Exorcist Night:
The Antidote To Christmas Yuck
If you're sick of candy canes, flying reindeer and all the faux holiday schmaltz that you've been unwillingly subjected to, we have a legit antidote: Two genuinely terrifying classic horror films, The Exorcist and The Exorcist II: The Heretic, will be part of a late-night double feature on Saturday, December 20 at 10:30 pm at Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington. Tickets can be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org, at the box office during theater hours, or by calling Brown Paper Tickets at (800) 838-3006. The original Exorcist film became a national sensation upon its release in 1973 and launched Linda Blair as both a major star and later a sex symbol for almost a decade. The follow-up, Exorcist II, wasn't quite the rage, but delivers its share of chills. Both of these shockers are a perfect answer to Lorrie Morgan's vomit-inducing “Up On Santa Claus Mountain” and all the other insipid ditties we can't get away from this time of year. – Bob Smith

Gift & Travel Ideas For the Holiday Season
It’s that time of year again when we look for some great items to give at this holiday season. Good Times has traveled the world(or at least NYC) to uncover these treasures. Enjoy, and send pix!

2015 New York Mets Tickets: With the Jets & Giants pretty much a non event, our thoughts turn to baseball. There’s only 176 days(or something like that) until the season starts, and
what’s a better way to think spring than with Mets tickets? The Mets are blessed with an abundance of pitching, looks like they’re going to make some interesting moves on the field, and their prospects for the playoffs are bright. How about we think less about championships, and more about just enjoying a good old ballgame? The Mets are back in 2015 with many weekend promotions including free tee shirt Fridays, Saturday concerts and fireworks, and Family Sundays. Tickets can be purchased at Mets.com/Tickets and at 718-507-tixx. Tickets start at only $11, less than a couple of Shack burgers.
Guitar Shop Tees: Speaking of tees as we were, Eric Feldman has come up with a great idea. You know how you see people wearing Hard Rock Buenos Aires shirts, and you know they’ve never been south of Brooklyn? Now you can wear tees from the great guitar shops of the world and can save on the airfare. Guitar shop tees is a online subscription t-shirt club that offers a different tee each month. Joining the club is only $22 a month, which includes shipping and handling. Visit guitarshoptees.com to suit up.
The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis: Hey good buddy, looking for a groovy, far out and solid experience? Then you’re going to want to score this ultimate collection of all 36 episodes of Dobie Gillis. At the same time, you might want to grab a copy of The Only Folk Collection You’ll Ever Need, an eclectic collection of traditional and classic American folk music.
High Notes: Richard Loren worked as Jerry Garcia’s personal manager, and also represented the Doors and Jefferson Airplane. Loren’s new book, High Notes, offers an incredible behind the scene look at the seminal San Francisco bands and the scene that evolved into a worldwide phenomena. He also initiated many new concepts in the music business, including screenings of the Grateful Dead film in concert halls. A fascinating look at a time that was without equal. Available at all bookstores Have great holidays this year, everyone!

t’s easily the biggest news in the pop music world: Taylor Swift announced “The 1989 World Tour” days after performing a concert in Times Square to more than 20,000 fans, wrapping up promotion of her history-making fifth studio album, 1989. The huge AEGpromoted tour kicks off on May 20, 2015 in Louisiana. Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy will be main support along the North American tour while singer, songwriter and viral sensation Shawn Mendes will support the global superstar along her North American stadium dates. The 1989 World Tour will encompass eight countries and span four continents including North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. General ticketing and on-sale information is available at TaylorSwift.com. Last year, the North American portion of Taylor's sold-out “The Red Tour” played to more than 1.36 million fans over 66 shows (including 13

