Performance Right Before Your Very Eyes: Masters Of Illusion Live NYCB Theatre At Westbury

In these supposedly sophisticated times, can “pick a card, any card” still draw as an entertainment format? If recent months are any indication, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Magic is everywhere; Broadway isn't even immune – a show called the Illusionists: Witness The Impossible ran at The Marquis Theatre a couple of months back, and pretty much sold out its limited run. As well, the touring edition of Masters Of Illusion Rick (based on the TV show of the same name) sold out Thomas Long Island's famed theater in the round on a frigid late February night. The film that knocked 50 Shades Of Grey from the top of the box office charts actually deserved to, as Focus, Will Smith's fifth attempt as a “comeback,” is actually far sexier – and entertaining – than the highly hyped adaptation of E.L. James’ book. While not a classic by any means, this new drama is sizzling entertainment for adults – just the tonic before the CRASH! BAM! BOOM! of spring action films takes over the multiplexes. Simply put: This film is about con men, and the lengths they will go to for a score – even as the risk of ruin. They’re all here: low rent con artists, card sharks, sleazy pick pockets, and thieves; those who live their lives looking for their next mark. In that light, the film probably would have worked a little better looking more into the techniques and mindset that makes a person want to become, as they used to say, riff raff, but there’s just enough of an “inside baseball” view of their game that makes the movie compelling. Smith, after a string of box office duds – the horrific vanity project After Earth two years back is a regret that will take a long time to get over – but

here, his character is charming and understated, and possibly the best acting of a career that to date hasn’t really called for a lot except for cracking wise (which is why his Men In Black films still rank as his most entertaining). The real story here, however, is Margot Robbie, who after this performance and her supporing role in The Wolf Of Wall Street

simply has to rank as the hot new sex symbol in film land; every time she appears in frame, the lens fairly crackles – and she has actual chops as well as beauty. pring training is not a time when discerning baseball fans take on-field action seriously. Generally, the only things worth paying attention to are injuries and the competition for the last outfield, infield, and relief pitching roster spot on a given team. This year, a new factor has been added, as Major League Baseball has instituted an NBA-style shot clock to try to shorten the playing time of games.

orga's Big Moment: This writer never likes to refer to himself in the first person in our column, but in this case, I must break from the format: I was present on March 12 as a member of the Thursday Early Mixed League at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park when I witnessed one of the most remarkable accomplishments I've ever seen in a lifetime that includes bowling in leagues and tournaments and attending professional bowling events. Robert Morga of New Hyde Park rolled an incredible 288, 299, and 300 in a three-game series – that's a 887 total score. According to the New York State USBC, it's one of the best series of all time – that's in the history of New York State league bowling, folks – and, according to the national USBC, ranked higher than the best three-game series ever bowled by male bowlers in 11 states. (There have been four 900 series bowled in New York; the USBC lists Robert Mushtare of Fort Drum, who did it twice in 2005 and 2006; William Howell III of Middletown, who did it in 2010; and John Martorella Sr. of Greece, who rolled his 900 in 2012.) Morga, a right-hander, was Robert Morga riveting on this particular evening; he was pretty much locked in like no bowler I have ever watched. In the middle of the second game, he slipped a bit at the line in one frame, yet his Roto Grip ball stayed on line for yet another perfect strike; only a standing single pin on his 12th shot prevented perfection. It was the opposite in the third game, when a late-falling seven pin secured his 300 game as the entire bowling center exploded in raucous applause. It is impossible to bowl better than Bob Morga did on March 12, 2015 at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. We

The New York Mets somehow kept things interesting for their beat writers the first week of spring training. Outfielder Curtis Granderson, who came to the Mets as a free agent after a respectable career with the Yankees, continued to needle his old team in print. When “Grandy” signed with the Mets a year ago, he famously uttered that “true New Yorkers are Mets fans.” Upon entering camp this year, he added: “The Mets are ready to take the town over from the Yankees.” That’s wonderful, Curtis – but I think that Mets fans would rather hear how the Mets are ready to take the National League East over from the Washington Nationals. At this point, the Miami Marlins appear to be a bigger threat to the Nats than the Mets are. Granderson’s grandiosity was followed by “Lunchgate”; pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard created a stir when he decided to eat lunch while a Mets intrasquad game was occurring, even though Syndergaard wasn’t scheduled in it. Apparently, Syndergaard wasn’t sure what passes for early spring training etiquette and believed, quite reasonably in my opinion, that it would be a good idea to eat early so that he would have more time to work out in the afternoon. Mets captain David Wright thought otherwise and lectured Syndergaard. Wright went public with his leadership skills by discussing with the media about what transpired. Relief pitcher Bobby Parnell punctuated things by tossing Noah’s lunch in the garbage, and telling reporters that “when children don’t behave, you take their toys away.” That’s great for team morale boosting. Syndergaard, to his credit, handled things well by saying that he learned from his mistake, and harbors no ill feelings. As if that weren’t enough excitement from Port

