of Burton's usual underlying menace and carnage, and emerges a movie capable of entertaining everyone from teens to seniors without crossing the line into too-graphic violence (and it just does straddle that line – the title sounds like a young children's film, but it's a PG-13-rated fable that's best suited for older kids and up. Consider the film's villian, Mr. Barron (Jackson), a rancid vampirish sort who lusts to literally eat Miss Perrigine's children's eyes – good heavens!). Despite the somewhat intense scares, the
film is filled with Burton's deft comedic visual hand and just enough suspense to make it riveting. The supporting cast, including such familiar names as Jackson, Judi Dench, and Rupert Everett, is Minute Rice perfect. Indeed, Green's Miss Peregrine could become the next Potter, and this film’s success could make it the start of a longrunning series. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar children doesn't quite rank among this year's best films, but it clearly is among the most original.
Miss Peregrine’s School For Peculiar Children

It hit like a bolt out of the blue, but it was right on time to save one of the dullest movie seasons we can recall: In a month where such adult films as Sully were the only things worth checking out, early October gleefully brought Tim Burton's new fantasy epic, which shows the lightest touch the sometimes over-the-top director has ever employed – and the role as the title character will make a major star of Eva Green, best known for her roles in Casino Royale and Burton's ill-conceived adaptation of Dark Shadows. The stunning, steely-eyed Green forgoes her usual sex appeal and strikes a new tone in her role in this film adaptation of Ransom Riggs' best-selling young adult novel, as she deftly portrays the stern yet sensitive head of a school and dwelling for children with, shall we say, special powers: Twins with a difference, an invisible boy, a kid who can bring objects to life, you get the drift. Take Harry Potter, mix in The Wizard Of Oz, and add more than a dash

Today, Styx features founding members James “JY” Young, Chuck Panozzo, and Tommy Shaw, who joined the group in 1975. Rounding out the group is drummer Todd Sucherman, vocalist and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan, and bassist Ricky Phillips. The six musicians comprising Styx have been “Rocking The Paradise” together and with audiences far and wide, performing more than

Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones, from the progressive rock anthem that is “The Grand Illusion” to the all out rocker “Blue Collar Man,” and from the majestic spiritual love for “Lady” to a soul-deep quest to achieve the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball.” The current tour isn’t the only news Styx has been making in recent weeks: On September 2, Eagle Rock Entertainment released Styx: Live At The Orleans Arena Las Vegas via DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital formats. Filmed in high definition, it captures the band performing in July 2014, showering the crowd with a set list of hits and fan favorites: “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” “Renegade,” and more. Robert Plant, Joan Baez, and Ron Sexsmith are joining the Lampedusa: Concerts For Refugees tour in select cities around the country this month – including a show on October 18 (tonight) at Town Hall in New York City. Lampedusa: Concerts For Refugees will be headlined in North America by such legends as Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Buddy Miller, and The Milk Carton Kids. "When I heard that some of my friends were rallying to do a series of concerts to help raise funds and awareness, to help address the basic needs of food, shelter and medical care, I wanted to help," said Plant, who had a hugely successful career with Led Zeppelin before embarking on a Grammy-winning career as a
Amnesty International tour and more recently, standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London's Hyde Park. Raised in the Niagara Falls area, Ron Sexsmith started his first band as a teenager. Marrying young and becoming a father inspired him to write his own music. After moving to Toronto, he began releasing original songs on cassette. Sexsmith signed with Interscope and his Mitchell Froom-produced album debuted in 1995. Sexsmith's dream gig of headlining Toronto's Massey Hall was achieved in 2006, and he’s done so for every album release since then. He’ll return to that same famed Canadian stage during this tour. Seattle Seahawks two weeks ago (the game was never as close as the respectable final score Eric would indicate) seems to Decker a harbinger of things to come. Questions abound: Has QB Ryan Fitzpatrick’s holdout until the start of training camp had a negative effect on his performance? While he didn't throw six interceptions (as he did the preceding week against the Kansas City Chiefs), Fitzpatrick did not lead many long Jets drives, either. In fairness, he did not have receiver Eric Decker, who missed the contest with a shoulder injury. Fitz’s favorite target, Brandon Marshall, was shut down by one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks, Richard Sherman. Anonther problem is an old one: The team still can’t find a tight end who can catch the football.

