Queens Zoo To The Rescue
The Queens Zoo in Flushing recently welcomed five coyote pups to the zoo — four females and one male. After being rescued and rehabilitated in Massachusetts, the group of orphaned youngsters was brought to Queens in the spring. "Having these animals at the Queens Zoo is an opportunity for people to see coyotes up close and to learn more about these fascinating yet often misunderstood animals,"said Scott Silver, director and curator of the Zoo, on the organization's website. Learn more about the pups and learn about visiting the Zoo – open year-round – at the queenszoo.com website (pictured here).

Rain: A Tribute To The Beatles is a live multi-media spectacular that takes fans on a musical journey through the life and times of the world’s most celebrated band. Going further than before, the new edition of Rain adds more hits from the vast anthology of Beatles classics, including “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Hard Day’s Night,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Let It Be,” “Come Together,” and “Hey Jude,” to name but a few.

This concert event takes fans back in time with the legendary foursome delivering a notefor-note theatrical event that many of its fans claim is the next best thing to The Beatles. If the name of this show sounds familiar, it should – the original production of Rain ran on Broadway for 300 shows (and eight preview performances) at The Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City; the original stint lasted from October 2010 to July 2011. Here's another interesting tidbit about Rain: This show actually pre-dates Beatlemania, another show that ran on Broadway, by several years.

Mark Lewis, who served as a founding member and keyboarist of this tribute act, as well as manaager – looked back with pride on the tour's official website. “I’m proud to say that I was there when America tuned into 'The Ed Sullivan Show' and saw The Beatles presented to a nation for the first time,” recalled Lewis. “I remember what it was like to take the plastic wrap off of a Meet The Beatles LP, and be introduced to all of these classic songs for the first time. I remember looking forward to each new Beatles song, not knowing that these songs would evolve into universally accepted classic contemporary music that would last for several generations, if not eternity ... Our goal has always been to present this music in a live environment to audiences throughout the world, and most importantly, to maintain the integrity of The Beatles, and their music. After all, it is their music. We are just a few very fortunate guys that get to perform this music night after night. What’s better than that?”

The Boy Next Door Starring Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Guzman, John Corbett, Kristen Chenowith Directed by Rob Cohen Universal
January has historically been the month when film studios dump less-than-desirable product into movie theaters. When you add a film to that mix starring Jennifer Lopez, whose alleged talent has long escaped many, into the equation, the results are almost guaranteed to be astonishingly awful. Yes – The Boy Next Door certainly doesn’t buck the odds. Claire Peterson (Lopez) is a high school literature teacher, but of course “J-Lo” is not going to let playing an educator stop her character from wearing the latest clothes, sport model-like hair and makeup, and live in a Southern California mansion. All is not peaches and cream, however, as she is separated from her husband, Garrett (Corbett), an information technology executive. Claire caught Garrett cheating on her during a San Francisco business trip. Claire’s dorky teenage son, Kevin (Ian Porter) desperately needs a fatherly or big brotherly figure. Right on cue in steps Noah Sandborn (Guzman), a strapping 20 year-old from San Bernardino who has moved next door to Claire so that he can take care of his ailing grand-uncle. Noah can quote ancient Greek literature, fix pesky garage doors, and take apart and put back together any car’s engine. He asks Claire to come over and help him roast a chicken on a rare, rainy Saturday night in Southern California, and one thing leads to another, wink wink. The fact that Guzman, a former mixed martial arts star, looks like a combination of Channing Tatum, Jason Priestley, and James Franco makes this steamy scene with “J-Lo” credible, which is more than can be noted for most of this film. Like Lopez, Guzman gets to wear
preppy clothes for the entire film, which adds to his hunk factor. He looks like a Nautica or Polo Ralph Lauren model; in fairness, he does possess some acting ability. Of course, there are the expected regrets on Claire’s part the following morning. When she tries to break it to Noah gently that theirs was a wonderful one-night thing that won’t ever be repeated, he turns into a raving, maniacal stalker who will do whatever is necessary to make sure that she never reconciles with her estranged husband who, is trying to patch things up; it will be over the ex-hubby’s dead body if they do. The Boy Next Door goes downhill rapidly, as novice screenwriter Barbara Curry turns this movie into a poor version of one of CBS’s many primetime procedurals. The audience at the screening I attended started laughing as is they were watching one of the “Scary Movie” sequels, as Claire idiotically puts herself

