Emily Kinney:

‘Heat’ From A ‘War’

Emily Kinney's new album, This Is War, recently debuted at #6 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and placed first on CIMS’ (The Coalition of Independent Music Stores) debut chart. If Kinney looks familiar, she should: She's an actress and songwriter best known for her role as Beth Greene on AMC's smash hit zombie gorefest "The Walking Dead." She's also an indie rocker of the highest order, performing to sold out shows on both coasts and fronting a tight, cracking band. She recently appeared at Looney Tunes in West Babylon. Known as “The Queen of Bluegrass,” Rhonda Vincent has

branched out in a big way in 2015 with a European summer tour, IBMA and Dove nominations, and a Christmas album on the way. "I was so surprised to find out the Czech Republic is the 'Bluegrass Capitol' of Europe. The response to our shows was overwhelming," said Vincent, who fronts her band, The Rage. "I guess you could say we're bluegrass jetsetters, as we've traveled to nine different countries in only the last 30 days, and I'm loving every minute as we share our music with the world." The excursion kicked off in Jablonec, Czech Republic on July 9 with what was supposed to be one show, but turned into a two-show affair after the first quickly sold out seven months in advance. The area has a history of being major supporters of the genre, often being referred to as the "Bluegrass Capitol" of Europe; the tour went on to sold out shows in Norway, Germany, and Switzerland. New Deals, New Era

Country newcomer had a major week in mid-October: She debuted her self-titled EP at iTunes and Spotify, starting a tour with Miranda Lambert, and topped it all off by signing a new publishing agreement with Warner/Chappell. “As a singer/songwriter, the music you record is so important for your journey,” said Cole. “To be able to collaborate with someone as innovative as the Warner/Chappell family is a dream come true. I can’t wait to see what we can create together.” Fans can hear more material from her new EP as she performs on the “Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Tour” with Lambert, where Cole has earned rave reviews. Huntress:

Its Biggest Album Yet?

The red-hot metal band Huntress has released its third studio album, Static, via Napalm Records. The new effort was produced by Paul Fig (Grammy nominated engineer for Alice In Chains, Deftones, Trivium, Ghost BC) and Jim Rota (Fireball Ministry). Huntress features metal's new “It Girl” in Jill Janus, who fronts guitarists Blake Meahl and Eli Santana, bassist Spencer Jacob Grau, and drummer Tyler Meahl. The band, already a huge concert draw, thrives on thundering drums, heavy riffs, spectral solos, and catchy choruses that come from the band's musical concoction of “melodic songwriting, occult science, and bong rips,” according to their bio. Find them at HuntressKills.com and all over social media; already, Janus’ quite heavenly visage has made her web pages particulary popular.

Mets fans had a feeling deep down that it was more the case that the Washington Nationals lost the NL East more than the Mets had won it. It’s kind of like the end of a beauty pageant where the emcee announces: “If the winner can’t fulfill her duties, the runner-up will assume her crown.” The Mets’ three games-to-two series victory over the Dodgers meant less moaning about Chase Utley’s aggressive slide that took broke the leg of the Mets' Ruben Tejada. Utley’s slide was late and reckless, but he certainly wasn’t trying to injure the shortstop. The Dodgers, who had lost Game 1, were trailing the Mets in the seventh inning by a score of 2-1; Utley knew that time was running out on his team. When he saw Howie Kendrick hit a slow ground ball up the middle, Utley’s only thought was to prevent a double play so that the tying run would score from third. What really put salt in the wound for Mets fans was the strange decision by the umpires to award Utley second base and not even give the Mets an out on the play. The Dodgers went onto score four runs in the eighth inning and beat the Mets, 5-2. Josh Harris, who made his fortune on Wall Street, has been the Devils owner for the last three years, and apparently had it up to here with the team’s dwindling attendance and the limited media coverage that his team receives. This past summer, Harris stripped Lamoriello of his power, and Lou, sensing that the handwriting was on the wall, departed for an executive position with the perennially disappointing Toronto Maple Leafs. Harris also fired Levine the day before the NHL season began, which was both dramatic and a bit cruel, although I have to admit that I did not shed any tears. The Devils even had open practices that were free for fans to watch. “Captain” Lou would never have tolerated that. Congratulations, Josh, on trying to

I have been slacking a bit and haven’t been on top of my EDM game – but have attended some shows that I’ve loved, and have been hot on the search for new and interesting music. After heading out to

TechnoBeat

With Richard Joseph Branciforte Electric Zoo and listening to everything those artists had to offer, I was definitely inspired. The first thing I’ll share with you is The Hyperglow Tour, making its way around the northeast the next few weeks. Picture a giant glow in the dark party, and that’s Hyperglow – and they do a pretty great job of it. At the recent show at Pacha in New York City, it was easy see the effort put into the general effects section of the tour. Pacha had a different vibe to it; you could immediately tell you were at an EDM glow experience. And when you have an intriguing atmosphere as well as top-notch artists, the experience becomes even more immersive. Unfortunately, Lookas was unable to make it that night for his set, but was replaced with a comparable act. Although I’d never heard of them before, I was thoroughly impressed with the performances by Riggi and Piros B2B with Zaxx. When

