Full Bunny Contact: It’s Extreme Easter

“Full Bunny Contact” is a weekend-long Easter festival with a decidedly twisted and whimsical take on the traditional spring fair. Wander the grounds and participate in games and activities with a main event that pits New Yorkers against “hardcore bunnies” in an Easter egg hunt for the ages. The event features a midway, game booths, food trucks, a deejay, an on-site bar, and live entertainment, and will run from April 17 through 20 at The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, located at 107 Suffolk Street (between Rivington and Delancey Streets.) in New York City’s lower east side. Info: fullbunnycontact.com. “This is pure, silly, fun with an element of sport,” said creator Timothy Haskell. “A four day celebration where you can race an actual rabbit while wearing a giant tortoise shell, or pull candy right out of the Easter bunnies butt, or show off your flag football moves as you try in vain to collect Easter eggs. New Yorkers love to celebrate holidays, and FBC combines the familiar with the extreme.”

Forest Hills Stadium

SAD? DON’T BE SILLY

Things change, but just because some old-timey things are going away doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. Time marches on, so why are you upset about: Roseland: One of New York’s most famous small venues was also among its most overrated, with terrible sight lines and sound that harkened back to tinny drive-in movie speakers. If it hadn’t been in Manhattan, this converted skating rink wouldn’t have any any sort of reputation whatsoever as a “top venue.” It was originally known as “Roseland Ballroom,” but the only thing that had a ball there was its infamous cockroach population. Canal Room: Once a haven for original music, this club’s final days were as a faux oldies joint featuring beyond-awful 80s and 90s music tributes (The Bayside Tigers, Jessie’s Girl) that didn’t look or sound like any act from the 80s or 90s we can think of. Radio Shack: You’re honestly going to miss those otherwise unemployable stiffs who never knew the difference between a micro and mini USB cable and then tried to sell you a satellite dish when you only wanted a four-pack of AA batteries?

he promoters for Forest Hills Stadium (foresthillsstadium.com), the sporting and entertainment venue hidden in the Queens neighborhood of Forest Hills, have announced the venue’s 2014 concert season. The upcoming season will feature a mix of stars from the music and entertainment worlds, including a performance by three-time Grammy winners and multi-platinum artists The Zac Brown Band on Saturday, June 21. Tickets to all 2014 Forest Hills The Zac Stadium events are available exclusively via ticketfly.com; more events will be announced soon. During August last year, Forest Hills Stadium featured an inaugural performance by Mumford & Sons on their “Full English” tour. The concert, the first in the stadium in more than 15 years, brought music fans from all over the world to Queens to experience live music in a unique environment. Since then, the stadium has undergone a restoration,

Hello, Putt Putt People: Rocket Park Mini Golf Returns

One of the most popular activities at The New York Hall of Science in Corona – yes, the facility offers outdoor-themed events as well as its popular indoor exhibits during the warm weather months – is Rocket Park Mini Golf, featured on weekends from 10 am to 6 pm. This event is ongoing. The same laws of motion and gravity that guide the path of a spaceship control the motion of golf balls here on Earth. Admission is $6 for adults plus general NYSCI admission, $5 for children and seniors plus general NYSCI admission. For more information on this and other events, visit nysci.org.

From Billie Jean King to The Beatles, Jimmy Connors to Jimi Hendrix, Chris Evert to The Rolling Stones – for decades the stadium at the West Side Tennis Club was not only host of the U.S. Open, it was also a renowned music venue, tucked into a leafy neighborhood of stately homes in Queens’ Forest Hills neighborhood. However, when the U.S. Open moved to larger space in Flushing, Queens in 1977, the architecturally stunning, horseshoe-shaped Forest Hills Stadium fell into disrepair and its days as a music venue faded. In 2013, concert promoters partnered with the West Side Tennis Club to rehabilitate the stadium and bring events back to this storied venue. After the inaugural concert by Mumford & Sons last August, the stadium will return this summer with a full slate of entertainment programming. The 2014 concert season will be sponsored by Citi with additional support from Heineken. The Zac Brown Band’s latest project, The Grohl Sessions Vol. 1, is out now on Southern Ground; it follows the band’s three platinumselling albums Uncaged, You Get What You Give, and The Foundation, which have together sold over six million copies and produced a historic series of 11 #1 hit singles. The Georgia band makes its Queens debut here.

