50 Shades Of Grey
Starring Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, Jennifer Ehle, Luke Grimes, Marcia Gay Harden, Max Martini, Eloise Mumford, Dylan Neal, Rita Ora, Victor Rasuk, Callum Keith Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson Universal
As we mention here far too often as we concentrate on “popcorn films” more often than serious fare: A lot of movies are simply critic proof. This rush-released adaption of E.J. James’ runaway best-seller attracted a vast, mostly female audience that took in nearly $93 million during its first weekend in release; Universal cannily opened the movie on Valentine’s Day weekend to assure curious, horny couples would swarm box offices. Other than this film assuring that its charismatic lead actress, Dakota Johnson, will be heard from often in the future, this isn’t a good film, unfortunately; as we are late to the dance, we’ll point to sites such as Rotten Tomatoes, where the compiled reviews are overwhelmingly negative. While the performances are uniformly fine, director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s ham-fisted, almost comical direction of the movie’s intimate scenes ultimately ruins the entire production. Yet, is is heartening – to use a Valentine’s Day pun – that a film that centers around sex and intimacy is drawing such attention. No, we’re not saying everybody in America should log on to PornHub and have at it; the point here is that films about real people and the personal choices they make can be more than just for titilation. The sexual aspect of life can make for riveting drama that can stick to the head and heart, if depicted
properly. Which returns us to the swinging 1970s, the advent of the so-called “sexual revolution.” While early 1970s X-rated fare such as Deep Throat, The Devil In Miss Jones, and Behind The Green Door attracted curious mainstream crowds – and in many cases, the demand to see the films was so strong that they were actually shown in traditional movie houses – the end result was that more serious adult fare was depicted in mature, if not enlightening ways. Last Tango In Paris in 1972

featured aging Marlon Brando and young Maria Schneider in Bernardo Bertolucci’s stark film that managed to be both romantic and erotic while pushing the boundaries of explicit material. Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke starred in 1986’s 9 1/2 Weeks, a frank look at an affair that, shall we say, was pretty creative in more ways than one. The film tanked in the U.S., but was an international sensation that eventually led to two sequels as well a string of parodies that were seen by more people than actual viewed the source material. Given America’s usually repressive mores, it is utterly positive that film that focuses on sexuality from a woman’s perspective has become such an out-of-the-box sensation. At the very least, 50 Shades Of Grey treats its characters with respect and dignity. Given the way Hollywood usually reduces sex to juvenile jokes such as the ones found in garbage films such as Porky’s or Sex Tape, it’s a breath of fresh (albeit quite hot) air.

