Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie Directed by Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese has always been fascinated by organized crime. His latest saga is free of bullets, but he makes it clear that the world of white collar crime can be of far higher economic stakes than that of the gangster world. “The Wolf Of Wall Street” was a moniker that Forbes Magazine bestowed upon Jordan Belfort when he was making the firm the founded with buddy Daniel Porush (renamed in the film as Donny Azoff and portrayed by Hill), Stratton Oakmont, into the largest over-the-counter brokerage house in the country. The film opens in the fall of 1987 with a young Belfort (DiCaprio) eagerly looking forward to get his foot into the door at a fictitious Manhattan investment firm. His mentor is fast-talking Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey), who takes him to lunch on his first day and gives one of the most memorable pep talks in movie history, which is by far the highlight of the film. Unfortunately, “Black Monday” took place on October 19, 1987 when the New York Stock Exchange lost 508 points, a major percentage back then. Belfort’s firm goes belly up, and it appears his dream of becoming a stockbroker is squashed. His wife, Teresa (Cristin Miloti), spots an ad saying that it is hiring brokers. It turns out to be a “boiler room” operation in Long Island, where low-rent guys are selling penny stocks. Jordan knows little about the world of “thinly capitalized” corporations, but his ears perk up when he hears that commissions can be 50 percent of the revenue that he collects from clients – a lot better than the meager one percent he was earning on the trade of Fortune 500 stocks. All he needs to do is cold call a few folks and work his sales magic. Belfort has the knack for getting people to part with their cash even while they are hemming and hawing. Financial success was certainly a huge motivator for Jordan (the film opens with Belfort telling the audience:

“When I was 26, I made $49 million, which really pissed me off because it was three shy of a million a week”), but the true fun was indulging in wanton excess, whether it be buying the biggest mansion, the longest yacht, the finest cocaine and Quaaludes, or the most sought-after women. He divorces his first wife for Naomi (Robbie), the ultimate trophy wife. Scorsese spends a lot of time filming these indulgences, and it needlessly bloats the film to a three-hour running time. A perversely funny scene is where Jordan and his not-too-bright lieutenant, Donny, are in a conference room seemingly oblivious to the SEC enforcers going through their records while they are more concerned about arranging a dwarf-tossing event. Rob Reiner, who has done more directing than acting since his “All In The Family” days, has a small but meaty role as Jordan’s father, Max. Deep down, he knows that Jordan is involved in insider trading and market manipulation, all federal crimes, but doesn’t say anything because he is thrilled that his kid is not living the mundane middle class life that has

always been his anonymous existence. Scorsese is a native New Yorker, and he makes good use of Queens scenery here. Jordan meets Donny while he is having a bite at The Kaskades Diner, which many area residents will recognize as the iconic Rego Park restaurant The Shalimar Diner – which must be going Hollywood because an episode of CBS’s “Elementary” also was shot there recently. Scorsese also shot a number of exterior scenes in Bayside. It may or may not be conincidental, but Flushing native Jon Favreau and Howard Beach’s inimitable former NYPD detective and now actor Bo Dietl have small roles here as well. DiCaprio is spectacular as Jordan Belfort, and it is worth the price of a movie theater ticket just to watch him. On the other hand, there is much to be disappointed about The Wolf Of Wall Street besides its long running time. Scorsese is known for his original work, yet this film seems similar to other films taking on Wall Street – and not only Oliver Stone’s 1987 Wall Street, which is referenced here. Jordan’s speech where he tells brokers who can’t close that they ought to work in McDonald’s is a pale copy of Alec Baldwin’s memorable gut-kicking speech in Glengarry Glen Ross. The uneasy finale where a drugged-out Jordan and his soon-to-be estranged wife are fighting tooth and nail is right out of Scarface. Belfort serves as a narrator in the film to guide us through the craziness, and even here, he sounds a more than a bit like Ray Liotta in Scorsese’s own Goodfellas. – Lloyd Carroll

