Bountiful Gourmet
A Guide To Hamburgers There probably isn’t any food I enjoy more in the world than burgers, maybe with Texas Brisket giving it a run for the money. In 1970, Ueli Praegar, the head of the then new Burger King franchise on Long Island suggested I should be the patron saint of the burger industry. I have not taken his words lightly. In 1971, Marty Gottlieb wrote in the Daily News, “Rich Branciforte, whose eating habits at Queens College were notoriously bad, has outdone himself.” That was when GT sponsored a 6 ft Super Hero eating contest at Hofstra. Near the top of my list is The Station House in Forest Hills, conveniently located across from the LIRR and down the block from the subway.

Film Reviews
Under The Skin Starring Scarlett Johansson Directed by Jonathan Glazer A24
Under The Skin is a film so unusual it defies conventional description. In the broadest sense, it is science fiction, yet it has none of the trappings you would typically associate with a story about an alien come to Earth to harvest human beings for sustenance. It is clearly fiction, yet it is predominantly shot as a guerilla documentary, with hidden cameras capturing interactions between Johansson and location natives who later had to be asked to sign release forms for use of the footage. It is one of those films that appears to be about something, but it contains so little exposition and so few traditional signposts that it takes a good deal of work to figure out exactly what that something is. More meditation than traditional storytelling, Under The Skin ponders the notion of what it means to be one thing as opposed to another, and it does so in a way that is both provocative and undeniably spooky. Jonathan Glazer distilled from Michel Faber’s novel the issues at the heart of his story about an alien poacher masquerading as a human in order to better blend in with the herd while culling it – and he then set out to film those issues. Gone are lurid descriptions of humans who are seduced, trapped, mutilated, fattened up, and broken down into their constituent parts for shipping as food, replaced by a series of essential questions: Can a predator ever be considered evil for obeying its nature? What
6 • Good Times Magazine - May 6 - 19, 2014
happens when that predator begins to connect with its prey? How long can any of us wear a particular “skin” without beginning to identify with it (a dilemma also being experienced in interesting ways by the character Athelstan on the History Channel’s hit series “Vikings”)? Glazer and co-writer Walter Campbell have chosen existential rather than explicit horror; the“black room,”where the film’s human victims are processed, is surreal and disorienting, but it is drawn from such basic nightmare archetypes that its dread is impossible to
not feel. Under The Skin is so consistently quiet, and Mica Levi’s score so evocative at times of white noise, that it is easy to slip into a contemplative, almost trance-like state –a condition that makes the film’s violent, catastrophic ending all the more jarring. This is all quite calculated, and it is all exceptionally smart. It is so easy to imagine Under The Skin as another bloated CGI behemoth starring Dwayne Johnson as John Whateverthehell, maverick LAPD detective, whose keen instincts help him uncover a hive of grotesque, bug-like creatures that harvest human beings in vast underground caves in the Hollywood Hills, but now it’s personal because they’ve taken his estranged wife, or maybe his son, blah blah blah, crazy big explosions, tearful reunion, the end. Instead, Under The Skin is a triumph of both style and substance. That Glazer and company actually succeeded in making the film they wanted is perhaps the biggest victory of all. – Michael Lee

The subject of the mega-popular Academy Award-winning documentary Searching For Sugar Man, folk/roots/pop star Rodriguez may be one of the most unusual success stories of modern musical times. This Detroit native first performed in the early 1970s to little success, but his work became legendary in South Africa, even though most people in that country believed he had died. In the 1990s, determined South African fans managed to seek out and contact him, which led to an unexpected revival of his musical career and the feature film based on his life. Now, Rodriguez is hotter than ever, and his concerts are selling out wherever he travels. This marks a rare appearance by the star in this area.

