Sbarro: A Superior Slice As Tasty As It Is Quick

We were as shocked at this bit of news as any restaurant info we've received recently: In early March, headlines were abuzz that Melville's Sbarro pizza restaurant chain was planning on filing for bankruptcy – for the second time in recent years – and that news came about a month after the chain had announced it was going to close 155 of its 400 locations. The news about failing chain

restaurants shouldn't come as much of a surprise. As we've detailed in the last few issues, companies such as Panera Bread and Chipotle Mexican Grill are proving that fast food doesn't have to be horrible slop served by uncaring minimum-wage

drones; a quickie lunch doesn't need to be bad food. What's confusing about Sbarro's recent news is that as far as pizza goes, it pulverizes Pizza Hut, punches out Papa John's, and utterly destroys Domino's – it's always been a quality slice. What is hurting Sbarro is apparently what's troubling the New York Mets' relief pitchers: Location, location, location. It seems that in this hurried-up world, the traditional shopping mall is no longer a “hip” (or in many cases, all that affordable) place to shop (the outstanding Huffington Post

However, malls are exactly where many Sbarro outlets have been strategically placed; they can also be found at New York Thruway rest stops and such, as well as some stand-alone outlets. Frankly, we're saddened that Sbarro is having such difficulty, because we can report this without question: It ain't the food that's the problem. We've always considered Sbarro an oasis in malls and even on the streets of Manhattan; rather than

gulp down some Asian fare, overpriced burgers, or the suddenly common “99-cent slice” that’s usually lame, a regular or “stuffed slice” at Sbarro actually tastes like real New York pizza, and that's something that could never be said of Pizza Hut and its many lame imitators. Salads at Sbarro are usually fresh; service is usually quick; prices are moderate. Perhaps it is, indeed, the mall that's the problem, because Sbarro seems to be getting stained with the label of “fast food chain,” but it's always been about five steps above McDonald's and its ilk in terms of quality. Perhaps things are about to change for this area favorite; according to reports, it's going to get a new name (Sbarro Brooklyn Fresh), and probably a new coat of paint and new menu options as well. But Sbarro is clearly not alone; at the time we are writing this column, it was announced that Quiznos, the longtime purveyor of lousy submarine sandwiches (the come-on was that the bread was toasted), was filing for bankruptcy as well. Let's face it: Americans are tired of crappy fast food at any price. We're stunned anyone put Sbarro in that category.

album of her 25-year recording career. “It’s kind of the main drag, starting in the old downtown,” she said of her old stomping grounds. “I remember the first McDonald’s in town there. The town’s pretty small. That’s where we would hang out, the Burger King parking lot, the football games. Everything was on Fourth Street. That’s where we would cruise. And then it turns into Highway 7 that goes out of town to Kansas City.” That’s exactly where the album opens, with the bluesy, harmonica-spiced “Kansas City.” The scene is set with Etheridge driving in “my old man’s Delta 88,” reliving road-trips fueled on “Lucky Charms, Tic Tacs and Mom’s amphetamines.” Only this time, the woman who left Leavenworth for Hollywood years ago is taking herself home. It’s a trip to where she’s from, but also a trip to where she’s headed. There are “all the untold lies of my misspent youth,” as she sings in the funky coming-of-age tale “The Shadow Of The Black Crow,” a song in the storytelling tradition of such artists as The Eagles and Bob Seger. There is the demand to “Be Real” (“You can’t manufacture me, because I like it naturally”), a song in which she says she nods lovingly to the sultry, sexy soul of Rufus with Chaka Khan and Sly & The Family Stone. And she voyages into new territories of folky rock with the first single, “Falling Up,” a joyful, upbeat track featuring her spirited recording debut on the banjitar, a hybrid banjo-guitar. The fuel for this trek is her inner strength and confidence. In part it comes from recognition — 2012 has seen her awarded with a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame, and tapped to be honored by the National Women’s Museum of Art in Washington, DC in the fall. But more so, if it comes from within.

olin Jost, who has succeeded Daniel Seth Meyers at the “Saturday Murphy Night Live" mock news desk, quipped: “Monday was opening day for baseball, and a reopening of old wounds for Mets fans.” As angry as New York Mets fans might have been watching their heroes fail to hold a one-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning, their spirits had to have been darkended even more the next day when Bobby Parnell was placed on the disabled list with a ligament tear in his pitching elbow. By the time the first homestand finished, it was announced that Parnell would undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2014 season. The loss of Parnell makes the Mets' failure to re-sign LaTroy Hawkins, who steadied the bullpen in Parnell’s absence last year and was a rare leader in the clubhouse, all that more egregious. Hawkins signed a $2.5 million contract with the Colorado Rockies as a free agent during the off-season, chump change in terms of payroll for major league teams. Every Mets player I have spoken with has told me that Hawkins is missed. They also agreed that it reflects the penny-wise, pound-foolish philosophy that has become synonymous with the Mets corporate culture in recent years.