Mortdecai
Starring Johnny Depp, Gywenth Paltrow, Olivia Munn, Paul Bettany, Jeff Goldbum, Ewan McGregor Directed by Davidd Koepp Lionsgate
It's been a comedy tradition for as long as movies have been around: Take a bunch of funny people, put them in a wacky situation, and let them do what they do best. In these type of all-star ensemble comedies, there have been hits (It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World), middling successes (This Is The End, Rat Race), and utter disasters (Clue, Murder By Death). The key, of course, is to cast really funny performers in roles that bring out the wacky best in them. Which brings us to the Pink Panther (or worse yet, Johnny English) wannabe Mortdecai, which casts exceptionally talented, world class actors … who aren't particularly funny, not in the least. “But wasn't Johnny Depp funny as Captain Jack Sparrow?” ask film fans. Yeah, sort of, but that was mainly because he was given decent material to work with. Mortdecai (jeez, every time we look at the title, it looks misspelled) looks and feels unfinished and rushed; it's as if they decided to release this oddball film simply because they had to (and, apparently, that
into one risky situation after another without using a shred of common sense – such as breaking into Noah’s basement when he isn’t home to try to find the video he made of their lovemaking session, or entering the home of a friend who is in danger even though the electricity has been turned off and it’s pitch black outside. Add to this nonsense the over-the-top burning farmhouse finale, which is straight from cliché cinema 101. Just about the only time when The Boy Next Door provides any true food for thought is a scene where Claire’s best friend, Vicki (the always welcome Chenoweth), sets up a double date for them. During the dinnertime conversation, Claire tells her date that she teaches “the classics,” and she is upset with his reaction. “The classics are nice, but we need to prepare students for the jobs in the workforce as well,” he replies. The scene abruptly ends with the filmmakers trying hard to make the guy look like a jerk, when in fact there is a lot of merit to his point. The reality is that expensive liberal arts colleges are under a lot of scrutiny exactly because there is a disconnect between what is taught and its value in the economic marketplace. In this new film’s defense, it can be argued that, like Showgirls, Saturday matinees, or those cheesy Ed Wood movies, The Boy Next Door is so bad that it’s actually good.
might be the case; Lionsgate actually moved up the release of this movie a couple of weeks, reportedly to keep it away from competing with the stronger slate of February film debuts). And, if anyone's counting, this marks only one of several Depp misfires in recent years; he's been unable to parlay his success as Sparrow into anything else worth seeing –
unless you count The Lone Ranger, Dark Shadows, and The Rum Diary as modern cinematic classics. To be fair, Mortdecai is actually better than the movies listed above, since Depp is willing to try just about anything to get a laugh. However, it's pretty odd to see such a fine actor forced into tongue-wagging, eye-rolling land; here, it's as if his art dealer character is a mix of John Cleese and “Curly” Joe DeRita as he runs amuck trying to recapture a stolen painting. It's a handsome cast that backs him, to be sure, but when you think of slapstick, witty jibes, and even such things as precisely timed comedic banter, the last people we'd think of would be Gwyenth Paltrow, Ewen McGregor, and the incredibly miscast Olivia Munn, whose stunning beauty seems to hide the fact that she has the thespian chops of, well, a G4 video game show host. There are some nifty pratfalls, some interesting attempts by the cast at accents, and some really beautiful locations, but all in all, this plays like what it's destined to be in 18 months: A Saturday afternoon filler feature on Channel 9 just before the college football game comes on.

