It Must Be Spring: Tolentine Flea Events

It’s such a huge event it draws fans from Long Island and Brooklyn: Each summer Saturday, a huge flea market takes place at St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, technically listed at 150-75 Goethals Avenue in Jamaica – though most regulars will tell you it’s on Union Turnpike in Flushing, which is the other corner of the site for this huge weekly event. This expansive flea market offers virtually everything you can think of – used electronics, new and vintage clothing, jewelry and crafts, records and DVDs, car accessories, tools, watches, off-brand and drug store-quality health and beauty aids – and the prices, as quoted by the event’s fans, are “out of this world.” Sure, there is lots of over-used crap that should rightly for the dumpster, but some buys are truly worth seeking out.

A smaller version of the flea market usually runs on Sundays.

White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, he combines elements of jazz, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience.

White, from England, learned his first chords on an acoustic guitar, then bought his first electric guitar in his early teens and studied the recordings of the reigning guitar gods of the day – Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. But his

One-Of-A-Kind Guitarist Graces Madison Theatre At Molloy College

musical aspirations ultimately veered back in an acoustic direction following an accident that doomed his beloved electric guitar. The axe was destroyed in a fire, one that White’s younger brother Danny – an aspiring pianist – accidentally started.

“The funny thing is that Danny didn’t actually admit to setting that fire for at least 25 years,” sayid White. “I had been kind of obsessed with

the electric guitar at that point in my life, so that episode kind of forced me to go back to playing the acoustic. In retrospect, that’s a good thing.”

White’s interests after the accident shifted more toward the music of acoustic artists Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell.

Plugged or unplugged, he had decided by his late teens that music was his calling, and his first professional gig was at a holiday resort in England when he was 19 years old. Barely a year later, he was invited to join Al Stewart’s band; he worked with Stewart in the studio in the making of Year Of The Cat, the lead single from which became a huge hit for Stewart in 1976. The tour and the

album marked the beginning of a 20-year association with Stewart. In that time, the two musicians co-wrote numerous songs, including Stewart’s 1978 hit, “Time Passages.”

White launched his solo recording career with the 1990 release of Reveillez-Vous (French for “wake up,” a title chosen by White in honor of his French mother). The album included several unused songs that White had written for Stewart, and it became a favorite among contemporary jazz radio stations. He followed with three records on the Sindrome label – Excusez-Moi (1991), Promenade (1993), and Reflections (1994) – before signing with Columbia for the 1996 release of Caravan Of Dreams. He maintained an ambitious release schedule through the ‘90s and beyond, but also found time to appear on recordings by many of his friends, including Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Jeff Golub, Lee Ritenour, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, and others.

White released the album Here We Go in 2012; the 11-song set, produced by White and DC , features guest musicians. Smile, released this past fall, is the final CD in White’s trilogy of albums consisting entirely of his own material.

White insists that it’s the faces in the crowd and the fans that keep the experience fresh.

“I’ll play a live show, and someone will come to me afterward and say, ‘Oh, I loved this CD,’ or ‘This song helped me through a bad time’ ...That’s what keeps me going – the idea that people out there really care about what I do, the idea that I’ve made a difference for someone.”

The promoter of this concert and the “Smooth Jazz” series, Alan Stein, recently announced that three more concerts in the series have been booked for The Madison Theatre at Molloy College beginning this fall. Keep an eye in Good Times and the Madison website for updates.

And yes – AMF centers are party central, with “lights out” and party bowling being the most prevalent game there. It might be a dean of area houses, but this meticulously clean and busy center is a favorite among league bowlers and weekend “Rock 'N Bowl” keglers alike. From birthday parties to competitive tournaments, Herrill is an important part of the social fabric in the New Hyde Park /Williston Park / Mineola area. Leagues flocked here during the forced big chain exodus two years ago, and they’ve stayed and scored.

The Wrecking Crew

Produced & directed by Denny Tedesco Magnolia Pictures

When most people hear the term “wrecking crew,” they think of demolitions. Ask those who were involved in the recording industry in the 1960s and early 1970s about “The Wrecking Crew,” the odds are that you will hear about the great studio musicians who played on the records of nearly everyone who was anyone on the pop charts.

