite anxious to see Clint Eastwood's directing job on Jersey Boys, the film adaptation of the Broadway musical about Frankie Valli &The Four Seasons.

YouTube, I Tube: YouTube has entered the music world by teaming up with its owner, Google, to launch a subscription music service, drawing on the heavy catalog of music that Google already has rights to. This particular project will have a running head start since so many people head to YouTube for a variety of reasons, so we don't have to go and find this, we're already there. They just have to hit you over the head with an in-house ad for this music channel when you show up looking for the “cat in a mask robs a bank” video clip. It's a smart move.
