hile the New York Knicks’ Jason poor season garnered the Kidd attention of newspapers and sports talk radio in New York, the Brooklyn Nets and head coach Jason Kidd have quietly gone about their business. The first two months of the Nets season were as disastrous as that of their crosstown rivals, but as soon as the calendar turned to 2014 the Nets started winning games. Ironically, the team’s upturn occurred after they lost arguably their best player, center Brook Lopez, who yet again suffered a foot injury that required surgery. Kidd has proven to be a master at giving the right amount of minutes to veterans Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Joe Johnson while utilizing younger players Marcus Thornton and Mason Plumlee to spell them without a noticeable drop-off in production. If surly point guard Deron Williams could live up to what was expected of him when he signed a max contract two years ago, the Nets would be considered an elite NBA team. Former Knicks Landry Fields and Steve Novak were in Brooklyn to play the Nets two weeks ago, and both admitted that they have been following the bizarre goings-on with their old team; they both noted that they felt badly for Knicks head coach Mike Woodson. Aside from paying more taxes by working in Canada, both players are understandably enjoying life a lot more playing for the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors. Madison Square Garden has long been known as “the Mecca of basketball,” and you can’t blame Knicks fans for wincing a bit when they hear that
By Lloyd Carroll phrase – but the Garden is certainly getting its share of college hoops action this year. Earlier this month, it played host to the Big East Tournament (sadly, the Big East Conference is a shell of itself from its 1980s and ‘90s glory days), while the NCAA Eastern Regionals will take place at MSG on March 28 and 30. The poor man’s Final Four, the National Invitational Tournament, comes into MSG April 1 and April 3. New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow traded Matt Moulson and a number of draft picks to the Buffalo Sabres for left winger Thomas Vanek in spite of the fact that Vanek would be a free agent at the end of this season. Snow seemed to be gambling that Vanek would sign a long-term contract with the Isles. Unfortunately, Vanek rejected all of his offers, and Snow was forced to trade him to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a fraction of what Snow gave to get him in the first place. If this were a tax return, Snow’s trade would be classified as a short-term capital loss with negative carryover implications for years to come. chunk of the 2013 season and never appeared to be in sync with QB Geno Smith when he was playing. One reason why professional boxing has long been in trouble is that the sport’s promoters and cable partners are eager to put too many of their fight cards on pay-per-view. I am not against maximizing profits, but the problem is that boxing has not expanded its fan base, and promoters and cable executives seem to keep expecting the same customers to shell out $49.95 monthly – including cards when superstar fighters aren’t on the bill. A good case in point is the June 7 Miguel CottoSergio Martinez middleweight title fight at Madison Square Garden. This will be a competitive fight featuring two good boxers, but neither is a household name to the masses. Cotto is an oldlooking 33, while Martinez is 39 – although he still has dashing good looks. Think of this as the real life version of last December’s fight flop film, The Grudge, that featured Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone as two old brawlers looking for a

last big payday. I asked promoter and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum if he was concerned about whether the pay-per-view demand is there for this fight, and might it not be a better idea to broadcast it on regular HBO as a way of enticing sports fans who may not be boxing fans interested in the sport. Arum loudly retorted “that I did not know what the f–k I was talking about” and that he does not care about “marginal sports fans.” As luck would have it, Bernard Hopkins was in town the following day to promote his light heavyweight championship fight with Biebut Shumenov on April 19 at the Armory in DC. The delightful Hopkins, who will be 50 next January but still looks the same as he did 20 years ago, agreed with my assessment that the over-reliance on pay-per-view has hurt the growth of boxing. He took pride in pointing out that his bout will be telecast on Antonio Showtime. Cromartie Michelle Beadle, whose “Crossover” show on the NBC Sports Network was an unmitigated flop, has quietly returned to the site of her greatest success, ESPN 2’s “Sports Nation.” This will possibly be the last year that roving reporter Kevin Burkhardt will be part of SNY’s Mets broadcast team; he recently signed a deal to host Fox Sports 1’s new nightly Los Angeles-based baseball show. Fox executives obviously liked the job he did on NFL telecasts during his first year with the network.

