The annual 5K Walk/Run For Friends Of Karen at The Long Island Marathon will be on Saturday, April 30, at The Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, with a 10K, Half & Full Marathon on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Friends Of Karen provides emotional, financial, and advocacy support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning, and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 14,000 children in the New York tri-state region. The Walk/Run for Friends of Karen was started in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Evelyn Anderson, a Friends of Karen parent who wanted to run a half marathon to honor her son, Luke, diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler and now enjoying growing up with his family.

Frankly, the only thing that could make this a “comedy” in our eyes is if there’s a love scene featuring Lovitz and Aniston, but we bet that’s not in the equation.

Nine Lives (now slated for release on August 5): Get ready: A big-time businessman (Kevin Spacey), according to the press notes, somehow is inside his family’s pet cat. So, in other words, he becomes the Mr. Ed of the feline set. In 2016. We’ll repeat this: An Oscar winner is about to star as a cat. Jilted goddess Jennifer Garner and fellow Oscar winner Christopher Walken also collect paychecks in a film about a guy who becomes a cat. Maybe if we write more about it, we’ll begin to believe it – and that this particular cast ever agreed to do it.

One of the bigger stories coming from a rather sleepy spring training was The New York Mets’ decision to release shortstop Ruben Tejada, which was surprising for a couple of reasons.

was on the receiving end of a controversial slide by The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Chase Utley during the playoffs; Tejada ended up with a broken leg, which knocked the shortstop out of the rest of the post-season. While the signing was overshadowed by that of Yoenis Cespedes, the Mets invested in the ballpark of $18 million over two years for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.

Three weeks into spring training, Cabrera started suffering from a sore left knee, and had to be shut down for weeks.

The conventional wisdom was that Tejada would serve as a fairly inexpensive insurance policy for Cabrera, but general manager Sandy Alderson, who reportedly was never a fan of Tejada’s work ethic, elected to go

BVL's New Initiative: Bowling For Veterans (BVL) has introduced a nationwide effort, “Care, Connect, Contribute,” created to increase funding during 2016 for the organization's mission to brighten veteran's lives (which is what the “BVL” acronym means). BVL is currently seeking commitments from bowling centers, manufacturers, suppliers, and vendors to pledge donations.

Mets captain David Wright showed why he’s so deserving of that title last month for reasons that had nothing to with his on-field heroics.

Wright was one of the moving speakers at the Citi Field memorial service for Mets senior public relations director Shannon Forde, who succumbed to breast cancer at 44. Wright joked that he wanted to prepare a speech, but that Shannon would have laughed at him, so he spoke extemporaneously and eloquently.

Kudos also must be given to Shannon’s longtime boss, Jay Horwitz, who gave a heartfelt eulogy as well.

There are few more consumed with the Mets than Greg Prince, who runs Ruben one of the better-known fan blogs, Tejada Faith And Fear In Flushing. Prince has authored Amazin’ Again (Sports Publishing), which recaps the up-down-and-up 2015 season.

As usual, Prince is his usual literate, and yes, obsessive self. I learned from reading this book that outfielder Michael Conforto became the 1,000th player to wear a Mets uniform.

Adelphi University sports journalism professor Brett Topel has researched an arcane aspect of the Mets’ former home, Shea Stadium. When Yankee Stadium was being renovated in 1975, Shea played host to the Yankees, Mets, and Jets. Topel recalls what plans,” said BVL board chairman John LaSpina, owner of one of the region's biggest independent bowling chains, Maple Family Centers, in a press release. “However, to truly meet our goals in serving those who served our country, we can and must do more to ensure that BVL is truly successful.”