ast month, the New York Jets introduced new general manager Mike Maccagnan and new head coach Todd Bowles. Maccagnan, who was in charge of college scouting for the Houston Texans, grew up in Hightstown, New Jersey, the mythical “halfway point” between New York and Philadelphia; he has the voice of a mellifluous radio broadcaster. Bowles realizes that he has a tough job ahead replacing the personable Rex Ryan, and seemed a bit stiff in the early Q&A exchanges at the press conference, but loosened up considerably when he was asked about his personality. “I have so many sides to me that I am like a male Sybil,” he said with a laugh that went over well with the press. Jets owner Woody Johnson said some interesting things that were not picked up by the dailies or electronic media, as he admitted that he knew that the 2014 Jets did not have a lot of talent, and that he might not have fired GM John Idzik and Rex Ryan
BOWLING
had they been on the same page, regardless of the team’s record. The fact that it was an open secret that neither man was enthralled with the other cost them both their jobs. The conventional wisdom was that the Jets were going after Doug Marrone, a Bronx native and the former head coach of Syracuse University, after he chose to opt out of his contract as Tradition Field head coach of the Buffalo In Port St. Lucie Bills. Unfortunately for Marrone, the Bills hired Rex Ryan to be their head coach, and there was no way that Johnson wanted to risk embarrassment if that coaching “trade” did not work out in his favor. From all accounts, Brooklyn Nets forward Mirza Teletovic is lucky to be alive. He told head coach Lionel Hollins that he was having trouble running up and down the court in a game against the Clippers in Los Angeles. Hollins immediately removed him from the game, and he was sent to an emergency room in a nearby hospital, where test results found numerous blood clots in his lungs. Apparently, Teletovic had been experiencing respiratory issues for a few days, according to teammate Bojan Bogdanovic. The lesson here is that if you feel any symptoms of anything unusual, don’t wait to seek medical attention. Even athletes, who train to be in top physical condition, are not exempt from unexpected maladies. It had been a long time since a basketball game
energized Madison Square Garden the way that the recent sold-out Duke versus St. John’s game did. Although the Red Storm were the nominal home
Ernie Banks team, it seemed as if there were a lot of Blue Devils fans that were loudly anticipating head coach Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski’s 1,000th win as a college head coach. In a back and forth affair, Duke pulled it out with a big late second half run, 77-68.

Top 15 Statements/Excuses That Should Be Banned: Now that we've reached the halfway point in the league bowling season, we hereby declare a moratorium on the following phrases from the sport, or else we may pull our hair out by May: “Hey, I bowled my average.” Throw him/her/it off the team at the end of the season (or the first half, if you still have the option). “(Insert bowling center name) doesn't oil the lanes right.” Hey, Jasper – you're such an expert, please show us how it's done. Then name the pattern. And tell us what kind of oil is used on bowling lanes. And while you're fixing the problem by laying down the oil “right,” apply it with a toothbrush. “I don't know what kind of oil they used tonight, but the lanes are different this week.” Must have been discarded from KFC, right? “Yeah, but pro bowlers have it easy. Look at the souped-up balls the use.” Say what? The pro shop has those same rocks, and you can walk in and buy one, too. “See the guy that bowled a 161 on the PBA on Sunday? I could have done that.” No, 45-year-old gray-haired guy who is also an accountant, you couldn't. “Get offa the lanes! Get offa the lanes!!!” Second-shift league bowlers, who then start bowling at a “too late” 9:13 pm, only to leave at 12:17 am regardless of when they started. “That's a 'weak' ball. I'd never throw a 'weak' ball.” Actually, the bowling ball industry is to blame for this one – describing balls with lower hook ratings as “weak.” Of course, those type of cores and coverstocks are exactly what some bowlers need, but since they sell for $150 instead of $220? Shh … oh, and while we're at it … Pro shop operator: “That 'weak” ball won't hit as hard as these over here.” The next time you hear that, ask to see the credentials of that “pro.” “It's $10 extra for a thumb slug.” Again, find another pro shop. “Never use a re-drilled ball.” Jeez, you're still there? “Our advanced ball cleaner contains special ingredients spe-