Ultra Music Fest Scores Big

Adventure Club

What’s going on New York? I’m relaxing here in beautiful Miami after a pretty hectic weekend, known to some as Ultra Music Festival and to others as the best weekend of their life. The crowds were crazy, the shows were crazy, the environment was perfect, the weather was great (except for a little rain on Saturday night). It was all of the perfect elements mixed together at the perfect time. If you weren’t at the festival, keep reading on to find out how it went. If you were at the festival, however, also keep reading on to see how it went. The day started out on Friday with the juices pumping through my body, ready to get some EDM into my system after having waited several months to be at Ultra and experience the magic. The festival started at 4 pm on Friday, so that gave me the time before that to eat and prepare and relax. I started off the day with a favorite of mine, Zomboy. From the moment I walked near the stage, I could feel the beat bumping and the dirty, grimy dubstep hitting me in the face. He also managed to play two of my favorite songs: Gunn Finga by Eptic and Terror Squad by Zomboy. Also, it was pretty early in the day so there weren’t that many people there, giving me the whole area to myself to go hard. This was easily on of my favorite acts of the day. This day was also packed with tons of acts I loved; Adventure Club, Datsik, Borgore, Carnage It was the best day of the weekend and all of them went hard. I will say that my favorite act of the weekend was Borgore and I cannot stop listening to his set over and over again. And lucky enough for me, I got to sit down with some artists and talk to them about their Ultra experience and their EDM careers in general. First people of the day were the dub duo Adventure Club. I talked to them about some recent songs they had produced and where they were looking to take their style. We always want to stick with what is the adventure core but we kind of want to

big things from them in the future. After The Chainsmokers I got to speak with Vello Virkhaus who is the CEO and Creative Director of V Square Labs, the visual production company that ran the main stage of Ultra and has since almost its beginning. While up in the VJ booth, I got to experience what they do during a set and it’s the equivalent of DJing, expect with animation. Without getting too technical, they’ve been making some major leaps and bounds in the industry and have condensed their racks and systems from an entire wall, to a small 4 foot tall box that not only houses all the processing equipment they need, but is also the fastest in the industry. You’re just plugging in, no one is losing sync, and everything is timed out and just running the entire show. They’re running graphics like they never have before and can provide the crowds with high definition and high-speed eye opening visuals. I would highly recommend going online and checking out V Squared Labs and all of the other shows and events they have worked on. It’s really incredible how big their range of operation is. Day 3 was not quite as bumping as the other days. It was a very trance and progressive house heavy day, which is not what I’m really into. I would say that the highlight of the day had to come with Hardwell’s Ultra closing performance on main stage. I’ve never seen such a connection between the DJ, the lights, the music, and the people before. Everything was on point and he delivered a memorable performance, filled with the hits and the vocals and the sounds that everyone wanted and would expect from a top level DJ. All I can say is that Ultra 2014 was a memorable experience and I can’t wait for Ultra 2015 next year! For any questions and comments, feel free to contact me at richiegtechno@gmail.com. Remember to keep raging my friends!

ow that Madison Square Phil Garden CEO James Dolan has Jackson hired “The Lord of the Rings,” Phil Jackson, to be the new New York Knicks president (Jackson has earned six NBA championship rings as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls; five in the same role for the Los Angeles Lakers; and a pair as a bench player for the Knicks) and has promised to grant as much autonomy to him as an owner can, it will be interesting to see whether the media will finally stop bashing Dolan. At the Jackson press conference, Dolan acknowledged that he has been far from adept at running a basketball team. The most obvious bad decision on his part was firing Donnie Walsh as the team’s general manager without having a suitable replacement ready to take his place. The reason for Walsh’s ouster was seemingly that Walsh did not want to give up a king’s ransom to get Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets. Given Anthony’s outstanding play since coming to the Knicks, it’s easy to understand Dolan’s desire to meet Denver’s asking price three years ago. It’s funny how that “man of the people,” New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica, loves to beat up on Dolan any chance that can – yet it’s hard to recall Lupica writing a negative word about Mets CEO Fred Wilpon or his son, team chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, even though the Mets have not had a winning season in five years (a streak that

Jay Horwitz, the Mets’ longtime Vice President of Media Relations, was upset that he caught Harvey speaking with Daily News baseball scribe Andy Martino during spring training. Mets brass wishes that Harvey would not plead his case with the media about rushing back to pitch in 2014 when doctors have advised him to wait until 2015. Horowitz was rightfully concerned that other sportswriters would be incensed if they couldn’t access to Harvey. As a sportswriter, I should be cheering for Harvey for wanting to talk to the fourth estate. Unfortunately from what I have seen of him in the Mets clubhouse, Harvey’s behavior is a variation of the old axiom: “He learns to say hello when it’s time to say goodbye.” Last year when he was the toast of the town, I felt as if there was an

electric fence around his locker when I deigned to talk to him. If he did respond to one of my questions, it was with a halting two-word answer at best. Obviously, I wasn’t an important member of the media to majestic Matt. Just as the origin of baseball has long been in dispute, so apparently is that of surfing. A spokesperson from the Northern California town of Santa Cruz, which has the oldest boardwalk in the United States, claims that the first surfer caught waves at its beach in 1885. With all due respect to picturesque and hip Santa Cruz, the Orange County city of Huntington Beach will always be far more identified with surfing because it’s mentioned in The Beach Boys’ early hit “Surfin’ Safari.” It also helps that Dean Torrance of Jan & Dean fame (they had a #1 hit with “Surf City” in 1963) makes his home there. By accident, we discovered a true gem in Merrick, Souper Fry, a small neighborhood joint that delivers major league taste with an inventive combination of Big Boy Burgers, Wraps, customized salads, hand cut fries and delicious home made soups. The best of several worlds was “The Farley” a half lb Angus burger with pulled pork, crispy onions and cheddar cheese. This baby just oozes flavor and it’s a strong contender for one of the best burgers on the Island. Ditto the “AB”, a majestic concoction of half lb burger, onion ring, mushrooms and A-1 sauce. The cost for these treasures....$6.50. Yes, you heard me right. Not since the days of Frank N Burger in Smithtown have we had such value. For the sake of research, and for no other reason of course, we also ordered “The Juan Epstein” Wrapini with corned beef, roasted pork, swiss cheese, sliced pickles