CBS has announced that it will sell off its owned and operated radio stations around the country. Apparently, radio is not the revenue generator it once was. This is somewhat surprising, since CBS has made a big investment in recent years with its CBS Radio Sports

Network, which can be heard locally on WFAS (1230 AM). WFAN is owned by CBS, and there will definitely be repercussions if and when WFAN (660 AM and 101.9 FM) is in the hands of a new owner. My guess is that Cumulus, Citadel, or any other radio group will try to rein in all costs, including those of air personalities. Perhaps Mike Francesa really is being honest when he says that his current contract, which runs through the end of 2017, will be his last. One of CBS’ other area radio properties is 50,000-watt WPHT (1210 AM) which many baby boomers will remember from its old call letters, WCAU; it can be heard fairly easily, albeit with static, at times in most parts of the area. This will be the first season in a long time that Phillies games will not be broadcast on WPHT. That’s a shame, because it is always fun to eavesdrop on games and to hear the terrific and relaxed teamwork of broadcasters Scott Franzke and Larry Anderson. Mets fans always learn new things about their team when listening to a Mets-Phillies game on the Phillies’ radio or television outlets.

Former St. John’s University men’s basketball head coach Steve Lavin was a panelist at the Big East Conference’s annual basketball roundtable at The Theater at Madison Square Garden last month.

Lavin talked about how the big three athletic apparel companies – Nike, Under Armour, and Adidas – have created traveling amateur basketball leagues for hoops phenomenons as young as 10 years old.

“Kids are more likely to listen to their sneaker company team coaches than their high school coaches,” he said disapprovingly.

Lavin, who has alternated between head Steve Lavin coaching and national sportscasting during the course of the last decade, said that while he enjoys being a color analyst for Fox Sports 1, he would jump back into coaching if the right offer were to come along.

Hops & Props Was Tops: From Belmont State Park to Montauk, Long Island is known for its array of outstanding craft beer and food festivals. The Cradle Of Aviation Museum in Garden City recently hosted the third annual Hops & Props Craft Beer Festival, and again many Long Island breweries participated in this huge event.

For the first time, this year’s show was 100 percent craft and draft beer,

giving attendees great blends of home-brewed beers and ciders from throughout the area. Among the many companies throughout the museum’s flight-themed venue were Barrier Brewery, HandGrenades HomeBrew Club, and Black Hog Brewing Company, who offered delicous hand-crafted fare. Each brewing company took pride in their latest blends, and poured each four-ounce glass with anticipation, as some batches were finished just weeks before this event.

Electric Avenue Profiles: Murphy’s Music • Melville Visitors to Murphy's Music in Melville often think that owner Jeff Frohman has his head in the clouds. Multi-tasking from opening to close, Jeff would have a good excuse, however: The affable owner has had his pilot's license since his senior year of high school, and flies private planes. Likewise, his trip to Murphy's is a fascinating journey.

Murphy's was founded in 1984 by Bob Murphy, and has its roots in Straub & Favila music stores, legendary retailers in their day.

Murphy did guitar repairs, and when he opened his store, he built up quite a following.

Enter Jeff, who started hanging out at Murphy's in 1991, working for merchandise, not bucks. He picked up the business, and before you could say Captain Video he had become manager in 1998. In 2007, Jeff bought the Murphy's store, and the rest has been a roller coaster ride.

Murphy's has earned its reputation by making customers feel at home, perhaps a throwback to Jeff's MI groupie days. Murphy's has become one of Martin Guitars’ best dealers and warranty centers, and is rightly proud of its repair center. Jeff and his team scout companies looking for great brands, that's why he features G & L Guitars, part of the heritage of Leo Fender, plus Dean and Washburn Guitars, as well as Lag Acoustic, a custom builder from Southern France.

Jeff says that part of the reason for their success is Murphy's deep roots in the community. They contribute to everything from scholarships for kids to band ensemble programs where budding young musicians learn how to put together a group. They give lessons on nearly every instrument, plus voice.

For every ying there's a yang, and Jordan, Murphy's manager, is the perfect counterpoint to Jeff's casual personality. Jordan is Mr. MI; his knowledge of instruments is encyclopedic.

