Film Reviews
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Hugh Grant, Jared Harris, Elizabeth Debicki Directed by Guy Ritchie Warner Brothers
Repeat after us, Hollywood, and thank us in the morning: “Re-imagining” a TV series or film from the 1960s gives the current generation of movie-goers no point of reference, and you're going to have a bomb on your hands even if the film is good. Hollywood, you're not going to listen, are you? Even as these words are being typed, word leaked that there is going to be a sequel to The Three Stooges, a film that did only moderately well three years ago. In addition, there are plans for sequels or remakes of the following in the next couple of years: All Quiet On The Western Front (!), The Birds, Creature From The Black Lagoon, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, The Naked Gun (?), and many more. It's as if Hollywoo doesn't even care about originality or creativity any longer. Which brings us to this “re-do” of the 1960s TV series that originally featured Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. Here, the director formerly known as “Mr. Madonna” seems to go through the motions of a James Bond film. There's a school of thought that this
By Cody Bell film really had a chance to be a hit (it followed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and precedes the next James Bond film, Spectre), but U.N.C.L.E. pretty much cried “uncle” the moment it was released, barely making a blip in the Top 10. Talk about not even trying to find an audience: This film is set in 1963, which today's generation believes is when George Washington founded America riding a

dinosaur. Agents Napoleon Solo (Cavill) and Russian genius Illya Kuryakin (Hammer) try to stop a criminal supergroup trying to build a nuke. Amazingly, there's so little action here that it defies logic; our two leads spend most of the time strutting around in expensive suits, cracking wise, and being wily enough to escape danger – not exactly a pulse-pounding thrill ride. Looks at if Guy Ritchie hasn't learned his lesson; his next film: Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur. Bet it won't be as good as even Monty Python's version.

Monty Python & The Holy Grail Limited Edition Castle Catapult Gift Set [Blu-ray] (October 27): Not only do you get the classic comedy film on remastered Blu-ray, but you also get catapult packaging and rubber farm animals to play with. Wow, is this stupid. Wow … we've ordered ours already, and a few more as gifts. Aloft (September 29): An accident tears a mother and son apart. Jennifer Connelly's best performance in years; an exceptional “small” film. Marvel's Avengers: The Age Of Ultron (October 2): Like the Python set, this one should come with an extra: Ear plugs. Pitch Perfect 2 (Today, September 22): It's amazing how this simple musical comedy packed in youthful crowds.
Midwestern town to help his brother, a real lawyer (Fred Savage), win cases in “The Grinder.” Another 80s heartthrob, John Stamos, is a bachelor who discovers that not only did he father a child, but is now a granddad as well in “Grandfathered.” Miami is the locale for “Rosewood,” where Morris Chestnut is a pathologist who enjoys solving open murder cases. CW: This network has attracted young males with “The Flash” and “Arrow.” Last year, The CW achieved its first hit since “Gossip Girl” with “Jane The Virgin.” This year, they may top that success with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” starring Rachel Bloom as a New York attorney who moves on a whim to Los Angeles. In addition to comedy, expect to see numerous song and dance routines. The Others: Billy Eichner moves his “Billy On The Street” interview show to Tru TV after three seasons on Fuse. Tru TV is also launches a reality comedy, “Adam Ruins Everything,” starring comic Adam Conover … TBS will spoof “Lost” with “Wrecked,” a comedy about survivors of a plane crash on a deserted island … Former CNBC show host Donny Deutsch will play a fictional talk show host on “Donny!” on the popular USA Network … Generating talk is Amazon Prime's resumed“Hand Of God,” the gritty drama starring Ron Perlman and Dana Delaney.

T
he TV industry has done a better job at introducing shows throughout the year, but there is no doubt that the fall is when the networks want to make a splash. Yes, there are more cable television networks than ever, and digital-based Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, and others are catching an increasing amount of eyeballs – but it’s still the networks that generate the lion’s share of the buzz. Here's what
The New TV Season: Mega-Hits, Misses, & More Superheroes By Lloyd Carroll
to expect this season from every network: CBS: The “Tiffany Network” remains America’s most watched. CBS is so successful that in order to introduce new shows, its programming department had to defer the new seasons of such ratings winners as “2 Broke Girls,” “Mike & Molly,” and “The Odd Couple” to early 2016. Having NFL games on Thursday night for the