stadium stops) in 47 cities in 29 states. Also in 2013, Taylor took “The Red Tour” down under – performing sold out stadium shows in Australia (as well as arena dates in New Zealand), becoming the first solo female artist in 20 years to undertake a national stadium concert tour of Australia. In addition, “The Red Tour” visited Europe for six sold-out shows during this year. Swift, who writes all of her own songs, is clearly a global superstar, a seven-time Grammy
winner, and the youngest winner in history of the music industry's highest honor, the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Taylor is the only artist in music history to have an album (2010's Speak Now, 2012's Red, and 2014's 1989) hit the one million plus first-week sales figure three times. She is the first artist since The Beatles (and the only female artist in history) to log six or more weeks at #1 in the U.S. with three consecutive studio albums. Taylor has an album on Rolling Stone's prestigious The 50 Greatest Albums of All
Time (by women) list; Time magazine has named her one the of the “100 Most Influential People” in the world, and she is Billboard's youngest-ever Woman of the Year, as well as the only artist to have been awarded this honor twice. Taylor has career record sales in excess of 30 million albums and almost 80 million song downloads worldwide, and has had singles top both the pop and country radio charts around the globe. Taylor's album Red (Big Machine Records), released two years ago, sold more than 1.2 million copies in the U.S. in its first week, scoring the highest first-week sales debut of any album in over a decade. "Shake It Off." the first single off her fifth studio album 1989, topped Billboard's Pop, Hot AC and Hot 100 charts and has earned double platinum-status by the RIAA for exceeding sales of two million downloads in the U.S., and has peaked at #1 in 64 countries on iTunes. 1989 topped iTunes' sales charts in 95 countries on its release and was the highest selling first week release of 2014. The tour’s most local stop will be July 11 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy proved himself a breakout artist of 2014 with the song "Riptide" from his debut album Dream Your Life Away. After spending five weeks in the #1 spot at alternative radio, the song is now making its way up the Billboard Hot 100. For more information, visitvancejoy.com. Shawn Mendes has emerged from teen viral sensation to major best-selling status almost overnight.

he New York Mets never tinkered with the dimensions of Shea Stadium during its entire 44-year existence, but for the third time in the sixyear history of Citi Field, the team is bringing in the outfield walls. This time, the right field fences are being moved 10’ closer to home plate. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson figures that the move will be a net gain for the Mets in that mediocre opposing pitchers have unfairly benefitted from cavernous Citi Field at the expense of Mets hitters. He also thinks that the superior Met pitching will be able to hold hitters at bay, even in a bandbox. The Mets would not give me a cost for the cumulative modifications that they have made to Citi Field, but a team spokesman told me that it wasn’t very expensive. Perhaps they are funding it from the savings of not having introductory press conference luncheons for the free agents that they have signed of late; last year, they flew Curtis Granderson into Orlando to meet with writers during the 2013 winter meetings, and a few weeks ago they had Michael Cuddyer only speak with the team’s beat writers, who were attending the general managers meeting in Phoenix, via a conference call. Jeter, who has a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster (Gallery Books is an S&S imprint), allowed photographer Christopher Anderson unfettered access, while the former player provides the narrative. Al Michaels has never been one of my favorite sportscasters, but I have to admit that I enjoyed reading his memoir, tYou Can’t Make This Up (Wm. Morrow Publishing). As expected, he recounts the 1980 Winter Olympics, where his career was made when he uttered his signature call (“Do you believe in miracles!”) when the U.S. hockey men’s defeated the Soviet Union, 4-3, in one of the greatest upsets in sports history. As anyone who has followed ABC Sports would expect, there is a chapter devoted to Howard Cosell. The most fascinating chapter, however, is when Michaels recalls his friendship with O.J. Simpson, and how that put him in an uncomfortable position with ABC 20 years ago. On a more humorous note, he talks about how film studios tried to rip him off when he played himself in the movies Jerry Maguire and BASEketball. The one disappointment