Jordan arrived at Murphy's from the national band touring scene, and soon became a vital part of the operation. “Jordan, how much is that 1922 Fender Reverse Strat in pink?” Jeff will query. No need to check the computer, as Jordan will give Jeff the skinny on the make, model and history.

Performance Billy Joel • Madison Square Garden • New York City The “Piano Man” continued his record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden with this letter-perfect March performance, and proved yet again why his name hangs from the rafters at “the world’s most famous arena.” Opening with “Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway),” Joel’s vocal range was stellar, as crystal clear as the day the track was recorded. Whimsically dedicating “The Entertainer” to Donald Trump, Joel seemed to be having a good time throughout the proceedings. After soaring through “Vienna” and “New York State Of Mind,” Joel brought out classical violinist Itzhak Perlman for “The Downeaster Alexa” and “Where’s The Orchestra.” Joel even picked up a red electric guitar and rocked out with Perlman on “We Didn’t Start The Fire.”

An obvious finish to the set was his signature “Piano Man”; Joel and his crack band (featuring Mike Delguidice of Big Shot) encored with several songs, including “Uptown Girl,” “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me,” “Only The Good Die Young,” and more. Following his sparkling performance of 23 hit songs, it was clear that Joel’s historic MSG residency might never end.

These events will headine on The Bellmore Movies’ lavish live stage, and the search is on for all kinds of talent – magicians, comedians, singers, improvisational groups, ventriloquists, acoustic acts, and more.

“We’re looking to do a talent search and show – old school, somewhat like vaudeville,” said area entertainment professional Gary Smith of New York Entertainment Club; he’s well-known in for his long stint at The Brokerage, one of the area’s top venues. “We’d also like to have a keyboard player to fill time between the acts, and be used when needs for the singers, and more. The emcee will be Rick Morgan, an established comic and producer from Long Island ... I see this as a great night out.

Who: Lisa Vetrone is a 22-year-old '60s- and '70s-inspired blues/rock/pop singer/songwriter based in Long Island. Selected as one of the most talented high-school students in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area, Vetrone was a finalist on the MSG Varsity Talent Show, which aired on television in 2012. Along with being a featured performer in both Singer-Songwriter Sessions and Chick Singer Night, she is a member of the New York Songwriter's Circle and has performed at various events and venues in New York City, including famed venues such as The Bitter End, Cafe Wha, and The Village Underground. In 2015, Vetrone was selected out of thousands as a semifinalist for Gold Coast's “Your Big Break” showcase. In addition to performing original material with her band, Vetrone is also currently a member of the band Just Sixties, the long-running '60s tribute.

The Artist & Her Sound: Vetrone released her self-titled EP on March 1. The five-song album, recorded at Sabella Studios in Roslyn, features the original songs "Heavy Love," "1969," and "Wanderlust," as well as two acoustic bonus tracks, "Ain't No Fool" and "Johnnie Walker." The self-titled EP will be streaming free, and is available for download, on the Internet music platform Bandcamp at lisavetrone.bandcamp.com. Appearing and working on the EP were James Sabella (guitar, producer), Matt Murphy (engineer), Cosmo Miliardi (bass, keys), Glen Goldman (guitar), Matt Rullo (drums), and Michael Gerver (acoustic guitar).

The Imperial Iggy: Who would have believed that the third member of the early ’70s unholy trinity, Iggy Pop, would have been the last man standing, still alive and well? The other two key figures, David Bowie and Lou Reed, have passed away, leaving Iggy to still represent the brief glory that was

the one who started it all. Iggy continued to get record deals and release enjoyable albums (including New Values and Soldier), but to minimal record sales and almost nonexistent airplay (outside of college stations, of course).

The ’80s came along, next New Wave came along, and MTV came along – and suddenly everyone knew and loved Iggy (including those who never loved him when he needed and deserved the love, but we all know how that goes). A&M Records signed him, MTV interviewed him, and suddenly his cover of "Real Wild Child (I'm A Wild One)" was being played on Z100 New York, and it was also used as a backdrop for an FTD commercial.

