bassist Timothy B. Schmit returns with a new solo project, Leap Of Faith, out on September 23 from Benowen Records. Recorded at his Los Angeles studio and co-produced with engineer Hank Linderman, the new album is a mix of rock, country, Americana, R&B, and a bit of reggae. On the new album, Schmit goes further up the path he began to explore on his 2009 solo album, Expando: "Again, I wanted to write this album on my own," he said. "In any collaboration one has to make a series of compromises. That's not a bad thing, it's simply not what I've chosen to do with this project. I'm just putting it out there, and maybe some of these ideas might resonate with listeners." Schmit later noted: "Over the last 10 years or so, I've felt like I'm finally getting the hang what it is I do best. Although this project took some time to complete, this is what I came up with ... Nesmith is being recognized for a career that spans more than 50 years, including acting, producing, songwriting, and his breakout role with The Monkees band that spawned the popular 1960s TV show. FILM The Magnificent Seven
Hollywood's way of saying: “We're out of ideas, here's something old that's new so that hopefully parents will bring their kids … and don't forget to pick up a couple of $12 poporn and soda specials at the snack bar on the way to your cushy new rocker/recliner chairs.” Cynical, ain't we? The transparently calculated way this film has been assembled, produced, and marketed only makes us bring on the snark. Denzel Washington is the focal point this time out, who is much unlike Yul Brynner, the star of the 1960 western hit that was such a success that it often was rereleased throughout the decade (Trivia: The original Magnificent Seven film was actually a … uh … remake? Adapation? Well, it was from the 1954 Japanese hit Seven Samurai ... see?
This is actually a remake of a remake). Also cast in a lead role is Chris Pratt, whose appearances in comic book films make him prime Teen Choice Awards fodder. Add a multi-ethic cast that hardly resembles the square-jawed original “Seven” (which also included James Coburn, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and Robert Vaughn), and it becomes surprising that there isn't a scene of these newfangled cowboys shooting at Budweiser bottles for target practice (since this is a preview, we reserve the right to say “I told you so” if our snide quip turns to stone fact). Also adding to our doubts is that Sony began advertising this new version on television during mid-summer, and it all adds
Starring Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart Directed by Clint Eastwood Warner Bros. The saga is well known: US Airways Captain Chesley Sullenberger was miraculously able to use the Hudson River as an emergency runway after his jet aircraft lost use of both of its engines on January 15, 2009. The man whose nickname was “Sully” was universally hailed as a hero all over the nation, and he was, and still is, lionized here in the New York metro area. Director Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Todd Komarnicki clearly realize this; in their new film, the emphasis is on a part of the story that didn’t get a lot of play in the media: The National Transportation Safety Board’s inquiry into what happened. While the public and media were hailing Sullenberger as a hero, the folks heading the NTSB investigation made it clear that it was possible that the veteran pilot had used poor judgment by not proceeding back to LaGuardia Airport in Queens. In addition, Sullenberger might have acted

recklessly by turning the jet into a hydroplane in harsh winter conditions. In the early moments of the film, Captain Sullenberger (Hanks) worries if his judgment under life-and-death pressure may have been faulty. He has nightmares of Flight 1459
up to big questions: Can this be nearly as entertaining as the original classic? Will teenagers flock to mallplexes to see a western after a summer full of Captain America, Suicide Squad, and The Secret Life Of Pets? And, perhaps most important: Who the heck cast Vincent D'Onofrio, last seen chewing up the scenery like a rabid tasmanian devil in one of the “Law & Order” series, in an action film? It certainly seems there will be no gray area concerning this 2016 edition of The Magnificent Seven: It will either be a new-age cowboy classic, or one of the biggest stink bombs since – wait for it – another remake, Ben-Hur, just a few weeks ago. damaged jet, but rather in his insistence of making sure that each one of the 155 people on board were accounted for and safe. As a director, Eastwood has proven to be a master of choosing the right actors for supporting roles, and for getting the little details right. Jamey Sheridan, Michael O’Malley, and Anna Gunn are superb as the triumvirate running the NTSB inquiry. The film nicely shies away from painting them as cartoon villains, and depicts them as no-nonsense pros whose thankless job is to discover the truth about what could have and should have been done. It’s not giving much away to say that they develop an appreciation of Sullenberger by the end of the film. Veteran New York character actor Michael Rapaport provides necessary comic relief as a bartender who becomes ecstatic when “Sully” wanders into his watering hole. Sully isn’t flawless. Talented Laura Linney has little to do here as Sullenberger’s wife except express worry. The fateful 208 seconds of Flight 1459 is showed numerous times in a teasing manner; it’s draining by the time it is shown in its entirety. Unlike countless other air disaster movies and TV shows, the screaming is fairly minimal. Overall, Sully is a worthwhile experience – and at a taut 96 minutes, you won’t need to look at your watch for your own escape.

