eturning to the area after a long absence, “Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx” headlines on Thursday, February 25 at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington. A “Founder’s Room Afterparty” applies after the consusion of this performance; for details and tickets, log on to paramountny.com or ticketmaster.com. Like other legendary lead singers who a portion of the casual listening public might not remember from their actual names (think Burton Cummings’ work with The Guess Who or Lou Gramm with Foreigner), DeYoung is a founding member of Styx. The Chicago-based band originated in 1962 when 14-yearold DeYoung and brothers John and Chuck Panozzo joined DeYoung in the basement of his childhood home to form what would eventually becoming a best-selling pop/rock group. In that light, Styx has sold more than 35 million

Dennis DeYoung:

Pick Up Styx (& More) At The Paramount albums worldwide; DeYoung has written eight of their nine Top 10 singles. An historic tidbit: Styx is the only band to ever record four consecutive triple platinum albums. The unique, undefinable, legendary B-52s are in the midst of another national tour – and they’ll return to area for their third headlining show at The Space At Westbury on Friday, February 26 at 8 pm. Tickets are available now online at Ticketmaster.com or at the Space box office. For more information, visit thespaceatwestbury.com. There’s a very good reason why this trio of wacky Georgia-based rockers have become a favorite at The Space and throughout Long Island: Only The B-52s can lay claim to their quirky, one-of-a-kind sound. There's certainly no mistaking the signature call-and-response vocal play of singers Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson. With more than 20 million albums sold and a non-stop touring schedule, this revolutionary rock band shows no signs of slowing down. Two years back, the influential act celebrated its 35th anniversary; their current tour will feature new musicians in the group, but the same non-stop upbeat bent that has deservedly landed the group the designation of

It’s Their Third Party At The Space “The World’s Greatest Party Band.” It’s been an historic past few years for these Athens, Georgia natives. In February 2011, 34 years after their debut, The B-52's returned to celebrate in their hometown, where it all began for the group. The concert is available as the band's first-ever live DVD and Blu-ray, entitled With The Wild Crowd, which was released in March 2012 via Eagle Rock Entertainment (and has also been featured as part of a ratings-grabbing PBS network special event last year). With The Wild Crowd! was recorded in The

seven solo albums, including Desert Moon, whose title track achieved Top 10 status. In 2014, Frontiers Music released Dennis DeYoung & The Music Of Styx Live In Los Angeles, a CD/DVD/Blu-ray set that encompasses the greatest hits of Styx. This live concert was filmed at the El Rey Theatre, and was also released as a concert TV special on AXS-TV. “I am constantly amazed, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, that the (Styx) music has touched so many people for such a long time, it really is a testament to the songs,” said DeYoung of the CD/DVD project. “Because, strip it all away, it is the songs that matter to people. You get the song right and the people respond.” Learn more at dennisdeyoung.com.

For more than five decades, DeYoung has been a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and record producer. He wrote and sang a host of hit songs, including “Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” “Best Of Times,” “Mr. Roboto,” “Show Me The Way,” “Desert Moon,” “Don’t Let It End,” and the 1979 People’s Choice Award winner, “Babe.” DeYoung has also recorded Photos by Pieter M. B-52s' hometown at a show that commemorated the band's 34th anniversary of their first-ever live show on Valentine's Day 1977. Wig-wearing, boa-draped, glitter-covered fans came from near and far to celebrate this historic event as the band delivered a sizzling set that turned Athens' Classic Center into a cosmic dance hall. Filmed in high-definition with DTS Surround Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, this 90-minute set is packed with fan favorites such as "Love Shack," "Rock Lobster," "Roam," "Funplex," "Give Me Back My Man," "Private Idaho," and "Planet Claire" (most of which will no doubt be performed at the upcoming concert at The Space as well). The B-52s were formed on an October night in 1976 following drinks at an Athens Chinese restaurant. Naming themselves after Southern slang for exaggerated bouffant hairdos, the band soon attracted an ardent following, becoming the talk of Athens. Before long, they began making trips to New York City for gigs at CBGB, with their thrift store aesthetic and genre-defying songs electrifying

the post-punk underground. A record deal soon followed, and their self-titled debut sold more than 500,000 copies on the strength of its first singles, the garage rock party classic "Rock Lobster," and "52 Girls." Years later, the band scored its biggest hit with “Love Shack,” and remains a touring smash to this day. Other hits have included such smashes as “Good Stuff,” “Planet Claire,” “Give Me Back My Man,” and their most recent single, “Funplex.” Thirty-seven years and more than 20 million album sales later, The B-52s remain one of rock music's most one-of-a-kind – as well as enduring – original bands. Looking back at the group's pioneering fusions of punk, new wave, and vintage rock, it would be tough to imagine the contemporary musical landscape without the off-kilter and unique Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson, as well as past members Keith Strickland (still a non-touring part of the group) and Ricky Wilson. As brilliantentertainers as well as true ambassadors for peace, long may their party continue.