A View From The HyperGlow Stage

I first got to Pacha, before I was really paying attention, I had thought Lookas was playing because the set was hard and well put together. Transitions were seamless and the entire crowd was having a good time. It was very much the typical trap and dubstep feel of Lookas, with some house thrown in here and there. It was a good mixture and a solid opener for Dotcom. When Dotcom came on, the crowd went all out, from the foam glowsticks to two of the guests banging drums they brought in. He played back to back bangers, one right after the other, for the entirety of

his set. There was even a small wall of death made for the drop of “Prison Riot.” One of the best things about DJs at this level is their ability to energize the crowd and keep the musical momentum going throughout the night, switching up the style from time to time as well as playing songs like “Rock The Party” and any one of his phenomenal remixes. This was only one stop on the Hyperglow Tour. They’ll be touring nearby soon, so make sure you check em out while you still can. On the other side of things, I Happy Fans At Hyperglow

wanna give you guys an insight into what I’ve been downloading recently. Although I’ve heard Justin Bieber is doing pretty well on the charts, I, uhh, try to steer clear of that type of stuff. I keep it doper and download the stuff that will make the crowds wanna party with you. A lot of times, these are songs that people know, but have been remixed to give them a trap beat in the background of some sorts. Two of these are “Run This Town (Onderkoffer Remix)” and “Burnin’ Up (Aero Chord Remix).” Both have the original vocals, but with a twist that revitalizes them and gives them a new flavor. If remixes aren’t your thing, I’ve got some real brain rattlers for you: Take the “Rock The Party (Jauz x B-Sides VIP Remix), which has blown up over the past few weeks. And this VIP makes it even grimier, and makes us all fall in love with Jauz even more. If that isn’t hard enough, check out “On The Block” from Eptic and Habstrakt or “The End (Carnage & Breaux Trap Remix.)” Also, Snails, is on the rise, and after seeing him at Electric Zoo, it’s obvious that he’s gonna be big real soon. But as for right now, I’m out. Hit me up with any comments or questions at richiegtechno@gmail.com.

If you can think of a hit from the 1990s, this band can probably perform it – and the two Alexes, Nat, and Raeya have enough energy to light up all of Wantagh for an entire weekend. STUDIO NEWS Quicksand Paradise

Let us thank those lovable New York Mets for making this year's transition from a very hot summer to a quickly emerging winter a whole lot easier to tolerate – and besides, our good friend Veronica looks every bit as good in a Daniel Murphy jersey as she does in an H&M bikini. Speaking of hot stuff, here's a look at the sizzing musicians and top flight engineers from our area's recording establishements: Beneath The Sun Studios, the lavish new facility in Hicksville featuring the famed producer and engineer Micky James, keeps right on rockin' with a host of acts working

and rehearsing there of late. Even a cursory look at their Facebook page – which you should by all means do – shows there's been everything from hot and heavy blues jams to progressive rock to everything in between filling the halls with music. Working at Beneath The Sun of late have been the uniquely named hard rockers Quicksand Paradise (their official demo release party will be November 7 at The Sweatshop in Brooklyn); the multi-faceted Jetstream NY; and the fast-rising Proletarians. video, Live Country!, that dominated the sales charts much of the past two years. Adkins’ trademark baritone voice has powered countless hits to the top of the charts and sold more than 10 million albums. His hit list includes “You’re Gonna Miss This,” “Ladies Love Country Boys,” “Songs About Me,” “Every Light In The House,” “Hillbilly Bone (Blake Shelton & Trace Adkins),” and “Just Fishin’,” to name a few. The Grammy-nominated member of the legendary Grand Ole Opry is a TV

personality, actor, author, and a spokesman for The Wounded Warrior Program and also The American Red Cross , for whom he raised more than $1.5 million as the winner of NBC’s “All-Star Celebrity Apprentice.” In recent years, Adkins has performed on seven USO Tours. In his 2007 autobiography, A Personal Stand: Observations And Opinions From A Freethinking Roughneck, the former oil-rigger recounted his rise to fame, brushes with death, and battles with his

personal demons. As an actor, Adkins has played a tough-as-nails biker in The Lincoln Lawyer (starring Matthew McConaughey), and a wise oracle of a tattoo artist in the family friendly film Moms’ Night Out (starring Patricia Heaton, Sean Astin, Sarah Drew). Holly's Story: Where does one begin, dealing with such an inspiration as Holly Woodlawn, who now needs our help? Holly, one of the Andy Warhol stars of the early 1970s, was such a milestone figure for me via the film Trash, which I saw in a Long Island movie theater (as I recall,

by Madonna to be made into a film. Madonna's hit single at that time, "Deeper And Deeper," included a Trash tribute segment in the MTV video for the song. Holly appeared in that video, and all seemed good to go – until it wasn't. Word spread that there had been a falling out (Madonna was rumored to have wanted to play Candy Darling, another Warhol star, in the film), and the film never made it to the finish line. Sadly, in recent days, Holly has fallen into a dangerously serious medical situation, and due to her financial issues, is not in a good place to handle all that comes with

