Holiday Lights At Jones Beach
The 2015 Holiday Lights Spectacular has returned to Jones Beach, running now through Janauary 3. Schedule and ticket information is available at seetheholidaylights.com. The 2.5-mile light display returns for the second year after a seven year absence, and features new themed displays throughout the park as well as returning favorites including the 12 Days Of Christmas and Santa’s Beach Party. Bet you forgot all about that one. Yet, there's something perfect about the concept of Balboa taking on the assignment of training the son of his former nemesis (and

later best friend), and there was little question that this film was going to be a hit even if it wasn't worthy of carrying on the heartwarming Rocky tradition. But everything works here, particularly the casting of Michael B. Jordan – lambasted for taking a role in the disastrous Fantastic Four reboot – whose buff physique and obvous athletic prowess made him a natural for the role of the perfectly named Adonis Johnson, the son of the former heavyweight champion of the world. Naturally, it won't be easy going for either Rocky or his new protegé, as the aging Rocky's health is flagging, and Adonis has so much baggage he should be sponsored by American Tourister. Do not fear, action film fans – it all wraps up superbly in a movie that's the best acted and directed in the series since the first Rocky, with the most realistic boxing and training scenes ever filmed for the series serving as unforgettable highlights.

Join the cast of crazies as they take audience suggestions and turn them into wild and zany scenes of utter insanity as two teams of improv masters are pitted against each other for the weekly “championship.” It's clearly one of the area's best comedy values.
THE BOUNTIFUL GOURMET Spanky's In Our Gang: It's not often that we walk into a new fast food place with zero expecations and leave absolutely floored, but that's exactly what happened when we visited the new Spanky's Food Factory in Garden City Park (2458 Jericho Turnpike, (516) 280-8440). So old school that it's new age, Spanky's offers generous portions of expertly prepared comfort food, served with a smile at this new, family run business. After our pair of visits, we are Spanky’s happy to report: Spanky's is Food Factory: about as good as it gets. A Burger The smallish interior, done Beyond in modern industrial style (hence the “food factory” concept), offers just a few tables and a rather dull view of a parking lot – but oh, my, the food, all offered at surprisingly low prices. During our first visit, we tried the “The Burger” with naked fries, and nothing could have prepared us: Not one but two sirloin patties on an oversized homemade bun, and the freshness of it all was overwhelming. We'll go out on a limb: It's one of the best hamburgers we've tried in ages, easily one of the finest in Nassau County. Our second visit, on a Sunday afternoon with a group, allowed us to try Spanky's specialty: Wings, offered in buffalo, buffalo garlic, sweet chili-covered honey BBQ, and other varieties, and again, Spanky's emerged with a winner, as the oversized yet light and flavorful wings were stellar. Case in point: As we waited for our order, others were ordering take-out wings for football watching; that tells you everything you need to know. Other offerings include sandwiches, sales, and great snacks such as garlic pretzels, buffalo mac and cheese, homemade potato chips (!) and fried ravioli (!!). Everything is served with a smile; upon leaving, the cook actually asked if we enjoyed our food and wished us a good day. That's the secret, folks: Care about your customers and offer great food. The only thing we don't like about Spanky's Food Factory is its smallish parking lot – after the New Hyde Park/Mineola area finds out how good Spanky's is, getting a spot for the jalopy is going to be pretty tough. Ben's Does Good: Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers hosted the 12th annual Interfaith Nutrition Network’s (INN) Charitable Fundraiser, “The Olde Time New York Deli Experience,” at Ben’s of Greenvale on October 5. This year’s event raised more than $13,000 in support of the organization’s mission of “neighbors helping neighbors.” Ben’s Deli owner and founder Ronnie Dragoon served as the event’s “official pastrami slicer.” A long-time supporter and board member for The INN,Dragoon donated 100 percent of all proceeds from the event to support Long Islanders in need on behalf of Ben’s Kosher Deli. “We are extremely fortunate to have supporters like Ronnie Dragoon and the entire team at Ben’s hosting The INN for this annual event,” says Jean Kelly, executive director of The INN. “Friends of The INN look forward to having a delicious meal each year and contributing towards our goal of helping hungry and homeless Long Islanders in the process.” Ben’s famous pastrami sandwiches were served alongside turkey, corned beef, latkes, sauerkraut, pickles, and kosher hot dogs. Uncle Floyd, headlines his return to the area in “Back To Bellmore” on Sunday, December 13 at 7:30 pm, while longtime “Imus In The Morning” star Rob Bartlett teams with Tony Powell for “Too Early For Christmas,” a pre-holiday comedy show, on Saturday, December 12 at 8 pm. Some people may very well have an uncle who wears a porkpie hat, bow tie, and loud plaid sportcoat, and often croons old-time songs – but has he co-starred with Robin Williams, earned a Guinness-verified world record, or been the subject of a David Bowie song? “Uncle” Floyd Vivino began his Uncle career in show busiFloyd ness as a child performer, and has gone on to legendary status for his long-running, New Jersey-based “The Uncle Floyd,” show, a deftly smart yet ultra-low budget comedy show that many comedy fans still yearn for the days of. An accomplished actor, Floyd has appeared in dozens of TV shows and major motion pictures – yet, to many, he's the king of barrellhouse piano, great old-school jokes, and the kind of