Ike he conventional wisdom seems to be Davis that when a new NFL general manager takes over a team, he gets to bring in his own head coach. New York Jets owner Woody Johnson made it clear last winter to incoming general manager John Idzik when he took the GM job that Idzik was stuck with Rex Ryan for all of the 2013 season. After that, he would be free to do what he wanted – but Idzik has shown that he is no dope. Realizing that Johnson is more enamored than ever with Ryan and that both fans and media were pleased with the job that he did in making a Jets team devoid of talent at the various “skills positions” finish with a surprising 8-8 season, he decided to let Ryan come back in 2014 and fulfill the rest of his contract. Johnson would have had to have paid Ryan his full salary had he dismissed him. The other issue is that if Idzik had fired Ryan, who would he have hired – and what guarantee would he have that the team would not go backwards? Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach and current CBS Sports NFL pregame analyst Bill Cowher told me that he has absolutely no interest in returning to the sidelines: “I love what I do now and I am able to enjoy a wide variety of interests that I couldn’t when I was a coach,” he said.

T

“I look and feel better now than I did a decade ago.” Cowher also told me that while he never slept in his office the way that former Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs used to, he said that he was always thinking about the next game. New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin may be a future Hall of Fame selection, but I have to question his common sense for playing any of his starters in the team’s finale against the Washington Redskins. The game was meaningless since both teams had long been eliminated from the playoffs, and the monsoon-like weather made the playing field dangerous. The end result was that QB Eli Manning and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks left with badly sprained ankles, while offensive tackle Will Beatty broke his leg. Ryan took a lot of heat for putting QB Mark Sanchez in a position to be needlessly injured in a Giants-Jets preseason game, but my guess is that Coughlin will hear nary a peep of criticism. One bonus of watching the season-ending Miami Dolphins-Jets game on television was that it marked the last game of Dan Dierdorf’s illustrious broadcasting career. He is an NFL Hall of Famer from his days as an offensive lineman for the St.

LIGBT News: Congratulations to attorney Steve Baum, who won his first Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT) event on December 15 at AMF Wantagh Lanes. Baum, of Commack, rolled three strikes in the final three frames to secure a $1,000 first place victory with a 257 handicap game. Second place went to Dave Soren of Long Beach, who came close to winning the tournament with a double in the 10th frame, but left a 7-10 split in his final shot. Soren, who shot the high series of the tourney with an 802, earned $500 for his fine showing. Third place went to Pac Song of New York City, who was awarded $300. Dexter Sapp of Valley Stream won his overall fourth LIBGT title on December 8 at East Islip Lanes.

Louis Cardinals, and he is certainly a Hall of Fame broadcaster as well; he was intelligently opinionated and educated viewers to the nuances of the NFL without ever being overbearing. In many ways he was the Tim McCarver of football.

I know business is business, but I have to admit that it was bizarre to hear Hess Oil commercials on the Giants’ WFAN pregame show. Leon Hess owned the Jets for more than 30 years, and obviously Hess Oil was synonymous with the Jets. Speaking of WFAN, it was fun to hear Sid

Barrett's Barrage: England’s Dom Barrett became the second international player to win the PBA World Championship when he held off reigning PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash, 238-235, in the title match at the South Point Hotel and Casino complex in Las Vegas (televised recently on ESPN). “Right now I couldn’t be happier,” Barrett said after joining Finland’s Osku Palermaa, the 2011 World Champion, as the second international player to win the event. “It’s a very special feeling, one you don’t often get in bowling, so I’m going to make the most of it.” Barrett, the leading qualifier over 52 games of qualifying and match play, locked up his third PBA Tour title with three strikes in the 10th frame, although he prematurely began to celebrate after his second strike, thinking that shot had clinched the victory. “I tried to stay calm all week, not

I try to stay very much in the moment, but I guess that was two weeks’ worth of joy and excitement coming out.” Barrett may have been the hottest bowler on the planet as we went to press; he was named the IBMA’s “Bowler Of The Month” for both November and December.