New York Post columnist Ken Davidoff wrote an insightful article two weeks ago about how the cost of going to a Mets game – factoring in average ticket prices, parking fees, and concessions – is in the highest third of major league teams, yet the team's payroll is in the lowest third. Unless a team is defying the odds and winning, it all adds up as a certain recipe for poor attendance. Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy made national news when he missed the first two games of the season to be with his wife when his son, Noah, was born. Paternity leave is part of the collective bargaining agreement between Major League Baseball and its players association, and other big leaguers have utilized the provision. The only reason Murphy’s absence raised eyebrows was because WFAN radio personalities Craig Carton, Boomer Esiason, and Mike Francesa criticized Murphy for taking time off. Esiason took it one step further by saying on the air that Murphy’s wife should have had a Caesarian so that their son would have been born before opening day. It's easy to wonder if any of the FAN talkies really believed what they said, or if they were playing shock jock

The Wood Memorial is the first major stakes race of the New York State horse racing season, and for years it was considered a preview of the Kentucky Derby. It has been a long time since a Wood Memorial winner had a major presence at the Derby, and this year will probably be no different after a 9-1 longshot, Wicked Strong, easily beat the highly regarded favorite, Social Inclusion. Cable television’s Animal Planet announced a new fall show, “The Yao Ming Project,” at its recent upfront. The former Houston Rockets center is an animal rights activist, and is starring in a program that aims to prevent the slaughter of rhinos and elephants for their tusks. Called Out But Safe: A Baseball Umpire's Journey (University of Nebraska Press) is the autobiography of one of the most colorful umpires in baseball history, Al Clark. With the help of co-author Dan Schlossberg, Clark gives a noholds-barred look at what it’s like to be an on-field arbiter. Clark also writes candidly about how he got fired for cashing in on unused work-related airline tickets, and how he spent time in prison for taking part in memorabilia fraud. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America (Evans) looks pretty buff considering he’s recently had a 70-year stint encased in ice – but wouldn’t you be want a second chance if you could be paired with the beauteous Black Widow (Johansson, reprising her role from Marvel’s The Avengers)? Cap is back, and this sequel to the first Captain America film once again features a whole mess of comic book-style dialogue, thrilling action sequences, and scintillating chemistry between the leads. We’ll state it again: The best films being churned out by Hollywood these days are either animated movies or popcorn flicks based on comic book superheroes. Yes, in trying times, pure escapism is the order of the day. It’s probably the same reason The Three Stooges became stars by lampooning Adolf Hitler in several of their classic shorts. Your story, such as it is: Cap, Steve Rogers, has just returned to Washington D.C. following his latest battles with his new teammates, The Avengers (the Marvel films have such airtight continuity that the WWE desperately need to hire their writers), and he’s struggling to adjust to a world that’s only seven decades removed from

We tried to write the above descriptor and tried desperately not to make it sound like it was written by the Karo Syrup company, but then we figured, “heck, who cares?” We once noted that the first Thor film was the best Marvel film to date, but the first Captain America film topped it; then, the initial Avengers offering was even better than that. Guess what? Captain America: The Winter Soldier manages to be action packed, lighthearted, and gripping all at the same time, and might just be the best Marvel adventure yet. It seems slightly overlong at two hours and 16 minutes, but you’ll leave the theater thorougly entertained – but expect to ask little Becky “what happened to our garbage can lids?” as the offspring soon start using them as faux Captain America shields. Missing Persons: Found

One of the biggest groups of the 1980s was Missing Persons, fronted by the glamorous model and singer Dale Bozzio – the wife of former Frank Zappa drummer Terry Bozzio. The band of top-flight musicians and its sexy frontwoman scored such massive “skinny tie” hits as “Walking in LA,” “Destination Unknown,” and “Mental Hopscotch.” Now the group is back – Dale Bozzio looks as if she hasn’t aged a day – and will be teaming with fellow veteran 80s acts Bow Wow Wow (“I Want Candy”) and Gene Loves Jezebel for a national tour. At press time, the trio of acts was booked for May 17 at The Wellmont Theater in Montclair, New Jersey.

Christine Is Back: Big Mac Again

For the first time in almost a decade, Christine McVie has returned to Fleetwod Mac, making the lineup that most classic rock fans remember – Christine McVie, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham – intact once again. The reunited band will tour for much of this year, and a new album is in the works as well. The upcoming area date for the legendary rock band will be October 6 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Make plans quickly; the announcement that Christine McVie had returned has made it a hot ticket.

