THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET

The trend in restaurants today seems to be to make the names easy to remember...Taste, Food, Toast, Stuff and now we have the logical extension....Eat. Eat is a neat new gastropub that opened in Oceanside and is serving up some unusual takes on comfort food. For example, poutine has moved out of its Quebecois environs and is now featured on many menus in the area. It really is nothing more than french fries, covered with cheese curds and then drowned in gravy. Eat has upped the ante, with their version

with duck fat fries and has a duck demi-glaze and fresh herb coating. Absolutely delicious, although there could have been more cheese. Burgers are served on a wood plank, and here the selections are top notch, including the Mackin Burger, a fried mackin cheese, fondue on an onion roll, or the the vry artry clogging 'CureAll,” which is a bacon double cheeseburger in between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches, with crispy potato sticks, sriracha, and bacon ranch dressing. Our personal choice is th 50/50 burger, which is half ground beef (chuck & short rib) and half ground bacon with cheddar and potato sticks on a pretzel roll. Like bacon, this is a must try. The home made chicken pot pie was a beautiful thing to see, a huge puff of pastry that reminder you of a gigantic popover, filled with vegetables, potatoes and chicken. Delicious, but it could have used much more chicken.

by Rich Branciforte Eat is a homey place, absolutely packed on the weekends, but a great place to try some innovative dishes ... The good looking bar offers a nice assortment of microbrews. Eat is located at 2823 Long Beach Rd, Oceanside 516-7669547.

John Brown's Smokehouse's motto is “serious BBQ,” and this Long Island City joint is showingwhy NYC is becoming a great barbecue destination. Located in a dreary industrial stretch, John Brown's offers up some righteous ribs, pulled pork, and brisket at industrial level prices. You can order your favorite meat by the pound, and the prices range from $7 up. The pulled pork was succulent, the ribs were great, and the brisket, which has garnered raves from critics across the five boroughs is tender as can be, although cooked lean. We would have preferred more fat and bark. A great deal is the 2 meat platter

John Brown's

which is only $16.50 and includes crispy hand cut fries. We were not blesed enough to be there when they still had some burnt ends left; we understand this is some sort of a religious experience and the ends often sell out by 1 pm. Oh, well; all the more reason for us to head back for a followup. A small but well stocked bar in the back has nice selection of beers, wine, and ciders. John Brown's is the real deal, well worth the trip. They’re at 10-33 44th Drive in LIC; (347) 617-1120.

Film Reviews

American Sniper

Starring Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller Directed by Clint Eastwood Warner Bros.

The film has already set records as one of the most successful January releases of all time, and for good reason: Once again, director Clint Eastwood makes us feel, and think, and wonder about the choices that ordinary people are forced to make time and again in the course of their lives. If there was ever any question that the actor-turned-l ensman is one of the great film directors of our time, those doubts should be erased after this jarring and original new picture. The story of this film is now common knowledge: Bradley Cooper portrays Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, ranked as the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle, dubbed “Legend” among his peers for his accuracy in protecting his military brothers in the height of the Iraq war, served an incredible four tours, performing a job that few would ask to do. Despite his success on the battlefield, Kyle comes home and finds himself an entirely different person, one that his loving, faithful wife (Sienna Miller in the best performance of her career) can barely recognize. Cooper is riveting as Kyle; it is almost impossible to think of the emotions the soldier must endure – pride, accomplishment, and honor mixed with regret, sadness, and heartache, based on who he has been forced to shoot during his unfathomable 160 kills – as he returns from his duty. Yet, Eastwood, like a good boxing referee,

plays this straight down the middle; there’s no politicizing, no preaching, no swells of music playing while flying flags. It is as gripping and realistic a film as produced by any Hollywood studio in years; a perfect ad campaign has made the movie close to a cultural phenomenon. Who would have predicted such intense storytelling could become a box office sensation?

Film Reviews

After attending this screening, we turned on our cell phone and looked up The Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarrior.org), not that we needed much prompting. Kyle’s tale is only one thousands that our service men and women have to tell; it’s our duty now to listen. Kudos to Eastwood, Cooper, and company for doing their part in opening ears and hearts in that regard.

