Although Batman v Superman at press time had grossed a ridiculous $311 million domestically as we went to press, the critics weren't enthused. After the noisy and unfocused Avengers: Age Of Ultron last year, this series needs to both be profitable and a good film this time out; even comic book fans won't accept anything less than the best for all that
Rock’s ‘First Family’ Has Strong Long Island Ties – & They Return With A New Concept
one of the most heavily played artists on the music channel. She was signed to Chrysalis Records by co-founder Terry Ellis. In the spring of 1979, producer Mike Chapman introduced Benatar to Neil Giraldo, an up-and-coming guitarist. Giraldo began his career in 1978 as a member of Rick Derringer’s band after beating out 200 other guitarists for the position. Chapman felt Benatar needed a musical director and partner who could establish a more aggressive sound, and thought Giraldo was the perfect choice. In Giraldo, Benatar found someone as strong as her, someone who could match the same firepower, someone who could inspire her, while being inspired
by her. Their connection was instantaneous; it was, indeed, a perfect fit. Benatar’s album In the Heat Of The Night was recorded in 1979. This was the first time the world was introduced to Giraldo and Benatar’s enduring partnership and their rock ‘n’ roll love affair. The album, which included the classic “Heartbreaker” as well as the Giraldo-penned hit “We Live For Love,” went platinum. It was only the beggining of a union that has gone on to unprecidented success, leading to a lifetime of hit music – as well as a horde of loyal fans, particularly in this area, that will welcome the couple back for this special acoustic performance.

Harvey was miffed at how the tabloids made double entendre pee-pee jokes following the discovery of blood clots in his urine. Happily, the clots passed through, and he was fine. Harvey could have taken the high road and provide a public service if he had

The BVL Open Is Back: The 2016 edition of the Johnny Petraglia BVL Open will be May 7 through 10 at Farmingale Lanes; once again, the tournament will feature a Pro-Am that all area bowlers can take part in. The retirement of New York Jets offensive tackle and Freeport High School alum D’Brickashaw Ferguson, who played 10 years and never missed a game in that time period, did not get the attention it deserved. His play slipped a bit last year, and the Jets reportedly wanted him to take a cut in pay ostensibly so that they could re-sign quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ferguson said that the Jets’ public discussion of reworking his contract did not affect his decision, as he was thinking about calling it quits. I think that he was being diplomatic and did not want to burn any bridges with the only employer he had in his distinguished NFL career. Jordan Spieth, considered America’s most promising gold star since Tiger Woods, had to settle for second place tie with Lee Westwood at the Masters after an up-anddown final round. The winner was relatively unheralded Danny Willett from Great Britain. The best story of the Masters, however, was the uexpected performance of 58-year-old Bernhard Langer, who was in contention for the green jacket until he fell back to earth with a six-over-par final round. The oldest person to ever win a golf major was the late Julius Boros, who won the PGA Championship in 1968 at age 48.

House Of Vans celebrated its 50th anniversary with events in 10 cities, and at this Brooklyn skate park the poetic rap icon Nas and Brooklyn’s hottest experimental rock act, Yeasayer, headlined this commemorative show for lucky attendees. Packed inside the industrial arena were lots of commemorative goodies and food, while the music never stopped. Yeasayer rocked the crowd for 45 minutes, rattling the floor and setting the tone for what proved to be a wild evening. Nas delivered, as
always, flipping through his time machine-like catalog of hits, displaying his lyrical genius. Leaving a lasting impression on the attendees, House Of Vans knew how to throw a huge party while showing its appreciation to its loyal fans. Any event this House throws is certainly worth attending ... or crashing.

