Savoy Brown Featuring Kim Simmonds March 7 • YMCA Boulton Center, Bay Shore (631) 969-1101 • boultoncenter.org

Clearly, the years have been kind to the blistering, legendary guitarist Simmonds, one of the earliest masters of British blues/rock. Area fans miss Long Island's Gerry Sorrentino and Mario Staiano as Simmonds' ace rhythm section, but the current Savoy Brown trio – featuring bassist Pat DeSalvo and drummer Garnet Grimm – continue Simmonds' stripped down, rocking vision quite succinctly. Expect “Train To Nowhere,” “I'm Tired,” and all the other classics as Simmonds always delivers onstage. Legendary … a blues/rock institution … true innovators. These are just a few of the ways Savoy Brown has been described over the past 40 years by music critics and fans. One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown, with founder guitarist Simmonds at the helm, helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today. And, as many fans realize, the band has Long Island roots as Sorrentino and Staiano kept the pulse of the group going for several years – but despite the changes, this band never stops.

Film Reviews Like Catching The Flu Twice

RoboCop

RoboCop Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman Directed by José Padilha Sony Pictures I, Frankenstein Starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney, Socratis Otto, Mahesh Jadu, Caitlin Stasey, Aden Young Directed by Stuart Beattie Lionsgate

Everything old is new in Hollywood – even when the first go-round wasn't exactly gangbusters. Get ready to dust off the memory banks throughout 2014, because whether you like it or not, you're getting new versions of Sherman & Peabody, Hercules, (Return To) Nuke 'Em High, Veronica Mars, The Muppets, Captain America, Spider-Man, Godzilla … and that's just the first half of the year. What – last year's Lone Ranger and Hansel & Gretel stink bombs weren't warning signs enough for the “creative forces” behind upcoming film releases? Why not just give us four or five new Hulk remakes while they're at it, and just keep remaking a character

that can't be turned from a comic book into a live action star in the first place? Here, we get a remake and a reboot, and both are as horrid as anything you're likely to see during the pre-summer months. The new RoboCop, thankfully, isn't a scene-by-scene remake of the 1987 original, but that's not to say the new version is any better than the first version. Set in the year

2028, OmniCorp, led by charismatic Pat Novak (Samuel L. Jackson sporting a fright wig), wants to bring its human drone technology to American police forces; those robots have been fighting in the military for years. When hero police officer Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) gets seriously injured, OmniCorp sees it as its opportunity to build the first half-robot, half-man super officer. But the man inside the machine, Murphy, is still a man, and … well, he's a-gonna do the right thing regardless of things like corporate profits and bad orders. What you can expect here is a lot of bad CGI, but even worse acting and a horrible script; it looks like this film was made in a week on a Windows XP computer. Elite Squad director Padilha attempts to keep things moving at a quick pace, but seeing this, especially if you remember the first RoboCop, is an experience akin to chewing second-hand gum. However, I, Frankenstein makes the new RoboCop look like Citizen Cane. A cheap, ugly, humorless, meaningless farce, this non-horror action film has absolutely no idea what it wants to be, and at press time ranks as the worst reviewed film of 2014 (and audiences hated it every bit as much; the film sunk like a stone at the box office following its initial release and TV ad campaign). We'd tell you more, but it’s a waste of your time – but we'll only let you know that this movie has much to do with Frankenstein as Good Times has to do with Aluminum Siding Monthly. It's early, but when “worst film of the decade” lists are bandied about, this will be #1 on more than a few critics’ lists. – Cody Bell

Film Reviews Winter’s Tale Starring Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, and Jessica Brown-Findlay Written and directed by Akiva Goldsman Warner Brothers