second straight season also reduces the amount of available primetime real estate. A promising new offering is the sitcom “Angel From Hell,” in which an uptight dermatologist is befriended, whether she likes it or not, by a foul-mouthed guardian angel played by Jane Lynch in a tailor-made role. The network is taking risks: “Supergirl” starring Melissa Benoist is the kind of DC Comics fare that one expects from CBS’s corporate sibling, The CW Network. “Limitless” is a tale about a man who can unleash all of the compartments of a brain by taking a pill; it's based on the 2011 Bradley Cooper film of the same name. The biggest concern is whether Stephen Colbert will be able to fill David
Letterman’s big shoes each late night; of lesser concern is “The Big Bang Theory,” which shows no sign of ceasing to be the biggest hit comedy program on network TV. NBC: The “Peacock Network” seemed to be on life support, but it has turned things around thanks to “Sunday Night Football” and “The Voice.” Scripted programming hasn’t fared as well, but “The Mysteries Of Laura” and “The Blacklist” enter their second and third seasons. NBC is counting on Neil Patrick Harris to revive the variety show with “Best Time Ever.” Wesley Snipes stars in “The Player,” which based on previews is full of Las Vegas action, but the plot seems hard to follow. The program which might generate the most initial buzz is the turgid drama “Blindspot.” “People Are Talking” appears to be a routine couples comedy that probably won’t stick around for long. ABC: Times have been tough in the Nielsens for ABC, which is relying on Kermit and Miss Piggy to draw viewers in the latest installment of “The Muppets.” The gimmick here is that America’s favorite porcine puppet hosts a fictitious talk show that draws A-list celebrities. Ken Jeong (“The Hangover”) stars in a comedy, “Dr. Ken”; Jeong was actually a physician before turning to acting. Don Johnson and Chace Crawford star as members of a wealthy North Dakota family in “Blood & Oil.” Fox: As “American Idol” has gone, so has Fox – ratings have sunk to the point that its coming season will be its last. The new show which should generate the most interest in the celebrity magazines is “Scream Queens,” which stars a bevy of young actresses (Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Ariana Grande, and Abigail Breslin) as sorority sisters in a college where students are getting bumped off each week; Jamie Lee Curtis plays a dean. Rob Lowe portrays an actor whose “Perry Mason”-like show gets cancelled and returns to his small

SportsBeat Al Arbour
Given his importance to Long Island sports, it would be injudicious not to note the passing of Al Arbour, the head coach who led the New York Islanders to four straight Stanley Cups (1980 through 1983) and almost to a fifth straight as they lost to Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers in 1984. Arbour was 82; he had been battling Alzheimer’s Disease. Arbour did not have a largerthan-life personality; in press conferences, he’d come off as unassuming (his bookish glasses probably helped in that regard), and always gave credit to his players, who obviously were quite good. It is noteworthy that Arbour died just before the Islanders will be playing home games in
BOWLING
G
et Your 900 Number: We continue our look at new releases for the 2015/2016 season from the top bowling ball companies. 900 Global has emeraged as a force in the sport during the past several years, fast becoming a favored imprint among both league bowlers and seasoned PBA professionals such as Jack Jurek and Mark Baker, who is a competing touring star as well as a respected coach. 900 Global now designates their balls into five categories, making it easier for bowlers to choose which “rock” will work best with their games. Here's the rundown: Engineer Series: This series is the very top of 900 Global's line, featuring their newest coverstocks and cores, first introduced to the world in this series. Recently added is the new top-of-the-line Dream Big, which joins Dream On and the original Dream in this popular line of particularly powerful balls. If you hook or crank with authority, look into these professionallevel products. Prime Series: As the name implies, these balls are serious equipment, well-suited for both professional and tournament play. New for this season is the Respect Pearl, which joins the original Repect in this line. These balls have high hook potential. Tour Preferred Series: This special series is designed for use by PBA pros and on sport patterns, designed by veteran PBA star Chris Barnes, who recently joined the company.
Brooklyn. The new era begins October 9, when the Isles host Stanley Cup champs the Chicago Blackhawks at Barclays Center. The Islanders recently displayed a new alternate uniform that shows a variation of the “NY” hockey stick logo in white imposed upon a stark black background. Reaction on social media seemed negative, but that may have had more to do with the team vacating Nassau County than for art aesthetics. The new uniform seems in keeping with Barclays Center, which has a dark nightclub vibe. The new uniform also emulates the simple black-and-white Brooklyn Nets logo. The first reaction upon hearing about agent Scott Boras’ demand that the New York Mets’ Matt Harvey be shut down when he hits the 180-inning limit for this season was to think of it as pure chutzpah. When Harvey seemed to back his agent’s statement, Mets fans immediately screamed for the pitcher’s head. The Mets were in a pennant race; where was Harvey’s loyalty to teammates and fans? On the other hand, would Mets fans have condemned Harvey if this were a typical Mets September? The probably would have complimented Harvey and Boras for seeing the big picture. While Harvey may be one of this writer’s least favorite professional athletes, I can’t blame him for being cautious when it comes to his career; his teammate, pitcher Jeremy Hefner, had to undergo a second Tommy John procedure last fall. I also can understand the frustration of Harvey’s employer, the Mets; not only are they are signing his paychecks, but they have shown prudence in managing both his starts and pitch counts this season. More recently, Harvey has stated that he would pitch in

