PERFORMANCE

Photos by Wayne Herrschaft, headlampdigital.com

Every Trace Of Greatness

The country superstar emerged onstage through a brightly illuminated prop doorway to join his band, one that had already started playing the hit “(This Ain’t No) Thinkin’ Thing.” Cameras were rolling as the band was rocking for broadcast on the cable network AXS TV. The evening would feature what pretty much amounted to a live Trace Adkins’ Greatest Hits pacakge – much to the delight of his audience, not to mention those who will be watching the recording on television a few weeks later. Adkins sang as strongly as his sixpiece band played, with a pair of female backup singers rounding out the act. Before the show, no less than AC/DC had blared through the speaker system, and it was easy to wonder if the rockers may have set the bar a little too high. Any concerns proved to be unfounded; the rhythm section was built Ford tough, hugging the road at high speed. As the band continued on with “Songs About Me,” “Big Time,” “This Ain’t No Love Song,” and “Southern Hallelujah,’ it was clear that on this evening the rebels had turned the tables and were easily conquering the Yankees. The headliner wore a physiquehugging shirt, jeans, and a leather cowboy hat. He gyrated south of the border like a hypnotist’s watch, and the belles at the ball were clearly under his

spell. Billy Ray Cyrus may have seduced his audience with similar Chippendales tactics a couple of decades back, but the difference here was that Adkins also delivers the musical goods. Elvis Presley’s famous hips were amputated from television screens in the 1950s on “The Steve Allen Show” and on Ed Sullivan, and the

collective imagination of American women may have filled in the blanks with more than a mere mortal man could actually produce. The overt physical aspect to Adkins’ stage act risks ridicule if the music and appearance lack in any way, shape, or form. Unlike the ongoing punch line that is Miley Cyrus’ father, the joke is

definitely not on Trace. The show continued on with the hits, including “You’re Gonna Miss This,” “There’s A Girl in Texas,” “Every Light In The House,” and “Marry For Money.” After the latter number, the singer thanked the audience for his success that includes more than 10 million records sold. “You’ve all been good to me, and I appreciate it,” Adkins said with conviction. Late in the show, Adkins and his players turned The Paramount into their own downhome “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.” For an encore, Adkins said he would “lay down some words of wisdom that come from an old sage.” The band then closed out the evening with the rocking “Take It From Me.” The singer departed after telling the crowd: “Take care of yourself – ain’t nobody else gonna do it.” The evening opened with CW’s “The Next: Fame Is At Your Doorstep” reality singing competition winner, Michael Ray, who performed a seven-song acoustic set, including a nifty cover of Tom Petty’s “Last Dance With Mary Jane.” It seems a safe bet that Ray will be back again in the future, but with someone opening the festivities for him. – Bob Wilson

If you only know Muldaur for her 1974 mega-hit “Midnight At The Oasis” featuring Amos Garrett's now-legendary guitar solo, you're missing out on a lot: These days, the still-sultry singer merges elements of roots, gospel, jazz, folk, and blues into her songs and shows, and the result is an entertaining revelation. Not bad for a music legend that began her career with The Even Dozen Jug Band and The Jim Kweskin Jug Band in the 1960s before stepping out on her own.

Tilles Center, Greenvale October 24 at 8 PM tillescenter.org (516) 299-2752

Everyone's favorite horror/comedy comes to life in this scary yet funny show that's a perfect lead-in to Halloween season. All the elements of Sam Raimi's cult classic films are combined in one crazy theatrical experience. A $71 “Fan Circle” ticket gets you up close in the "Splatter Zone"! Those seated in the designated "Splatter Zone" seating locations will be splashed by stage "blood" and get increasingly wet over the course of the performance. Here’s a suggestion: Catch one of the original Evil Dead films before you attend this show – particularly Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn. The film that made Bruce Campbell a star will give you a great idea of what to expect from this utterly whacked show.

Suzanne Vega Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center November 1 at 8 PM • (631) 288-1500 whbpac.org

With her stark, vibrato-less voice, Vega seamlessly melds poetic lyrics with contemporary folk song structures to create a sound that is distinctively her own. Her latest release, Tales From The Realm Of The Queen Of Pentacles, opens the door to an eclectic mix of carefully crafted works that give us a peek into her mastery – one that most of the public is already familiar with, thanks to her bestknown songs “Luka,” “Tom's Diner,” and “Solitude Standing.”

This Is MY Column Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's about time I got this column together. Been a busy summer, but had some great concert experiences that would like to share(compare) with you all. Remember when Long Island was called a "concert wilderness"? Those days are long gone, and the biggest problem some nights is to decide between conflicting shows at the Space, Paramount, Boulton, Westbury Music Fair (sorry, I shall forever call it this), plus the growing college PACs offering really top notch entertainment. Lewis Black at Westbury Music Fair....Black has managed to stay topical, yet he seems to be funnier (in a drier sense) than when he ranted more. He still rages about government, taxes, and all the hot button topics, but he intersperses it more with observations on getting older, colonoscopies (always a winner for a squirming audience), and very funny stuff on taking a trip to Montreal by bus because he refused to pay the airlines exorbitant short route prices, even though he could well afford it. Black engages his audience, doesn't talk down to them, and he is a must see when he comes through next. For every ying, there must be a yang, I guess. Chelsea Handler, also at Westbury, was one of the worst nights of comedy (and entertainment) I can remember. Her early summer appearance was highlighted by gross attempt at humor that were so off color and target, that even I, who can treat "fuck" as a noun or verb, couldn't deal with it. Chelsea's idea of humor, or commen-

tary, or whatever, was to show a graphic video of 80 year old men, performing oral sex, claiming that her father was one of them. If true, heaven help him for having such a wonderful daughter. Failing to get any positive reaction the first time, she proceeded to a 2nd screening of the video, who knows why. She also did a scatological number that my son would have thought was cool when he was in junior high and everyone giggled when the word "shit" was used. Chelsea managed to do at least 15 minutes on her being covered in it. All to explain why her assistant packs extra pairs of panties for her trips. Billy Idol, at the Space At Westbury, was a stand out, probably the best show we saw all summer. Idol has taken a long time off from performing, but he is none the worse for it. In tremendous shape, both physically and vocally, he roused his legions of fans with raucous renditions of everything from "White Wedding" and the required "Rebel Yell." He has a new studio album titled Kings & Queens of the Underground.