Another star with a huge cult following is Rob Bartlett, who will team with longtime collaborator Tonly Powell for their newest live holiday comedy extravaganza on December 12 in Bellmore. Best known for his longtime stint as Don Imus' comic foil on the legendary morning radio show “Imus In The Morning,” Bartlett's done so much acting and offered so many varied kinds of shows and performances that it's hard to list them all here, but the memories come flooding back: He was
one of the original hosts of “WWE Monday Night Raw”; played the classic role of Speed in the Broadway revival of The Odd Couple starring Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, and appeared in several other Broadway shows; starred in his own Broadway show, More To Love; and was the focus of his own comedy tours with his backup group, The Bartlettes. His partner for this wacky Christmas show, Tony Powell, is a more recent yet veteran addition to the “Imus In The Morning” show, and a member of the acerbic yet lovable radio star's team when it moved to 77 WABC-AM, and has a long list of comedy appearances in his own right at top comedy clubs and media. His compendium of TV credits include “Showtime At The Apollo” and a long line of well-remembered commercials, including classic ads for Visa and Ritz Crackers. The New York Jets received a lot of vitriol after losing their recent Thursday night football game to Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills, 22-17. The score was misleading because the Jets were flat the whole night, and trailed nearly the

entire game save for a brief 3-0 lead. What bothered Jets fans was not so much that their team lost to their former head coach as much as they were awful on national television, and lost a game to a division rival in a game that may have wild card implications. Many stupid things occurred in the game; thin-as-a-rail wide receiver Devin Smith, not a good kick returner, fumbled one deep in Jets territory that got returned for an easy Bills touchdown; with six seconds remaining in the second quarter, Zac Stacy, a nondescript running back and even less of a kick return threat, tried to run the ball back instead of smartly falling on it and waiting for the half to end – and he wound up getting a broken ankle for his poor judgment. A secondary area of frustration: Every season, it is basically a foregone conclusion that the New England Patriots will win the AFC East. That leaves the Jets and every other team in that division playing for wild card