cially designed to remove belt marks, stains, and dirt.” Yep – sort of like the active ingredient in Windex, which is also used … in more than a few ball cleaners. And did you ever notice many ball cleaners don't list any ingredients at all on the labels? We can only assume the cleaner contains magic! “A bowler that good should really be in a men's scratch league.” You're in the same league, Betty Lou – what's that say about you? “He's a sandbagger.” We have no evidence that anyone, anywhere, has ever “sandbagged.” “He's only that good because he practices all the time.” Well, duh! “I can't make it to league this week; my (pet/spouse/boss) has an (ailment/birthday/bug up his or her butt).” Please refer to the first quote. We'll happily note all men's (275 and above and significant series), and women and youth bowlers' (200 and above and significant series) high scores. Alex The Great: Classy left-hander Alex Padmore of Jamaica won his third LIGBT tournament and the $1,000 champion's prize at AMF Wantagh Lanes on exceptionally rainy January 18. Padmore had actually failed to qualify for the finals by virtue of his 1 pm or 3 pm scores, but combined they were enough to be added to the finals as the wild card with a 1,399 six-game block. Landing in second place was Bobby Wunsch of East Meadow ($500), with George Williams of Jamaica ($300) finishing third ... Richie Rodriguez of Bronx, NY won the champion’s trophy and $1,000 at the LIGBT tournament on January 25 at AMF East Meadow Lanes ... Carl Worley of Staten Island won the Super Bowl Marathon at AMF Babylon Lanes. Learn more by visiting ligbtour.com.

Baseball lost a great ambassador in former Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks, who died two weeks ago at the age of 83. I never met Banks, but I did see him play. Mets fans will remember that he was part of the hated 1969 Cubs team managed by Leo Durocher that had little regard for the “Amazin’ Mets.” I remember NBC’s Tony Kubek interviewing Ernie Banks in the stands at Shea Stadium during the 1969 World Series as the Mets were upsetting the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. Banks said that while he wished that he could have been playing in that World Series, he admired what the Mets team had accomplished and was rooting for them. That was a classy thing for him to say.
We lost a terrific sportswriter two weeks ago as former New York Daily News and Newark Star-Ledger NFL reporter (as well as longtime Rockville Centre resident) Paul Needell died at the too-young age of 57. I met Paul in the early 1990s when I started covering the Jets’ summer training camp at Hofstra University. Paul welcomed me and he never “big leagued” me the way that a number of insecure sportswriters from the daily papers did (and some still do) to writers from smaller outlets. In a sports story that is every bit as weird as that of the New England Patriots deflating footballs, former New Jersey Devils Arena Entertainment president Richard Krezwick is suing New Jersey Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello for $2.3 million for falsely accusing him of mismanaging the Prudential Center. Krezwick claims that when he and other executives received their pink slips, Lamoriello took a seat in the lobby where the employees elevator was and laughed at those who were carrying boxes of their possessions out of the arena. I met Krezwick when he was a speaker at a Sports Business Journal conference in 2012, and I have met Lamoriello many times over the years. While I cannot obviously vouch for all of the merits of the lawsuit, my gut feeling is to believe Krezwick. The annual New York Times Travel Show took place recently at The Javits Center in New York City. Sports is finally getting its due as a driver of tourism, as Scranton, Pennsylvania promoted that
Photos:
the Yankees top minor league team plays in its new ballpark there, while The Lehigh Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau was promoting the just-opened PPL Arena, home to The Allentown Phantoms, the American Hockey League affiliate of The Philadelphia Flyers. The St. Lucie County (Florida) Tourism Bureau reminded everyone who passed by that it’s the spring training home of the New York Mets. A surprise was that Westchester tourism officials did not promote the Knicks’ new NBA Developmental League franchise in White Plains. Atlantic City officials are trying to lure a minor league team to its underutilized Sandcastle Stadium as a way of drawing tourists now that it’s apparent that casino gambling can no longer be relied upon to enrich the resort town’s economy. My sportswriting colleague from The Bronx News, Rich Mancuso, who many of you remember from his early Sunday morning wrestling segment on WFAN with Jody McDonald back in the day, has a new show on Internet radio. You can hear Mancuso host “Bases Are Covered” on inthemixxradio.com Tuesdays at 8 pm. Rich Your phone calls Mancuso will be welcomed.

What a ride it's been for the Florida native thus far: Two #1 hits in "A Little More Country Than That" and "Roll With It," another hit with "I Can't Love You Back," and almost half a million albums and more than two million singles sold in just a few years.