300: Rise Of An Empire
Starring Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, and Rodrigo Santoro Directed by Noam Murro Warner Brothers
After the fall of King Leonidas and the brave 300, Xerxes (Santoro) and his Persian horde, led by his vengeful commander Artemisia (Green), stand poised to annihilate all of Greece. It falls to the Athenian hero of Marathon Themistokles (Stapleton) and his tiny, overmatched navy to oppose them — but will their courage and sacrifice rally free Greece to their cause in time to spare them all a watery tomb? Seven years after the release of 300, Xerxes, Queen Gorgo (Headey), Ephialtes (Andrew Tiernan), and a whole new host of beefcake are back for more bloody fun in the ancient world. Like The Godfather: Part II, 300: Rise Of An Empire serves as both prequel and sequel to the first film, and an unusual confluence of production and scheduling exigencies (related primarily, it seems, to Frank Miller’s involvement in the production of the Sin City follow-up) has it showing up in theaters well before the graphic novels are completed. For the fanboys, it marks an early kickoff to a hotly anticipated summer season of action and sci-fi films. For the merely curious, it’s the video game looking thing from those omnipresent commercials with that Black Sabbath song. For everyone else, there’s always Mr. Peabody & Sherman.
Rise Of An Empire serves up in great heaps nearly everything its predecessor offered: ecstatic, hyper-stylized visuals; bombast in the extreme (a potentially good thing, the grandiloquence of the first film having been a huge part of its audacious charm); and unapologetic violence, all steeped in a veritable ocean of machismo. It is gleefully bloody; compared to the first films mere buckets of the stuff, this is the dancing fountain at the Bellagio. Where 300 was intimate, restricted as was the
HEADLINERS
Persian army by the terrain of Thermopylae, Rise Of An Empire is vast, depicting huge fleets of ships crashing into one another on roiling seas. And therein lies its Achilles’ heel, as it’s not as relatable as the first film. While this is certainly a function of scale – watching immense vessels batter each other into kindling is awe-inspiring – it lacks the visceral thrill of seeing one man, hopelessly outnumbered and facing certain death, hack his way to glory through a maelstrom of whirling steel. It is also attributable to the ridiculous performances of the leads. Stapleton is wooden and uninspiring as Themistokles, and he seems completely overtaken by the notion that excessive volume can somehow pass for conviction. Eva Green is entirely too camp to be badass, and in a film that plays its types this straight, that’s a formula for guffaws. Not that the actors have a lot to work with; the dialogue here consists mostly of pseudo-philosophical claptrap masquerading as profundities and ponderous speechifying. In comparison to the prodigious quotability and sheer brass of 300 (“This is Sparta!” not only became the subject of innumerable uproarious GIFs and made its way into the Urban Dictionary, it was referenced in everything from “The Daily Show” to “Robot Chicken”), it’s like listening to Ben Stein read the phonebook. Here’s hoping Zack Snyder and company elevate their game for what seems the inevitable third installment. If only for the spectacle, 300: Rise Of An Empire is worth a look. Will it ever be mentioned alongside such hallowed second chapters as The Empire Strikes Back and The Two Towers? Not bloody likely. – Michael Lee

Coldplay
THE GOOD TIMES LIST: EPIC FLOPS & DUDS
Lady Gaga: At press time, Gaga’s poor-selling ArtPop album was being blamed by several business journals for a terrible 2013 fourth quarter for Universal Music Group. When she hosted “Saturday Night Live,” people raved – but it’s been all downhill from there. Justin Bieber: When the Canadian and American Olympic hockey teams – and the citizens of both countries – make an unofficial pact that “the loser keeps Bieber,” it tells you everything you need to know. His recent singles have all been bombs as well. It doesn’t help that most recent headlines paint him as a douchebag. Robin Thicke: Still waiting for that follow-up; hope daddy Alan is giving his meagerly talented child of privilege investment strategies. Bruce Springsteen: Too many tracks on his newest album, High Hopes, make “Outlaw Pete” sound like “Born To Run.” The album languished at #48 on the Billboard Top 200 at press time. Ruben Studdard: New album an utter phhht; Arby’s new Ruben sandwich got more press. Arcade Fire: Reflektor was no The Suburbs. How ironic.