I
t seemed to take forever but Mets Lucas general manager Sandy Alderson Duda finally traded first baseman Ike Davis to the Pittsburgh Pirates. I asked Alderson at a hastily arranged press conference at Citi following the trade whether he was able to get maximum value for Ike considering that the Pirates knew that the Mets have made no secret of their desire to send him packing since the end of the 2013 season, and that the Mets had to clear a roster space for the return of centerfielder Chris Young from the disabled list. “We got the players that we have targeted,” Sandy said referring to minor league relief pitcher Zack Thornton and the mysterious player to be named later. Reports quickly surfaced that the player in question was centerfielder Austin Meadows who was a first-round pick in the 2013 amateur draft. Insightful New York Post columnist Kevin Kernan quickly asked “Why Duda over Davis?” to Alderson who tried to avoid direct baseball comparisons. The reality is that Ike is a far better fielder while Lucas may have a slightly better eye at the plate although both players strike out a ton. I followed up Kevin’s query by asking if Ike’s more lucrative contract played a part in the decision. “That wasn’t a primary factor. We preferred the fact that we have more control over Lucas Duda.” Translated that means Duda needs more major league time to qualify for free agency. As the press conference was winding down, I
asked Alderson if he was concerned about the public perception that once again the Mets, who when the 2014 season got underway, were in the lowest third for team payroll and had found a way to reduce it yet again. This is clearly a sensitive subject for Mets executives as he winced when he heard my question. “We’ll probably take on a few million in payroll soon,” Alderson promised without being more specific. Ike Davis met with the New York media just before he left Citi Field to catch a US Airways flight to Pittsburgh and he took the high road considering that he knew where he stood with Mets management for the last eight months. He concurred with Sandy Alderson that it didn’t make sense to have three first basemen on the roster (Right-handed hitting Josh Satin is the other player). He added that he very much enjoyed his time in New York. It’s to Ike’s credit that he was always a friendly and welcoming presence in the Mets clubhouse to media whether he was performing well or struggling at the plate which unfortunately was the case for most of the last two seasons. These elbow ligament tears appear to be contagious. First it was Mets reliever Bobby Parnell and now it’s Yankees starter Ivan Nova. At least we

Mike Woodson
Seeing forlorn Knicks head coach Mike Woodson having to face the media for his pre-game press conferences the last week of the regular NBA season reminded me of the Sean Penn-Susan Sarandon flick, “Dead Man Walking.” While the Knicks were a disappointment this year, their oft-injured forward Amar’e Stoudemire actually had a pretty good season although he is a far cry from the dominant player that he was when he played for the Phoenix Suns. Stoudemire has devoted a lot of time in recent years tracing his ancestors’ Jewish roots and he has made frequent trips to Israel. He seemed a bit

miffed that there wasn’t a box of matzo in the Knicks locker room when they played the Nets in Brooklyn, which coincided with the second night of Passover. He broke into a hearty laugh when I told him that I would try to sneak out some pieces from the Barclays Center press room and then asked him if he preferred Manischewitz or Streit’s. This is looking to be a big year for popular hiphop star Drake. He won rave reviews earlier in 2014 as host of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” His success there undoubtedly propelled ESPN executives to select him to host of this year’s ESPY Awards on
July 16. The just-completed New York International Auto Show gave the public probably their only chance to sit behind the steering wheel of a Maserati, Aston Martin, Porsche or Rolls-Royce. Motor sports were prominent at the Javits Center as Toyota displayed the cars that are driven by NASCAR stars Brian Vickers, Matt Kenseth, and Kyle Busch while General Motors dug into its past to exhibit the Camaro that was used as the pace car at the 1969 Indy 500. I ran into former Giants linebacker Jessie Armstead at the auto show. Armstead owns a number of car dealerships in New Jersey stretching from Englewood Cliffs down to the Trenton area. He started working in the retail auto business during his NFL playing days. Armstead is one of the few big name athletes that I have encountered who had no interest in either coaching or being a broadcaster although I have little doubt that he would have been successful in either endeavor. “The problem with broadcasting is that there is always going to be a new ‘hot name’ that the networks will want. This year it was Ray Lewis. Soon it will be Peyton Manning. That means that the older guys in the biz are going to get pushed out even if they are doing a fine job,” Jessie told me. Clearly he was referring to Shannon Sharpe and Dan Marino being shown the door by CBS. The WNBA has had trouble attracting mainstream press and public attention for numerous reasons and certainly having the nondescript New York Liberty as its flagship franchise has been a leading one. The league is well aware of the fact that the