CLASSIC ROCK Dead Is Alive – Again: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Grateful Dead, the four surviving original members — Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir — will reunite at Chicago's Soldier Field, nearly 20 years to the day of the last Grateful Dead concert, which took place at the same venue. “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead" will occur over three nights on July 3, 4, and 5, marking the original members' last-ever performance together. The band will be joined by Trey Anastasio (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), and Bruce Hornsby (piano). The group will perform two sets of music each night. Ticketing and more information: Katrina

The new album features four of Toto's original members and the band's first album of new material since 2006’s Falling In Between. "This is opposite of going through the motions,” said Toto's Steve Porcaro. “We are treating this like it is Toto V, our follow-up to Toto IV. We just want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Be true to ourselves and make the best The Babys

Keyboardist David Paich added, "I think of Toto as a unit and a band that carries a responsibility when it goes out there in to the public consciousness. There is so much negativity and darkness that I think you have to be, as Quincy Jones, puts it, 'beams of light that blast through the darkness'." Toto and former Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald will coheadline a U.S. tour this fall.

Russell led the famous Cocker “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” tour, and later performed with George Harrison & Friends at The Concert For Bangladesh, one of the biggest events in the history of Madison Square Garden. Russell has also toured with Delaney & Bonnie And Friends, Edgar Winter, The New Grass Revival, and Willie Nelson. Still other music fans know Russell for his original song compositions, which have been covered by too many artists to list here. Two of his most famous tunes: “A Song For You” (covered and released by more than 40 artists, including Cocker, The Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Elkie Brooks, Amy Winehouse, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera); and “Delta Lady” (made famous during the Woodstock era by Cocker, and later recorded by a plethora of artists running the gamut of pop music styles).

For his efforts, Russell was inducted into both The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Recent times seem to have been as fruitful for Russell as his “heyday” was. COMEDY determined by voting viewers; more recently, Leno was installed in the Television Academy's Broadcast Hall of Fame. Laughter In The Lobby: Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts' "Laughter In The Lobby" continues on, with shows scheduled in the coming days and through the spring. "Bringing more standup comedy to the [Patchogue] Theatre has been a goal of mine since joining the theatre's Board of Directors," said Christopher Searles, board member of Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts. "The talent we're bringing in for 'Laughter In The Lobby' on a monthly basis is phenomenal, and it's hard to find a better night out anywhere for only $10." Each show will be hosted by "The World's Funniest Accountant," the Long Island-based Stevie G.B., who recently floored the audience with his uproarious New Year’s Eve performance at The Madison Theatre in Rockville Centre. Coming up: Friday, February 13 brings Stevie G.B., Joey Giarratano, and Sherry Davey; March 6 will feature Stevie G.B., John Santo, and JJay Boyd; April 16 will once again star Stevie G.B. in a show also featuring Paul Anthony and Eric Haft. General admission to "Laughter In The Lobby" is $10, which includes a beverage at the lobby bar. Doors open at 7 pm, with shows beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the box office the day of the show, or can be reserved by calling the box office at (631) 207-1313. For more information about the "Laughter In The Lobby" series, visit patchoguetheatre.com.

Jay Leno
The Chin Wins: After leaving NBC's “The Tonight Show,” comedy legend Jay Leno seems to be hitting the trail as a standup comic harder than he has in decades – and his current tour will bring him back to the area on Friday, March 13 at 7 pm at The NYCB Theatre At Westbury. Tickets, $149.50 and $59.50, are available online at ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000, and at the Westbury box office on Brush Hollow Road. For more information, visit thetheatreatwestbury.com. It goes without saying that Leno is the acclaimed former late night TV show host, an admired stand-up comedian, a best-selling children’s book author, a much-indemand corporate speaker, a TV and movie voice-over artist, a pioneering car builder and mechanic, and a philanthropist ... perhaps that’s why he’s widely characterized as “the hardest working man in show business.” Leno’s late night television ratings domination included more than two decades of “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” winning every consecutive quarter of his hosting sting over 19 years. After resuming hosting the 11:35 pm program following its one-time interruption, he made it once again the consistent and uninterrupted ratings leader for late night, once again leading all of the ensuing quarters handily, under the supervision throughout of executive producer Debbie Vickers. He has been honored by the Television Academy with an Emmy for “Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music Series.” “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” also took home the trophy for “Favorite Late Night Show” in the annual TV Guide Awards