Rosenberg once again on its airwaves during the holiday week when a lot of the station’s regular hosts were on holiday hiatus. Rosenberg is currently a sports talk radio host in Miami. WFAN’s morning drive-time tandem of Boomer & Carton – Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton – has begun simulcasting their show on the CBS Sports Network. These guys have been successful because they have been able to tap into the Zeitgeist of the blue collar New York sports fan. If they try to play to a national audience because of the CBS Sports Network affiliation, they will be no different than ESPN’s “Mike & Mike”; Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg are excellent broadcasters, but they are always a distant second in morning sports Arbitron ratings in major markets. The New York Yankees, as well as their co-sponsor, New Era, absorbed a lot of skepticism when they announced the formation of the Pinstripe

Bowl five years ago that marked the return of a college bowl game to New York City for the first time since the Gotham Bowl in 1962. As is generally the case, the Yankees knew what they were doing; this year’s game, which saw Notre Dame beat Rutgers 29-16, drew 47,000 fans and was played on a sunny, 50 degree day. Yankees chief operating officer Lonn Trost quipped: “The Super Bowl host committee is very jealous of us!” Yankees CEO Randy Levine estimated that the positive economic impact of the Pinstripe Bowl for New York City would be in the neighborhood of $25 million. Following his Yankees introductory press conference, Carlos Beltran was criticized by many for expressing his anger at Mets owner Fred Wilpon for making fun of him and other Mets players in that infamous 2011 New Yorker interview he gave to writer Jeffrey Toobin. Granted, Beltran was wellcompensated by the Mets when he played for them, but Wilpon’s comments were classless, and Beltran is entitled to be hurt by them. Memo to Mets GM Sandy Alderson: Yes, Ike Davis’s last two seasons have been disappointing, but the bottom line is that you don’t have a credible replacement for him. Trading him for pennies on the dollar would make no sense. Beleaguered New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson has been the object of derision because of his belief that the Knicks will wind up winning the NBA’s Atlantic Division – but he may get the last laugh, provided that center Tyson Chandler and forward Carmelo Anthony can stay healthy. Woodson has not had the luxury of having both of his stars on the court at the same time. The Brooklyn Nets are in greater disarray than

the Knicks. The team has lost center Brook Lopez for the remainder of the season because of a foot injury, while understudy Andray Blatche appears to be butting heads with head coach Jason Kidd. Blatche ended 2013 with a mysterious four-game personal leave from the team. Nets general manager Billy King should give former Nets center Jason Collins a call; he garnered worldwide attention for being the first player in a major American team sport to announce that he is gay. during his career. He is not currently playing in the NBA, but has a reputation as a rebounder. One of the Nets’ major problems is that opponents constantly get second and third chances at the basket because of their ineffective defense.

Allie Haze

Get Into A Haze:

Allie Earns Penthouse Honor Rising adult film star Allie Haze is ringing in the new year as the January 2014 Penthouse Pet of the Month. Fans can get an up close and intimate look at Allie’s exclusive interview and photos in the New Year edition of the magazine; for more information, visit penthousemagazine.com. Haze’s tasteful layout was shot by photographer Cisco Lamessi. “What an honor to be chosen as a Penthouse Pet!” said Haze. “The shoot was a lot of fun, the photographer kept an energetic vibe on the set, and the photographs are beautiful." Haze, the star of HBO’s hit series “Emmanuelle Through Time,” posed for Australian Penthouse earlier in 2013, and in-between shooting adult movies and magazine layouts, she has been working to elevate her mainstream profile with her starring role in the erotic HBO series.

Dave Mason

“Allie has such great energy and she is absolutely the perfect Pet to start off 2014,” said Penthouse executive editor Barbara Rice Thompson. “She’s sexy, gorgeous, and has that ‘it’ quality. I’m sure we can expect great things from Allie in the future.” Haze will appear at the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE) from January 15 through 18 in Las Vegas. Twitter: @alliehaze.

Still Caught In Traffic

Dave Mason: Veteran guitarist Dave Mason is on the road with a new project, Dave Mason's Traffic Jam, now on the road (the tour stopped at The Parmount in Huntington on January 10). The “Traffic Jam” concerts feature hits and deep album cuts from 1967’s Mr. Fantasy and 1968’s Traffic albums. This year, Mason will also release a new EP titled Futures Past, featuring new versions of his older songs plus new material that he has written and performed on tour over the last few years. The EP will be available at davemasonmusic.com.