Taken 3

Starring Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Forest Whitaker, Dougray Scott, Maggie Grace Directed by Olivier Megaton 20th Century Fox

Is it a rule now: Every time a season changes, we get to watch Liam Neeson run down the street with a gun and a stony, grim face? It seems like his previous potboiler, A Walk Among The Tombstones, is just leaving some cineplexes; in April, his next actioner, Run All Night, will be released, already accompanied by promotional photos that look just like the ones from this picture, and the other one before that. And the one before that. Perhaps screen number seven at the UA Westbury Stadium 12 should just be dubbed the “Liam Neeson Action Screen”; think of the money that could be saved from not having to change the roadside sign for that screen ever again. Or maybe the name of Neeson's next movie could be Taken A Walk Among The Tombstones Before A Run All Night. If you think our snark means that Neeson is starting to repeat himself, consider that even the title of Taken 3 is about as imaginative as the film itself. From his performance, Neeson obviously knew it wasn't much when he agreed to reprise his role as retired CIA member Bryan Mills; despite all the action and gunplay, the expression on Neeson's face ranges from craggy and haggard to just plain tired. After 93 minutes of mindless action clichés, you'll probably be as tired as Neeson looks after watching this.

If you've seen the first two Taken films, you can probably write the outline of this new one yourself. Here's the quick version: Yeah, someone's out to mess with Mills' family again, and this time it's his ex, Lenore (the eternally beautiful Janssen), whose marriage to her quite creepy new hubby, Stuart (Scott), is moving along anything but swimmingly. Yeah, Mills' daughter, Kim (Grace), has to go through hell once again when tragedy strikes. And once in pursuit of the baddies causing all this trouble, Mills solemnly vows … yeah, you know.

The addition of the always welcome Forest Whitaker is just about the only thing that give the proceedings the slightest bit of lilt; we realize he's not a body-beautiful type, but we'd wager a new spy or law enforcement character based around Whitaker's intelligent persona could be a moneymaker in waiting. Until that happens, we guess there's going to be a Taken 4, where a Sakrete-faced Neeson attempts to gain revenge for the untimely demise of The Ghost Of Christmas Past, Kenny from “South Park,” or Bambi's mother.

any New York Mets fans were disappointed that the team’s former catcher, Mike Piazza, fell short in the Baseball Hall of Fame voting by the membership of Baseball Writers Association of America. Piazza was listed on roughly 70 percent of the BBWAA ballots, but 75 percent is the amount of votes needed for election into the Cooperstown baseball museum. There is no argument that Piazza is the greatest-hitting catcher of all time, and that’s no small feat when considering past performers such as as Yogi Berra, Bill Dickey, Carlton Fisk, and Johnny Bench, all with plaques in the Hall of Fame. What is often overlooked is that Piazza was a fine defensive catcher as well. While he was average at best at throwing out baserunners who were trying to steal, he was superb at preventing wild pitches by snagging countless balls in the dirt. Pitchers also credited him for calling the right pitches at the right times. Piazza should have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he became eligible three years ago. Unfortunately, some curmudgeonly BBWAA members made the assumption that Piazza was the beneficiary of performance-enhancing drugs; it’s likely because of the era in which he played, as well

BOWLING

as a reported

Mike observation of acne on Piazza his back that some

decided was indicative of steroid use. I am not sure how baseball writers can believe that they are dermatologists. The good news is that it will be shocking if Pizza doesn’t easily clear 75 percent of the votes next January; the only slam-dunk candidate will be Ken Griffey Jr. Trevor Hoffman, a dominant relief pitcher for the San Diego Padres who like Griffey will be on the ballot for the first time, also has a good shot of being elected. Veteran sports commentator Bob Costas declared that Piazza was a lock during the Hall of Fame announcement on The MLB Network. Even New York Daily News columnist Bill “Guilty Until Proven Innocent” Madden conceded that it’s inevitable that Piazza will be elected. Newsday’s David Lennon wrote that it’s time to place statistics above suspicions; this writer concurs. Although it’s easy to surmise that Piazza would rather have been elected on this go-round, the good