mention in the New York Post’s legendary gossip home, Page Six, two weeks ago, when it was reported that star players John Taveras and Kyle Okposo were buying presents for underprivileged kids at the Toys R Us in Westbury. In another nice touch, the Isles, who are in their final season at Nassau Coliseum, are letting some of the greatest players in their history such as Billy Smith and Denis Potivin take curtain calls before certain games. It’s easy to get the feeling that tension is building between Brooklyn Nets head coach Lionel Hollins and his team. Hollins has not been shy about calling out his team at his pre and post-game press conferences. He has been particularly
vociferous about rebounding-challenged center Brook Lopez’s shortcomings. The Nets brought in Cardozo High alum Nigel Sylvester to entertain needy kids at a holiday function held at the Barclays Center, where each child received a bicycle. Sylvester is to bicycles what the late Evel Knievel was to motorcycles and what Tony Hawk and Shaun White are to skateboards. It’s not a pretty picture for the New York Knicks when Carmelo Anthony is not in the lineup. Carmelo missed a couple of games with back spasms before returning and looking like his old self against the Miami Heat, as he scored 31 points. Knicks head coach Derek Fisher had better hope that Anthony’s back problems don’t become a chronic problem. Madison Square Garden is borrowing a page from the Yankees’ HOPE Week that was started by media relations director Jason Zillo (and now in its seventh year), and MSG has quickly become the gold standard in sports team-community service events: Garden of Dreams is MSG’s charitable arm, and its mission is to enrich the lives of disadvantaged kids. The first week of December become the inaugural “Garden of Dreams” week, where kids got to have a different memorable experience every day, such as entertaining the crowds at Knicks and Rangers games and catching a performance of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.” Former Giants linebacker and current radio analyst Carl Banks is also a clothing entrepreneur. apparel company relaunched the Starter line of satin jackets, and it just signed a licensing deal with the Big East Conference, one of whose members is the St. John’s Red Storm. Starter jackets are great to wear when bike riding or jogging in cold weather. Another winter option that isn’t too bulky are PACT’s organic cotton hoodie sweatshirts. Respiration gets a lot tougher in the winter chill, and if you can’t inhale and exhale oxygen properly, it’s musch harder to stay in shape. A new spa chain, Breathe Easy, has opened in the New York area and its raison d’etre is to promote salt therapy as a way of opening up nasal passages. New York Jets running back Chris Ivory and former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber are clients. It makes sense, because a lot of us breathe a lot better at the beach than at almost any other place, and it undoubtedly has to do with the salty air that acts as a natural decongestant. Breathe Easy personnel claim that breathing in salty air reduces snoring. Keep that in mind if your significant other is complaining!

The Benjamins
The Nutty Irishman, Farmingdale December 28 at 11:30 PM (516) 293-9700 thenuttyirishman.com Sure, there are hundreds of cover bands – there's one rehearsing in the garage next door right now – but few of them have established themselves as touring acts in their own right. New Jersey's The Benjamins is constantly on the road, bringing audience their unique mix of sounds and styles. It's a high-energy act featruing cover songs from every genre and era, with a focus on current and popular tunes – basically, if you know it, The Benjamins can play it.

K.J. Farrell's, Bellmore December 18 at 10 PM kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925
This always-working unit refers to itself as “The Ultimate 80s Experience,” and the set lists belie that stone fact: Expect a blast from the past with songs by virtually everyone of that hit-filled decade from Joan Jett to Twisted Sister with a little of virtually everyone else in between. Decadia covers all the bases, from hard rock to pop to New Wave to MTV hits to dance favorites. A.R.T. gets the music started for the evening at 7 pm at K.J. Farrell’s.

Mulcahy's Pub, Wantagh • muls.com December 19 at 9 PM • (516) 783-7500
This beautiful star was already a force on TV – “One Tree Hill,” “Friday Night Lights,” and more shows than we can list here – but her first love is country music. Of late, she's been rising up the country charts with “Love,” her latest single, proving she's on the verge of very big things. Who else thinks so? Superstar Miranda Lambert, who, according to Kramer, has encouraged her to pursue music to the fullest. Kramer definitely has – her upcoming album will feature a duet with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. Southbound performs at 7 pm.

Get The Led Out: The American Led Zeppelin The Paramount, Huntington December 26 at 8 PM paramountny.com (631) 673-7300
They’re getting to be real Long Island favorites, which is a natural given the vast number of classic rock fans in these parts: Get The Led Out is a group of professional musicians who are passionate about their love of the music of Led Zeppelin. It's been their mission to bring the studio recordings of "the mighty Zep" to life on the big concert stage. This is not an impersonator act, but rather a group of musicians who were fans first, striving to do justice to their music heroes. 14 • Good Times Magazine - December 16 - 29, 2014

Very few stars, so take advantage of this rare opportunity to see the gifted Caputo do what she does best.

