Mysteryland:
As the summer comes into full swing, it brings festival season with it. Ph o to s b y C a i tl yn C a st i l l o Although I may not get to chance to go to every festival I’d like to, I am still lucky enough to get my fix and attend some of the more memorable ones. This summer, after missing the first two yearly events, I was able to EDM attend Mysteryland for the first time. The wait was completely worth it. Nirvana Although the lineup was not as At The stacked as in previous years, the Scene Of With Richard Joseph Branciforte artists that did attend played the Woodstock perfect sets for the audience. Hosting the festival on the Woodstock Festival grounds in upstate Bethel Woods, the ambiance was that old1969 sit-back-and-chill feel. From the way that the festival is laid out to the intricately designed stages, upon entering, you feel at home. The entire festival is on grass, something that not a lot of festivals still have these days, especially the bigger name ones. I felt as if I was truly out in nature and didn’t have anything to indicate otherwise. In addition to the setting, the amount of arts exhibitions was incredible – everything from yoga to fire wielders to an immersive Mysteryland village. While not listening to music, there was a whole host of other things to explore, including a giant inflatable, Lido walk through, glowing environment. There was no limit June 24. This album really showcases Cash Cash’s ability to produce. to the activities to do in Having recently seen them at my school’s spring concert, I know they between acts. can perform live and have the right arsenal to do so. Each stage had its own unique vibe to it. The Boat was a giant ship floating in the middle of this sea of grass, taking the attendees away to another world. The main stage was a beautiful mix of old and new; between the lighting design and the stage design I felt like I was back in the hippie era at Woodstock with a mix of modern EDM. My favorite act, without a doubt, was Griz. As a musician I can really appreciate when an artist incorporates live instrumentation during a set. Griz does this better than anyone I know. Griz plays live saxophone over his songs, which have a funky, jazzy, dubstep flow to them. To me, it’s the perfect blend of musicality with the grimy-ness of dubstep. I speak for everyone in the crowd when I say not a single person could stop moving and jamming out to his set. Including throwbacks such as “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry and “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix, the crowd was taken back to the 60s and 70s while being immersed in the sounds of today. If you haven’t gotten a chance to see Griz, I would highly recommend seeing him somewhere. Honorable mentions for my other favorites go to Skrillex and The Chainsmokers. Skrillex played to the crowd very well, incorporating plenty of new bangers, including some unreleased edits, as well as playing many of his old hits such as “Cinema” and The “Equinox.” Chainsmokers I was also rather impressed by The Chainsmokers.Their set was quite different from what I expected. They have been producing some quality music as of late and they showed it off during their performance. However, whenever they got the chance, they changed it up and dropped some rather heavy bass music, which I was pleased to see. Mysteryland is quite a unique festival and I would say that anyone who hasn’t been should take the opportunity to go. Before I go, I would like to give a quick mention as to what I’ve been listening to recently. Cash Cash released their fourth studio album, Blood, Sweat & 3 Years, on

Fireworks For July 4 ... & Much More
Here's a handy compendium of fireworks, festivals, and more, all surrounding the allAmerican holiday of The Fourth Of July: When most fans from this area think of fireworks, they think of the Grucci family – and they have many big events planned for this summer. On June 30, look for their lavish display at Connetquot River, in Oakdale (scheduled display time is: 9:15 pm); on July 1, 2, and 3 following the Long Island Ducks game at Bethpage Ballpark in Islip (this year's Ducks team features former MLB players Bud Harrelson and Lew Ford as coaches and Kevin Baez as manager); at the rescheduled TB Bank Celebrates America event on July 2 at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow; on July 4 at the Montauk Independence Day Celebration at Umbrella Beach; on July 4 at the annual holiday event at The Pennysaver Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville; and more Grucci events both before and after July 4. Learn much more and get schedules and details at grucci.com. More big bangs and booms to light up the Long Island skies: July 4 brings a huge firework show to Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh.

The cruise sets sail at 7 pm; it's a three and one half-hour journey on the Great South Bay aboard Captain Tim's Northstar II. There are even more fireworks cruises: Regularly scheduled cruises begin on July 4 at 6:30 pm from 405 Main Street in Port Washington; for more information, call (718) 659-8181, or log on to theangler.com. This fireworks cruise on July 4 will depart from Inspiration Wharf and sail past landmarks of the Western Long Island Sound. On display will be ... you guessed it, Fireworks by Grucci once again. The BFG
Summer’s Second Half
Here's a compendium of what we believe (margin of possible error, 100 percent) may very well be the biggest films of summer’s second half, as superheroes lock horns with sci-fi characters, fantasy gremlins, and aging comic actors in search of box office supremacy: The Legend Of Tarzan (Lionsgate, July 1): The loin-clothed vine-swinger may be a bit long in the tooth for today's young audiences to identify Ghostbusters
with, but here's a plus: As Tarzan himself might say: “Mmm … Margot Robbie as Jane. Me like.” Samuel L. Jackson's 46,464th action film of 2016, it would seem. The BFG (Disney, July 1): None other than Stephen Spielberg directs this Suicide fable featuring Mark Rylance Squad as a friendly giant in a world populated by ones who aren't quite as nice in this new epic based on the popular, time-tested Roald Dahl characters. Reads well on paper, but early critics haven't been particularly

