Vinyl records first hit the music world in 1948, and almost faded away with the advent of digital downloads and CDs – but 68 years later, vinyl is the hottest thing in the recording industry once again. Today's record stores are keeping up with the trend by offering the music of today and yesterday in every format – including those stillbeloved 12” vinyl albums. Vinyl Bay 777 in Plainview (located at 101 Dupont Street #14; (516) 595-7210), owned by Frank Napoli, offers thousands of records for sale and is participating this year in Rhino
Vinyl Is King – Again: Your Guide To Area Record Stores Records' Rocktober, with new, exclusive limited edition vinyl albums for sale by rock's biggest artists available each Tuesday in October, with free drink coozies offered with purchases to boot. The store is a rock lover's mecca, with new albums in stock by Deep Purple, Twisted Sister, and Alice Cooper. Their best sellers currently are by The Good Rats and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. New releases in stock are California by Blink-182, The Getaway by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiss Rocks Vegas, and The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan. The new Metallica album, Hardwired … To Self-Destruct, will be available in November.

We have a large collection of rap and disco as well. We grade and clean our vinyl, and we make sure you are getting the proper records.” Looking for new and upcoming vinyl releases? Mr. Cheapo, located in Mineola (134 Jericho Turnpike) and Commack (in The Mayfair Shopping Center at 2020 Jericho Turnpike), offers new releases every week. Blink-182’s California, Gov't Mule's TelStar Sessions, and Any Way You Love, We Know How You Feel by The Chris Robinson Brotherhood all recently hit the shelves. Their best-selling records are from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Record Stop Pink Floyd, Radiohead and
The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Mr. Cheapo also buys and sell records, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray, video games, and new and used record players. This chain has been in business since 1980, originally owned by Stu Goldberg; the current owner and manager is his son, Josh Goldberg. “In the '90s, we didn’t sell new vinyl,” Josh Goldberg recalled. “We just started selling it the past five or six years because of Record Store Day – an event that takes place on Black Friday where limited edition exclusive record titles are distributed to independent record stores. It's when we started selling new records. We stock all genres from hip hop to jazz, reggae, rock, and blues.” For more info: (516) 742-7670. New releases at the store are Death Of The Cool and Kontiki by Cotton Mather, both from Austin, Texas' Apple Star Kingdom label; Tasty by The Good Rats, and Toogoodoo by Stop Light Observations. Hideaway Vinyl in Huntington is located inside Rosie’s Vintage Store (101 Woodbury Road; (516) 308-6416). Hideaway Vinyl schedules New Vinyl Tuesdays, which features hot new releases each week; a listening party is an attraction the last Saturday of each month. One of the owners mans a turntable or brings a DJ to the store, and sale records are offered for 10 percent off. Owned by Rob Harrigan and Norm Morales, Hideaway Vinyl isn’t your average record store. “We really focus on outsider music and niché like punk rock, hardcore, alternative, goth, and electro,” said Infinity Records
Harrigan. “We sell what we love and what we have collected over the years.” New releases available here are Jack White’s Acoustic Recordings by Third Man Records, The Frightnrs on Dap Tone Records, and, on October 28, the Stranger Things soundtrack will be available on clear vinyl; only 3,000 copies will be pressed. If you’re all about oldies and metaphysical books, Record Reserve in Kings Park (10 Main Street, (631) 7216250), owned by Tim Clair, is the place for you: “This is a good place to dig for a vast array of genres,” said Clair. Stocking primarily used records, you can find their “Wall of the Top 50 of All Time,” featuring record albums such as Back In Black by AC/DC, Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles, and Kinda Blue by Miles Davis. The Action Of Autumn
We have now reached that point on the movie calendar where all the summer blockbusters have been released – now come the films that will ease into the mallplexes before the big holiday releases are ready to take over box offices. This year, there are such a large number of traditional action films on the boards that it's hard to determine what to highlight. If you're into a lot of fistfights and explosions, this will be an autumn full of action: Skiptrace: Starring Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville (Saban Films, now leaving theaters): If you like laughs along with your kicks to the pills, you'll enjoy the past-their shelf dates Chan (still the
second-hightest grossing actor in the world, trailing only Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and Knoxville as they trade as many wisecracks as karate chops. This is akin to a dumbed-down version of Midnight Run, with about 100 extra action scenes thrown Skiptrace in. This film was an out-of-thebox hit China and has done well here.