Help Storm Victims

Classic Rockers

Styx and REO Speedwagon, along with Richard Marx, Larry The Cable Guy, Survivor, Ted Nugent, Head Head, and Brushville, headlined the December 4 benefit concert “Rock To The Rescue Extends A Hand To Those In Need,” which raised $400,783 for central Illinois communities that we affected by recent torandos and winds. The sold-out concert took place at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Illinois. Rock To The Rescue has announced that distributed funds raised from ticket sales, auctions, and

donations will benefit the Midwest Food Bank, Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity, Tazwood Community Services, Toys for Tots and the Washington Community Bank in care of City of Washington Tornado Relief Fund. "On the morning of our recent ‘Rock To The Rescue’ benefit concert, we visited the Washington, Illinois site where the killer tornadoes did the lion's share of their damage,” said REO Speewagon's Kevin Cronin. “It was a chilling experience. The depth of destruction was hard to describe. We didn't need to be reminded that the effects of this storm and the need for help would go on for years to come. We promised ourselves, and the many new friends we made that day, that our work in the area would be ongoing. We plan on continuing our fundraising efforts as we return for four concerts in Illinois and Indiana in early 2014. It feels good to use the power of rock 'n’ roll to lend support to people without whose support we would surely not be rocking to this day." Rock To The Rescue originally started in 2001 as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and is the brainchild of Styx’s Tommy Shaw and Cronin. soulful singer that was chosen by the band unanimously over all of the great singers that auditioned, and the whole band is totally excited to get started on a new era of Tower of Power with Ray Greene at the helm,” says bandleader Emilio Castillo. “We want to thank Larry Braggs for 13 years of phenomenal singing with the band. He's been one of the best singers Tower of Power has ever had, and we wish him total success in all of his endeavors.” "There is no way to express how excited I am for this amazing and wonderful opportunity to work with a band that has such a tremendous legacy in the music industry,” said Greene. Diamonds Under Fire: A Shining New Rock Trio

The Los Angeles-based trio Diamonds Under Fire has premiered its music video for "Everything Fades To Red (Kidforce Edit)," the first single from its new EP, Hearts On Hiatus. It’s available now and streaming exclusively on Pure Volume. The band's full-length album will be released in 2014. "A Minor Threat song I heard inspired 'Everything Fades To Red,'" singer Vanessa Silberman explained. "The song is about passion, honesty, questioning authority, feeling pissed and frustrated, but also feeling motivated to turn that around into something positive and musically fun.” They’re Vanessa Silberman (vocals and guitars), Jessica Goodwin (drums and percussion), and Melinda Holm (bass); learn more at diamondsunderfire.com.

Funk Fills The Space The Funky Meters/ Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds The Space At Westbury

t was a merging of the old and new on December 20 at this sparkling new music venue, but in reality it was a whole lot more than that: It was definitive proof that funk – real, bass-driving, big bottom, from-the-soul funk, not the ersatz Justin Timberlake kind – is quite alive and well, thank you. Openers Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds (our cover subjects for issue 1134), making their Long Island debut in a major venue, proved us utterly justified for pointing the spotlight so brightly toward them. The young Brooklyn-based soul/R&B band somehow, some way, has legit R&B chops, which is amazing in and of itself; every member of the still-new act is quite the newcomer; most of their contemporaries are standing in line somewhere waiting for a TV talent show audition. Blissfully, lead singer Arleigh “Sister Sparrow” Kincheloe and what she refers to as “my Dirty Birds” are old school in the most delightful way: They write their

own funky, hot Sister Sparrow material, & The Dirty Birds pay homage to the great bands of the past, sing like well, birds, and oh, my, can they play, every single one of them. Petite powerhouse Arleigh Kincheloe is an amazing performer, and unlike strident divas such as Beth Hart and Joss Stone, she manages to not over-sing or faux emote – she's on stage to have a good time and make sure everyone around her does as well. Her brother, harp master Jackson Kincheloe, is a new era Kim Wilson; the horn section (Phil Rodriguez, Ryan Snow, Brian Graham) provide some of the tastiest charts since the glory days of Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Unexpected was