Killed On The Basepaths: With the NFL's “Big Game” now part of sports history, here's an item that should bring warmth to the heart of embattled NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell, but frowns to the faces of the owners of the New York Mets and Yankees, thanks to The Harris Poll: Back in 1985, there was only a one-point difference between the percentage of American adults who followed at least one sport and considered pro football (24 percent) or baseball (23 percent) to be their favorite. At present, "America's pastime" remains in the past, as pro football ranks as America's favorite sport – now by a 16-point margin over baseball. Pro football is the top pick among 32 percent of sports fans, while baseball only garners "favorite" status among half as many Americans (16 percent). However, baseball enthusiasts can feel good that their sport of choice has managed a two percent point increase from last year's 14 percent, while football saw a three-point decrease from 2013's 35 percent – meaning the gap between the two narrowed by five points year-over-year. The final member of the six percent three-way-tie for America's fifth favorite sport is ice hockey, most beloved by one percent more of the population compared with last year (five percent). Why do we watch? When The Harris Poll asked Americans who enjoy watching sports what it is they actually enjoy about the experience, the largest percentage (63 percent) confirmed that they enjoy watching because of the skill involved. RHYTHM TRACKING
By Jimi LaLumia
formerly friendly music press saw me as a punching bag for their transphobic comments, or simply decided to pretend that I didn't exist, attempting to negate my punk rock legacy. Times are different now, but in many ways, not so different. I hope you find the strength to choose a path and share it in a public manner, for the trans community, but most importantly for yourself. You will find more support for your decision than you might imagine. – Jayne County
Trans Rocking: With the pop culture universe seemingly laser-focused on trans people these days – with much of that attention aimed in the Kardashians-crazed direction of Bruce Jenner – I am honored to serve as a conduit for long time fave and Rhythm Tracking pal Jayne County to share her thoughts on what may turn out to be the most talked-about transition in pop culture history. I can't think of anyone better qualified, as Wayne became Jayne in the late 70s before it was “fashionable,” and suffered in various ways for being “man enough to be a woman.” Here is Jayne County's open letter to Bruce Jenner: Bruce:
I have been following the media's coverage of your choices and image in the past few months with mixed reactions. I have the feeling that you might be torn as to what is your next move, or if there even will be a next move. Regardless, you should remain true to your own feelings, to who you really are, and bravely make whatever sort of statement you choose to make, in addition to the visual statements that are reaching the public eye on a regular basis, with some media outlets dismissing it all as “publicity.” I have been down this road in earlier, more unenlightened times. As Wayne County, performing on the 1970s NY/UK glam into punk scene, I performed in female garb, and my signature song became "(Are You) Man Enough To Be A Woman." I had my detractors, in the days before there were LGBT groups or organizations, and when even gay men frowned upon the shadow “trans” community; when I transitioned from Wayne to Jayne, the
More On Marky: A true survivor of the 70s NYC rock scene, Marky Ramone, who I remember as Marc Bell, has a new autobiography, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As A Ramone, out now via Simon & Shuster. Marc first came to my attention in the early 70s when I received a promo copy of Dust, a three piece heavy (very heavy) metal band for whom he drummed. After auditioning for The New York Dolls (they chose Jerry Nolan), Marc became the drummer for Wayne County & The Backstreet Boys, and then Richard Hell & The Voidoids before taking the drum seat in The Ramones when original member Tommy Ramone stepped down. What a resume! What stories Marc has to tell! The entire year-by-year history of the New York City rock scene (back when it mattered) unfolds before you in this book. Never mind the CBGB film – this is the movie that has to be made. Rock & roll fans need to get their hands on this book.

