sold-out tours and Top 10 hits — Musgraves participated in her first (and only) beauty pageant. “My hometown is pretty famous for its sweet potatoes,” she says, “and every year, they hold the Golden Sweet Potato Festival. They crown a Sweet Potato Queen and a Little Miss Tater Tot for little girls. I only

competed for Little Miss Tater Tot once, when I was about three, and lost miserably to a girl in a sparklier dress.” The pageant world, with its fake smiles and sky-high hairdos, wasn’t the best match for Musgraves. She was more interested in songwriting, finishing her first tune at 9 years old and learning her first instrument,

the mandolin, as a preteen. Years later, though, the peculiarities of daily life in a small town — along with the places she’s visited (and people she’s met) since moving away — are back on her mind. It’s been years since Musgraves lived in Golden, Texas, her childhood home of roughly 600 people, but the whirlwind that followed Same Trailer Different Park — a debut album that topped the country charts, took home two Grammy Awards (including Country Album of the Year) and sent Musgraves halfway across the world on tour — made her think hard about where she came from. Pageant Material, her second album, pays tribute to those Bible Belt roots, shining a light on a hometown girl who’s grown up, expanded her worldview and done a lot of livin’ since skipping town. It’s an album about where she’s from and where she’s going, full of autobiographical details that are humorous and heartwarming.

Knicks president Phil Jackson knew that he was behind the proverbial eight-ball even before Thursday’s proceedings, because he had no luck in last month’s draft lottery that determined order of teams picking players. The ping-pong balls worked against the Knicks, who in the old days would have had the second pick based on their putrid 17-65 record. Jackson decided to roll the dice by selecting Porzingis, 19, who has played professionally in Seville, Spain and has reminded many of a young Dirk Nowitzki. The Knicks fans at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, site of the Draft, lustily booed the selection. Porzingis, who speaks better English than a lot of Americans, displayed poise by taking it all in stride. He told the media that he understood that NBA fans were far more familiar with college hoops stars thanks to American television than they were with European pros. The big concern for fans is whether the rail-thin Porzingis is ready to be a major contributor to the Knicks. The media had a field day with the pick, because apparently superstar Carmelo Anthony has his doubts about Porzingis’ ability to improve the Knicks immediately. “Melo” may be right, but given the current state of the Knicks it would be absurd to expect the team to be a serious contender for an NBA title next season. Jackson can breathe a sigh of relief in knowing that a longtime habitue of Madison Square Garden’s “celebrity row,” actor Steve Schirripa (who played Bobby Baccala on HBO’s “The Sopranos” and recently launched his own line of pasta sauces, “Uncle Steve’s”) is impressed with Porzingis’s height and talent. It’s always a smart idea to please a cast member of “The Sopranos!” Although he knew little about baseball, Kristaps

Ted 2

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Barth, Morgan Freeman, Dennis Haysbert, Patrick Warburton, Michael Dorn Directed by Seth MacFarlane Universal

“Newlywed couple Ted and Tami-Lynn want to have a baby, but in order to qualify to be a parent, Ted will have to prove he's a person in a court of law.” – Universal Pictures' plot synopsis for Ted 2

Don't blame Hollywood – blame yourselves, America. There are so many terrible things that audiences have not only accepted but made bonafide hits out of during the past 50 years that make that eternal question, What were we thinking?, seems woefully inadequate. From the “Batman” TV series to “Gilligan's Island” to Zager & Evans and The Cowsills all the way to “The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills” and “The Jerry Springer Show” to Nicki Minaj and Nickelback, North America has a lot to apologize to the rest of the world for … those things, of course, as well as not one but two “comedy films” featuring a talking stuffed bear. If anyone's counting, the wildly overrated Seth McFarlane shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a film lens ever again; apparently, the flops of TV's “Dads” and his horrific last feature, A Million Ways To Die In the West, haven't been enough to prompt studios such as Universal to shut off the green The Stony Brook Film Festival is celebrating 20 years this summer, and the organizers of this popular summer movie tradition been proud to showcase many films with actors who have gone on to successful careers, including Jeremy Renner, Kristen Stewart, Virginia Madsen, Elle Fanning, and more. Screened in Staller Center's Main Stage Theatre at Stony Brook University, the 20th annual Stony Brook Film Festival promises to entertain, enlighten, and challenge. An international selection of new independent features, documentaries, and shorts will be shown throughout 10 evenings, from Thursday, July 16 through Saturday, July 25, with many premieres in the mix. Programming for the Festival has followed a popular format over the years, pairing short films with features. The schedule of films is avaiable at stonybrookfilmfestival.com, where $85 film festival

