Break is about to hit Long Island, with an new location opening in Syosset this summer. Originating in Seattle, Puzzle Break is one of the longestrunning puzzle rooms in the United States. Games take place Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with private and corporate events available. The puzzle rooms have become popular across the country for get-togethers with family and friends, team-building exercises, and more. "We are very pleased to announce the expansion of Puzzle Break to Long Island, an area that has shown much demand for awesome, immersive entertainment, and we've got the best in the business," said Nate Martin, founder of Puzzle Break. DeAngelis Is Back: On May 17, former 1010 WINS morning news anchor Judy DeAngelis returned to the airwaves as the host of WFDU’s Tuesday version of “RetroRadio.” On the show, DeAngelis plays her favorite “comfort food” popular music from the '50s, '60s, and '70s; her show puts an emphasis on taking requests from listeners. While DeAngelis worked as a radio news anchor in the New York metropolitan area for almost 40 years (and also served as a cohost of sorts on Alan Colmes’ AM radio show during the waning days of WNBC; she also worked with Don Imus and Soupy Sales at the station), she has always had a passion for music. She had a career as a singer in musical theater as a cast member of the Broadway show Rockabye Hamlet, as well as in her own one-woman show An Evening With Judy along with work in summer stock theater. WFDU is at 89.1 on the FM dial; we think it’s been about 10 years since we typed in a statement like that … Recently re-released, and with relish: The 1950 version of The

The ELP Legacy: Carl Palmer, among the most renowned drummers in rock history and a founding member of Emerson Lake & Palmer and Asia, is returning to the United States and Canada for a tour he has decided to name “The 2016 Remembering Keith & The Music Of Emerson Lake & Palmer Tour.” Originally designed to be a celebration of Palmer’s 50th year in music, the focus and name of the tour was changed in light of the death of his longtime friend and collaborator, Keith Emerson, on March 11. “I will deeply miss Keith, and I want you all to know I will carry on flying the ELP banner and playing the great music with my band for many years to come,” said Palmer

in a statement. “We have lost a very talented and gifted musician, but this great music will continue for a long, long time.” To honor his friend and former bandmate, Palmer, in association with Audio One, will present a special show: “Pictures At An Exhibition – A Tribute To Keith Emerson,” which will feature music by Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy band with special guests, cinematic images, and performances by The Center For Contemporary Dance, who will interpret the music of Emerson Lake & Palmer in contemporary dance segments combined with backing from Palmer and his band. The tribute show, which will also include other guest musicians yet to be announced, will be staged one night only, Friday, June 24 at Miami, Florida’s Olympia Theater. other composers. Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy is a power trio that features Palmer on drums and percussion, teaming with guitarist Paul Bielatowicz, and bassist Simon Fitzpatrick; fans who have seen the trio have reacted to the group with racous ovations and rave reviews. “Since 2001, I have been playing with my own power trio, replacing the keyboards with electric guitar,” said Palmer. “I felt that was the only honest way to approach the music of ELP. I didn’t want to have a singer trying to sound like Greg Lake. ELP did so much instrumental music, this format made sense to me. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn Directed by Bryan Singer 20th Century Fox We like to cut to the heart of the matter in this column, so here’s the real scoop why so many people were looking forward to this latest Marvel-based superhero epic: Olivia Munn – the college set’s sex symbol since her days as a host on G4’s pop culture program “Attack Of The Show!,” making her the fantasy of a legion of PlayStation and Xbox nerds – is cast as Psylocke, and the pre-release posters alone had geeks ordering tickets on Fandango months ago. Sure, slacker nation has a point: Munn (right) is spectacular in tight Spandex. But it’s going to take more than a barely clad brunette babe to keep this series hot – the last film, X-Men: Days Of Future Past two years ago, raked in an astonishing $748 million across the globe. That’s a lot to live up to; in a summer where we’ve sat through Batman tussling with Superman and Iron Man at loggerheads with Captain America … is America finally subject to superhero overload? Sexual slavery and pedophilia – two hotbutton topics – are creating theatrical fireworks on Broadway. After a sold-out run at The Public Theater, the powerful and moving Eclipsed marks the auspicious Broadway debuts of Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and playwright and actress Danai Gurira (whose Familiar is currently at Playwrights Horizons). Groundbreaking as the first Broadway play
Based on this film, the answer might be a surprising “maybe.” The mega-cast merges existing heroes with new faces, and as the Spider-Man and Hulk films have proven, even semi-reboots can have a decent chance of alienating comics fans (think “Fantastic 4”). The nuts and bolts: The “Apocalypse” is actually a super villain of that name, and he’s been in hibernation for thousands of years – so, naturally, he has a lot of catching up to do. Cities are wiped out in spectacular fashion, so protective and dominating mother hen who rules their tiny society. Wife #3, very pregnant with the C.O.’s child, obsesses about her wig. Their attempt to hide a 15-year-old orphan (the luminous Nyong’o) from the C.O. Fails, and The Girl becomes Wife # 4. Ultimately, Wife #2 (Zainab Jah), who returns as a ruthless