Liberty never seem to have any superstars and arranged for the Connecticut Sun to trade former UConn star center Tina Charles to the Liberty last week. Charles grew up in Queens, a mere stone’s throw from St. John’s University, but opted to play for Geno Auriemma at Storrs, Connecticut. The New York Liberty will be playing their home games at Madison Square Garden again after a three-year sojourn at Newark’s Prudential Center. They were booted out of the world’s most famous arena as it was undergoing renovations.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Sally Field, Paul Giamatti, Denis Leary, and Dane DeHann Directed by Mark Webb Sony Pictures
Anyon who is a movie buff knows that films such as this one this are utterly critic proof. This new action comic book flick could have been titled Spider-Man Eats A Skybar and theaters would still be filled with screaming moppets hopped up on Everlasting Gobstoppers. No matter; Marc Webb’s sequel to 2012’s franchise re-start (bye, Tobey, hi, Andrew; choose your favorite hunky man/boy) proves that this “re-imagining” (the skin is crawling up our arms as we type that cliché) of Spidey has turned out to be a decent idea after all. This time out, Peter Parker (Garfield) forges on with his double life as a masked superhero, all the while brooding over Gwen Stacy; he’s also conflicted over a promise he made to Gwen’s dying father (Leary): He’d stop dating lovely Gwen to keep her safe from villains and prickly heat. But hey, here comes big trouble: A new bad guy, super-charged Electro (a miscast Foxx), and also his old friend Harry Obborn (DeHaan), who has come down with the same disease that offed his late father, and he wants Spider-Man’s blood, which he believes is the only thing that can save his life. It’s hard not to imagine any red or radioactiveblooded American guy not falling for Gwen, as
Stone’s chemistry with real-life boyfriend Garfield is off the charts. The lead, he of the highest hair since Little Richard, is fine as the neurotic hero; Foxx pretty much sleepwalks through his role as a super villian – but DeHaan’s Harry, much like Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Loki in the Thor movies, is star-in-the-making stuff; he adds a dark, complex note to a sincerely troubled young man. Plus, and we sound like a broken record, but the special effects are more stunning with each passing Marvel film. While we yearn for film adaptations of other
Marvel characters such as Sub-Mariner, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and 3-D Man (we’re just kidding, comics geeks), we reiterate that films based on comic books are the best motion pictures being made and released by Hollywood these days. They’re easily more entertaining than the romcoms, lame horror, and propaganda (The Other Woman, The Quiet Ones, Heaven Is For Real) that are clogging the six-plex. So shut off the left side of your brain, order a large buttered, and bask in all the non-educational, anti-intellectual stoopid action. Life is short. – Cody Bell

The Other Woman
Starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Directed by Nick Cassavetes Fox Films
The philandering husband has long been a staple of TV soap operas and probably every other show that has ever been broadcast on cable’s Lifetime Network. Film studios have generally shied away from making spousal cheating a central focus of a film because it has been done so frequently on television. A notable exception was 1996’s comedy The First Wives Club, starring Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, and Bette Midler as wives of successful men seek revenge on their former husbands for ditching them for younger women. Based on the coming attractions, The Other Woman appeared to be following the blueprint of The First Wives Club to the letter. The idea of three women giving a scoundrel a taste of his own medicine was the central plot, while three of the leads (Diaz, Mann, and Coster-Waldau) were north of 40 years old. Sadly, The Other Woman lacks the wit and character development of the classic comedy hit from the past. The film opens with high-powered New York attorney Carly Whitten (Diaz) enjoying a romantic dinner with venture capitalist Mark King (Coster-Waldau), a man she met two months ago and who she wants to introduce to

her dad. When Mark has to break a date with Carly because of an alleged plumbing problem in his Connecticut home, she decides to surprise him by taking a limo to Greenwich. When she knocks on the door, Mark’s wife Kate (Mann) answers. Quickly realizing that she has been dating a married man, Carly quickly excuses herself saying that she has the wrong address and vows never to speak to Mark again. Kate, although coming off as gullible to the point of infantile and pathetically needy even though she is intelligent, tracks Carly down through Mark’s cell phone. After some initial bickering, the tough-as-nails Carly bonds with the distraught Kate and vows to help her get what she deserves. Screenwriter Melissa Stack has the villainous Mark cheat on both Kate and Carly as he wins the affections of Amber