"Lust For Life" was used for a Carnival Cruise commercial, and also in the soundtrack of the trendy hit film Trainspotting (one of the main characters was a huge Iggy fan).

MainMan, the Bowie-based management company that had all three under the same roof at one point in time (1972 to 1973) while Bowie was gifting us with his Aladdin Sane, while Reed gave birth to Transformer. It was Iggy & The Stooges’ MainMan album, Raw Power, that forever changed the world; the disc, which Clive Davis was talked into releasing by MainMan, was shunned by radio, ignored by record buyers, and mocked as a noisy

shambles by the rock establishment ... when it was released. Now, it is hailed as a groundbreaking classic, the birth of speed metal, the birth of punk, the birth of hardcore, the birth of anarchy – and the birth of the next 40 years.

The sad truth is that no one expected Iggy to make it past 1979. He was always broken, teeth missing, laying in the gutter outside Rodney's English Disco waiting to be rescued, usually by Bowie. The early Stooges albums were, as mentioned above, commercial disasters, and most people looked at the band, and Iggy, as an ongoing joke, dynamic and exciting but totally out of the realm of prosperity. He eventually got signed to RCA via the good graces of Bowie, who was one of the label’s biggest stars, and together they delivered the albums The Idiot and Lust For Life, neither of which became mainstream hits but proved to be wildly influential in the years and decades to come.

Iggy's legend became more stable and polished, and he made the rounds of TV talk shows (even Dinah Shore!).

The late ’70s punk/new wave movement hailed him as its “godfather,”

"Lust For Life" was reissued as a single more than 10 years after it was recorded, and became another Z100 mid-sized hit. This was mindblowing to a longtime Iggy fan like me, who always thought he deserved more; nothing was more shocking than watching straight-laced Ryan Seacrest introducie Iggy on "American Idol" to perform that first commercial breakthrough, "Real Wild Child," while undulating in front of a stunned and confused Jennifer Lopez. Yes, Iggy had arrived.

Iggy and his band are still on the boards. In more recent times, they toured the Raw Power album in big venues, were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, and hopefully made some real money. A TV ad for Audi uses "Search And Destroy," and it sounds more propulsive now than it ever did before. Iggy his group have released a new, big-selling album, Post Pop Depression, which is very much in the tradition of the RCA albums that Iggy did with Bowie. The album is a must, he'll be touring in support of it, and you really need to see him live.

Joe Walsh and Bad Company have announced their “One Hell Of A Night” coheadlining national tour.

It's a trek that will bring them to Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh on June 14.

As coheadliners, the acts will rotate the headlining spot each show. As for who will headline in what city, Walsh playfully quipped: “I told Paul, if it’s a long bus ride I go first!”

"I had always hoped that we would do something together, and so here we are 30 years later finally touring Joe together,” Bad Walsh Company lead singer Paul Rodgers said. “It has taken us this long so I wouldn't miss this. Shop At Kroger’s: Her New Single

New York-based folk/rock singer/songwriter Jo Kroger has announced the release of her new single, “Simplest.”

Mastered by Oscar Zambrano, the track is the first song released from Kroger’s new EP, The Simplest, now in stores.

After moving to New York from Cincinnati, Kroger met Brooklyn producer Erik Braund (X Ambassadors, Courtney Love), who taught her how to use Pro Tools.

She soon became part of the singer/songwriter community in Manhattan, gaining mentorship from the Grammy-nominated country artist Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Her first EP, Troubled Night, was released in 2013.

Shortly after its release, Kroger went on to tour Western Europe when she learned that her father was in the advanced stages of cancer. She put everything on hold as his health deteriorated; after his passing, Kroger believed she would never play again. The Simplest EP is about getting up and brushing off when life knocks you off your feet, the artist stated.