The Wedding Ringer Starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Affion Crockett, Cloris Leachman Directed by Jeremy Garelick Sony/Screen Gems
Arriving at the mallplex; reading the poster: Who's that, is that Chris Ro – oh, gosh, no, it's Kevin Hart, who somehow has turned being chronically shrill, loud, and annoying into filmland leading man status. Do I have to go, really, honey? What else is playing? Well, at least there's Josh Mostel … oh, gosh, no – it's Josh Gad, who somehow turned a secondary role on a failed Kelsey Grammer sitcom into a role in The Book Of Mormon, a show that succeeds on the strength of its writing, not its cast, but now we have to deal with him … oh, never mind. What's showing on screen eight? Honey, you still want to see this? Oh, well at least there's Christina Applegate … oh, gosh, no, it's suddenly hyphenated Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, who can't decide if she's Miss April or a “comic actress.” Oh, gosh, no. If all this seems like a recipe for disaster, well, gang, you oughta know by now: Welcome to January, February, and early March in movie land, where studios release films they know aren't worthy of summer status, hoping upon hope that one of them sticks at the box office. Sure, we had American Sniper this season, but we've also received Taken 3, Project Almanac, The Boy Next Door, The Loft, Strange Magic, Mortdecai, and on the list goes. Not much to see; at least The Wedding Ringer is sort of like a “Saturday Night Live” sketch stretched out to an hour and 41 minutes, and watching it beat being caught in one of the 10 ice storms we've had lately, so into the warm, mostly empty theater we went. Thanks, honey. According to legend, the draft of this film bounced
around a slew of movie companies for years (“Hey, we gotta 'nother Wedding Crashers!”) before it finally got made. In this impossible to believe scenario, we have schlubby Doug (played by Gad so broadly that you can't help but despise the simpering wuss goof), who is about to marry bitchy Gretchen (Cuoco-Sweeting) … wait, hold it. She's been on the cover of Maxim and she's going to marry a guy who looks like a melting ice cream sundae and whines a lot? Just as hard to believe: Doug hires wily Jimmy Callahan (Hart), a smooth operator who is a “professional best man for hire.” Huh? Oh yeah, we know someone who did that. We also won the lottery, and have a dog that speaks fluent Swedish. You can guess what this is: Pasty, blubbery Doug
hires super-hip Jimmy, and the odd couple gets in all sorts of “wacky” scrapes – not to mention ugly character assassinations, misogyny, tasteless male member jokes, old people jokes (ill-fated Cloris Leachman deserves so much better), and so it goes, all delivered without an ounce of wit, truth, or warmth. Hart remains Hart, who is horrid at virtually everything he touches, yet keep failing upward because he can say “f**k” a lot with a rat-a-tat delivery. He’s about a funny as three-car pileup. After watching this, a sad and sobering thought kept creeping into our minds: We haven't seen a good comedy in ages. If the art form eventually dies, The Wedding Ringer can be counted as one of the 2015 films that put the nails in its coffin.

ith all the hoopla 2015 NBA All-Star Game Weekend behind us, it’s time to get back to the dreary reality of our local teams. While the New York Knicks are atrocious and the Brooklyn Nets have roughly double the amount of wins that their neighbors do, one gets the feeling that the longrange outlook is better for the Knicks. Their president and general manager, Phil Jackson, is well aware that the current roster – with the exception of forward Carmelo Anthony – is disposable. Jackson’s dealing away Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith to the Cleveland Cavaliers for basically bupkis was a tacit admission that subtraction was just as important as addition for the Knicks’ season. As hard as it is to imagine, the Nets have bigger problems in many ways. Nets GM Billy King badly mortgaged the team’s future by trading for veteran forward Joe Johnson, and later for Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry. The net result was that the Atlanta Hawks, who have the best record in the

NBA’s Eastern conference as well as the rebuilding Boston Celtics, basically have the Nets top draft picks for four out of the upcoming five years. Garnett can still play, but only at reduced minutes; Pierce only played a year in Brooklyn before leaving for the Washington Wizards; and Perry, once one of the most feared three-point shooters in the league, lost his touch once he wore a Nets uniform and was dealt to the Sacramento Kings. I asked King if he was concerned that he was mortgaging the team’s future by trading a lot of tomorrow for a very small window of opportunity today when he made the deal in June 2013; King concurred with that assessment, but also stated he believed that owner Mikhail Prokhorov would give him an unlimited checkbook Kevin and would not be hampered by such pedestrian concerns as budgets Garnett or NBA salary caps. Of course, back then the ruble was strong as Russian oil prices, but things haven’t been so rosy however in Putin-land since the Red Army attacked Ukraine. In retrospect, King’s headline-grabbing trade with the Boston Celtics now looks as smart as Seattle Seahawks’ head coach Pete Carroll’s decision to pass on the Patriots’ one-yard line with 20 seconds to go in the Super Bowl. I finally got to watch the New York Islanders play in person for the first time this season, as I ventured back to Philadelphia on a bone-chilling night to witness the Islanders defeat the Flyers 3-2 in a