action thriller may be the best (and most faithful) adaptation of a comic book anti-hero to date. It’s not the one you want to drop off Becky and Billy at, but this is a great night out for grown-ups looking for vibrant escapism. Everything you don’t expect in a superhero film is crammed into this one – murderous violence, hot sex, terminal cancer, and more streams of flowing blood than anywhere outside of a George Romero zombie film, all offered with some of the most subversive humor this side of “The Far Side.” And it doesn’t hurt that Reynold is perfectly cast, Carino is a star in the making, and Baccarin is beyond smoking. All in all, it’s simply dazzling action filmmaking.

event that many of its fans claim is the next best thing to The Beatles. If the name of this show sounds familiar, it should – the original production of Rain ran on Broadway for 300 shows (and eight preview performances) at The Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York City; the original stint lasted from October 2010 to July 2011. Here's another trivia nugget about Rain: This show actually pre-dates Beatlemania, another show that ran on

Broadway, by several years. Mark Lewis, the act’s manager, looks back with pride on the tour's official website. “I’m proud to say that I was there when America tuned into 'The Ed Sullivan Show' and saw The Beatles presented to a nation for the first time,” said Lewis. “I remember what it was like to take the plastic wrap off of a Meet The Beatles LP, and be introduced to all of these classic songs for the first time.”

It wasn’t a super Monday two weeks ago for New York Knicks upper management as team president Phil Jackson dismissed his handpicked head coach, Derek Fisher, less than two seaons into the job. Jackson cited that the

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. should remind professional athletes that playing in New York does have tangible advantages. He was part of one of this year’s better Super Bowl ads, a Buick spot, as he was a guest at a wedding where a bridesmaid makes an Odell-like catch of the bouquet. Beckham, who has acting aspirations, also had a small role just after the Super Bowl on the CBS medical drama “Code Black.” The Super Bowl was not a well-played game, but CBS’s coverage was as good as Dave Mason's Traffic Jam Leon Russell NYCB Theatre at Westbury February 25 at 8 PM

one could have asked. The network was aware that it had a responsibility to cover not just this particular game, but properly document the half-century of America’s biggest sporting event. In a particularly poignant segment, all of the surviving playby-play Super Bowl broadcasters spoke about their experiences. CBS Sports CEO Sean McManus deserves to take a bow for giving Fox’s Joe Buck and NBC’s Al Michaels a chance to bask in the glory of this NFL milestones. A lot has been made of the suddenly embattled Peyton Manning plugging Budweiser when asked about how he would celebrate. It was subsequently reported that he has an equity stake in some regional Anheuser-Buschdistributorships. If you’re a scholarly baseball fan, pick up The Golden Era of Major League Baseball by Bryan Soderholm-Difatte (Rowman & Littlefield). The focus is on the 1950s; while there is plenty written about New York’s three teams at the time, Soderholm-Difatte dedicates a chapter to how the 1956 Cincinnati Reds may have screwed themselves out of a pennant because their manager, Birdie

STUDIO NEWS Billy Joel

It appears that 2016 is going to be a big year for music produced in Long Island. Recent sessions at Fred Guarino's Tiki Recording Studios in Glen Cover bear this nugget of truth out: “Billy Joel has been in recording segments for the new Billy Joel Channel on Sirius XM,” reported the studio. “Studio owner Fred Guarino recorded Billy talking about and performing his songs on Tiki's Yamaha grand piano. The show was produced by Sirius' program director Lou Simon. “Fred just completed a new album for Maureen McGovern (famous for her 1970s hit “The Morning After,” from the classic film The Poseidon Adventure). Maureen took breaks from her busy national touring schedule to