(think drier lanes) and the already-proven Chemical X. Preferred Series: Well-suited for many of us mere mortals, this series offers versatility and quality on a variety of house shots and tournament conditions – perfect for any bowler who is serious about scoring. New for this season are the just-like-it-sounds Black Ops (perfect for challenging lane conditions as it offers length as well as hook potential), as well as the already popular Breakdown and All Night. Select Series: These balls are quality low-cost options for bowlers who are just picking up the sport, or for experienced keglers wishing to add versatiltity to their arsenals. Added this year is a new Cardinal Redcolored Boost, which joins the four other colors in the line: Purple/Cream, Green/Purple, Blue/Black, and Orange/Yellow. This line offers surprising hitting power, hook potential, and consistency – don't think of these as “starter” balls, as they're worthy additions to anyone's bowling bag. 900 Global also manufactures apparel, bowling ball bags, and two- and three-ball rollers. the post-season, if the team qualifies. Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson raised eyebrows when he told a reporter that he wasn’t sure if men really landed on the moon, and brought up the possibility that July 20, 1969 might have been staged. “How come we haven’t been back there in over 40 years?” he said to me. I reasoned to him that it is expensive to go up there just to pick up more lunar rocks, and that NASA’s attention seems to have shifted to discovering Mars. Granderson laughed when I said that his comments might be helpful in NASA procuring more funding in future federal budgets. In all seriousness, I have

a feeling that Granderson was pulling a few people’s legs with his skepticism. When I asked him if he really doubted that Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, he replied: “It’s 50-50!” No one can accuse St. John’s Red Storm head coach and NBA Hall of Fame inductee Chris Mullin of playing favorites when it comes to New York’s baseball teams. In June, Mullin threw out the first pitch before a Yankees game. In early September, he did the same at Citi Field before the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies. The delightfully folksy Phillies radio voice, Larry Andersen, took a lot of heat from some Mets
fans when he said on Philly’s WPHT that Mets fans who were visiting Citizens Bank Park were obnoxious. Andersen told me a week later when the Phillies came to Citi Field that he was just having fun with Mets fans, and that no one should take him too seriously: “Hey, I never said that our fans weren’t obnoxious. It’s an east coast thing.” He added that both he and the Phillies accounting department were hoping that those same Mets fans would return to Philadelphia the last week of September when the Mets play there again. At the U.S. Open, I asked Rafael Nadal if any of his fellow tennis players were giving him the business about his playful commercial for his eponymous underwear joint venture with Tommy Hilfiger. “Not really. By the way, what did you think of the ads?” he retorted to me with a grin. I told him in Spanish that it showed that he had a good sense of humor about himself. Of course, after getting bounced in the third round of the U.S. Open, he might want to start thinking about wearing Jockey or Hanes. Venus Williams recently received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana University thanks to completing numerous online classes. When asked about how she did in accounting, she replied: “Oh man! I nearly went blind studying for those classes. The good thing is that I have used what I learned.” I asked Sloane Stephens if she was still with AmEx, since her likeness was not on advertising billboards that lined the boardwalk connecting The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to the Willets Point subway station: “No. They decided to go in a different direction.” When I told her that I would only use my Visa card for the rest of the year, she quickly