light; all that “Family Guy” cred can't last forever if this low level of quality keeps up. And make no mistake – Ted 2 has no reason to exist other than to prove people will buy anything, even at $12 a clip backed by an $8 popcorn-and-soda “special.” If you at least saw TV ads for the original Ted film, you know that a stuffed bear come to life is a foul-mouthed, rude, vicious, mean-spirited, slovenly creep. Since these qualities aren't considered positive attributes for people, why are they considered “funny” because they come from a toy? And if you come to see Ted 2, expect a lot of cum; there are more semen and masturbation jokes in this film than offered in any media since the July 2012 issue of Hustler. That seems to be the level of audience this film strives for – or perhaps it's the

11-year-old that yells “pee pee!” and laughs hysterically at his own cleverness. Either way, this movie is the cinematic equivalent of Hungry Hungry Hippos, which that same slob kid managed to smash into pieces the first time he played with it. The worst part of all this is that the cast does what it can; none of the performances can be designated as faulty. Mark Wahlberg as John is about as likable as he's ever been; Jessica Barth as Ted's “wife,” Tami-Lynn, is as capable at comedy as she is beautiful. Amanda Seyfried is neither good nor bad as a perpetually stoned family counselor; there are great cameos from Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, among about a dozen others. Trust us: Any laughs you find here don't come from that annoying, oversized plush toy. Photo: This Isn’t Funny by Peter Borosh

acclaimed album, Machine Head, with Ian Gillan on vocals. The record features both "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water," a song inspired by The Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland burning to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert. Today, the band features original drummer Ian Paice, vocalist Ian Gillan, the legendary 10 • Good Times Magazine - July 14 - 27, 2015

producer and bassist Roger Glover, former Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse, and keyboardist Donald Airey. Best known for hits such as "Hush," "Black Night," “Drifter,” "Strange Kind Of Woman" and "Woman From Tokyo," in 2013 Deep Purple released Now What?!, their first new album in seven years. Also recently released is the newly

re-mastered classic, Live In Japan, featuring seminal live recordings of "Highway Star," "Smoke On The Water" and "Space Truckin'." Despite their longevity, Deep Purple can boast of an ever-increasing fan base; not resting on yesteryear, the band has released four studio albums since 1996, a total augmented by an abundance of solo work.

Decadia

K.J. Farrell's, Bellmore July 27 at 10 PM kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925

This eight-piece band is fronted by three outstanding singers – no wonder this 80s tribute show has made such area waves during the past year. The long-lasting The Touch opens the show at 7 pm. So how long have they lasted? Consider: The Touch was named “Best New Band” by Good Times Magazine ... in 1985. 14 • Good Times Magazine - July 14 - 27, 2015

Once again, Mucahy's hosts a major music event: An evening with one of pop's most unique performers, known by his Hebrew and stage name of Matisyahu ("Gift Of God"); he's an American reggae rapper and alternative rock musician. There's nobody else like him anywhere, and he's become an unprecedented chart and concert success; here's an opportunity to hear him up up close and personal in the intimate environment of this world class nightspot.

Fred The Human iPod Tap Room, Patchogue Fridays at 6 PM • patchoguetaproom.com (631) 569-5577

Patchogue's popular craft beer bar has a second attraction – Fred Maloney, better known by his stage handle of Fred The Human iPod. Failure, one of the most influential trios in alt rock history, makes its debut on Saturday, July 18 at 8 pm at The Space At Westbury. Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster.com; for more information, log on to thespaceastwestbury.com. The stop at The Space is one of the first on Failure’s current tour in support of ther justreleased new album, The Heart Is A Monster. “Thematically we’ve moved from the outer space of Fantastic Planet to inner space,” said guitar/bass player Greg Edwards of the new album, the band’s first full-length since 1996. “From the dislocation of one’s identity to the complete erasing of it by sleep and dreams. I think we’ve used instrumentation in the service of mood and emotion to an even