I was the only person there). Watching the liberated, over-the-top spontaneous combustion that was Holly's performance made me feel comfortable, for the first time, with my own inner Holly. It changed me and liberated me, and for that I am eternally in her debt. I'm sure I'm not the only person who can make this statement. Holly's rise dovetailed with the glitter/glam rock scene, and led me to discover her one time roommate Wayne (now Jayne) County and the downtown New York City scene over which they reigned, a scene I eagerly dove into. Holly showed up in other films; she teamed up with Divine in the off-Broadway production Women Behind Bars, and even launched a cabaret nightclub act, which I saw at Madonna

Longtime Massapequa Park resident Bill Apter ranks as one of the most unique personalities in the history of pro wrestling – yet, he's never competed in the ring. The longtime editor and face of Stanley Weston's legendary newsstand magazines Pro Wrestling Illustrated, Inside Wrestling, and The Wrestler (published in Long Island for decades), Apter is now busy with the wrestling news website 1Wrestling.com, and continually flies across the country to be a focal point of wrestling conventions and TV shows. Now, Apter has emerged as an author – his enjoyable, upbeat new book Is Wrestling Fixed? I Didn't Know It Was Broken ranked as the #1 wrestling book in the sports category on Amazon.com as we went to press. Is Wrestling Fixed? is different than most wrestling bios in that it isn't a tell-all or insider tome. Much like Howie Rose's New York Mets remembrance Put It In The Book!, this is the tale of Apter's rise to fame as a fan turned editor and photographer, spiked with loads of never-before-seen photos of major stars of the grappling world from throughout the decades. The idea for this recently released book actually came quite a long time ago. “I got a call from Michael Holmes of ECW Press in 2004, and he offered me a book deal,” recalled Apter. “I told him that I had never written a book, I was a column and photography guy. He countered that I must have a lot of great memories to share. Around 2012, a contract arrived, because I kept being pushed by my wife and Greg Oliver (ECW editor and wrestling and hockey writer) to do it, so I signed it. By January of this year I had probably written only two or three chapters, and Greg told me that if it wasn't finished soon they'd pull out of the deal. So I got a list of topics together, and worked closely with Greg, who served as the editor, and this is the result.” The title of the book is unique in that it's actually an anecdote from a moment in Apter's past as someone who traveled the world photographing and detailing historic pro wrestling matches featuring the legends of the ring. “Back in the 1970s, I was in Marietta, Georgia shooting a bloody, wild match between Abdullah The Butcher and Mr. Wrestling II,” said Apter. “After that match, a little kid came up to me, and with his southern accent, he asked me: 'Mister, I seen that match. Is wrestling fixed?' And I don't know why I said it, but I answered: 'I didn't know it was broken.’ The kid's father then told his son: 'Well, you can't fix somethin' that ain't broken, son.' So when we were trying to come up with a title for a book about how a nice Jewish kid from Queens becomes a wrestling writer, I remembered how I've always used this joke. It just seemed perfect.” Even after the demise of most wrestling magazines, Apter remains as popular now as he was during his years as a writer. In reality, he's never gone away. “I'm busy at 1Wrestling.com, and every few months I'm called to the WWE network to talk about classic moments in their history,” said Apter, who now resides in Pennsylvania. He's also a regular at wrestling conventions; he'll appear locally to sign his book at The Big Event IX, a massive wrestling event featuring scores of wrestling stars such as Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Taz, and Torrie Wilson on November 14 at The LaGuardia Plaza Hotel in East Elmhurst; tickets and info are at bigeventny.com.

Holly Woodlawn

Reno Sweeney, a fabulous downtown dive. A shining moment was Holly being a central character in Lou Reed's epic song "Walk On The Wild Side"; her name is the first word you hear in that international and Top 40 hit. Holly was out there on the front lines, along with County and Divine, before it was fashionable to the mainstream, before there was such a thing as LGBT groups and the Internet, before “trans” became a mainstream word. We owe a lot to the groundbreakers who paved the way and made it so much easier for those who followed, because these bold pioneers made the first real pop culture imprints and footprints, a roadmap for the next wave. Holly wrote a great book, the autobiography A Low Life In High Heels, which at one point had been optioned

this sort of crisis. A GoFundMe campaign has been created for Holly by another downtown NYC legend, Penny Arcade, and all who have been touched and influenced by Holly's work are rallying to her side. The one thing always lacking in Holly's resume was her being on a recording, but all that had changed when her scene-maker friends went into a recording studio a few years ago to record a cover version of a classic from the 1960s, "Boys," which had been a hit for The Shirelles and an album track for The Beatles. Jayne County, Punk Globe's iconic Ginger Coyote, Cherry Vanilla, Constance Cooper, and Robert Starr were joined by Holly for this wild rave-up version of "Boys"; Holly was finally on a record. The only problem was getting the song released, as numerous discussions with various indie labels never reached agreeable terms. In light of Holly's current situation, all the artists on the record consented to have a YouTube video created as a portal to lead people to Holly's GoFundMe site, so do check out “Boys” on YouTube and discover the world of the astounding Holly Woodlawn.