6 • Good Times Magazine - October 21 - November 3, 2014

By Rich Branciforte Just as interesting, he has just come out with an autobiography called, what else, "Dancing With Myself." which chronicles the trip this former Generation X frontman has gone on when he ruled the roost of dance/punk airwaves. Billy Idol, with the new album, his tour, and the book, has re-established himself as someone to be reckoned with in 2014, nearly 3 decades after he lit the clubs on fire. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Westbury Music Fair...I've seen this band 19 times now and the road could go on forever. I first saw them in a hell hole club in West Palm Beach in the 70's, and saw them many times when Ronnie was alive. The one thing that never ceases to amaze me, is that the band, like the Allmans, regardless of how many personnel changes they endure, seems to keep its level of musicianship so very high. Reaching into that melting pot of Lynyrd Skynyrd Southern Rock bands, the Skynyrds keep evolving and yet maintaining their roots. If there was ever a song that should be

the national anthem of rock n roll, it's "Free Bird." And would anyone like to guess how many times "Sweet Home Alabama." has been played on air or covered by cover bands over the years. To Johnnie & the Boys.....Turn it up. A great show, and there was one person in the audience who wasn't on their feet for every luxurious minute of it. Kansas at Westbury Music Fair..another classic rock band that has aged gracefully, and put on a really fine outing with each musician showing his skill to the fullest. From "Carry on Wayward Son" on down, this was a fun night for all and another great example of why Westbury has such a devoted core audience. Schwaygar at Spa, East Meadow...a totally self-serving review, but it was a thrill to see my 21 year old son more than hold his own with a group of djs at this East Meadow Friday night hot spot. I've seen him several times doing performances, but it was something different to see 400 convulsing bodies twist to his mix of techno, house, twerk, Michael Jackson, and more, as he pumped the air and urged the crowd on. Okay, been a busy time, we're getting ready to announce our big Legends of Long Island Rock show on November 22 at Mulcahy's with White Fire, Mazarin, Full House and a few more of the bands that made us what we are today. A true tribute to the bands and clubs of the late 70s and early 80s, and hopefully giving them some of the recognition they deserve. And to Jerry Korn, wherever you are sport, goodnight.

The Judge

judge; even Hank and his brothers refer to their father not as “dad” but rather as “Judge.” Welcoming back Hank to (fictional) Carlinville, Indiana is his high school love, Samantha (Farmiga), the girl he stood up at the prom so that he could go to a Metallica concert 25 years earlier. Hank’s game plan is to stay a few days after the funeral and then return to Chicago. “Nobody wants to return to Carlinville. Everyone wants to escape from it,” he says early in the film. Unfortunately for Hank, his dad gets arrested on a

vehicular homicide charge just as he is about to board a plane home. To make matters worse, the victim was a hoodlum who had served time for murder ... and had been sentenced by Judge Palmer. A special prosecutor, Dwight Dickham (Thornton) wants to go after the judge on a “murder one” charge, and it’s up to Hank to try to save the day and act as his dad’s attorney. Obviously, Hank and Judge Palmer butt heads over how to handle the case, and the trial preparation serves as the catalyst for the two of them airing their lengthy list of grievances from the time Hank was a little boy. On the surface, this is a formulaic film; Duvall is playing yet another version of a drill sergeant that he has done countless times before. The successful hotshot returning to the little town he thought that he happily left behind many moons ago has been retold countless times. Can you guess: Hank will get an appreciation for the values he used to deride by the time the closing credits roll. However, what makes The Judge appealing is the acting of the entire cast. Downey has long played the guy with the clever riposte, but his character is far more complex than he’s played before. He’s also generous sharing screen time with his fine supporting cast, especially Thornton, who plays against type as a low-keyed prosecutor. It was easy to wish for Thornton’s and Downey’s characters to mix it up more, but their few scenes together are terrific. The overall verdict on The Judge is that it’s worth seeing. – Lloyd Carroll

Nick, against his will, becomes “the most hated man in America” by a public that believes he caused the disappearance, if not her murder. Then again, he brings on a lot of the scorn; it's clear that he hasn't always told the truth, and he's starting to act quite strange. During it all, the media's freeding frenzy about the lurid case seems nearly as bad as the supposed crime itself. To tell you more would be to reveal the secrets to a mystery, but we can state this: Veteran director David Fincher paints a gorgeous scenario that truly is hard to fathom; and the entire cast – even the much-maligned Tyler Perry as Nick's laywer – is

superb. And, yes, that's Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Emily Ratajkowski in a small role as Nick's mistress. Gone Girl isn't anything important; at its base, it drools and salavates over the intimacies and foibles of an attractive married couple. But then again, that's the fun of all this, and it's probably the commoner's favorite cliché: Even the rich and beautiful can have lives even more screwed up than ours. It's an even better allegory on how the media has completely lost its way, causing us to lose ours at the same time – and it’s a film that makes us question what real love is these days. It’s strong stuff despite its weak core. – Cody Bell