greater degree than on our previous records.” The band returned from a 17-year hiatus in early 2014 with a single Los Angeles date planned. The show sold out in seconds, which led to a North American tour, including a run of dates with Tool and appearances at Riot Fest, Fun Fun Fun, and Cinquanta, and eventually back to the studio. In a recent interview with Noisey, singer/guitar/bass

player Ken Andrews admits by the time the band announced their first live outing, he, Edwards and drummer Kellii Scott were already working on new music, saying: “One thing that Greg and I agreed on very early on, is that we did not want to reform for just one or two nostalgia tours. We wanted to come back as a full functioning musical force and creatively pick up where we left off with Fantastic Planet. That meant we needed to start experimenting in the studio first, which we did in late 2013. After a few months, we came to the conclusion that we were having a good time and that we liked the results, and

that we thought the results were definitely Failure. We’ve been chipping away at a new album this whole time.” In that same article, Andrews and Edwards said that their approach to writing and recording Fantastic Planet and The Heart Is A Monster have been similar, saying “The songs on Fantastic Planet appear more or less in the order that we wrote them … when, we do a song now, we write it and record it soup-to-nuts without moving to another song … It takes longer, but it makes more sense for us artistically to explore a song completely before you move on.”

They’re new to America, but Long Island’s horror rockers Kidding Candice are breaking out in a big way. Recently signed to Victory Records, the group will perform on July 26 as part of The Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival along with Feed Her To The Sharks, Sister Sin, Jungle Rot, Shattered Sun and more at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on the Victory Stage; Slayer and King Diamond headline the Fest. Log on to ticketmaster.com for tickets and information. “Pretty, ugly, gross, bloody, pissed, catchy, heavy." These are the words spewed from Kissing Candice frontman Joey Simpson when describing the band’s new album, Blind Until We Burn, released on June 30 on Victory. According to its release press, the

OH, THE HORROR!

LI’s Kissing Candice Comes Home To Bloody Jones Beach

new effort is “one of the most blooddrenched doses of violence that has been put to ears. Distinct themes of angry defiance and horror-laced hysteria snake throughout the album.” Formed in 2012 from the remnants of the Long Island-based Dr. Acula, keyboardist and sample mastermind Simpson was

looking to start a project that would combine metal, hardcore, industrial, and electronic music in a unique and cinematic fashion. Taking on the role of frontman, Joey hit the studio with producer Jeremy Comitas, and the pair were the first to glue the Kissing Candice sound together with the debut EP, Murder. As guitarists Tommy “Dreamer” Sciro, Walter Dicristina, and bassist Mike Grippo joined the band, their ideas soon spilled into the mix.

“The result is a spirited chunk of roughed-up American metal that is an amalgamation of serial killer thriller, dark romance, and witchcraft, woven in a world of hallucinating demons,” stated a press release. Yes, fans, for a toe-tapping (or severing) good time, Kissing Candice assuredly puts the rugged in rock; they’re clearly an experience unlike any other in the music world ... and the mayhem’s just started.

The Long Island-based rock & roll heartthrob Justin Ryan and his team have announced a new partnership with Station, the hot New York City-based rock act. Ryan will be the exclusive drummer for Station, providing the edge featured in the group’s high energy, 17-song live show. Station's new self-titled album was recorded at Westfall Music Company in Farmingdale with producers Anthony Lopardo and Ray Marte. “I'm thrilled to be associated with Station,” said Ryan, known to many of his fans as “J.R.” “The boys are premier entertainers with a long history of excellence in their craft." in 2015. He'll be doing a series of shows in the coming months, so track him on Facebook or elsewhere on social media – then one day you'll be able to brag that you saw him in the early days. When you hear "Fallin'" on the radio, remember where you read about it first! Ant-Man Arrives: In the pop culture department, I have not made a secret of my longtime devotion to Marvel and the subsequent films that have been spawned by the comic book heroes. Of particular interest to me was Ant-Man; I had a letter printed in Entertainment Weekly years ago, when the first Avengers film was released. I bemoaned the exclusion of original Avengers Ant-Man and The Wasp, who, for reasons then unknown, were not given their place at the table alongside Iron Man, Thor, and The Hulk, who were also part of the original lineup. Entertainment Weekly turned my brief letter into a half-page feature about the two missing characters; shortly thereafter, Marvel went into high gear about getting the Ant-Man project, which had reportedly been stalled by Edgar Wright, off the ground. Now, a star-studded lineup including Michael Douglas, Paul Rudd, and Evangeline Lilly finally hits heaters as a 2015 summer blockbuster, and a large, triumphant grin takes control of my face. Mission accomplished!