eteran rocker and TV star Bret Michaels will bring his “Life Rocks Tour” to Mulcahy’s Pub & Concert Hall in Wantagh on Friday, May 2; advance tickets are now available via Mulcahy’s box office or TicketWeb.com. For more information, log on to muls.com. As a rock star, reality star, spokesperson, businessman, and philanthropist, Michaels does more jobs in a single day than most people do in an entire lifetime. Depending on the hour of the day, he’s a cultural icon, a rock god, an entrepreneur, a TV star, a father, the face of the American Diabetes Association, a supercross enthusiast, solo artist, Poison frontman, and a generous donor to a myriad of charitable causes. Michaels first rose to fame as the frontman of Poison, an act that surely defined the fast, gritty, and glamorous rock & roll scene of the 1980s. Since the band’s beginning, Poison has achieved massive success, releasing eight studio albums and four live

Michaels’ solo career has been

Veronica Mars

the record-setting Kickstarter campaign that got the movie funded. As such, you would have received all sorts of updates, exclusives, and sneak peeks during production; hell, depending on your enthusiasm, you might actually be in the bloody thing (this is not hyperbole; numerous contributors to the crowdfunding effort appear in the film as extras). Of the nearly 100,000 Veronica Mars fans whose passion for the show led them to slap their money on the barrelhead, it can truly be said that this is their movie – but is that a good thing? At what point do you cross over from crowd

funding to narrow casting? What’s to prevent a few well-heeled Scientologists from trying to bankroll a Battlefield Earth sequel? The truth is that most unsuccessful films and cancelled television shows sink all on their own, casualties of their own lack of merit or inability to appeal to a sufficiently large audience. Crowdfunding is, in a sense, both market and anti-market, allowing for the survival of otherwise “non-selected” projects through the direct support of a relatively small subset of the public. Still, anything that might help shake Hollywood out of the seemingly endless cycle of reboots, sequels, and adaptations can hardly be considered bad. If you’ve never seen “Veronica Mars” the TV show and you happen to catch a showing with a herd of Marshmallows, you will at some point feel like an eavesdropper on someone else’s inside joke; there will be callbacks that miss you and laughs you don’t share in. As individual as the experience of a movie is, moviegoing is ultimately communal; to be on the outside looking in is a particularly unsatisfying experience. If you have any desire to see Veronica Mars the movie, do the prep work and seek out a few episodes of the show. Otherwise, seek life elsewhere. – Michael Lee

works very well — is in its examination of specific individuals and the precise points at which their internal constructs fall to pieces. Maladies shines a light on two aspects of mental illness not typically acknowledged by cookie cutter Hollywood: that even the most naked lunacy only begins to break down at the interface between the delusional and “real” worlds, and that most of madness, like most of life, is about the mundane. It’s not, as A Beautiful Mind would have you believe, about shadowy government operatives and global nuclear conspiracies, but about how the hell to get your teeth brushed when the universe is speaking absolute truth directly to you at 10,000 terabytes per second. When James, after a random encounter with a blind woman, decides to finish his work in Braille, it seems the most natural and logical of decisions … until he must explain to Catherine that, because of their agreement to finish each other’s work should tragedy befall either of them, she must also learn Braille. It is at “Why Braille?” that the inability to effectively communicate what seems so perfectly reasonable within the confines of his head leads to the dis-ease, frustration, and disorganization that causes others to point at James

and say “He’s sick.” It’s an incredibly specific experience; that it comes across as well as it does is really a testament to the authenticity and restraint of Franco’s and Keener’s performances. The uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics says the more you know about one property of a particle, the less you can know about its complimentary attribute. Maybe a weird analog of Heisenberg will help you choose whether or not to invest any of your entertainment resources in Maladies; if you’re looking to learn something about the human condition, you are in for some serious navel gazing; if you want to experience the very specific conditions of some rather unusual humans, you may find some satisfaction, but eventually you’ll realize how pointless all this is. Have fun deciding. – Michael Lee

Starring Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Krysten Ritter, and Enrico Colantoni Directed by Rob Thomas Warner Brothers