Just exactly who was a member of The Wrecking Crew is debatable; among the bestknown were Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, and Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack. The vast majority of the musicians, such as drummers Earl Palmer and Hal Blaine, keyboardist Don Randi, bassist Carol Kaye, and guitarists Al Casey, Bill Pitman, and Tommy Tedesco, were content to stay in the shadows collecting session recording checks while avoiding the travel that many of their colleagues had to endure. Denny Tedesco (the son of Tommy Tedesco, whose rapidfinger Spanish guitar licks can be heard on many Gary Lewis & the Playboys records) produced this fine documentary about his father and his colleagues.

It has taken Denny Tedesco almost 20 years to get this documentary released. In 1996, he staged a reunion of some of the more prominent members of The Wrecking Crew to sit around a table in an Los Angeles recording studio to talk about the good old days. The reason for the lengthy delay was not because of lawsuits, but rather on account of the hefty licensing fees involved with using even snippets of the many hit recordings on which the studio musicians played.

It’s a joy to hear Tommy Tedesco reminisce about the “Something Stupid” recording session that featured Frank Sinatra and his daughter, Nancy, as well as Carol Kaye showing how she improvised the bass line intro to the Sonny & Cher classic “The Beat Goes On.” Denny Tedesco was able to get the normally reclusive leader of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, to speak at length about how The Wrecking Crew was able to play every note that

he heard in his head, and recreate them in recordings.

Sometimes the process was quick, but in the case of creating “Good Vibrations,” it took six months. Tommy Tedesco didn’t mind, since he notes nonchalantly that “Capitol Records was picking up the tab.”

The documentary makes a big distinction between touring musicians and those who worked strictly on session recordings. The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine said that he and his band mates did not take umbrage to The Wrecking Crew doing the heavy lifting on their albums since The Beach Boys were so busy on the road that it would have been impossible for them to be in a studio

tackling new material. The Monkees’ Peter Tork admitted that it bothered him that he was told to sit and watch The Wrecking Crew recording Monkees tracks at the time, but with age comes wisdom; Tork confesses that he now understands why these guys, many of whom are now in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, were used. On the other hand, Herb Alpert said that many of the members of his old group, The Tijuana Brass, always resented that they did not have anything to do with their records except pose for the album covers.

Although not well-known to the public, The Wrecking Crew recorded with everyone from Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin to Jan & Dean and The Grass Roots, and were well-compensated. In one of the sadder moments of the documentary, Blaine talks about how at one time he owned a Rolls-Royce, a 23-room mansion in Hollywood Hills, and a yacht, and then lost it all through a series of divorces. Blaine’s finances became so precarious that he had to work as a security guard in Scottsdale, Arizona because session work had dried up as rock bands demanded to record their own material. Record companies, fearing backlash from increasingly more sophisticated music fans, were eager to have bands record their own tracks.

This film nicely follows in the footsteps of last year’s Academy Award-winning documentary about background singers, 20 Feet From Stardom. This may be the golden age of pop music film docs, as All Things Must Pass, which looks at the rise and fall of Tower Records, also recently had its debut at the South By Southwest pop culture festival in Austin.

It’s the question that’s been on many a sports fan’s mind: Did St. John’s University reach out to arguably its greatest player, Chris Mullin, to become its next basketball head coach while Steve Lavin was still in charge? It seemed just a little too convenient that Mullin accepted the job five days after Lavin was dismissed.

Despite the doubts, Red Storm fans shouldn’t be too concerned about Mullin’s lack of head coaching experience. Given his stellar NBA career and considerable experience as a pro basketball executive, it should be a seamless transition. One of the knocks on Lavin was that he did not recruit in St. John’s own backyard, and didn’t kill himself developing relationships with local area high school basketball coaches. IGBT Titans: Sal Florindo, a 74-year-old right-hander from Forest Hills, captured his first LIGBT title after trying for five years on March 29 at AMF East Meadow Lanes. Florindo shot a 245 handicap game in the final shootout to win the $1,000 top prize. Finishing in second place was Daniel Gehrig of Baldwin. In the previous LIBGT handicap tournament on March 22 at Maple Family Centers' Farmingdale Lanes, Michael Bagnato, a league bowler at Farmingdale Lanes, always said he would destroy all competitors if the LIGBT ran a league shot event at his home bowling center – and his boasting was no lie as he won his first LIGBT title and the $1,000 top prize with a clutch performance. Bagnato, from Lindenhurst, marked in all 10 frames to shoot a 255 to win by four pins. Arnold Yuen of Flushing finished second ($600); Frank O’Mara of Babylon finished in third place, earning his $300 prize.