the perfect harmony singing of bassist Josh Myers; the rock-edged intensity of guitarist Sasha Brown, and the booming backbeat of drummer Bram Kincheloe. All together, the Birds are the most important new band in area roots music, and seem locked in for national success. Don't judge them from their somewhat corny (and utterly unnecessary) music videos – see them live, where the funk and sweat take over and never lets go; ask the hundreds of new fans

who surged toward the stage to dance with them on this unexpectedly warm night on Post Avenue. The Dirty Birds were a perfect opener for The Funky Meters, who may sport more gray hair and inches around their middles, but sound exactly the same as they did in their 1970s heyday. This offshoot of The Original Meters is known by many an “instrumental band,” but guitarist Brian Stoltz is an underrated singer, and the harmonies provided by the legendary Art Neville, George Porter Jr., and Russell Bastiste Jr. could heat up soup while it's still in the can. The New Orleans-based band performed most Meters classics, but fans shook their asses and danced during even the most obscure songs of their rousing, amiable set. On a night when winter was inexplicably trying to turn back to spring, score this one for real music – and real musicians as well.

“I Get Around,” and “California Girls” with more obscure songs – which were just as good if not better than their classics. If your Beach Boys knowledge is more or less limited to the 1974 Endless Summer album, it will be a pleasant surprise to discover “The Little Girl I Once Knew,” “All This Is That,” “Marcella,” “Getcha Back,” and “Add Some Music To Your Day.” A new song, “That’s Why God Made The Radio,” was written just for this tour, and it sounds like it could have been a top 20 hit back in the Beach Boys’ hitmaking heyday. These fine musicians are far more than a nostalgia act, as this live album clearly proves. – Lloyd Carroll The Beach Boys Live: The 50th Anniversary Tour Capitol In 2012, the surviving original Beach Boys put aside their longstanding differences to tour the country in honor of the 50th anniversary of their first Capitol singles, “Surfin’ Safari” and “Surfer Girl.” With a solid orchestra behind them led by Brian Wilson’s longtime accompanists – guitarist/vocalist Jeffrey Foskett and keyboardist Darian Sahanaja – the reformed Beach Boys could relax and concentrate on their legendary harmonizing. Even though they are all over the age of 70, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, and Bruce Johnston did a great job in rewinding the clock. While the lead vocals were not as powerful as the original recordings, they still sounded quite good, while the tight background vocals were reminiscent of Beach Boys concerts of the 60s and 70s. During The Beach Boys’ show at The Beacon Theater during the tour, the band nicely mixed their biggest hits “Good Vibrations,” “Help Me, Rhonda,”

Various Artists Soundtrack: Inside Llewyn Davis Nonesuch Okay, we get it, Coen Brothers – but your ironic humor only goes so far, and this time, you’ve more than washed out. This T Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack (enough, already) of their new film about a folk musician in early 1960s New York City is utterly cowardly, injecting non-musicians such as the poorly cast, he’ll-star-in-anything Justin Timberlake into the pretentious proceedings. This meandering, meaningless hodgepodge of an album, which also features other ironic posers such as star Oscar Isaac and Marcus Mumford, is about what you’d expect. It takes more to be a cowboy than putting on a hat; the very concept of the meekly talented Timberlake as a folkie is not only one of the reasons the film was DOA after its December release, but it manages to be a vicious insult to anyone who enjoys and tresures actual folk music and its history. Nice job, Coens; next time, why not cast Jim Parsons in The Hulk Hogan Story? Makes about as much sense. – Bob Smith

