Two of the biggest names in MOR rock will grace a special stage at Belmont Park in Elmont as The Belmont Stakes Racing Festival brings The Goo Goo Dolls and O.A.R. as live entertainment on June 5 and 6. The concerts wrap around the annual Belmont Stakes. The NYRA will host a Belmont Stakes Eve concert on Friday, June 5. Univision is borrowing a page from ESPN’s mid-July ESPY sports awards extravaganza as it will be creating its version, Premios Univision Deportes, to be telecast on December 20.

The New York Jets took it on the chin from nearly everyone in the media for accepting close to $400,000 from The Department of Defense for holding on-field ceremonies honoring those who have served our country. Congressman Peter King pointed out the team contributes more than $1 million every year to non-profits that benefit both veterans and currently serving military personnel. Given the multi-billion dollar annual military budget, the amount that the Jets and other NFL teams receive is not even a blip on the radar screen. This is a gigantic non-story. Longtime Madison Square Garden photographer George Kalinsky, who has had several books published, was honored with a plaque at the MSG’s Walk Of Fame. Kalinsky was honored last month along with former Knicks star Harry Gallatin, legendary Rangers goaltender Eddie Giacomin, and The Grateful Dead. New York Racing Association officials had to have been thrilled that American Pharaoh was able to win the Preakness on a muddy track two weeks after coming from behind to take the Kentucky Derby. The potential for a Triple Crown winner always brings out a large crowd to Belmont Park for the Belmont Stakes. The question is whether marginal fans are tired of seeing horses always fall short of horse racing immortality at Belmont; there has not been a Triple Crown winner since 1977 (Affirmed). A pair of new books should please fans of the New York Mets: Numbers Don’t Lie: Mets (Triumph Books), by Russ Cohen and Adam Raider, is a clever paperback that uses numbers such as Pedro Feliciano’s 92 relief appearances in 2010; Ed Kranepool’s 18 seasons as a Met;

Michael Garry’s Game Of My Life (Sports Publishing) is a compendium of interviews that the author conducted with former Mets such as Ed Charles, Kranepool, John Stearns, Mookie Wilson and many others as well as current players such as Jon Niese, David Wright, and Daniel Murphy about their best games playing for the team from Flushing. As for the current team, The Mets must get far better offensive production from its reserves Ruben Tejada George and John Kalinsky Mayberry, Jr.; outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis was actually hitting below .100 and eventually was cut. To be fair, a few subs have been atrophying on the bench; considering that right fielder Curtis Granderson and left fielder Michael Cuddyer are aging, it would make sense for manager Terry Collins to give his veterans some days off as the weather heats up, which in turn would give their understudies some playing time.

Pitch Perfect 2

Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Katey Sagal, Skylar Austin, Pen Platt, Anna Camp Directed by Elizabeth Banks Universal

Frankly, the biggest thing that caught our interest when reviewing the pre-release notes for this sequel to Pitch Perfect, the unexpected teen hit, were four simple words: “Directed by Elizabeth Banks.” We realized she was one of the driving forces as a producer from the first film, but this, his directorial debut, seemed startling; one of the most unique presences in Hollywood, Banks has portrayed everything from a sex kitten to a doting wife to a gritty cop in letter-perfect fashion. Still young, it was a surprise that Banks would opt to take a role behind the lens instead of in front of one. But then again, maybe it shouldn’t have: Recently, we were sitting in our doctor’s office when a short and funny public service film about women’s heart attacks hit the screen in the waiting room – and at the end of the segment were the words “Directed by Elizabeth Banks.” Clearly, this is a star with serious aspirations – and lo and behold, now she has a directed a sequel which actually is a far superior, far funnier movie than the original picture.