Kickboxer – Vengeance: Starring Dave Bautista, Gina Carano, Jean-Claude Van Dam (Headmon Entertainment & Productions / RLJ Entertainment, now in limited release): Former WWE star Bautista shows he's an action star in Kickboxer – the making following his Vengeance Guardians Of The Galaxy breakthrough. This film is also now available on streaming services and DVD, as it was released on all formats on September 2. Transpecos: Starring Johnny Simmons, Clifton Collins Jr., Gabriel Luna (8750 Films / Marfa Peach Company, limited): This is the first film to
feature U.S. border patrol agents on the edge of Mexico as its centerpiece, perfect for the Donald Trump voting base. In all seriousness, this could be yet another “little film that could,” as those who have seen it at film festivals have been pleasantly surprised. This one has been awaiting release since its spooling at South By Southwest – where it won the grand jury prize and audience award, among other film festival honors – but it's clear that distributors have no idea what to do with it. Don't let that dissuade you from checking this one out, as it’s surely the best of this somewhat weak bunch. Before I Wake: Starring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Annabeth Gish (Relativity Media, now in theaters): A traditional horror/ mystery starring a cast that's yesterday's news with a release date nowhere near Halloween? The Buffalo Bills, a couple of weeks ago. The Bills, who have't been to the NFL postseason since 1999, have historically given even good Jets teams fits, particularly when the two teams play in Buffalo (even going back to the halcyon days of Joe Namath). It was the Bills who knocked the Jets out of the playoffs on the last Sunday of the 2015 NFL season when QB Ryan Fitzpatrick picked an inopportune time to have his worst game of the season. Of course, even in the recent victory, the Jets made their fans bite their fingernails: Leading 37-24 with less than two minutes remaining, the Jets defense thought that they Rex could start playing touch Ryan football, as it basically let Bills QB Tyrod Taylor and running back Mike Gillislee march down the field unfettered. Making matters worse, the Bills used little clock time in scoring a touchdown to cut the deficit to 37-31. Fortunately for the Jets, wide receiver

Retiring New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira told me that he haas had no second thoughts about hanging it up, as his neck pain has not improved. He said that he hadn’t spoken with New York Mets third baseman David Wright about his neck issues, but wasobviously monitoring Wright’s attempt to resume his playing career. I asked “Tex” why it was that we have never heard as much about neck injuries in baseball as we have this year: “Medical science and technology has become so advanced that things that were almost impossible to properly diagnose just a few years ago are very detectable now,” he said. Former New York Mets infielder Chris Woodward is in his first year as the Los Angeles Dodgers' third base coach, and admitted that it’s painful for him when a runner he waves home is thrown out at the plate: “You have to make a split-second decision as you try to factor in your runner’s speed and the outfielder’s arm and positioning.” Woodward noted that third base coaches frequently converse. I told him not to feel too badly when one of his guys gets nailed at the plate, because that's been happening to his Mets counterpart, Tim Teufel, seemingly twice a week this season. The Dodgers’ visit to the Bronx to play the Yankees marked the return of Malverne native Charley Steiner to Yankee Stadium. Steiner was
John Sterling’s radio partner before Suzyn Waldman. It had been rumored that Sterling and Steiner did not get along well and that was a reason that he decided to go west. When I broached Sterling about whether he would want to have Steiner join himin the booth for an inning for old time’s sake, he seemed happily intrigued by the notion. Steiner was a bit more reticent, however: “I’ve got to John work with Sterling Rick Monday,” he replied. There was debate among Mets fans and the media about whether Wally Backman, the manager of the Las Vegas 51s minor league affiliate, was fired by Mets GM Sandy Alderson or whether Backman quit on his own volition. My guess is that this was Backman’s call, and completely understandable. Alderson acknowledged that Backman had done a fine job in Vegas, and he probably could have stayed out in
sport he loved. The format for the tournament will be seven games of qualifying on Saturday, with the top 32 advancing to a best two-out-ofthree match play finals on Sunday. There will be two qualifying division – 55 and under, and 56 and over – giving all ages a chance at winning the event. There will be a one in four cashing ratio, with last place earning $250; all finalists are guaranteed a minimum of $300. This USBC-sanctioned event will feature a playable lane pattern in USBC White #2. The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis was started 30 years ago by former Dolphins linebacker and NFL Hall of Nick Buoniconti Famer Nick Buoniconti after his son, Marc, broke his spinal cord making a tackle as a Citadel linebacker. The Buoniconti Fund is a subsidiary of the Miami Project To Cure Paralysis, which held its 31st annual fundraising dinner at The Waldorf-Astoria, with NBC News anchor Lester Holt serving as the emcee. As usual, a number of sports and entertainment luminaries turned out. Dapper Nate Burleson, who had an excellent 11-year NFL career as a wide receiver for The Minnesota Vikings,
Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions, is now an air personality on the NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” where he discusses issues the happenings on the gridiron as well as news and entertainment topics. Burleson was on the red carpet discussing and defending 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick’s stance to kneel for the National Anthem. I pointed out to that Donald Trump began his comeback in the polls as the Kaepernick brouhaha was becoming a water cooler topic, and asked if that was a coincidence. Burleson conceded that Trump’s rise could be collateral damage, although former Jets running back Curtis Martin disagreed with that assessment. Mariano Rivera gave a sheepish smile when I brought up the fact that he would give the central New York State economy a boost in two years when he is certain to be a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee. He is enjoying retirement and following the career of his son, Mariano Rivera Jr., now a pitcher in the Washington Nationals farm system. One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Cheryl Miller, attended The Miami Project dinner as well. Miller coached in the WNBA and was upset to hear from me that the New York Liberty do not have a full functioning press room as writers have trouble even getting water before, during, and after games. Miler conceded that kind of nickel-and-dime attitude
treats WNBA players, many of whom competed in the recent Olympics where the Americans won gold, as second class athletes. “If you don’t take care of the media, they are not going to take care of you,” said Miller. CBS Sports Network has brought The PBA Bowling Tour back to prime time; coverage is Wednesday nights through November.