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton Directed by David Dobkin Warner Brothers

It’s easy to see why Robert Downey Jr. was drawn to this project, both as an actor and as a businessman: This is the first film from his own production company, Team Downey. It’s also a chance for Downey to have a lead role that’s tailor-made for him – the lone wolf who marches to his own beat, snaps off one-liners, and settle scores in the process. It’s easy to care about the characters in the film and the writing is first rate, although there is little here that’s original. Hank Palmer (Downey Jr.) is a shark-like Chicago defense attorney who charges top dollar, but can back it up as he is able to get his rogue’s gallery of clients “not guilty” verdicts because of his cross-examination abilities and extraordinary oratory skills. In a memorable opening scene, prosecutor Mike Kattan (David Krumholtz) asks him how it feels to help the guilty get off: “The innocent can’t afford me,” he says in a matter-of-fact tone while standing before a urinal. Palmer is about to defend an embezzler when he gets a phone call from his brother, informing him that his mother died. Attending her funeral means having to return to the hometown that he has been away from for nearly 20 years – and a reunion with his father, Joseph Palmer (Duvall), from whom he has long been estranged. His dad is best known in the community as a no-nonsense

We'll admit it: This is the type of film we expected to hate, based on its pre-release facts: It stars the ever-preachy Ben Affleck and the seemingly forced-down-our-throats new British “star” Rosamund Pike, the star of previous crap such as Jack Reacher and A Long Way Down; it's based on yet another lightweight bestseller that did well in paperback and on e-readers; and it was seemingly advertised, complete with the prerequisite spooky mystery music, on every show on TV (as well as on magazine covers) for weeks on end. We'll also admit when we are wrong: Gone Girl is a gripping, riveting, and, at times, troubling mystery and drama, and easily one of the year's best and most entertaining films. Pike, thankfully, is talented and a star in the making; Affleck delivers an understated performane; and the entire film reeks of originality and daring. For once, we are exceptionally happy to have such dashed expectations – as is, apparently, the filmgoing public, which made this the #1 movie the first weekend it was released. It's all so simple: At the time of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick (Affleck) reports that his wife, Amy (Pike), is missing. Since Amy is blonde and beautiful, there's an immediate media frenzy about the case, with people taking sides;

Even if the Mets’ pitching lives up to its billing during the next couple of years, they may be doomed to still not playing baseball into October unless they upgrade their lineup, which given the team’s penurious ways does not seem likely. As unlikely as this seemed just a couple of months ago, it now appears that a Mets player has a good shot at winning a major post-season award, as pitcher Jacob deGrom has emerged as a favorite to be named the National League Rookie of the Year. tome. The CBS Sports Network has deservedly gotten a lot of media attention with its Tuesday night show, “We Need To Talk.” This is the first sportsthemed show to feature only female air personalities, as Allie LaForce, Tracy Wolfson, and the doyenne of female sportscasters, Lesley Visser, along with a rotating roster of current and retired athletes such as Swin Cash, Lisa Leslie, and Dara Torres, discuss the issues of the day. Thankfully, “We Need To Talk” is not like “The View,” which frequently breaks down into nonsensical debates strictly designed to highlight the personalities of the participants. What I liked about the “We Need” debut was that you quickly forgot about gender and were drawn into the intelligent discussion of the topics at hand. TTPM (Time To Play More) is the semiannual event of the toy industry, designed to show off its latest wares to the media. For the holiday season, Wicked Cool Toys will issue a limited edition doll of WWE mainstay John Cena, while Jazwares is introducing a line of action figures called NBA Heroes; one of those “heroes” is Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony whose figure looks more like hip hop legend Snoop Dogg than it does “Melo.” My favorite toy at TTPM was Skyrocket’s Fart Piano, a small keyboard consisting of one round of treble notes that makes flatulent noises in the right key. All joking aside, it’s a fun way to learn how to read music, and could entice kids into playing musical instruments. but 3-D TV is widely acknowledged to be a major flop. ESPN also decided to drop its 3-D network last year. Ironically, Sony has found a market for the sets, as the medical community has found 3-D television beneficial for performing delicate surgery. It appears Ultra HDTV will be the next big ticket item instead of 3-D.

JIM GAFFIGAN

The World’s Funniest Foodie At NYCB Theatre At Westbury

Gaffigan is a Grammy-nominated standup comedian, actor, and author, as well as the father of five children. He has starred in four cable television specials, including “Mr. Universe,” “Beyond The Pale,” and “King Baby”; the fourth, “Obsessed,” debuted this past spring on Comedy Central. He is the author of the New York Times best selling book, Dad Is Fat, and has just published Food: A Love Story. He has appeared in a number of comedies and dramas including “Portlandia,” “Flight Of The Conchords,” “Law And Order,” and “Bored to Death.” It’s been nothing but plaudits and

platinum for the comedian in recent years. The pre-order for “Obsessed” charted #1 on iTunes, which gives Gaffigan his fifth album in the Top 25 Comedy category on iTunes. In May 2013, Jim’s first book, Dad Is Fat, was released by Crown Publishing and debuted at #5 on the New York Times Best Sellers List and remained on the list for 17 weeks. Gaffigan has had breakout guest appearances on many comedies and dramas ranging from “Portlandia” to HBO’s cult hits “Flight Of The Conchords” and “Bored To Death” to

dramatic roles in all three versions of “Law & Order.” In recent years, Gaffigan has also become a mainstay on the big screen with memorable roles in Going The Distance, Away We Go, and It’s Kind of a Funny Story. In 2011, he further broadened his career: Gaffigan starred in his first Broadway production, That Championship Season. However, it’s Gaffigan’s comedy that has made him one of the funniest stars on the scene, with frequent appearances on late-night talk shows.