This was a big game as the Isles had lost three straight, and it looked as if the hockey Gods weren’t going to be kind to them as Mason stopped countless Josh Bailey breakaway shots. Unfortunately for most of February they have been without their goaltender, Henrik Steve Weatherford Lundqvist, whose throat was pelted by a slap shot from Carolina Hurricanes center Brad Malone. Despite the obligatory February cold and snow, spring can’t be too far away when Topps releases its Series 1 baseball cards. Derek Jeter will receive his last card, and there will be one issued for Ernie Banks. In a creative move, Topps will issue baseball cards of celebrities who threw out first pitches at stadiums last year. Rapper and actor Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who infamously threw a ball somewhere in the direction of Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud last summer, is among those honored. New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford was one of the honorees at the 35th annual Thurman Munson Dinner this year. The event pays tribute to the late Yankees captain who was killed in an August 1979 plane crash, and also raises money for AHRC, a non-profit that enriches the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Weatherford told the
press that he suffers both from Obsessive Lucie, Florida to file stories on David Wright’s Compulsive Disorder and Attention Deficit vow to regain his All-Star form and shortstop Hyperactivity Disorder, and that is why the Wilmer Flores’s promise to prove his detractors Munson Award meant so much to him: “My wrong. parents did not start me on prescription medicines, Wherever Kevin Kernan goes, suntan lotion but rather enrolled me in various youth sports flows! Ojeda was always a straight shooter and didn’t sugarcoat losses, though he would occasionally get a bit too effusive over wins. Nelson Figueroa, who at press time was name Ojeda’s successor, had two pitching stints with the Mets and is an excellent communicator. His matinee idol looks should attract more female fans to Mets telecasts. I have long been a fan of New York Post sports columnist Kevin Kernan, and I have to admit that I am more than a tad envious of him as well. Not only is he a great writer (and a terrific person to boot, who unlike a lot of sportswriters from New York dailies doesn’t look down on those of us from smaller outlets), but he knows how to get out of the New York area winter chill better than any other sports columnist who ever lived. In December, Kevin went the Dominican Republic resort town of Punta Cana to talk with Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, then flew to Curacao to interview new Nelson Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius. Kevin beat Figueroa nearly every sportswriter down to Port St.

Wee Hours Wrestling: In a move that must be costing the regional pro wrestling promotion a ton of money, New Jersey’s Pro Wrestling Syndicate (PWS) is leasing time on WLNY 10/55 each week at the rather odd time of 4:30 am each Sunday (or Saturday night, if you prefer). The New Jersey-based wrestling organization merges appearances by stars such as Jushin “Thunder” Liger, Ashley Massaro, Katarina Leigh, Kevin Nash, and Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka with its own young wrestlers such as Kevin Matthews, Chris Payne, Tessa Blanchard (daughter of NWA legend Tully Blanchard), Fallah Bahh, and many others. It's typically what one would expect of an indie wrestling promotion of 2015 – not the best sound and visuals, tasteless angles and gimmicks, comically overwrought announcing – yet, the overall production rises far above such other failed attempts to go “wide” such as NWA Wildside and various ECW wannabes. Is PWS's attempt at TV a success? It's hard to say; the bible of the sport, Wrestling Observer Newsletter, recently reported a recent edition of the show failed to score even a fraction of a single ratings point, which can't be uplifting news, but things can obviously change. Get In The Swim: Fans of the annual Victoria's Secret TV specials, take heed: Get ready for summer with “The Victoria's Secret Swim Special,” which debuts Thursday night (February 26) at 10 pm on CBS. This special follows the brand’s “Angels” as they land in Puerto Rico to shoot a swimwear campaign. And there's music: joining the supermodels on the island will be Maroon 5 and Juanes. On the special, Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge, Behati Prinsloo, Alessandra Ambrosio, Elsa Hosk, Martha Hunt, Jasmine Tookes, Stella Maxwell, Joan Smalls, and Jac Jagaciak will talk about shooting in Puerto Rico, and “the significance of VS Swim to their lives and careers, and what drives them,” according to a press release. We'll take a guess at what “drives” them: Being paid bales of money to parade around in