n Monday, May 19, British rock superstars Coldplay will release their sixth album, Ghost Stories, via Parlophone/Atlantic Records. Fans can pre-order the new Ghost Stories disc now; a deluxe CD edition of the album featuring three bonus tracks is available from Target at target.com/ coldplay. The album can also be pre-ordered now from iTunes at iTunes.com/Coldplay. Fans who pre-order Ghost Stories will receive an instant download of the first single from the album, “Magic.” The single can also be streamed at YouTube.com/coldplay. Back on the boards and ready to perform for the first time in years, Coldplay headlined the opening night of the first US iTunes Festival at South By
Southwest on March 11. The performance streamed live and on-demand worldwide for free via the iTunes Store. The new album’s track list: “Always In My Head,” “Magic,” “Ink,” “True Love,” “Midnight,” “Another’s Arms,” “Oceans,” “A Sky Full Of Stars,”and “O.” Ghost Stories marks Coldplay’s first new album in
quite a spell. The last studio disc was Mylo Xyloto in 2011; 2012 brought a live CD/DVD package featuring the superstar group in its concert best. Now, Coldplay – lead singer Chris Martin, guitarist Johnny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will
Champion – take on a new effort with a decidedly different array of sounds this time out, according to industry wags who have heard a few of the cuts. Coldplay has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and won numerous awards, including seven Grammy® Awards, six Brit Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards. The band’s 2008 album, Viva La Vida, charted at #1 in 36 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Coldplay headlined numerous festivals in the months leading up to their last album’s release, including stops in the U.S. at Lollapalooza in Chicago, Austin City Limits Festival, The iHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas, and Atlanta’s Music Midtown. No word yet on future touring plans, but if the past is any indication of the future, this major act will likely take part in another world trek before too long.

CHART BEAT: VETERANS ON FIRE
Beck is back in a big way. His new album, Morning Phase (Capitol), entered the U.S. albums chart at #3, selling more 87,000 copies in the week following its February 25 release. Morning Phase’s first week tally bests the 84,314 opening week of Beck’s previous album, Modern Guilt, despite the market Photo: being down more than 70 Peter Hapak percent since that record’s 2008 release. Morning Phase also debuted #2 in Canada, #4 in the UK, #5 in Australia, Switzerland, and The Netherlands, and #8 in New Zealand – all representing Beck’s highest chart positions ever in each country, with the exception of Canada, where Morning Phase ties the #2 peak position of 2005’s Guero. Beck will perform on April 1 on “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” which should add hundreds of thousands of copies to his tallies … With his seventh studio album, Riser, singer/songwriter and country music superstar Dierks Bentley earned the #1 position on the Billboard Country Albums chart upon its debut. Riser also marks his fifth career debut in the top spot on the country charts. Bentley will begin a nationalwide tour to support the new disc on May 9 … Area darlings Bayside’s new album, Cult, landed in at #24 for Billboard’s Top 200 Albums – the highest chart debut of their career. Even more impressive: Bayside topped the Vinyl Chart at #1, which marks Hopeless Records’ first ever topping of that category.

Here TV is also available as a YouTube paid channel. Berland’s Work: In recent weeks, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) kids from the streets of Russia to communities around the world have seen a country arresting its own citizens for being gay and witnessed a father of a talented NFL draft pick express his disapproval when Michael Sam Jr. came out as gay. Safe Harbor coach to the LGBT community, Susan Berland, expresses that this is not the message we want to send to LGBT young people. “Reading Michael Sam, Sr.’s response to his son’s coming out breaks my heart,” Berland said. “I know first-hand the long-term impact that kind of response has on LGBT kids. It affects their self-esteem and can lead to depression and substance abuse.” Today, Berland coaches parents and their LGBT kids with the goal to build a bridge to acceptance and understanding. Berland believes it is possible to move past the space of confusion and rejection. For parents who love their child and want to understand, there are tools available to move toward acceptance and understanding. “Love denied is a tragedy, and it is time to bring in the healing,” Berland said. Community groups, anti-bullying organizations, and families around the world can download Berland’s “A.C.C.E.P.T. Manifesto” to share. regular subject online these days is the death of the album. It’s a cause of concern for older folks and not of the slightest interest to the younger ones – but then, why would it be? The current consumer grew up with Napster and all the illegal download sites that emerged within minutes of each other worldwide. There was no need to go to the record store, no worry about something being sold out – in fact, no need to worry about not having enough money to get all the latest tunes that you wanted. It was heaven, wasn’t it? For many, it still is. Eventually, iTunes, Amazon, and other sites popped up where you could actually buy things, and believe it or not, people did. However, in this brave new world,if you liked a song, you could buy the song instantly, and nothing else. The event of “the album” was a thing of the past. In classic rock days, there was no single released from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; you bought the entire album or you got nothing. You really wanted “Stairway To Heaven”? Well, Led Zeppelin made it clear to their label, Atlantic Records, that the tune was not to be released as a single; you had to buy the entire album. In these cases, it was no problem; the albums were iconic moments in pop music history, and everyone knew every track, what was on side one and on side two. This was the era