It’s been nearly a decade since teen sleuth Veronica Mars (Bell) abandoned her hometown of Neptune, and her situation in New York resembles her old life on the Left Coast little. She’s traded the tempermental but magnetic Logan Echolls (Dohring) for the constancy and good-heartedness of “Piz” Piznarski (Chris Lowell); gotten a law degree; and is on the verge of landing a plum position with a prestigious firm. Her case-cracking days are behind her, and she is living the dream — until she hears that pop diva and Neptune High alum Bonnie DeVille has been murdered, and the primary suspect is none other than her old flame. After returning to Neptune to help Logan find a defense attorney, Veronica falls in with the old crowd on the eve of their 10-year high school reunion, and it isn’t long before she finds herself up to her old investigative tricks. If you’re an average movie going civilian, here’s what you need to know about Veronica Mars: It’s a reasonably slick, sassy, Millennial-noir based on a cancelled television series. It boasts a fine-looking cast and is not the most painful 107 minutes you will ever endure. If you self-identify as a “Marshmallow” — the equivalent for Mars devotees of “Cheesehead” for Packers fans — there is likely very little anyone can tell you about this movie, because in all probability, you were part of

Maladies

Starring James Franco and Catherine Keener Written and directed by Carter, James Franco Tribeca Film

James (Franco) is a former soap opera star turned writer whose acquaintance with reality is becoming increasingly intermittent. He lives with Catherine (Keener), a painter and occasional cross-dresser who cares for him and his off-balance sister Patricia (Fallon Goodson). Together with James’ “aunt” and neighbor Delmar (David Strathairn), they all struggle to live and create as their needs and idiosyncrasies entwine and become interdependent. On a macro level, Maladies is about the relationship between artistry and madness. As an overarching statement, it is self-conscious, selfabsorbed, masturbatory bullcrap. It’s what Todd Rundgren wryly referred to as “the ever popular tortured artist effect”: the asinine notion that hey, if you want to make real art, you’d damn well better be on the verge of hacking off a friggin’ ear. It dovetails quite well with that maddening modern ethos that only assigns value to the extravagant. It’s the type of film that says “devastated” when it means “disappointed.” It’s not so much that Maladies pointedly ignores the thousands upon thousands of writers, painters, musicians, and artistic types who are well adjusted and perfectly happy, it’s that it seems to ignore the possibility of them. As a grand meditation on creativity, it is utterly uninteresting and as irritating as hell. Where the film works — and, strangely enough,

LI’s Hottest Open Mics: Hone Your Skills Live There is no shortage of talent here on Long Island; new venues and bands seem to be cropping up everywhere these days. For those aspiring artists who are just starting out, wading through the crowded waters of the Long Island music scene can be both intimidating and confusing. Luckily, there are many great open mics where artists of all stripes can showcase their latest works and hone their craft. The most unique open mic on Long Island at the moment is Bring It To The Table, a collaboration between Grey Horse Tavern in Bayport and Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue. Hosted by Jack Licitra of Jack’s Waterfall, Bring It To The Table is an old fashioned song-swap in the style of Jack Hardy’s legendary workshops that launched the careers of Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. Without any stage banter or setup, songwriters bring in one brand new song to play. Afterwards, the crowd gives their feedback and advice on how to improve the song. In keeping with tradition, snapping – not applause – is the preferred method of showing Jack Licitra ones appreciation. “It’s a way to look at your craft with other writers and explore possibilities about songs you are working on,” Licitra explains. “Most importantly, it serves as a motivation tool to keep writers on a goal or pace with new material.” With plans for a documentary and a compilation album in the works, Bring It To The Table is an interesting opportunity for songwriters to showcase their latest tunes. The next session is planned for April 15 at Brickhouse Brewery. In addition to Bring It To The Table, both Brickhouse Brewery and Grey Horse Tavern host more traditional open mic events. For more information, visit brickhousebrewery.com or call 631-447-2337. Visit Grey Horse Tavern at greyhorsetavern.com or call 631472-1868. The Outrageous Open Mic at Stephen Talkhouse in Mick Amagansett is makHargreaves ing a big imprint on the East End music scene. Hosted by acclaimed producer and singer-songwriter Mick Hargreaves, the Outrageous Open Mic showcases a new featured artist every Thursday night in its “Closed Microphone” segment. “We keep things funny, and sometimes even hilarious, but there’s a set of rules to keep things from getting out of hand. it’s one song per performer, with second helpings after everyone has eaten once,” Hargreaves explains. “Our ‘forbidden list’ of worn-out songs is mercifully short: ‘Red House’, ‘Wagon Wheel’, ‘Mustang Sally’, and ‘Walkin’ on Sunshine’. But that list is always at risk of growing.” Upcoming “Closed Microphone” artists include Travis McKeveny and 40 Foot Saints. The

Stephen Talkhouse has a full backline, which means full bands are welcome in addition to solo performers. Learn more at stephentalkhouse.com or call 631-267-3117. A long standing open mic on the south shore takes place at Roast Coffee & Tea Trading Company in Patchogue every Friday night. The quaint and comfortable atmosphere of Roast is an ideal setting for an open mic, which welcomes performers of all ages. Area songwriter an performer Bryan Gallo Bryan hosts the proceedings. “We Gallo have all kinds of acts,” Gallo explains. “Singer/songwriters, instrumental music, spoken word/hip-hop, stand-up acts ... even magicians and mentalists. It’s cool because it keeps both the audience and the performers on their toes. I love the variety, and it’s rarely ever the same show two weeks in a row.” For more information, visit roastcoffeeandtea.com or call 631-312-5027. For the jazz/blues oriented performers, the best spot to showcase your licks and new songs is the blues jam at Green’s Irish Pub in Manhassett on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the