record with Fred in Glen Cove. The album features Jeff Harris, Jay Leonhart, Jay Berliner, ‘Blue’ Lou Marini, and Mauro Refosco. “Fred is also recording tracks with famed British Invasion artist Billy J. Kramer. Players include Donny Celenza and Liberty DeVitto. Billy has an impressive career, and talks about it in his soon to be released book, Do You Want To Know A Secret, available from equinoxpub.com. He was managed by Brian Epstein (The Beatles), signed to EMI/Capitol Records, and produced by George Martin. Many of Billy’s hits were written for him by his friends John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Metal Allegiance's new album – recorded at Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights – as been racing up many metal charts since its release by Nuclear Blast America this past summer; it's available at FYE, Best Buy, iTunes, Amazon,

and wherever music is sold or offered as downloads. Brought together by principal partner Mark Menghi, the original material came together from the creative minds of David Ellefson of Megadeth, Mike Portnoy of The Winery Dogs, and Alex Skolnick from Testament alongside Menghi. The four writers reached out through their metal Rolodexes to a diverse lineup of performers, each adding their own personal musical stamp to the collection of nine original songs. Stemming from an initial idea in 2011, Metal Allegiance was born as a way to unite a collection of hard rock and heavy metal’s most notable musicians in a setting born under one ideal: A love of music and performing. Be A Star In Bellmore: Sweeping Talent Search Is On

Compiled By Bob Smith In-Between Spending Lonely Nights In Bars Asking Women Half His Age To Pass Him A Napkin.

Area talent of all kinds, pay serious heed: There is currently a search on for participants in a major talent show that could become a regularly scheduled event at one of the area’s top showplaces. These events will headine on The Bellmore Movies’ lavish live stage, and the search is on for all kinds of talent – magicians, comedians, singers, improvisational groups, ventriloquists, acoustic acts, and more. “We’re looking to do a talent search and show – old school, somewhat like vaudeville,” said area entertainment professional Gary Smith of New York Entertainment Club; he’s well-known in for his long stint at The Brokerage, one of the area’s top venues. “We’d also like to have a keyboard player to fill time between the acts, and be used when needs for the singers, and more. The emcee will be Rick Morgan, an established comic and producer from Long Island ... I see this as a great night out. I would love to make this a monthy event.” To get involved, call (516) 785-4234, or log on to NYentertainmentcclub.com to learn more.

Gaffigan and Reiner will join previously announced cast members, including Stephen Fry, Zendaya, Jennifer Grey, Molly Shannon, Lance Lim, Greg Proops, Diedrich Bader, and Rick Overton. "We love the way this cast has come together and we are enormously excited that their work will be given additional heart and soul through the magic of Mark Isham's score." Added director Christopher Jenkins: "With the comic talent of Jim Gaffigan and Carl Reiner you stand back Stevie and let the G.B jokes come. It's a complete thrill to work with talent of this caliber. Add to that the sparkling musical talent of composer Mark Isham, and it's easy to see how we have something special coming together."

them. “Over the course of the many shows we have presented, our collective has performed hundreds of songs by a wide variety of songwriters,” said Steve Prisco, an NYRMA founder. “That's really what our shows are about – the songs. Among the great vocalists and instrumentalists that make up NYRMA, you'll also find a group of songwriters as well. Fittingly, they are as diverse as they are talented, and we think it's time that we featured some of their songs.” The roster of artists for this event includes Tom Ciorciari, Eric Grugnale, Chris J. Connolly, Andre

Fortier, Philip Hoffman, Annie Karen Hudson, Annie Mark, Mark and Steven Welner, performing with an assortment of backing musicians. An overview: Singer-songwriter Karen Hudson has opened for Madeliene Peyroux, Walter Salas Humara, and Pete Seeger. This is Americana for people who keep The Byrds and The Beatles next to Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline ... Steve Welner has received critical praise for all of his albums, and in particular for his songwriting. For his work on Stole Away, he was nominated to the Austin, Texas-based Freeform American Roots charts as one of the top five songwriters of 2008 .... Long Island native Andrew Fortier is a singer/songwriter whose personal style transforms the stage into his living room and the audience into his family, according to NYRMA. His songs such as “Restoration,” “Freeze Frame,” and “I Say Grace” tell stories of the trials and tribulations of everyday life: love, loss, family, faith, acceptance, and thankfulness ... behind the early 90s band The Rockefellers, Eric Crugnale took a hiatus to pursue family and "responsible" career goals. In 2005, he formed The Winter Wonderland with family and friends to record a series of holiday-themed releases. In 2010, he released Carol Was Here, his first solo album ... Deerheart is the nom du rock of Tom Ciorciari, a veteran of the 80s garage scene in both New York City and Boston ... Originally from Staffordshire, England, Chris J. Connelly spent his early years performing in hometown venues before eventually crossing the Atlantic to reside in his current home in Long Island. His work is inspired by both early Americna roots music and modern alt-rock ... Annie Mark has shared her countrytinged Americana-roots music with audiences from Ireland to Nashville. A New York native, she moved to the South at age 10, where she nurtured a life-long love of old-style country music and of songs that convey slice-of-life stories ... Philip Hoffman is the lead singer and songwriter for Azro Cady, and has played Joe’s Pub, The Mercury Lounge, and Rockwood Music Hall in New York City and at Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett.