It was the second time we have noticed a phenomenon that seem to only happen for veteran rock/blues/R&B star Boz Scaggs, the same way it did at his NYCB Theatre show two years back: Scaggs announced he was going to perform songs from his newest album ... and the crowd cheered. Though not quite as blues-laden as the NYCB show, this Flushing performance proved that Scaggs and his eightmember band remains a soulful, earthy delight (and even managed to triumph over a horrific sound mix hat sounded just like a 1970s transistor radio, complete with an utter lack of bass and low end). Sound quibbles aside, Scaggs accomplished just about everything you’d hope from a performing artist, including not one but two encores, which shocked about a quarter of the audience which was already filing out of the aging theater. Of course, the hits were there (the classic “Lido Shuffle” and “Lowdown,” their clones “Jo Jo” and “Breakdown Dead Ahead”), but so were some great versions of blues and roots songs incluing Willie DeVille’s “Mixed Up Shook Up Girl” and Little Millet’s oft-covered “Rich Woman,” one of the best tracks from Scaggs’ most recent album, A Fool To Care. There are only a few artists who came to fame in the 1970s – Burton Cummings and Bonnie Raitt spring to mind – who are far better performers in their sixties then they were in their twenties. It’s safe to list Scaggs as well.

England’s soulful signer/songwriter headlined this still-new venue for the first time, and Stone’s strong presence and riveting voice were apparent from the start of the show. Her sexy tone and rasp offered a hint of 1960s soul music, which is a huge influence on the singer’s canon. “Super Duper Love” and “Let Me Breathe” delivered raw, emotional lyrics that resonated with the crowd. Her single “You Had Me” was also a favorite here. Dressed in white, the singer almost shined off the stage when the lights dimmed, and barely seemed to break a sweat as she shook the walls. Stone hasn’t performed much in these parts, but based on this performance, she’ll be welcomed back when she chooses to return.

and raised in upsate Tarrytown. “As a kid I listened to rock ’n’ roll and whatever else was on the radio,” said Bromberg. “I discovered Pete Seeger and The Weavers and, through them, Reverend Gary Davis. I then discovered Big Bill Broonzy, who led me to Muddy Waters and the Chicago blues. This was more or less the same time I discovered Flatt and Scruggs, which led to Bill Monroe and Doc Watson.” The artist began studying guitar at 13, and eventually enrolled in Columbia University as a musicology major. A Rare Artist Who Has Made Blues & Roots Music Accessible To Millions For Decades
scene in the mid-’60s drew him to the downtown clubs and coffeehouses, where he could watch and learn from the best performers, including primary sources such as his inspiration and teacher, the Reverend Gary Davis. An unexpected and wildly successful solo spot for 600,000 concert goers at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in Great Britain led to a solo deal with Columbia Records, for whom Bromberg recorded four albums. His eponymous 1971 debut included “The Holdup,” a songwriting collaboration with former Beatle George Harrison, who also played slide guitar on the track. David also met The Grateful Dead and wound up with four of their
members playing on his next two albums. Bromberg’s material, based in the folk and blues idioms, continually expanded with each new album to encompass bluegrass, ragtime, country, and ethnic music, and his touring band grew apace. By the mid-’70s, The David Bromberg Big Band included horn players, a violinist, and several multi-instrumentalists. The current David Bromberg Band includes himself, also a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, vocals, mandolin, fiddle), Mark Cosgrove (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Robert “Butch” Amoit (bass, vocals), Nate Grower (fiddle, guitar, mandolin, vocals), and Josh Kanusky (drums, vocals).