(the Sports Illustrated swimsuit supermodel Upton, who of course gets a bikini scene here), an impossibly attractive twenty-something. When Kate and Carly get a hold of Amber and explain Mark’s modus operandi, she joins them in their quest for revenge. The Other Woman squanders every opportunity: Carly went to college at Cornell and graduated Columbia Law School. In spite of being gorgeous, she is a quintessential New York career woman who can’t seem to find the right guy. Rather than explore that angle, the filmmakers spend more time trying to fit in as much slapstick comedy as well as defecation and vomit humor that seemed to be leftovers from the script of Bridesmaids. The ubersuccessful Mark King should have been a threedimensional character but instead we get is a cartoon-like villain; Coster-Waldau does the best that he can with him given the script’s limitations and is a dead ringer for fellow actor Aaron Eckhart. Don Johnson has fun playing yet another Lothario, in this case, Carly’s five-times divorced dad who likes to score with women 40 years his junior. It’s funny; the film conveys the message that men who cheat on their wives are evil, but there is something charming about a guy hitting on a girl who could be his granddaughter’s age as long as he is not married at the time. A performance worth noting is pop star Nicki Minaj as a wisecracking legal secretary; she’s a beacon of light in this bloated 110-minute movie. – Lloyd Carroll
MEDIA Socialites, hippies, sex, romance, marijuana, Ayahuasca, and spiritualism – what’s not to like about LeeZa Donatella’s latest novel, Beyond The Veil Of Illusion: The Awakening? The book introduces readers to different spiritual modalities through situations and dialogues between the characters such as meditation, consciousness, chakras, auras, soul mates, past lives, out-of-body experiences, shakti, vortices, and inter-dimensional travel, to name a few. The first installment, The Knife’s Edge, sold thousands of copies as Wolf toured conventions, bookstores, libraries,

He is hoping for even better things from the sequel, Citadel Of Fire. “I’m looking to reach even greater heights this time around,” said Wolf. “I want to take this project to the next level, showing the world an epic fantasy series that will stand the test of time.” In The Knife’s Edge, Gray (the principal character) discovered the nine Ronin who wield elemental powers, but he now must face the demons of his forgotten past. Citadel of Fire brings Gray to the magical world of Farhaven, which is full of danger, an enthrallingly but unpredictable woman, a desert full of thieves and magic, and a city of fire. “Think Lord of the Rings meets Knights of the Roundtable, or better yet, Seven Samurai,” Wolf explained. In addition its story line, Citadel Of Fire will feature stunning graphics. Wolf has hired two artists, an editor, and a designer as well as a marketing specialist. estimating a total of $10,000 for the project. In order to raise this capital, Wolf launched a Kickstarter campaign. He used a similar strategy for The Knife’s Edge last year, and was able to secure more than $3,000 in contributions. Depending on their level of donations, backers can receive eBooks, paperback editions, hardcover versions, T-shirts, and handmade wooden pendants of Citadel characters. Should Wolf exceed his Kickstarter goal, he will put the money toward the production of audio books. “The most exciting part of Citadel of Fire is discovering the Ronin and their great secret,” Wolf said. “Maybe you figured it out from the first book and maybe you didn’t. Now the saga gets to really unfold and we can solve this mystery.” … The recent death of professional wrestler The Ultimate Warrior at 54 came just two days following his live appearance on USA Network’s Monday Night Raw, and three days after he was inducted into the WWE’s Hall Of Fame … The rumor mill ran overtime that CBS and Craig Ferguson would part ways once his contract for “The Late Late Show” expired, and it was true: Ferguson leaves in December.

A lot of talented children have probably been asked by a parent to entertain family and friends - but when Jason Bonham was a child, the family friends he played his drums for could be anyone from Jimmy Page to some of the guys from the group Bad Company. That’s what happens when your father is drummer John Bonham, one of the original members of the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin. Now, Jason honors his father’s legacy with one of the hardest-hitting groups on the road.
We can’t think of a more soulful Jeffrey way to spend a Saturday night: Osborne Take Jeffrey Osborne (“On The Wings Of Love,” “Stay With Me Tonight,” “Don’t Stop”), one of the most romantic singers of his generation, and add Vocal Group Hall of Fame inductees The Whispers, today comprised of Leavell Degree, Nicholas Caldwell, Wallace Scott, and Walter Scott (“Rock Steady,” “And The Beat Goes On,” “It’s A Love Thing, “Lady,” “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong”), and you’ve got a perfect date night full of romantic sounds and the smoothest R&B ever to hit the Billboard charts. Remember Tim Meadows’ “The Ladies Man” on “Saturday Night Live”? We can only imagine he’s a huge fan of both of these legendary R&B artists.