Peter Lake (Farrell) is in Dutch with his gleefully demonic crew boss Pearly Soames (Crowe), so much so that Pearly and a cadre of his bowler-hatted thugs are pursuing him through the streets of early 20th century New York with murderous intent. After eluding the gang with the aid of a white horse with supernatural abilities, he prepares to flee the city by acquiring as much stolen loot as possible. It is in the course of his final break-in that Peter meets the beautiful but doomed Beverly Penn (Brown-Findlay), and so begins a love that will transcend time, defy death, and serve as a battle ground in the eternal struggle between good and evil. Winter’s Tale is a catastrophe on nearly every level. It has all the narrative cohesiveness of a four year-old’s finger-painting, performances so far on the wrong side of earnest that melodramatic would seem an improvement by orders of magnitude, and a score that somehow manages to be both cloying and utterly dismissible. Its big themes are presented like the condensed version of the Cliff’s Notes for “My First Philosophy Reader.” That this absolute trash heap of a film has an ultra-slick, big budget look to it is in no way redeeming; rather, it results in a cognitive dissonance so ferocious that the areas of your brain tasked with reconciling such discrepancies may choose to self-immolate rather than expose the rest of your rational mind to the type of cascading failure trying to make sense of this gibberish could trigger. However substantial the suspension of disbelief

you bring to this film – and fans of Mark Helprin’s 1983 novel are sure to bring a good deal – it will all be quickly sacrificed on an altar of nonsensical choices, the most inexplicable of which is the presence of a broad Dublin accent in a man born to Russian parents and raised on the streets of postGilded Age New York by a Native American (played by Graham Greene in a micro-cameo, the sole purpose of which is unnecessary exposition). It seems we are to intuit that Peter Lake must have spent so much time being mentored by Pearly Soames that he managed to acquire his intonation; that Soames happens to sound like comedian Tommy Tiernan riffing on the often impenetrable accent endemic to Cork City is just one of the many flies in this sloppy ointment. Perhaps this unexplained incongruity is in the source material; perhaps it was a conscious decision to take advantage of that portion of the American collective unconscious that ascribes to all things Irish a lyric,

6 • Good Times Magazine - February 25 - March 10, 2014

fantastical quality – or maybe, when the film’s original budget was slashed by nearly a third, they kept the craft service and pink slipped the dialect coach. No matter how enchanting the magical realism, it can never justify throwing all logical consistency out the bloody window. Akiva Goldsman is a capable writer whose box office bonanzas (I, Robot, A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code, I Am Legend) have earned him a lot of Hollywood amity. It is unfortunate that, while endeavoring to bring Helprin’s novel to the screen, he unexpectedly lost his wife Rebecca to a heart attack. This film is covered in the fingerprints of someone desperately trying to find meaning in loss. It is a shame that all that commercial success apparently did not bring with it a single person with enough honesty and compassion to say to Goldsman in regards to Winter’s Tale, “Friend, you need to let this one go.” – Michael Lee

alph Kiner’s death brought out an emotional response from New York Mets fans, the type that has understandably been missing the last five years. I can vouch for the general consensus that Kiner was a gracious and classy man. He was always receptive to talking baseball, and he did not check to see if you were a sportswriter from a big outlet to decide whether a conversation was worth his time. Ralph Trust me, that’s not how it is with Kiner two-thirds of the current SNY broadcast team. Barry Lyons, a third-string catcher on the 1986 Mets, told me that one of his greatest thrills as a player was to be a guest on the Mets’ long-running post-game show, “Kiner’s Korner.” When any substitute player got a chance to be the hero of the game and thus merit an appearance on the Dillon show, it was like being Gee inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for a day. Kiner, as most have noted, was guilty of many malapropisms, such as referring to the late Mets catcher Gary Carter as Gary Cooper. He would have nodded approvingly if he knew that I pulled a “Kiner” by referring to the sultry R&B singer