month. The jam is hosted by NOLA and the Sharpened Spurs, an allstar lineup consisting of Mark Mancini, Arthur Neilson, Mike Nugent, Felix Cabrera, and Ian Petillo. Their unique style of pick-up accompaniment can suit songwriters of many different styles. “We bring an eclectic blend of Soul, Blues, R&B and Country to the mix,” explains Mancini. “Singers and instrumentalists can attempt things that they just can’t do anywhere

else. This amazing group of musicians can back anyone up on any song and open it up.” Learn more at greensirishpub.com or call 516-570-6220. Although the Floral Park Open Mic at Charlie Bullfrogs is relatively new, it has attracted some interesting local talent. Each installment showcases a new featured artist and is a great venue for music, comedy and poetry alike. Past featured artists include Ricky Araya, who is currently gigging in support of his new album Leaves. Franklin Square singer-songwriter Luis Moreno is featured on April 11. For more information, visit facebook.com/charliebullfrogs or call 516352-2384. K.J. Farrell’s in Bellmore is not only a great place to see some of the most renowned area bands and national touring artists, it’s also a place to take part in one of the most varied and musical jams in the region: Kenny Forgione’s weekly Monday events. Forgione, a founding member of Wonderous Stories, leads these weekly events that are very much worth checking out whether you are a musician or a music lover. Farrell’s also hosts Frank Walker’s open mic on the first Tuesday of every month. Learn more at kjfarrells.com or call 516-804-9925. Whether you are an aspiring songwriter, poet or comedian, open mics are a great way to showcase your talent and hone your craft. An open mic also serves as a great place to network, so if you’re looking to catch some fresh new talent this spring, these events serve as a fantastic night out. – Peter Mancini

HEADLINERS

Taking Back Sunday Best Buy Theater, New York City April 15, 16, and 21 at 7 PM bestbuytheater.com axs.com

What more needs to be said? Long Island’s biggest rock group of the last decade appears in New York City once again, this time co-headlining with The Used on top of a stacked bill that also includes a couple of hot bands in Tonight Alive and Sleepwave – and TBS is doing it all as part of a three-concert run at Best Buy Theater.

Summer Of Love Concert April 22 8 PM Patchogue Theater (631) 207-1313 patchoguetheatre.com

Glen Burtnick (Styx, ELO) leads his “Summer Of Love Experience” in this massive concert event that features the music of virtually ever band that was big in the 1960s.

Kevin Costner & Modern West The Paramount, Huntington April 13 at 8 pm ticketmaster.com paramountny.com

Modern West began when Kevin Costner’s wife, Christine, encouraged him to reconnect with his love of music – but the history of the band goes back more than 20 years, when Kevin Costner met musician John Coinman in an Los Angeles acting workshop. The band draws its influences from a broad tapestry of American music and beyond. Lily Costner will open.

Defending The Caveman April 12 at 5 PM • NYCB Theatre at Westbury (800) 745-3000 ticketmaster.com thetheatreatwestbury.com

Vince Valentine is the star of the current touring version of the longest-running one-man show in Broadway history, which is still doing boffo box office years after it left the Great White Way.

Madeleine Peyroux April 11 at 8 PM The Space at Westbury (800) 745-3000 ticketmaster.com thespaceatwestbury.com

“The only thing that matters is the song,” said Peyroux in her bio, and it’s that charm that has made her an international sensation. This jazz singer and guitarist only tours sporadically, so this is an opportunity for fans to see the genre star up-close and person in the intimate environs of The Space.

MEDIA

With Bob Smith

It will be interesting to eventually figure out whether World Wrestling Entertainment made a good move in bringing longtime star Hulk Hogan back into its fold. Hogan, now 60, has been used primarily as a de facto goodwill ambassador thus far … WWE's new cable TV home should be announced in late April or early May, according to the company … The March 2014 Playboy Playmate of the Month, Britt Linn, made headlines for a rather surprising reason: She's the first Playmate in more than 15 years to sport short hair; her style is a straight-up mohawk. On the subject of pro wrestling, the issue also features an in-depth profile of former WWE champion The Iron Sheik, now one of the wildest personalities in underthe-radar show biz and on Twitter. The Sheik has become something of a national celebrity for having no “off” button, as he'll go off on foul-mouthed rants in broken English that are both disturbing and hilarious