ELECTRIC AVENUE PROFILES Fingers’ 31st Celebration

As GT keeps digging deeper, we find a wealth of interesting businesses and players through out the Island. Here's a few you should be tuned in to... Who doesn't know "Fingers", the affable metal genius who has hosted the Fingers Metal show on WBAB for the past 31 years? Fingers has been a fixture on the scene, but his run has outlived dozens of radio station changes and hosts in an industry that isn't known for its longevity. We caught up with Fingers pre-show recently, and he shared some interesting memories. He credits his longevity to the fact that he still loves what he's doing, and has a genuine interest in interacting with his fans. Fingers is a throwback to the golden days of WNEW-FM with Peter Fornatale and Alison Steele, "The Nightbird", plus a host of talent on WFUV. The radio business today is all stats and figures, cost cutting, amalgamating, mergFingers ing. Every last minute is analyzed for its dollar yield potential, so with that in mind, it's quite an achievement that WBAB has given Fingers the green light to chat along with his plays.Fingers is more than a DJ spinning tunes, he is a storyteller, weaving a story for his listeners. After serving as the roadie for rock band White Fire, Fingers became a fixture on the local club circuit when he took over the WBAB van, dispensing swag at legendary clubs after having served as DJ at Beggars Opera in Queens. Fingers has met his share of celebrities, but his fondest memories are of a dinner for four with Ozzy and his wife Sharon, where Ozzy was less the madman and more the philosopher, and when he interviewed Metallica for the Master of Puppets Tour and predicted they would hit it big...How right he was. And now, Fingers is returning to his roots when he starts a weekly residency at Revolution in Amityville, which kicks off on October 25th with Doro and a host of metal legends. Fingers laughs as he remembers that some 30 years ago, Good Times wrote a review of him and called him "enigmatic." Boy, has he lived up to that call.

By Rich Branciforte Schools of Music are sprouting like mushrooms...it seems there's one on every corner, each with its own flavor and specialty. But, the school often reflects the personality of its owner, and its no truer than in the case of Monica Rubin, the very personable owner of School of Rock franchise in Rockville Centre. Monica's roots in rock go back to the days when she was a rock photographer...from there it progressed to publicizing and then working with many local bands, including her son's. The day we visited Monica in RVC, she was a whirlwind of activity, overseeing employees, promotion and talking to us. School of Rock is like a neighborhood hangout for creatives, a place where music lovers can meet similar kids of all ages but of similar interests. She often has up to 25 students working together and playing, the School has 2 rehearsal rooms, SCHOOL OF ROCK, RVC including a large one for recitals. Monica has assembled an all star teaching crew, including 12 instructors, plus Joan Jett's lighting technician teaching a lighting class. Monica's son Michael works at the school. He was accepted to the prestigious Clive Davis NYU Program, and has performed with the School of Rock All Stars, the cream of all School of Rock students nationally. He has also released an ep. On January 17th the RVC School of Rock players will take over K.J. Farrell's for a performance. To learn more about the School, contact Monica at 516-599-5909 or visit them at 197 N. Long Beach Rd, Rockville Centre.

T

he New York City-based Celtic rock band Black 47 has had many imitators, but few who have been able to match their power, righteous voice, and mastery of the art form that this legendary group first brought to the table so many years ago. Mulcahy’s Pub & Concert Hall will be the site of a special event: Black 47 performing its last show on Long Island on Saturday, October 25 at 9 pm with special guests The Legendary Murphys and The Gobshites. Tickets for this and all upcoming Mulcahy’s shows are available at the Mulcahy’s box office; for more information, call (516) 783-7500 or log on to muls.com. Advance tickets are also available at ticketweb.com.

BLACK 47

Their Final LI Show: A Mulcahy’s Event

Larry Kirwan’s legendary Irish-themed rock group has announced it is disbanding in November, exactly 25 years after its first performance. What a legacy: Black 47’s songs have covered topics from the Northern Ireland conflict to civil rights and urban unrest in contemporary New York. Put this one in the “not to be missed” category. As for the recorded side of the vast canon of Kirwin and his band: The album Rise Up is now available at all gigs. Larry Kirwan has compiled 15 tracks of remastered favorites and rarities recorded over Black 47’s controversial career. Also, the band’s final studio album, Last Call, was released earlier this year. It is available on all digital platforms (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) as well as

on traditional CD. For the few who might not know: Black 47 espouses an unblinkingly political and thoroughly Irish form of rock & roll, with songs covering topics from the Northern Ireland conflict to civil rights and urban unrest in contemporary New York. Black 47 earned their chops playing the pub scene in Manhattan and self-producing their first indie record, Black 47, before converting The Cars’ Ric Ocasek to the cause and gaining mainstream attention with their second album. On September 18, 2013, Black 47 issued this statement: “In early November 2014, exactly 25 years after our first gig, Black 47 will disband. There are no fights, differences over musical policy, or general skulduggery, we remain as good friends as when we first played together. We just have a simple wish to finish up at the top our game after 25 years of relentless touring and, as always, on our own terms. The last gig we played at The South Buffalo Irish Festival was as good as

any we’ve ever performed. Our goal now is to play another full year plus and dedicate all of those gigs to you who’ve supported us through thick and thin ... We would like to say goodbye to you all personally and will make every effort to come play in your city, town, college, pub, club, or performing arts center … Black 47 has always been more than a band, we’ve spoken out for the nationalist population in the North of Ireland, against the war but for the troops in Iraq, for our gay brothers and sisters, immigrants, legal and undocumented, as well as for the voiceless of 1845-47; but in the end it all comes down to the music, the songs, and the desire to give audiences the time of their lives and send them home smiling and, perhaps, with a question on their lips. We look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming gigs.” Those final shows will include this performance at Mulcahy’s; make plans now to be at one of the true musical events in Long Island this year.