One of Long Island’s most venerable and popular dance bands, Mambo Loco, will kick off the new “Summer Dance Thursdays” series at The Suffolk Theater in Riverhead on Thursday, May 15. Tickets are $20; doors, the restaurant, and the bar open at 6:30 pm, with the show beginning at 8 pm. For tickets and information, log on to suffolktheatre.com, or call the box office at (631) 727-4343. Since 2005, the continually busy Mambo Loco has become synonymous with the classic music of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican origin. Indeed, these are the types of “old school” Latin and Latin jazz sounds that get people off their chairs and onto the dance floor – a perfect choice for a music series designed to make people move. Mambo Loco’s roster of musicians includes lead vocalist Larry Belford; trombonist, violinist, singer, and percussionist Alfredo Gonzalez; pianist, melodica player, and singer Bill Smith; and bassist and vocalist Wayne Burgess, all of whom have performed with legendary artists ranging from The Drifters, The Coasters, and Billy Eckstine to Dr. John, Celia Cruz, and too many others to list here.

Hey guys, how are you all doing take a break and relax while also out there? It’s time for another enjoying a different experience such installment of your favorite EDM as a Ferris wheel or the 500 different column (because I know I’m your performers that will be around during favorite, right?)! Well, it’s officially the entirety of the festival. And for May and this is when the really big the best part of the festival, of course, festivals start to kick it into high gear! we have a superstar line up that can’t There are plenty of festivals going on be matched. There are a lot of my all over the place right now. One I’d like to highlight is the almighty Electric Daisy Carnival, happening at Metlife Stadium this year. It’s everything you could hope for in a festival: live music, top of the line artists, carnival rides, and an overall positive atmosphere that is very rare to find these days. It’s located in a pretty central, easy to access place from almost any public transportation system in New York or New Jersey. In Araabmuzik Dillon addition, the ticket prices are extremely reasonable, coming to a total of $240 for 2 days personal favorites coming this year, after taxes. This is significantly less which I am greatly looking forward than many other festivals. SURPRISING RETURNS Prince isn’t the only classic rocker coming back after a hiatus: The infamous hair metal band Kix has returned, signing with Loud & Proud Records. Steve Whiteman (lead vocals), Jimmy Chalfant (drums, vocals), Ronnie Younkins Kix (guitars), Brian Forsythe (guitars) and Mark Schenker (bass) are set to release their first new album in almost two decades on July 22; it’s the band’s original lineup with the exception of Schenker on bass. “The boys and I are so happy that our old friend, Tom Lipsky, has invited us to join the Loud & Proud family,” said Whiteman. “We worked with Tom and Madelyn Scarpulla on our last studio album, Show Business, and we’re looking forward to working with them again with the release of the first new Kix album in almost 19 years. We’ll still be coming to a dump near you very soon!” Learn more at kix-band.com … Golden-throated former Ace and Squeeze singer Paul Carrack not only has a new album, Rain Or Shine, but he’s about to support Eric Clapton on selected tour dates … Grizzled Canadian classic rockers Paul Loverboy (“Workin’ Carrack For The Weekend,” “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over”) are currently either seen or heard in national advertising campaigns for Taco Bell and Radio Shack, and are about to embark on a summer tour.
Prince The R&B/Rock King’s Majestic New Era
P
rince and Warner Bros. Records have announced a new agreement that will see the release of long-awaited, previously unheard music while giving the artist ownership of the master recordings of his classic global hits. At the same time, this new deal extends Prince’s relationship with Warner Brothers Records through an exclusive global licensing partnership that covers every album released from 1978 into the 1990s. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. For Prince fans worldwide, the new partnership will open a veritable goldmine of sounds both classic and undiscovered. The surprise announcement comes just in time for this summer’s 30th anniversary celebrations of the artist’s breakthrough album and film, Purple Rain, which were released in 1984. For the first time, Prince will be releasing a digitally remastered, deluxe version of this classic album. Other planned projects will follow.