… Print isn't dead: The new baseball season has brought us the annual edition of Who's Who In Baseball, a straight-stats publication that has changed little in the 99 years (!) it's been in business; it's available at most larger newsstands … It's official: This season of “Saturday Night Live” will be remembered as one of the soggiest ever, full of selfcongratulatory send-offs (Seth Meyers) and a cast that's only slightly lesser than the population of Rhode Island. The highlights: the emergence of versatile Kate McKinnon (a Seacliff native) and exactly one new cast member out of a ridiculous number of eight (Mike O'Brien) to show even the slightest bit of promise. Our original pick as a top new cast member, Beck Bennett, hasn't been given a whole lot to do … That didn't last long: former ShopHQ wristwatch personality Avi Viera is

gone from JTV after serving a short time as as a jewelry host there … We can't imagine listening to talk station WOR 710 AM unless you're either 105 years old or from South but when we listened Huullkk Carolina, H to a recent New York Mets Hooggaann spring training game on the H station, we were astounded at how bad it sounds sonically, even in Queens and Manhattan. Losing WFAN to the New York Yankees is a crushing blow for the Mets no matter how the team's officials might try to spin it … Very quietly, CBS renewed the bulk of its prime time lineup for fall 2014. That was good news for fans of several series that seemed to be teetering on the brink, including “Mike & Molly,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Two Broke Girls,” and a couple of other shows. One of the few canceled series was the Robin Williams/Sarah Michelle Gellar comedy “The Crazy Ones.” So much for star power.

Jazz & Blues Jim Hall

T

Jim Hall: Guitar Legend Honored At Blue Note

he Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City – quite possibly the leading jazz venue in the United States – will present “Playing For Jim Hall,” the official memorial tribute celebrating the life and music of legendary guitarist/NEA Jazz Master Jim Hall, on Friday, April 18 through Sunday, April 20, with shows at 8 pm and 10:30 pm nightly. The tribute was programmed in conjunction with the Hall family (Jane, Hall’s wife, and Devra, Hall’s daughter and manager) and friends. The engagement will feature bassist Scott Colley and drummer Joey Baron (members of Hall’s last trio) throughout the entire engagement, with various guests. Guitarists Bill Frisell and Julian Lage, both of whom were directly influenced by and collaborated with Jim Hall, will appear on April 18 and 19. Other guests include saxophonist Greg Osby and guitarist/vocalist Kate Schutt on April 18; saxophonist Chris Potter, keyboardist Larry Goldings, guitarist Brian Camelio, drummers Bill Stewart and Lewis Nash, and bassist Steve Laspina on April 19;

and guitarists Russell Malone, Adam Rogers, John Pondel, and Satoshi Inoue with pianists Bill Charlap and Gil Goldstein on April 20, among other surprise guests. On April 17 through 22, 2012, exactly two years prior to this memorial program, Jim Hall completed what would ultimately become his last Blue Note engagement (joined by Colley & Baron, and Lage as a special guest). As arrangements were being finalized for Hall’s return to Blue Note during the April 18 to 20 time frame, news of his December 10, 2013 death broke. With the dates on hold and his band already in place, the engagement naturally evolved into a memorial program to celebrate Hall’s life and music. “Everyone I know, and thousands I have never met, from all over the world, loved Jim. But I was lucky to share life with him for 50 years,” says Jane Hall, Jim’s wife. “I got to see his gentle way, his kindness and generosity, and sense of humor up close and personal. His legacy is his music which came from the biggest heart ever. Joey, Scott, Bill, and Julian along with every musician invited to play this weekend held a special place in his heart and I think his influence on all musicians who knew him or heard him will be everlasting. Special thanks to Satoshi Inoe who flew here from Tokyo, and to Brian Camelio who recorded and traveled with him these past few years, to Steve LaSpina, one of his two favorite bass players, and to all of you helping celebrate Jim’s life.” The music charge for this special event is $20 for the bar, or $35 for table seats. It was 1983, the darkest of times for vinyl collectors. Disco and new wave dance had replaced progressive rock and album oriented radio stations. Record collectors were hunted down like animals; those caught were deported to dark and dank discos in Bay Ridge, where they were forced to work at no pay until 3 or 4 am, rethreading cassettes, a new craze. Cassettes took off with the emergence of the Sony Walkman in 1979, and they were quickly replacing LPs, which couldn't be played in cars or at the beach. At the head of the Vinyl forces was a slight man, known simply throughout the music world as "The Scrooge." Scrooge had record stores in Little Neck, Flushing and Hempstead. He was part of the cult of the Titus, who had enlightened thousands at his warehouse in Brooklyn. Scrooge was depressed…not only was disco taking over music but sales of his beloved records were down, and thieves from his own store had undermined his collection. Scrooge crossed the street, heading for a quick fix at the McDonalds, his mind filled with Japanese green vinyl pressings, a collection of mint punk vinyl he had just purchased, and the impending visit of "Fred The Boot." He never saw the Mack truck that hurtled towards him, only a few feet away. Scrooge was about to meet the Master Presser in the sky… TO BE CONTINUED

Demolition

Dave Clive’s Nawlins Funk Band Three Brothers Independent

Who: One of the area’s longest-lasting live music acts continues on with this new effort, which marks the final recorded work of keyboardist Frank Antico, who died as this recording was being made. The album serves as not only excellent new music from the band, but as a fitting tribute to Antico as well. Performing on the album are Antico, drummer Clive, guitarist John Putnam, saxophonist Tim Veeder, bassist Peter Zagare, keyboardist Greg Berger, and singers Lindsay Pinzino and Nelson