BVL’s Good Works: Thanks to support from bowling centers and associations, Bowlers For Veterans Link (BVL) contributions for the most recent fiscal year rose almost $16,000 from 2015 to $924,567 for the season ending July 31. “We received contributions from more than 350 state and local associations and leagues last year and almost 40 different bowling center operators,” said BVL board of directors chair John LaSpina, who operates the Maple Family Centers. “We cannot thank these wonderful groups enough for their continued generosity — they are the backbone of our organization.” In addition to the donations, BVL received contributions from other bowling-related fundraising efforts, including the auction of a Kegel lane machine, resulting in a donation of almost $14,500. The Bowl America President Leslie Goldberg Charity Foundation gifted $10,000, and friends of International Bowlers Journal Senior Editor, Bob Johnson, and his new wife, Michelle, raised $5,000 in honor of Michelle's father, Vietnam Vet Fred Garcia, at their recent nuptials. “What’s most exciting for us is the passion our volunteers have for America’s military men and women,” continued LaSpina. “Moreover, we feel as though that spark is really catching on fire now … We have many bowling centers newly signed up to support BVL, and we believe our numbers will
The Jets' defense, supposedly a strong point, was porous against Seattle; QB Russell Wilson had plenty of time to find wide open receivers, as the pass rush was non-existent. Strong safety Calvin Pryor got burned by Seahawks’ wideouts all afternoon. I realize this be considered heresy: The flowery farewells to retiring Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully were a bit much. I’m not being disrespectful to Scully; it’s simply that most of us have not had a lot of opportunity to hear his work. I understand why anyone living in Southern California would be emotional over his farewell, and some fans here are old enough to fondly recall Scully’s days calling The Brooklyn Dodgers, but it has been a long time since he has worked nationally. I concur that his work on the memorable 1986 World Series was excellent. Even The NFL Network paid tribute to Scully by recalling that he did play-by-play of football games, a forgotten moment in his lengthy record. Mike Francesa reiterated that he will leave his afternoon drive time slot on WFAN, with his last show taking place on December 15, 2017. The odds are that it won’t be the last time that you’ll hear him on “The FAN,” as he did not say that he would give up his syndicated Sunday morning NFL show that runs from the NFL season through The Super Bowl. skyrocket for the ’16-’17 season. Major League Soccer is far behind the NFL in terms of popularity, but is moving up the charts and could soon displace the National Hockey League as the fourth league in sports. An indication of MLS’s rise is that it got to host an Advertising Week panel; New York City Football Club president Jon Patricof was proud that his team clinched a playoff spot, but admitted that it has been frustrating getting old school newspaper sports editors to pay attention to his team. An enjoyable panel was devoted to sports talk radio. WFAN’s Evan Roberts, who cohosts WFAN’s midday program with Joe Benigno, admitted his shows are more interesting when passionate fans call after their favorite team loses a game. Roberts disputed my notion that 'FAN executives try to appeal to a stereotypical blue collar guy sipping a beer at a tavern, although he conceded that few of his listeners are likely to be NPR listeners or subscribers to The New Yorker. Also on the sports talk radio panel was former TV sports anchor Len Berman, who said he has enjoyed his 20-month run hosting a general interest morning talk show on WOR
710 AM with partner Todd Schnitt: “Our ratings have tripled since we started, and we are now beating Imus!” It’s no secret that Berman and Don Imus didn't see eye to eye when they were both doing shows on WFAN; Imus can be heard mornings on WABC. The New York Yankees won only 84 games this year, which can't make Hal Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman, Lonn Trost, or Randy Levine happy – but it was still good enough to ensure that the team finished with a winning record. In case you are wondering, the last time the Yankees had a losing season was in 1992, when they finished with a 75-86 record. That’s impressive. Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, whose home run-hitting prowess was one of the few highlights of a rather humdrum season for the “Bronx Bombers,” is a candidate for the American League Rookie of the Year Award. His chief competition will be Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer, who came to Detroit from the Mets in the Yoenis Cespedes trade.