news is that he won’t be overshadowed in the crowded Hall of Fame Class of 2015 that includes pitchers Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, John Smoltz, and infielder, Pedro outfielder, Martinez and catcher Craig Biggio. What hasn’t been discussed is why the Hall of Fame reduced the time that a player can stay on the ballot; it has been dropped from 15 to 10 years, unfortunate for solid choices such as Tim Raines, Lee Smith, and many others. I thought that this was designed by the shrinking BBWAA to exert more influence over today’s players; however, New York Post baseball columnist Ken Davidoff told me that it was the Hall of Fame that decided on its own to cut down the time period. The Hall of Fame’s decision to cut the ballot time is a self-inflicted wound. In 2013, the BBWAA failed to elect anyone to the Hall. There are

going to be years where there are going to be no obvious sure bets. This is when credible candidates such as Jeff Bagwell, Gary Sheffield, Alan Trammell, Fred McGriff, Larry Walker, Jeff Kent, Edgar Martinez, and the aforementioned Raines and Smith have better than usual chances of getting the magic 75 percent. Having no one elected in a given year is bad business for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as for the economy of central New York State in late July, when the Cooperstown induction ceremonies means thousands of visitors and millions of dollars. I never met Stuart Scott, who died on January 4,

but I always enjoyed his work. He is one of the reasons that ESPN’s SportsCenter has become a cultural icon in a crowded television marketplace. At last summer’s ESPY Awards, Scott brilliantly pointed out that because one dies doesn’t mean that you lost to cancer, but rather it’s the kind of life you led that truly counts. The passing of former New York Giants head coach Allie Sherman at the age of 91 earlier this month seemed to go largely unnoticed. Sherman was the Giants head coach for most of the 1960s, but he’s probably best remembered by Giants fans for being in charge of “Big Blue” when they were blown out 37-14 by the Jets in a 1969 pre-season game held at the Yale Bowl, the first-ever meeting between the local NFL teams. It started the infamous “Goodbye Allie!” chant which lasted the entire 1969 season, after which Sherman was fired by team owner Wellington Mara. As long as he didn’t break any ethics laws by being flown to Dallas and sitting in Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ suite, who cares that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is a fan of “America’s Team”? In some ways, it’s refreshing that Christie did not take the safe route by saying that he roots for the politically better choices, given his constituency, of the Jets, Giants or Philadelphia Eagles. The uproar over Christie’s allegiance to the Cowboys reminds me of the courage of then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani showed during the Yankees versus Mets World Series in 2000. He could have taken the safe route by feigning neutrality, but he was not shy about wearing his loyalty to the Yankees on his sleeve ... or any other part of his clothing, for that matter.

Photos:

Can you imagine the plight of New York Knicks season ticket holders this year? Granted, you can’t find Knicks management responsible for injuries, such as what has befallen superstar forward Carmelo Anthony. On the other hand, trading J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to the Cleveland Cavaliers for next to nothing in return except for creating salary cap space was the equivalent of putting up the white flag. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Knicks quietly offer rebates to some of their loyal customers.

When asked why she feels now is the time for a tour like this, Wynonna said, “I have shared the stage with some of the greatest singers and musicians in the world and I have recorded with artists from all genres of music. It has been an amazing journey for me. I'm an ordinary woman that extraordinary things have happened to because I choose to continue to suit up and show up where I am called. I am more passionate now than I have ever been about my life, my gift, my faith, hopes and dreams, and I want so much to share my story and my songs with my fans. I

RaeLynn: This 20-year-old spitfire was a quarter finalist on the second season of “The Voice.” These days, she's signed to Republic Nashville and her first album should be released later this year. Her debut single, “God Made Girls,” scored on many country charts this past summer. Kristy Lee Cook: Now well-established, Cook was a hit on the seventh Kristy season of Lee “AmeCook rican Idol.” She's already scored hit singles with "15 Minutes Of Shame" and "Airborne Ranger Infantry"; she's also been a TV host on “Outdoors's 10 Best” and “Goin' Country.” Katie Armiger: At just 23, Arminger has already charted five songs on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart; her album Fall Into Me soared into the Top 10 on the U.S. Country Chart and all the way to #32 on the Billboard Top 200, a remarkable feat for a new artist of any genre. She is now established as Cold River Records' biggest star.

have experienced so many personal and professional highs and lows on this journey, and having been on the road for 34 years now, I am so grateful for the wisdom and experience I have gained throughout all that has happened on and off stage. I'm looking forward to sharing my message with others, to celebrate this time in my life with the fans that have supported me all these years, as well as connect with new fans.” As a five-time Grammy winner and New York Times bestselling author, Wynonna’s career has always revolved around telling stories. Whether she’s using her rich, commanding voice to sing one of her countless hits or sitting down for one of her many bold, honest television appearances, Wynonna always gets her point across with unflinching honesty and wisdom gained over the course of her very public life. Wynonna has been working with her husband, producer and drummer Moser, on solo material for her eighth studio album, due out later this year on Curb Records. The couple also recently released “Follow Me,” an original song exclusively for the film The Hornet’s Nest that features real footage to tell the story of an elite group of U.S. troops sent on a dangerous mission deep inside one of Afghanistan’s most hostile valleys. They performed the track on a “Good Morning America” telecast this past spring.