Banks manages to do what any good comedy director does: She manages to turn characters that could have been trite cartoons into real, compex individuals that the audience can care about, and she manages to do so without giving up the humor and sass that made the first movie such a surprise hit. This time, the college-aged female a cappella group from the first film, The Barden Bellas, suffers a public relations meltdown, and naturally the best way to get back on top is for the girls to work together again and win yet another competition. It all leads to an ending number that will no doubt be worth the price of admission for this series’ rabid (unexpectely,

this movie landed at #1 the weekend of its release, crushing the Mad Max sequel), loyal, nolonger-a-cult audience. Most of the attention from the press goes to Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), who is truly an indelible, sassy character that will be quoted and copied for years to come – she certainly gets the best jokes written for her by the talented Kay Cannon – but the best performance here goes to Anna Kendrick, who is standing right at the cusp of youth and adulthood, a crossroads that can be either terrifying or liberating. Also shining is Hailee Steinfeld as Emily, who is so peppy it seems her diet is mainly Pop Tarts, and Brittany Snow (Chloe), who seems born to be a movie star. With its bright, attractive cast and never-say-die attitude, Pitch Perfect 2 is a youth-oriented film that even full-grown adults an enjoy. Imagine that.

light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens. In a 20-year recording career that began when he was just 16, Shepherd has established himself as a popular recording artist, a consistently in-demand live act and an influential force in a worldwide resurgence of interest in the blues. At 16 years old, Shepherd signed his first record deal and burst onto the national scene with the release of his 1995 debut album Ledbetter Heights, which produced the radio hits "Deja Voodoo," "Born With A Broken Heart" and "Shame, Shame, Shame." His relentless touring and success on rock radio helped to drive that album, and many since, to platinum sales status. In 2013, Shepherd further expanded his musical horizons by teaming with veteran rockers Stephen Stills and Barry Goldberg to form The Ride, whose first album Can’t Get Enough helped to expand Shepherd’s audience as well as his musical resume. Sixteen years ago, at the age of 16, Jonny Lang found success with the release of his major label debut album, Lie To Me. Fame does not seem to have impacted him from being the same country farm boy from Fargo, North Dakota who got his start in the local clubs of Minneapolis. The greatest blues musician of all time, B.B. King, died on May 14 at his home in Las Vegas. What follows is a personal rememberance by blues singer Robert Charels. I was a traveling blues musician for more than 15 years; I was lucky enough to record and rub shoulders with some of the best musicians in my genre. However, when I first met my wife-to-be in 1994, I told her I had a band and loved to sing the blues, and I was on the verge of recording my first album. She responded: "Well, I work for B.B King." I thought my being a musician would impress her, but as it turned out, she and Tina France worked for none other than the great B.B. King and his managers Sid Seidenberg and Floyd Lieberman, and it was a career she loved for more than two decades. After she told me what she did for a living, I guessed being a blues singer didn't impress her, but somehow, I won her over. She's a real music industry pro, and still is – Billboard Magazine actually noted our marriage in print, citing me as a singer, her as a member of B.B. King's team. I always say I married way above my head. She introduced me to Mr. King just days after we met, and from that point on, B.B. and I became genuine friends. Now that he has died, I look back and remember all the incredible times I was lucky

enough to share with this genuine music legend and this truly warm, loving man. Mr. King had heard one of my albums, and at times he invited me to perform with him at some club gigs here in New York, in Nashville, and other smaller venues that he'd play. I never boasted about this, but today I say with pride: I performed with B.B. King

made B.B. King the greatest blues performer of all time. Of course, there’s that thick guitar tone and his dusky, rich voice – but to me, it was his heart. In his prime, he'd close his shows with one of his biggest hits – the love song “Guess Who” – and he'd sing it to his audience with everything he had, every time. He performed it with his heart, and he never sang a lyric or played a note that didn't come directly from that big, loving place. Everything about B.B. King came from his heart. He truly loved to perform live; it was his entire life. And he sincerely appreciated his fans as much as he loved to play for them; I can't imagine any celebrity ever signed more autographs or gave away more photos or guitar picks. Show after show, night after night, he'd stay late and greet countless fans and business associates. He was impossible not to admire ... and love. For a blues singer, I feel as if I was touched by God. Billy Gibbons recently said something similar, and I must agree: I cannot imagine a world without B.B. King. He was the true king of the blues, one of the greatest musicians of all time – yet this great man spent time with a guy like me. Now that he’s gone, I finally realize what blessings are.