Mariah Parker Sangria: An Indo-Latin Jazz Experience Ancient-Future.com Records We continue to insist that our readers continue to have an appreciation for the more serious side of the music world, so we insist you continue to keep our faith alive by checking out this 2009 release by the multi-talented Parker, whose label, Ancient-Future.com, recently obtained worldwide distribution through Ryko/WEA. Much more than an interpreter of world/light jazz sounds, the charismatic Parker – who has worked with many of the greats of the genre – surprises here with an album of original, sensuous instrumentals. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself rocking along to the more upbeat cuts here, which should prove to be streaming radio favorites any moment now. – Bob Smith Kidz Bop Kidz Kidz Bop 25 Razor & Tie All together: You better watch out, you better not cry; you better not pout, I’m telling you why – a recording industry that would allow a bunch of screeching moppets to mewl through “Wrecking Ball,” “Roar,” “Summertime Sadness,” and “Still Into You” isn’t nearly as evil as the mentally abusive parents who would actually buy this soulless crap for their own flesh and blood in the first place. And ponder: This series of “albums” routinely changes the lyrics of the songs when they’re too “adult.” So why f**king bother in the first place? – Cody Bell

It was a cold, wintery, and bitter night as I approached the entrance to Pier 94 with my friend. I could feel the bass pulsating through me as I got to the entrance to the venue. I knew this was going to be a good night. The venue was huge and was worthy of the acts it was hosting. The lights were incredible and the real high tech, strong lasers were brought out in about the middle of the show. The first night at Pier 94

DJ Snake’s, but he played the crowd correctly. That night was one of trap, dance, bass, twerk ... you get the idea. Not to mention the giant twerk wall set up in the back of the venue dedicated to well, twerking. But anyways, Boys Noize played a mix of trap and house, with a little of mainstream, but just the right amount as to not get too much into it. Then, the headliner came on; with a countdown of course. As Major Lazer took the stage the crowd went insane as they knew what was about to happen. As popular as Major Lazer is, I believe that they deserve to be where they are for a few reasons. First of all, the mixing of songs was right on point. The way the songs were mixed over one another and the song choice was spot on. What they did intelligently was play not only solely electronic songs. Some old classics such as Sean Paul’s “Get Busy” were played and it was one of those moments where you could say, “Hey I remember this song!” It also helped that at that point Major Lazer had the best lighting of the night. However, the biggest impact was made by their choice, engagement of the Alesso song crowd, and their mixing ability. After on December 30, DJ Snake, GTA, Boys Major Lazer closed, GTA came on. I didn’t Noize, and Major Lazer were there to spin get to see all of them, but they had a strong for the crowd. When we got in, DJ Snake opening and stuck with the general theme of was performing, dropping some very nice the night. trap. Every single song played was one of The next night was New Year’s Eve, and those “what’s the name of this” kind of song; I was excited; I had waited for a long time the ones you just have to have. The crowd for this event, and I knew it was going to be was going crazy to it, dancing with the beat. amazing. When I got there, Clockwork was He was playing songs that you could get starting the night off right. He was dropping down to, including a “Jingle Bells” version of everything from dance to trap to electro to his hit, “Bird Machine.” It all culminated with straight house and was doing a great job his recent hit “Turn Down For What,” which switching from genre to genre. I initially finished the set off, leaving the crowd very didn’t think he was going to drop pleased. Next up was Boys Noize. I must any trap as his alter ego, RL Grime, admit, his set was not quite as dirty as usually does that, but I was very glad

that he did and I could tell that the crowd was too. Clockworkwent hard and that’s what I like to see. After Clockwork, Alesso came on at 11:45 pm to bring in the New Year. It was an epic experience; there was a countdown on the giant screen, and as the New Year hit, balloons fell from the ceiling, confetti shot out everywhere, and Alesso began to play one of his biggest hits, “Years.” Obviously, this was a very relatable time to the occasion and a song everyone could connect with given the DJ situation. From Snake then on Alesso continued his set. It was a very typical Alesso set, sticking within the realm of progressive house and playing all the big numbers. He was easily a crowd pleaser, as with every song he began to play, the crowd started to sing along with it, whether it was “Clarity” or “Alive.” His set was a happy, feel good set; one that was perfect for the New Year and perfect for the feelings associated with

that time. Alesso continued to play until about 1:45 am, and then Don Diablo came on to help us continue the party. At first, he stuck mostly with the same kind of stuff that Alesso was playing. I went to take a break and hang out in the lounge, and when I came back out, Diablo was dropping some really dirty electro house. I didn’t knowthe names of any of the songs, but I liked all of them a lot. All of my friends and I were going crazy to the stuff he was dropping and it was a great follow up to Alesso. Don Diablo finished up at around 3:45 am, and Deniz Koyu was set to follow up after him. I wasn’t able to stay for the rest of night but I think I closed it off right. It was a great time, a superb New Year’s Eve, and I wouldn’t have spent it any other way. These two RPM events were high quality and well put together, and I can’t wait to do it again next year. Until next time, keep raging, my friends! Feel free to contact me at richiegtechno@ gmail.com.