Sebastian's Back: Sebastian Maniscalco – who absoutely tore the roof off Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre at this year's Oddball Comedy Festival – is making history at The Paramount in Huntingon: He's been booked for his record 10th show during a sevennight run at the famous venue, beginning February 1. Tickets are at paramountny.com – but act quickly, because there's not a hotter standup star on the planet at this writing. New York Nuts: One of Sebastian the biggest comedy events Maniscalco of each autum is The New York Comedy Festival, presented by Comedy Central. This year’s event, as always, takes place in a host of the “Big Apple's” finest venues. Beginning November 1 and continuing through November 6, the Festival will take place in all five boroughs in areas large and small, featuring a dream lineup of both established and up-and-coming stars. Headliners at major venues will include Bill Maher (headlining on November 5 at The Theater At Madison Square Garden), an all-star lineup for the annual Stand Up For Heroes event in Louis C.K, Jon Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, Jim Gaffigan, and Jerry Seinfeld (November 1 at The Theater At Madison Square Garden); Patton Oswalt (November 3 at The Beacon Jamie Theatre), Trevor Noah (November 5 at LeeLo The Beacon Theatre), Tracy Morgan (November 5 at Carnegie Hall), Sasheer Zamata (November 6 at Union Hall in Brooklyn), and too many other shows and performances to list here. My, how you've grown: The New York Comedy Festival has expanded to all five bouroughs, and not just in major arenas: Added to the performance list this year are many of the top clubs and small halls in the area, including The Creek & The Cave in Long Island City, Caroline's On Broadway, Town Hall, NYU Skirball Center, The Village Underground, Littlefield, Gramercy Theatre, Upright Citizens Brigade East Village and Chelsea, The Bell House in Brooklyn, Gotham Comedy Club, and, many more venues. This Festival always does a stellar job bringing some of the best newer and “under the radar” acts that likely will become Sasheer future stars; look Zamata for performances by two of comedy's emerging stars, Tig Notaro and Bridget Everett, along with such budding mic masters as Joe DeRosa, Dave Hill, Eric Andre, Charlie Pickering, Anthony Atamanuik, Shane Mause, Liza Treyger, “Big” Jay Oakerson, Jamie LeeLo, and, again, more standup than you can shake a stick at. Tracy Morgan Information and tickets are at nycomedyfestival.com; act fast for many of these shows; Patton Oswalt, Tracy Morgan, Bill Maher, Stand Up For Heroes, and several other high profile performances have enjoyed brisk advance sales since the day the ducats went on sale. Compiled by Bob Smith, described by beautiful, well-heeled women as “that guy over there?”

As festival season comes to a close, we look to see what the fall season has in store. What new releases are coming up? What shows are coming to a location near me soon? What am I missing out on? These are all good questions that I am here to help answer. There are some exceptional acts coming to the NYC area in the near future. On Friday, October 21, there will be a slew of artists including Flosstradamus, Vanic, Audien, and Hook n Sling. The With Richard Joseph Branciforte downside is that they are all playing at different venues on the same night; some in Manhattan and some in Brooklyn. Nevertheless, you’ve got your lot to choose from. And if none of those peak your interest (unsure how that would even be possible), What So Not and DJ Sliink are gonna be tearing it up at Terminal 5 the next night. For the next weekend, you’re gonna Flosstradamus wanna clear your plans for Friday, October 28 as Above and Beyond will be taking over Pier 94 for RPM’s annual installment of Pier of Fear. Having been to the pier many times, I can vouch for the ambiance that comes with the venue. The setting essentially feels like a giant airplane hangar filled with music, fun people, insane lighting rigs, and good vibes. To anyone that hasn’t been there, it’s a must go to venue and, in this case, a must go to artist. Now, it’s been a while since I’ve written and I apologize about that. However, on the bright side of that, I’ve been listening to a lot of new music and have even more to share with you than I usually do. I may have mentioned the name Griz before, but I would be doing you all a disservice if I weren’t to mention him again. This man is a gem that has broken into the dance music community and is here to stay. He produces a mix of electro and funk mixed with some soul and jazzy stuff. So what’s so special? In addition to the production of the music, he also plays live saxophone during his performances and is usually accompanied by a guitarist as well. Putting those together, you get an incredible auditory experience, blending the sounds of the 1960s with the modern day era of electronic music and seeing live instrumentation while they’re at it. “Groovy” and “funky” are truly the only ways to

