A group of fast-rising area music stars will band together for a special charity benefit concert, “Music For Michelle,” on Friday, January 23 at 7 pm at Farmingdale High School, located at 150 Lincoln Street in Farmingdale. The evening of music will feature “Amerian Idol” alumni Robbie Rosen and Caleb Hawley; The Janes, produced by Donnie Klang (season four and five winner of MTV's “Making The Band”); “The Voice” alumni Alessandra Guercio and Marissa Ann; and other aritsts. After 16 years of performing more than 100 concerts annually, releasing seven studio albums and selling more than 3.3 million tracks online, Umphrey’s McGee might be forgiven if they chose to rest on their laurels and attend to their lives as husbands and fathers. But you’d be wrong. With their eighth studio album, Similar Skin, and first for their own indie label, Nothing Too Fancy (N2F) Music (distributed by RED), the group – which formed on the Notre Dame campus outside of South Bend, Indiana in 1997 – has something to prove; they followed it up recently with Reskinned, a unique project available at Amazon.com. And that’s not just to their ever-loyal fan base, but to those who have never heard a note, or worse – dismiss them as “too sophisticated, too complex” or think they know what Umphrey’s McGee is all about. “We’re definitely not associated with a threeminute verse-chorus-verse song structure,” admits singer-songwriter-guitarist Brendan Bayliss about Similar Skin’s “trim the fat” direction, which saw them aim to strut their rock and progressive roots.

This time around, those musical touchstones range from the melodicism of Police, U2, The Beatles and Nirvana, the symphonic prog of Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Yes, and Genesis to the thunder of Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Soundgarden, and Pantera: “Every night, we have the opportunity to play whatever and however long we want. Going into the studio, the challenge was to be as concise as possible, to trim all the fat we could.” Produced by Umphrey’s McGee in conjunction with Manny Sanchez and Greg Magers and recorded in between tour dates at I.V. Labs in Chicago, Similar Skin was conceived as “a coherent

vision,” featuring plenty of dynamics and contrast, with many of the songs coming from their live repertoire. “We tried to get the most concise, exact version of each particular song,” explains Jake Cinninger, who wrote and sang lead on two new songs for the album, “Little Gift” and “Hindsight,” composed at his own Boondock Studio in Michigan, not far from his South Bend home. The band remains Brendan Bayliss, Jake Cinninger, Joel Cummins, Ryan Stasik, Kris Myers, and Andy Farag.

For almost 20 years, Clay stayed out of the spotlight, but Dice would not stay down. The Gambler

Starring Mark Wahlberg and John Goodman Directed by Rupert Wyatt Paramount

This new movie is based on the 1974 film of the same name that starred James Caan, then at the peak of his career coming off starring roles in Brian’s Song and The Godfather. In the original Gambler film, Caan played Axel Freed, a literature professor with a serious gambling addiction that found himself $44,000 in debt – serious money during the Watergate era. Fast forward 40 years, and Mark Wahlberg is Jim Bennett, an English professor who is a novelist manque; his most recent book sold a paltry 17,000 copies. It’s clear that its commercial failure has taken a toll as he constantly berates his students, but he does have a soft spot for Amy Phillips (Brie Larson), a top student who is attractive yet shy, and a star basketball player, Lamar Allen (Anthony Kelley), who has NBA aspirations and is a lot sharper than he lets on. Like Caan’s Axel Freed, Wahlberg’s Jim Bennett is a gambling addict whose habit forces him to make the acquaintance of underworld figures who want a return of their principal along with an exorbitant return on their investment. That is where the similarities between the Gambler films end, however. Axel Freed had a great relationship with his family, and was a generally content person with the exception of his gambling vice. Jim Bennett is self-loathing and hates his mother, who places material things above love. He claims that he wants to get rid of all of his possessions, but he loves driving a fancy sports car,

wearing his Armani suits, and living in a beautiful condo. Bennett represents the prototypical hardcore gaming addict who doesn’t seem to care whether he wins or loses as long as he has action. When on a good run at the blackjack table, Jim inevitably lets every chip ride until he goes bust on a hand and loses it all. Inevitably, he has to be extended lines of credit, known in the trade as being staked, by some nefarious types. As was the case with Nicolas Cage’s Leaving