New Year's Eve Yuks: It was a banner year for the touring troupe of loonies known as Long Island Comedy – and they'll be the focal point of not one but three special holiday shows on New Year's Eve (December 31). Long Island Comedy will bring Bill McCarty, Richie Byrne, and special guests for two shows at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson; two more shows featuring the red-hot Maria Walsh, Frankie Pace, and Stevie G.B. at The Madison Theatre at Molloy Collge in Rockville Centre; and an 8 pm show at Suffolk Theater in Riverhead featuring Sherry Davies, J. Jay Boyd, and Tom Daddario. Tickets, info, and lots more mirth can be found via licomedy.com. International Laughs: The book charts, usually dominated by J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, or Dan Brown, have been shaken up by a surprise new hit: Forever England is the latest comedy novel from English humorist David Luddington, and it's already landed in the top 25 of not just one but three of Amazon.com's best-seller charts. This is an event that seems to have caught most book pundits by surprise. Amazon sold most of their initial stock of the paperback on the first day of the launch, and had to immediately order further copies. Luddington has found himself suddenly thrust into the limelight, a bit of a change from his usual reclusive way of life in the Alpujarras of Southern Spain. The book paints a comedic contrast between the two vastly different worlds of the British expat in Spain. Most people are familiar with the classic image of the retired Brits on the Spanish Costas with their endless quests for real English bacon and a proper cup of tea. But another Spain exists, and this is the rural and pastoral Spain presented by bestselling author
Chris Stewart in the Driving Over Lemons series. Luddington has brought these two worlds together in a culture clash comedy that recalls the gentle humour of the likes of Wodehouse, Douglas Adams, or the Ealing Comedies. "Comedy is usually regarded as the 'Poor Relation' in the world of books," said Luddington. "Even the greats of the genre like Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchet struggle against the Twilight clones and numerous Shades Of Grey."
Asked why he thought the book has been so well received, Tony Ryan for Mirador Publishing said, "David creates comedy with a very positive feel. He avoids the biting, cruel humor that has been so prevalent over the last decade, and gives us warm characters we care for." Forever England is available now in bookshops and online stores, both as a paperback and eBook in all popular formats. For more on David Luddington: luddington.com.

Jazz & Blues Hiatt's Heights: Forty years into his recording career, John Hiatt has chosen to title his 22nd studio album Terms Of My Surrender. Surrender? Is that as in Cheap Trick? Or Appomattox? Hiatt laughs, tentatively, at the choice. “It’s my Appomattox,” he says, wryly. “Really I don’t know where it came from, that idea of trying to arrange the terms of my surrender. I don’t get to do that. It’s a labor in vain in that respect, if you think you can negotiate that with anyone, or anything. In reference to the title song, it’s in terms of love. You’ve got to give it up. The song says, ‘I can’t

front and see.’” They settled into his cozy studio, a “funky little place in East Nashville” as Hiatt describes it, for a set of unfussy, highly of-the-moment sessions, many of them essentially done in one basic take. Hiatt had in mind playing some rough-edged electric guitar for the core sound, but the producer thought acoustic would be a better fit for the songs. “I agreed,” Hiatt says. “And we ran it through the amp and it became the sound of the record — my voice and my guitar and that was the thing. You know, my singing, I’ve dropped down to