PERFORMANCE Photos by Christopher Jon Smaragdas
Machine Gun Kelly • The Paramount • Huntington As hip hop always offers new faces, there’s no room for error – so when Machine Gun Kelly headlined this megaclub, he took a page from the books of his musical predecessors, stuck to his guns, and stunned with an honest performance. Before the 25-year-old Cleveland star arrived on stage, video screens of Kelly and his crew staring at the audience through a car windshield were displayed. Soon, the musicians arrived, setting the tone for the night with the hit single “Wild Boy.” Spinning in circles, Kelly took aim at the crowd with super soakers before jumping in to join them. The bass shell-shocked the floors; one concertgoer exclaimed it was a first for The Paramount, since MGK brought an entourage consisting of a DJ, guitarist, bassist, violinist, drummer (Rook), and fellow rapper and hype man, Dub-O. Kelly’s performance was strong, consistent with the sound his fans have come to expect, though at times he was difficult to hear (due to the heavy bass). Some fans might find Kelly’s lyric content controversial, and has rap techniques anything but traditional – fully on display with a cover of “All The Small Things” by
Blink 182, which eventually let to Limp Bizkit’s “My Generation.” Surprisingly, Kelly covered the songs well, and mentioned his last visit to The Paramount was in 2014 with friend Fred Durst and Bizkit. As the band continued to shake the floors, the rapper displayed endless energy and stamina. He unleashed fast-paced lyrics, never missing a breath, while constantly gyrating across the stage and jumping into the crowd. Breezing by the hit “Baddest” (only a snippet, disappointingly), MGK finally got some breathing time when an acoustic guitar was used on “A Little More,” allowing Kelly to vocalize. At one point, Kelly ordered security to escort a female fan (who wore nothing but shorts and Americn flagcolored pasties) onto the stage as a living concert prop. Kelly proved that artists can orchestrate whatever symphony they want, regardless of genre. Not often does a hip hop act bring a multi-instrument group to the stage, and to experince one this wellexecuted gives hope that there are still some talented artists more than willing to expand their musical horizons. – Christopher Jon Smaragdas

Led Zeppelin 2 • Nikon at Jones Beach Theater • Wantagh As we approach the 35-year mark of Led Zeppelin’s demise, it’s good to know they aren’t forgotten: Emerging onstage under the famililar blimp banner, the touring tribute band Led Zeppelin 2 came out to a half-empty theater of unattentive guests; it seemed many were in attendance for the headliners, The Australian Pink Floyd Show. No matter; Zep 2 seemed unfazed by the light crowd, opening with with a rocking “Good Times, Bad Times.” Trying to capture the mystical energy Zeppelin once brought, Zeppelin 2 paid tribute to every move done by the original band. They looked as if they hijacked the wardrobes of Led Zeppelin and studied videos of live performances. “Heartbreaker,” “The Immigrant Song,” and “Dazed And Confused” proved the band’s worth as Zep 2 soulfully belted out the right notes, expertly strummed the right chords, and kept the odd timings close to the original ones played. This was a band that took its tribute seriously, and their respect and dedication clearly showed even if some songs wouldn’t be the pick of the litter for a radio playlist. At times, the constant Robert Plant impersonations by lead singer Bruce Lamont were a bit much; the playful antics and softly spoken words between
songs that Plant originally spoke approached overkill. Lead guitarist Paul Camp was all smiles, which took away from the mystique and dark aura that Jimmy Page exuded – but as the band began its next-to-last song of the evening, “Stairway To Heaven,” the rendition forced the crowd to stand up and appreciate the work it took to recreate this larger-than-life music.
After receiving their biggest applause of the evening, 2 ended the set with “Whole Lotta Love,” performed just the way you’d imagine the original Led Zeppelin would – wails, smoke, and screams, prompting a standing ovation. Yes, it’s been 35 years since the actual Led Zeppelin has headlined, but it’s good to know their epic songs are a long way from being forgotten. – Christopher Jon Smaragdas
Non Stop To Cairo
A DOUBLE DOSE OF COOL – FREE!
Oogee Wawa, Non Stop To Cairo Headline The Paramount
A pair of area bands that excelled in recent Long Island Music Festivals – Oogee Wawa as finalists, and Non Stop To Cairo as winners – are taking the rock world by storm. Both acts will perform at The Paramount in Huntington, on Saturday, September 26 at 8 pm; The Offshore Regulars are also on the bill. Here’s the best part: Admision is free; no tickets are required. There will be free prizes for girls in bikinis and guys in Hawaiian shirts, and specials will be offered; log on to paramountny.com to get the full scoop. Oogee Wawa is a band with many different
influences, fusing reggae, pop, punk rock, & hip hop. As one display at the LIMF, this area act brings a high energy stage show with catchy hooks and breathtaking harmonies. These “touraholics” have been all over the road, performing more than 200 shows per year since 2013, and have open for national acts The Dirty Heads, Sublime With Rome, Matisyahu, Pepper, The Wailers, 311 Slightly Stoopid, SOJA, Rusted Root, and more. Oogee has been building up a solid fan base and a strong family of like-minded bands that all work together. On a mission to to spread positive, feel-good music, Oogee Wawa is about as unique as it gets, and Jesse Lee, Nick, J.P., and Chad clearly seem to be on a collision course with national stardom. Which leads us to Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights: Non Stop To Cairo recently released a music video for “Set The Tone,” a single from their latest EP that was recorded at the studio. “Non Stop” is an apt term for this ska/funk/alternative hybrid; Nick Diamond
(guitar, vocals), August Harris (vocals), Matt Ezzo (bass), Haja Rama (trumpet), Alex Turner (drums), and Andrew Joseph (tenor saxophone) bring on the energy and soul as one of this region’s truly original units.