Las Vegas, it’s difficult to watch a film where the lead character is self-destructive, but The Gambler is so good that it’s worth the effort. Although he doesn’t get much celebrity gossip media buzz, Wahlberg has long proven to be one of Hollywood’s dependable leading men – yet, as good as Wahlberg is, it’s the supporting cast that makes this film. Screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) has wisely created mobster loan sharks that are three-dimensional characters who have offbeat senses of humor. Mr. Lee (Alvin Ing) is a Korean underworld figure who is enthralled by Bennett’s brazenness, while Neville (Michael Kenneth Williams) is the Chris Tucker of thugs, using witty repartee and wild gesticulations. Outdoing both of them, however, is Frank (Goodman), who prides himself as a lender of last resort, and spouts gritty philosophical truisms. What’s unusual is that Frank is actually rooting for Jim to clean up his act and rid himself of his gambling habit. Thankfully, Monahan smartly avoids clichés by underplaying Jim’s relationship with his top student, Amy. They spend some time together on the screen, but it doesn’t dominate the storyline; the 25-year-old Larson has a bright future. The Gambler is worth the ticket-buying gamble. – Lloyd Carroll

hy is that the New York Jets always seem to lose the last game of a season in Miami – especially when it has playoff implications for them – but manage to win that last game when they are out of contention, thus getting a worse slot for the upcoming NFL Draft? The Jets’ win in Miami did not save the jobs of either head coach Rex Ryan or general manager John Idzik, who were dismissed the day after the season ended. Ryan is a great motivator to his players, and he never threw any of them under the bus by publicly criticizing them even when they deserved it. He was beloved by the media because he refused to talk in “coach speak,” and had a quick wit. Unfortunately, the Jets went backwards during his six-year stint, even if it was more for lack of talent than through any fault of his. The one dumb thing that Ryan did was play QB Mark Sanchez behind the third team in overtime during a meaningless preseason game with the New York Giants in 2013; Sanchez got hurt, and was lost for the season. The next QB, Geno Smith was rushed into service before he really got a chance to know the NFL. It seems as if the Jets never recovered from Sanchez’s injury. When a team is doing poorly, many fans normally chant for the owner to fire the manager or coach. It is a tribute to the sophistication of Jets fans that they did not seem to have a beef with Ryan, but instead focused on Idzik who clearly was not up to the GM’s job. Although team owner Woody Johnson denied that fan antipathy had anything to do with Idzik’s dismissal, there is little doubt that the folks who paid for both highway billboards and planes flying over the Jets practice facility calling for his firing had an effect on him. Johnson was careful to say “him or her” with regards to who the next

The game was also exciting as the Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Boston College Eagles in overtime, 31-30. It was Penn State’s first bowl game since the Jerry Sandusky scandal toppled coach Joe Paterno in 2011. Penn State’s defensive coordinator is Bob Shoop, who before joining the Nittany Lions was the

It’s bizarre how many National Hockey League players have come down with the mumps, a onetime major childhood disease that most of us thought was eradicated years ago. Surprisingly, this story

has not gotten a lot of play, which is kind of a mixed blessing for NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. If this kind of outbreak had occurred in Major League Baseball, the NFL, or the NBA, it would have gotten Ebola-like coverage. It wasn’t long ago Snow when then-NBA Sugar Commissioner David Cupcake Stern complained about Jacket how pro hoops players dressed like slobs, and imposed a dress code. Things have changed, as a lot of players take pride in their sartorial splendor. Express has just signed NBA star Stephen Curry, to be a spokesman and model for their threads. Many Vermont ski resorts are offering discounted rates and inexpensive downhill lessons for skiers in January as a way of creating ustomers. Snow Sugar makes attractive skioutfits for stylish women; no longer do females have to look bundled-up and stiff on the slopes. Wig-wearing, boa-draped, glitter-covered fans came from near and far to celebrate this historic event as the band delivered a sizzling set that turned Athens' Classic Center into a cosmic dance hall. Filmed in high-definition with DTS Surround Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, this 90-minute set is packed with fan favorites such as "Love Shack," "Rock Lobster," "Roam," "Funplex," "Give Me Back My Man," "Private Idaho," and "Planet Claire" (most of which will no doubt be performed at the upcoming concert in Westbury as well). The B-52s were formed on an October night in 1976 following drinks at an Athens Chinese restaurant. Naming themselves after Southern slang for exaggerated bouffant hairdos, the band soon attracted an ardent following, becoming the talk of Athens. Before long, they began making trips to New York City for gigs at CBGB, with their thrift store aesthetic and genre-defying songs electrifying