The 2015 DigiTour The Space at Westbury February 14 at 4 PM • thespaceatwestbury.com (800) 745-3000 DigiTour, which caught fire during the 2014 summer concert season, is a touring music and social media festival production company, and produces the world's first “social media tour.” The budget-priced tour began as a showcase for social media stars from YouTube, but its roster of performers has now expanded to include Vine, Twitter, and Instagram stars as well as traditional pop music stars. Andrea Russett (pictured) has been a regular at stops on the tour; keep up with the goings on at @digitour on Twitter for further updates – but if you're glued to your iPhone, you probably already know who's going to be here.

Spandau Ballet

NYCB Theatre at Westbury February 7 at 8 PM thetheatreatwestbury.com (516) 334-0800

If you miss the 1980s, let this ease your pangs a bit: Spandau Ballet is back on the road, eager to supply their fans with their once-of-a-kind sense of harmony and melody as their “Soulboys Of The Western World Tour” moves along, making its area stop at this famed theater in the round. The band still consists of Tony Hadley, Martin Kemp, Gary Kemp, Steve Norman, and John Keeble – and expect nothing less than the hits, including the now-standards “True,” “Gold,” “Only When You Leave,” and all the other ultra-romantic classics from the era when CDs were new.

Later, he became a writer at 'Late Night with Conan O’Brien' and then a regular performer on 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.' ... Demetri has brown hair, and he is allergic to peanuts. COMEDY Leaner, Meaner, Ready For Westbury: After a lengthy absence, she's back – and she may look a little different, but don't expect her to be any less caustic: Standup superstar Lisa Lampanelli brings her all-new “Leaner Meaner Tour” to The NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Friday, February 6 at 8 pm. Tickets are on sale now; log on to ticketmaster.com or livenation.com, stop by the NYCB Theatre box office on Brush Hollow Road in Westbury,or use charge by phone at (800) 745-3000. Lampanelli, a huge area Lisa Lampanelli: favorite The Queen thanks to her Of Mean previous appearances in the region, is known as “Comedy’s Lovable Queen of Mean.” This equal opportunity offender has been a regular on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and Howard Stern’s Sirius satellite radio shows, and she has appeared on “The Late Show With David Letterman,” “Chelsea Lately,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Dr. Oz Show,” and “Good Morning America.” She was also a member of the cast of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” Season 5, cementing her rise as she joined 17 other celebrities on the newest season of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” This fifth installment of the show, with the largest-ever lineup of famous faces competing for charities of their choice, was a ratings bonanza for NBC. She was also seen on Comedy Central's “Reno 911!” In 2009, Lampanelli entered the ranks of comic greats and premiered her first one-hour HBO comedy special, “Long Live The Queen,” to high ratings. That same year, her autobiography,

Chocolate, Please: My Adventures In Food, Fat And Freaks, hit bookstores and scored on several best-seller lists. Of late, Lampanelli is also known for her many Comedy Central and Friars Club roasts. She has lambasted Jeff Foxworthy, Pamela Anderson, David Hasselhoff, Betty White, Donald Trump, and Flavor Flav, to name a few – plus, she was honored to serve as roastmaster on “The Comedy Central Roast Of Larry The Cable Guy.” Lisa’s second one-hour special, “Dirty Girl,” was nominated for a Grammy Award for 2007’s Best Comedy Album of the Year. In 2012, Lisa was thrilled to be cast as Aunt Josie in the feature film debut from “Sopranos” creator David Chase entitled Not Fade Away, starring the late James Gandolfini. Lampanelli also stars as a series regular on “Bounty Hunters,” CMT’s first-ever animated show. Currently, Lampanelli is making a departure from her signature “insult” comedy with her first developmental theater production, Fat Girl Interrupted, to show a side of the supposed “Queen Of Mean” that very few would believe would exist. Despite her bent for skewering virtually everyone around her during her live shows and TV appearances, Lampanelli, in real life ranks among the most beloved figures in modern comedy. Much as many current stars still revere the equally “abrasive” comedian Don Rickles, those who have worked with Lampanelli hold her in major esteem ... as do her fans.