whose playwright, director (Liesl Tommy), and entire splendid cast are African-American women (with connections to Africa), Eclipsed is also notable for Gurira’s great skill in infusing such a harrowing subject with humor and hope. Set in 2003 during Liberia’s Second Civil War, Eclipsed tells the horrific story of the girls – equally victims and survivors – ripped from their families and turned into sex slaves for the warring soldiers. Two women (their identities lost to the war), known only as Wife #1 (Saycon Sengbloh) and Wife #3 (Pascale Armand), share a barren bullet-pocked concrete shack in a military compound where they wait to be summoned by the commanding officer for sex. Wife #1, the eldest at 25, is the
soldier flourishing an assault rifle, and Rita (Akosua Busia), a peace worker with the Liberian Women’s Initiative, vie for The Girl’s soul. With great compassion and humanity, Gurira celebrates the women’s resiliency as they compete for the C.O.’s favor and make do with almost nothing, ultimately regaining their names and finding hope. Fifteen years ago, when he was 40 and she was 12, Ray and Una had a three-month affair.
the world’s favorite mutants both young and old do battle with, once again, “the greatest threat the world has ever known.” And, yes, the action sequences are beyond spectacular; directory Bryan Singer proves he can throw a visual haymaker like few others. X-Men: Apocalypse is … okay. The biggest battle, however, will be on Box Office Mojo, where there will keep a keen eye on receipts. Will we see The Beast at Golden Corral? Unlike Professior Xavier, we’re not sure. Was he a sexual predator and pedophile preying on her innocence and romantic feelings, or was it true love, a love neither has been able to find again? Now, Una has tracked down Ray (now called Peter) at his workplace (the soulless littered staff breakroom set is by Scott Pask) where, after serving time in prison and assuming a new identity, he has forged a new life. The confrontation between these two damaged souls is incendiary, and is the basis for Blackbird. Scottish playwright David Harrower’s 2005 explosive, taut two-character drama was first seen off-Broadway at The Manhattan Theatre Club in 2007 starring Jeff Daniels and Alison Pill. Joe Mantello again directs Daniels with Michelle Williams now playing Una, but the explosive tension has been ratcheted up to an almost unbearable degree – Daniels furious and defensive, Williams visibly shaking, her speech halting in anger and pain. Their emotions seesaw from fear to self-justification, shame to attraction as they relive the trauma and remember the love in their forbidden relationship. Unfortunately, these riveting, intense performances at times feel like dazzling actors’ exercises, while the play itself seems like a cleverly constructed issue-oriented thesis. – Jane Klain