its cast – “SNL’s” Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, along with Melissa McCarty – features women instead of men. It won't hurt if the comics are superb, but will young audiences identify with a concept that was a hit in 1984 – which, to the under-20 crowd, might as well a film from the silent period? Our pick for the biggest hit of the summer of 2016: Suicide Squad (Warner Bros/DC, August 6): Margot Robbie (again), supermodel Cara Delvigne, Jared Leto, Will Smith, and a crew of antiheroes with nothing to lose take on the worst scum in the universe in a comedy/action meld that will make the college crowd lose their minds. Batman even makes a guest appearance. Comics fans are gaga over Harley Quinn, and after Robbie portrays her, everyone else will be, too.
large on this one; frankly, we think the BFG looks a little Creep-E. The Secret Life Of Pets (Universal, July 8): A stellar, funny voice cast – Louis C.K., Lake Bell, Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress, Albert Brooks, and more – attempts to show what cats and dogs do when we're not at home. As Donald Trump would say, this is gonna be huuuuge, particularly in the Real 3D format. Ghostbusters (Columbia, July 15): This easily has been the most talked-about film of summer 2016, since

jibes with the bombastic Cosell drew millions of viewers. When Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title for refusing to join the U.S. Army on the basis of being a conscientious objector, it was Cosell, along with ABC Sports boss Roone Arledge, who constantly gave Ali a national forum. In turn, Ali put ABC Sports on the map. Ali also is the most important figure in the creation of the sports pay-per-view market. In the pre-cable television days of the 1960s and 1970s, his heavyweight Muhammad championship fights Ali were beamed into movie theaters around the country; these were known as “closed circuit” events. Although big fights these days take place on Saturday nights, in decades past they occurred on
Monday evenings, since that was the slowest night of the week in the movie theater biz. That’s why the most famous fight of Ali’s career – his battle to retake the heavyweight title from Joe Frazier at Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971 – took place on a Monday. It was a battle of undefeated titans, and Frazier eked out the decision in a fight that went 15 rounds. Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather were small potatoes compared with the interest in that first Ali-Frazier showdown. Ali was also a big fan of professional wrestling, and he loved how the “villains” would rile up fans, who bought tickets in the hopes of seeing the ring ruffians get their comeuppance. Ali frequently insulted his opponents in a manner that would make Donald Trump blush, but to Ali it was just shtick to create revenue. Sadly, Frazier never saw it that way. I attended a press screening of the 2008 HBO documentary, Thrilla in Manila, which detailed the last of their trio of fights. “Smokin’ Joe” spoke after the film ended, and was still livid over the insults that Ali hurled at him back in the day. When I brought up that Ali had always maintained that

The ball features Storm's GI-15 hybrid reactive coverstock, as well as its proprietary RAD-X asymmetric core. I watched a bowler roll the Snap Lock and was impressed by how it could be both hooked (and it really does) and thrown straight (shockingly so) depending on the bowler's needs or styles. Our prediction: The Snap Lock will be as big a hit in local centers that the IQ Tour Pearl was four years back. Learn more at stormbowling.com.

This event has become the gold standard of professional sports team community outreach.

NHL executives can’t be happy about the fact that The Tony Awards on CBS earned higher ratings than Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, which aired on NBC at the same time. Sure, the Hamilton juggernaut had something to do with increased viewership, but it’s a stark reminder to NHL team PR officials (hello, Islanders) that they should be more welcoming to the media. Hockey is still a niché sport. Former NFL running back Willis McGahee is a cast members on E!’s new relationship show, “Famously Single,” airing Tuesdays at 10 pm. When I mentioned to him at a press event for the show that he upset a lot of New York Jets fans by having some of his best games in his career the Jets, he smiled and proclaimed: “I always loved playing against them!” New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony and Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant will battle at the box office this summer. Carmelo has a role in the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film,
while Kobe has a cameo in the Ghostbusters reboot. The Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau was present in Manhattan earlier this month to promote its beaches, wineries, and other tourist attractions to the press. As part of the presentation, the LICVB showed images of great athletes who grew up in Long Island, including basketball legend Julius Erving and New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz. Long Island is glorious in the summer, but if you can handle the intense dry heat of California’s Palm Springs area, The La Quinta Resort & Golf Club (a Waldorf-Astoria resort) has bargain rates. I would advise hitting the links as early in the morning as possible.
Carmello Anthony