At almost three hours Oslo is at times dense and talky; it is only when negotiators begin to clash and engage each other that the play takes flight due to Rogers’s mastery at creating colorful, eccentric characters vividly inhabited by the excellent cast including the Israeli Labor Party’s Yossi Beilin (Adam Dannheisser), two economics professors from Haifa (Daniel Oreskes and Daniel Jenkins) sent to represent Israel; the Palestinian finance minister (Anthony Azizi) and Marxist PLO liaison (Dariush Kashani). Under Barlett Sher’s masterful direction, almost 15 characters clash
and finally find common ground in their / humanity forging the way to a first stab at peace in the Middle East.

A peace offering, a catharsis, or an exorcism of guilt is at the crux of Owen McCafferty’s drama, imported from Dublin’s Abbey Theatre by The Irish Rep and The Public Theater. Eugene O’Neil wrote: “The past is the present … it’s the future, too,” and in Quietly the deeds of the past have altered the present and the future for two men, their families, and their community. It is 2009 and Ian (Declan Conlon) and the shortfused, anguished Jimmy (the terrific, intense Patrick O’Kane) meet for the first time in a Belfast pub bartendered by a Polish immigrant (Robert Zawadski) who is watching the World Cup on TV. The men are 52 now, but in 1974 during the bloody troubles in Northern Ireland, which pitted Catholic IRA against the Protestant unionists, when Ian and Jimmy were both 16 – as other men in the very same pub watched the World Cup game – Ian committed an act of violence that turned life upside down for him, but irrevocably shattered Jimmy’s life. Their encounter is riveting, even moving, and under Jimmy Fay’s taut direction, the 75-minute drama ratchets up the tension as we wait for the explosive Jimmy to combust or forgive as new violence is brewing just outside the pub’s door. – Jane Klain

The movie was directed by Toronto's Dilip Mehta, and there's been some late controversy: dnaindia.com reported that the Indian Canadian Leone doesn't want the film released in India, as she is quoted that she believes the film does not do justice to her story, and insists the new film is a documentary and not a biography. Mostly Sunny is scheduled to be released around the globe in December … Big news for book Colleen fans: Best-selling Coble author and novelist Colleen Coble has released the third book in her mega-popular Sunset Cove series, Sunset At Blue Barrens, on HarperCollins. With more than four million books in print, Coble's works have won several book awards. Alan M. Stein, a practicing attorney dealing in land use matters in Long Island since 1971 – and a fervent jazz lover – is doing as much to bring smooth jazz to area audiences as anyone in the music scene. He’s a promoter of jazz events in the area – and has even become a songwriter, placing a new tune on an album featuring several of the greats of the game. “Living on Long Island before and after CD 101.9 (FM) lost its smooth jazz format and permanent venues disappeared, many of us were hoping for the return of its live music,” recalled Stein. “Several years ago, I took on the task to bring live smooth jazz, or whatever one wants to call it, back to the Island. With the help of my wife, Andrea, clients, and friends, we were first able to find our musical home at the beautiful, comfortable, and acoustically fantastic Madison Theater at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, where since 2013 we have promoted the best in live performances.” National and regional jazz, blues, and instrumental artists taking the Madison stage under Stein’s auspices have been Euge Groove, Candy Dulfer, Richard Elliot, Jonathan Butler, David Benoit, Jeff Lorber, Brian Culberson, Al DeGregoris, and many more. On October 15, The Rippingtons are the latest artists in the Molloy series, making The Madison a mecca for jazz lovers starved for shows. Stein’s friendship with DeGregoris, an award-winning composer and recording artist, has led to his latest achivement: A song on the revered artist’s new album. “On August 23, 2015, I sat down at my keyboard to write a song,” said Stein, taking a break from his law duties. “I know the date because of instead of physically writing the song on paper, I recorded it on my phone. Several weeks later during a conversation with my friend Al DeGregoris, I joked that after listening to thousands and thousands of songs after 65-plus years, I could write a song.” That spark of an idea led to “Mac’s Groove” (named after Stein’s grandson), written with Gregoris and fellow jazz great Nils. That song is now featured on DeGregoris’ new album, Time And A Half, and features Steve Cole on saxophone and Gordon Campbell along with DeGregoris and Nils. “Only time will tell if I have a future in songwriting,” said Stein. “My motto is like Nike – ‘Just Do It.’ At my age, it’s better to start at the top.” The new album is slated for a national mid-October release; it will be available at Amazon and all music outlets.