St. Lucie, Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy stated that he wasn’t comfortable with homosexuality after Billy Bean, a former big league outfielder who came out of the closet after his playing days, spoke to the Mets at the request of GM Sandy Alderson. Murphy took a lot of criticism for

speaking how he felt, but it’s unfair to paint him as if he’s a member of the Westboro Baptist Church. He was emphatic in saying that he would not have a problem with having a gay player as a teammate as long as he helps his team win. That’s good enough for me.

A Mighty Major: Rob Longiaru of Seaford emerged as the winner the $3,000 top prize at the 2015 LIGBT Winter Major tournament on March 8 at AMF Babylon Lanes. Longiaru defeated Rich Patson of Lindenhurst and Abel David of Franklin Square in the final shootout to secure his second LIGBT title; Longiaru shot a 224 to win, eight pins greaterthan Patson’s 216 ($1,500) and David’s 183 ($750). A club record two-day crowd of 339 entries created a prize fund that exceeded $15,000 for this tournament. There were a total of 60 finalists (also an LIGBT record), who all earned a minimum of $100. Sports editors are certainly glad that Alex Rodriguez is back. He has already appeared on the cover of two issues of USA Today Sports Weekly, and it’s not even April. My guess is that Rodriguez won’t be booed on the road as much as most people think. He has been torn apart so much by holierthan-thou types in the media in spite of his apologies that there could be a pro “A-Rod” backlash. No one expects the Brooklyn Nets to win an

NBA championship in the foreseeable future. Most of their fans realize that just making the playoffs is the equivalent of a title for their team. The Nets are in a dog fight with five other teams for the seventh and eighth berths in the NBA Eastern Division playoffs. If they do make it into the NBA postseason, it will be because of their surprising MVP this season: guard Jarrett Jack, who has shown a knack for hitting game-winning shots at or near the buzzer. The Nets are not known for being a clutch team, as anyone who was watched point guard Deron Williams constantly turn the ball over the waning moments of the fourth quarter will attest. The Nets home arena, Barclays Center, will be busy with ring action: On April 11, NBC Sports will televise a packed boxing card from the venue that features Danny Garcia, Peter Quillin, Andy Lee, and Danny Jacobs. The WWE has announced that SummerSlam will take place there on August 23; tickets are already on sale. Brentwood native and longtime Major League Soccer player Chris Armas has returned to our area. He will be an assistant coach with the New York Red Bulls. When MLS announced that there would be an expansion team playing at Yankee Stadium this year, the New York City Football Club, the conventional wisdom was that the Red Bulls would market themselves to New Jersey since their home stadium is just outside of Newark in Harrison, while the NYCFC would own the “Big Apple.” Apparently, no one told Red Bulls management, who held both a media day and season kickoff party at the rock venue Webster Hall in the East Village. Time's Ticking Out: Five years ago, the home shopping network known as ShopNBC – recently rebranded as Evine Live – seemed to be red hot with its wristwatch sales – but since that time, the players involved have changed dramatically. Jim Skelton, a program host that left ShopNBC and later joined WorldOfWatches.tv, is now The leaving that platform to Odd Couple reportedly begin a new online men's magazine. Evine has also parted ways with the Android watch brand for reasons that few can fathom, as its products are lauded by fans on several blogs. ‘Old-School’ Variety Show In Sag Harbor