of vinyl, and things continued into the cassette/8-Track era. When the compact disc came along, things got fuzzy … and greedy. The labels charged a fortune for CDs back then – $15, $16 – and they began to not release singles, or even discontinue singles when they became popular; “Ice Ice Baby” and “Can’t Touch This” were two prime examples. Soon, hit songs by The Fugees (“Killing Me Softly”) and No Doubt (“Don’t Speak”) were not released as singles at all; you had to buy the expensive CD (or, if you had connections, a bootleg mix tape). Into this perfect storm soon came the Internet, Napster, illegal sites, and the rest is history. You take the tracks you want, albums be damned. Sure, CDs still sell, but at a fraction of the amounts that hit albums used to before the MP3/downloads revolution. As a result, bonding with an artist while listening to an entire album has become a thing of the past, as has the collecting of favorite artists. For most, it is now the collecting of songs, and when those songs burn out, they are gone; nostalgia is decidedly not in these days. Is it sad? Yes, it is in a way, but those who grew up in the past two

Singularly Or As A Duo, An Original Musical Force
Who: Michael and Kristina Rocco are a multi-facted Long Island-based musical couple who have released several albums as solo artists, as a duo, and as members of several groups. The Artists & Their Sound: From their bio: “Kristina Rocco is a tenured high school teacher from Long Island, New York, and holds a Master of Arts degree. When she’s not teaching, you’ll find her singing on stage or in studio. From a young age, Kristina’s life would be dominated by her musical aspirations. As a high school student, she was a member of numerous theater companies including The Long Island Performing Arts Center (now The Spotlight Players) and The James Street Players. Yes, they are, but ultimately technology is the foot soldier of progress, and there’s really nothing to be done about it – but those of us of a certain age, we’ll always have The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, sides one and two.

Seaport, Disney World’s main stage, Universal Studios, Epcot, and Niagara Falls. As a senior, Kristina was voted ‘most likely be famous’ by her high school classmates. “However, it wasn’t until she met her husband, Michael Rocco, that she began her career as a recording artist. Kristina met Michael (now her manager and producer) in 2002 during a theater production at Staller Center at Stony Brook University. Ironically, they played the roles of husband and wife. Four years later, they were married. Michael was already composing music as a solo artist and for independent movies and theater productions. Merging Kristina’s beautiful voice and showmanship with Michael’s stellar composing and unwavering vision, The Roccos began recording music under the name Trail Of Stones. “Their first album, 11:11, was released in June 2006, and was actually used as wedding favors. In 2007, TOS recorded their first pop album, The Answer. This album featured a remake of the classic ‘You Don’t Own Me.’ Although the album boasted rave reviews, Kristina and Michael were unhappy with the artistic direction in which they were heading. Their last TOS album, Bird On The Line, was released in August 2009. At that time, Kristina and Michael started performing as The Roccos. In 2010, they formed the hard rock band Blackout Parade and toured the tri-state area. In 2012, their doom metal project Herodias was born, earning Kristina and Michael international success. The same year, The Roccos released an album, The Way Home, followed by a regional tour. In 2013, Kristina released the album The Tower.” The new studio album Oil & Clay by The Roccos will be released in early 2014, followed by a live performance in honor of P.S. I Love You Day and The Alexis Pilkington Memorial Foundation. “Kristina and Michael currently live in Ronkonkoma with their two cats.” To Learn More About The Artists: Find The Roccos at theroccos.net, Twitter.com/ theroccos1, or find them on Facebook.