Electric Avenue EXTRA Fair Pay For Classic Artists: On September 22, the legendary rock group The Turtles won a critical legal victory in their lawsuit against Sirius XM (Flo & Eddie Inc. v. Sirius XM Radio Inc.). The Turtles sued because Sirius XM has taken the position that it doesn't need permission – and therefore doesn't need to pay for use of – recordings protected by state law, even though it does pay for recordings that are protected by federal law. On September 22, a California federal court sided with the Turtles, holding that Sirius XM infringed Flo & Eddie's rights by playing their recordings on satellite [and internet] radio without a license. Earlier this year, SoundExchange joined with a coalition of artists in launching Project72, a campaign to ensure fair compensation for those who recorded music before 1972 and in support of H.R. 4772, the RESPECT Act. "This decision in California confirms what we have always known: All sound recordings have value, and all artists deserve to be paid fairly for the use of their music. It does not – and should not – matter whether those recordings are protected by state or federal law," said SoundExchange president and CEO Michael Huppe. "While we are thrilled

Breaking Music News with The Turtles' legal

Thhee victory, it's unfortunate T Tu T ur rttlleess that artists and labels

were forced to pursue litigation just to receive fair payment for their art. Legacy artists like The Turtles built the foundation of music today – music that helps Sirius XM make billions of dollars a year – and it is outrageous that some digital radio services believe they can use the music of legacy artists for free. It is clear now more than ever that Congress should quickly move to pass The RESPECT Act. The bill, introduced by Representatives George Holding (R-NC) and John Conyers (DMI), would require digital radio services to pay royalties to pre-1972 artists when their music is played. The RESPECT Act would also give Sirius XM, Pandora, and other services an easy and efficient way to get the rights that the federal court in the Turtles case has confirmed they need – and to give the artists the payment they deserve." Other veteran (called by some “legacy”) artist spoke out in support of the decision: "It is good that a federal judge made clear that online and mobile music services that have pre-1972 recordings on

Bundle Up This Fall: Apogee Electronics and D’Addario, the world’s largest manufacturer of musical instrument strings and accessories based here in Long Island, have partnered to offer advanced guitar accessory bundles for guitarists and bassists. For $99.90, the bundle includes the Apogee JAM guitar interface for iPad, iPhone and Mac, D’Addario’s next-generation NYXL electric guitar strings, and the rugged 10-foot American Stage guitar cable (the products have a combined value of $122.60 when sold separately). For bass players, the bundle is also available with D’Addario’s XL bass guitar strings at the same price of $99.90, bringing overall savings up to $28.91. “For years, Apogee has devoted its technical expertise to developing products such as the Apogee JAM that are essential for the modern guitar or bass player,” says Apogee CEO Betty Bennett.

their playlists should pay the artists who created these recordings,” said famed producer T Bone Burnett. “This decision puts in high relief how arbitrary the idea of 1972 is as a dividing line. If Aretha Franklin is driving listeners to a digital music service, she should share in the revenue that is generated.” "Today, we are one step closer to pre-1972 music creators receiving fair pay,” said Richie Furay, a member of Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and a solo artist. “The ruling against Sirius XM for playing, but not paying Flo & Eddie (aka The Turtles), is a victory in music licensing history." SoundExchange is an independent nonprofit performance rights organization representing the entire recorded music industry. Who: Klyph Black and John Sparrow, famous for their performances this year at top area venues such as The Stephen Talkhouse, recently released this new album, produced by Christian Cassan with the duo. The Artists & Their Sound: From the duo's one-sheet: “Klyph Black and John Sparrow are a New York-based acoustic duo that has been performing for years to receptive crowds. In the past, they have opened shows for The Subdudes, The New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Mick Taylor, Taj Mahal, Hot Tuna, and many other national acts. They have been joined on stage during the past years by Charles Neville, as well as Grammy winner Terrance Simien. “Klyph and John met years ago through a mutual friend while John was working with Johnny Sparrow & The Vidals and Klyph with a band named Urgent, which was signed to Manhattan Records and produced by Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople) and Mick Ronson (David Bowie). The duo hit it off and a friendship began; a few years later Black & Sparrow was formed. They performed to sell-out crowds in Switzerland following the release of their first album, Friend And Partner. “Black wrote songs that have appeared on

the TV shows 'Felicity' and 'Alias.’ Sparrow scored the movies Schmucks and Marie, in which he also had a major acting role. In the interim, Black joined The Zen Tricksters, playing bass guitar, recording, and touring nationally. He next teamed up with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Donna Jean Godchaux (The Grateful Dead), recording their album, Donna Jean & The Tricksters. “Black & Sparrow, back together again

during the past couple of years, have picked up where they left off, with new songs and sell-out crowds. Their songs have taken on a whole new dimension with the addition of a full-band behind their two acoustic guitars: Randolph A. Hudson III is a virtuoso on baritone six- and 12-string guitars. He has played with The Fugs and The Psychedelic Furs, and has toured with Bongwater and Magnuson/Kramer. Michael Mazzaraco on bass is a gradute of The Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase, and is also currently a studio owner, recording engineer, and multi-instrumentalist. James Beard on drums is a multipercussionist who studed with drum greats Jack DeJohnette and Tony Williams; he studied at The University of Miami with a major in applied percussion, studio music, and jazz.” The Songs: “Gunslinger,” “No One Said It'd Be Easy,” “The Reason Why,” “Time To Go,” “Just For The Nights,” “Tuff Livin',” “Just Let Me Go,” “Car Song,” “Down The Road,” “Now That We're Through.” To Learn More About The Artists: Log on to blackandsparrow.com, or find them at Facebook.