Montana. The album was produced by Clive, who has performed with a huge array of acts during his varied career. The Artists & Their Sound: Expect the usual meaty stew of authentic New Orleansstyle R&B in this lengthy disc of tasty covers and new original songs. The Songs: “Carnivale In Coney Island,” “Nawlins Grease,” “Right Place, Wrong Time,” “Boardwalk Boogie,” “Black Cat Bone,” “Sandy (You Can’t Break Me),” “Hey Pocky Way,” “Sweet Potato Pie,” “D.C. Hits The Whiskey,” “If You Love Me Baby,” “Walking The Dog,” “Vega Monster,” “Mardi Gras In New Orleans,” “Frankie’s Grease,” “Let The Good Times Roll.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to davidclivemusic.com or nawlinsfunkband.com for schedules and booking information. This album is available via CDBaby.com. Gathering Time When One Door Closes ... Independent

Who: Gathering Time ranks as one of the busiest area folk/pop acts of the past decade, but now there’s a difference as a new member in guitarist, bassist, and singer Gerry McKeveny has joined the trio; the act is rounded out by Stuart Markus and Hillary Foxsong. According to a press release, this album was the third-most played album on folk radio in January (according to FOLKDJ-Listerv).

The disc was recorded at Wrong Side Of The Tracks Studios in Oyster Bay. The Artists & TheirSound: The trio picks up right where it left off, offering soaring harmonies and lilting melodies as the new-age children of Crosby Stills & Nash, The Bryds, and other

folk/rock pioneers. The Songs: “Rain And Snow,” “Sincerely Yours,” “Moonlight Row,” “Leave The Dreaming,” “It’s Just So,” “The Fox,” “The Path That’s Right For You,” “If It Would Only Rain,” “There But For Fortune,” “Good Day To Be Above Ground,” “Mingulay Boat Song,” “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to gathering-time.com. Rod Picott: Nashville Style At University Cafe

Rod Picott, a hot Nashville-based singer-songwriter, will headline on April 13 at 2 pm at The University Cafe at Stony Brook University. His second time at this pouplar venue, Picott incorporates elements of Americana, alt-country, and folk into his music; he’s released a new album, Hang Your Hopes Upon A Crooked Nail, which is now rising on the charts. Here’s a huge bonus: Area country favorite Mary Lamont will open the concert. Tickets are now avaialable; $20 advance sale at universitycafe.org through Friday, April 11, or $25 at the door (cash only). Information: universitycafe.org.

According to writer, director, producer, and casting director Debra Markowitz, the filming of a Long Island-based short film, The Last Taxi Driver, proved troublesome. The zombie-themed thriller’s production team had to juggle timing as members of the production crew and zombie actors were teachers or students, and the only week they were available would be the mid-winter break in dreary February. The star of The Last Taxi Driver, Robert Clohessy, had to work within his “Blue Bloods” schedule; Emily Jackson, who plays Violet, had to fly in from California. “Basically, what we had was a five-day span in which we could film The Last Taxi Driver or we would lose some of our crew and potentially all principal actors. We knew the timing would not be ideal weather-wise, but we wanted to get it done,” said Markowitz. “I’m a big believer in the fact that if something changes, it will generally be for the best, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time.” Ice, wind, and snow proved daunting; illness and unusable locations proved challenging – but filming commenced, and The Last Taxi Driver is being editing by Valley Stream’s Robert La Rosa; next, festivals. For more information, find the film at Facebook.

Old Man, Look At My Player: Young Leads PonoMusic

Veteran rocker Neil Young used his keynote speech at The South By Southwest Festival to talk about his new music player and service, PonoMusic, as fans have contributed more than $2 million to the project. It’s designed to deliver – brace for it – actual high fidelity sound. Young and PonoMusic CEO John Hamm met with reporters to explain why quality sound isn’t around these days, and how they are striving to bring it back. “Whatever you believe about where things come from, the human body is unbelievable,” said Young when discussing good sound versus compressed MP3 music. “It’s so sensitive. And when you give it something, it loves it. You give it good food, it grows. It’s nourished. And when you give it good input, it loves it. When it sees great art, it feels good.” “Our goal was to offer the highest quality digital music available from all the major labels with the world’s greatest sounding, user-friendly portable music player,“ said PonoMusic CEO John Hamm.

National News & Notes

Country music star Sara Evans seems to have come out of nowhere after a lenghthy hiatus with Slow Me Down, her new album that’s burning up the C&W charts. Long past her well-publicized personal life woes that threw a monkey wrench into her career, Evans returns looking and sounding perhaps better than ever. “I’m just really grateful for what I have,” said Evans of her current life. “I want my life to mean someSara thing and I want to make music Evans that matters.” ... Alt-rock legends Deftones have announcedthey will hit the road this May for a string of shows that kicks off with the Rocklahoma Festival in Oklahoma on May 23. Most recently, Deftones joined Avenged Sevenfold for their headlining U.S. tour last October. The Deftones band is touring in support of its seventh studio album, Koi No Yokan, which was released in November 2012, debuting at #11 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, with over 65,000 sold its first week, spawningtwo Top Five hits at Rock radio (“Tempest” and “Swerve”) ... Steve Smith and Paul Harris, who created the legendary electronic music act Dirty Vegas more than 10 years ago, are ready for the next step in the band’s evolution. Dirty Vegas Smith and Harris spent 2013 working on new material – not to chase the trend of EDM, but because electronic music is in their blood. The result is their sixth official release, the Let The Night EP which was released a few back back. The new effort consistes of just four tracks and takes a break from the “bangers,” yet remains highly danceable and accessible.