Bay Shore Buffoons: One of the most popular locally based comedy events is The YMCA Boulton's Center's “Big Laughs In Bay Shore” series, which returns on Friday, February 27 at 8 pm. Tickets, $20, are on sale now; log on to boultoncenter.org for tickets and more information. What sets this series apart from many others is the level of standups that these theater events attract. On the bill for February 27 is Joe DeVito, who probably has made more area club and theater appearances than you've had hot dinners. His resumé includes two appearances on the just-gone but much-missed

Victorias Secret Swimsuit Show designer bikinis, perhaps? For those who can't wait, early stills from the special can be found on Twitter at #VSSwimSpecial, @VictoriasSecret, and #OwnTheBeach. Did SI Go Too Low?: It seems Sport Illustrated’s “Swimsuit Issue” causes a hubub every year – and that’s the case in 2015 because of the cover of Hannah Davis featuring, shall we say, the least amount of bikini bottom coverage possible. Prior to the magazine's February 9 release, Twitter exploded with both outraged and titilated comments. Reportedly, The National Center on Sexual Exploitation – which, like other blue-nosed organizations, is also asking for a boycott of the new 50 Shades Of Gray film – asked major retailers to remove the what it called “pornographic” magazine from end caps and checkout lines.

This veteran five-piece band, comprised of stellar area musicians, continues to be one of the biggest draws among cover bands in the area. Performing contemporary rock, dance rock, and classic rock, the group's storied lineup is comprised of Rob Cunningham, Diane Wagner, Greg Spisak, Keith Miller, and Rob Fitzpatrick. That's not all at Farrell's on this evening: The Mystic keeps the classic rock music going at 10 pm.

Yes, here it is, rockers – the first area tribute band to Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods … just kidding! Fleetwood Macked performs all the classic hits you can ask from a band that pays homage to Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, and company, including “Go Your Own Way,” “You Make Lovin' Fun,” “Rhiannon,” and too many more than we have room to list here.

Favorites & Legends Rock On
At press time, U2 had added a seventh (that's not a typo) show to its summer string of concerts as Madison Square Garden in New York City; the new date is July 30, but act fast as the first six concerts sold out in a virtual flash … Longtime Long Island favorite Vanilla Fudge is set to release its first album in many a moon, Spirit Of '67, on March 3 on the Purple Pyramid label. The album consists of the current verison of the band – original members Carmine Appice, Mark Stein, and Vince Martel, with Pete Bremy on bass – tackling many of the biggest hits of 1967 with their own re-imagined versions of “The Ringo Letter,” “Ruby Starr Tuesday,” “The Tracks Of My Tears,” “I Can See For Miles,” and other classics (as well as one new song written by Stein.) The band seems buoyant about the new album; Carmine Appice declared it "the best album we've done since our very first album, with great vocal arrangements and instrumental performances from everyone in the band." "Spirit Of '67 is a record that I'm proud of,” echoed Stein. “The success of Vanilla Fudge has always been based on our interpretations of songs by great artists. Our style of classic and symphonic rock lives large on this effort, and the performances and arrangements I would hope will be enjoyed by old and new fans alike." Vanilla Fudge will co-headline The NYCB Theatre In Westbury on April 26 with Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals … Todd Rundgren will release his 25th solo album, Global, on April 6.