he nationally touring Led Zeppelin tribute band Get The Led Out takes the stage on Saturday, November 1 at 8 pm at The Space at Westbury. Tickets are now on sale via ticketmaster.com. Get The Led Out is a group of professional musicians who are passionate about their love of the music of Led Zeppelin. It’s been their mission to bring the studio recordings of the original group to life on the big concert stage. This is not an impersonator act, but rather a group of musicians who were fans first, striving to do justice to one of the greatest bands in rock history. From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured

the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians; utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO recreate the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. When you hear three guitars on the album, GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage. No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity. Dubbed by the media as “The American Led Zeppelin,” Get The Led Out offers a strong focus on the early years. They also touch on the deeper cuts that were seldom, if ever, heard in concert

Bryan Gallo

A Singer/Songwriter For A Modern World

Who: Bryan Gallo is a Long Island based singer/songwriter, and the former front man of the band Attic Space. The Artist & His Sound: From the artist’s official bio: “Gallo’s songs are inspired by late nights in bars, the backseats of cars, and the pressures and consequences of living life romantically. Intrigued by both the sounds of alternative country/rock and wistful pop music, he embarked on a solo career and began to pen songs that would be deeply personal but still readily accessible. Steeped in reflective heartache, the lexicon of Gallo’s lyrics stands as a testament to his raw talent as a musician while weaving a flush and relatable narrative. “He’s opened for notable acts such as Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate fame and Bobby Bare Jr. Gallo has also headlined The Patchogue Theater’s ‘Live In The Lobby‘ series to much acclaim, and has played other storied venues across Long Island including The Homegrown Music Café, The Vail Leavitt Music Hall, and the historic Guild Hall. Not always confined to the Island that he calls home, Bryan

has performed at New York Citybased venues including Pianos and The Mercury Lounge. Whether it be an intimate gig at a tavern or café or on a large stage setting under the lights, Bryan’s words and melodies stick with audiences long after the show is over. “Gallo’s debut album, The Party Guest, will be released on October 23. Pete Mancini of the Bellrosebased alt/country band Butchers Blind served as producer for the album, with the entirety of Butchers Blind serving as the backing band. The album was recorded and mixed

in a remote East Hampton cottage by Mick Hargreaves via his Lantern Sound Recording Rig. Hargreaves looked to capture the band over the course of several weekend sessions, with many of the tracks being recorded as live takes, and all those involved using the cottage as both a recording space and clubhouse. The end result is a record that doesn’t stray from Bryan’s singer/songwriter sensibilities all while packing on some true rock & roll. The Party Guest is a defining statement that encompasses several genres and shows promise for this up-and-coming singer/songwriter.” To Learn More About The Artist: Catch Bryan Gallo live at Sage Café in Blue Point on November 1, and at The Clovis Point Winery on November 8. The official album release show for The Party Guest, with Butchers Blind and Chris J. Connolly also performing, is October 23 at The Patchogue Theater. To keep up with Gallo, check out his social media contacts: bryangallo.com; Facebook.com/ bryangallomuzak; Twitter.com/bryangallo; and Instagram.com/bryangallomuzak.

Jazz & Blues Tasting Some Sweet Notes: Stony Brook’s Harmony Vineyards has opened the doors to a new music venue, Ray Anderson’s Tasting Notes Jazz Club at Harmony Vineyards. Jazz can now be heard at the Yineyards four nights a week during the fall and winter months. Anderson, an internationally renowned trombone virtuoso who has made 20 albums as as leader and recorded with a who’s who of jazz greats, will lead duos and trios four days a week, abetted by his longtime musical partner guitarist Steve Salerno. In the time-honored jazz tradition of proving your skills on the bandstand, Saturday and Sunday afternoons will be reserved for seasoning promising young talent, when Anderson is joined by young protégés, many of whom will come from Stony Brook University’s Jazz Department, where Anderson serves as Director. Ray Anderson’s Tasting Notes Jazz Club at Harmony Vineyards has its home in the cozy library of the vineyard’s 1690-era Tasting House. The club will function year-round, with performances every Thursday and Friday night from 8 to 10 pm and each Saturday and Sunday afternoon (hours TBA). There is a two-drink minimum, and the vineyard will serve its own renowned wines, a selection of award-winning beers and microbrews, and small plates. Harmony Vineyards and its Tasting Room are located at 169 Harbor Road in Head of the Harbor, New York. “People who love music know that there is no substitute for live performance. When you hear music performed ‘live,’ you are part of it, your energy inspires the performance, and the musicians are playing to you,” said Anderson. “The opening of Tasting Notes Jazz Club at Harmony Vineyards presents a rare opportunity for Long Islanders to hear jazz in all its romantic expressive exuberance on a regular basis. I’m wildly excited, and most grateful, for this wonderful venue at Harmony Vineyard. THEATER

Theater Steals & Deals And I And Silence The Wayside Motor Inn Pershing Square Signature Theatre Love Letters Brooks Atkinson Theatre

“Be adventurous in your theater-going” is the mantra of one of the many theater-papering services. And with so many ways to find cheap or less-thanlist-price tickets, there is nothing keeping you from enjoying some great theater. Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, “Mad Men’s” Vincent Kartheiser, Rose Byrne, and Michael Cera are making their New York or Broadway debuts, while stars Hugh Jackman, James Earl Jones, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, and Rosemary Harris return to the stage in what promises to be an exciting season of new plays and starry revivals. Except for the mega hits, you don’t have to pay list price to see great theater. For an annual membership fee (about $100), you can get free tickets (with about a $4 per ticket fee) especially for previews from Theatermania’s Gold Club (goldclub.theatermania.com), Audience Extras (audienceextras.com), Play By Play (play-byplay.com), or Theater Extras (theaterextras.com). If you are a student, civil servant, senior citizen, non-profit worker, arts professional, or in the clergy or military, you can join the Theatre Development Fund (tdf.org) to buy deeply-discounted tickets to Broadway, off-Broadway, concert and special events. TDF also runs the three TKTS booths with day-ofperformance half-price tickets (tkts.today.com).