Rhianna as “Rhiannon” (a la the famous Fleetwood Mac song) in a Good Times article a few years ago (I am still apologizing about that one to my editor). Mets pitcher Dillon Gee and New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner were honored two weeks ago at the annual Thurman Munson Dinner that benefits AHRC, an organization that enhances the lives of the developmentally disabled. Gee said that he can’t believe that he is now one of the veterans on the Mets staff. Gardner conceded that this has not been a pleasant winter, as he doesn’t know where he will fit in now that the Yankees have acquired Jacoby Ellsbury to play centerfield. “We have the same skills, “ Gardner told the media before the dinner. Diana Munson, the widow of the late Yankees catcher, said that she is thrilled that her husband is one of the characters in the new Broadway show, Bronx Bombers. “It’s a great way for a new generation to learn about him,” she told me. In society news, Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Anne Vyalitsyna (better known simply as Anne V) have ended their high profile relationship. It is a tossup as to which one spent more time in front of a mirror. As a wellknown tennis commentator told me last summer, “If the Harvey-Anne V relationship were a stock, I’d short it!” Sportswriter Jake Appleman has just written his first book, Brooklyn Bounce (Scribner), a look at the Nets’ first season in Brooklyn. The Nets finished with 49-33 record in 2013, but that good

mark belied the turmoil of a season that saw head coach Avery Johnson get fired a third of the season in – and his replacement, P.J. Carlesimo, met the same fate after the Nets got bounced out of the first round of the playoffs with a painful Game 7 loss to an inferior Chicago Bulls team. Appleman lets us get to know some of the personalities such as Josh Childress, a bright forward out of Stanford who hardly played and asked for his release; Deron Williams, the moody guard; and affable but oftinjured center Brook Lopez, who frequently felt the wrath of Johnson. Brooklyn Bounce is a fun read. Mike Tyson’s Spike Leedirected one-man show, Undisputed Truth, is now available on DVD. Tyson talks about his Brooklyn childhood; time in the slammer; and chewing off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s ear. Lee offers his thoughts as a DVD bonus. It’s easy to wonder if the Long Island Ducks have reached out to Alex Rodriguez now that he will serve his suspension from MLB for the entire 2014 season.

BOWLING Chris Barnes

was the winner of the USBC Senior Masters as well as one other PBA50 tour event, an outstanding record for only participating in six of the 11 PBA50 events. He ranked first in average, second in earnings, and sixth in points on the PBA50 tour, but also had a stellar year on the regular PBA tour, winning the Barbasol Tournament of Champions and finishing third in the PBA World Championship as well as the BPAA US Open, the Lucas Oil event, and the Cheetah event. At the age of 51, he posted the fourth highest average on the regular PBA tour.

Belmo On A Roll: The phenomenon named Jason Belmonte continues to roll on. The Australian superstar has been chosen as the January 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Belmonte defeated Wes Malott 219-218 in the championship match to win the PBA Barbasol Tournament of Champions for his eighth career and second major PBA title. The two-handed Australian star began the week being named as 2012-13 PBA Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year. He becomes one of a handful of bowlers to hold two major crowns at the same time. Belmonte won the USBC Masters in February 2013. Belmonte continues a winning streak of the IBMA Kegel Bowler of the Month honor by capturing the monthly award in each of the last four years. Previous wins in the streak have been November and December 2011, October 2012, and February 2013. Others obtaining votes this month were Mika Koivuniemi, winner of the World Bowling Tour/European Bowling Tour 44th Brunswick Ballmaster Open; Brittni Hamilton and Chris Barnes, the women's and men's winners of the 2014 Team USA Trials. Free Balls For Youth: Storm Bowling will provide each state Pepsi Youth Championships event with a bowling ball to use as a fundraising tool this season, reported Terry Bigham of USBC

"We feel that one of the best ways is to support youth bowling and that is why we are proud to support the Pepsi Youth Championships." LIGBT Times: Talented David Cincotta of North Babylon won his first LIGBT trophy with a great finals performance on February 9 as he defeated Anne Quarry ($500) of Holtsville 251-217 to win the $1,000 top prize. Eric Vecchi of Islip Terrace inished third with a 201, taking home $300. Enter LIGBT tours by logging on to ligbtour.com.

Things That Make You Go Mmm...