Jazz & Blues

Double Dynamite At B.B King's: With the recent passing of so many blues legends, it's comforting to know younger artists are keeping the blues going strong, all the while making it seem more contemporary and accessible than ever. B.B. King's Blues Club sounds like the type of venue that would present nothing but blues, but full-scale shows on the big stage are rare. So it was a serious blues fan's dream when a pair of its hardest touring artists – Albert Cummings and John Németh – both performed at the New York City venue on September 13. Németh, who continually gets compared to harmonica stylists such as Kim Wilson and James Cotton, in reality is a triple threat with a warm, soulful voice, exceptional songwriting, and, of course, a rare talent on the reeds. The Idaho native performed an hour-long set featuring songs both old (“Blue Broadway”) and new (“If It Ain't Broke” and the steamy “Bad Luck Is My Name,” from his newest album, Memphis Grease), backed by a stellar trio of young players who harmonized vocally like no blues band we’ve ever heard. We've noted it before: Artists such as Németh are the future of the genre; he somehow manages to be traditional and contemporary all at the same time, with the results being a total delight. Cummings, both a master builder and a master guitarist, really rocked this Sunday night house. Blasting out of the gate backed only with bass and drums, his nonpareil sense of melody and groove is a rarity in a field full of licks-happy
Joe Satriani fret-slingers. Performing his radio classics as well as new songs from his recently released album Someone Like You (Blind Pig), the amiable Massachusetts blues star showed why legends such as Jimmy Vivino and Mike Finnigan were eager to join him on the disc: Albert Cummings is the real deal, and this show proved it once again. – Bob Smith

Super Satriani: Jazz/rock guitarist Joe Satriani recently released his 15th solo studio album, Shockwave Supernova. Recorded late last year at Skywalker Sound in Lucas Valley, California, Satriani assembled the trio of musicians who had recently been part of his global tour: keyboardist and guitarist Mike Keneally, a veteran of several “Satch” outings and recordings, drummer Marco Minnemann, and bassist Bryan Beller. "I couldn't have asked for a better band to help bring these songs to life," said Satriani. The album also sees Satriani once again joining forces co-producer and engineer John Cuniberti. Satch and Cuniberti share production on Shockwave Supernova, as they have on numerous albums – their shared history dates back to the guitar star's 1986 debut album, Not Of This Earth, and its follow-up, the platinum-selling Surfing With The Alien. Minnemann and Beller handle the bulk of Shockwave Supernova's rhythmic duties, with the exception of four cuts – the driving "Keep On Movin'," full of “Satch” guitar wizardry and Keneally's playful piano, "In My Pocket," a greasy, souped-up take on swing, along with "Crazy Joey" and "Scarborough Stomp" – find Satriani joined by another powerhouse rhythm section: the esteemed drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (who has worked with Frank Zappa, Sting, and Paul Simon, among others) and Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Chaney. series will be coming shortly. Serious Satriani fans have the opportunity to order the new album along with an exclusive signed poster only at the artist’s official website, satriani.com. The new album is available everywhere music is sold including Amazon.com and at iTunes, and is available to order as a two-LP 120 gram vinyl release, a must for serious collectors.