Playbill.com lists the shows that offer deeply discounted same-day rush and student tickets. Tickets to all the Signature Theater Company productions are $25, unless a show extends. This season opened with Naomi Wallace’s gripping two-character (four actress) play And I And Silence, about the intense friendship that develops in a Southern prison in 1950 between two incarcerated 17-year-old girls, Dee, an illiterate white girl and Jamie a young black girl with plans for her future. The play interweaves

Love Letters

scenes of their growing prison friendship with the anticipation and depressing disappointment of their lives together when they’re released in 1959 as their attempts to find jobs as maids and boyfriends fail. Each woman is played by two actresses (who bear no resemblance to each other but give impassioned and at times heartbreaking performances) – the prison Jamie and Dee by Trae Harris and Emily Skeggs, and the older Jamie and Dee by Rachel Nicks and Samantha Soule. While And I And Silence builds to a shattering climax, the characters in the Signature’s production of

A.R. Guerney’s 1977 play The Wayside Motor Inn often live lives of quiet desperation and missed communication. Five sets of travelers all staying at a motel outside of Boston bring the baggage of their lives with them – an ill husband (Jon DeVries) who can no longer bear his wife’s (the moving Lizbeth MacKay) fussing; a status-conscious father (the superlative Marc Kudisch) pressuring his son to go to Harvard; young lovers exploring their boundaries of their relationship; and a divorced couple finding common ground. The gimmick here is that the stories all take place and overlap in the same dreary, generic motel room. Under Lila Neugebauer’s seamless direction, the ensemble cast illuminates the loneliness and the comfort found within relationships. Love Letters, A.R. Guerney’s 1989 venerable warhorse of regional, dinner and amateur theater is also a stunt play – a two-hander staged reading for an actress and actor of any age who sit behind a table and read from a script the letters written by two uppercrust WASP friends over 50 years from second grade to their mid-50s. For the Broadway revival some pretty nifty couples have been enlisted to play Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III: Carol Burnett and Brian Dennehy, Candace Bergen and Alan Alda, Diana Rigg and Stacy Keach, Anjelica Huston and Martin Sheen – but I cannot imagine anyone playing the restless, flighty and increasingly desperate Melissa with more poignant artistry than the sublime Mia Farrow who, by subtle vocal inflections and gestures, conjures up the charming child, the unhappy teen dealing with her parents’ divorce, the young artist abroad and the disappointed and alcoholic wife and mother. Under Gregory Mosher’s elegant direction, Dennehy is wonderful as the stable and stolid ballast to her restless soul. – Jane Klain

Have A Merry Menzel: Idina’s Holiday Album

The Tony Award-winning singer and actor Idina Menzel – a former Long Island resident and a favorite here – has released a Christmas album, Holiday Wishes, on Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by Grammy Award-winner Walter Afanasieff and features such favorites as "A Holly Jolly Christmas" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little M," as well as Joni Mitchell's Christmasthemed "River," one of Menzel's favorites. There's no question that Menzel is on the type of hot streak that most performers can only dream about; her career has traversed stage, film, television, and music. She was heard as Elsa in Disney's global box office smash Frozen, in which she sings the film's Oscar-winning song "Let It Go." After Menzel's performance of the multi-platinum song at the 86th annual Academy Awards, she made history as the first person with both a Billboard Top 10 hit and a Tony Award for acting. Menzel can currently be seen on Broadway as Elizabeth in If/Then, for which she earned critical acclaim and her third Tony nomination, and performed "Always Starting Over" from the musical at this year's Tony Awards. Victoria’s Secret Back On CBS

Angels From All Angles:

Returning just in time for holiday gift-giving (and to enrage blue noses nationwide), “The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show” will return to CBS on Tuesday, December 9. This year, the show will be filmed in London for the first time. Cancels NYC

Yusuf/Cat Stevens: The artist now known as Yusuf/ Cat Stevens will release an album on October 27, Tell 'Em I'm Gone, and he's about to tour to support it … everywhere but here, it appears. Recorded across the globe, the album features 10 new studio recordings including five original tracks and five covers. The effort features musical contributions from Richard Thompson, blues harmonica player Charlie

Musselwhite, guitarist Matt Sweeney, and others. The album was produced by Yusuf and Rick Rubin and was mixed by Yusuf and Paul SamwellSmith. Also announced was Yusuf/Cat Stevens’ first North American tour in over 35 years, but the artist cancelled his New York stop at The Beacon Theatre because of how tickets are sold. "Unfortunately I will not be performing in NYC this time around, but I am looking forward to playing for fans in Philadelphia on December 4 and hope to return to NYC at a future date,” wrote Yusuf on his website (yusufislam.com). “My fans will understand and I thank them for informing me about the extortionate ticket prices already being listed on some websites. I have been a longtime supporter of paperless tickets to my shows worldwide and avoiding scalpers. Unfortunately, NY has a state law that requires all tickets sold for shows in NYC to be paper, enabling them to be bought and sold at inflated prices. I'm sorry about not being able to now play in NYC but hope to find an opportunity that aligns with my support of this issue in the near future, God willing. Looks like the Peace Train is going to arrive at New York a little bit later than expected.”

