There might be a reason for that; even a cursory glance reveals that One America is so rightleaning it makes Fox News look like MSNBC, and comes across as a blatant imitation … Any way the wind blows: Just a few months after leaving his father's former Playboy empire and blasting Playboy Magazine's new nonudity policy, Hugh Hefner’s son Cooper Hefner, 24, is back with the company as its chief creative officer. In an editorial on his website, hop.com, Cooper wrote: “New leadership has stepped in and a team with a vision has been put in place. I’m excited to announce that Hop will be moved under Playboy and will become one of the company’s sub-brands. I’ll be stepping in as Playboy’s Chief Creative Officer and will participate in delivering a new Playboy, a Playboy understood by Millennials, like me. This chapter in the company’s history will be thrilling, challenging, but so rewarding and I am incredibly grateful to be a part of the team that re-introduces a brand that remains such a substantial part of my family’s legacy.” At press time, it's not known if Cooper Hefner will jettison the anti-nudity policy of the newly revamped Playboy, which thus far has been pretty much met with a collective yawn from both critics and newsstand operators (the debut “covered” issue from earlier this year is pictured here) ... Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is reportedly working with USA – ironically, the network of WWE – to develop a new 1980s-themed show.

cable television network; the occurrence was in light of a July 6 sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former “Fox & Friends” anchor Gretchen Carlson. Veteran news gatherers and professionals seem to agree: Ailes' reign heading Fox News incorporated a host of things that didn’t touch even the hem of journalism in the least (openly being in bed with the Republican party the most obvious infraction, of course). Especially in its formative years, Fox News employed female news readers that, by any standard, seemed to be hired mainly because of how attractive they appeared on
Dwayne Johnson camera; the tactic actually led to lists of “Hottest Fox News Anchors” popping up on “laddie boy”' websites all over the Internet. Female professionals in any field have the right to dress and conduct themselves any way they choose – but in the ratingshungry world of television, what seems obvious usually is what's really going on: The “values” network touted one thing, then acted differently behind the scenes. The only thing shocking about the Ailes saga was that it wasn’t shocking in the least. It’s the latest wilted feather in the cap of a company that’s unabashedly put ratings ahead of standards, and that new way of doing things has spread to virturally every other cable news network. There was a veteran TV reporter in upstate New York who insisted: “The news business shouldn't heal, it shouldn't help, and it shouldn't hinder – it should only report what’s going on.”

Apple On The Fringe: Tickets are now on sale for all shows of The New York Fringe Festival, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary from August 12 through August 28. This year, the Festival presents fully staged productions by nearly 200 emerging theatre troupes and dance companies. With annual attendance topping 75,000 fans, FringeNYC is New York City’s fifth largest event (just behind The New York International Auto Show, Tribeca Film Festival, The New York City Diva Marathon, and The New York Comic Con). In this rare instance, that's a very good thing. Audiences apparently agreed, as this film blasted off into the box office cosmos from the moment it was released, making it number one with a phaser blast, as it were. This new effort, the third recreation of the

original Star Trek franchise in the past seven years, delivers more of the same old, same old – but, in this case, it's all like a visit from old friends who you still enjoy hanging out with. The performances are beyond engaging – so much so that it's easy to forget that these

he end of an era is upon us: Black Sabbath is ending the epic musical journey it began nearly five decades ago with a 2016 world tour that will stop locally on Wednesday, August 17 at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh on the final North American leg of its “The End” tour. Joining them will be Long Beach, California rock quartet Rival Sons as the opener. Tickets for the entire tour are currently on sale at LiveNation.com and ticketmaster.com – but make plans fast, as world of Sabbath’s final trek are resulting in sold out shows across the United States. The massive 2016 world tour by the fathers of heavy metal marks the actual end for Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, and Geezer Butler, as they close the final chapter in the final volume of the incredible Black Sabbath story with this tour. The group’s “The End” farewell tour already performed in North America this winter – as well as Australia and New Zealand – to rave reviews, and is currently on tour in Europe for a mix of summer headlining and festival performances. versions of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine, now a major new star), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Scotty (Simon Pegg, who also among the screenwriters), Chekov (Anton Yelchin, who unfortunately and sadly died in the weeks before the film's release), Bones (Karl Urban), and Sulu (John Cho) aren't really William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, DeForest Kelley, and the rest of the original cast. The young actors are all so strong that they are forging indelible new identities of the characters, all through the power of fine acting and even better scripts and plots. It would be too revealing to give away much of the story here; suffice it to say there are new worlds discovered, and new characters to grow to love. It's really comforting
that in this 50th anniversary year of the orginal “Star Trek” TV series, this new film pays them worthy homage by doing it all exactly right. way – and yes, you can probably go back to the Iron Curtain era when many Eastern European female athletes looked like men, and it had nothing to do with sexual identity issues. Back then, few knew the side effects of drugs that purported to make you stronger. There was some buzz before the 2016 Olympics that The International Olympic Committee was thinking of banning Vladimir Putin’s best athletes from competing in Rio. As Dana Carvey used to say in his spot-on impression of President George H.W. Bush, “Uh-uh, that wasn’t gonna happen!” First of all, many large corporate sponsors of the Olympics such as Coca-Cola do business with Russia, and they do