Good Riddance, 2015: Since we are now into the 2015/2016 entertainment season (see Lloyd Carroll's look at the new TV shows in this issue), let's take a jaundiced look back at the media projects that made us want to throw bricks at our 4K and toss our smart devices into the trash during the justended campaign: EvineLive: What, you don't need an El Cheapo watch (sold with an array of nebulous claims), a plastic paint sprayer, or an off-brand tablet? According to recent financial reports on this home shopping network, neither does anyone else. Wristwatch shill Tim Temple reminds us of Howard Cosell's description of Tony Randall's Felix Unger: “An inane drone.” In a related story ... WatchInTyme.com: Seemingly thousands of members, but this watch fan website seems to be comprised of about nine poor souls who hoard cheesy home shopping network watches by the hundreds – literally. Yet, this site is an unintentional laugh riot akin to People Of Walmart and Funny Ashley Madison: Or Die and Hi, Neighbor should be checked out by anyone who delights in the warped sensibilities of lower middle class culture gone hilariously awry.
Neighbors With Benefits
Don’t Tell My Wife: One of the web’s greatest offenders, AshleyMadison.com, finally got its comeuppance – in the worst possible way, one that mortified (if not harmed) millions of users. We’re not joining the chorus of “shocked” web pundits on this one – it’s a free society – but this site has long been complained about by some of its users for its allegedly cavalier attitude toward billing, refunds, and general customer service. Bye,
Ashley; hello again, flirting at the bar. Let it be known we are not defending the hackers – this is yet another example of how “privacy” on the ‘Net is only an illusion, and that’s a shame. @$@!! Bad TV: “The Slap” was about a guy who slaps another couple's kid. Seriously. The sitcom “Schitt's Creek” marked the first unfunny thing that Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara have ever done together; it all seemed like an excuse to get Levy's son, Canadian Daniel Levy, on American TV. “Ballers” and “Togetherness” proved not everything on HBO is stellar. NBC's “One Big Happy” featured an astoundingly attractive cast that people still hated. CBS' “Battle Creek” would be better off if it concentrated on the city’s cereal. A&E's “Neighbors With Benefits” somehow made the lives of swingers about as sexy as bingo night. It never ends: “The Jerry Springer Show” continues to degrade and insult both viewers and participants.

Veteran New York rocker Bill Popp will “plunge” himself into the world of being a full-time musician. Commemorating the moment are the release of a new single, “Flushing This Plumbing Job Down The Drain,” during a party and live performance on Thursday, October 1 beginning at 6:30 pm at The Parkside Lounge in New York City. More info: billpopp.com. It's the stuff of local music legend: Popp survived financially through the years as a plumber. He even used his trade to earn brownie points at many New York night spots – including the “legendary” bathrooms at CBGB – until the closing of the club. “The first job I did for Hilly (Kristal, the owner) was in 1981, replacing the toilet that was smashed off the wall in the men’s room. As I opened the door, a rat jumped out of the garbage can and ran across my feet! The last thing I did for Hilly was remove the bathroom fixtures, including the famous urinals. One of them was put on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex.” Now 62, Popp is celebrating his music at this event; guests will receive a free copy of Bill Popp & The Tapes' new CD, Popp’s Last Flush, and are invited to “eat, drink and be merry,” complements of Popp. The Tapes perform at 8 pm, followed by Sea Monster and The Bowery Boys.

Gardner has released three solo albums, Hope (2011) being the most recent, as well as a stunning duo album with Anthony daCosta. With the nationally touring Red Molly, she has recorded five albums and one EP. Wictor is known to Café audiences for his solo appearances going back to the venue's first season, as well as for his work with Greg Greenway and Joe Jencks in the area vocal/instrumental trio Brother Sun. He has also been a part of annual Bob Dylan birthday celebration events.

oan Armatrading – featuring Marti Jones & Don Dixon – will headline The Space at Westbury on Saturday, September 26 at 8 pm. Tickets and information are at thespaceatwestbury.com. This performance is part of what Armatrading announced earlier this year was her “last major tour,” making this one of the area’s most talked-about concerts. This unique singer/songwriter has come a long way since her birth in the West Indies and her upbringing in Birmingham. With 20 albums to her credit, Armatrading’s subtle music has touched millions of people all over the world. Known as a true craftsman, her distinctive vocals and consummate musicianship – she has arranged as well as played every instrument, with the exception of drums on her current album – have led to unanimous, widespread and, perhaps most importantly, consistent critical acclaim. Effortlessly eclectic, her sound has ranged from
JOAN ARMATRADING
A Night Of History & Memories At The Space
true soul to sophisticated pop, all driven by her passionate guitar. In musical terms, Armatrading has achieved far more than most performers even dream of – she has played, and still does, with the cream of instrumentalists and musicians. She has received countless gold, platinum, and silver discs, and
has been nominated for the Brit Award; she also has been the recipient of a Ivor Novello Award, and figured large in VH1’s Top 100 voted poll “The Most Influential Woman In Rock.” Even more notable than those accolates is the fact that Armatrading has been honoured by the Queen of England, and is one of the few female artists ever to receive an MBE. In addition, she has performed for Nelson Mandela; been given the key to Sydney, Australia; is patron of various charities; and has presented and continues to present BBC Radio 4 and Radio 2 series. In 2009, Armatrading stood down as president, after five years, of the world-renowned Women Of The Year Lunch. This organization sees women from all walks of life honored for their unique and often heroic contribution to modern day life, whether it be in art, science, politics, business, or the humanitarian arena. This was a role
Armatrading took seriously, and she is justly proud of her achievements in the organization during this period. Also performing on this event will be Marti Jones and Don Dixon, who been working as a unit, off and on, for more than 20 years. This longtime partnership has resulted in an intimate stage rapport as well as the blending of two of the most distinct voices in the musi scene. With more than 200 songs in their collective recorded catalogue, you never know quite what to expect when they hit the stage, but rest assured their performance will feature thoughtful lyrics and heartfelt singing. Jones is originally from Uniontown, Ohio, and was initially a member of the band Color Me Gone, who recorded one EP for A&M Records in 1983. Her first solo album, 1985’s Unsophisticated Time (on A&M Records), was produced by Dixon. Jones and Dixon subsequently married, and Dixon continued to produce all of his wife’s subsequent albums. Two more albums for A&M followed in the 1980s, each of them featuring a wide range of supporting musicians (including Marshall Crenshaw, Mitch Easter, The Uptown Horns, Paul Carrack, T-Bone Burnett, Darlene Love, and many others). Jones’ sound encompasses jangle pop, ballads, and even southern-style soul material.