Rolling Thunders: The flow of goodies related to the late, great New York Doll and Heartbreaker, Johnny Thunders, continues unabated. Last year, everything was about Looking For Johnny (the film and soundtrack album). This year, some great lost live gigs make their way into our hands. The international indie label of the year, Jungle Records U.K., has released a multi color-splash vinyl double album of the lost, legendary Heartbreakers: Live At Max's Kansas City release, which includes the original full show as well as never-before released tracks that were destined for a Live! Vol. 2 that never saw the light of day. It hit the streets on Record Store Day and is already one of the most sought-after items from that event; it's already almost impossible to find (I bought mine via Amazon.com). Also: The Cleopatra Records label has released a CD gatefold package, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers L.A.M.F. – Live At The Village Gate 1977, which is a dynamic and exciting trip back to the glory that was New York City punk. I actually covered and wrote about this show in the "Punk" issue of Good Times in 1977, when I was a mere child and Kurt Loder was my "entertainment editor" (and a fan of Jimi LaLumia & The Psychotic Frogs, and punk in general). If you remem-

ber this stuff, you'll want to own the Max's and Village Gate releases, and if you're too young to remember but love real, attitudedriven punk, you need this even more than the AARP cardholders do. Enjoy, rock out this summer, and don't miss Ant-Man!

LI Favorite Goes Right To #1

Kelsea Ballerini:

Young country artist Kelsea Ballerini’s debut single “Love Me Like You Mean It” topped both the Mediabase and Billboard Country Airplay Charts for the first time in late June. The hit

co-written by Ballerini earns her a spot alongside only 10 of country music’s leading women – including Faith Hill, Trisha Yearwood, and Carrie Underwood – who have achieved a #1 with their debut single. Additionally, Ballerini’s #1 marks the first time a solo female has landed at #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in nearly three years (since Carrie Underwood’s "Blown Away" on November 3, 2012). “Going into this, my goal with this first single was to introduce myself,” said Ballerini, who wowed the audience at the huge “Girls With Guitars” country night at The Patchogue Theatre a few months back. “I believed in this song from the minute we wrote it, and I always thought it would be the right first single and a great introduction of me … To be in a group with artists like Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill and Deana Carter that have had debut #1s and then had brilliant careers after that, makes me so excited for what’s to come. “ Crowned one of CMT’s “Next Women Of Country,” Ballerini has been on the rise with shout-outs from superstars such as Taylor Swift, Little Big Town, Kristian Bush, and “The Today Show’s” Hoda Kotb. Ballerini has also landed on several 2015 “Ones to Watch” lists, including Billboard, Country Weekly, Rolling Stone Country, The Huffington Post, Radio.com, and Spotify. She’s not hard to find; since her single debut, fans have been reaching out to her on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube in record numbers on those platforms.

New Set; Huge Tour

The Rolling Stones:

Jess Glynne

As The Rolling Stones have embarked on a huge U.S. Tour (a photo from their recent show at the Orange Bowl in Orlando is shown here), Eagle Rock Enetertainment has unleashed a real collector's item: The Rolling Stones From The Vault: The Marquee – Live In 1971 is now available on DVD in three formats and iTunes. The show marked the first time that “Brown Sugar,” “Dead Flowers,” “Bitch,” and “I Got The Blues” were showcased live; the Stone's lineup at this time was Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Mick Taylor. Coming Our Way From The UK

Jess Glynne:

Jess Glynne has announced details of her new album, I Cry When I Laugh – the UK-based singer/songwriter’s first full-length solo release – which arrives on September 11. She'll celebrate its release on her inaugural

Stunning U.K. chanteuse Gabrielle Aplin, who made waves in this country with last year's English Rain EP, will mark her official U.S. debut with the release of Light Up The Dark on September 18. The album follows her overseas success, where she's enjoyed #1 chart positions in both the U.K. and Australia. The new album features title track "Light Up The Dark," mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Florence + The Machine). Aplin drew inspiration largely from her longtime idol Joni Mitchell. "Her voice is just here, right at the front, and everything sits around it perfectly," said Aplin, adding, "I've also become much more comfortable writing songs about other people's stories as well as my own.”
