There are some who consider this sequel to the Marvel’s The Avengers blockbuster from two years back to be a “box office disappointment” – as if having the second-biggest opening of all time at a reported $188.7 million is something to sneeze at. The “problem” is that the first Avengers film had the greatest opening weekend ever, and in this money-means-everything world, second is as good as last place. What kind of a jaded, misguided, whacked world are we living in, anyway? In Hollywood, the perception is that if it didn’t rake in more cash, it’s not as good. However, this time, the perception is kinda, sorta right: This new superhero epic throws everything but the kitchen sink at viewers, is perfectly cast, and the action never stops from the first frame to the last ... yet, somehow, some way, it’s not nearly as enertaining as the original Avengers film. Frankly, the problem with this sequel – the unnofficial first film of the 2015 summer blockbuster season – is that there’s too much too much, if that’s a thing. There’s more jokes, more

Let’s face it – Hulk will never be done properly; even the 1966 Grantray-Lawrence-produced cartoon show version was more believable. Your kids are going to make you go, so dump off the left side of your brain at the box office, enjoy that big tub o’ buttered, and gaze at Scarlett Johanssen in the best costume she’s ever worn – and if you’re a female, we’re sure that Hemsworth, Renner (Green Arrow), and Evans (Captain America) will make your heart flutter every bit as much.

What is most disconcerting for Brooklyn Nets fans following their team’s expected ouster in the first round of the 2015 NBA playoffs at the hands of the Atlanta Hawks is that the future of the squad appears quite bleak. They don’t have a quality first-round pick for the foreseeable future thanks to some ill-advised trades by general manager Billy King. Adding to the misery is that King’s two prized centerpieces, forward Joe Johnson and point guard Deron Williams, appear to be over the hill. Center Mason Plumlee is the NBA’s version of “The Emperor’s New Clothes;” the Nets made him a centerpiece of their marketing campaigns this year, as well as their franchise face for the 2015 All-Star Game activities that took place in New York. Plumlee has no offensive skills and his defense isn’t much better. Whenever he is asked to spell Brook Lopez, the Nets stop scoring while the other

The New York Islanders gave it their all this season, but it was obvious that they were fatigued the last two months of the regular season and then ran out of gas at the most inopportune time as far as playoff seeding went. They possibly would have made it to the second round of the NHL playoffs had they been able to finish ahead of the Washington Capitals and thus have had home ice for a Game 7, instead of losing by a third period goal at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Losing Kyle Okposo for two months to an eye injury in January was definitely a momentum changer for the Isles. It would have been nice to extend the life of the original Nassau Coliseum a little longer, but it wasn’t meant to be. Perceptive Mark Herrmann of New York Newsday penned a column a couple weeks ago recalling when the then-New York Nets of the American Basketball Association called the Nassau Coliseum home before departing for New Jersey in 1977; it’s easy to wonder whether the Coliseum would have fallen into disrepair as quickly as it did had the Nets stayed. My guess is not only would the building have been maintained far better, but there would have been better mass transit, including a monorail link to the Hempstead LIRR station According to NFL draft experts, the New York Jets got a steal when the team selected USC defensive end Leonard Williams with the sixth pick in the first round. Hopefully, things will

BVL Open Results: Veteran left-hander Mike Scroggins won four consecutive stepladder matches to win the PBA50 Johnny Petraglia BVL Open on May 4 at Farmingdale Lanes to and become the season’s first two-time winner. Scroggins defeated PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber in the championship match, 247-195, to win his second PBA50 Tour title in three tournaments. “It’s hard to believe being here after what I’ve been through the past year,” said Scroggins, who is coming back from a nearly year-long layoff from competition because of a foot ailment. “It’s been a long road back but I can honestly say this is the best I’ve felt in about two years. “If anyone would have told me a year ago I’d be standing here with two titles, I’d say no way,” the eight-time PBA Tour winner added. “It’s fun to be on top again.” Weber was trying for his fourth PBA50 Tour title. The tournament was named after PBA legend Johnny Petraglia, and raised approximately $50,000 to benefit the BVL, the organization funded by the bowling industry that provides recreational and therapeutic programs and services for America’s active duty and veteran service men and women. – Jerry Schneider, PBA

when Huntington’s Chris Algieri takes on Great Britain’s Amir Khan. This could be a careerdefining fight for Algieri, who barely got by Ruslan Provodikov in his last fight in Brooklyn (many thought he was lucky to receive that split decision). Algieri got pummeled by Pacquiao in 2014, and my guess is that he should finally get serious about going to medical school if he loses to Khan, certainly no slouch in the ring. Citi Field will have bring professional wrestling to its infield on Sunday, June 7, as the stadium will host “The Legends of Wrestling.”