the post-punk underground. A record deal soon followed, and their self-titled debut sold more than 500,000 copies on the strength of its first singles, the garage rock party classic "Rock Lobster," and "52 Girls." Years later, the band scored its biggest hit with “Love Shack,’ and remains a touring smash to this day. Other hits have included such smashes as “Good Stuff,” “Planet Claire,” “Give Me Back My Man,” and “Funplex.” Thirty-six years and more than 20 million album sales later, The B-52s remain one of rock music's most one-of-a-kind – as well as enduring – original bands. Looking back at rhw band's pioneering fusions of punk, new wave, and vintage rock, it would be tough to imagine the contemporary musical landscape without the quirky, unique Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson, and past members Keith Strickland (still a non-touring part of the group) and Ricky Wilson. As brilliant entertainers as well as true ambassadors for peace, long may their party continue.

This last week in NYC has been absolutely insane. So many top DJs and acts came through the great city and put on incredible shows for everyone. One series of event was put on by RPM and was dubbed “Big Week NYC”; exactly what it was. Day after day through the entire last week of December there were headlining acts at headlining venues throwing down, with Carnage & DVBBS, Armin Van Buuren, Showtek, Kasakade Borgore, and Martin Garrix all performing that week. I had the privilege of attending two of these amazing shows. I spent my December 27th at Pier 94, hanging out in the VIP lounge and listening to some of my favorite artists including Heroes x Villians, Doctor P, DVBBS, and Carnage. What I liked about this show specifically was the range of genres that it covered, from trap to dubstep to house to a mixture of everything. It was a show that was able to please all types of EDM addicts and did so with some of the best in each category. Doctor P absolutely killed it with his hard hitting, dirty, bass heavy drops. Everything from his remixes to his originals, like “Bulletproof”, to his collaborations with Flux Pavilion, such as “Louder”. He set a wild mood, making everyone go crazy in preparation for DVBBS. They came in with the house

side of the night, playing everything from big room house to electro house and progressive house. They played their hits “Stampede” and “Tsunami” to a packed Pier 94, with the lights going crazy behind them. In addition to the perfection of the actual musical content, the lighting design was spectacular. The use of moving lights and lasers continually produced a “WOW” effect throughout the night. moment the whole night. Closing out the night was the big man himself, Carnage. Carnage’s stage presence is at the top of the list and he knows how to get his crowd going, switching from hit to hit, whether it’s mainstream music, hip hop, pop, trap, twerk, latin, house; this man can play it all. The transitions and song combinations he comes up with are very effective and he knows how to play to his crowd. This is the third time I’ve seen him this year, and every time his set changes, which is something I like to see in a DJ. After recuperating for a few days from

my night at Pier 94, I prepared to head out to Pier 36 for one of the biggest NYE shows around. Jay Hardway, Julian Jordan, Ansolo, and Oliver Heldens opened up for the 18 year old EDM superstar, Martin Garrix. I arrived rather early, coming in midway into Jay Hardway’s set. I had never really heard of Hardway before so I was curious to see what his sound was like. His style is very similar to that of Martin Garrix,

interesting and energetic at the same time. He closed with his big hit, “Koala”, which was the perfect way to lead in to Martin Garrix’s set. Martin Garrix’s appearance was nothing short of what you might expect. A countdown to New Year’s on the screen, ending at 12 midnight, the start of a new year, and the start of Martin Garrix’s set. He opened with a mood lifting, epic sounding progressive house song as the confetti cannons fired and the lights blared on the audience, signaling that the New Year was officially here. As soon as the first drop played, people knew what to expect for the rest of the performance. It was a full set of hard hitting bangers, song after song making the people jump. Everything from multiple remixes of his hit “Animals” to “Tremor” to “Wizard” to “Set Me Free” was played, filling the room with vibrancy and making the start of the year a wild one. He mashed songs together that you would have never expected and played songs that you haven’t heard in years, all smoothly and fluidly, blending the songs together like an artisan. I am confident in saying that was most likely the best NYE party that was going on that night. Shop Till You Need To Recharge: It's the era of Kickstarter and Indegogo, and here comes yet another new concept in media: OPEN.TV Shopping Network is an idea for an e-commerce technology company that, according to its owner, former TV reporter Paul Boyd, could fill a void in shopping on the web. According to Boyd, many shoppers are turning to social platforms such as YouTube with the hope of finding a quality "unboxing" video of the actual product they want to purchase. In that light, OPEN.TV is being launched in an attempt to fill the demand and answer what he terms as “intense consumer demand for a better online shopping experience.” The site will offer 3D product images, POV cameras, dynamic video production, and modern production techniques. The company's Indiegogo campaign was linked at OPEN.TV … SiriuXM's golf coverage is like nothing else in media, devoting hours to original programming about a sport that otherwise doesn’t get a lot of air time. The network recently signed Bob Ford, widely considered the preeminent club professional in America, to host a new show on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio (XM channel 93, Sirius channel 208) that will focus on the highly competitive ranks of amateur golf and showcase some of the best non-professional players in the country … Shout! Factory continues to be a TV fanatic's dream, releasing on DVD many classic television series that even ardent fans may have forgotten about. Released recently was a massive boxed set with the entire “Sgt. Bilko/The Phil Silvers Show” series; season sets for “Hill Street