negotiate the terms.’” That’s an essence, perhaps the essence, of the 11 songs here, the 11 stories they tell and, together perhaps, one story. Always a keen observer of life’s flings and foibles alike, usually mixed well together, Hiatt’s insights and skills at sharing them have only sharpened over the years. With his longtime guitarist Doug Lancio taking the producer reins, Hiatt set out to bring the songs’ character (and characters) into intimate focus. There’s a close-up, patinafestooned bluesy quality tying the tales together. But it’s blues in the knotty backwoods sense, as if sprung from the Delta loam. It’s completely a band effort, his current group, which he calls simply The Combo, a tight-yet-loose unit from years together on the road — Lancio on guitars, banjo and mandolin, Nathan Gehri on bass, Kenneth Blevins on drums, with keyboards from John Coleman on some of the tracks. But it all flows from the leader. “I had this group of songs and wanted to feature my guitar and voice — oddly enough,” said Hiatt. “However peculiar it might be, I thought, ‘Let’s put it out
a lower register. I’ve for a long time sung from the middle to the top, and this is kind of down from there. It seemed to work, fit the songs, fit the feel. And it’s easier to sing them, oddly enough.” He pauses a second. “Plus I’m 61 and I don’t have that top range any more.” Another pause, before the zinger. “I don’t have the top of anything.” He’s not complaining, mind you. “Doesn’t bother me,” he says of his age. “Shit falls apart and I can’t remember anything, all that stuff. But the plusses outweigh the minuses for sure.” That right there is a strong thread running through the album. The tales aren’t autobiographical, he stresses. But they are still, in many regards, his. “It’s more stories, storytelling, from different perspectives,” he says. But he allows, “I guess from a point of view. I guess it’s mine, if youwant to put it that way, at a given time. It changes.” The new album, riding on many blues and Americana charts at present, is available everywhere music is sold. Who: Wake The Sun is a Long Island-based rock act that formed this past spring. Band members include Dillon Mealey (vocals), Tom Tom (guitars), Jon Brick (drums), Dillon Mealey (bass), and John Creighton (keyboards, backup vocals). The group recently made national headlines as it signed with Martin Artist Management, an independent boutique management firm founded by music industry veteran R. Wayne Martin; the first signees for Martin are Wake The Sun and U.K. singer/songwriter James Edgar. The firm will represent clients in all aspects of their careers, including artist development, fan base cultivation and growth, and the exploitation of intellectual properties – all the while establishing and cultivating the relationships required in today’s music market. “I have always had the specific goal of becoming an artist manager, so I’ve spent my entire career moving toward this moment. My work inside the major labels and indie labels as well as my career inside music publishing and as an industry consultant – it’s all been research and preparation for this lifelong objective,” said Martin. “Now, I’m ready to take a handful of new and developing artists to school and use my insight and connections to propel them forward. Wake The Sun and James Edgar both have what it takes to be incredibly successful, and I’m looking forward to working with both to make that a reality.” “As a very new band, we’re incredibly excited to already be preparing to head out on our first national tour,” said Jon Brick, drummer for Wake The Sun. “It’s amazing to have someone like Wayne in our corner as we use this tour to launch our career. Even though we just signed our contract with him, he’s been by our side since the very beginning, and he’s been helpful in so many ways already. We’re really looking forward to making this partnership a win for everyone involved.” Wake The Sun counts Howlin’ Wolf, The Rolling Signing With Martin Stones, Foo Artist Management Fighters, Kings Of Leon, Gary Clark Jr., and The Black Keys as influences. This year, they performed as a main stage artist at Michele Clark’s Sunset Sessions Rock in Carlsbad, California, and were an official band selection for the CBGB Music and Film Festival in New York City. Wake The Sun is writing, recording, and rehearsing to support its first national tour, which kicks off February 4, 2015 and will hit 35 markets. Their first track, “Wicked Souls,”is already available to stream via Facebook and SoundCloud. To Learn More About The Band: Find the band at Facebook, Twitter, and SoundCloud.

Poet Billy Lamont: A Record-Breaking Feat
Babylon-based poet and recording artist Poet Billy Lamont seems to have made the record books: One of his newest collaborations has, according to the artist, Poet Billy Lamont & Mike Peters made The Guinness Book of World Records for “Longest Officially Released Song Of All Time.” Lamont collaborated on Mike Peters' (The Alarm) newly released song “The Scriptures,” which clocks in at one hour, 43 minutes, and 40 seconds, which apparently was enough to make the song a record-breaker. "Mike Peters' new recording entitled The Scriptures is like a prayer for peace in the Holy Land and is an outgrowth of his Love Hope Strength's organization work helping Muslim, Christian, and Jew fight cancer and saving lives in the Holy Land, and I support this work with all my strength,” said Lamont. “The Scriptures is an all-inclusive project that includes everyday artists as well as …. members of The Alarm, Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros, The Cult, Gene Loves Jezebel, Sisters Of Mercy, Mission UK, Generation X, and Spandau Ballet as well as myself." Horrible Bosses 2
Starring Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx Directed by Sean Anders Warner Bros.
The 2011 comedy Horrible Bosses was not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but it found an audience because of a simple yet underutilized storyline: A lot of workers have bosses who are either unappreciative or are bullies. The only film of recent vintage where this device was a central theme was the 1980 Dolly Parton vehicle, 9 To 5. Whereas that movies was a smart comedy, Horrible Bosses was pure slapstick, where three buddies who are being humiliated at work plot to kill their respective bosses. It was clearly more Three Stooges than it was “The Sopranos.” Now, Nick (Bateman), Kurt (Sudeikis), and Dale (Day) are back with another caper: The guys have developed a product called “Shower Buddy,” and are looking to be entrepreneurs instead of employees. An appearance on a morning TV show draws the attention of a major appliance distributor, who offers them a deal that sounds too good to be true – and it is; Bert (Christoph Waltz) and Rex Hanson (Chris Pine) snooker the guys by using a bridge loan to legally steal their product right out from under them. The guys are down, but not out: They come up with the idea of kidnaping the odiously spoiled Rex, who flaunts his wealth in the faces of everyone he meets, in exchange for a princely