Rollin' Stone,” “Masterpiece,” and “The Motown Song (with Rod Stewart).” And consider this: Other legendary hits such as “Get Ready” (#29), “Aint Too Proud To Beg” (#13), and “I Could Never Love Another” (#13) didn't even chart in the Top 10, despite their classic status years later. Granted, given the constraints of a single concert, not every one of these classic hits will be played. However, after reading these lists … can you think of a good reason not to go, if only to get swept away in the memories? For those who are into the history of these legendary R&B supergroups – or those simply curious to see who remains in the bands – here are the current rosters for both hitmakers: The Temptations: Otis Williams (the group’s founder), Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Joe Herndon, and Bruce Williamson. ne of the first giants of the electronic/jam band boom, Lotus, is currently on tour in support of its new digital album, Monks – a trek that will stop of Saturday, January 25 at 8 pm at the new Space in Westbury. The Werks will open; tickets, $25, are now on sale via Ticketmaster.com. One of the defining and most popular acts in live electronic music, Lotus has never fit neatly in a simple categorization. The five-piece continues to push boundaries with the September 10, 2013 release of Monks, a hip hop album featuring Lyrics Born, Gift Of Gab (Blackalicious), Mr. Lif, Doodlebug (Digable Planets), and others. Using the band’s own studio work as a sample source, the music will have a familiar feel to Lotus fans but re-contextualized as classic hip hop. Monks is available digitally, for free via the band’s official website (lotusvibes.com), on iTunes, and on vinyl. "The project started with a couple tracks we recorded with Mr. Lif,” explained the band's Luke

Miller. “From there, we just kept expanding to eventually include 11 different MCs and singers. Lotus is predominantly an instrumental band, so it was a lot of fun to create these collaborations." Instrumental interlude tracks push into more experimental to create cinematic vignettes. The band's Jesse Miller stated, “For the interludes, we went toward funk and jazz influenced beat music. Off-time drum beats, analog synthesizers, tape echo machines, and even a baritone guitar were

here are monsters off-Broadway this season inhabited by terrific actresses giving explosive, indelible performances. Musical theater star Betty Buckley is riveting as a spoiled, alcoholic wealthy matron in the Signature Theatre’s world premiere of Horton Foote’s The Old Friends. Written in 1995, the previously unproduced play is a soap opera set in Foote’s fictional small-town Harrison, Texas, in 1965 about the attempt to find love, happiness and a sense of self among. Lois Smith (who won a Drama Desk Award for her luminous performance in Foote’s The Trip To Bountiful) is heartbreaking as the cowed family matriarch who has signed away her home and fortune to her restless, greedy and unfulfilled party-girl daughter (brilliantly played by Veanne Cox) and hateful alcoholic son-in-law (Adam LeFevre) and now is dependent on their whims. When her daughter-in-law, former beauty queen Sybil Borden (Hallie Foote, a master interpreter of her father’s plays), returns home from South America with her just deceased husband’s body, her arrival rekindles old desire in her former beau Howard (played with understated charm by Cotter Smith) the town’s desirable, never-married playboy. She also rekindles envy in

band’s distinguishing feature is the ability to maintain a decidedly unique musical voice and remain current while bucking passing trends. The band slowly built a devoted fan base through steady touring, and the crowds have grown at an increasing pace. This grassroots growth has made the band in high demand for festivals including Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Ultra, and Rothbury, and earned the band sold out shows at the country’s premier theatres and clubs.