COMEDY Canada’s Cool Cut-Up: Straight from NBC's hit show “Last Comic Standing” and the critically acclaimed film Chef, Canada's top stand-up export, Russell Peters, returns with new material for his “Almost Famous World Tour” on Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4 at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Tickets are $69.50 and $39.50, available at ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000 or at the Westbury box office. For information, visit thetheatreatwestbury.com. The two nights of mirth will feature Peters’ latest take on some of his favorite communities, jobs he can understand, cell phones, dating, and his uncle who's never been punched in the mouth, plus his signature lightning-fast improv with the audience. The shows will also feature Peters’ official tour DJ – New York City's DJ Spinbad – as well as video cameras and screens for up-close and intimate performances. It’s been well-documented in every form of media: This recordbreaking Canadian comedian sells out arenas across the globe, and is currently ranked as one of the top 10 highest-grossing standups in the world. Starting in 2008, Peters was one of the first comedians to self-finance, self-produce, and distribute his own comedy specials and DVDs, including Red, White And Brown and 2011’s The Green Card Tour Live From The O2 Arena. The DVDs sold more than 350,000 units across North America. His last TV special, Notorious, was the first original comedy special for Netflix. It was supported by a four-part documentary series,
“Russell Peters Versus The World.” It’s not all fun, games, and stardom for this veteran funnyman: Peters has donated more than $1 million during the past several years to various charities, including The Brampton Civic Hospital, Heart House Hospice, Gilda’s Club, The MS Society, and a scholarship at his old high school known as The Russell Peters North Peel Scholarship, which sends a deserving student to college. The scholarship is now in its fifth year.
Russell Peters
Hard work pays off: Peters has spent 25 years building his career to become one of the biggest comics in the world. Thanks to YouTube and a global following, Peters has sold out arenas from Madison Square Garden to The Sydney Opera House. He’s also performed for the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. The City Boy Allstars Jazz/Rock Legends’ Groovin’ New Disc
Who: It’s hard to fathom a band with bigger credentials and a more notable history: The assembled members of The City Boy Allstars – featuring Tom “Bones” Malone (trombone and saxophone), Tony Kadleck (trumpets), Mike Merola (guitar), Rob Clores (keyboards), Al MacDowell (bass), Nick Saya (drums), Dan Sandownick (percussion), vocalists Bil Kurz, Angel Rissoff, and Horace Scott II, and “Blue” Lou Marini (saxphone) – have each been a part of so many notable national acts that we don’t have the space to list them all here. Their new album, Personal Thing, has been on dozens of area playlists since its spring release. It’s R&B to the core, yet this is a wholly original big band with a fresh sound. The Artists & Their Sound: From their official bio: “Sounding like no other band, The City Boys Allstars — three exemplary singers and 10 world-class musicians — showcase their crack-of-dawn fresh mixture of jazz and rock with touches of funk, soul, blues, and gospel on Personal Thing, their new studio album and last with key member Lew Soloff. The sheer force of the little big band’s musical personality reinforces the appeal of strong, intelligent songs written by four band members and one updated cover song: Joe
Zawinul’s ‘Birdland.’ “Consider the tremendous assets of this uncommon band. Leader Mike Merola, recently inducted into The New York Blues Hall of Fame, is a superior guitarist. Three lead singers of distinction form a soulful singing section. The instrumentalists, whether soloing or playing together, number among the top sessionmen in New York City; their affiliations range from Blood, Sweat & Tears and The Blues Brothers to The Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin to The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Ornette Coleman – not to mention Bob Dylan, The Black Crowes, John Medeski, and hundreds more. Sadly, since the recording of the new album, City Boys Allstar trumpeter Lew Soloff ... Personal Thing is lovingly dedicated to his memory.” To Learn More About The Band: Personal Thing is available at Amazon, CDBaby, and iTunes. To learn more, log on to cityboyallstars.com. The new album is available on audiophile vinyl; log on for complete information.