ransom from his father. Predictably, “Murphy’s Law” kicks in and everything that can go wrong does; one unforeseen complication is that Rex has his own reasons to extract money from his dad and winds up commandeering things from the trio of dopes. This sequel isn’t horrible, but the filmmakers are lazy. Jokes run on far too long, such as one about gay oral sex in the first scene, as well as the

obligatory finale chase scenes through the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Director Sean Anders, who doubles as a screenwriter, lets his cast have fun by allowing them to ad-lib to their heart’s content. In that light, the best thing about the film is its talented and game cast. Bateman once again plays a straight arrow constantly doing a slow burn while being the voice of reason. Sudeikis, as was often the case during his “Saturday Night Live” years, plays a clueless but confident and upbeat character. The only weak lead is Day, a poor man’s Bobcat Goldthwait playing the “Nervous Nellie” here. The supporting cast is even better than the leads; Kevin Spacey returns in a cameo as the ultimate emasculating boss who makes Alec Baldwin’s tough guy character from “Glengarry Glen Ross” look like a wimp in comparison, and Chris Pine delivers as a handsome sociopath. Jennifer Aniston once again steals the film as a sex-obsessed dentist whose salty language about her proclivities would make a longshoreman blush. This is a harmless film that clocks in under two hours, but wait until it comes out on DVD or when it makes it to premium cable or streaming services, as it’s not worthy of movie theater ticket prices. – Lloyd Carroll

RHYTHM TRACKING
The Real #1: Bono has been injured, but he's recovering, while Rolling Stone has named the recent given-away-by-Apple album by U2 as the #1 album of 2014. Really? No one bought it, radio isn't playing it, no one can name a single song from it (okay, there's something on there about Joey Ramone.) ... but do they think that anyone is going to take this seriously, or that anyone even cares? Rhythm Tracking hereby declares the #1 album of 2014 to be the fabulous soundtrack album for Guardians Of The Galaxy, which has actually gone gold and is loaded with great, classic 70s hits that made the film all the more enjoyable. The runner-up for best album is the soundtrack to Looking For Johnny, more rock & roll than your heart can handle from the crown prince of the art form, Mr. Johnny Thunders. Buy the DVD (it was recently in the Top 10 on Billboard's national Music DVDs chart), and grab the limited edition, double record, red vinyl release while you still can (it hit the streets on Record Store Day). UK’s Okay: The UK Top 40 has always been so much more interesting than the U.S. version, and the tradition continues: A new version of "Do They Know It's Christmas," designed to raise funds to battle the Ebola virus, is a huge hit over there, spearheaded by the participation of One Direction, who remain pop megastars on both sides of the ocean. Of course, punk era survivor Bob Geldorf continues to steer the ship. I'm amazed that this is not getting airplay over here, Bing but hey, we also ignored Crosby great glam and punk