Jim Sabella and his staff at Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights – described as a “classic studio” by the audio site SonicScoop – welcomed the return of Jason Waters to the famed national recording facility. Waters posted a video of his experiences at Sabella on Instagram (pictured here). This singer/ songwriter specializes in his own blend of rock, roots, folk, and Americana, and is gearing up with new sounds for 2015. Waters, formerly of the duo Stilettos-n-Steel, released his previous EP, See This Through, in 2011 on Waterfalls Records. The disc scored rave reviews (some compared his original tunes to Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen) and good airplay; and it seems a sure bet that a lot

t doesn’t take much go get the Boston-based rock band Dropkick Murphys excited – and here’s something their fans will be excited about: an unprecidented two-night stint on March 3 and 4 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington as part of their “Celtic Punk Invasion Tour.” Opening will be The Mahones and Blood Or Whiskey; tickets are on sale now via ticketmaster.com or paramountny.com. This is an energetic, classic band that is still touring on the strength of its 2013 studio album, Signed And Sealed In Blood. The album is their second with producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Old Crow Medicine Show), which was recorded at Boston's Q Division Studios and mixed by Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes). "We had such a great time writing our last album Going Out In Style, we were excited to get back into the studio right away,"

DaRosa (banjo, bouzouki, mandolin, harmonica, vocals), Matt Kelly (drums, vocals), James Lynch (guitar, vocals), and Scruffy Wallace (bagpipes, tin whistles). Their music is universal – songs for the common man, about common things, that come together with such fury and infectious melody that everyone within earshot is struck straight. Dropkick Murphys, as much as any of the “punk” or “blue collar” labels they’ve earned, have made a serious mark as songwriters. They are on the same quest as their beloved Woody Guthrie, or their buddy, Bruce Springsteen: How to get that big truth to come out of the speakers in a way that people will feel in their bones.

t this juncture, not many artists can say they have performed at the still-new Space At Westbury twice – but among the first that can is Los Lobos, who returns to the venue on Thursday, March 7 at 8 pm. Alejandro Escovedo will open; for tickets, log on to ticketmaster.com; for information, log on to thespaceatwestbury.com or call (516) 283-5566. Los Lobos were already East L.A. neighborhood legends, Sunset Strip regulars, and a Grammy Award winning band (Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance) by the time they recorded their major label debut, How Will The Wolf Survive?, in 1984. Although the album’s name and title song were inspired by a National Geographic article about real life wolves in the wild, the band — David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin — saw parallels with their struggle to gain mainstream rock success while maintaining their Mexican roots. Perez, the band’s drummer, once called their powerhouse mix of rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues, and traditional Spanish and Mexican music “the soundtrack of the barrio.” Three decades, two more Grammys, a worldwide smash single (“La Bamba”) and thousands of rollicking performances across the globe later, Los Lobos is surviving quite well, and still jamming with the same raw intensity as they had when they began in that garage in 1973. The band chronicles a key moment of their expansive journey on Disconnected In New York City, a dynamic live album that marks the band’s 40th anniversary and launches