Betts On Bowling: No, our first photo isn’t in the wrong place! From the PBA's Bill Vint: Mookie Betts returned to his home in Nashville the day after his season with the Boston Red Sox ended – and that evening, a supply of new Mookie bowling balls was delivered to his Betts house. A few days later he was at Donelson Strike & Spare, practicing as he began preparing for his debut in the GEICO Professional Bowlers Association World Series of Bowling VII in Reno, Nevada, taking place from December 7 through 19. The 23-year-old outfielder has been preparing himself for his next athletic challenge: competing for the first time against a field of more than 200 of the world’s best bowlers, and hoping to make a “cut” in the sport’s most complex environment. “I’ve been bowling for a long time, and the opportunity to bowl against the guys I’ve watched on TV on Sundays for all these years is going to be an amazing experience,” said Betts. Betts will get his chance to bowl with and against professional bowling’s best because he mentioned during the baseball season that he wanted to bowl in the annual PBA Chris Paul Celebrity Invitational (which he will do in January). That expression of interest led the PBA to invite him to bowl in the World Series as well. He eagerly accepted. Now, he said, it’s a matter of getting into bowling shape and learning as much as he can about PBA-
crumbs, and that factor seems dispiriting to both the players and their fans. It appears to be the end of an era for the New York Mets, as second baseman and playoffs hero Daniel Murphy rejected the team’s generous $15.8 million qualifying offer. Expect young Dilson Herrera to man second base next season. One can understand why the Mets would part ways with Yoenis Cespedes, but given the puny offense exposed by the Royals in the World Series, it’s a bit discouraging that the scuttlebutt is that the team is not a serious player for free agents Jason Heyward or Justin Upton. New York Yankees general manager Brian Rex Cashman may have Ryan fleeced the Minnesota Twins by trading backup catcher John Ryan Murphy for promising switch-hitting outfielder Aaron Hicks. If you are one of the many baseball fans who go into a funk once the World Series ends, I heartily recommend picking up a copy of Jeff Katz’s Split Season (St. Martin’s), which looks back the 1981 season which suffered from a mid-season lockout that resulted in Major League Baseball playing two separate half-seasons. Katz provides a gritty account of behind-the-scenes machinations of the labor
dispute, including the three-way fight between Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, the various team owners, and the owners’ polarizing negotiator, Ray Grebey. They were no match for the Players Association’s Marvin Miller, who made sure that his rank and file presented a united front. The author also recounts the phenomenal rookie season of Los Angeles

least. Unfortunately, pro basketball has four quarters, and the Knicks have had trouble finishing games; a good example was their recent game at MSG against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Carmelo Anthony had 26 points in the game, but 22 came in the first half as a 10-point halftime lead turned into a 6-point loss. Before that game, I ran into former Knicks player Kiki Vandeweghe, who also served as the head coach of the Nets during their horrible 2009/10 season when they won a grand total of 12 games. Kiki is currently an executive in the NBA’s front office, and he made it clear that while he feels for current Nets head coach Lionel Hollins, he wouldn’t want to switch places with him. The 2015/16 Brooklyn Nets were at least able to win a game after dropping their first seven, so that record places them ahead of
games of that season.The current Nets squad is still in jeopardy of challenging the 1972/73 Philadelphia 76ers 9-73 record of futility. Aside from the fact that most teams have stronger rosters, the Nets lose because other teams have a propensity to hit three-point shots against them with alarming regularity. On their recent road trip, the Nets blew a 15–point lead because the Kings’ Rajon Rondo and DeMarcus Cousins hit three-pointers at will. The Nets will be have an NBA Developmental League team in the refurbished Nassau Coliseum beginning in 2017. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano promises that mass transit to the Coliseum will be improved. Mangano told me that there will be buses that will shuttle customers to both the Hempstead and Mineola LIRR stations before and after events; he also believes that the Coliseum will host an American Hockey League team, and added that he did not think it would be the Islanders’ current AHL team, the Bridgeport Sound-Tigers. Long Island baby boomers remember how NBA Hall Of Fame forward Rick Barry led the Nets to glory at both the Island Garden in West Hempstead and the Nassau Coliseum in the early 1970s. Barry was hired by a company that had a booth at HX, the Hotel Experience trade show, at the Javits Center last month. I asked Barry, one of the best foul shooters in
history of pro basketball, why no one shoots them underhanded in the manner that he did. Barry guessed that players make so much money now that they don’t care about working on free throws, and ESPN rarely shows them on SportsCenter. He added that many NBA players don’t think that it’s macho to attempt free throws underhanded. Kudos to HBO’s “Real Sports With Bryant Gumble” to profile Isiah Thomas, who brought success in his first year as president of the New York Liberty. Thomas admitted that Isiah he was lousy Thomas at running the Knicks, but he denied that he ever sexually harassed Anucha Browne Sanders. MSG CEO (and Oyster Bay resident) James Dolan gave a rare interview to Gumbel as part of the Thomas segment.