Non-Stop

Starring Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Nate Parker, Michelle Dockery, Anson Mount, Scott McNairy, Corey Stoll Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra Universal

While it kind of bothers us that an all-world actor, Liam Neeson, is now pretty much resigned to life as an “action star” (the man should star in serious films, given his rich talent), at least he chooses his action films wisely. For an all-thrills, no-brainer evening at the mallplex, one could do a lot worse than Non-Stop, a surprisingly grippingyet-goofy meller that’s much more original than most action films are required to be. It’s not great art, but it isn’t bad entertainment. Federal air marshal William Marks (Neeson) is getting text messages during a, yes, non-stop flight; someone is claiming that passengers on the flight will be killed every 20 minutes unless a whopping $150 million is wired into an electronic bank account. Sure enough, people start getting offed really fast, and it all leads to the big question in a a high-flying game of Clue, and the characters are every bit as clichéd: Who is behind all this? Is it the pilot of the troubled airplane (Jason Butler Harner)? The jittery MILF passenger (Moore)? The wonderful stewardess (Dockery)? The businessman (McNairy)? Aspirin? Sucrets? Good heavens – everyone on board seems to be a suspect! Sure, this is silly stuff – there’s a body in a restroom that nobody seems to notice for hours, when

every flight we’ve ever been on features kids and seniors standing in a desperate pee line for most of the time the flight is in the air – but Neeson is reunited here with director Collet-Serra, who he worked with previously on another hit, Unknown. There’s a clever twist in the plot here that we won’t detail, but it’s that very surprise that makes the movie’s pace seem breathtaking even as the action film corn stalks bloom. A nice idea here is how the text messages that keep being sent to the air marshall appear on screen as he gets them; the tension builds as the messages keep appearing one-by-one.

Great art? Not on your life. But the saving grace of Non-Stop is the juicy plot twist, combined with a cast (Neeson and Moore in particular) who work hard in trying to make a film that’s only slightly more serious than Snakes On A Plane seem worthy. They succeeded; Non-Stop is miles better than the other February film dumps (3 Days To Kill, The Monuments Men) that were released with twice the fanfare but aren’t even half as good. Sure, this isn’t Oscar bait, but it’s fun to bat yourself on the left side of the head and ask “whodunit?” every now and again. – Cody Bell

Chris, however, is too ingrained in his old ways; pushing a broom will never do. He reunites with some old, sleazy compadres, and Chris and Frank have the sort of final breakup that changes lives forever – and leads to some nasty goings-on that, as they say, just can’t end well. The big reason to see Blood Ties is the riveting Owen; he’s all menace under his seething, bitter skin, and from the onset it becomes apparent that he’s a time bomb waiting to go off. It’s one of the

great performances of this year, but because of this film’s age and it’s lack of wide distribution, it’s likely that this is a great film and performance that may go under-publicized. But don’t let the lack of TV ads and hype dissuade you: Blood Ties is a showcase for Owen and likely to wind up on many Top 10 lists come December. (Note: At press time, Blood Ties was being offered on-demand on many area cable systems at the same time is it running in theaters.) – Cody Bell

Starring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana, Mathias Schoenaerts, James Caan Directed and written by Guillaume Canet Roadside Attractions This picture, floating around since last year when it was somewhat of a surprise hit at Cannes, finally is on screens at about the time you read this – and it’s about time. Clive Owen is swiftly becoming one of our best actors, and his performance here is a tour de force. One of the most enjoyable things about this Scorsese-like crime drama (director and writer Canet has learned his lessons well) is that it is set in the 1970s, and the job done here making things look as if they were from more than 40 years ago is first-rate and authentic. To be blunt, Blood Ties depicts New York City at its grungy worst/best during the era when peep shows and hustlers roamed 42nd Street and crime always seemed to be at an all-time high. It’s a remarkable job of time travel, but it’s just the cherry on a wondrously realistic and taut period piece. In 1974, an aging thug named Chris (Owen) has been released from prison after serving time for a gang-style hit. He reunites with his younger brothers, Frank (Crudup), now is a police officer with a promising career. Frank does his best to acclimate Chris back into society by opening his home to Chris and helping him find a job, but it’s a low-rent one as a janitor at an auto dealership.