their new association with 429 Records. As per the literal meaning of its title, Disconnected In New York City sets itself apart from Los Lobos’ other acclaimed live recordings (most notably, 2005’s Live At
The Fillmore) by stripping down the instrumentation for a mostly acoustic affair. Lozano, who drives the grooves with his bass and also plays the deep-bodied Mexican six-string acoustic bass called the guitarron, says,“It’s funny because when the venue hired us, they specifically requested that we do something acoustic to fit its smaller dinner house vibe. The idea popped into our heads to ask them if we could record it and they were cool with that. “We’re well known for our electric, high energy performances but we’ve done acoustic stuff for certain smaller auditorium tours,” he said. “Playing these songs acoustically makes them feel more intimate. We notice that when you play softer and quieter, the audience tends to pay attention to everything we’re doing. When you play rock, they’re thinking more about rhythm than melodies and lyrics, but playing them this way allows for more subtle elements of the
et us ask you if you can think of two R&B vocal groups that have assembled more Top 40 hits than the legendary Temptations and Four Tops – so imagine what a show featuring both groups will be like. For non-stop classics, we're hard-pressed to think of a better value than the show at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury on Saturday, March 7 at 8 pm. Tickets are on sale now, but make your plans early; tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000, and at the Westbury box office. THE TEMPTATIONS & THE FOUR TOPS
Motown Legends Again Fill Westbury With Hits
So now, get ready for a pair of lists that are almost impossible to believe: Here is the complete list of Top 40 U.S. Billboard hits of Motown favorites The Four Tops, elected to The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990: “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “Ask The Lonely,” “I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch),” “It's The Same Old Song,” “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over),” “Reach Out I'll Be There,” “Standing In The Shadows Of Love,” “Bernadette,” “7-Rooms Of Gloom,” “You Keep Running Away,” “If I Were A Carptenter,” “Walk Away Renee,” “Still Water (Love),” “It's All In The Game,” “River Deep Mountain High (with The Supremes),” “Just Seven Numbers (Can Straighten Out My Life),”
The Temptations: Now & Then “MacArthur Park (Part 2),” “Keeper Of The Castle,” “Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got,” “Are You Man Enough,” “Sweet Understanding Love,” “When She Was My Girl,” and “Indestructible.” Ready for another? Here's a list of U.S. of just the Top 10 Billboard hits for The Temptations, who received the “Lifetime Achievement” Grammy Award: “My Girl,” “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep,” “(I Know) I'm Losing You,” “All I Need,” “You're My Everything,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “Cloud Nine,” “I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (with The Supremes),” “Run Away Child, Running Wild,” “I Can't Get Next To You,” “Psychedelic Shack,” “Ball Of Confusion,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was A
songs to stand out.” Berlin is Los Lobos’ saxophonist, flutist, and harmonica player who met the band while still with seminal L.A. rockers The Blasters. He joined the group after performing on and co-producing (with T-Bone Burnett) their breakthrough 1983 EP …And A Time To Dance. Though he wasn’t jamming with the others way back in the “Krypton days” (as Perez calls them) in the barrio garage, Berlin felt it was important to find a special way to mark his cohorts’ 40th year – just as they had done on their 30th by inviting special guests (Dave Alvin, Bobby Womack, Elvis Costello, Mavis Staples) to be part of their 2004 date The Ride. “Trying to figure out a way to acknowledge 40 years as a band is harder than you might think,” he said. Today, their loyal fans believe Los Lobos is as good as any time in their history; the second headlining show at The Space certainly cements that opinion.
Rollin' Stone,” “Masterpiece,” and “The Motown Song (with Rod Stewart).” And consider this: Other legendary hits such as “Get Ready” (#29), “Aint Too Proud To Beg” (#13), and “I Could Never Love Another” (#13) didn't even chart in the Top 10, despite their classic status years later. Granted, given the constraints of a single concert, not every one of these classic hits will be performed. However, after reading these lists … can you think of a good reason not to go, if only to get swept away in the memories? For those who are into the history of these legendary R&B supergroups – or those simply curious to see who remains in the bands – here are the current rosters for both hitmakers: The Temptations: Otis Williams (the group’s founder), Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Joe Herndon, and Bruce Williamson. The Four Tops: Abdul "Duke" Fakir (original member), Lawrence "Roquel" Payton, Jr., Ronnie McNeir, and Harold "Spike" Bonhart.