Duke Wants The Duke Again: From the PBA's Jerry Schneider: Prior to making his PBA50 Tour debut in the Pasco County Florida Open to kick off the 2014 PBA50 season, Hall of Famer Norm Duke was quick to point out that starting another new chapter in his legendary career on the so-called “PBA senior tour” was something he was going to take very seriously. It wasn’t going to be some kind of leisurely hobby.

He’s lived up to his word: In 2014, Duke went on to become only the second player to earn PBA50 Player of the Year and PBA50 Rookie of the Year in the same season, winning two titles, including the Senior U.S. Open. The 2015 PBA season marks Duke’s 33rd season in PBA competition. His career dates back to 1983 when, at age 18, he won the Cleveland Open to become the youngest player ever to win a PBA Tour title.

Since, he has amassed a PBA career that puts him among the PBA’s elite.

“You know how it is when you’re young; you think you’re going to take the world by the horns,” Duke said of his early days on Tour. “But I quickly learned that as good as I thought I was, I had a lot to learn, not only about bowling, but life in general … I learned some lessons along the way and am pretty proud about the body of work I’ve been able to put together on the PBA Tour. I hope I can continue to build it on the PBA50 Tour.” At press time, it was not known if Duke will appear at the Johnny Petraglia PVL Open the week of May 2 at Farmingdale Lanes.

On the Saturday night before Opening Day, ESPN debuted its latest “E:60" documentary, “The Dark Knight Returns,” an hour-long profile of New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey. Jeremy Schaap did a fine job interviewing Harvey and others, including manager Terry Collins and Harvey’s agent, the inimitable Scott Boras. Interestingly, both Mets CEO Fred Wilpon and his son, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, refused to appear on the show. My guess is that they did not want to get caught on camera answering questions about Harvey’s high profile off-the-field activities such as dating the hottest models, dining at the trendiest restaurants, as well as wearing threads from the most expensive boutiques.

Here is a suggestion for an easy and fun road trip: The Mets will be playing the Phillies in Philadelphia the weekend of May 7. The conventional wisdom is that the Phillies will be awful this year, and that means that getting a ticket to a game at beautiful Citizens Bank Park should not be a difficult task. Starliters and later Sandy Scott, few knew that his legendary next stop would be the beginning of a hall of fame career.

Early in 1965, Cavaliere formed The Young Rascals with Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish.That October, they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island’s then-elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, the smash “Good Lovin'” struck #1 in February 1966. They followed suit with hits including “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin’ (#1 in 1967), “How Can I Be Sure,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got To Be Free” (#1 in 1968). The Rascals are considered the best “blue-eyed soul” group to come out of the 1960s, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales.

The Rascals disbanded in 1972, and Cavaliere's solo career has been going strong ever since. He now calls Nashville home base, where he is constantly collaborating and writing new material. What's going on, ladies and gentlemen? Hopefully you are very well, as I have been, too. If you haven’t been up on your game, that’s what I’m here to help with. I’ve been itching to go to some shows lately and there are finally a few in the area that may be of interest to you.

Make sure you get to check out The Chainsmokers with Grandtheft and Bebe Rexha at Terminal 5 on Friday, April 24. If you haven’t been to Terminal 5, this is your chance to check out the iconic venue and have some fun while you’re at it. If you’re not feeling that show, fear not. On that same night you can swing on over to Webster Hall and check out Madeon performing with The M Machine.

And then, how can anyone forget about the upcoming festival season! Two big festivals are coming up during Memorial Day weekend and you’re unfortunately going to have to choose between the two.