The cold reality was that the Islanders offense often appeared to be only superstar center John Tavares and four other guys on the ice. When The Lightning basically turned Tavares into a ghost starting with Game 2, the Islanders’ scoring died. It also didn’t help New York that Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop had no trouble stopping what few shots on the net that did come his way. Incoming Islanders owners Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin have their work cut out for them – and it goes beyond deciding if they will try to re-sign free agents Matt Martin, Frans Nielsen, and Kyle Okposo: The fan experience at Barclays Center, in the midst of being remodeled, was not John Tavares a good one. Sure, the veteran standup Bobby Collins was the headliner for this triple bill of comedians on a spring Saturday night, and he was his usual acerbic yet charming self. Yes, Talia Reese ranks one of the best of the new breed of east coast standups (though her ironic, Stevie GB hip style, at times, seemed to fly over the heads of what turned out to be an older crowd). It was all to be expected, but as we left this landmark Nassau theater, we were left with one thought: Stevie GB, seemingly locked into the local scene, is as uproarious an any comedian working today – and we mean everywhere. After seeing him several times of late, we're always wondering how this grizzled veteran would fare on a national tour; yeah, he's that good. Many area comedians sprinkle the travails of life in Long Island into their sets, but few do it The Marlin Room At Webster Hall • New York City more skillfully – or hit home as well Denver's new-age folk rockers headlined this “private concert” for SiriusXM – as Stevie, the self-proclaimed subscribers at Webster Hall’s intimate Marlin room in New York City. You Should Have Been There Olate Dogs YMCA Boulton Center • Bay Shore Big Apple Circus: The Grand Tour Cunningham Park, Oakland Gardens, Queens If you believe that comedy dog shows and a big top circus are just for small children, you're only half right: Two recent family friendly performances we attended attracted lots of collage-age couples and full-grown adults, who loved the mischievous antics and feats of daring-do as much as the small fry. Yeah, we went to the dogs: Olate Dogs first received national attention by winning NBC's “America's Got Talent,” and has parlayed that feat into headlining a national tour. Chile's Richard and Nicholas Olate are superb dog trainers, coaxing their array of poodles, labradoodles, Maltese, and other pooches into dancing, walking on their hind legs, jumping over obstacles, driving cars, and, in one hilarious case, doing nothing at all. The best aspect of the Olates is that they truly love their family of canines, and it's obvious their care for their four-legged friends has led to the dogs' amazing and innate trust. All in all, this is a funny though slightly padded (acoustic music, juggling, unicycles) show that surely made us sit up and take notice. Another dog show led by Jenny Vidbel is one of the attractions of this year's run of The Big Apple Circus, dubbed “The Grand Tour.” Ringmaster John Kennedy Kane was born to do this job – he's a letter perfect master of ceremonies and a deft comedian – and the current show, written by head clown Joel Jeske, is the best the BAC has presented in years, full of laughs and thrills without a shred of pretentiousness. And, yeah, it's hard not to sit on the edge of the seat watching Erick and Jayson Dominguez hurl themsevles into the air during their seemingly death-defying “Wheel Of Wonder” acrobatics. The Paramount • Huntington After nearly an hour of the oddest opener ever in Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masters Luchafer, fans were ready for the hauntingly experimental rock group Puscifer, derived from the deranged mind of Tool’s James Maynard Keenan. Here to promote the new album Money Shot Round 2, the band chose to play video messages on big screens before taking the stage. Taking a page from his usual book, the masked though nattily dressed Keenan added a little political propaganda (which always riles up a rock show) to the proceedings, as “Simultaneous” served as a perfect opener; the singer’s deeply ominous vocals vibrated the walls. “Agostina,” “Horizons,” and “The Remedy” were performed with precision; singer Carina Round showed off her strong pipes and took over the lead vocalist duties for “Rev: 22:20.” This band offers a modern twist, sort of acid rock meets concept rock, the possible soundtrack for the waiting room to hell. Packaging 20 dark, menacing songs with masked wrestlers and a stellar band, it’s easy to wonder what the truly unusual Maynard James Keenan will come up with next. – Text and photo by Christopher Jon Smaragdas

Opens Rock Hall Of Fame Exhibit
Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, who testified at the 1985 Senate Hearing on Parental Advisory, opened a major new exhibit, “Louder Than Words: Rock, Power, & Politics,” on May 19 at The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. As that city prepares for the 2016 Republican National Convention, the Rock Hall has opened a timely exhibit around rock and politics. “Louder Than Words: Rock, Power & Politics” looks at some of the most important debates in our country through the lens of rock music. The exhibit includes exclusive video interviews with Bono, David Byrne, Snider, Tom Morello, Lars Ulrich, Gloria Estefan, Gregg Allman, Jimmy Carter, and others, and combines them with interactives, photography and never-before-seen artifacts to examine how music has both shaped and reflected our culture norms on eight political topics: civil rights, LGBT issues, feminism, war and peace, censorship, political campaigns, political causes, and international politics. Long Island native Snider performed an acoustic version of the Twisted Sister classic “We’re Not Gonna Take It” during the opening event on May 19. Snider testified along with Frank Zappa and John Denver at the PRMC Hearings, which had the stated goal of increasing parental control over the access of children to music deemed to have violent, drug-related or sexual themes via labeling albums with “Parental Advisory” stickers. Snider’s artifacts and stories are told in the exhibit, including how Presidential candidate Donald Trump came to use “We’re Not Gonna Take It” as his campaign song. Learn more at rockhall.com.