King, Garry Tallent, Coco Montoya, and so many others. Another amazing jam was at B.B.'s New York City club, and that show featured John Mayer, Jon Paris, and a full stage of stars. But that was pure B.B. King – if he knew you were a blues musician, he invited you to get up and play with him. My relationship with B.B. King went further than music. He always made myself and my wife feel like we were part of his family, and when we came to see him, anything could happen. He'd introduce us to stars like Buddy Guy or Les Paul; he's always allow us to come and visit his lavish tour bus and his dressing room. He'd tell funny stories about being a Memphis blues deejay early in his career and having to advertise products like the health tonic Pepticon and the laxative Swiss Kriss. And always, he'd give me career advice about making records and about being professional. I eventually went on to record three albums in total, and I always felt his presence during the making of each one – I always hoped he’d like my work. He even thanked me for covering “Troubles Troubles Troubles,” one of his earliest recordings. To be praised by such a man was a thrill. I could write about 1,000 experiences and about 1,000 more warm memories, but to be succinct: My wife worked for B.B., I got to know him, and we both loved this man very much. He was generous with his musical advice and in every other way I can think of. I was invited to spend time with him socially, and it is one of the great blessings of my time on this planet. His death has left me utterly dazed and sad beyond words. He is and will always be one of the major people of my life. My family and my musician friends have all met him, and I’d wager they feel the same way. People have always asked me what it was that

What memories: One jam in Nashville featured so many great stars on one stage, I felt utterly intimidated to step on stage – performing were B.B.

“Ladies and gentlemen, from Los Angeles California: The Doors!” Those were the words spoken minutes before the music began at this muchanticipated concert. Following openers The Silverbirds and the amazing Adam Ezra Group, Krieger, the self-taught guitarist from Los Angeles and a founding member of The Doors, was set to take stage and was ready to play like it was a warm summer night in 1967. The intimate Paramount was the perfect venue to recreate the mystic energy and tunes of The Doors. As Krieger and his band took the stage, they started with what at first seemed to be “Break On Through” – but bled into “Dead Cats, Dead Rats,” something The Doors occasionally did with Jim Morrison. But this wasn’t Jim on stage; this was a unique twist Krieger added to his show almost 45 years later. Krieger's son, Waylon, has taken the lead singer role in Morrison’s place – big boots to fill, and some in the crowd were not too responsive to the techniques and antics Waylon employed. Some would say Waylon struck out, but others would probably

argue he did exactly what Jim Morrison used tgo, riling up the crowd to hurl boos, chants, and vulgarity towards him. At one point, Waylon even walked off the stage; Morrison received the same responses at some concerts and events, but just as in the 60s, Krieger played on. “Spanish Caravan,”“Wild Child,” Back Door Man,” and “Moonlight Drive” kept most of the crowd's attention on the music rather than Waylon, and at times the group sounded just like the original Doors. Krieger played long – very long – until after midnight (unheard of in this era), and even covered The Beatles' “Eleanor Rigby” as a solo instrumental to end the night. As Krieger left the stage, one concertgoer exclaimed: “I never thought I would see this in my life; it may not have been the original Doors, but it was damn close and worth it!” This was true – this was something that doesn't exist in rock & roll as often as it once did. For better or for worse, this was a bonafide classic rock show to its core.

