Cher Lloyd:
Totally ‘Activated’
British-born, internationally rising pop songstress Cher Lloyd is taking back the charts with the release of her new song, “Activated.” “I’m charged up. I’m getting activated,” the 22-year-old proclaims in the opening lines of her latest release. Having taken time out of the spotlight (since the release of her hit single “Really Don’t Care” with Demi Lovato in 2014), Lloyd has been working in the studio, writing, and recording new material in Los Angeles; she’s now ready to show the world what she’s made of. “I’ve waited two years to have creative control of my own career and finally do things my way," said Lloyd. "Returning with new music and releasing 'Activated' is such a huge deal for me. I’ve been working hard on new music and I cannot wait to reveal more to you all! ... Now I’m ready to roll my sleeves up and show you all what I’m really made of, and to all of you who have stood by me since the start of my career, I promise
After topping the rock charts in 2014 and 2015, The Pretty Reckless returns with their third album, Who You Selling For, on October 21 on Razor & Tie. The new album is produced by longtime collaborator Kato Khandwala, with songs written by front woman Taylor Momsen and guitarist Ben Phillips.

Katy Perry:
She’s Got ‘Love’ For You
It's her world, we only live in it: Coty recently introduced Katy Perry's Mad Love, the newest fragrance from Katy Perry Parfums. Of course, Perry used a new method to get the word out: Kik, where users can now exchange their “Kik Points” for a bottle of Katy Perry's Mad Love, delivered directly to their homes. Kik Points is a rewards program where users can earn points by completing activities on Kik, such as watching a video or downloading a sticker pack. Users can redeem points for goods like smileys, and in this case, Katy Perry's Mad Love eau de parfum. This marks the first time that consumers can redeem rewards program points for a physical product in a U.S. chat app. Kik has more than 300 million registered users and is extremely popular with U.S. teens. It’s always nice to be around people that understand you and know you well – like when you go home to your parents and the family you feel comfortable because you know that your parents really know everything about you. The New York Mets haven’t looked like a playoff team much of this season, but thanks to the advent of the second wild card, it’s impossible to write them off. It is true, however: The Mets’ penchant to roll over and play dead for both the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks has been a key reason why finishing above .500 may be the most realistic goal for 2016. Another reason for the Mets’ floundering was manager Terry Collins’ decision to stick with Logan Verrett – who hadn’t won a game since April 26 – as a starting pitcher. Verrett lacks velocity and relies on location and pitch deception to get hitters out. That works for a few innings, but many hitters got wise to him the second time they faced him; it wasn’t surprising that Verrett would invariably get beaten like a pinata no later than the fifth inning. I got to play my ‘A’ game and it was good.” Haugen tripped a couple of highpocket shots, but note, “You need to catch a few breaks out here to win and today I was lucky enough to get them. I really wanted to win again.” Haugen, who turns 50 in December (pictured right), noted his fifth win means he’s halfway to PBA Hall of Fame eligibity, but he hasn’t given up hope: “Number five

in the upcoming game. On this night however, Verrett was facing the equally mediocre Paul Clemens, and Higgins couldn’t help but take a jab: After announcing the starters, Higgins cracked, “Hey, that’s all I got,” making it clear that this wasn’t the modern day equivalent of Sandy Koufax versus Juan Marichal. The

