Here are other veteran area acts that certainly have enjoyed their fair share of staying power: Kerry Kearney: The gifted guitarist plays more area shows than you’ve had hot dinners, ranging from the biggest theaters in the area to the music bar around the corner. Twisted Sister: Every year, they show up for their annual Christmas-season concerts – and every year, they not only sell the venues out but also bring the houses down in the process. Dee Snider remains our pick as coolest guy in Long Island. Barnaby Bye: We’d love to know the fountain of youth they collectively have found, because these 70s favorites somehow look younger and sound better than ever ... and keep selling out their local shows. Brian Setzer: The ultimate hometown boy made good (he’s from Massapequa), Setzer’s annual holiday concerts are an annual tradition, but he’s much more than that these days: His new album, May be his best recording of a career that started with The Stray Cats and shows no signs of slowing down.

The Weight is, from some accounts, a tribute to The Band – but this is clearly no cover band lineup: The group features the legendary Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante from The Band, Brian Mitchell and Byron Isaacs of The Levon Helm Band, and Marty Grebb, who worked with both Rick Danko and Richard Manuel of The Band. This amazing all-star lineup is a roots music fan's dream, and easily a best bet for this edition.

Furious 7

Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Jason Statham, Lucas Black, Kurt Russell Directed by James Wan Universal

This particular action film was a hard one to criticize. As star Paul Walker was killed in a tragic 2013 automobile accident, it was a brave move on the part of all involved to continue on with the making and release of Furious 7, the new installment of the mega-popular Fast & Furious series. Against a whole array of odds, Furious 7 turns out to be bright and exciting entertainment as well as a fitting send-off to both the series and to the immesely charismatic Walker. To be fair, the F&F series will never go down in cinema history as any sort of classic fare; the entire franchise has been predicated on a simple forumla: Buff bods and chiseled features from the leads, who invariously will drive the most amazing automobiles ever seen on film – but we have to admit that a screen filled with hunks and babes in every frame isn’t the hardest thing to warm up to. Diesel, who usually displays all the range of a hood

ornament, actually delivers what probably will be rememebered as the best performance of his career here – as does Rodriguez, who could have ended up a simple “scream queen” but instead has fashioned herself into every action film fan’s favorite heroine. And every comic book plot needs big-time heroes and heroines, even when the doings are dumb: Deckard Shaw (Statham), the brother of the crew's slain enemy Owen Shaw, has vowed to wipe out our team of heroes as revenge for his brother’s death.

There’s terrorists who have stolen a secret surveillance program, and its creator needs to be saved. Add in a bunch of governmental intrigue, and our coterie of film stars will run to the rescue. However, nobody who is a fan of this series will care, as anyone who buys a ticket to Furious 7 is there to watch a red sports car fly through the air and crash into a skyscraper, just like in the commercials. Amazingly, Walker’s role runs seamlessly, a fitne finale, indeed. Just pass the large buttered and have fun.

Johan Santana was never the same after throwing a 135-pitch no-hitter, the first and only in Mets history, on June 1, 2012. In recent years, starters Mike Pelfrey, Pedro Martinez, John Maine, Jon Niese, Dillon Gee, and Matt Harvey all have lost anywhere from half of a season to an entire one recovering from arm woes – now, Zach Wheeler has

The Mets were hoping that off-season rest might be a cure, but unfortunately the pain was even worse after throwing in Port St. Lucie during early spring training. A follow-up MRI revealed a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm. That well-known baseball medical procedure, “Tommy John surgery,” is once again necessary. Frustrated fans began pointing fingers at Mets management, as if its were responsible for Wheeler’s predicament. Zach’s own agent, B.B. Abbott, quickly absolved them of any blame. Not to be disrespectful to Wheeler’s talent, but “the sky is falling” reaction among many Mets fans is not warranted based on what the pitcher has done in his first two seasons with the team. Yes, there was a lot of hype about him when Mets general manager Sandy Alderson acquired him from the San Francisco Giants for soon-to-be free agent centerfielder Carlos Beltran. While he has shown nasty stuff to hitters, Wheeler has frequently had control issues, and his lifetime record is a rather pedestrian 18-16. The games that he pitched in often were interminable because he seemed to go to a full count with every opposing batter. Frankly, Mets aficionados should be more concerned about the team’s bullpen. Closer Bobby Parnell missed most of last season recovering from arm surgery; so far he has not shown any signs of rust, but he’s a long way from contributing. Vic Black, who did a terrific job getting the Mets out of many jams last year, is now battling tendinitis. San Francisco scribe Steve Kettmann has written a biography on Alderson, Baseball Maverick (Grove