Among the big names who will be taking part are Bill Goldberg, Bret Hart, and “Nature Boy” Ric Flair; a new breed of young stars will compete. It was clear that the New York Mets’ magic would end once the team played in Yankee Stadium in late April – and sure enough, it dropped two out of three games in the first installment of the “Subway Series.” The Mets followed that up by losing two out of three to the Marlins in Miami; next up were the Washington Nationals, who have kicked sand in the Mets’ faces for years and took three out of four games from our Flushing heroes at Citi Field, including back-to-back games by a 1-0 score. Someone has to remind the Mets that they are playing baseball and not soccer. Mets fans should enjoy reading Michael Garry’s Game Of My Life: Mets (Sports Publishing); the author interviewed current Mets David Wright, Daniel Murphy, Travis d’Arnaud, and Jon Niese as well as former “Amazin’s” Todd Pratt, Felix Millan, Ed Kranepool, Eric Hillman, and Ed Charles, among others, about the best games of their careers while wearing a Mets uniform. The New York Yankees were supposed to be also-rans this season, but someone forgot to give manager Joe Girardi and GM Brian Cashman the memo: Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury seem to never make outs, while Alex Rodriguez appears to have been rejuvenated thanks to the sabbatical imposed on him by Major League Baseball.

he Bogmen – one of a small handful of Long Island rock acts to become national recording and touring artists during the mid-1990s – return to the stage for a homecoming show of sorts on Saturday, May 23 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington. Doors open at 7 pm; the popular “Founder’s Room” after-party applies for this event. For tickets and information log on to paramountny.com or ticketmaster.com. For the few area fans that may not know: The Bogmen are an indie rock band based in Huntington, the same town as The Paramount. The group was formed in 1993 by Billy Campion, Bill Ryan, Brendan Ryan, Mark Wike, P.J. O’Connor, and Clive Tucker. Campion met Bill and Brendan Ryan in the late 1970s. Sharing a passion for music, they started a new band, The Plummers. During college, the group picked up bassist Mark Wike, drummer Clive Tucker, and percussionist P. J. O’Connor. With this lineup, the band called itself The Bogmen, in honor of what Campion called its “tribal, huntish” sound. In 1995, after playing at “every bar, club, and retirement home in the tri-state area,” according to the group, this talented, unique band from Long Island was signed to Arista Records, and eventually released its first album, Life Begins at 40 Million, which was produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads.

The Bogmen are also fondly remembered for their albums Closed Captioned Radio and Yellar, as well as their most recent EP, Lookin' For Heaven In the Barrio, which was part of the group's frequent comebacks a few years ago. Also popular is their live concert DVD that was shot at Irving Plaza in New York City, which shows the band at its in-performance best. A music video of The Bogmen performing one of its most requested songs, “Suddenly,” has been a favorite at Vevo and YouTube for years. “Mexico” is another one of the band's most famous tunes, and a perfect example of what made this Long Islandbased band so different – they could rock, for sure, but their story songs of lost loves and life's other constant trevails made them much different from the big-hair bombast of their original timeframe. A Gifted Songsmith’s Rise

A Long Island music artist, 29-yearold Jeff LeBlanc’s just-released new album, Vision (now available wherever music is sold), looks to distinguish him from a crowded field of singer/ songwriters. Somewhat R&B and somewhat soulful, the record elevates his signature blend of smooth pop to a higher level – all the while tackling sounds and topics he had yet to explore in his previous efforts. “I really challenged myself on this record,” said LeBlanc. “I went into the studio each and every day, focused to create something deeper than I ever had before.” The core of the record was tracked in Nashville’s legendary Sound Emporium studios, and the results are evident. In the track “Stumbled,” LeBlanc shares the blunders of re-entering the dating scene and the heartbreak of falling for someone too fast – all set to a light-hearted, infectious groove. “Say Anything You Want” is a response to all those in your life who criticize or doubt you; with a boastful almost arrogant tone, the song drives home the message that no one has the right to put you down. “Why Do I Worry” is one of LeBlanc’s most lyrically personal songs to date. “Sometimes I waste my days just thinking,” he said. “We all worry about the things that we can’t control.” The new album is the work of an artist who, through self-evaluation, has given us a snapshot into his soul. he songs have a mature perspective on many issues that young adults face, as well as those who have a few more years in their pocket. “I hope that the listeners can see themselves in my experiences” LeBlanc said, “yet find their own interpretation on how the words relate to them.” LeBlanc graduated from Sacred Heart University, earned a history degree, and imagined his destiny would likely be as a middle-school teacher. However, LeBlanc’s discovery of songwriting led him down a different path. Get The Led Out is a group of professional musicians who are passionate about their love of the music of the British hard rock legend Led Zeppelin. It’s been their mission to bring the studio recordings of the original group to life on the big concert stage. This is not an impersonator act, but rather a group of musicians who were fans first, striving to do justice to one of the greatest bands in rock history. From the bombastic and epic to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) has captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians; utilizing the multiinstrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO recreate the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. Marvel's The Avengers: Age Of Ultron" is a monster hit; Ant Man will be the center of the universe this summer; and a much-needed re-boot of The Fantastic Four will appear during the height of beach season. Of course, the films' original soundtrack albums, on CD or digital download, are must-haves for real comics fans. Television as well has been invaded, with “The Flash” and a Batman-less “Gotham” delivering good ratings. “Arrow” and “Agents Of SHIELD” continue to hold their own, and coming next season are a “Supergirl” show and a new CW team-up show starring the already introduced revamp of “The Atom.” If you're not on board with all of this, what are you waiting for?