Topping the charts on major digital retailers BarnesandNoble.com and iBooks, Hard Limit also sold out of retail locations across the U.S. just days after its release. Released in December, Hard Limit joins its other wildly successful predecessors in the Hacker series, Hardwired (2013), Hardpressed (2013), and Hardline (2014). These titles regularly rank on the USA Today Best Seller lists. Both Hardwired and Hardline ranked on Amazon's TopSelling Books of 2014. Since the debut of her first novel just over a year ago, Wild has accomplished what it pretty much impossible: She has sold more than one million books without the representation of a traditional publisher, and has turned down several seven figure deals from “Big Five” publishers in order to stay independently published, maintaining control of her content

and publishing schedule. Wild has recently joined the ranks of top-selling romance authors in the Romance Writers of America "Honor Roll." A former tech CEO, Wild was tired of reading about professionally inferior heroines common in conventional romance, and has since captivated audiences with her feisty female characters. The final installment of the Hacker series, Hard Love, is slated for release this summer. Wild will also continue her Bridge series, which includes the bestselling title On My Knees, and has plans for an array of other projects sure to satisfy her hungry fan base. On social media: Facebook.com/meredithwild. Learn more about her upcoming writing projects at meredithwild.com. News & Notes: It's nirvana for both punks and music history buffs:

Touchstone has just issued Punk Rock Blitzbrieg: My Life As A Ramone by Marky Ramone. The memoir has drawn raves from all quarters – many coming from musicians and peers from The Ramones' heyday. It's not to be missed by rockers ... The recently issued DVD version of the final Monty Python concerts from London's O2 Arena, titled Monty Python Live: One Down, Five To Go (Entertainment One), is every bit as enjoyable as the closed-circuit shows in theaters last summer. If you missed them, this is the best way to catch up on a truly historic comedy event. Some critics railed that this show was a “greatest hits” event, but that was precisely the point; it serves as a wonderful, final goodbye for both the material and the troupe.

The 405 Blues Band The 405 Blues Band Independent

Who: The 405 Blues Band is a relatively new blues act based in Nassau County. The group is comprised of Earl Shelton (vocals, piano and organ, tenor saxophone), Bruce Kirshner (guitar, vocals), Mark Ambrosino (drums), and Lenny Nelson (bass, vocals). The album was produced, recorded, and mastered by Mark Ambrosino at The Madhouse in Queens. The Artists & Their Sound: Don't expect a lot of original songs here, but the choices of classics

should serve many a Long Island blues lover in good staid. Best of the bunch is a rocking cover of “Lucille,” a classic that everyone from The Guess Who to bar bands has tried to cover, usually with disastrous results – but this tight and tasty version is the best since Little Richard crushed his keys playing it back in the 1950s. Shelton proves himself a fine lead vocalist, and Nelson, Ambrosino, and Kirshner play with taste and style, a refreshing change from the usual licks-happy noodling and SRV wannabes heard in these parts. The Songs: “Fannie Mae,” “The Things I Used To Do,” “Don't Fight It,” “Lucille,” “The 405 Shuffle,” “Don't Deceive Me,” “Hi-Ho Blues,” “Lonesome Train,” “Shake Rattle & Roll,” “Chica Boo.” To Learn More About The Band: Log on to 405bluesband.webs.com.

The Artist & His Sound: From the artist himself about this quirky, home-recorded original project: “After releasing two six-song demos CDs as Pluto Nash, this is my first full-length CD … This is my homage to some of my favorite bands throughout my lifetime.” It's easy to hear these compositions and performances; log on to soundcloud.com or

Comedy’s Smart New ‘A-List’

There were many who claim the world of standup comedy became over-saturated during the late 1990s – but today, there are stars on the verge of becoming legends. Indeed, walking in the light of Bill Cosby, Mort Sahl, and George Carlin, there is Hannibal Buress, Jon Stewart, and Chris Rock. The quality is rising to the top of the quantity – and that's why today's “Alist” stars are selling out major venues, as John Oliver and Patton Oswalt did for their recent shows in the area.