Chipotle: #1 For All The Right Reasons
There’s little question that Chipotle Mexican Grill, now an international sensation, has set the new standard for casual dining chains – and not just for its huge number of locations and the vast success it is experiencing. For taste, dining experience, value, and quality, Chipotle has done something never seen before in the chain restaurant industry: It offers quality food, all of the time. And if you can claim with a straight face that you’ve eaten at McDonald’s, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Wendy’s and have never had a substandard meal, we’d bet you have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell us as well. The lack of quality in the fast food industry has long been a national punchline; the number-two burger chain, Wendy’s, routinely uses faux competitor’s food in its ads to attempt to prove how much better and fresher its menu items are. The truth of the matter is that mass-produced food brings massproduced results: Cold items, overcooked (or scarier yet, undercooked) selections, wrong orders, you name it. The fact that even the biggest fast food chains seem to want to keep
STARGAZING
even full-time employees in minimum wage hell, and you get an underskilled, disinterested, unhappy work force that’s in charge of making your lunch. Good heavens. It doesn’t seem that way at Chipotle, which is experiencing growth in an industry that’s struggling to keep such chains as Ruby Tuesday and the hideous Olive Garden/Red Lobster duo alive. The reason is that Chipotle is a wellthought out small restaurant with fresh, tasty food – that’s all that most customers are seeking in the first place. On a recent Sunday afternoon, we went to three different Chipotle
locations in Long Island. All had long (but fast-moving) lines, filled tables, and a general upbeat, youthful vibe. It sure beats the moribund area Burger Kings, where slow-moving counter staffs offer one of the moribund menus in the land, just multi-patty arteryclogging nonsense. Here’s the difference with Chipotle: All the restaurants are company owned, not franchised; many of their menu offerings are actually healthy (with the glaring

exception of, say, a steak burrito with the works, which could feed two people); and the food is the type that can be prepared right before your eyes, sometimes in less than one minute. And, gum by darn, it’s really good. We recently stopped by the location in New Hyde Park and enjoyed a steak burrito, a salad with pulled pork, and a side of chips with salsa. We can’t think of a chain restaurant meal we’ve enjoyed even half as much during the past five years. It isn’t faux Mexican-style food, a la Taco Bell – a burrito at Chipotle actually tastes like a burrito. Chipotle boasts of its organically grown produce and natural meats, and one taste proves those claims aren’t just hype. Even the chips are made daily. And to think – Chipotle will soon add healthier items, including a tofu “sofrita” to its menu. Chipotle isn’t a bargain joint – lunch for two is around $20 if ordering larger items – but, obviously, people don’t mind paying for excellent quality. How successful is Chipotle? At press time, it’s stock price was more than $500 per share. Chipotle is the new standard for chain restaurants, and we can state that it more than deserves its crown.

The Alllman Brothers Band: The Road Goes On ... 45 Years
Celebrating its 45th anniversary as a working group, The Allman Brothers Band is in the midst of its sold-out run at New York City’s Beacon Theatre, with total of 14 sold-out shows running through March 29. In conjunction with this milestone anniversary, Epic/Legacy Records and the band have issued live archival CD and DVD releases. In its first week of release, the CD Play All Night: Live At The Beacon Theatre 1992 entered the Billboard Top 200 Chart at #43, as well as the Billboard Rock Chart at #12. At the same time, the DVD release of Live At Great Woods has vaulted onto the Billboard Top DVD Chart at #3. More Allmans news: The veteran band surpassed the 1,000,000 milestone mark on Facebook (“We are honored so many of our fans want to be in touch with us. Facebook has enabled us to communicate with them in real time,” said the group in a press release).
Tegan & Sara are still on fire. This past year was a huge one for Canadian-born twin sisters, with the release of the girls’ seventh studio album, Heartthrob, which scored their highest first week charting position yet. They also Tegan scored their first & Sara mainstream hit with “Closer” and circled the globe on tour. Next up, the duo is taking off to sea with the equally red-hot Paramore as part of the Parahoy! cruise concert, then accompanying Katy Perry on the last leg of her international tour.