Fans chanted “BLS! BLS!” as Black Label Society met their “Doom Crew” and tore the roof off this club with a high octane performance. Frontman Zakk Wylde proved his exceptional skill on both acoustic and electric guitars, bringing out numerous axes while performing “Losin’ Your Mind,” “House Of Doom,” “Angel Of Mercy,” and ending the night with an acoustic version of “Stillborn.” Every song BLS performed was spot on, never missing a key or note and playing some of the songs better than the original studio recordings. Every member played exceptionally thoroughout, and kept the crowd highly entertained. This performance the first night of the group's 12-show “Unblackened Tour,” and BLS was ready to kick things off with a bang. Wylde, in his usual style, unleashed an array of tricks from his guitar strap, from long, complicated solos and licks to hard-rocking, crowd-pleasing

screams and chants continued to pour into the streets, ending the night the way it began.

song choices, this band brings a presence to their shows that’s unlike most in the industry today. “Doom Crew” vests and shirts were worn all around the venue; the crowd knew all the words to every song, it they packed the main floor to the brim, allowing no space for any weak souls to get in front. There was even a mosh pit that seemed too dangerous for even the most hardy moshers – this was a rugged rock and roll show, and its exactly what the fans ordered. Chants and screams ended the night when Zakk came out and raised his arms, feeding off the crowd’s energy, asking them to make some noise before they exited the stage for the final time. Indulgent Lucie Searching For The Masses

RHYTHM TRACKING Taylor's Time: The yearly Billboard Music Awards show was recently televised, and it left several conclusions – the first being that Taylor Swift is The Beatles of 2015. She won hands down in just about every category where she was eligible – and in reality was the only person to, as the music industry puts it, “move product.” Swift's CD and digital download album, 1989, has sold millions of copies in a time when nothing sells millions of copies. By doing so, she proves that she has an enormous fan base, and with that you can clearly still sell millions of albums. This all comes about despite all the naysayers who claim that this sort of thing can't happen anymore (and, at some point, I've probably said the same thing myself). Swift initially built a strong following as a country artist, but her teen appeal helped her cross over to the pop market almost instantly. She aligned herself with pop and Top 40

marketing, I must say. The WBLI morning team, Dana and Jayson, was recently debating if Swift is “hot,” and the ticket was split, but both sides of the discussion had merit. In my opinion, Swift is not “sexy” hot, not in a “slutty,” overtly sexual way, and there's plenty of that out there already. Swift has wisely chosen a safer path, and is, in a reflection on our times, “nerd sexy.” She obviously can appeal to "Big Bang Theory”-type boys; the path to Slutsville has been worn down to a nub, and Swift seems refreshing as a result. By keeping her legs closed and her public statement on a PG scale, she stands out from the crowd. Smart girl, smart management team, smart record label, smart everything. As for the rest of the Billboard Music Award show, it certainly was a mixed bag, but as is usual with these sorts of events, there was nothing overly surprising: Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Iggy Azalea, Nicki

"Shake It Off" is one of the most brilliant contemporary pop songs that money can buy, featuring the correct writers and the correct producers. The fan base that Swift built during her country music origins stayed with her, and she now has added a huge pop following to the equation. The result: Taylor Swift is now the supreme ruler of the pop music industry. She is a non-stop publicity machine, and presents herself in a non threatening, almost asexual way so that Grandma will choose her CD when picking out a present for the grandkids at WalMart – and then again, Granny might buy another one for herself. Very smart

Minaj, and all the other girls did their best to be over-the-top sexy, and in the process sort of canceled each other out. Whose breasts or butt is the biggest hasn't been helping them all sell many albums lately, and their cookie cutter songs and antics have begun to wear thin with young America – just check the charts. Nick Jonas did a great job with "Jealous"; the four remaining members of One Direction got the gals to scream (and, indeed, they released a great album last year); and Kanye West got himself censored to bits while performing "All Day" and "Black Skinhead" for the show's finale. Hozier and Ed Sheeran also took impressive turns, but nothing in particular was jaw dropping … except for the massive ongoing success of Taylor Swift.