A host of food and eateryrelated things we've noticed: We couldn't help but notice the new coat of paint thrown onto most area Burger King franchises of late, with new seating and décor gracing a number of area restaurants, including those that host other chains as well (such as the combo Burger King/Popeye's location on Union Turnpike in Flushing). Yes, they look a lot better. No, you still can't be served at the BK on Old Country Road in Westbury in any sort of a reasonable amount of time, even if you walk in with no line at the counter; it seems to be a battle between BK and Rite-Aid as they vie for The Kinks' “Tired Of Waiting For You” as their unofficial theme song. Better in every way: One evening at The Lake House in Bay Shore (240 West Main Street) is like discovering how the “one percent” lives, but you don't need to be a millionaire to enjoy chef Matt Connors' world class restaurant. emember, all: The name of this publication is Good Times. Sure, there are only about 1,000 hard topics we could peruse as we offer our first “LBGT” column here – the obviously awful choice to hold the Olympics in Russia, many states refusing to jump on the marriage equality bandwagon, virtually anything to do with the Republican party – but there are many sources to find crusading journalism on those things, and sadly, a whole lot of other sobering topics. However, since we're Good Times, we're here to offer upbeat news about our area's LGBT community, things to do and see, and lots more. Here are our first topics of interest, which we hope you find useful regardless of your orientation. Enjoy! Kudos to Bethpage Credit Union for its groundbreaking

MEDIA The Girl’s Guide To Depravity

Funny” standup comedy special debuted on Valentine's Day on EPIX, and for the legendary blonde sex symbol the show's success must be a double-edged sword – sure, the show was raunchy and funny (with great contributions from Long Island favorites Lynne Koplitz and Tammy Pescatelli), but the program's adult content can't be overly pleasing to her producers on “The View.” Some industry wags have already reported she's been on somewhat thin ice on the morning talk show for being, well, Jenny McCarthy. Frankly, she should never change; she's been a one-of-a-kind personality since her MTV days. – Bob Smith Marie Back In Force: Five-time New York Times bestselling author Marie Force recently released All You Need Is Love, the first of the Green Mountain series of books set in Vermont. The series is about the Abbott family, with 10 Jenny siblings, that runs the McCarthy Green Mountain Country Store. This is Force's first major mass market paperback release, published by Berkley Sensation, a division of Random House-Penguin. Berkley has bought the first five books of this series. Book 2, I Want to Hold Your Hand, will be out on June 3, and Book 3, I Saw Her Standing There, will be out on November 4. Force hopes to write at least 10 books in the series, one for each of the siblings. All You Need is Love can be purchased everywhere books are sold, including Target, Barnes & Noble, WalMart, Books-AMillion, and in airports. With more than two million books sold, Force is one of the with normal, healthy libidos; top contemporary romance authors. “Femme Fatales,” from the creators She plans at least two more books in of the magazine of the same name; her New York Times bestselling “Life On Top,” featuring former Penthouse Pet Heather Vandeven; and McCarthys of Gansett Island Series in 2014, and is looking forward to the other shows. All in all, Cinemax's March 24 launch of Fatal Jeopardy, new-age offerings beat the pants off Book 7 in the popular Fatal Series. of HBO's wheezing, redundant, "I didn't intend to write three repeated-forever episodes of “Real series at the same time," Force said, Sex,” which throughout its long run "but that's how it worked out!" For always has managed to look, sound, more information, log on to and feel as it was produced in 1989 marieforce.com. … Jenny McCarthy's “Dirty Sexy The change has been swift and shockingly noticeable: Cinemax, trying to keep up with the hit original programing of both Showtime and its own sister network, HBO, still features adultoriented overnight programs under its “Cinemax After Dark” banner – but rarely shown are cheesy R-rated softcore “drive-in”-style sex films these days. For years, its fans referred to Cinemax during the wee hours as “Skinemax,” where biker mellers, Andy Sidaris action films, and tons of cheap-looking dramas featuring little more than (horribly) simulated sex were shown (think Emanuelle Goes To Mars or Pleasure Spa). Today, Cinemax offers a host of original late-night shows that manage to be both smart and sexy. Among the best on its roster are the witty “The Girl's Guide To Depravity,” which takes a whimsical and honest look at women