is halfway. It’s a long way to go when you’re almost 50, but you never know,” he said. “Maybe someday I’ll make it to the ‘hall.’ That’s what drives me.” TV news: The PBA Tour’s Fall King Of The Swing will be available for viewing both online and on the CBS Sports Network. The multi-event competition will award four PBA Tour titles (Wolf, Bear, Badger and Detroit Open titles) along with a Fall King of the Swing special event. All preliminary rounds will be video-streamed live, exclusively on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel, and all five stepladder finals will air on CBS Sports Network on consecutive Wednesdays at 9 pm beginning September 21. To subscribe to Xtra Frame, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link. Bowling Tip Of The Week: Now that league season has begun, here’s the first in a new series of helpful tips designed to keep you rolling strong: Yes, that’s the most boring photo we’ve ever printed, but we’re making a point: Clean your bowling ball at the end of each night of play; use a USBC-approved cleaner – and use a clean towel every time. Modern reactive balls have porous coverstocks – so if you use that filthy yellow towel you’ve had in your bag since 1989, you’re wiping dirt and oil into your ball, and your reaction will definitely suffer for it.
Padres’ broadcast team also saluted the Mets for hosting their inaugural LGBT night. Higgins made an interesting point about the intrusive Kiss-Cam: “This was the first time that samesex couples were seen smooching on it, and
Walt Frazier
the crowd cheered.” Since the Mets traded Dilson Herrera, the top second baseman in their farm system, to the Cincinnati Reds in order to obtain Jay Bruce, GM Sandy Alderson might have pondered getting a long-term deal done with
Neil Walker, terrific both on the field and as a leader in the clubhouse – but Walker being shut down following back surgery in early September sent the Mets’ possible plan awry. The Brooklyn Cyclones’ home field, MCU Park, will be the site of a qualifying round for entry into The World Baseball Classic on September 22 through 25, featuring Great Britain, Brazil, Pakistan, and Israel. The Israeli team will feature some Americanborn Jewish players, including ex-Met Josh Satin, who recently announced his pending retirement. Something new in pro basketball: The Champions League, which will play from July through September starting in 2017 and will be comprised of former NBA players who have been out of the league no more than five years. The New York franchise will be The Gotham Ballers; the head coach will be former Knicks forward John Wallace, and the team president is Walt Frazier. Among the familiar names on the team will be Eddy Curry, Kenyon Martin, Al Harrington, Terrence Williams, Josh Childress, and Tyshaun Taylor. Harrington told me that he is not attempting to get back into the NBA, unlike some players who will be participating: “I miss the camaraderie of the locker room and playing in front of fans. This is also a great way to stay in shape.” The New York Empire of World Team Tennis finished with a record of 2-6 in spite of having Andy Roddick for a couple of matches.

Roddick grew testy when asked about the state of American tennis, and whether Sam Querrey’s win over Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon was a fluke: “If you compare tennis with baseball, the state of our farm system is the best that I have seen in 15 years.” Hopefully, Merrick’s Noah Rubin is part of the farm system he’s referring to. LeBron James is producing a TV show, “Cleveland Hustles,” for CNBC, in which he and his investors invest in retail stores that he considers promising based on their on-camera presentations.

Behold – The Mirman: The Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival is “the world’s first sincere and ironic comedy event that celebrates a close knit comedy community while making fun of the trappings of mainstream comedy festival,” according to its organizers. Now in its ninth year, the increasingly popular annual event returns with another lineup of shows from Thursday, September 15 through Saturday, September 17. The 2016 festival kicks off with StarTalk Live! at The Beacon Theatre in New York City, and continues with comedy the next two nights at The Bell House and Union Hall, both in Brooklyn. This year’s fest features namesake, curator, and comedy host Eugene Mirman, plus an all-star cast of guests including Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jon Glaser, Chris Duffy, Aparna Nancherla, Ophira Eisenberg, Eliot Glazer, Ilana Glazer, Josh Gondelman, Hari Kondabolu, Jo Firestone, Marina Franklin, “Saturay Night Live's” Sasheer Zamata, Kevin Barnett, Maeve Higgins, and more comedians to be announced, plus musicians and surprise guests. In addition to the comedy onstage, offstage you may also find a bouncy castle with a therapist inside, a roaming CPA dressed like a Eugene clown giving tax advice, or a Mirman station where you can throw a water balloon at a slam poet. Tickets for all shows are on sale now at eugenemirmancomedyfeastival.com. If history repeats itself, these shows will sell out, most in advance, so don’t miss your opportunity to attend. LI’s Pizza Pal Makes NBC’s ‘Talent’ Finals By this point, everyone knows it: Young singer Sal Valentinetti of Bethpage had already captured Long Island by storm, and now he's been doing the same thing to the rest of the country on NBC's “America's Got Talent.” The smooth-voiced jazz crooner, who offers old school takes on modern songs on the show, has had hundreds of fans assembling at area restaurants and pizzerias each week – he delivered pizzas for Da Angelo Pizzeria in Albertson, among other odd jobs – who cheer on and cast votes for the singer as
“America's Got Talent” airs live. As of press time, Valentinetti had just made the finals for this season; the champion will be crowned this week. Valentinetti's showstopper on the program was his jazz-inflected version of One Direction’s “Story Of My Life,” sung in full-on Frank Sinatra style accompanied by a full orchestra. He's been a favorite of judge and supermodel Heidi Klum thus far; whether he wins this year's championship or not, he's a sure bet for big things on national stages in the future.