singles in the 70s that topped the Brit hit parade, so it's no real surprise. As with the original, the ensemble of artists on the track are tagged under the name Band Aid. A Worthy Hit: As I sat in the theater during the new Hunger Games: MockingJay film, being the big softie that I am, a tear crept into the corner of my eye when Jennifer Lawrence (love her!) sang "The Hanging Tree" a capella, a tune that became a rallying cry for the film's “revolution.” In the 1970s, this type of thing would be a “left field” hit for Top 40 radio. Which brings us back to my earlier point: Within days, the song sprang onto the charts in the UK (love them!). Since that time, it has bolted to a #12 debut on the iTunes singles chart over here, but as of this writing I'm not hearing it on WBLI or Z100. C'mon, folks – hit radio used to be interesting and open to the everyso-often out of the ordinary track, and this is from the biggest movie in the world right now. Get with the program; the “format” is tired and old, so move on. Bing’s The Thing: PBS recently screened a two-hour “American Masters” documentary on Bing Crosby. The program really shows the birth of the music biz, as Crosby ushered in the age of millionselling pop idols; he sold more records combined than anyone ever has. He and his music were never my cup of tea (I was a 1960s teen), but I must give props to the diva antics and drunken rock star-style stunts that he invented. Catch this in reruns or on the PBS website.

Boob Tube Books: New books about the world of television are hitting book stores: Live From New York by James Andrew Miller & Tom Shales (Little, Brown): “Saturday Night Live” debuted on October 11, 1975 with George Carlin as the host. It’s not hyperbole to state that “SNL” revolutionized television, and despite numerous ups and downs, it has become a cultural institution as it is now in its 40th season. Politicians are routinely satirized by its cast and writers, but nowadays a “Saturday Night Live” appearance is almost obligatory for presidential candidates. Sarah Palin would have faded into obscurity had it not been for Tina Fey’s wickedly funny impression of her. Live From New York is an oral history of “SNL,” and it’s a tribute to authors James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales that they were able to gather testimony from many cast members, many former hosts and musical guests, and NBC executives. The first printing of “Live From New York” was a decade ago, but it has now been updated in honor of this milestone season. Jerk: How I Wasted My Wasted Life Watching Television” by Adam Buckman : Buckman was The New York Post’s longtime television critic, and as you can tell from the title he has a terrific self-deprecating wit. One thing is certain: Buckman has never been in awe of big names. He details sparring with Jerry Seinfeld, who was was upset
By Lloyd Carroll with an article Buckman had written about the quality of Seinfeld’s sitcom starting to decline in 1997; and with Howard Stern, who went into a screed on his radio show when Buckman wrote about what appeared to be the lazy effort Stern was putting into his former Saturday night TV show. Buckman gives also insight into the philosophy of Rupert Murdoch’s Post: “Other newspapers treat celebrities with kid gloves. We use boxing gloves!” Nowhere was that more evident than when the Post understandably got upset with David Letterman for giving interviews with The New York Times and The New York Daily News, but snubbed them. From that moment on, the Post became Jay Leno’s unofficial publicist. Being a thorough TV historian, Buckman devotes a chapter to game show hosts, a segment of entertainers that tends to be overlooked by the media. This book shows that Adam Buckman is far from a jerk. If you’re a TV buff, pick this one up. The Simpsons Family History by Matt Groening (Abrams): “Saturday Night Live” is not the only broadcast network show commemorating a milestone:
Fox’s“The Simpsons” has entered its 25th season. To celebrate, Abrams Books has released a coffee table book on TV’s best-known animated family. The good news is that it features terrific artwork from “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening of Homer and the gang from over the years. The bad news is that there is absolutely no commentary from any of the writers or cast of theshow. This book is for diehard “Simpsons” fans only, and yes, there are a lot of them.

Country newcomer Sandra Lynn made her SiriusXM’s "The Highway" debut on November 26 with the premiere of her single, “Afterparty.” The upbeat yet soulful party tune, produced by Ross Copperman (Dierks Bentley, Brett Eldredge, Keith Urban), is available now. “Afterparty,” co-written by Copperman, Nicole Gallyon, and Jana Kramer, showcases Lynn’s smooth voice and is “just the right amount of party and sultry to get a crowd dancing while maintaining a romantic message Veruca Salt meant for the person you love,” according to a press release. Lynn’s single is the first she’s brought to SiriusXM; fans can find her self-titled debut EP on iTunes, where it was released earlier this year with Rascal Flatt’s
Jay DeMarcus at the helm. The music video for her song “You Belong,” directed by Trey Fanjoy (Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood), garnered more than 100,000 views on YouTube and reached #6 on CMT Pure’s “12 Pack” earlier this year. Lynn has opened for acts such as Cole Swindell and Kenny Rogers, and has performed at CMA Music Fest, OshKosh Air Show, and Summerfest in 2014.