The Grave Jinglers Their Roots Lead To Riveting Original Rock
Who: The area-based band The Grave Jinglers will release their first full-length album, Reign Of The West, today (February 10). The first single is “The Open Road”; the album was produced by the band’s Doc Reinhart and Tom Happel at Vudu Studios in Port Jefferson. The new effort was mixed by Mike Watts and mastered by Tom Happel. The band also announced its new manager, Rose Coogan of Austin, TX, who is working with the group in planning a northeastern U.S. tour; dates will be posted on the band’s website once finalized. The Artists & Their Sound: From the band’s official bio: “The Grave Jinglers are a rock band based in the Long Island / New York City area. Their music is rooted in rock but colored by many other styles ... Their songs are full of characters, images, stories, philosophies, and heartbreak and are packed with as much drama and excitement as an old western film with themes that are relevant to the times and echo the sincerity of the original blues singers. “Their first release was in April 2013, a four-song EP entitled Midnight Sun. Not having the right pieces Artwork From The New CD Release in place at the time, the band’s founder, Doc Reinhart, a medical doctor and meticulous writer, completed the EP almost entirely on his own. Soon after, Charlie Rauh came in from Nashville and was the first person to sign on to the group. The drum chair was filled with the addition of Joe Rende, a local Long Island suspect, in August 2013. The search for a much needed, solid bass player came to a close early the following year with the addition of Martin Doykin from Queens via Bulgaria. “In a short time, the band has already had a song placed on The Disney Channel’s ‘Make Your Mark’ series, packed the house at The Vibe Lounge in Rockville Centre with Nashville’s Karla Davis (a finalist in the second season of ‘The Voice’), appeared on WBAI 99.5 FM out of New York City, played the Huntington Fall Festival, and is planning to tour the east coast with an eye towards Europe. “’Midnight Sun’ has been aired on over 50 radio stations and is currently receiving steady airplay in several European countries. The Grave Jinglers look forward to sharing a night with you, so bring your cowboy hats, whiskey, and dancing boots. To Learn More About The Artists: Log on to thegravejinglers.com.

“I’ve always been an artist,” explains Elise. “I want to perform, and I want to make people feel something. I want to hear them singing my lyrics back to me. I want to talk to people after shows and get to hear their life stories because they felt one of my songs was about them. I want to inspire a little girl like me to believe she can do anything. I want to change people’s lives. That is, after all, what music is for.” Connect with Lily Elise at Twitter, Facebook, andYouTube, and on her own website, lilyelise.com.

Featured Artist – Lily Elise: Generating Huge Interest
Make way for Lily Elise, the vivacious young singer who’s been making a splash since America first met her three years ago. The Bay Area native has announced plans to release a new, five-song EP, Taken, in the coming weeks. The first single, “Generator,” was issued in November, and “Suitcases,” the follow-up, is also out. “The songs on this EP are a culmination of two years of hard work,” said Elise. “They tell a story of struggling to find myself in the midst of an unknown career path and a destructive relationship, from beginning to end. They are my babies and while I’m terrified to push them out of the nest, I’m also extremely proud and excited to watch them fly.” Over the past two years, Elise has been writing, recording and collaborating with other musicians as she prepares for the release of Taken. Most recently, Elise lent her vocals to Dillon Francis’ “Hurricane,” a feature track from his new EP, currently available for streaming.
Eddie Murphy:
In A Serious Reggae Mood
VPAL Music, VP Records' subsidiary label and distribution arm for reggae music, has teamed with Eddie Murphy to release the new single, “Oh Jah Jah,” now available everywhere. This song is not the first time Murphy has dabbled in reggae music; “Oh Jah Jah” follows his 2013 collaboration, “Red Light” featuring Snoop Lion. Murphy penned and co-produced “Oh Jah Jah,” which was recorded and mixed at Soul Mountain Studios in Beverly Hills. Ralph Hawkins Jr. and Trenten Gumbs also had a hand in the production. This isn't the first time the comedian and actor (“Saturday Night Live”) has dabbled in music; his Rick James-produced single “Party All The Time” went all the way to #2 in Billboard.

Black Fast:
The hot metal outfit Black Fast recently entered Mana Studios in Florida with veteran producer Erik Rutan to begin work on their debut LP for Long Island's eOne Music. Known for his work with Hate Eternal, Six Feet Under, and Cannibal Corpse, Rutan was an easy choice for the band. "We can't wait to work with Erik Rutan! Erik is a legend." said frontman Aaron Akin. "Excited doesn't even do justice to the mind frame we are in. I've followed his work for over a decade, and he's been at it for way longer than that. I mean, it's f***ing Erik Rutan!" "I am very excited to work with Black Fast," Rutan said. "They have a very unique style with a ton of energy, creativity, and a certain aggressiveness and fire rarely seen in this day and age of music." Black Fast announced their record deal with eOne Music and plan on releasing the effort later this year. The yet to be titled LP will be the band's followup to their highly buzzed about self-released Starving Out The Light. The band is comprised of Aaron Akin, Ryan Thompson, Trevor Johanson, and Ross Burnett.