winding up similar to the air planes that crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11, as well as the media and public turning their adulation into vitriol if the NTSB were to issue a less than laudatory report. Happily for “Sully,” his first officer, the cheerful Jeff Skiles (Eckhart), never wavers in his support of Sullenberger’s decision making, and is not shy about letting the NTSB know it. Hanks’ portrayal of Sullenberger is similar to the title character he played in Captain Phillips; once again, Hanks’ protagonist is a quiet man of few words who isn’t looking for glory, and places the needs of others ahead of his own. This film explores the kind of man “Sully” is not so much by his heroics at landing the

The Mets will visit Citizens Bank Park for the final weekend of the regular season, and if they are theoretically playing for something, it could mean up to 15,000 extra fans per game for the Phillies, considering that Philadelphia is just 100 miles southwest of New York. The big story at the recently concluded U.S. Open was the debut of the retractable roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The first official implementation of the roof was not for tennis – but rather for Phil Collins, who preformed “In The Air Tonight” and “Easy Lover” at the opening night ceremonies. The sound quality was so good that it was natural to think that Ashe Stadium could easily compete with Barclays and MSG for concerts. Those great acoustics are actually troublesome in tennis, because many players kvetch about how they can’t judge the spin and velocity of the ball off their opponents’ racquet if they can’t hear it. Ryan Harrison, once considered to be the future face of American tennis before fading into obscurity, made a nice comeback this year
by making it to the third round at the Open. Harrison was also the MVP of World Team Tennis this year, and credits his season there for helping him improve his concentration: “The music, crowd noise, and other gimmicks that the WTT uses, like being able to substitute players, forced me to block out a lot of things that used to bother me.”