That’s right, I’m talking about EDC New York at Metlife Stadium and Mysteryland USA in upstate Bethel Woods. I won’t go into details Madeon

about the lineups as this information is easily accessible with a simple Google search but what I will say is these are two very different environments. One takes place at the home of the New York Giants and the other is in the middle of the woods with a camping environment available. Both have very solid lineups. If you want the more urban environment with the carnival rides, EDC is the place for you to go. If you want a more relaxed environment where you can rage by day and chill out by night, Mysteryland might be your calling.

I would like to just remind you that Mysterland is a 21+ event, so if you

haven’t quite gotten there yet, you might be out of luck.

I hope you guys are craving some music as well because I’ve been downloading a load of stuff that I’m glad I can share with you.

Now I know this isn’t the newest release, but if there are any Barely Alive fans out there, you’ll be able to back me up when I say that Torrent This EP is a work of epic proportions. He basically took a bunch of really awesome songs and made them more awesome. He took old classics such as “Better Off Alone” and put his signature dubstep twist on them and turned them into a completely new piece of art. And since we’re on the topic of epic remixes, the artist Eptic has one of his own. Take the craziness that is “Hostile” by Skism and Laxx and give it to Eptic to just take control. What’s produced is something that I can’t seem to stop listening to and that I can’t wait to play at my next show. Now, if I mentioned “Song 2” to you, you’ll probably think of the band Blur initially. However, when you hear that from now on, I want you to think of DJ Bl3nd and Mr. Black. They took a rock classic, kept the part that everyone loved, and turned it into a big room banger. Say what you want about big room, but this song has quite some merit on its own and is the right combination of everything that makes a quality electronic remix. And if we wanna stay on the topic of old songs with a new twist to them, I want you to think back to “Apache” by Sugar Hill Gang. A timeless classic, no?

I’m sure everyone would agree.

Mix that with a solid Melbourne bounce drop and you have a hit for sure. Kastra figured this out and made his bootleg of “Apache”, which does exactly what I have described to the greatest extent.

C’mon, it’s a fun song that just got made more fun. How could you disagree?

Back For More

Indie rock band The Damnwells have released a new selftitled album featuring the original four band members via Rock Ridge Music. This is the first album since 2006 to include the original band lineup: Alex Dezen [lead vocals, guitar, piano], David Chernis [lead guitar], Ted Hudson [bass], and Steven Terry [drums/ percussion].)

A ‘Bush’ Of New Sounds

Snoop Dogg: Snoop Dogg will release a new album, Bush, on Columbia Records this spring.

The new disc is produced by Grammy Award-winner Pharrell Williams, and is a creative partnership with Doggy Style Records and i am Other. Dogg recently unveiled a taste of the first single, “Peaches N Cream,” in a short clip in advance of the official music video. The “teaser” debuts on multiple digital platforms including the newly unveiled site, FollowTheBush.com.

The historic pairing between longtime friends Dogg and Williams came after multiple successful collaborations in the studio, which started more than a decade ago. The duo made a pact with each other to restore the “missing” vibe in today’s music by creating songs dedicated to a “better present and an ideal future.”

Channeling retro-futuristic funk topped with a mix of R&B and pop, Bush blossoms with “a funkadelic glow,” said Snoop Dogg, “totally different than anything either of us has ever done.” In a recent interview with Power106 radio in Los Angeles, Williams boldly proclaimed: “Snoop’s album is better than mine.”

Liz Longley, the self-titled fourth studio album from the singer/songwriter and dual-instrumentalist, was released in March to much critical acclaim.

The new songs on this album grew amidst a period of transition and travel in Longley’s life; crafted while moving between Boston and New York before finally settling in Nashville, the city which has its own unique influence on the sound of this release, these numbers pack the punch of pages torn from Longley’s journal. The growth in Longley’s songwriting is evident on this new release; she penned all 11 tracks, each connecting with the listener on a personal level, the music perfectly pairing vulnerability with enough mystery to allow listeners to find their own meaning.

The album was produced by Gus Berry in Nashville and features sequencing and several new mixes from Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Sarah Jarosz).