Blues & Roots Master Visits Garden Stage Scott Ainslie, a noted musician who has received every bit as much acclaim as a blues music historian (and even as a guitar instructor), headlines on September 9 at 8:30 pm (preceded by an open mic at 7:30 pm) at The Garden Stage at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Garden City. More info: (516) 248-8855, or log on to gardenstage.com. Few artists Scott are as wellAinslie versed in blues traditions as this veteran performer. Armed with a variety of instruments – vintage guitars, a fretless gourd banjo, a onestring, homemade diddley bow (aka cigar box guitar), and carefully chosen historical personal anecdotes of his encounters with senior musicians across the South – Ainslie brings the history, roots music, and the sounds of America to this area stage. Tickets for this special engagement with this unique performer are $20 in advance, or $22 at the door. To reserve: reservations@gardenstage.com.

Long Island artists Gimme Some Skin and The Singing Websters will join Vanilla Fudge lead guitarist and U.S. Vince Navy veteran Vince Martell at a benefit Martell concert for The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF), a not-for profit organization supporting the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, on Saturday, September 10 at K. J. Ferrell’s Bar & Grill in Bellmore. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the door. Doors are at 5 pm. One hundred percent of donations to the IFHF will go directly towards building Intrepid Spirit centers, facilities that diagnose and treat TBI and psychological health conditions in U.S. service members. Each center costs approximately $11 million to construct and equip with the latest in brain technology and treatment facilities. Intrepid Spirit centers are funded and built by the IFHF through a $100 million fundraising campaign. Though the centers are being built exclusively through private donations, each center is gifted to the Department of Defense for operation and management upon completion. An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists
Sabrina Salice
She’s Definitely ‘All In’
Who: Sabrina Salice, a young singer and performer with ties to the Long Island area, has been making news across the music world with her new single and video for “I’m All In,” now drawing thousands of hits on YouTube and other music video platforms. Salice, who has resided in Long Island, seem en route to pop stardom given the caliber of music professionals that are working with her. The Artist & Her Sound: From her official bio: “Sabrina is an emerging artist who at just 19 years old has powerhouse vocals dripping with soul and emotion. If you've been waiting for an Adele and Avicii collaboration, Sabrina's first single, 'I'm All In,' is for you. Her lustrous voice, backed by an energetic and addictive dance music-inspired track, is sure to be this summer’s theme song. “A classically trained mezzo-soprano influenced by early pop and the grittiness of classic rock, Sabrina has taken full control of her voice to create her unique sound. A showwoman at heart and a truly dynamic performer, you're guaranteed a musical sucker punch to the gut if you're able to catch this 5'3" firecracker on stage. “When asked what drove Sabrina to drop everything and move to New York to pursue music, she talks about her love of performing that comes second only to her desire to be a positive role model. Aiming for charm over sex appeal and honesty over an artist persona, Sabrina is the gorgeous, down-to-earth girl we all want to just hang out with. She paved her way onto the music scene starting with nothing but Internet research to guide her. Now, working with Joe Vulpis (of AP Music Group, who has worked with Lady Gaga), Sabrina is on her way to becoming a pop sensation. “With her first EP just completed, Sabrina has more songs on the way showing off her ridiculous range and huge sound. Her 'no holds barred' attitude is taking her on the road whenever she's not in the studio. Performing at small venues to get up and close and personal with fans, Sabrina is bringing a new level of intimacy to the pop music genre.” To Learn More About The Artist: Log on to sabrinasalice.com; find her at Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