describe the music Griz and it blends two very distinct genres almost seamlessly. He’s been around the scene for around for years at this point, and has produced numerous albums, usually featuring everything from guest rappers, full bands, and solo musicians. His most recent album, “Good Will Prevail,” dropped not even a month ago and truly shows his talent and ability. The album contains everything from deep house drops, to grimey breakdowns, to soulful and thought-provoking chord progressions and lyrics that make you really think about your current situation with nothing but positivity. His ability to find and sample old school jazz, funk, and R&B is what really gives his music the authentic feel. It showcases his musical prowess as well as shows the listener that Griz is someone who puts in the time to make each of his tracks truly come to life with the message he’s trying to send. You can download his new album for free on his website. He has also just started his album tour and will be coming to Terminal 5 in NYC on November 3 and 4! I wouldn’t be talking about an artist in this manner if I didn’t truly believe in their music and what they do. So please, please make an effort to go out and see this magical experience. Fan girl episode over. Taking a look at some other artists, Eptic has just released his Overlord EP which has six mind-numbingly dirty tracks on it. One thing that stood out to me was the variety in the genres of the tracks. Without straying from his unique sound, Eptic combines a little taste of all realms of bass music to give the listener a full experience while listening to his EP. Everything from rock n’ roll sounding guitar breaks to tracks that just simply go all out. Make sure you take a listen and it truly will blow your mind. That’s it for me guys. PERFORMANCE
Burton Cummings
B.B. King Blues Club New York City
Filling NYC's top traditional music club to the rafters, Burton Cummings, the former lead singer of The Guess Who, made a simple proclamation at the start of his performance: “No light show, no dancers, thank God – just two hours of music I'd bet most of you have heard before.” With that, the 68-year-old Cummings (recently inducted into The Canadian Music Hall Of Fame as a solo artist) and his crack five-piece backup band tore into most of his hits and rocked Times Square royally: “No Time,” “American Woman,” “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,” an incredible version of “Undun,” “Laughing,” and just about everything else a classic rocker would want to hear. Throwing in classic covers such as “Baby Come Back” and “Not Fade Away” for lilt and surprises, Cummings remains a charming, tireless performer and as unpretentious a rock legend as you'll ever see in concert – and one whose vocals and piano skills are astoundingly intact after decades of performing.

Nico Padden
Motown Musts: It's no secret that I am an obsessed fan of the stars and sounds of Motown – especially 1960s and 1970s Motown. While Motown continued on through the decades, as the ’80s featured Lionel Richie,
Her ‘Light In The Dark’ Shines Bright
Who: She's quirky, entertaining, original, and unpretentious, and things are about to break for her in a big way: Singer/songwriter Nico Padden's new album, A Light In The Dark, will be released online (at BandCamp, iTunes, CDBaby, Spotify, and her website, nicopadden.com) on October 24. CDs of the new album will be available for purchase at what the affable and charismatic young artist termed as her “album release extravaganza” on Saturday, December 3 at 8 pm Sip This in Valley Stream. There's no cover; a suggested $5 donation is seeked. The Artist & Her Sound: Her website states: “Small girl. Big voice.” That's just the beginning of describing this young yet seasoned artist. From Padden's official bio: “Nico Padden’s powerhouse, sometimes quirky, and even sometimes vulnerable folk-rock songs on her fortcoming sophomore album are borne of her own self-destruction, missed second/third chances in life, surrender, and rallying the strength to rise above her inner and outer demons. When she sings, Nico sounds like a determined, perseverant She-Warrior carving a place for herself in a world where she doesn’t meet any neat, predetermined mold. Her rich, catchy, heartfelt songs and fiery, soulful voice are crowd pleasers everywhere she performs. A multi-instrumentalist, Nico shifts effortlessly between accompanying herself on guitar, ukulele, and the piano. Whether she’s accompanied by her full band or playing solo, every Nico Padden show is a thrilling folk-rock adventure – she’ll make your feet tap, your hands clap, your mouth sing, and your heart burst. “Born and raised in a musician family (her parents play in an Irish folk band) on Long Island, Nico has built up a supportive local following. She’s about to embark on an east tour in support of her forthcoming full-length LP. Powerfully raw yet hopeful, the sophomore effort follows her 2013 debut acoustic EP,
Waterbird (find it on iTunes &CDBaby.) Nico has performed everywhere from concert halls to farmer's markets, living rooms to dive bars, backyards to street corners, coffeehouses to fancy restaurants, andeverywhere in between. She’s a regular street performer in her current home of Queens, and has won over many crowds of strangers with her impish grin; frank, entertaining banter; and cathartic sound. Her music and voice have been compared to the likes of Alanis Morisette, Brandi Carlile, and Carole King.” To Learn More About & Contact The Artist: Log on to nicopadden.com, or find her at Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, SoundCloud, and YouTube.