A unique event, dubbed “Get Down With Dawnette: A Classic Variety Show,” takes over on Saturday, March 28 at 8 pm at The Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. Country Kelsea's Coming: On February 5 at The Patchogue Theatre, the young country newcomer Kelsea Ballerini wowed the crowd with a passionate, heartfelt performance as part of the “Girls With Guitars 2” mega-show – and now she's made national news as well by performing at the genre's most storied venue: Ballerini made her Grand Ole Opry debut on Valentine's Day in Nashvile. Following the Kelsea performance of her Top 30 single Ballerini "Love Me Like You Mean It," the Knoxville, Tennessee native choked up before performing her new song “The First Time,” announcing it is also the title track of her debut album, due May 19. "I wrote this song a long time ago about learning the lesson that sometimes the past should stay in the past,” said Ballerini, who met stars such as Ricky Scaggs during her time at the Opry. “I never thought I'd be so thankful for that experience and that I'd be playing it at the Grand Ole Opry! However, our friend Veronica promises us that once bikini weather hits, she'll invite us over for barbecue – with the leftovers to be packed in picnic baskets as we hit Jones Beach, Long Beach, and the Hamptons afterward. Alex Abrash's AA Mastering in Plainview has been busy of late, “cutting new vinyl records every day,” according to Abrash. The mastering house recently finished a re-release of the classic 1990 Social Distorition album for Brookvale Records. ELECTRIC AVENUE PROFILES Multi-Faceted McManus: Don Miguel Emerges

Music is never completely original; it is a combination of influences, experiences, and situations from someone’s life. A true musician takes from what is all around him and creates his or her own style and sound. Massapequa’s Michael McManus has taken his experiences from performing and touring in a number of bands to produce his new projects. He’s more than diverse: He serves as a musician, a hip hop producer, and a member of a band, Gamblers. This indie rock/electronica group performs shows in the Long Island and New York City area. Their debut album, Small World, will be released later this year. After a lifetime of making music, McManus – also known as Don Miguel – worked for three years to produce his own hip hop album, Waiting For Carmine, originally released in October. The album is being re-released by Mac Media Promo, a company that has overseen releases from Big L, Tupac, and Kanye West. McManus handles all the beats, most of the instrumentation, and some of the singing as well. On the album, there are more than 25 collaborations with a wide array of emcees and singers; a notable one is with ST 2 Lettaz, on “Crop Circles.” Once McManus started recording, a fire burned within him giving him the confidence to finish, according to the artist. His album deals with his upbringing in his family owned bar (Peter McManus in New York City), and the trials and tribulations of what that environment breeds. “Waiting,” a common theme of the album, relates to the ideas and feelings behind it, whether it be waiting for tables or waiting for the next big thing to happen. “Move on and move up, and you will move up,” a line from “Everything Falls In Line,” represents how he stopped as a waiter and took the first step to achieve his dreams. McManus has a new manager, Matthew Connaway, and is utilizing the Internet to spread the word on his music. Kalimba Music, the newly re-launched label led by Earth, Wind & Fire founder Maurice White, follows the success this past summer of keyboardist Greg Manning – the first artist on its roster – with the signing of one of the top musicians the Long Island area has ever produced: The powerhouse contemporary jazz saxophonist and vocalist Paula Atherton. RHYTHM TRACKING Empire's Empire: There have been attempts in the past to do TV shows centered around the record business, but they were all horrible and short lived. I often wondered: Why can't we have something like "Dallas" or "Dynasty," but instead of oil as the family business, why not music? Lo and behold, my prayers have been answered: Fox has given us "Empire," or, as some involved with the show call it, “Black Dynasty,” and the term fits. It's all there: the businessobsessed father; three sons (one gay and one nuts, just like Steven and Adam Carrington); Cookie, the exwife taking the role of the Alexis/Joan Collins character; and they've even dragged Courtney Love into the mix. The family is black, the music is R&B and hip hop, and it's an enjoyable, ratings-winning hit – and on top of it all, the just-released soundtrack album is #1 on the Amazon and iTunes sales charts. Life imitates art, and everyone wins. All hail the "Empire!" Blurred & Stirred: When I first heard "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke and Pharrell, I loved it. They performed it before it was released on NBC's "The Voice," and from the get-go, I was rocking to the funky intro ... and then I realized that it was quite similar to the Marvin Gaye Motown hit, "Got To Give It Up” from decades ago. Apparently, Gaye's surviving family members came to the same conclusion, and became embroiled in a year-long copyright lawsuit over the use of "Got To Give It Up" helping to make "Blurred Lines" an international chart topping hit. For those who believe that (in this era of streaming, Pandora, Spotify, and 99 cent downloads) that there's no real money in the music business, think again: "Lines" has generated $61 million Katy Perry