Oliver, who left Comedy Central's “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” to strike out on his own with HBO's “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” couldn't be hotter; last year, he was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone (not to mention this very publication) and is being heralded as the voice of his generation – and what a learned, passionate voice it is; Oliver is a rarity in that, unlike other caustic observational comics and satirists, his good nature shines through even as he skewers government figures and ridiculous, self-serving political hacks. In essence, Oliver does everything we wish our politicians would do: He points out the truths and idiocies

John Oliver

about certain subjects, then comes up with logical (and dare we say possible) solutions, all with the common good in mind. He also manages to do so without becoming a strident cartoon. In essence, he's the antiMichael Savage or Mark Levin; he gets to the heart of what he's passionate about without resorting to slurs or damnation (which isn't to say that AM talk radio pundits aren't hilarious in their own ways; they just don't know that they are). During his Westbury performance, Oliver asked the packed NYCB crowd about silly things that people take seriously about Long Island, and when someone yelled out “the big duck building” – Flanders' famous

John Oliver • NYCB Theatre At Westbury Patton Oswalt • Carnegie Hall • New York City oddity that beckons tourists – he whipped out his iPhone and marveled that such a landmark was ranked as Long Island's top attraction online. Yet, his point was that this type of thing is what makes his adopted country of America the greatest on earth, that we can take such a meaningless thing and blow it up into a “national historic site.” It's that same mix of silliness and seriousness that makes Oliver a national treasure as well. A few hours before his January 9 show at Carnegie Hall, Patton Oswalt “Tweeted” that his concert had sold out. It's that “I can't believe this is happening to me” charm that makes the diminutive standup star one of the best at this trade at this writing, even as he shrugs off the fact that when it comes to observational

humor, few can take a small subject and blow it up into gigantic laughs better than he can. This self-proclaimed comic bookloving nerd is growing up fast; most of his shows these days – unlike the somewhat more strident humor found on his early recordings – are about his family, in particular his fiveyear-old daughter. In that light, his stories about the trials of parenthood touch a serious chord with an audience that seems to be growing up with him. Yet, no one attracts a more varied audience; the crowd was comprised of everything from Village hipsters to seniors. It also was one of the few comedy shows of recent vintage that featured Patton not as much as a single Oswalt heckle or misguided catcall; perhaps the crowd, like Oswalt himself, was in awe of the venue. For an artist who has graduated from grimy college clubs to one of the world’s great theaters, this warm and funny night may have been Oswalt’s crowning achievement.

CLASSIC ROCK Hold On – Moore’s Still Coming: Approaching his sixth decade as a recording artist, the accolades keep coming for Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame legend Sam Moore, who made an indelible mark as part of the classic duo Sam & Dave, and who has kept on as a solo artist. As always, the Georgia born, Miami raised “Soul Man” has continued to show his versatility with a wide variety of recording projects and live performances that showcase his once-in-a-lifetime talent. Moore began last year in a city where he made musical history – Memphis, Tennessee. During the 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Sam Moore weekend, Moore recorded his most recent project, "They Killed A King," which honored the memory of the statesman Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A few weeks later, Moore returned to Stax Records to record a performance for the popular weekend series “CBS Sunday Morning.” A lifelong fan of country music, Moore has had success in the format over the years – thanks to his 1994 collaboration with Conway Twitty on “Rainy Night In Georgia,” which marked the last recording of Twitty’s career. Moore has also shared the stage with artists ranging from Joe Diffie to George Jones. Moore followed up his much talked-about performance at the November 2013 tribute concert to Jones with an appearance at Marty Stuart’s “Late Night Jam” at the Ryman Auditorium in June, performing the classic Jones song “She Thinks I Still Care.” Moore also was part of a tribute to country legend Ronnie Milsap during the Country Music Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony in October, performing Milsap’s classic “Lost In The Fifties Tonight.” Moore’s soaring performance was so powerful that it inspired Vince Gill to join in. Always an artist to roll the dice and take musical chances, Moore also entered into the world of bluegrass in 2014, while collaborating with Nu-Blu on “Jesus And Jones,” which