TECHNOBEAT: ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL UPDATE

S

o, last time here I talked a bit about Ultra Music Festival, and named a few of the artists that would be making appearances. Now it’s time to go a little more in depth and bring more details on the event. First off, we need the date and location. And for that, Ultra will take place on

Zomboy

March 28, 29, and 30 at Bayfront Park in Miami. Who doesn’t like Florida, right? Anyway, it’s sure to be a great time when you have the atmosphere that Ultra brings. Imagine yourself set in sunny Miami, it’s 85 degrees with a brisk wind. All you hear is good music, all you see are beautiful people and crazy outfits, and all you feel is an overall positive vibe. It’s pretty much the place you’ve been waiting all your whole life to see. There’s just some-

thing about Ultra that has this mystical vibe to it, almost as if it’s so surreal. There are so many stages and so many artists from so many different genres all playing at the same time and you don’t even know what to do. Last year was Ultra’s 15th anniversary, and they did it up big – which leads me to wonder what could possibly top that; it’s one of the reasons I’m very excited for this year.

For the first time, Ultra is putting together a compilation of select songs from artists performing at Ultra 2014. Pre-sale is curBorgore rently available at Amazon.com and is set to release on March 4. The compilation includes some already big hits such as “Dare You” by Hardwell feat. Matthew Koma, “Legacy” by Nicky Romero, “Boneless” by Steve Aoki, and some lesser known, yet great, songs like “Mosh Pit” by Flosstradamus and “Faith” by Blasterjaxx. In addition to that, Ultra will be selling a mini-mag called the

“Ultra Music Festival 2014 Fan Pack” at Best Buy starting March 4. Inside, readers will find exclusive interviews with Kaskade, Carl Cox, Flosstradamus, Above and Beyond, and Martin Garrix. It will also include never before seen pictures from last year’s festival. The kicker is that this mini-mag will also come with the Ultra Compilation mentioned above. After to going to Ultra last year, I wondered how they could make the line up any better, but they’ve managed to do a great job this year with it. On the roster is almost every artist that I could ever want to see. That’s exactly what you have to do if you want a successful music festival. They have all the EDM genres covered and more! They are going to have performances from Waka Flocka, Zomboy, Chance The Rapper, Clockwork, Dirtyphonics, Infected Mushroom, Alesso, Avicii, Adventure Club, Kaskade, Borgore, Carnage, Dillon Francis, Datsik, Crizzly, Brillz, Jamie Jones, Candyland ... and that’s just to name a few of them! Keep your heads up

for Phase 3 lineup, which will be coming soon! This year will boast six massive stages all throughout the park. It is a layout that can get crowded sometimes, Adventure which is Club why they are opening up more space for walking from stage to stage and everywhere in between. They will also be housing water stations for thirsty concert goers to stay hydrated. This year will also be the debut of a duo called Jack U, a combination of Diplo and Skrillex, sure to be a power group spitting out hit after hit. I’m curious to see how their two musical styles blend into the one entity. There’s much more info coming out about Ultra each day, and I’ll be sure to come back with more for you next issue! Feel free to contact me at richiegtechno@gmail.com. For more: ultramusicfestival.com. Keep raging my friends!

RHYTHM TRACKING

Yoko Ono

0 Years Of The Beatles: I was 13 years old in 1965, brought up in a very traditional, straight laced, uptight household. Old ways were good, new ways were bad. Needless to say, the arrival of The Beatles in America was very bad, a sure sign of the decline of the USA. The haircuts, the music, the screaming girls, the celebration of lust, and all the zaniness was just a bit too much in the LaLumia household. Being the “different” one in the family, I naturally was drawn to the “Fab Four” and everything that came along for the ride. Fashion, sexuality, the dragging along of black culture through the R&B/Motown that The Beatles loved, all of these were seen as signs of imminent subversion. Their fab manager, the late Brian Epstein, was a flaming gay man who got the boys their haircuts, squeezed them into those tight pants, and let them loose on the world. It was Epstein who turned them on to Motown, got them to do those cover versions, and took Mary Wells on tour with them while "My Guy" was number one on the charts. The 13-year-old me instinctively knew that something major was happening, and it was all aimed at me. I became an obsessive Top 40 radio fan ("77, W-A-Beatle-C!"), and bought 16 Magazine religiously each month (a few years later, the 20-something me got to interview Cousin Brucie and Murray The K,