The previous tournament may have been the single most challenging event of LIBGT's eight seasons, but it didn't prevent Hector Diaz Jr., 37, of Bronx, NY from winning his second LIGBT title and $1,000 on July 17 at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. It’s always tough to watch baseball greats in the twilights of their careers. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, in the last year of his contract, has been riding the bench for most of the year. It would be nice if the Mets would pay tribute to Enberg this weekend when Juan the Padres make their Lagares annual visit to Citi Field. New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares has had a nice bounce-back season, yet he's struggled to find playing time in the Mets crowded outfield. That status should change given that Yoenis Cespedes’s quad injury is limiting his mobility, relegating him to left field. The Mets should use Michael Conforto and the so-far disappointing Alejandro de Aza to spell Cespedes and Curtis Granderson as the season heads towards the stretch. Not all Major League Baseball players are financially secure from the moment they put on the uniform. The problem with Simmons is that he is trying to be the 21st Century version of Dick Schaap. I read Dick Schaap; I watched Dick Schaap; I knew Dick Schaap – Bill, you’re no Dick Schaap. I was saddened when I lost a good friend from the press box last month, as longtime Bronx News, NY Sports Day, and Latino Sports writer Howard Goldin died. He was a fine writer, but more importantly, he was a gentleman and a great friend. Howard will be missed.

As we put this edition of “Studio News” to paper, it was hot, hot, HOT – but not as broiling as area studios and rehearsal facilities. In previous issues, we detailed one of the highest profile recording sessions in the region during the past few months: The Rascals’ (and Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee) Gene Cornish recorded at Sabella Studios in Roslyn Heights. As a token of his esteem, Cornish gifted Jim Sabella and the crew at the studio a unique 60s-themed clock. The Sabella crew proudly posted a photo of his rock rarity on Instagram, and more of it can be viewed via the sabellastudios.com website. wo of rock’s most unique veteran bands, both true road warriors – Rusted Root and Toad The Wet Sprocket – will join forces for a highly anticipated double bill on Saturday, August 20 at The Paramount in Huntington. Oogee Wawa: New Singles All Summer
The summer is getting quite hot – and area favorites Oogee Wawa are “trying to help you keep cool,” according to a press release, by releasing a new single each month during the 2016 summer season. The band's new single, “Palm Trees,” is the release for July; from its title, you can tell is the type of song that's made for summer fun. Oogee is also on the road throughout the coming weeks – their next area appearances will be August 4 at BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue, and August 5 at Driftwood in Long Beach. “Our idea is to go to the smallest clubs we can go to,” Taking Back Sunday vocalist Adam Lazzara told Entertainment Weekly about their upcoming follow-up tour in support of their new album Tidal Wave, to be released on September 16. After performing early in the summer co-headlining with Dashboard Confessional, Long Island's TBS will next perform in more intimate rooms. The tour will bring them “home” with shows on September 29 at Irving Plaza, followed by October 4 at Revolution in Amityville. Taking Back Sunday remains Lazzara (vocals), John Nolan (guitars, vocals), Eddie Reyes (guitars), Shaun Cooper (bass), and Mark O’Connell (drums). Has Some ‘Unfinished Business’
Who: The veteran Long Island-based heavy rock group Stryctynyne is back, this time with a new album entitled Unfinished Business. For this new release, the four-member band – dummer and vocalist Mike Sabatino (also known as Thunder Kyxx, as the band members have given themselves nicknames), bassist and vocalist Vincent Carollo (Samson James), lead singer John Scacco (also known as Johnny Scac's), and guitarist Mike Paris (G. Cyco) – enlisted some of the area's top music professionals to work on the songs: The album was produced by BlokHed Studio's Tom Stiegler, Kenny Wallace, and the band. The album was recorded and mixed at BlokHed Studios and another local studio of note, Ian London Studios. This new effort follows up Stryctnyne's last album, Anthology, a re-release of the band's popular earlier works. The Artists & Their Sound: From their official bio: “After the Anthology CD release with an independent label from California, the band has been performing, writing songs, and recording. Stryctnyne has recently opened for and supported national acts such as Adrenaline Mob, Jake E.