Photos Provided By The Artists Or Their Representatives

Favorites & Legends Rock On garnered national attention and became a critically acclaimed single for this pairing of artists. Yet, Moore might have very well saved his top musical moment during the year of 2014 for his part in the tribute to Al Green during the taping of The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. Moore joined fellow R&B stalwart and fellow Grammy recipient Mavis Staples on a version of “Take Me To The River” that became one of the most buzzed-about segments of the Green tribute – one that also included such musical giants as Jennifer Hudson, Usher, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, The Kennedy Center Honors was

aired on December 30 on CBS, closing out the year on a high note. Yet, before he closed out the year, Moore headed to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where he performed at The Vallarta-Nayarit Classic Rock Festival before he and Lou Gramm, the former lead singer of Foreigner, were honored with a "Giants Of Rock" Lifetime Achievement Award. Also appearing were Dave Mason, Kansas, Cheap Trick, and Jefferson Starship. And, just like any great showman, Moore is setting the stage for more in 2015; he began the year with a performance at The Talking Stick Resort and Casino in Scottsdale, Arizona, and will be co-hosting The Starkey Hearing Foundation’s Super Bowl Mission – not a bad way to kick off his celebration of 60 years in the music business, which is in advent of the star’s 80th birthday on October 12, 2015.

Fire & Ice

The Pat Benatar Tribute’s ‘Best Shot’ Gets Even Bigger

Who: Fire & Ice has long ranked as one of the region’s most popular tribute acts. The Long Island-based unit is a tribute to Pat Benatar; the lineup for the group recently went through a transformation. Original members Darion (lead singer) and Rick Wolanski (drums) remain from the original lineup; added to the roster are Les Jannson and Ralph Carbone (famous for their stint in the Journey tribute Evolution), as well as C.C. Keys (who has performed with the Heart tribute act Heartless). The Artists & Their Sound: From a recent press release: “Fire & Ice has gone through some changes. The new all-star line up consists of some of the greatest musicians on Long Island from some of the greatest tribute bands ever. The band is still fronted by local recording artist Darion, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry and has had her original music heard on radio stations across the country. Rick Wolanski is still the man with the best view in the band; he is the original drummer. Joining the band is Les Jannson on bass and Ralph Carbone on guitar. Both Les and Ralph are from Evolution, the most popular touring Journey tribute band. Rounding out the band is C.C. Keys on keyboards, who is from Bad Animals (the Heart tribute). “Fire & Ice is still the best and only tribute to Pat Benatar on the east coast with Pat's full blessing. This blessing just helped the band land a weeklong gig at "The Sounds Like Summer Concert Series" at Disney's Epcot Center. They will be the first-female fronted band to play at Epcot in over 12 years. The band will be rocking Epcot's guests from July 5 through July 11. The band will also be returning to Resort World Casino in Jamaica on April 15. The last time they played they packed The Bar 360. This time, the show will be even bigger and better.” Through its history, Fire & Ice has performed at many of the area’s finest venues, as well as a host of private events. RHYTHM TRACKING

Everything Is Everything: Yes, Everything: A Black And White Monograph is the title of the new coffee table book from the brilliant Christopher Makos, and it is, indeed, everything. Consider it a journey from the early 1970s to this present moment. Makos is an exceptional photojournalist, documenting the shifting pop culture tides that brought contemporary society to its present state – people, places, things, seemingly random but ultimately not random at all, a road map of an evolving and dramatic embrace of the brave new world that we now inhabit. It is fascinating to visit each artifact on display in this book; they inspire a cumulative “shock and awe” journey through the worlds of art, music, film, and the objects that surround us that we sometimes forget are even there. We commend the folks at Glitterati, who have published this masterful document. You owe it to yourself to explore this definitive Makos masterwork. Combos Of Combos: Repertoire Records U.K. is releasing a series of DVD/CD combo packs featuring historic figures from the New York City rock scene of the 1970s, when Max's Kansas City and CBGB gave birth to the punk explosion. Europe was especially responsive to this scene and these artists, and while the U.K. always gets all the credit, it was Germany that showcased many of the less obvious candidates. While America only really got to know Blondie, Devo, and The Talking Heads thanks to the radio airplay generated by hit singles (and, to a lesser extent, Patti Smith and The Ramones), Germany welcomed all the acts onto TV programs such as MusikLaden and RockPalast. Now,