Who: Nikki Torres & The Rhythm Machine, based in Suffolk County and Florida, are delivering the goods as one of the most authentic new bands that pays tribute to both Gloria Estefan and her original group, the legendary Miami Sound Machine. The Aritsts & Their Sound: From their bio: “From a small hallway behind a door marked #7 emerges congas, timbales, and bongos with rhythms that invade the soul and make your body shake like a quarter-mile dragster; Nikki Torres and Bill Ciaramelli are the culprits. The power duo of singer and drummer/musical director are tightening up their latest project, consisting of some of the most highly regarded musicians in New York. “Nikki Torres & The Rhythm Machine is paying tribute to Ms. Gloria Estefan and her longtime collaboration with her husband, Emilio. Like the renowned couple, the husband-and-wife team of Nikki and Bill were introduced through the business and music that they love. With hours of rehearsal and miles of touring to venues from Nikki Torres New York to California, it was meant to be. As they joined their passion and their lives, they combined their years of experience to develop an extraordinary musical homage. “Paying close attention to details of not only the music but the rhythms and the energy, Nikki and Bill have managed to painstakingly put together a solid show that will respectfully represent the work and dedication that came before. With an anxious group of talented musicians, they are ready to play and ready to bring a new level of excitement to any stage, any arena, and any audience that does not just want to sit but wants to stand and sing and get involved. Get on your feet!” The band is currently in the studio with Don Chaffin at DCity Studio, with a video to be released this month. Vinyl, The Reality: As we’ve been harping about for some time here, the future of recorded music is its past – the vinyl record album and single, with two sides, LP covers, and picture sleeves, items that can be collected and revered, indicating true fandom. Everyone can get a selfie-style video

with Bob Marley & The Wailers in front of a small crowd of hipsters, no one beileves me – but this very same event is portrayed in the first episode of "Vinyl." If the show finds its audience, the real history of the New York rock scene might finally reach the public at large, which at the time was more interested in Helen Reddy and John Denver. I'm sure that some details will be totally wrong and certain artists will be overlooked, but there'll be time enough for me to bitch about such things in future issues of Good Times. For the moment, let's lean back and enjoy the ride on Sunday nights on HBO.

up on YouTube or elsewhere, but can everyone get a record out there and then watch people buy a copy and proudly display it? I can attest to my own pride when hearing from people who still own my "Death To Disco" single from late 1977, and the original button to go along with it. Turntable sales and vinyl record sales are turning the music industry on its collective ear; the young are leading the charge, not nostalgic old timers longing for 1967. Who would rather ask “Did you see my new video?” instead of asking, “Did you get a copy of my new record?" Trust me: There ain't nothing like the real thing, baby. As teens step away from video games for a while and invite friends over to see their new record player, the pop culture world prepares to step back into the future. I can't wait to see and hear the results. ‘Vinyl,’ The Series: The HBO series "Vinyl" is being unleashed upon the world, a product of Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese. The show brings us to the dawn of the 1970s in New York City as the glam rock scene is born at The Mercer Arts Center, with The New York Dolls on HBO’s “Vinyl”

stage in full tilt performing "Personality Crisis." Worked around a record executive played by "Ant Man" star Bobby Cannavale, who finds himself in the midst of several new music genres being born, the program takes us on a tour of the NYC that I remember. When I tell people that the legendary "in" club, Max's Kansas City, was the place where Bruce Springsteen shared the stage