February 5 marked the release of Chromaparagon, the debut full-length album by the self-described “heavy rock / aggressive progressive” Long Island-based band Moon Tooth. The group is comprised of Nick Lee (guitar and vocals), Ray Marte (drums, vocals), John Carbone (vocals, percussion), and Vin Romanelli (bass). A fireworks display of melody and rhythm, Chromaparagon is more than that too – its progressive, aggressive sound is brimming with soul, riddled with hairpin turns, and delivered with the grace and swing of real virtuosos. Over the course of 12 songs, Moon Tooth mashes together rock, metal, and blues into a fusion that bursts with color. There are few limits here. Moon Tooth possesses the imagination and skill to swerve into whatever musical direction it wants. But this band wanders without getting lost; it channels its wild dreaming and black-belt chops into an album that drives forward with purpose. Frontman John Carbone carries forth the tradition of singers with the range and the courage to go for it. Like Jeff Buckley, Into Another's Richie Birkenhead or Shudder to Think's Craig Wedren, Carbone belts it out with a soaring voice that can command quiet subtlety as well as arena-rocking operatics. In poetic, modern-mythic phrases, his lyrics address themes of, in his own words, "trials, perseverance, victory ... answering the call of adventure, following what you know to be your true purpose even in the face of danger, uncertainty, and fear." "I made love to my ordeals / By light of holy fire / A lion rearing under ash / All the beasts of un-days loomed / And I saw Mars stand," Carbone sings on the song "Igneous." Guitarist Nick Lee (also the newest member of veteran heavy metal act Riot, now known as Riot V) extracts entire worlds out of his instrument. His dexterity is matched only by his soulfulness. Backing him are bassist Vincent Romanelli and drummer Ray Marte, who glide swiftly from tasty grooves and rhythmic illusions to full-on metal muscularity. Loosely speaking, some modern-day reference points include The Mars Volta, Mastodon, and Between The Buried And Me. But Moon Tooth is its own, unique act. Chromaparagon was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Moon Tooth drummer Ray Marte. The vivid cover art was created by Jon Contino. It is preceded by the band's 2013 debut EP, Freaks. An Unexepected Demise: It is sad and incredible how many major, iconic, and not-so-major figures in the pop and rock music universe have died during the last several months. Now Prince has been added to the list; it was in this column that I not so long ago ranted about how MTV
studio became his primary concern. The music business had also changed, impacted by the Internet, piracy, illegal downloads, and other events that obviously did not please him. He managed to avoid the fate of his one-time competitor, Michael Jackson, but seemed to withdraw to more selective projects and appearances. His most recent major sighting before his death was playing onstage at The Fox Theatre, where he paid tribute to David Bowie with a rendition of "Heroes." It's strange how these things play out sometimes, as Prince joins the parade of deceased giants of their trade. As those of us who've been around a long time know, these are the end times for this type of lineage, with the new version of pop life producing different types of stars. A Bowie Book: If there is any author firmly associated with Bowie, it is Dave Thompson, the authority on the changes and impact of the Prince: glam rock 1958-2016 king. Thompson has a definitive array of Bowie books to his credit, all worthy reads – and now, in the wake of "Ziggy's'” death comes The Freakiest Show: The Armchair Guide To David Bowie Cover Versions 1964-2016, available via Amazon as a paperback or download. It is mind-boggling how many singers and bands took the Bowie catalog to heart, and the more than 200 pages of this book bring that fact home; it's a must for Bowie fans. I have the honor of sharing a page with Tina Turner, as we both covered "1984" (my cover was with The Psychotic Frogs, and included the entire "1984/You Didn't Hear It From Me" that first was seen and heard in Bowie's 1980 Floor Show on NBC TV's “Midnight Special” in the early 1970s). This tome encapsulates the decades of Bowie and how he changed the world of contemporary music; do check it out.

needed to return to music programming, and ironically, at the moment I am writing this, they have cleared all their regular programming for a non-stop marathon of Prince videos. Along with Michael Jackson and Madonna, Prince was one of the megastars of '80s MTV and beyond, and the network made the right move at this very sad moment to let his music dominate the channel once again. Prince first came to my attention in 1979, when his hit, "I Wanna Be Your Lover," landed him an appearance on “American Band-stand” with Dick Clark. Even then, when Prince was basically an unknown, he was already quirky and enigmatic (and as I recall, Clark was not amused). Yet, things only got more pronounced with "Little Red Corvette," "1999," and more; the race was on, and from that point, it never stopped. Prince's film debut in Purple Rain made him an international superstar, as did his award-winning music videos which seemed to be in constant rotation on the wildly popular MTV circa 1984. He had a continuous string of Top 10 singles, and went on to score the first Batman film. As the decades progressed, Prince became more reclusive, more jazzy, and less hit oriented. He would show up on music award shows, tour when the mood struck him, and invest time and money in different artists, as his own record label and