million. The Motown fan in me is smiling, but this opens up a major can of worms, and isn't over yet; the "Lines" people intend to challenge the verdict, so stay tuned. Forever Loud: One of the unsung heroes of the 70s NYC downtown rock scene is the late, great Lance Loud, who starred in “An American Family,” the first-ever reality TV show on PBS in the 1970s. Loud used that fame to front a band called The Mumps, and the group made some great records and played the Manhattan rock clubs Max's Kansas City and CBGB during the mid-70s glam-into-punk era. Now comes a beautiful coffee table book from the publishers at Glitterati called Lance Out Loud, curated and delivered by his mom, Pat Loud, who also starred in the PBS series. It is a beautiful homage to this underground scene maker – who I had the pleasure to know – and is adorned with an onslaught of the biggest names and stars of the 70s, film, music and art worlds. They were all brought together by the brilliant and talented Lance Loud; he is very much missed. Girl Fight: The ongoing battle between Taylor Swift and Katy Perry causes me to ponder why females in music are always pitted against each other. I've lived through many of the great rivalries/cat fights: Grace Slick and Janis Joplin; Bette Midler and Karen Carpenter; Diana Ross and all the other females at Motown Records; the New York City showdown, "Rip Her To Shreds," between Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, and Cherry Vanilla; and in more recent times, Madonna versus Mariah Carey and Britney Spears versus Christina Aguliera. Are females are put into this position by a male-dominated music biz? Can't we all just get along? Regardless, I love them all. Let the hair pulling begin.

Coming To Queens: Elected officials and community leaders gathered at Queens Borough Hall on February 3 as Bay Shore's LGBT Network presented the Q Center: The Queens LGBT Community Center and its plans to transform the lives of thousands in the borough from Astoria to Bayside to the Rockaways. The LGBT Network has been providing services for more than 22 years for LGBT communities on Long Island, and operates three LGBT Centers, with a fourth slated for later this year in Patchogue. The LGBT Network has already grown roots in Queens, and is providing programs and services to hundreds of people. The LGBT Network’s Q Center has been working with middle schools to establish gaystraight alliance (GSA) clubs and provide education and training for students, parents, and faculty in both middle and senior high schools. The Q Center has also enrolled dozens of families in the New York State Marketplace for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The Q Center’s first location will be The Samuel Field YMCA in Little Neck. Long-term plans include bringing additional LGBT Centers to Astoria/Long Island City, Bayside/Whitestone, and The Rockaways within the next three years. “The LGBT Network’s community centers in Nassau and Suffolk counties have done an outstanding job of providing safe spaces and life changing services to LGBT individuals of all ages,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. “It is therefore great news that The LGBT Network will be opening similar centers here in Queens. The Queens LGBT community needs a strong voice and advocate throughout the entire borough and the Q Center will work with all to achieve that.” With the addition of the Q Center, The LGBT Network, which also includes Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), The Long Island LGBT Community Center (The Center), and Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders-Long Island (SAGELong Island), will have a service region that includes close to six million people and stretches from the Midtown Tunnel to Montauk. The LGBT Network’s will become the largest out of any LGBT Health and Human Service Organization in New York State and that will help bring much needed resources to the borough of Queens and Long Island to expand and provide new services and programs.

UK singer/songwriter Katy Tiz, a new star on Atlantic Records, is back with “Whistle (While You Work It),” the new single from her upcoming Atlantic Records debut album. “Whistle (While You Work It)” follows the success of “The Big Bang,” Katy’s breakout single that launched her onto the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Top 40 radio charts. The success of “The Big Bang” led Tiz to become Clear Channel/iHeartRadio’s first ever unsigned artist in their “On The Verge” campaign last year. Steve Vai: Sony Music Entertainment and Legacy Recordings have signed the Long Island-bred guitarist Steve Vai to a new multialbum agreement, which includes plans to issue two fresh Vai sets in 2015 beginning with the release of Stillness In Motion - Vai Live in L.A.

Kendra Sunderland, the Oregon State University student who was caught “camming” from her school library, has landed a contract and completed a photo shoot for Penthouse Magazine. The media giant came to a deal with Sunderland by offering the sultry co-ed a four-page spread and personal interview in an upcoming issue. After being banned by MyFreeCams, she is now performing live shows at PlayWithKendra.com, operated by FriendFinder's newest cam site, PlayWithMe.com. The 19-year-old college student told The New York Daily News she was hoping the hype brought on by the scandal might help jump-start her modeling career. Nineteen-year-old UK breakout star Ella Henderson’s hit single, “Ghost,” was recently certified platinum in the U.S. Henderson celebrated with the cast of the women's TV show “The View,” where she performed the newly-platinum hit. Henderson started her journey to fame as a contestant on “The X Factor UK” in 2012.