I’ve been doing my best to download some songs I heard there that I really liked and was very excited to expand my music database. I think through all the hours I’ve spent searching and downloading, I can share a good amount of my new music with you guys. “Pompeii” was definitely a
Francis
Borgore
popular song this year at Ultra and the different remixes I heard got me hooked on the song as a whole. However, the Kat Krazy Remix of “Pompeii” was definitely one that stood out to me and is one that I’ve incorporated in my set and make sure I get to play every chance I get. It has the signature vocals that everyone recognizes and can sing along to while mixing in a dirty electro house drop that will make any party go crazy. On the other side of the spectrum, Dillon Francis previewed his remix of “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” by Daft Punk and then released it about
“A brand-new studio album is on the way, and both Warner Bros. Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship,” said Prince (the “Eye” was his spelling, not ours). “Everyone at Warner Bros Records is delighted to be working with Prince once again; he is one
a week after Ultra and is available as a free download from his Soundcloud. He takes the signature song and puts the Dillon Francis touch to it and turns it into a trap song that you most certainly will have to get down to. It’s literally uncontrollable. All I can say is thank god he officially released it or I don’t know how I would have been able to survive. Staying in the realm of trap, a new artist named Aryay has come to my attention. I’ve downloaded two of his songs and they are on constant repeat on my playlist. His original track “The Lawnmower” and his remix of “Trophies” by Drake are two dirty trap songs that have also made their way into my set. Before these songs I hadn’t heard of Aryay, but I expect big things from him in the future. Last song I’d like to bring attention to is the Psychic Type remix of “Raise Your Hands” by Ummet Ozcan. Psychic Type isn’t too well known at this point, but he has been making a name for himself with his extremely well done trap remixes. This song is no different and takes an iconic sounding drop and makes it even more epic. Ok, that’s all the time I have for you guys today. I’ll see you in a few weeks. Hit me up richiegtechno@ gmail.com for any comments and such. Just keep raging my friends!
of the world’s biggest stars and a truly unique talent,” said Cameron Strang, Chairman & CEO of Warner Bros. Records. “We are also very excited about the release of new and remastered music from one of his greatest masterpieces.” The past 18 months have seen a resurgence for Prince both live and on record. His recent appearance on “The Arsenio Hall Show” brought record ratings in many markets; his new “3rdeyegirl” Twitter account is logging hundreds of thousands of hits; and in February, Prince performed concerts with the band of the same name as his Twitter handle, 3rdeyegirl, in London. As this article was being worked on, Prince had released a new single, the ballad “The Breakdown,” for free streaming online. Prince’s re-signing with Warner Brothers comes 18 years after his historic breakup with the label, the home of “Purple Rain,” “Raspberry Beret,” and most of his classic early hits.

Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Jimi Hendrix, The Montauk Project use their sophisticated ears and serious chops to bring the energy and originality of classic rock to a modern context … The album’s intricate, hard-hitting sound lives up to the enigmatic connotations of the band’s name and their selfdescribed genre, ‘beach grunge.’” The Songs: “Good As Gold,” “Dreams,” “The Conquest,” “The Beast,” “Water Glisten,” “Lady In White,” “Pretty Girl,” “Black As Night,” “Wingman Anthem,” “Blackjack.” Bonus tracks: “The Beast,” “Lady In White.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to themontaukprojectmusic.com.

Who: Jenna Rose, a beautiful young singer and actress, seems well on her way to becoming Long Island’s next legitimate pop superstar. The teenager has already amassed hundreds of thousands of views for her online videos; she’s recorded with top music professionals as well as the legendary Dionne Warwick; and performed at top venues throughout the nation. The Artist & Her Sound: From her bio: “When Jenna was 11, ‘My Jeans’ went viral with more than 16 million views, making her an internet sensation quickly ... Jenna claims it was all a fluke, but maybe it was destiny because there’s no fluke about her talents as an artist, and maybe destiny wanted to make sure everyone knew it. When Jenna became a YouTube sensation, she soon was featured all over the media, with news coverage, teen magazine articles, interview, and performances on national television. “There have been a lot of great things happening with Jenna, but it all started out at the age of two when she was a dancer. She used to dance all over the house, so her mom put her in a performing arts school, where she took ballet and musical theater. “It was fun, but she really liked acting and dancing,” said her mother. At eight, she auditioned for High School Musical, and was cast as a cheerleader that sang.” Rose also performed in Ragtime and
Jenna Rose With Dionne Warwick