HEADLINERS
Make Your Plans Now For These Huge Events
Los Lonely Boys The Space At Westbury June 30 at 8 PM thespaceatwestbury.com (800) 745-3000 Blues/rock stars Los Lonely Boys – Ringo, Henry, and Jojo Garza – and the performers of perhaps the last great summer song (“Heaven”) return to the area for what's sure to be a rocking night that's unlike any other three-man band – they're not a power trio, and they're not a “bluz” band. Instead, The Brothers Garza have created their own original sound since forming in 1996, and it works: They’re always on the road.
Almost Queen NYCB Theatre At Westbury July 9 at 8 PM thetheatreatwestbury.com (516) 334-0800 The tonic for a summer Saturday night: The sounds of Freddie Mercury and company as recreated by quite possibly the most successful tribute band to hail from this region. Almost Queen features Joseph Russo as Mercury, Steve Leonard as Brian May, John Cappadona as Roger Taylor, and Randy Gregg as John Deacon.

The Paramount, Huntington July 9 at 8 PM paramountny.com (631) 673-7300 As usual, a “Founder's Room Afterparty” applies for this show featuring the legendary New Jersey-based big band. Times and trends come and go, but “Southside” Johnny Lyon and his band keep going strong. Electric Avenue Profile....PMA Studios
When Paul Andrejack was performing in Long Island bands like Rubicon and True, he had no idea that one day he would own his own critically acclaimed recording studio, PMA Studios in Medford. Paul is a true veteran of the Island scene, and because of his contacts and skills, he has worked with many bands, both national and local, including the Suffolk Horns, members of That 70’s Band, Drive She Said and many more. He has also co-written and worked with Grammy award winners including Mark Mangold(Cher). And he converted the tapes to digital for WBAB’s Fingers Metal Shop. The comfortable studio is anchored with a great console... Tascam DM3200, plus vintage Yamahas and NSM Studio monitors. But it is Paul and his ear which have garnered him a great
following. Paul does the engineering and mastering at the studio, which gives it a quality touch. And when he’s not working at the studio, he is working on his own projects... His 3rd cd for his band Andrejack has charted in France, where the band has a huge following. Perhaps that’s why the band plays Paris every year for a ten day stint. Paul defines detail, yet he says that a full length album can be put together in about 85-90 hours. The bands that record at PMA Studios run the gamut from cover bands to jazz, latin and Christian bands, with just about everything in between. In addition to working with Grammy winners and local heroes, Paul also wrote some music for the Bobby Flay show on Food Network. You can see the magic in person. PMA Studios is located at 9 Amsterdam Ave, Medford. Paul can be reached at 631-875-1380 to discuss projects or for a tour of the studio. They can be emailed at pmastudios@hotmail.com
PERFORMANCE Santana
Santana /Journey Madison Square Garden New York City
Reviews & photos by Christopher Jon Smaragdas
Good old-fashioned rock filled the as Garden as Santana – featuring its orginal Woodstockera lineup of guitarist Carlos Santana, drummer Michael Shrieve, singer and keyboardist Gregg Rolie, and percussionist Michael Carabello, and eventual Journey guitarist Neil Schon – joined 80s icons Journey for a double bill. Opening with “Soul Sacrifice” (as a film of the band’s Woodstock performance was shown on big screens), Carlos Santana shredded as if it was still 1969; his musicianship was nothing short of incredible. Perfomances such as this prove why he’s considered one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. Flying through classic hits as well as Journey songs from their new album, the band ended its set with “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va,” bringing many in the audience to their feet. Shockingly, this event marked Journey’s first-ever MSG performance. Lead singer Arnel Pineda, the band’s latest Steve Perry replacement, sounded clear and strong. His voice soared across the venue, while Schon delivered soulfully energetic performances on “Faithfully” and “Separate Ways.” This tour also marked the first appearances by original drummer Steve Smith, back with the band for the first time since 1984. Ending the night with “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Any You Want It,” yet another standing ovation ended a night packed with hits and memories.