RHYTHM TRACKING Fame Blame Game: The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame once again seems to be getting ready to induct a parade of lowlife grunge 90s critters while continuing to overlook the giants that they pretend never existed. For instance, The New York Dolls are once

Mott The Hoople

again not even nominated; I guess when Johnny Thunders upset Sire Records maven, Seymour Stein, it must have really stuck. Stein is a major player at the Hall, alongside Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner, who treated The Dolls like they were the Ebola virus back when they were new on the scene. The funny part is that The Ramones and The Sex Pistols are both inducted into the Hall, and neither of those bands would have even existed, by their own admissions, if not for The Dolls – punk rock as we know it might not have existed if not for The Dolls. Then there are U.K. giants T.Rex and Mott The Hoople; do we even hear these names mentioned as possible contenders to be included in the Hall? Of course not; glam and glitter were avoided at all costs by the gatekeepers when it was ruling scenes everywhere on the planet except America, so the powers that be still want to keep those heads underwater. However, it’s good to know that Motown legends The Marvelettes are once again nominated (for what seems like the hundredth time) for inclusion; the groundbreaking girl group gave Motown Records its first ever national #1 Billboard Hot 100 single, an historic breakthrough for the first black-owned and operated record label in American pop music. The record, as you well know, was "Please Mr. Postman" in 1963. The Beatles, of course, did a cover version of "Postman" quickly, tipping their hats to Berry Gordy's label in the process. Will The Marvelettes actually make it in this time?

By Jimi LaLumia

I'll believe it when I see it; they were also omitted (except for a brief glance) from the 1984 NBC TV special, "Motown 25," which was a ratings monster when it first aired – and which is now finally available on DVD, as a single disc, a three-disc set, or an elaborate six-disc set with a book and other goodies along for the ride. This was the show where Michael Jackson had reunited with his brothers, all of whom (except Jermaine) had split from Motown and signed with Epic/CBS; it was on this show that Michael first performed "Billie Jean" and made everyone crazy with his moonwalk. It was also on this show that The Temptations and The Four Tops “battled” each other in a stunning duel of hits, the success of which led both groups to tour together for three decades, something they'd never even though about before. “Motown 25” was also one of Marvin Gaye's last performances;, there's Smokey Robinson dueting with Linda Ronstadt; Adam Ant (who had hurt his ankle but performed anyway) did a quirky version of "Where Did Our Love Go" by Diana Ross & The Supremes – and got upstaged by Ross herself, who ran out onto the stage unexpectedly and completely threw him off. It's a Motown mountain of memories, and it is well worth owning. RIP Paul Revere: We wish a fond farewell and rest in peace to Paul Revere, the leader and keyboard player for Paul Revere & The Raiders, a 1960s garage rock band that held its own during the “British Invasion” years with a string of fabulous hits, including "Kicks," "Hungry," and "Just Like Me" before The Monkees came along and stole the show. The Raiders’ version of "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" has never been topped by any of the versions that followed. 16 Magazine forever; God bless Gloria Stavers. Paul Revere & The Raiders

B

ridgit Mendler, with special guests The Nick Tangorra Band, will headline on Wednesday, October 29 at 7 pm at The Parmount in Huntington. For tickets and information, log on to paramountny.com. An actress and singer, Bridgit Mendler is one of Hollywood’s brightest young rising stars who titled her Hollywood Records debut album thusly: Hello, My Name is... – but the world has had no problem filling in the blank. Between the album’s platinum-certified single, “Ready Or Not,” and her high profile as the star of The Disney Channel original series “Good Luck Charlie,” Mendler has already shown she’s on an unstoppable drive for success. As an actress,

songwriter, singer, and performer, this is a young star who can seemingly do it all. Born in Washington, D.C., Mendler moved to the Northern California town of Mill Valley when she was eight years old. By the time she began middle school, she had started acting, first in local productions and, later, in Los Angeles, where the young teen headed to pursue a career. She landed early roles in soap operas and films before Disney discovered her, giving her guest roles on the shows “Jonas” and “Wizards Of Waverly Place.” Her big break came when she was cast as Teddy in the series “Good Luck Charlie,” which debuted on the Disney Channel in 2010. Her role as the protective big sister of baby Charlie catapulted Bridgit to stardom in the Disney world and

beyond. She juggled work on the series with lead roles in “Lemonade Mouth,” guest-starring roles on programs such as “House,” and voicing the title character in the hit Walt Disney Pictures animated film, The Secret World Of Arrietty. None of that distracted Mendler from her core love of music. She kept a guitar close by at all times, and wrote a song a day as a way of keeping herself focused. With the release of Hello My Name Is... in October 2012, Mendler was off and running as a recording artist. It debuted Top 30 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and # 1 on iTunes’ pop album chart. “Ready Or Not” turned gold within weeks, and has

achieved platinum certification in the USA. Her follow-up single, “Hurricane,” was soon certified gold as well. This born musician has one overriding goal for her life now, and that’s musical success. With her gifts of songwriting and singing, she seems certain to reach her goal. In fact, with the immediate success of Hello My Name Is..., she’s already there. “The music really has me in it,” Mendler said of her album. “I once was told that listening to a good song is like coming home to a place you’ve never been. Music has the ability to impact people in such a strong way. It’s such an important job, and for me it’s the most gratifying thing.”
