A year later, Winter was invited to the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration at Madison Square Garden, to reprise his blistering version of “Highway 61 Revisited,” one of two indelible covers of Dylan, along with Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower,” that defined the closing of the 1960s. Joining Winter at MSG was that night’s all-star “house band” of G.E. Smith, Steve Cropper, Booker T. Jones, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Anton Fig, and Jim Keltner. True To The Blues not only showcases Winter and the band lineups he has led over the years, many of them (up through 1976) including his brother, Edgar Winter, on vocals and an array of instruments including keyboards, reeds, and drums.

most cities. At press time, the new The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty truly ranked as a secret, languishing at #13 in the box office tallies. Truly, this Mitty is a pity. But why? Perhaps the biggest factor is the “epic” part that Oswalt hinted about. Not content to achieve the lilting charm of the original James Thurber story it was based upon (or of the warm, silly 1947 version starring Danny Kaye), Stiller’s Mitty, who imagines himself in a variety of heroic situations in response to a humdrum life, isn’t nearly as likable as previous versions of the character. Stiller’s precious yet dark telling of this time-worn tale is elaborate and detailed, yet immensely boring. The real/imagined journeys and Mitty’s wild travails in Greenland, Iceland, and the Himalayas – skateboarding from a volcano, battling a shark, and all other the wistful, action-packed

featuring the world’s greatest illusionists together on one stage. It makes matters worse that even with all the attention to detail during the action sequences, the juxtaposition of what’s real and what is Mitty’s fantasy isn’t always made outwardly clear; it’s more annoying than arty. In all, it makes this Walter Mitty a muted oddball of a hero that is absolutely impossible to root for. Wiig is winning as the Life Magazine office co-worker that Mitty is smitten with, but the building romance isn’t enough to save this oddly unmoving fantasy film. Too adult for kids and far too juvenile for adults, this “secret life” tries to be all things for all people, but doesn’t work on virtually any level. The soggy box office tallies are justified, as this ranks as one of the most disappointing big budget movies of the first half of this decade. – Cody Bell Las Vegas and at The Planet Hollywood Saxe Theater. hat is most surprising about the Alex Rodriguez scenario is how many members of the media were urging “A-Rod” to meekly accept the 2014 season-long suspension handed down to him by arbitrator Frederic Horowitz. If Rodriguez were take to take Major League Baseball to court, all of the sordid dealings between MLB and Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch – Rodriguez' onetime confidante and alleged supplier – would come out. That is a gift to every media outlet in the world. The problem is that most sportswriters and broadcasters like covering games and detest Alex the idea of hanging around a Rodriguez courthouse to cover real news, even though that story would clearly be in the financial interests of their media companies. Even if a trial were to prove that “A-Rod” was the biggest PED used of all time, he could do significant damage to Bud Selig and Major League Baseball. It's still quite confusing why Rodriguez is suing the Major League Baseball Players Association, a move that won’t endear him to his teammates whenever he does return. From a media viewpoint, “A-Rod” is the gift that just keeps on giving. To no one’s surprise, former Atlanta Braves pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine were

elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, as was slugger Frank Thomas, in their first year of eligibility. Kings Park native Craig Biggio fell a measly two votes short of induction. What is most bothersome about the voting is that Mike Piazza received only 62 percent of the vote in his second year of eligibility. He should have been an automatic in his first year on the ballot, but too many members of the Baseball Writers Association of America have taken a “guilty until proven innocent” view of Piazza because they suspect that he used steroids. It doesn’t matter to them that he never tested positive, nor was he named in the Mitchell Report. He also wasn't called to testify before Congress the way other players were. It Was 50 Years Ago Today...” is the name of the special weekend to be held at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor to celebrate the arrival of the British rock senations The Beatles to the United States 50 years ago. This event, part of HarborFrost Weekend, takes place February 7 through 9 at Bay Street, located at the foot of the Long Wharf in Sag Harbor. Tickets and information: baystreet.org. This all-Beatles weekend, which will include films and concerts, begins on Friday, February 7 at 8 pm with “Legends: The Beatles.” Archivist and filmmaker Joe Lauro will open long-dormant film vaults to present a special event detailing the history of the “Fab Four.” From their first known film shot at The Cavern Club in 1962 to their final 1969 “rooftop” concert, The Beatles will be in the house performing their music on film like it was only “yesterday” ... get it?

Backing It Up: Just out on DVD is a great documentary film, 20 Feet From Stardom, which details the ups and downs of the backup singers who are so close and yet so far away from that mic in the center of the stage. The most famous backup singer to ever cause a stir is Mary Wilson

there's Merry Clayton, the powerful female voice that you hear on "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones and everything from vintage Joe Cocker to "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Merry is truly one of a kind, and still has an astounding voice. Many of the iconic females featured in the film are 70 years old or older. Motown divas Tata Vega and Mable John show up, as does Susaye Greene, who did her share of backup sessions before becoming the very last Supreme in the mid-70s incarnation of the all time classic girl group. Lisa Fisher and Judith Hall are spotlighted, neither having made it onto the charts or breaking through in any way while making artists such as Michael Jackson and Sting sound good. There are interviews with Sting, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, and many others, all helping to piece together the interesting and frequently heartbreaking story of the “backup singer.” The film 20 Feet From Stardom will certainly keep you entertained as well as open your eyes to a part of the music biz that you don't get to see that often. CBGB Lives On: The day has come when you can stroll into Walmart and buy a CD with The Dead Boys, Johnny Thunders, and Wayne County on it, as well as the DVD of the CBGB film. Who would have thought that the day would come when once-reviled punk rock would burrow its way into the sales racks of middle America? The soundtrack is fantastic, and the movie is alright, although not what it could have or should have been – but punk has found its place into “housewives central.” Will wonders never cease?

She was also the lead singer of The Blossoms (seen on Johnny Thunders the 1960s TV series "Shindig"), who sang on everything from Frank Sinatra records to the classic backup vocals on "The Monster Mash." Darlene's story (and breathtaking performances) are well worth the price of admission – but then

The Allman Brothers Band has announced plans for its 45th anniversary in 2014, including the annual string of concerts at New York City’s Beacon Theatre, with 14 shows kicking off March 7. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have performed at the 2,800-seat Beacon more than 220 times since they began the tradition in 1989. “It’s always good to get back on stage with the Brothers,” says ABB co-founder Gregg Allman. “Man, beyond the Brothers, that Beacon audience is like our family. You can look into their eyes — they’re right on top of you … there’s no other room like it.” All of their 2013 Beacon Theatre shows sold out. The Allman Brothers Band first began performing its annual multi-night engagements at the Beacon in 1989, with few exceptions, and have now performed there 222 times so far.