Super Bowl: Aside from the game and the commercials, the Super Bowl halftime show is always a conversation piece; this year's was no different. Originally, the night was going to be a vehicle to promote the new album by Coldplay, one of the few bands to actually be in a position to get booked onto the show in an era of solo female stars dominating the charts and radio playlists. It thereby came as no surprise when Beyoncé was added to the bill – a bit of insurance to keep folks from drifting – and they even added a sweetener in Bruno Mars, who had delivered one of the most successful halftime shows ever. The result was viewed by most as a pandering mish mosh featuring everything but the kitchen sink. In spite of that, Beyoncé's appearance was taken as some sort of political statement (which I didn't get from it at all), while Mars came across as the third wheel on the bicycle. As for the kitchen sink, that would be Lady Gaga, delivering a brilliant version of “The National Anthem,” which was attacked the next day by some folks who said it was a plot to turn people gay by featuring Gaga on the show. I never cease to be amused by how powerful pop culture can be, but I have yet to meet a female-loving straight guy who suddenly turned gay by watching Gaga. Maybe this sort of thing happens more often in the midwest?

The Original Iggy:

Pop’s New ‘Depression’

Iggy Pop’s new album Post Pop Depression will be supported by a limited run of live performances; he'll perform on April 12 at United Palace Theater in New York City. The tour will mark the sole occasion that the album lineup of Iggy Pop, producer, guitarist, songwriter, and band leader Joshua Homme, Dean Fertita, and Matt Helders — augmented by multiinstrumentalist Troy Van Leeuwen and journeyman guitarist/bassist Matt Sweeney — will perform this material, as well as classics spanning Iggy’s solo career, in a live setting. The first single from the new effort was "Gardenia"; a second advance track, "Break Into Your Heart," has been premiered. Both tracks will be delivered instantly with pre-orders from iTunes or on vinyl.

Lizzy’s Labors:

Halestorm Hits The Hiway

Halestorm has announced details of its upcoming North American tour. The dates begin April 1; support comes from guests Dorothy and Lita Ford. In addition, the tour will include stops at a number of festivals and summer radio concerts, as well as a pair of dates alongside Rob Zombie. “This is a tour I've wanted to put together for a long time,” said

Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale. “Not just a package with every band featuring a girl – that's been done a million times. This tour is a different breed, showcasing loud, powerful female voices. Every frontwoman here holds her own both on and off the stage, and has fought more than her share of the good fight. This isn’t your sister’s woman music fest! I'm honored to have the legendary Lita Ford on this run and welcome newcomers Dorothy, who make me so proud of the future of Jeff Healey rock. All fans of true rock music — men, women, everyone — need to see this show.” More: halestormrocks.com.

Jeff Healey: A ‘Lost’ Gem

March 25 marks the release of Heal My Soul, the new “lost album” from Jeff Healey; that same date would have seen Healey turn 50 years old. Under the supervision of his estate, these tracks were restored for release; the set includes "Daze Of The Night," the acoustic ballad "Baby Blue," and Healey's take on Richard Thompson's "I Misunderstood." In a joint statement, Jeff Healey Estate co-administrators Cristie Healey and Roger Costa said: "Heal My Soul is a project that we have wanted to tackle for years. A 'lost' album, it contains material recorded during one of the most creative periods in Jeff's rock career. Until now, it has never seen the light of day. Jeff was very proud of this work Halestorm and it features

performances, restoring them to their proper stature and mixing and mastering them from the ground up. This has been a true labor of love for us from beginning to end and we're absolutely thrilled to be able to finally share this significant release with the world." Healey, from Toronto, is remembered as one of the most outstanding and innovative rock and blues guitarists of the past 30 years. He lost his sight during early childhood due to retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer. Playing guitar since the age of three, he developed the distinctive lap-style guitar technique that helped bring him international attention by his late teens. Healey died on March 2, 2008 at age 41 after a three-year battle with sarcoma cancer. His biggest FM hit was “Angel Eyes.”

It’s A ‘Fair’ Record

Betsy has released ‘Fair,’ the title track from her forthcoming debut solo EP via Warner Brothers / Columbia Records. The track is

available now on iTunes and Spotify. It’s an introduction which immediately begs the question “Where did that voice come from?” – though few would predict the answer actually lies on a goose farm in rural Wales, where Betsy was born and raised. The EP is written and co-produced by Betsy, and is a fusion of soulful, gospel melodies and modern electronics.