It’s hard to fathom how someone can say that Alderson has performed miracles when the team still has not had a winning season during his stewardship. The book is a serviceable recap of the last four years at Citi Field, though Kettmann acts more like Alderson’s flak than he does as an impartial journalist. He praises Alderson for not re-signing shortstop Jose Reyes in 2011 because of concerns about Reyes’ Zack Wheeler legs and his durability. Kettmann confirms the Mets never made a formal offer, but claims Alderson was willing to sign Reyes to a long-term deal in the neighborhood of $100 million. I am not sure if the moves will lead the Jets to the Super Bowl, but at least they serve as a way for owner Woody Johnson to apologize to his customers for former GM John Idzik’s reign of error. While they have not been the joke that the New York Knicks have turned into this season, the Brooklyn Nets haven’t given fans much. Country Conlee’s Comeback: Fans of one of country music’s most distinctive song stylists have waited awhile, but now he’s returned: Veteran performer John Conlee has made his way back to the radio with the emotional single “Walkin’ Behind The Star,” released on his own RCR (Rose Colored Records) label. The song was written by Nashville industry veterans Ronnie Scaife and Phil Thomas, who collabo- John Conlee rated on the Johnny Paycheck hits “Colorado Cool Aid” and “Me And The IRS” together. The touching lyrics were inspired by Phil’s grandfather and greatgrandfather, both of whom served in their local sheriff’s department. Rockbilly Party At Legends Night At NYBC Theatre At Westbury

There will be a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on at NYCB Theatre at Westbury on April 19 – in many different ways. The main stage concert, “Ultimate Legends Of Rock & Roll,” stars the iconic Jerry Lewis and Chubby Checker, but a second event is going on earlier as a special attraction. A pre-show rockabily party takes place in the NYCB Theatre’s Lounge 960 beginning at 6 pm, with music by the area band Rockabilly Deluxe. A giveaway by Rockabilly Barbers will be part of the fun. Wang Center: Now Open At Stony Brook

On March 11, a crowd of faculty members, students, advisory board members, friends, and neighbors joined administrators and officials to celebrate the opening of 2015 Spring Cultural Programs at The Charles B. Wang Center. Outgoing Wang Center director Jinyoung Jin and a number of campus representatives spoke about the transformation of the Charles B. Wang Center, the new audience experience, and the future of the Center. Following the opening remarks, Susan Yu, the director of the Taipei Cultural Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, and Dr. Lee Talbot, the curator of Textile Museum, opened the doors of the new Charles B. Peter Nero: Legendary Pianist Headlines Madison Theatre

A true legend of Amarican popular music, pianist Peter Nero, makes a rare area appearance as he brings his “The Gershwin Project” to The Madison Theatre at Molloy College on Sunday, April 12 at 3 pm. Tickets and information: madisontheatreny.org, or call (516) 323-4444. This year marks the 53rd anniversary of the birth of Peter Nero’s recording career, which eventually produced 70 recordings. In 1960, he was signed to a three-year contract with RCA Victor records, which was then renewed for another five years, producing more than 26 LPs, including Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue And Piano Concerto in F with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. RHYTHM TRACKING Stream On: Spotify is the new AM/FM radio – only better. Yes, if you want it without the ads, you have to pay nine bucks a month, but hey, a movie costs more, and you're out on the streets again in two hours. My nine dollar investment allows me to enjoy endless Motown or punk rock marathons without having to dig through my thousands of vinyl records and compact discs, and the sound is totally excellent. iTunes now wants what Spotify has, and so does the Apple/Beats Music coalition, so be prepared for streaming to become the number one conveyance for music listening, if it isn't already. It sucks if you're the artists, because the royalties are microscopic, but we wanted the digital world, and we got it. People are still making music, and people are still consuming that music, only in different ways. Collections are obviously out, except for hardcore fans that still buy vinyl or CDs. You can collect your favorite Spotify albums on the site, but you can't (legally) burn them or move them around, so it's a “cloud” collection. Can something become a “hit” thanks to Spotify? The jury is still out, but for the moment, I think most go to Spotify to listen to something after it's already become a hit. iTunes does deliver hits, and that may be how their streaming service will take over the game. Once iTunes streaming is up and running, you listen and buy all in the same moment and immediately affect the iTunes chart, which the Bob industry and Billboard Dylan Magazine now pay attention to. That, in and of itself, may provide the end game and endanger Spotify's future. The people, the advertising, and the hype will decide in the next year who or what comes out on top. Is music as important to the new breed as it was to those of us who are the baby boomers? It is, but in different ways; it is not the music of a “revolution,” or the force that will change the world – the baby boomers already

Civil rights, women's rights, and LGBT rights were all affected by pop culture in those powerful decades, music as well as films, TV, and books (remember them?) all steered the ship into the new, liberated world in which we live, firmly reenforced by all of that culture widely available to the generations that followed, thanks to the worldwide web. Music now provides the color for everything we consume, and there's a multigenerational overlap, thanks, again, to the Internet. My baby boomer pals, the generation that never grew up, are astounded when the young don't know who Bob Dylan or George Harrison is, but, as a kid in the 1960s, I didn't care at all about music from the 1930s – after all, that was 30 years earlier. Why would I care about Bing Crosby, Harry James, or even The McGuire Sisters or Pat Boone for that matter, which were only 10 years earlier? Boomers can't grasp that the 70s was almost 40 years ago and the 60s are 50 years ago, but they need to think about how they felt in the 60s and 70s about “old people's music.” Granted, the importance of being “now,” thereby “hip,” “with it,” and “cool,” are concepts that no longer carry any weight; kids consume what is being made for kids, although they do get exposed to the “old people's music” whenever mom or dad throws on some Hendrix or Joplin. Welcome to the new world.