‘Death To Disco’: 40 Years Of Rocking The Boat
It has been 40 years since the birth of the “Death To Disco” button and bumper sticker. The phrase was inspired by John Holmstrom’s editorial “Death To Disco Shit” in Punk Magazine #1; the button and bumper sticker led to the eventual cult hit “Death To Disco: Disco Sucks” by Jimi LaLumia & The Psychotic Frogs on Death Records, James Nipo Antonnuci’s Ronkonkoma-based indie label. Erin McAndrew A Dynamic New Voice From Queens
Who: Erin McAndrew is an emerging singer/songwriter who has moved to Queens after graduating from Hofstra University. Her new original album, Skeleton Of Life, was released on June 3; the album was produced by Long Island-based musician Dan Nelson. The Artist & Her Sound: From her bio: “Singer/Songwriter Erin McAndrew has excited crowds at concert halls, wineries, pubs, charity events, and private parties in the Northeastern United States. “Originally from Pennsylvania, Erin decided to take a leap to a different ‘venue’ to pursue her musical ambitions in New York City. While attending Hofstra University, Erin was the lead singer of the Long Island-based rock band Tiny Giant, which played the legendary CBGB and other local venues. In this project, she was able to immerse herself in writing, recording, and performing original music, which received regular airplay on Hofstra’s WRHU radio station. In 2015, Erin performed over two dozen solo performances in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania at various venues. Erin will be supporting Skeleton Of Life with a number of performances in the late summer and fall. “Erin recorded her debut album in early 2016 alongside producer and fellow singer/songwriter Dan Nelson. Erin says Skeleton Of Life is an album of ‘true growth’: ‘In the past few years, I have really found myself as an artist,’ said McAndrew. “I’ve found my sound, I’ve found my voice, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.” “The first single from Skeleton Of Life, “Turn The Page,” is available as a free download from erinmcmusic.com/free. The upbeat song celebrates Erin’s new phase in her career as a musician: ‘I wrote this at a time when I reached a turning point in my life when I knew I needed to make a 180º career change. I hope it inspires people to always live in the moment and to not be afraid to take risks and go for your goals,’ she said. Stairway To Litiagtion: The courtroom drama involving the Led Zeppelin classic "Stairway To Heaven" and a song called "Taurus" by the 1960s band Spirit is now over, it seems. My favorite Spirit song was "I've Got A Line On You"; they were a great band n FM album rock radio
long as you credit the songwriters and the publisher of the tune when you release the recording and pay royalties where due. The problems start when the structure of a song too closely resembles an existing song. When Berry Gordy Jr., the head of Motown, heard a record called "Mashed Potato Time" by Dee Dee Sharp, it struck him as sounding too much like "Postman" musically – so Gordy took the song to court and won, essentially taking control of the Sharp recording. Not long after came a novelty hit

Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia
back then, and the critics loved them. They also were a high-profile touring band, and as a result they wound up doing at least one show on the same bill with a new, up and coming Led Zeppelin. The trustee for Spirit guitarist Randy “California” Wolfe, Michael Skidmore, claimrf that part of the "Taurus" tune was used as a baseline to create "Stairway," one of the most popular recordings in rock history. Zep's Jimmy Page reportedly has claimed he never heard the song, even though he admitted to having Spirit albums in his private, giant record collection. In the end a jury sided with Zep, bringing the matter to a controversial close. There is a long history of these sort of scuffles in the music business; the most recent high-profile battle was "Blurred Lines” versus Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up," which got months of headlines and big publicity for the Gaye classic that was released by Motown Records in the ’70s. The first national #1 pop record for Motown was the classic "Please Mr. Postman," released on the
Adele Motown subsidiary label Tamla and recorded by The Marvelettes. "Postman" was heard and played everywhere; it took the world by storm, so much so that a then-new up-and-coming British band calle The Beatles recorded a cover version of the song, and as a result rock fans now think of "Postman" as a Beatles song. There is no problem with that; covering a song is perfectly legal, as
Spirit called "The Monster Mash," which sounded musically like a "mash" of Sharp's "Potatoes," and thereby derivative of the original source material by The Marvelettes; yes, these things can get sticky. Another Motown story: In 1964, when The Supremes became as big as The Beatles on the singles chart, their second (of 12) #1 single, "Baby Love," featured a popular tune on the flip side of the record. The song, "Ask Any Girl," was getting as much jukebox play as some of the biggest records of that time; not long afterward, a catchy tune called "1, 2, 3" by former Dovells lead singer Len Barry was released and went right to #1 on the Billboard chart. As you might imagine, Gordy heard a similar musical structure, sued, and reportedly got a settlement for 15 percent of the writers’ and publishers’ share. Adele’s Perfect Response: Tony Visconti, who produced great records by T.Rex and David Bowie in the 1970s, reportedly slammed Adele, insinuating that her vocals might be tampered with, auto tuned, that her music now sounds too perfect and that there's no surprises. I agree with him to an extent – but Adele, who needs no help with her powerful voice, took it the wrong way, and said during a concert that Visconti should "suck my d**k.” Nicely done, Adele!