in Odella Williams off-Broadway, where she was cast in the lead role, also the youngest in the cast. As a singer and performer, Rose has already appeared at The Brookhaven Amphitheater, The NYCB Theater at Westbury during “The Totally Tube Show,” and The Middle East Club in Boston. She was also the winner of the Kidz Bop contest; her prize for winning was to sing in Madison Square Garden in front of 20,000 people. At the tender age of 10, Rose performed Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love Of All.” From the bio: “Now 15, Rose recently won two contests for the Weekend Top 30 Countdown on 103.5 KTU IHeart Radio for her song “Forget You” and the remix of “Forget You.” Recently, it was announced that Jenna is doing a song with the legendary Dionne Warwick. Jenna happened to be in Los Angeles performing at The Whiskey A Go Go when Dionne’s son, Damon Elliott (aka Buck 22 ), came down with his manager to see her perform. Damon
was impressed with Jenna and asked if he could do her album. She flew out to Arizona to do the album, and her dad thought of Jenna doing a remix with Dionne, and she (Warwick) agreed. They ended up doing ‘Walk On By’ and a music video together.” Rose’s new album, The Wonder Of You, is available on iTunes and Amazon. Upcoming shows for Jenna Rose and her dancers include Trump Plaza in Atlantic City on May 16; Islip Music Hall’s “Concert For A Cure“ on May 24; Amityville Music Hall on June 21; and more upcoming events. RHYTHM TRACKING Pop.Sex: Leave it to pop culture icon Angie Bowie to continually outdo herself. Not long ago, her book, Lipstick Legends, had the world buzzing, and now her assessment of centuries of sexuality as seen through the pop culture prism has made its way to bookstores and online conveyances. Angie’s new book, Pop.Sex, is a real eye opener and a journey though mainstream culture from the ancients right up to the present moment, timelining how the masses perceived and reacted to
mankind’s great lure sexuality. Of course, in the last century (the 1970s, to be specific), Angie herself participated in the reconstruction of sexual perceptions in pop culture during the glam rock/glitter era. Who better to detail that which came before and what was to follow? Pop.Sex is an enjoyable, involving read on many levels. Get a copy and find your level. Mad World: Where else but Long Island did the trend of “New Wave” find a home during the 1980s? It all started here in the pages of Good Times Magazine and on a radio station that would dare to be different, WLIR-FM (although I still haven’t forgiven them for never providing airtime to UK New Wave icon Toyah, and the carryover of Wayne County from the 70s into the 80s, when she became Jayne County). Neither Toyah or Jayne appear in the new book Mad World: An Oral History Of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 80s, but we certainly forgive that. This concise, beautiful book, cowritten by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, covers all the bases on the WLIR playing field (of
By Jimi LaLumia
course, I’m super partial to the excellent Adam Ant coverage), and has great color photos and on-target commentary as well as a foreword by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and an afterword by Moby. You know you need this; Mad World is published by Abrams Image, and it’s the find of the season. “Funny” Babs: It’s the 50th anniversary of Funny Girl (the Broadway play and later the film), and Sony/CBS has issued a deluxe package built around Barbra Streisand, who of course was the girl in Funny Girl. The film is out there, all modernized and looking sharp as an arrow, and the soundtrack album, of course, is digitalized and leaping forth from the speakers. More great stuff: Universal/ Motown has issued, as an MP3 album, the 1968 epic Diana Ross & The Supremes Sing And Perform Funny Girl, a real star turn for Ross just a year before she left the group to go solo. Of course, the Motown/ Ross release is my favorite, but Funny Girl itself was a big enough phenomenon of its time to be shared by both leading ladies, Barbra and Diana. Take your pick and enjoy the show. DC5: Thank you, PBS, for the recent two-hour documentary film about the band that gave The Beatles a run for their money from 1964 to 1967, none other than The Dave Clark 5. The business mastermind, Clark, ended the band as the 60s ended, so it’s easy to forget how huge and exciting The DC5 actually was – but this great film brought it all back for those of us who were teenyboppers when it was all happening. If you know who they are, find this film on
PBS; it will take you back to those magical years. If you don’t, you’re in for quite a surprising treat, so go to the PBS website and enjoy. DC5 forever!

Guys & Dolls
BITS & PIECES Hannah Thiem
Hannah Thiem:
Fiery New-Era Violinist
One of the hottest artists at present on the New York City scene, Hannah Thiem, has released the music video for her first single, “Brym al Mar,” from her upcoming EP, Brym. Thiem is a producer and violinist whose musical stylings are influenced by her nomadic spirit and her deep appreciation for electronic and ambient soundscapes. Her upcoming album will be her first release as a solo artist, though her previous works included her stint as the co-founder of the avant rock group, Copal, as well as the ambient electronic project Nyxyss. Her sonic foundation stems from her formative experiences with Eastern European, Nordic, and Middle Eastern music. Her album release show will be May 29 at Mercury Lounge in New York City. Learn more at hannahthiem.com.