Freekbass Serious Musicality
Who: Freekbass is the surging, Long Island-based “funktronica” artist who is gaining national notoriety for his skills and sound. His new album, Everybody’s Feelin’ Real, was recorded by Duane Lundy (My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Ben Sollee) and features members from Bootsy’s Rubberband, Parliament/Funkadelic, and The Trey Anastasio Band (catch a clip from “Victoria Thunder,” a track from the new album, at YouTube). Freekbass hosted his official CD release party for the effort in January at the popular jazz and blues club Treme in Islip. The Artist & His Sound: From the artist’s official bio: “With organic, bass-centric sounds mixing with forward-looking soundscapes, Everybody's Feelin' Real finds Freekbass bridging the gap between classic funk and the future of the groove. Aided by the vision of producer and engineer Duane Lundy, this album lives in the rawness of the earth while traveling to the future of worlds yet to be discovered. Inspired by the inventiveness and massive sonics of David Bowie, the 10 songs on Everybody's Feelin' Real celebrate a sound while simultaneously pushing the envelope of what it is and what it can be. Funk is only a part of it. “Accompanying him on the album are Joel ‘Razor Sharp’ Johnson from Bootsy's Rubberband, Big Bamn from Bootsy Collin's Funk Unity Band, Chip Wilson from George Clinton's Parliament/ Funkadelic, Les Claypool collaborator Skerik, Jennifer Hartswick from The Trey Anastasio Band, Kim Manning, and percussionist David Farris. “In addition to albums, Freekbass has released three instructional DVDs: Learn Funk Bass With Freekbass, Level 1 & Level 2, and 50 Freekbass Licks You Must Know. He also gave a master class at this year’s London Bass Guitar Show (and appeared with a number of great bassists on the cover of Bass Guitar Magazine). “’I feel with music it is your duty to release not just albums, but to let other people gain any insight into what got you where you are,’ said Freekbass. ’Plus, I have personally become such a better player since I have started instruction.’ Knowing he has as much to learn as he has to teach, Freekbass has played in a number of different projects with the likes of Bootsy Collins, Phish’s Mike Gordon, DJ Spooky, Buckethead, Bernie Worrell, Kelly Richey, Adam Deitch, Steve Molitz, and many more artists.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to freekbass.com; he is about to embark on a national tour beginning in March to support the new album.

The Grammys: There are three things you can always count on: Death, taxes, and The Grammy Awards. The event was very busy this year, so we'll stick to the moments that stuck out to me; the event itself is attempting to steer through the changes in pop culture and technology, which have completely turned the industry upside down and on its side. The master of publicity, Kanye West was, of course, all the talk during and after the show. He did an outstanding performance of his last single, joined Rihanna and Paul Mc Cartney on their current threeway hit, and then proceeded to engage in another of his famous outbursts, once again on behalf of Beyoncé. When it was announced that Beck had won the Album Of The Year award, Kanye started walking to the stage, then turned and went back to his seat. For a moment, everyone expected a rehash of his Taylor Swift tantrum a few years ago; he waited until after the show to verbally attack Beck – then a day or so later, seemingly took it all back. He is brilliant at the publicity angle of stealing the moment, becoming the talked-about water cooler

subject matter for everyone in the days after. Sam Smith won the night, and deservedly so. He won the most awards, went right back to #1 on the Amazon sales chart by the next morning, and showed everyone what a 2015 pop star looks and sounds like. Openly gay, he serves as a counterpoint to the gay son on the new Fox series "Empire," who apparently is heading back to the closet for fear of hurting his recording career. Smith shows no such fear; it's a new century, people, let's move on and get over it (by the way, I do love "Empire," or, as I call it, "Black Dynasty"; can't wait for the soundtrack album to be released). I loved the old and new team-ups: Ed Sheeran with Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra; Jesse J and Tom Jones; the Grammy-

winning album team of Tony Bennett and Lady GaGa; and the aforementioned McCartney teamup. This is how the young learn about those who came earlier; the new generation had no idea who Missy Elliot was when she joined Katy Perry at the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, but once they saw her, three of her classic singles zoomed up the iTunes chart into the Top 10. There are forces of nature, such as Madonna, who introduced her new single and held her own with the young ones quite admirably, with no need to duet with anyone. I enjoyed this year's show, but I still mourn the dearth and apparent death of rock & roll; maybe next year.