Jazz & Blues Walter Trout: A Noble Fight

During 2013, famed blues guitarist Walter Trout was struck with a life-threatening liver disease, and as a result lost 100 pounds. It’s a unique tale that continues to go on at press time, as Trout is the subject of a new album, biography, and documentary of his life. “For five years, Walter, Provogue Records, and I have worked towards making Walter’s 25th year as a solo artist a special celebratory event,” said Marie Trout, Walter’s wife. “But the festivities will have to wait. Walter is urgently in need of a liver transplant. It has been heartbreaking for me to watch Walter struggle through these past many months, as we tried various treatment options provided by Walter’s doctors and liver specialists. One by one, the treatments failed. Yet through it all, Walter’s courage and determination continually amazed me ... Trout reflects on his time in the 1980s when seemingly nobody seemed to want to hear the blues, through being “discovered” and having long-time gigs as a hardplaying and hard-drinking and drugging globetrotting sideman with Canned Heat and John Mayall. The book chronicles how Trout eventually became drug free, broke out on his own, and embarked on a solo career in 1989. Currently in production and scheduled to be shown this summer, a documentary features Trout talking in depth about his life and music. One of this year’s most heralded Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Ace Frehley, will release Space Invader – his first new solo album in five years – via Entertainment One Music (a division of Long Island’s eOne Music) on June 24. The album will include at least nine new original songs, as well as a cover of Steve Miller’s classic “The Joker.” This album markss the first release under Frehley’s new universal deal on eOne Music. “Life on earth has been very good to me, and the body of work I’ve created over the years has withstood the test of time,” said Frehley. “Today I see no obstacles before me, and my creativity has never been more fine tuned. Growing up in an alien world has enhanced my senses and allowed me to succeed where others would have failed. The best is yet to come!” Frehley will participate in the 2014 Revolver Golden Gods show by presenting The Dimebag Darrell “Best Guitarist” Award alongside labelmate Zakk Wylde. RHYTHM TRACKING Top 40 RIP? Or, perhaps this column could be entitled “Why Radio Charts And All That Goes With Them Mean Nothing Anymore.” The music industry is trying to keep a lid on all the internal drama caused by streaming, but the new numbers are in, and they aren’t good. Sales are down – not just sales of CDs, but sales of download singles and albums have also dropped like a ton of

bricks, while Spotify and Pandora, to name only two online streaming music services, continue to grow. The recent debut of iTunes Radio pretty much flopped, and things in general are not pretty in the money-making part of the puzzle. Does this mean that people aren’t listening to music? Quite the contrary; they’re listening more than ever; they’re just not buying anything as music becomes a casual part of their media diet, not the passionate experience that it once was for decades of music fans. Music is now, for all intents and purposes, wallpaper, no longer the main event. Make no mistake, radio is doing its best to convince us otherwise, but it is not what it once was, and probably will never be again. As a pointed sign of the times, the one retail music icon left in New York City, J&R Music World, has announced its farewell, causing longtime music fans on the east coast to mourn in unison. I have touched on this subject in this column of mine here in Good Times for years, and the birds have come home to roost. the 90s it glammed up “reality” over music and helped kids find out how to steal music via the original Napster and other such services. Karaoke also opened the downfall door as everyone got on stage and became a “star” until “star” came to mean nothing. Television shows such as “American Idol” helped speed up that part of the cycle as well. Then there’s radio: Huge companies control stations throughout America, and they all play the same songs so that Miami sounds like Manhattan which sounds like Omaha which sounds like Seattle. There are no more local area hits, “regional hits” as they were called; they claim they’re based on sales at iTunes and YouTube views. You can believe that if you like. No left field, different, off the wall-type things get a chance to break through. Everything sounds the same and becomes a big pot of mush … and there are not too many people out there that want to buy mush. Album sales have been replaced by single download tracks, and without an entire album by one artist to hook you in, no one becomes a fan the way that they once did in the old days. Who: Long Island native and singer/artist Ann-dee recently released a new album, “The Fabrique,” a combination of electronica, alternative rock, and pop music. Ann-dee first received national notice for her role in the video “It’s Only Halloween,” which was posted on YouTube and released on home video in 2011; the clip and song featured the star of “The Munsters,” Butch Patrick, who appeared as Eddie on the classic sitcom. It was 1983, the darkest of times for vinyl collectors. Disco and new wave dance had replaced progressive rock and album oriented radio stations. Record collectors were hunted down like animals; those caught were deported to dark and dank discos in Bay Ridge, where they were forced to work at no pay until 3 or 4 am, rethreading cassettes, a new craze. Cassettes took off with the emergence of the Sony Walkman in 1979, and they were quickly replacing LPs, which couldn't be played in cars or at the beach. At the head of the Vinyl forces was a slight man, known simply throughout the music world as "The Scrooge." Scrooge had record stores in Little Neck, Flushing and Hempstead. He was part of the cult of the Titus, who had enlightened thousands at his warehouse in Brooklyn. Scrooge was depressed…not only was disco taking over music but sales of his beloved records were down, and thieves from his own store had undermined his collection. Scrooge crossed the street, heading for a quick fix at the McDonalds, his mind filled with Japanese green vinyl pressings, a collection of mint punk vinyl he had just purchased, and the impending visit of "Fred The Boot." He never saw the Mack truck that hurtled towards him, only a few feet away. Scrooge was about to meet the Master Presser in the sky… TO BE CONTINUED