Since 1986, Winston has raised money for food banks and service organizations, and will continue to do so by working with a local food bank in every tour market to hold a canned food drive at the show, and also by donating 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of his merchandise to the organization. The food bank for the show had been yet to be determined at press time. Since 1972, Winston has released 13 solo piano albums. His most recent albums are Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2 – A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit (2012) and Love Will Come –The Music of Vince Guaraldi Vol 2 (2010) and Spring Carousel – A Cancer Research Benefit (2105). On the latter album, the solo piano melodic songs were composed in 2013 while Winston was recovering from his bone marrow transplant at The City of Hope Village; he is dedicating 100 percent of his artist royalties to benefit cancer research. Winston's concert in Port Washington will be his “Winter Show,” which will include melodic fall and winter type songs, some of Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts pieces, pieces inspired by the New Orleans piano and the stride piano traditions, and new songs from his new recording. Keeping The Blues Alive: The Blues Foundation will honor 15 individuals and organizations with its 2016 Keeping The Blues Alive Awards during a recognition luncheon on Friday, January 29, 2016, in Memphis, Tennessee. Each year, The Blues Foundation presents The KBA Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to blues music. The KBA ceremony will be held in conjunction with the 32nd International Blues Challenge, which begins January 27 Todd and features the final rounds Glazer of the annual blues music competition that brings artists and bands from around the United States and Canada, as well as seminars, showcases, and receptions for blues societies, fans, and professionals. KBA Committee Chairman Art Tipaldi: "This year, the Board eliminated some KBA categories as a way for the Committee to honor individuals who have excelled in a variety of KBA categories. Thus the slate of 15 winners includes individuals who have made a difference with their lengthy commitments to the blues. At the same time, the Committee made sure to continue to recognize larger, comprehensive entities like an affiliated organization, a North American festival, an International festival, a blues club, a record label, and a blues radio." I don't know if Swift or Adele will be able to achieve similar victories, but nonetheless, they are the super powers of this moment in time, and are proving that the monolithic machines that have turned the music industry upside down can indeed be challenged without repercussions – although, ladies, the industry has a long memory, and when the day comes that your sales start to falter (and that day will come), do watch your backs. Wiz Redux: For the third consecutive year, NBC will present a live musical for the holidays, following the previous productions of The Sound Of Music (a big hit) and last year's Peter Pan (not so much). This year, it's a revisit to The Wiz, which will be a interesting event to behold, with Queen Latifah and company taking on the task of making it work. We can expect to see the cable channels milking the late-70s movie version around the same time; the film, starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne, did not go over well upon its release, but in the decades that followed several generations of kids came to love it. It stands to reason that Motown is about to release Diana Ross Sings Songs From The Wiz, an album that

Joining her in the trenches is Adele, who is also a force to be reckoned with, and who is denying her new blockbuster release, 25, from showing up on Spotify and elsewhere. It will soon officially be “last call” at The University Café, Stony Brook University's 10-year-old music venue and the home of WUSB's long-running Sunday Street series. The building the venue is housed in will soon close, and as such the Café moves into area music history. The Sunday Street series, however, will continue, as the popular music events will move to The Gillespie Room at The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook in January. During its decade in existence, The University Café clearly was one of the most unique area music venues in that it challenged its audience; in a region rife with clubs where many bookers and owners look no futher than neighborhood cover and tribute bands, the Café dared to introduce new music genres and acts to its fans. Among the noteworthy artists who appeared at the Café in recent years – some of them area musicians who went on to national acclaim – were Willie Nile, Red Molly, Tom Russell, Strawbs, David Francey, Ellis Paul, The Chris J. Connelly Kennedys, Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby, Tracey Grammer, and too many more alternative, Americana, blues, and roots artists than we can list here. The final event at University Café will be a huge triple Butchers bill featuring three of the Blind area's top indie acts in Butchers Blind, Chris Connolly, and Bryan Gallo on Saturday, December 12 at 7:30 pm. The soundtrack to the commercial is "Every Day Is A Holiday," a song written by Perry for the H&M holiday commercial, produced by Duke Dumont.