DeBarge, and Rick James, and the ’90s into the 2000s brought one of the biggest recording acts of all time, Boyz II Men, to me, the magic was the 1960s. While there have been many books detailing the label's saga, a new release, Motown: The Sound Of Young America by Adam White with Barney Ales, is the ultimate (my poor wallet gets a continuous workout from all this activity). Ales was Berry Gordy's right-hand man – the sales guy – and he has many untold stories and precious, previously unseen photos that have finally made their way into our hands in this heavy (in more ways than one) hardbound tome published by Thames & Hudson. If you know someone who is deep into early Motown, or if you are, this book should be at the top of your must-get or must-give holiday list – I just can't stop
poring through its 400 oversize pages. Everything Old Is New – Again: In related Motown news, the Motown Expanded Editions album series is preparing to unleash a new special edition of Supremes A Go Go, which was originally released in 1966 and featured the hits "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart" and "You Can't Hurry Love." The album was the first on the Motown Records label to hit #1 on Billboard's Top Albums Chart, a major breakthrough for the label – and, to my knowledge, the first and only female vocal group album of the rock era to hit that top spot on the albums chart. Here are more facts that aren’t as widely known as they should be: The Supremes were the biggest U.S. group of the 1960s, second only to The Beatles worldwide, and The Supremes are the only U.S.

group in recording history to ever score 12 #1 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. It's highly unlikely that this particular record will ever be challenged. Supremes A Go Go features takes on hits of the period such as "These Boots Are Made For Walking," "Hang On, Sloopy," and cover versions of existing hits by fellow Motown artists such as "I Can't Help Myself," "Get Ready," and "Money (That's What I Want)." It was a great party album in 1966, and this expanded edition will certainly keep that party going – so "Get Ready" for A Go Go.

Janelle Kroll
Brooklyn-based alt pop singer/songwriter Janelle Kroll has released her debut EP, Outsider, via NYC indie label Lokal Legend, available now. The five-song collection features the lead single "FVR," produced by Grammy award-winning songwriter/producer Brian Kierulf, "24 Hrs," co-written and co-produced by Penguin Prison and Andy Seltzer, and "Looose" featuring morgxn. Even before an official release of her own, Kroll built an impressive resume, lending her vocal talents to several dance tracks such as Dennis Ferrer's "Mind Ur Step," Autograf's "Metaphysical," and Moon Boots' "Utopia"; in 2014, she went on tour with Big Data as lead vocalist. With the February 2015 release of "Sunny Days," Kroll formally introduced her soulful pop, bright harmonies and nocturnal R&B sound to the world, which continue on this new release. Kelsea’s Coup:
Young Star Makes Country History
With her third #1 hit “Peter Pan,” Kelsea Ballerini is now the only female artist in country music history to go #1 with her first three consecutive singles from a debut album. Topping both the Country Aircheck and Billboard Country Airplay charts, “Peter Pan” earns double #1's on Billboard by also landing atop the Hot Country Songs chart. Following Florida Georgia Line’s impressive 18-week reign at #1 with “H.O.L.Y.,” Ballerini is the first woman to reach #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts simultaneously. Ballerini will return to the area on December 2 to headline Irving Plaza.
Amy Lee:
All In The Family
Amy Lee of Evanescence is always full of surprises, and recently released a family oriented album, Dream Too Much, via Amazon Music. The 12-song album is available for Prime members to stream at no additional cost. In addition, it’s available for download purchase at Amazon.com. Dream Too Much is a collection of 12 songs that encourage children and families to sing along together. Inspired by Lee’s son and her own musical upbringing, the album features guest appearances by several family members, including backing vocals by her siblings, and instrumentals by both her father and uncle. “This album is very personal to me. My husband and I had our first baby in 2014 and he has been the center of the inspiration for this children's album,” said Lee. “Every song on this album has a story – whether it's an original for our son based on his favorite things or a song my dad used to sing to me when I was a little girl.”