Fading Stars: As discussed here prevously, the conversation continues over the dearth of “stars” as we once knew them. Taylor Swift and Adele sell tremendous amounts of music by current or any other standards,
once knew them would have to be Lady Gaga; she is currently making a comeback with a snappy new single, "The Perfect Illusion," which sounds great blasting out of Z100 with the car windows open, and her new album will certainly be interesting. Gaga was the last performer to make an “everybody's talking” splash with her antics, her outfits, and most importantly, her string of massive hits, which is really what it's all about. As

and they fill up the seats in arenas and stadiums – but the fan response seems to be more tranquil than the mania that once powered Lady Gaga the music industry. The current Beatles documentary, Eight Days A Week (now playing, and in not nearly enough theaters) has already made $1 million at the box office, paid for by those lucky enough to find a place that’s screening the Ron Howard film. That is a testament to the staying power of real stardom, which seems to be something that we'll never see again. We see more young folks wearing Ramones shirts in the mall than anything similar for current chart-toppers (and consider: The Ramones never sold a lot of records, and never had a real radio hit). The last pop superstar as we
with superstars before her, she’s morphed into different phases, teaming with Tony Bennett for an album of show biz standards, then standing in for Julie Andrews at the Academy Awards for a flawless performance of tunes from The Sound Of Music. Finally, Gaga took a dramatic acting turn as the central figure on FX's "American Horror Story" series. Now, Gaga returns, in a more conventional mode with a full-length release, Joanne, scheduled to hit stores and online music portals on October 21. I have yet to see anyone else in recent times cover so many bases as successfully as Gaga – but I fear she may be the last of this type of sturdy breed, which would be a shame and a great loss for the next generation of pop fans. I hope I'm wrong, but technology has changed the template so much that I don't know if the concept of “stars” is Taylor Swift relevant any longer.

Area vocalist and songwriter Gina Cutillo of Port Jefferson Station – who has undergone a radical change in musical direction during the past couple of years – seems to have a hit on her hands with her newest single, “Keep On,” which is gaining traction with both radio and social media. Gregg Allman has been given a clean bill of health from his doctors, and has been given permission to get back to performing live. He chose the iconic Red Rocks in Colorado as the site for his return on September 25 for a performance at his own Laid Back Festival. "I just can't wait to get back out there," said Allman. "I've gotten so stir
crazy these last few weeks. I feel best when I'm traveling and playing. That's what keeps me going, and there's no better place to start than Red Rocks." Third Time’s The Charm
A young Iowa-based rock act, 35th & Taylor, has been turning heads nationally thanks in part to its fresh take on blues/rock. Lead singer Anna Taylor, who was seen on NBC's “The Voice,” fronts the quartet, with members all under the age of 20: Jack Osborn on bass, Evan Kaler on guitar, and Max Miller on drums. The group recently released its third album, I Know You're Trouble, on the HomeSlice Artists Management label. Taylor is excited about the new effort: “I want tons of people to hear it and I love it,” she said of the album. “I want to continue playing and make a living doing what I love. A New Savior:
Fresh Voice From LA
Portland-born, Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Savior has released a new single, “M.T.M.E,” which is now available on all digital platforms. Written by the 21-year-old singer and British rock frontman Alex Turner (who has worked with Arctic Monkeys and Last Shadow Puppets), “M.T.M.E” was co-produced by James Ford (famed for Haim and Florence + The Machine) and Turner, and serves as as the follow-up to her debut international hit “Shades” (released earlier around the globe on Columbia Records). Savior’s unique sound and style first caught the attention of several creative forces – including producer and music pro T. Bone Burnett, who placed her song, "Risk," in the most recent season of HBO’s cult series, “True Detective.” In addition, Savior co-wrote the most recent Last Shadow Puppets’ single, "Miracle Aligner," along with the erstwhile Arctic Monkey, Turner. After playing shows in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, Savior ia set to perform at London’s Courtyard Theatre on September 29, as well as at The Reeperbahn Festival in Germany.