The Werks used to record these short evocative set pieces.” The tracks on the album are woven together with a narrative following a monk's journey. "Life as a touring artist feels monastic sometimes. Monks devote their entire lives to their spirituality. We devote much of ours to music and have to sacrifice certain things to make that happen," said Luke Miller, who co-produced along with Jesse MIller. Lotus has crafted a unique musical style outside of simple genre limitations. On a given weekend, the band could be the only group with guitars at an allelectronic music festival, and the next night crash a traditional rock festival with their dance heavy beats, synths, and samples. Equal parts instrumental post-rock and electronic dance, the

her old rival Gertrude (a fabulous Buckley, who reveals the vulnerability inside this monster), the richest, most manipulative woman in town, who attempts to upend the quiet new life the stoic Sybil is trying to build and as well as destroy the lives of the others. In the play’s unforgettable climax, Buckley executes a masterful alcohol-fueled tantrum, smashing everything in Sybil’s new home. While the minor play is unusually melodramatic and unresolved for Foote, the strong cast under the expert direction of Foote expert Michael Wilson fills it with passionate life and compassion.

However, the monster you will never forget (and never want to meet in real life) is Daphna (nee Diana), the virago at the center of Joshua Harmon’s hilarious, insightful and blistering dark comedy Bad Jews – and she’s played to the hilt by the extraordinary Tracee Chimo. A triumph last season at the Roundabout’s intimate Black Box Theater, Bad Jews has moved upstairs to the larger Laura Pels Theatre. Daphna’s mouth hangs open mid-chew, she scratches herself in her

rumpled sweatpants, and manically brushes her thick hair, but it is the aggressive, holier-than-thou rants and personal attacks that she hurls at her wealthier cousin Liam (the equally marvelous Michael Zegen) and his latest shiska girlfriend, the guilelessly sweet and clueless Melody (Molly Ranson), that make her so heinous. She almost literally sucks the air out of the small studio apartment that she is sharing with Melody, Liam and his brother Jonah (Philip Ettinger) – who tries to tune out by playing video games – on the eve of sitting shiva for their beloved grandfather. Daphna won’t forgive Liam for missing the funeral because he dropped his cellphone from a ski lift in Aspen and she selfrighteously baits him for being less observant, for exclusively dating gentiles, and for being a “bad Jew.” Liam gives as good as he gets, ferreting out Daphna’s hidden vulnerabilities and insecurities. The confrontations are explosive. What is at stake is a gold religious charm – a Chai symbolizing “life” – a family heirloom that their grandfather hid under his tongue throughout the Holocaust and gave to his bride after the war. Daphna believes she should inherit it as she’s the most religious; Liam already has the Chai and wants to give it to Melody as an engagement symbol. Yet, however cringe-making Daphna is, her argument has merit – Liam does represent a religious and cultural assimilation that augers the end of a tradition. Under Daniel Aukin’s perceptive direction, the play is both gripping and hilarious and the performances spot on, with Tracee Chimo creating a fury you won’t soon forget. – Jane Klain

96 Tears Redux: I'm very excited over the initial reaction to my reboot EDM update of the 1966 classic "96 Tears," which originally was a #1 hit for ? and The Mysterians. The ChromeOrange team – Mark Gaide and his wife, Susan Faber Gaide – have really delivered the goods, and as a result some really satisfying work has come forth. Already rocking Belgium, Mexico, Greece, and the hippest spots in the USA, this song is turning out to be an exciting and gratifying start for 2014. Thanks to everyone for all the positive feedback and support. Beyoncé's Bungle: Beyoncé made several NASA families quite unhappy when she used an audio clip from the 1986 Challenger disaster on her new album for effect. Survivors of those who were killed expressed their dismay, and Team Beyoncé jumped into action to try and control the anger. In better news, Beyoncé made a wily sneak attack on the Billboard charts, releasing her new album without any advance word or hype, and broke all records (pardon the pun) by staying at #1 on the Billboard chart week after week during the holidays. The new album reportedly as sold more than one million copies as a download album only, as no physical CDs have yet been made available for sale. That, in turn, led

the brick-and-mortar record chains Best Buy, Target, and WalMart to announce a boycott of the release. Like her husband, Jay Z, Beyoncé certainly has learned how to attract attention.