Citi Field Flushing Southern rock’s newest country boy superstar moseyed intro New York City for some summer rockin’ on his “Black Out The Sun” tour, with Drake White serving as his opener. Here's a difference from typical rock concerts: From the moments fans approached the venue, the strong aroma of … barbecue filled the air. Rows of RVs and women sporting shorts and mid-cut leather boots stood next to mountains of beer cans piled up in parking spots – indeed, the south had come to Queens. Famous for country tunes with a rock edge, Brown and his gang loaded their set not only with with hits, but also an array of obscure covers and a mix of soothing acoustic, songs followed by foot-stomping sing-alongs. The opener, “Homegrown,” was highlighted by Jimmy De Martini’s stellar fiddle playing. Another stunner was a cover of John Mellencamp's “Jack & Dianne,” where Brown welcomed White to return to the stage to join him on the mic. Slowing things down for a three-song acoustic interlude, Brown and the band returned from their intermission to perform the Frank Sinatra hit “The Way You Look Tonight.” Brown's voice remained crisp and strong throughout the show, as his band soulfully backed him up. Ending the evening with Van Morrison's “Into the Mystic” bleeding into “Chicken Fried,” the still-new stadium was alive with country fever. All Time Low A Day To Remember Barclays Center Brooklyn The recently reunited Blink-182 recently scored its second #1 album with California – its first in 15 years – giving the trio the reassurance that its fans were still behind it despite its membership change. It all resulted in this whopper of a triple-bill for the national tour that stopped at this lavish arena. Sensing a comeback, fans' anticipation was at an all-time high as All Time Low hit the stage, opening with “Lost In Stereo.” Their emo-like ballads and catchy pop riffs made it easy for the Maryland quartet to be considered peers with the headliners. Amazingly, when the metalcore group A Day To Remember took the stage, the energy level among the crown only seemed to rise further. The group never let up until it walked off of the stage to a burst of streamers, leaving the crowd on its feet for the main act. As the lights dimmed, a dark curtain fell covering the stage; off went fireworks; and the world “F***K” appeared and glowed in flames behind Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus, and Matt Skiba. Kicking it off with “I'm Feeling It,” the Barclays was at the mercy of the punky trio. Skiba dosn’t have the same delivery and tone as original member (and recently departed) Tom Delonge, but he got the job done. Hoppus’ voice sounded fresh, keeping his distinctive slaphappy style. Moving to “What’s My Age Again,” it was clear this band is as untarnished as ever, even with its altered lineup. Staying true to its punk-rock roots, the band soared through its classics, never stopping to take a breather. Blink walked off to a snippet of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and its first hit, “Dammit,” before the crowd roared to the exits and onto Atlantic Avenue. – Text and photos by Christopher Jon Smaragdas

As this issue goes to press, most area colleges and high schools are up and running once again. As students get serious after a summer of fun, two of the most successful rock bands in Long Island history – Bayside and Taking Back Sunday – are back with new sounds, tour plans, and some rather surprising news as these musicians with area roots continue to take the entire globe by storm. Bayside: The famous foursome – Anthony Raneri (vocals, guitar), Chris Guglielmo (drums), Nick Ghanbarian (bass), and Jack O'Shea (lead guitar) – are back with the followup album to their 2014 smash album Cult with a new disc and a new outlook.
TAKING BACK SUNDAY & BAYSIDE: LI’S Superstars Are Bigger (& Smaller) Than Ever In 2016
Vacancy, released on August 19 on the fast-rising Hopeless Records label, is an album that is as personal as it is rocking. “The hotel on the album cover reflects the feelings I had while working on Vacancy,” said Raneri, who has had a busy year with both his own solo work and with Bayside, in a recent press release. “Writing this album, I felt as if everything was uncertain, I could move back to New York, buy a house in Nashville … I just didn’t know what was going to come next. I felt very isolated and as if everything in my life was temporary at that moment.” According to the press release, the new
Confessional, Long Island's TBS will next perform in more intimate rooms. The tour will bring them “home” with shows on September 29 at Irving Plaza, followed by October 4 at Revolution in Amityville. Taking Back Sunday remains Lazzara (vocals), John Nolan (guitars, vocals), Eddie Reyes (guitars), Shaun Cooper (bass), and Mark O’Connell (drums). The upcoming album, the Taking band's seventh album and their Back first since 2014's Happiness Is..., Sunday picks ups where the previous album left off. “By the time most bands get to this point in their career they are pretty set in what they do, but we were really mindful about approaching our musical ideas differently this time around and staying true to where the five of us are in our lives right now,” Lazzara said. “This album is truly an expression of what Taking Back Sunday is during this snapshot in time as opposed to what we think people expect from our band.”

Who: The Steel Silk Band is a big, horn-driven group – but it's definitely not your grandfather's kind of band. MTV Mediorcrity: What an outcry there's been over the recent MTV Video Music Awards! We had heard MTV would refocus on music and not concentrate entirely on reality and scripted shows, as it has done for the past decade and a half. That

The result: The smallest viewing audience and worst ratings numbers in recent memory, as well as the worst reviews, across the board, that the show has received since it first appeared – back when Madonna was a new artist, and the hosts were Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd.