RHYTHM TRACKING Pop Culture Update: MTV has been the bastion of youth culture since it debuted in the early 1980s, and it changed the course of pop culture worldwide. The music biz was in a downward spiral, with middle-ofthe-road pop edging rock off the radio airwaves, and sales slumped as a result. Perhaps housewives were loving Christopher Cross and Rupert Holmes, but they weren't making them multi-platinum artists any longer. Top 40 AM station 77-WABC was ruling out airplay of guitar hits such as "Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield and "I Love Rock & Roll" by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts in favor of love song sludge – and the once-legendary station fell into the ratings basement, soon to be reformated into an all-talk “hot air” station, which it remains to this day. It was all about to change. The bright idea of producing short films of record releases as TV programming brought the kids back. Z100 replaced 77-WABC as a real Top 40 station playing all the hits, including the aforementioned Springfield and Jett. MTV became an addictive habit for the universe, as it started in America and quickly spread worldwide – creating boatloads of stars, trends, and fashion, as well as, eventually, reality TV, starting with “The Real World.” All good things must come to an end: When the Internet gave us YouTube and similar sites (and later apps), the kids left MTV, and the result was "Jersey Shore," "Teen Wolf," more mindless reality shows, and failing ratings. The last tentpole, The MTV Video Music Awards, still

holds down the fort, but just barely. In recent days, several of the key behind-the-scenes bigwigs have left the network, creating a shaky future for MTV, it would appear. This year's MTV Video Awards suffered a ratings drop, even though it was populated with the usual suspects. Taylor Swift won everything in sight, as usual. if it was hard news, and did so over and over, in the same manner that they milked his on-air moment with Swift years before on this very same show. As for the rest of the show, pop stars and hip hop heroes performed their hits and everyone went home, as if their yearly obligation had been fulfilled. MTV needs to realize that it must bring back music as its main attraction, and viewers will return. If not, it is doomed in a few year's time. The VMA ratings were down because MTV is no longer a music destination; presenting a once-a-year awards show for music is like having the fashion network give out sports awards, or vice versa. It makes no sense, there's no string of continuity, and it will decline more each year. People are people (thank you, Depeche Mode), and people still love the mass experience, enjoying things at the same time everyone else is, not in a cubicle, remote and alone. MTV has to re-embrace the mass experience, as it was and still can be, if it hopes to survive in the years to come.

It’s Finally ‘The End’
It's the beginning of the end: It started nearly five decades ago with a crack of thunder, a distant bell ringing, and then that monstrous riff that shook the earth – the heaviest rock sound ever heard. In that moment, heavy metal was born, created by a young band from Birmingham, England barely out of their teens. Now it ends, the final tour by Black Sabbath, as Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, and Geezer Butler close the final chapter in the final volume of the band's story: a major goodbye tour. Black Sabbath's farewell tour, dubbed “The End,” begins on January Black 20. It will stop on Sabbath February 25 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with further dates to be announced. Her ‘Body On Me’ Is Making Things Hot
The first new album in decades from vocalist Darlene Love – called, amazingly, Introducing Darlene Love – is now in stores. Produced and arranged by E Street Band member Stevie Van Zandt, the album is comprised of new recordings and features never-beforeheard and classic songs from a notable cast of songwriters eager to showcase one of the most seminal voices in music history. What a lineup: Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen contribute two tracks each to the 14-song album, with Stevie Van Zandt penning three songs. Other writers include Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, the longtime songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Michael Des Barres, and more. Love’s five-decade career included a stint with The Blossoms, followed by backup vocals and solo success.
Rita Ora:
Pop/R&B star Rita Ora's new single “Body On Me” (featuring Chris Brown) has rocketed to the top of the charts following its August release via Roc Nation/Columbia. The sultry track melds the two voices to underscore the theme of instinctual desire. The every-bit as sexy video for “Body On Me” was shot in Los Angeles this summer, directed by Colin