Country Blues” and Jack Klugman's “Quincy M.E.”; and two different DVD releases featuring the suddenly resurgent “Weird” Al Yankovic … This next item personally bothers your humble writer: I was a gigantic comic book collector until my parents hounded me to stop reading “those funny books” at the age of about 13. Further proof that my parents knew absolutely nothing about anything: An old comic book that originally sold for a mere 10 cents on newsstands was purchased for $3.2 million in a recent eBay auction. The pristine Action #1, which marks Superman's first appearance, was purchased by New Yorkers Stephen Fishler and Vincent Zurzolo, co-owners of ComicConnect.com, an online auction house, and Metropolis, the vintage comic book dealer. For decades, Action #1 has been the most highly valued comic bookin the world, with only 100 copies in existence. This particular copy that was sold at the auction is the highest rated of all, with a 9.0 grading and incredibly rare white pages. The sale surpasses the previous record of nearly $2.2 million, set by ComicConnect in 2011, when it auctioned the Action #1 owned by actor Nicholas Cage. "Action #1 is the Holy Grail of comic books," said Fishler, who created the 10-point grading scale that has become the industry standard. "It not only introduced

Trace Of Greatness: It made country music history – and area history as well. Eagle Rock Entertainment will ring in 2015 with Live Country!, Trace Adkins’ new live DVD to be released today (January 13). Live Country! is a 116-minute concert DVD shot at The Paramount in Huntington in August 2014. The 20song set includes Adkins’ high-octane hits “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” “Ladies Love Country Boys,” “Songs About Me,” and “Chrome,” as well as ballads such as“You’re Gonna Miss This,” and “Every Light In The House.” Live Country! also includes a bonus interview with Adkins as well. Good Times reviewed this historic Huntington concert, as writer Bob Wilson and ace concert photographer Wayne Herrschaft of HeadlampDigital.com were on hand to document the show. “The evening would feature what pretty much amounted to a live Trace Adkins’ Greatest Hits pacakge – much to the delight of his audience,” wrote Wilson in issue 1156. “Adkins sang as strongly as his six-piece band played, with a pair of female backup singers rounding out the act. At the end of 1973, Max's closed for a short while; it changed hands as Tommy and Laura Dean took over from Ruskin. They brought in the always-edgy Peter Crowley, who brought in Patti Smith, Blondie, and The Ramones. During the short period when Max's was closed, Hilly Kristal changed "Hilly's On The Bowery" into CBGB, and there were two clubs spotlighting bands that would soon be iconic, serving as prototypes for what would become UK punk a few years later. However, Max's is where it truly all began, where “other” types were welcome and celebrated, ushered in by the Warhol influence. Max's is where Ziggy-era David Bowie was introduced to Iggy Pop, where the revolutionary band Suicide created a style and sound that has since been imitated but never duplicated, where Robert Gordon brought rockabilly

According to the AMI Jukebox Year-End Music Charts, classic rock still rules. The most popular jukebox artist of 2014 was the seminal southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, racking up 6,960,000 individual song plays. At around three minutes per song, that comes out to 347,963 hours – or the equivalent of 39 years of non-stop Skynyrd. Other mega-popular jukebox artists for 2014 included Guns N' Roses, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Zac Brown Band — the latter of which still received nearly 26 years of consecutive play. California-based, female-fronted rock band Dorothy (vocalist Dorothy, drummer Zac Morris, guitarist Mark Jackson, and bassist Gregg Cash) recently released its debut EP of the same name via all digital retailers.