By Jimi LaLumia

the hour-long RockPalast concerts are being issued by Repertoire. While they are imports, they are “O Region” releases, meaning the DVDs can play in every country, unlike most import DVDs that are not compatible with U.S.-based machines. This past winter, two major titles hit Amazon and other online sales sites. A triple-disc set from Mink DeVille boasts a concert DVD and two complete CDs. DeVille, a Bruce Springsteen-ish singer/songwriter, enjoyed many of his greatest moments in Europe, and those tracks and hit singles, including "Cadillac Walk," "Spanish Stroll," and "Mixed Up Shook Up Girl," are all in this exciting collection. Lead singer Willy DeVille has passed away (in 2009), but this posthumous set is a great legacy item for an artist who deserved much more attention than he ever got on these shores. Repertoire has also released the much-bootlegged 1978 concert by Wayne County & The Electric Chairs as a single DVD and as a stunningsounding CD; the set includes a fullcolor booklet and incisive text written by Kris Needs, who edited the trendsetting UK punk mag ZigZag in the late 70s, and currently holds court at the UK's monthly Record Collector Magazine. The Wayne County DVD

is a bit of a shock as it's a straight-on rock & roll show minus all the banter and comedic bits that County fans came to expect; we're told that since the TV audience spoke German and probably wouldn't get the funny stuff, it was decided to just go song, song, song a la The Ramones, and it worked. At a time when U.S. labels are retreating from deluxe collections in favor of digital releases, we doff our caps to the folks at Repertoire as we hope that they find more historically important goods to share with us in 2015.

96 Tears The New Single From

JIMI LaLUMIA

Released by Chrome Orange Music/Media

22 • Good Times Magazine - January 27 - February 9, 2015

Jazz & Blues Hoochie Coochie For You: The New York based folkblues-rock band The Hoochie Coochie Men has released a new single, “Things I Know,” from their new EP, Big Blue Tree, which is slated for release this month. The single was recently premiered on GroundSounds. Founded at Lafayette College, The Hoochie Coochie Men started playing blues, which eventually has evolved into a sound incorporating a blend of many genres, including blues, folk, and rock. The band recently gained steam after finishing a 40-show summer tour of the northeast, including a stop at Jazz Up July in Stamford, Connecticut, where they opened for the the legendary bluesman B.B. King. The eight-time Grammy winning composer, Paul Winter, has described the band's sound as a “fresh and inspiring take on American roots music". They have also shared the stage with other national acts such as Badfish (A Tribute To Sublime), Pete Francis of Dispatch, Matt Costa, and Toy Soldiers. One of the strengths of The Hoochie Coochie Men is their musical versatility. All six

Alexis P. Suter

members began their careers in previous bands all over the northeast, each playing vastly different music. The group has two lead singers, each of whom brings diverse influences to the table: Zach Gold, from Rhode Island, has immersed himself in the blues and folk of the Mississippi Delta. Joey Tumulty's soulful voice calls to

The Hoochie Coochie Men

mind Ray Charles or Levon Helm. Lead guitarist Alex Musso never speaks on stage, but his solos more than make up for it; drummer Brian Duke and bassist Grant Kempski met in their college jazz band, when they both discovered they liked Led Zeppelin more than they liked jazz. The band's newest addition, the multi-instrumental Shawn Hogan, brings her roots in reggae and psychedelia, and pushes the band towards the future. Our take: We once didn’t want to eat in a restaurant called Pasta Fagioli because the name of the place was awful ... but the food was great. Likewise, a band in 2015 with a name like this one sounds like tip night caliber ... but it’s not. Try them for a refreshing take on roots music. Blues In Your Backyard: Here are upcoming shows in the area that will make you jump and shout: The ever-soulful Treme in Islip will welcome national recording artists The Alexis P. Suter Band on January 31. This is a special event at Treme; $20 admission. There may be limited seating available for this event. Premium seating may be reserved for an additional charge. Contact Treme at info@tremeislip.com or call (631) 277-2008, for more information or to reserve seating … One of the area’s true R&B stylists, piano master Danny Kean, returns to Bobbique in Patchogue on January 31 … Uppercut, the horn-driven band that merges R&B, blues, and roots, performs at Sunset Grill in Seaford on February 6.