both right on top of the 1964 Ed Sullivan-period explosion. I also got to interview, and then became friends, with Gloria Stavers, who plastered The Beatles on the cover of every issue of the aforementioned 16 Magazine. Thank you, Gloria. As the 60s progressed and The Beatles changed, I changed with them – long hair, drugs, concept albums ... Yoko! I loved and lived it all, as a card carrying member of the UK Fan Club, getting the yearly Christmas records and magazines (how I wish I had saved all that stuff). Concurrent with my devotion to Motown and The Supremes in the 60s, The Beatles were always right there for me ... and then it was 1970 and The Beatles broke up (at the same moment that Diana Ross leaves The Supremes for a solo career). Being a kid in the 1960s, as pop

culture changed, was an experience that can never be explained, and I'm happy I lived it. Thank you, Beatles.

I got to interview Cousin Brucie and Murray The K, both right on top of the 1964 Ed Sullivan-period explosion. Happy 50th to those still with us, and to those who are not.

The Montauk Project Today, Metro Area, Tomorrow, The World

Who: Area favorite The Montauk Project seems ready to take on the rest of the nation with the release of its new album. The Artists & Their Sound: From the band’s official bio: “Not to be confused with the mysterious U.S. Government psychological experiments conducted at Camp Hero in the 1980s, The Montauk Project is a group of music school-trained mavericks from Long Island’s East End. Started by high school friends Mark Schiavoni (guitar, vocals) and Jasper Conroy (drums, backing vocals), who reunited after returning home from college, the band’s classic rock arrangement is rounded out by Chris Wood (bass) and Jack Marshall (lead guitar). “Steeped in the tradition of musical giants such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Jimi Hendrix, The Montauk Project use their sophisticated ears and serious chops

to bring the energy and originality of classic rock to a modern context. Having worked the New York City club circuit (Webster Hall, Arlene’s Grocery, Bowery Electric) and beyond, the band built their own studio, where they self-produced, engineered, and recorded their forthcoming album, Belly Of The Beast. Featuring deep groves, thought provoking lyrics, and searing guitar solos, the album’s intricate, hard-hitting sound lives up to the enigmatic connotations of the band’s name and their self-described genre, ‘Beach Grunge.’ “Stay posted as The Montauk Project continues to take stages by storm in anticipation of the album’s release in March 2014.” To Learn More/ Contact The Band: Facebook: facebook.com/ themontaukproject, or Twitter: @themontaukproj.

What more could you ask for after this crazy cold winter we are having?” More corn: “This tour will have the best vocalists and guitarists on the road today,” said Felder. “The sheer volume of our combined catalogs is massive and should satisfy any rock & roll fan, and rock them until they can’t walk out of the place.” Early returns are strong; rumors are more shows may be slated soon.

Have X-Star Fantasies?

Hot & Bothered:

Ever dream of acting out your fantasies with the same adult film stars that you watch to ... well, act out your fantasies? Adult products store AdamAndEve.com is never shy: This month, the company asked more than

1,000 adults if they would ever have sex with an adult star. While 33.3 percent of respondents admitted they would have sex with an adult star, 66.7 percent said they would not. Forty percent of the male respondents said they would have sex with an adult star, compared to only 10 percent of female respondents. Dr. Kat Van Kirk, resident sexpert for AdamAndEve.com, said, "Unfortunately, society still has a double standard when it comes to adult performers. While most of us are happy to help adult stars earn their livings – and many of us can name a variety of today's top stars – we still look down upon adult performers for the choices they make." The survey was sponsored by Adam & Eve to study sexual preferences and practices. "Sex Chat with Dr. Kat" can be found on podcasts through iTunes or drkat.com. Her new book is The Married Sex Solution: A Realistic Guide to Saving Your Sex Life.