Liz Kennedy
The Ultimate Late Bloomer
Liz Kennedy:
Singer and songwriter Liz Kennedy is taking on dates in support of her blues and folk-inspired pop/rock album, Speed Bump. The San Francisco-based vocalist debuted in 2006 with her debut album, Clean White Shirt. Now 63 (we couldn’t believe it, either), fit, beautiful, and full of the kind of life-affirming energy she could never have imagined before, she’s exceedingly confident with her choice – and coincidentally is inspiring others to take risks in middle age with the passions that drive them. Her guitarist, Joel Jaffe (who produced Speed Bump as well Kennedy’s previous recordings), is a renowned Bay Area-guitarist, engineer, and producer whose credits include Maria Muldaur, Lenny Williams, and Magic Christian. Influenced by such noted artists as Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon, Randy Newman, and Carole King, Kennedy adds her own stamp with her sandpaper and honey-tinged vocals on Speed Bump’s 14 dynamic folk/blues influenced pop/rock tracks. More info: lizkennedymusic.com.
Their New Single
Better Than Ezra: Better Than Ezra, perhaps best known for its massive radio hits “Good,” “Desperately Wanting,” and “Juicy,” has premiered the lyric video for its first single, “Crazy Lucky,” off the band’s upcoming new album. The single, which charted at #13 on iTunes Rock Chart at press time, was produced
by Grammynominated mixer/producer Tony Hoffer (Fitz & The Tantrums, M83, Beck, Silversun Pickups). The single is now available on iTunes. “It’s about that serendipitous moment when you meet the person you are meant to be with and it was luck, fate, and destiny that made it happen … it’s kismet,” said vocalist Kevin Griffin of the new single Better Than Ezra will headline at The Space in Westbury on July 25.
Ready To Take Over Pop World
Meg Myers:
Sultry Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Meg Myers has announced plans to join New Zealand pop duo Broods on a spring tour. Myers’ current single, “Desire,” is currently rising on the charts. In addition to the spring tour, Myers will Better also hit the Than stage at Ezra multiple festivals this summer, including New York City’s Governors Ball on June 8. Myers released her new EP, Make A Shadow, on Atlantic Records in February, and will release her full-length debut album later this year. Her music has been compared to musical icons such as Fiona Apple, Joan Osborne, and Alanis Morrissette. Myers, who draws inspiration from Sting, Fleetwood Mac, and Nirvana, has toured with The Pixies, and sold out multiple headline shows at venues in Los Angeles, including the famed Troubadour.
Roxy Music Star Is Back
Bryan Ferry:
British rock music icon Bryan Ferry, formerly of Roxy Music, has embarked on his first North American Tour in three years, currently winding down America’s roadways. Ferry also appears on Norwegian house producer Todd Terje’s debut album, reworking Robert Palmer’s 80s classic “Johnny And Mary.” “When we were finishing my ‘Olympia’ album in 2010,
Meg Myers
we started to get some of the tracks remixed by contemporary producers,” said Ferry. “Terje did a fabulous version of ‘Alphaville,’ a song I had written with Dave Stewart. After that, we asked him to try remixing ‘Love Is the Drug’ and more recently ‘Don’t Stop The Dance,’ both of which worked very well. I eventually met Terje in Oslo when I was on tour with my band, and we got on famously.” Keep up with the tour and new music news via bryanferry.com.
LI Star Inks Atlantic Deal
Melanie Martinez:
News flash: Atlantic Records has signed area singer/songwriter Melanie Martinez; her The Dollhouse EP arrives on May 20, with the first single, “Dollhouse,” available now. Having spent much of 2013 selling out clubs across the country, Martinez will celebrate the new EP with her biggest national tour to date, kicking
Melanie Martinez off June 4 at Philadelphia; she’ll perform on June 24 at The Marlin Room in New York City. Martinez – currently at work finishing her debut album – has been hailed as a provocative singer, songwriter, and visual presence. This Long Island native captured the country’s imagination with her arresting performances on the 2012 season of NBC’s “The Voice,” and her career has been skyrocketing since then.