Veruca Salt – featuring its original members Nina Gordon (guitar/vocals), Louise Post (guitar/vocals), Steve Lack (bass), and Jim Shapiro (drums) – will release its first new, original material in 14 years on April 19. The 10-inch released by the band’s first label, Minty Fresh Records, solely for Record Store Day, features their zeitgeist-defining single “Seether” on one side and two new songs – “The Museum of Broken Relationships” and “It’s Holy” – on the other one. The new songs are produced by Veruca Salt and Brad Wood, who also produced their seminal debut album, American Thighs, which was released in 1994. Veruca Salt ranks as one of the most popular bands of the 1990s, buoyed by their hit video for “Volcano Girls.”

Lily Allen: Third Time The Charm

British pop superstar Lily Allen will release her third album, Sheezus, on May 6 via Warner Bros. Records. The new disc mark’s Allen’s first album since 2009’s It’s Not Me, It’s You. The album finds her re-teaming with her longtime collaborator Greg Kurstin (Tegan & Sara, P!nk), except for the title track, which was produced by DJ Dahi, and “Air Balloon,” which was produced by Shellback. At the end of 2013, Allen released two songs simultaneously: Her international smash cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” which soared to the #1 chart spot in the U.K. and the download-only track “Hard Out Here,” which charted in the British Top 10 that same week.

Frankly, we just wanted another glimpse at Ms. Dulfer, one of the finest contemporary saxophone players in the world, who has backed Prince on countless tours and albums. Since then, the Dutch blonde beauty has forged a solid career in smooth jazz and funk, and her live shows are as exciting as her endless string of charttopping string of jazz albums. If you’re on the fence, don’t be – Dulfer offers top-flight original music featuring a band of great musicians in a bold, new way that’s both accessible and a lot of fun at the same time.

A battle rages over original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss not getting to play with Gene and Paul Stanley at the ceremony, as these four were the original members of the band before all the replacements started showing up. Simmons apparently strongly feels that the inclusion of Ace and Peter in the performance isn’t all that important, and his ego steers his decision making. In full disclosure, I love Gene Simmons; I appear in the new Kiss biography Nothin’ To Lose by Ken Sharp, and I’ve had my share of Kiss encounters through the decades. Despite all of that, the stance that Simmons takes winds up hurting the fans. I remember clearly that Simmons, when he was dating Diana Ross, advised her during the ill-fated year 2000 Supremes “reunion” (“Who cares about Mary Wilson,” Simmons reportedly said to Ross, which turned out to be very bad advice for those who remember that debacle). It is true that all the controversy finally got Kiss onto the cover of Rolling Stone after decades of Julianne Hough being ignored. When they tour In Rock Of Ages again, Simmons and Stanley will draw bigger crowds than ever. They deserve their place in the that he was 10 years older than his Hall Of Fame – but then, I’m still chart rivals of that era, Paul waiting for The New York Dolls, McCartney and Diana Ross. I’m glad T.Rex, and The Marvelettes to get that all of them are still active and their proper placement someday. touring successfully at this very Voice Of Success: “The Voice” on moment. Recently, the films Rock Of Ages and CBGB got a fair amount of attention, and the floodgates are now about to open. Most anticipated is the film version of the Broadway hit Jersey Boys, which covers the career of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, one of my fave rave groups during my teen years in the 1960s. Obviously, Clint Eastwood was also a fan, as he is directing this epic. Four Seasons leader Valli was recently interviewed on Scott Shannon’s morning show on CBS-FM, and it was shocking to learn that Valli was 80 years old – meaning

close to you without saying goodbye,” said Kakaty of the theme of both the single and video. The band launched a social media initiative using Instagram surrounding the song, which deals with the loss of Kakaty’s father. Fans are encouraged to upload their own photos depicting what the song means to them. Fans have been tagging Instagram photos with #petorntopieces since its launch, and the collection is growing. The band is overwhelmed with its success and encourage fans to visit their official site and keep it up. It’s all working: “Torn To Pieces” has gone from being #1 most added to #13 on the Active Rock chart in its first five weeks. The band already has scored two #1 singles from their latest LP, most recently with “Deal With The Devil”; the first was “Trenches.” With that third single about to go Top 10 at commercial radio, Pop Evil will once again hit the road, this time in a joint tour with Escape The Face; support will come from eOne labelmates Avatar and Glamour Of The Kill. In addition, Pop Evil, joined by the legendary Queens rapper DMC of RUN-DMC, will open each ACC Network telecast of the 2014 ACC men’s basketball tournament. Darryl McDaniels, better known as DMC, the legendary hip hop icon, remixed “Trenches” for use in the tournament.