On May 17, the members of heavy rock band Lamb Of God were awarded RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) gold certification plaques for their 2004 Epic Records release, Ashes Of The Wake. The album was certified gold this past February for sales in excess of 500,000. The plaques were presented by Epic Records’ senior vice president of marketing Scott Carter to the band at The Paramount in Huntington just prior to the band's sold-out performance. Guitarist Mark Morton offered his thoughts on the RIAA certification: "Wow, a gold record in the US! These types of milestones always leave me astounded. When we started this band in a little Richmond, VA basement, we honestly never even dreamed that we would tour all over the world, see so many places and reach so many people with our music. I remain amazed and humbled when I think about the experiences and opportunities I've had the chance to be a part of over the course of our career. It is nothing short of an honor to know that our words and music have touched so many people's lives. Thank you to the Lamb Of fans... each and every one of you. Gibraltar Jazz: Rock-Solid Rhythm
Who: Gibraltar Jazz – Phyllis Novin and Richie Naef – is fast becoming a favorite Long Islandbased jazz duo, with upcoming live performances scheduled at a variety of area venues. The Artists & Their Sound: The duo began its musical collaboration in 1973 performing covers of obscure English and American artists and bands. Within a year, a fire destroyed their studio and equipment, but inspired a new direction: What followed was 25 years of original music and bands, featuring Naef guitar and vocals with Novin on vocals, keyboards, guitar, and flute. Producing complex, orchestrated art rock, they intensified the sound with new wave and punk, and eventually created a unique blend of jazz-rock; during that period, they performed at such storied venues as CBGB, Max's Kansas City, Electric Circus, Mudd Club, My Father’s Place, and Malibu. From the duo’s bio: “The late 1980s saw Novin working in theater in New York City. Naef joined in on many projects, and together they scored and musical directed experimental theater productions and two off-off-Broadway shows. Currently, as part of Lorage Productions, they create music for independent films. One film, Animal Crackers Pentimente, was shown at Cannes Film Festival in 2012, winning many awards since. However, the love of the jazz age and R& B remained; in 2016, the duet Gibraltar Jazz was born. It’s named ‘Gibraltar’ because there is more than a bit of rock in the sound, and ‘Jazz’ for the obvious reasons. Although they work with a full rhythm section at times, in the usual configuration Richie arranges and records the songs, adding drums and bass in the studio. Performing the guitar and vocals live creates the sound of a full band. Gibraltar Jazz has played many different venues, including multiple shows for the Jazz On The Vine concert series, vineyards, clubs, and restaurants (including The Southampton Inn and Montauk Yacht Club), soundtracks, film industry launch parties, corporate and private parties, libraries, and seniors events. The first record is the original album, while the second record collects the single "Dead Or Alive" (which was and is a breathtaking whiff of the 1970s New York City rock scene in all its glory), some B-sides, and a great take on the T.Rex classic "The Wizard." It's so sad that Thunders remains in the shadows, an underground idol, but perhaps this is what was meant to be, as

Post Pop Depression, the new and possibly last (according to him) Iggy Pop album. It's distributed by Concord, a label I've always associated with jazz, so it's quite a trip getting another piece of wax from Iggy under such unusual circumstances. Post Pop made its way up to #17 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, the highest charting record he's ever had in America. It's a real time piece, something to think about adding to your collection. An iconic album that was never given its day in the USA is the solo album by ex-New York Doll Johnny Thunders, So Alone, recorded when he stepped away from his post-Dolls punk era band, The Heartbreakers (he had used the name before Tom Petty). So Alone was released in the UK on the Real Records label, home of The Pretenders; Real had a US deal with Seymour Stein's Sire Records, and while Sire gave Pretenders an American release, the Thunders album was denied similar treatment.
We've heard tales for decades of a falling out between Stein and Thunders, but there was no excuse to not release this. It contains the jarring ballad "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory," which was a hit single just waiting to happen, as well as the finest rock & roll that 1978
subsequent generations discover him and then try to emulate his stance as a take-no-prisoners rocker (who sadly, had a horrific heroin habit). This release is your chance to discover Johnny Thunders. My most expensive recent acquisition is the three-LP import vinyl set Recorded Live Motortown Revue in Paris, one of the early Europe tours for Motown Records' big artists of 1964 and 1965, doing their thing at The Olympia Music Hall. The emcee, Harold Kay, gets the show rolling with Earl Van Dyke & The Soul Brothers, and the parade of artists follow with their latest songs: Martha & The Vandellas doing "Heat Wave" and "Dancing In The Street"; "Little” Stevie Wonder performs "Fingertips” and some album tracks; and then the big names emerge. The Supremes introduce "Come See About Me," "Stop! In The Name Of Love," and "Baby Love," followed by headliners The Miracles, who steal the show by closing out with "Mickey's Monkey." Was it worth every penny, this deluxe three-LP set on heavy vinyl? Oh, yes. Vinyl rules!