Her Lucky Number Is ‘8’
Another Family Reunion
Not That Spirit, Gramps:
Annalisa Tornfelt, the Alaska-raised musician best known as singer and fiddle player for Black Prairie, grabbed her “Black Beauty” Arch Kraft guitar and an analog 8-track to record her new solo album in just eight hours. The Number 8 will be released March 10 on Woodphone Records. “I asked Annalisa to play a few fiddle tunes with me, which soon flipped to her picking up a guitar and singing Hank Williams,” says her Black Prairie bandmate, Chris Funk. “It was simple, but it was stunning. It's those moments when she grabs the all-too familiar guitar and sings a song that you realize your bandmate and friend has the unique gift and power to make the weight of the world lift for three minutes.” “In Alaska, I was raised on classical music, Disney, and Chuck Mangione's Children Of Sanchez,” said Tornfelt, who began playing bluegrass decades ago. She recently discovered rock when Black Prairie asked her to sing “The Song Remains The Same.” Some of the songs on The Number 8 go back 10 years; the mysterious third instrument on the track is the nyckelharpa, a Swedish harp formerly owned by Peter Buck. “The sounds she coaxed from the wood and strings seemed to put her in a trance,” said Scott McCaughey of The Minus 5. “She even taught us how to spell it.”
One of New York City's hottest roots groups at the moment, Spirit Family Reunion, is set to release its sophomore album, Hands Together, on April 14. The 12-song set was mixed by Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Uncle Tupelo) and produced by the band in Coney Island. After more than 250 live shows in support of its debut disc, Spirit Family Reunion has performed at consecutive Newport Folk Festivals as well as Stage Coach, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and more festivals, as well as sharing the stage on tour with Levon Helm, Alabama Shakes, Dr. Dog, The Felice Brothers, Trampled By Turtles, and Hurray For The Riff Raff. Before the album release, the band will support The Felice Brothers for a series of New York State dates. Get concert dates and more information at spiritfamilyreunion.com.

Two Breakout Tracks
Leon Bridges:
Dierks Bentley
The two breakout tracks from soul revivalist and R&B singer/songwriter Leon Bridges, “Coming Home” and “Better Man,” have been released and can also now be streamed on Vevo. Bridges' soul, R&B and gospel-influenced songs and vocals have earned him comparisons to Sam Cooke and Percy Sledge. Bridges, a choreographer with a background in dance, has sold out many of his live shows, including one at New York City’s Mercury Lounge on February 17. For more: leonbridges.com.
Back On The Road
Dierks Bentley: Country star Dierks Bentley's Leon 40-city Bridges summer tour will kick off June 5 in Raleigh, NC, and continue through the summer; his friends Kip Moore, Maddie & Tae, and Canaan Smith stack the lineup. "There have been tours in my career that I thought would be impossible to top, and the past 12 months certainly rank as some of the best and most fun nights of my life," said Bentley. "I expect 2015 to beat all of it. I've really loved having three other artists out there with us … just more fun on and off the stage and knowing that the fans are getting more music for their money is important to me. Kip, Maddie & Tae, and Canaan are three of the hottest rising artists out there right now, and I feel fortunate to be spending the summer with them …. No one is going to have more fun this summer than us!" Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine returns as tour sponsor of Bentley's “2015 Sounds Of Summer” tour. For more information and for a full list of upcoming tour dates, visit dierks.com; locally, Bentley will performat the inaugural Farmburough Festival on Randall's Island in New York City on June 27; tickets for the country fest are on sale now.

Motley Crue:
It appears that Motley Crue's seemingly endless “farewell tour” really is coming to a close: The group has announced its final performance will be December 31 at The Staples center in Los Angeles. After 34 years performing together, the 2015 leg of the “Final Tour” will see the band play Japan this month, then in Australia and New Zealand in the spring. In June, Motley Crue will say farewell to the European festival circuit with three performances before taking their show back to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico this summer for 34 final North American concerts. "In some of the cities, we could only reach a fraction of the fans who wanted to come see us play last year because of ticket demand, so we're coming back to those places to bring them our full production including the Cruecifly drum coaster, as well as all pyro and every other bell and whistle,” said bassist Nikki Sixx.
